CULTURE CROSSING by Holly Elliott,

TONI&GUY Director of Marketing

As layered as a music mash-up, Culture Crossing is a mosaic of musical influences. Artistic Team members, Whitney Blischke and Lindsay Baker, collaborated on this issue of STRUT and used different musical artists’ styles to inspire their looks. Jazzed by the tight-textured hairstyles of the Kris Kross rapper group of the ‘90s and the retro volume of the pompadours of Elvis Presley and Bruno Mars, multiple eras combined to form their final looks. Clothing boldly supported the hair with heavy patterns and saturated colour delivered in fluid ethnic wrap-dresses. Makeup followed suit with unexpected dark liner in the crease and bright lips that managed a neutral quality. The final result takes the old to create the new. The shoot provided an exciting opportunity with East Coast meeting West Coast in Whitney Blischke’s (NYC) and Lindsay Baker’s (SoCal) collaboration. We took this unique opportunity to get an inside look into their creative process and picked up expert advice from the whole team from storyboarding to post production. With the 18th Annual TONI&GUY Photographic Awards quickly approaching, their insight is sure to prove helpful as you start planning your entries! Mark your calendars for the Photographic Award Submission Deadline, July 22, 2013. Entry details coming soon! ABOUT TONI&GUY PHOTOGRAPHIC AWARDS: This annual competition spotlights the talent within TONI&GUY as team members compete for best-of-categories and the coveted Hairdresser of the Year and TIGI Colorist of the Year titles. Participants gain valuable experience through seeking inspiration, creating solid concepts and executing their vision in order to submit their very best work.

STORYBOARDING “TAKE TIME TO PUT TOGETHER A STORYBOARD WITH ALL YOUR INSPIRATIONS. THIS WILL COMMUNICATE YOUR VISION TO THE WHOLE TEAM FROM FELLOW STYLISTS TO THE PHOTOGRAPHER. IT’S THE BEST STARTING POINT FOR COLLABORATION.” LINDSAY BAKER

TONI&GUY REGIONAL EDUCATION DIRECTOR AND ARTISTIC TEAM MEMBER

STORYBOARD

HAIR “BUILD UPON YOUR LOOKS TO GET A VARIETY OF SHOTS. TAKE TIME TO SHOOT EACH VARIATION. YOU MAY BE SURPRISED AT HOW THE HAIR EVOLVES. WHAT YOU ANTICIPATED BEING THE STRONGEST FORM MAY CHANGE WHEN YOU SEE THE FINAL SHOTS.” WHITNEY BLISCHKE TONI&GUY EDITORIAL DIRECTOR AND ARTISTIC TEAM MEMBER

MAKEUP “USE AS LITTLE FOUNDATION AS NECESSARY AND NEVER USE ONE THAT HAS SPF OR SHIMMER IN IT. THESE INGREDIENTS WILL REFLECT LIGHT AND THE MODEL WILL LOOK LIKE SHE IS WEARING A MASK.” LAUREN FERNALD

TONI&GUY SENIOR ART TEAM MEMBER

WARDROBE “MAKE SURE YOU BRING A STEAMER AND HAVE YOUR MODELS WEAR NUDE UNDERGARMENTS. ALSO, WHEN IT COMES TO ACCESSORIES... REGARDLESS OF THE THEME OF THE SHOOT... ALWAYS HAVE PLENTY OF BASICS ON HAND FOR SHOES, BELTS, AND JEWELRY.” CAROLINE MASCOLO TONI&GUY FASHION DIRECTOR

SHOOT ENVIRONMENT “IT IS IMPORTANT TO MAKE THE MODEL FEEL AS COMFORTABLE AS POSSIBLE. TELL HER HOW GREAT SHE LOOKS AND MAKE SURE SHE FEELS AS GOOD AS A SALON CLIENT. IF THE MODEL FEELS CONFIDENT, IT WILL SHOW IN THE FINAL SHOTS.” DAVID EVANS

PHOTOGRAPHER AND TONI&GUY NATIONAL EDUCATION DIRECTOR

POST PRODUCTION “IT IS IMPORTANT TO MAINTAIN THE INTEGRITY OF THE WORK AND THE UNIQUE FEATURES OF THE MODEL. I MAKE SURE THAT ANY EDITS ENHANCE THE PHOTO, BUT DON’T CHANGE IT.”

Bruno notes from

As hairdressers, our artistic ability is within us and we use hair as our medium of expression. Like a paintbrush or chisel, we use our scissors to shape our forms and our artwork also makes the world a more beautiful place. This is a gift and a challenge because as stylists we need to stay constantly renewed in a high-paced and challenging workplace. It is important to be deliberate when it comes to inspiration and to be thoughtful about our environment. Art is life and life is art. The two can’t be separated and new ideas are an accumulation of things around us. A modern building could inspire a geometric cut; a song a new sense of movement or an edgy change. Your clients look to you as an artistic leader that will make them look and feel their best. Be sure to take time to renew yourself so that you can fully enjoy your work and bring your best to your art. A note about the Photographic Awards: We designed this annual contest to be an inspiring process. Use it as an opportunity to do something that doesn’t have to be salon viable. Your work need not be over-the-top...just something that is beautiful to you. I look forward to seeing your creativity in the entries this year!
