TALENT EXPOSED PHOTOGRAPHIC AWARDS

The annual TONI&GUY Photographic Awards are a celebration of the creative talent within the TONI&GUY family, and inspire the entire company with powerful and creative imagery. Stylists, technicians, makeup artists, students, academy teams and salon teams compete to win best of categories and the coveted Hairdresser of the Year and TIGI Colorist of the Year titles. Participants in the Photographic Awards gain valuable experience through seeking inspiration, creating solid concepts and executing their vision in order to submit their very best work. With the 17th Annual Photographic Awards quickly approaching, we have brought together a panel of experts to give you the inside scoop on what makes a stellar submission.

“A STRONG SKILL SET IN THE FUNDAMENTALS IS WHAT ALLOWS YOU TO HAVE ULTIMATE CREATIVITY AND TO TAKE BIG IDEAS AND MAKE THEM WORK.” - ZAK MASCOLO

INSPIRATION – “I begin by finding inspiration in fashion magazines, on Web sites, in street fashion and on the runway. Then narrow down what my focus is and create an inspiration board. This visual representation is key and helps the entire team keep a clear vision on the finished look.” –Samantha Finley, National Technical Director PLANNING – Alex Barron-Hough, a photographer with Bed Head Studio and the photographer of the TONI&GUY Freedom Collection and the new TONI&GUY Collection coming to you this fall, had this to say about planning your perfect shot – “Everything starts with precise planning and having a clear goal on the looks that need to be achieved (prior to shooting). Mood boarding, pulling tear sheets and getting in touch with what is current is essential. The more planning, the better the shot.” (See image 4)

VARIETY – “In submissions we look for variety. Are there different techniques being applied? Does the collection show us a depth of skill? These are the questions we ask ourselves when judging.” –Zak Mascolo, Creative Director (See image collection 2) MODEL SELECTION – “Casting is crucial. Hair type, personality, facial symmetry and original characteristics all need to be considered when selecting your model. Having the right models can make or break your work and shoot. I always look for natural raw beauty so that whatever look you create is enhanced by the model.” –Joseph Marzioli, Advanced Academy Director CREATIVITY WITH CLASSIC SKILLS – “It is important that your submissions show a strong foundation in classic techniques. A strong skill set in the fundamentals is what allows you to have ultimate creativity and to take big ideas and make them work.” – Zak Mascolo, Creative Director (See image 1) BALANCE – “Strength and softness - these two words help when creating a technique that makes a statement, but is still beautiful.” – Samantha Finley, National Technique Director (See image 3) MENTORS – “Have a great mentor to learn from. Anthony Mascolo has been this incredible figure in my career and he has taught me everything I know. Anthony’s motto ‘know the rules to break the rules’ is now something I live by as well.” – Alex BarronHough, Bed Head Studio photographer Photographic Award submissions will be accepted online starting the end of July. Be sure to prepare your submission now and stay tuned for details on submitting your work. Good luck!
