Redefining the Real Estate Landscape
T
he Realty Shop President and owner Amanda Alejandro started the firm in 2018 with her partner and Vue Enterprises CEO Jay Steinbackwith a focus on the success of company, agent and client alike, ensuring a culture of support and success for all. As an award-winning agent with more than 15 years experience, Alejandro was frustrated by the holes left by traditional, big-box brokerage models and had a vision for a different kind of company—one where a customer-first focus is backed by local expertise and where technology and innovation are leveraged to maximize agent success and client satisfaction. “I designed The Realty Shop against the grain—against the fractures of the flat fee company model as well as the traditional brokerage,” she says. “Real estate has one of the highest fail-out rates of any industry because many brokerages don’t have a culture of success. I really wanted to create an environment for people like me to thrive. I took everything that I didn’t want or like that happened to me and did the exact opposite when creating the company.”
“
AMANDA ALEJANDRO AND JAY STEINBACK
This unique approach has helped grow The Realty Shop from a small firm to ranking among the top brokerages in the St. Louis market and the state of Missouri in just a few short years. The Realty Shop prides itself on being a one-stop shop for not only real estate clients, but also for its team of agents, providing them with all the resources, training and mentorship needed to make their career a success. It starts at the top with the leadership team—all of whom have a minimum of 10,000 hours experience in their area of expertise. “Ninety-three percent of our sales are generated by the leadership team here, which is practically unheard of,” Alejandro says. “This allows our agents to do what they do best:
As a leadership team, we ensure only the best sources are implemented, resulting in higher agent and company success.
”
be out meeting customers and selling homes instead of worrying about what is happening on the back end. As a leadership team, we ensure only the best sources are implemented, resulting in higher agent and company success.” The investment in each staff member promotes incredible client relationships and outstanding achievements. With a robust mentorship program focused on one-on-one agent learning, The Realty Shop creates an atmosphere of continued knowledge and growth. Agents are trained in all aspects of the real estate transition including both the buy and sale processes to ensure their knowledge and expertise meet client needs and demand—all leading to a five-star client experience with trusted real estate experts. “We provide each agent the tools to take their real estate career to the next level—allowing them to truly show their love for this amazing career field,” Alejandro says.

COVER STORY
SERVICE DRIVEN ASSISTANCE LEAGUE OF ST. LOUIS
by stephanie wallace SINCE ITS INCEPTION IN 1997, the Assistance League of St. Louis has been dedicated to serving the needs of our community through unique philanthropic programs. The nonprofit is operated entirely by volunteers and is one of the largest of 120 chapters that comprise the national Assistance League organization. Its mission is possible thanks to the dedication of almost 500 local members, who logged more than 56,000 hours last fiscal year. “We want to do more for the community,” Yolanda Perez-Cunningham, chapter president, says. “We have an amazing membership that never stops thinking of new ways to better serve vulnerable populations in St. Louis.” The Assistance League’s list of services is extensive, from providing toiletries and other necessities to women in domestic abuse shelters to fitting students with new athletic shoes. When COVID-19 hit last spring, the nonprofit knew its programs would be more important than ever. To ensure the safety of both its members and the population it serves, the organization had to get creative. “With families under so much pressure, we knew there would be a greater need, and there still is today,” Perez-Cunningham says. “In 2020, our outreach program received more than three times the number of requests for beds and other basic necessities. We knew we had to figure out how to continue offering all we usually do.” One example of how the nonprofit pivoted is its school uniform program, Operation School Bell. Each year, the initiative provides clothing like pants, shirts, socks, underwear and fleeces to students in need. In normal circumstances, the Assistance League brings students to its headquarters for fittings. Last year, the organization delivered forms to schools with instructions for how parents can measure their children and then the uniforms were delivered to them safely. Schools also received vouchers to give to families for new athletic shoes. “We’ll be following the same guidelines this year,” Perez-Cunningham notes. “We’ve already started receiving requests from schools, so we’ll begin filling those and continue throughout the year.” The nonprofit also grew its Books from Friends program, which provides age-appropriate books to students in pre-K through high school. Last year, the

initiative was able to provide kids with more than 15,000 books. Assistance League partnered with the Urban League of Metropolitan St. Louis at food drives and also held character parades at Head Start locations. “It’s so important to get books in the hands of children,” Perez-Cunningham says. The organization also worked with Barnes & Noble to create a special edition of Allie All Along to share with families. Written and illustrated by Sarah Lynne Reul, the book helps kids learn how to process and cope with strong emotions. To make its important services possible, the Assistance League operates an upscale resale shop in Creve Coeur called Fantastic Finds. One of the nonprofit’s other largest fundraisers is its annual Imagine! gala. This year’s event will be Nov. 6 at Doubletree by Hilton-Chesterfield and is themed Night of Inspiration. “We hope to inspire guests by sharing the wonderful things we are doing in the community,” Perez-Cunningham notes. “It will be great to be with everyone and enjoy the evening while helping support children and families in need. Doing something for others and showing local students that someone cares fills our hearts with so much joy.” &

st. louis
In our mention a few issues ago of a much-unloved billionaire—Jeff Bezos of Amazon—we are reminded that Bezos is no higher than No. 2 among heinous high earners. For anyone true to The Lou, the No. 1 spot has been occupied for years by billionaire Stan Kroenke, owner of the erstwhile St. Louis Rams, who pulled the rug out from under metro fans of NFL football, vamoosed with the team to L.A., leaving the Dome to languish, used only occasionally for monster-truck events. Speaking of languishing, a 2016 lawsuit for breach of contract, etc., etc., filed against Kroenke, the Rams, the NFL— heck; essentially anyone wearing horns— didn’t seem like it would amount to a mound of ram … um, a hill of beans. But the courts have been ruling consistently against Kroenke. If this keeps up, maybe the devil will get his due. I mean, he moved our home team for illicit profit. Selfish dweeb. Kroenke et al. filed in June for summary judgment, essentially requesting that the court toss out the suit. No dice. Change of venue? Nope. But can’t you keep the obscene amount he’s worth under wraps? Not a chance. All sports fans remember Kurt Warner and that Super Bowl victory in 2000. Sure, there were 15 losing seasons among the 21 that the usually hapless team played here. No matter. There’s nothing a St. Louisian can hold onto longer than a grudge, and I’m as peeved as the rest of you that some uber-rich dillweed thinks we’re too small a market for an NFL team! So, when the lawsuit that begins in January winds up, let’s all hope Kroenke (it really should rhyme with cranky) gets an outcome that includes his empty wallet handed back to him.

BARcelona Tapas, in my somewhat humble opinion, is one of Clayton’s most charming restaurants. It now finds itself smack-dab-bullseye in the footprint of a multi-use development slated for the southeast corner of the prime intersection where Central and Maryland avenues cross: Bemiston Place. Weep not, foodies. There’s still time to get in a great meal, maybe on the sidewalk patio; the lights won’t turn off for the last time until after close of business Saturday, Sept. 25. In a statement, Frank and Eloise Schmitz say they hope to reopen in a new location in the future; I’m of the mind that it should be sooner rather than later. For as long as they’re idled, we’ll miss them … BARcelona has been there forever, in restaurant years. We always felt like we’re dining with good friends. Frank is the consummate host and embodies the spirit of a genuine tapas eatery: in a word, sharing. Actually, it’s up to you and your dining companions. (“Here, mom—lemme take a few of those tender beef medallions off your plate.”)

Garry Kasparov’s eventual defeat at the fingertips and via the neurons of StL grandmaster Leinier Dominguez probably wasn’t the legendary former world champion’s most stunning loss in a tournament. Kasparov might say that would have to be his earth-shattering defeat by Deep Blue— an IBM supercomputer—in a six-game contest in 1997. Last week he came in fifth in a tournament featuring three days of over-the-board chess played by the world’s best in Chess960 (or Fischer Random chess). Deep Blue probably wouldn’t have been programmed to succeed at this sophisticated new twist on the ancient board game. Dominguez took a dramatic final-round game against a fellow St. Louisian, grandmaster Levon Aronian, taking home the $37,500 first prize. Winding up in a second-place tie were grandmasters Wesley So, Maxime Vachier-Lagrave and Sam Shankland, each of whom won 20 grand; Kasparov’s take was $12,500. Dominguez was no less than delighted at his performance throughout the event. “It’s been a while since I’ve won a tournament this strong, and I’m pleased that it happened here in St. Louis, of all places,” he said.

WHERE ELSE IN THE METRO IS THERE A FUN DINING ESTABLISHMENT CREATED IN LARGE PART WITH METAL SHIPPING CONTAINERS?
st. charles
Attention, rabid cycling enthusiasts! Instead of having to contend with urban and suburban motor-vehicle traffic, you’ll still be able to ride nearly the entire 237-mile stretch of our beloved Katy Trail even when Interstate 270 bridge work is being done way, way above your helmet-clad head somewhere out yonder near Columbia. Shipping containers will be lined up to create a makeshift tunnel along a stretch of the bicycle and pedestrian path, below an aging I-70 bridge crossing the Missouri River at Rocheport, to protect riders from falling construction debris. The sturdy metal containers also have been used to build unique if oft-amusing residences popping up everywhere, including a number in the metro, one of them a St. Charles dazzler that attracted some 2,000 guests to an open house. And they’re integral to the architecture that’s made Rockwell Beer Co. such an unusual and delightful stop along Vandeventer Avenue in the Forest Park Southeast neighborhood. The original I-70 bridge, built in 1960 and rated in ‘poor’ condition, will be replaced in two phases; the span in one direction is slated for opening to traffic in late spring 2023, the second span slated for a late-2024 completion. So remember, motorists—share the road with bicycles. Meanwhile, cyclists—please be aware of vehicles! Nobody owns the road, so y’all just be polite.
LAST ISSUE’S Q&A What is a cost-share grant from the Missouri Department of Conservation? Missouri Department of Conservation cost-share grants assist government entities and nonprofits with management, improvement and conservation of trees and forests on public land. The grants help communities boost tree inventories, remove or prune invasive and hazardous flora, and train volunteers and city/county employees to best care for community forests.
TOWN TALK
FIVE STORES TO EXPERIENCE...
union station This item could also have had St. Louis Public Library for a subhead. Both the iconic train station and the similarly fabulous Carnegie library building downtown are usually among the architectural wonders we take family, friends and other out-of-towners to see when they’re showing off the StL. And the station’s hotel lobby is where Michael Francis, 44, chose to meet with us. Both are favorite venues for the producer’s quest to find creators to vet, nurture, develop and package for TV, whatever the theme or whoever the end user might be. He does casting, too. Not so easy: “People have no clue what it takes to get on TV!” This is all an oversimplification, of course. He could be the creative energy behind a true-crime show. Or one on hoarders or about genealogy. He produced a show in which blues-rocker Melissa Etheridge ‘met’ her ancestors. His wife is a fan of the musician. “And that’s the only one she got interested in,” he adds, with a snicker. Anyhow, what’s with that lemur on his shoulders? He seems kind of chill. Lemurs always look startled, and we got the definite low-key vibe from the producer despite his project Saturday morning having gone to hell in a handbasket. Guess that’s the behind-the-scenes activity that clients at any level don’t need to see. Pleasing the folks who hire you equals delivering results. Positive outcomes, that is. You can see his influence, while not his fingerprints, on Bare Hands PEOPLE HAVE NO CLUE Rescue. It’s a new show on WHAT IT TAKES TO GET Animal Planet that is, natch, a reality show about the ON TV! bare-handed capture of critters that, for instance, would rather live in your house than roam around outside. Bats? Been there. Angry beavers? Well, they’re not always all that mad, just not willing. Michael ‘Bare Hands’ Beran of Louisiana is the star of the series, which premiered Aug. 22. Viewers follow the Wildlife Command Center team as Beran and crew (including his son, Chance) criss-cross the country and find themselves in wildly peculiar situations. Chance, under his father’s wing (so to speak), rescues a raccoon that’s become too comfortable in someone’s attic. Two other team members come face to forked tongue with a venomous snake. Tim, the crew daredevil, gets the call about a coyote in a house; another expert helps Beran sniff out a skunk in a scrap yard filled with hot tubs. And that’s just the pilot. This is the type of fellow and line of work you’d want to know more about. Voila … a series! His headquarters in St. Louis has become a rehab facility and occasionally a forever home for several rescues, including a Brazilian porcupine, a red kangaroo and a pair of lemurs, including the one on Francis’ shoulders. Francis is on the hunt for content and content creators throughout the Midwest, be they unusual people, people in unusually compelling lines of work, what have you. You’ve heard of Dirty Jobs, of course. “Think stuff you can’t do—or wouldn’t want to do,” Francis says, with a grin. Hit him up. Visit michaeldfrancispresents.com.

IT IS HARD FOR ME to write this column because the title implies I will honestly tell you what is on my mind. In reality, you come here to get a laugh or two—you really don’t want a heavy opinion piece. That’s why you read The Wall Street Journal or The New York Times. (If you only get your news from Facebook, stop it now! There is still a chance you can still save some brain cells.) This week, however, my brain broke. Yes, broke. I don’t know how else to explain the eight hour crying jag I had. First, I am not a crier. Sure, my eyes water at certain scenes in a movie or the occasional commercial, but I don’t cry much less sob. For those of you thinking oh, she is just a menopausal woman with hormones, I am so far past that stage that I don’t have any hormones left in my body. (Oh, and for anyone who attributes the tears of a woman to hormones, stand down. The monthly gyration of hormones in a woman’s body should become a new defense for murder: ‘I was just trying to sleep and he kept snoring.’) So, what prompted the full- blown
snot-filled water works? I have a list: the pandemic, hurricane, flooding, wild-fires, Texas, teachers in Florida dying from COVID-19, Afghanistan, hmm, oh and one of our senators from the great state of Missouri. Throw in a few personal issues and KABAM! I really was like one of those cartoon bombs; once detonated, bits of me were all over the place. No one or nothing could help. My husband tried. My friends tried. But then I just stopped crying, and it was over. The next day, I picked up two lifelong friends. We were going on an adventure, which meant we were driving past the intersection of Highway 44 and 270. I tried to explain what happened. It was hard to put into words so I just said ‘my brain broke.’ We ended up at Cliff Cave Park, which butts up to the Mississippi River. You could literally walk into the untamed Mississippi if you wanted to. For some reason, it was so peaceful being close to something that can cause so much damage. It reminded me that I have control over so few things in my life, which is why I think my brain broke. Contact Patty at phannum@townandstyle.com.

I came home and made some financial contributions to organizations that could help those in need and others that work for changing laws I object to. I wrote a few emails to organizations and elected officials. I tweeted a few pointed replies to elected officials I disagreed with. I talked to a few friends about how to have a bigger impact on other issues. I babysat my grandson who was sick and then took comfort in … Australian TV. I tell you it is better than any booze you can drink or medical marijuana you can smoke! Here are some shows to look for on your streaming services: The Heart Guy, Jack Irish, Five Bedrooms, Offspring or Rake. Watch one and tell me that everything doesn’t seem to get just a little bit better when every person has the most beautiful accent and says things like ‘bugger off.’ Seriously. Then, on Saturday, I got a call from a friend. Her brain broke on Friday. It is hard, but we will get through it. Peace my Peeps.

TOWN TALK
PARENT TRAP by dr. tim jordan A 10 IS A 10 IS A 10 KIDS NEED SAFE SPACES to express all their
feelings, especially while riding the roller coaster of emotions of the teenage years. The subject of loss came up at a recent retreat for middle school girls I was facilitating and so I guided them through a visualization where I had them imagine someone they had lost sitting by them in a meadow. I guided them through a conversation with this person, having them ask this person for advice on a current challenge they were facing. The girls then hugged them goodbye and thanked the person for being there for them. When I finished, there wasn’t a dry eye in the room. The girls then began to share about their losses. The first girl to speak lost her mom to cancer two years ago. One girl’s best friend had moved out of state. Another girl lost her bestie when she joined the popular group that didn’t include her. Another girl’s dad got remarried, had a new baby and now rarely sees her. One girl shared that she was adopted and wonders about her biological family. One girl was sobbing and haltingly shared that her puppy died recently when run over by a car. The
sentiment wasn’t the same as losing a mom or best friend, but a loss is a loss. The experience and details may differ, but the emotions don’t feel any less real. We described this principle as ‘a 10 is a 10 is a 10,’ meaning the feelings are similar despite perceptions that some experiences are more intense. Kids explain to me that a pet is always there for you. You can share stories and fears, and they listen without judgment. Pets become a safe haven for children, and this also holds true for their stuffed animals. That is why so many young adults take their stuffed animals and old baby blankets to college. Loveys don’t lose their value with age. They serve as reminders of how loved and deserving they are. This helps give perspective during down or lonely times. When kids come to you with their feelings, take them seriously, listen, mirror, get in their shoes to see it from their point of view, affirm their feelings and let them know it makes sense why they might see it that way. After they feel heard and understood, ask if they want feedback or help to see the situation in a different way. Encourage them to journal, draw or find another

way to express and make sense of their emotions. Be very careful to never belittle, minimize or accuse them of being overly dramatic or too sensitive. The girl at my retreat who had lost her mom shared that she now knows that she is not alone with her grief; others can relate. It’s such a gift for girls to have safe spaces where they can share their stories and hear others’ stories as well. My campers all felt a sense of relief. I encourage parents to share their stories about adversities they’ve faced along with feelings they’ve experienced. Doing so will show your children you really can relate. A 10 is a 10 is a 10; remember this principle so kids feel safe to share their deepest thoughts and feelings with you. That is how you will remain an influence in their lives throughout their teen years and beyond. & TIM JORDAN, M.D., IS A BEHAVIORAL PEDIATRICIAN WHO WORKS WITH GIRLS IN GRADE SCHOOL THROUGH COLLEGE. As important as hitting the books and learning in the classroom are, it’s equally critical that schools provide their students with the resources they need to stay active. We reached out to two local schools to learn about how they are making improvements to their athletic and recreational facilities. See how they’re helping their students get in the game.

This school year, students at Kirk Day School are enjoying a new outdoor space. The independent Christian elementary school installed a turf field in a location previously occupied by a parking lot. “We wanted to make sure our children had a green space to play,” head of school Taylor Clement says. “We have a playground with a fall surface, but we needed more so kids wouldn’t have to play soccer or football on blacktop. Before, they could be outside and active, but now, they can do it in a place that is safer and more conducive to their play.”

The turf field was installed over the summer. “The biggest surprise was how many layers of dirt and gravel go under the top one,” Clement notes. “To be able to drain and withstand the elements while being sustainable, the construction is deeper and more involved than you might expect.” KDS worked with Ideal Landscape and Kirkwood Fence to complete the project, and the school’s director of technology and special projects, Steven Lee, played a pivotal role in organizing it. The initiative also provided an unexpected opportunity for other improvements. “The retaining wall, landscaping and fencing all provided the chance to beautify the area,” he explains. “The project was more successful than we hoped for.” Since the start of school last month, Clement says the field has been in constant use between recess, P.E. classes and athletic practices. He’s also looking forward to being able to use the space for outdoor events in the future. “Winston Churchill once said to never waste a crisis, and our board made the most of needing more outdoor space,” he says. “Our students now have the perfect place to engage and play, and they know it’s made for them. We’re grateful to our generous community that wanted to see this project come to fruition. We’re blessed by the support.”

PRINCIPIA SCHOOL When Shawn Brown took the position of athletic director at Principia School in 2015, he found plans for a new gym that dated back to 1998. The need for an update to the school’s athletic facilities was clear, and now, that vision is becoming a reality with the construction of the Simon Athletic Complex, which is expected to be completed in late spring 2022. “The new gym will really allow the students to develop their skills while providing the resources they need,” Brown says. Along with increasing space for activities and locker room capacity, the new building will include a state-of-the-art weight room and fitness center. “At Principia, we’re big on character education, so there also will be a character lab,” he notes. “It’s a place where we can start the conversation about what character means on the field or court.” Along with the new gym facilities, the coeducational day and boarding school is improving its outdoor athletic resources as well. The school currently has five fields, and when the project is completed, there will be nine, including a new multipurpose water-turf field. “The technology behind all of the fields is state-of-the-art and makes them very playable,” Brown explains. “Materials-wise, there will be no difference between Principia’s baseball field and what the Cardinals play on at Busch Stadium.” Brown notes that organizing the school’s athletic programs has been difficult during construction of the new facilities, but the inconvenience will be well worth it. “I’m looking forward to having an inviting space that students and the community will be excited to visit and use,” he says. “It will be great to get to play a night football game under the new LED lights, and hopefully, we can host some great community events that inspire people to learn more about what a great school Principia is. Seeing this project come to fruition has been awesome.” &

WITH KATELYN & THE #CRUMBLYCREW
LAST YEAR, I TRIED MY HAND AT HOMESCHOOL. I definitely didn’t win teacher of the year, but I will always cherish the amount of quality time I got with my kids. Now that they are back at school, it seems like the evening is over in a blink. I realized I need to make more of an effort to connect with them at night in between sports, homework and running to the neighbors to play. Was it always this busy in life? My mom always tells me that it keeps getting busier! I feel like I am in a constant battle to slow things down.
Pre-register at jburroughs.org/openhouse. Presentation begins at 9:30 am.
I recently asked my mother-in-law what she thought had changed about raising children in the past 30 years. What are some of the valuable things that we don’t make time for anymore? Her first response: family dinner around the table. Immediately, my mind flashed to the countless nights my kids eat sitting at the counter while I scarf food down standing up. Then, I clean while they finish eating. I was usually so proud of myself for even making dinner that I never thought about prioritizing actually enjoying that meal with my family.
John Burroughs School
The next night, I announced to everyone we would be eating together at the table. It sounds a little daunting when you have little kids because you are constantly getting up to get stuff. I just decided to involve my big kids and had them set the table. Paper plates for the win!

Jazzy and fresh – Timeless and family friendly!
I could actually cry when I tell you how profound this little shift was. My big kids were so settled and happy sitting directly across the table from Kyle and I. Both of us asked about their days, and they took turns with stories. Even my super picky toddler sat in her highchair and ate more than I had seen her eat in months. We all decided this was a new priority in our house, and the research backs up our feelings. Studies show there are amazing benefits from kids and teens eating as a family. For young kids, it gives them a sense of structure and belonging. They feel much safer. For more than 70% of teens, catching up and spending quality time over a meal is their favorite part. I wonder if they ever admit this to their parents. According to CASA, nightly family dinners resulted in kids twice as likely to get A’s in school. It also helps with healthy food choices, portion control and fighting against obesity. Most importantly to me, studies involving more than 5,000 kids show family dinners lead to more happiness and strong mental health. I think we can all agree that anything that supports our kids’ mental health and joy after the past couple years is worth investing in. The special bonding that happens at dinner really gives you that moment, the moment we moms search for each day with our kids where we truly connect with them. They feel our love, and we feel theirs. It’s the moment that helps us sleep at night. Even if we did a million things wrong that day, we got that moment right, and that is what our kids will remember. Maybe you have been reaping the benefits of family mealtime for a long time. Maybe you started out right and like me, got a little lazy in your execution. If you make one simple shift this year in improving life at home, maybe it should be this one. I know I am so grateful we are working towards more family mealtime in our house.

A PERFECT FIT THE GATESWORTH

COVER STORY
by julia m. johnson ONE OF THE THINGS RESIDENT GLORIA PASLEY LOVES MOST about The Gatesworth is how easy it is for her to live there and keep working full time. The St. Louis native teaches music in the Ferguson-Florissant School District and says the beautiful senior living community serves as a relaxing oasis at the end of each day. “Staff members understand that I am still working, and they respect that,” she says. “They do everything they can to make things easy for me.” She says their supportive attitude helps her home life run as smoothly as possible. “Our executive director, Carrie Montrey, and her staff are very knowledgeable and work as a cohesive team,” she says. “They are always on the same page when it comes to serving residents. If there is something you need that they don’t currently have, they will find a way to get it for you.” Pasley says she selected The Gatesworth for a number of reasons, not least of which was the ability to make her own choices and customize her residential experience. “When I was looking for a place to live, I thought back to when my mother was ill,” she notes. “She had a lot of people weighing in on her care, but I realized I would rather make those decisions for myself when the time came. The Gatesworth fits my needs perfectly in that regard. I have some chronic health issues, so it made sense to pick a community where I can stay even when my care needs change.” She says that while the pandemic put a hold on many of the usual group activities and entertainments, there are still plenty of opportunities for social stimulation. “The Gatesworth offers a variety of cultural outings, like visiting St. Louis landmarks and restaurants and enjoying holiday lights,” she says. “Art experiences, musical performances, films, exercise classes and other programs keep you as busy as you want to be. If there is an activity you want to do, you are encouraged to do it, and if not, there’s no pressure.” She says just walking around the beautiful grounds is rejuvenating in itself, and the dining choices are wonderful, but she also loves to stay in and cook for herself. “Comfort food is my specialty,” she notes.
The Perfect Fit “At The Gatesworth, every day is mine for the taking. Everything—from food to programs and events—has been catered to my individual, unique tastes. It’s the perfect fit for me, and my little pal Lexi, of course!” — Jerry Davis, Resident of The Gatesworth

RESIDENT GLORIA PASLEY WITH DINING STAFF MEMBER ROCHELLE LITTLE
Pasley says Gatesworth staff members understand how important individuality is to residents, who are free to express and enrich themselves in whatever ways they wish. “There is no such thing as a one-size-fits-all living experience at The Gatesworth,” she says. “I would tell any prospective resident, don’t expect to be fit into a mold when you come here. You are welcome to be yourself, whether that means socializing with others or relaxing at home.” She adds that the community offers camaraderie that is hard to find elsewhere. “I could have moved to an apartment complex, but STAN DO UT SE NI OR S I knew I wouldn’t make as many personal connections there,” she says. “Living in a regular apartment often means you become kind of an island. But at The Gatesworth, you’re an important part of a community, and there are always caring people nearby to help.” & SPEC IAL SECT ION

BEHAVIORAL HEALTH SUPPORT
Mercy has developed a new initiative to improve upon its Nurse on Call program. In the existing program, registered nurses guide and advise patients with medical concerns outside of regular business hours. The new initiative, Mercy on Call, adds physicians and advanced practice providers to expand capacity and offer more advanced remote care. Calls made to Mercy primary care offices after hours and on weekends for adult patients are automatically sent to Mercy on Call. For pediatric patients, Nurse on Call will still handle after-hours requests, but Mercy plans to add full-time physicians and advanced practice providers to that service, as well.
Saint Louis University has received a four-year, $1.8 million grant from the Health Resources and Services Administration. The funds will be used to establish the Integrated Behavioral Health Practice Fellowship for Children and Youth and train professionals to work with children and adolescents with complex behavioral health needs—a group that is at increased risk for adverse outcomes like homeslessness, violence, incarceration, suicide and more. In Missouri, 36% of this population lives in an area with a mental health professional shortage. In addition to the creation of the fellowship to increase the overall capacity of the behavioral health workforce, the grant will provide multiple professional development and continuing education opportunities for professionals in the region.
BREAKING DOWN THE DATA Heart rhythm disorders like arrhythmia are caused by dysregulation in the function of ion channels, a complex set of proteins that coordinate proper heartbeats. To better understand how changes in the channel can destabilize heart rhythm, researchers at the McKelvey School of Engineering at Washington University studied hundreds of millions of Markov models, which show probabilities of different states. Ion channels can be open or closed, and they can go through different states as its action potential changes across the cell membrane. Starting with 111 million models, the team ended up with 100,000 after eliminating duplicates or those that would be less useful for the study.

STROKE RECOVERY In the U.S., almost 800,000 people have a stroke each year, and that leads to more than $46 billion in health care and related costs. Thanks to a five-year, $3.12 million grant from the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke at the National Institutes of Health, a research team at Washington University is working to investigate how the brain restructures following a stroke to develop new therapeutic targets that may improve recovery. After a stroke, the brain has to rewire its neural and vascular networks around the damaged area, and the team plans to use two imaging modalities to better understand the key components of the process.

This award recognizes the volunteer efforts of a couple who together has, in the late Jane Freund Harris’ words,
SUPPORTING HEALTHY FAMILIES BY ST E P H A N I E WA L L AC E
Offer expires October 31, 2021.
For a decade, Glennon Card has offered St. Louisians a way to support local businesses while also providing compassionate medical care for children in our community. Every fall, proceeds from the program go toward a different initiative benefiting young patients at SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital. Since 2011, Glennon Card has raised more than $1.87 million to support surgical advances, diagnostic technology and important resources like the hospital’s milk lab. This year, proceeds will go toward programs like Danis Pediatric Center, which provides outpatient pediatric care to children regardless of their families’ ability to pay. Danis Pediatric Center serves newborns and those who are 18 years old or younger at both its locations—Cardinal Glennon and its midtown clinic. Along with checkups and physicals, SLUCare Physician Group pediatricians provide diagnostic services and second opinions for complex cases. That’s just one of the benefits of the center’s association with Cardinal Glennon, according to Dr. Heidi Sallee, a SLUCare physician and the center’s medical director. “Along with our faculty, there are currently 56 residents training to be primary care physicians who spend time in our clinic,” she notes. Around 75% of Danis Pediatric patients live below the poverty line, and Danis Pediatric Center is dedicated to providing more than just health care. The center also works to help entire families thrive by connecting them with important resources. During well child checkups, families are given a questionnaire to determine the challenges they are facing. The questions cover topics like food insecurity, parental depression, housing concerns and more. “People don’t often think to tell their pediatricians if they’re having difficulty paying utilities or meeting other needs,” Sallee says. “When we started asking those questions, we were surprised to learn that 7% of our families needed help accessing food.” Danis Pediatric Center works with organizations like St. Louis Area Diaper Bank and Operation Food Search to supply families with necessary resources, and its Danis CARES program offers more support, including help coordinating transportation and providing access to social workers and family navigators. “It’s an outstanding program that touches so many of our families,” Sallee says. “At the end of the day, it’s impactful to know that we are supporting the growth and development of our patients beyond purely medical needs. As pediatricians, we feel like we are making a difference.” The clinic was originally designed to provide services to 5,000 patients annually, but now its two locations handle more than 20,000 visits each year. Fundraisers like Glennon Card help make further growth possible, so more families can access important care and resources. “I was a graduating resident at Cardinal Glennon in 1998, and Danis Pediatric Center is bigger than ever,” Sallee says. “We appreciate the support of the community, and we are excited for what the future holds because of it.” & A GLENNON CARD AT GLENNONCARD.ORG FOR 10 DAYS ▶ OFPURCHASE MAJOR SAVINGS AT LOCAL RETAILERS AND EATERIES OCT. 15-24. ◀

Fall Forecast:
Color by stephanie wallace
From warm harvest hues to the kaleidoscope colors offered by autumn leaves, fall is a season with a distinct color palette. However, your wardrobe doesn’t need to be limited to browns, oranges and reds. This season, embrace unique shades and don’t be afraid to color outside the lines.
go go indigo This deep blue is a great starting off point for experimenting with color this fall. It’s not too bold, but it’s a distinct departure from the traditional hues of the season. You can lean more toward the purple end of the spectrum for a statement look, or stay closer to a classic navy for a more neutral approach. Sundays No. 39 - Indigo, $18, BLUSH BOUTIQUE

i’m blushing Magenta wasn’t the only pink hue Pantone predicted would be big this fall. Delicate and romantic shades also made the list. Like their bolder cousin, blush and rosé can offer a playful pop—just a softer one. It’s a great option for brightening up more traditional pieces. Ichi Elly Shirt, $76.50, CIVIL ALCHEMY

Pastels for fall? Sounds crazy, I know. But it’s a perfect example of how 2021 is offering a notable shift when it comes to style. Embrace change and incorporate lighter purple shades into your seasonal wardrobe. Opt for a subtle pop with a handbag or accessory, or fully commit with outerwear or head-to-toe styling. PRESENTED BY
Residential & Commercial Heating & Cooling Specialists Since 1969
OFF the cuff w/claiborne craig berube
As a professional hockey player, Craig Berube played for teams like the Philadelphia Flyers, Toronto Maple Leafs, Calgar y Flames and Washington Capitals. For St . Louisians, however, his career highlights come with his time coaching for the Blues. As interim coach in 2019, he led our beloved team to a Stanley Cup title— the second interim coach in NHL histor y to do so. BEST ADVICE YOU E VER RECEIVED A S A PL AYER AND A COACH? You have got to play to your strengths and accept who you are. I learned that in my first year playing pro. Coming out of junior hockey, I scored 30 goals my last year, so I thought I could play. John Paddock , my coach in the minors, grabbed me and said, “Look , this is what you’re going to need to do to have a career in the NHL . If you don’ t , you’re probably not going to play ver y long.” THIS WA S A BIG OFF-SE A SON FOR YOU; YOU GOT MARRIED. That came later in the off-season, so I still had a couple of months of single life. We had a great wedding. My wife and I have been together for seven years, and I’m ver y for tunate to have her. YOU AL SO PL AYED GOLF WITH JACK NICKL AUS, TOM WATSON AND OZ ZIE SMITH RECENTLY. I was ner vous the day before the event , but those guys were unbelievable. They really made things easy for me and helped me relax . I was a huge Cardinals fan in the ’80s, so I watched Oz zie growing up. It was a thrill to meet him. What a nice guy. DO YOU HAVE AN E YE FOR FA SHION OR IS SOMEONE EL SE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE CRAIG BERUBE ENSEMBLE? My wife is a fashion designer, so she is ver y knowledgeable in that area and makes sure I’m dialed in. I buy a lot of my clothes here in town from Bespoke. David Corbitt has taken good care of me. WHAT OLD TREND ARE YOU HAPPY HA SN’ T MADE A COMEBACK ? The mullet . I had one in the ’80s and thought it looked prett y cool. Now, when I see those pictures, I wonder what I was thinking. HOCKE Y PL AYERS CAN BE VERY SUPERSTITIOUS. WHAT ABOUT COACHES? They can be, for sure. I don’ t call it superstitious. For me, it ’s routine. OTHER THAN WINNING, WHAT DO YOU STILL GE T A KICK OUT OF IN HOCKE Y ? The camaraderie. When I was done playing, I knew I wanted to coach. I didn’ t want to leave this locker room. I would miss it , and when I’m not doing it in the summer time, I still miss it because I love being involved in a team.
TOM WATSON, CRAIG BERUBE, HALE IRWIN, RONALD KRUSZEWSKI, OZZIE SMITH AND JACK NICKLAUS AT THE ASCENSION CHARITY CLASSIC
BE ACH OR MOUNTAINS? Beach more now, but mountains for sure when I was young. L iving up in Canada, I was about three hours from the mountains, and I used to ski. L iving in Philly, I’m only an hour and a half from the Jersey Shore, so I’ ve become more of a beach person. OTHER THAN COACHING THE BLUES, WHAT AT TRACTED YOU TO ST. LOUIS? More than any thing, the people. I love the people in this town. St . Louis also may be the best spor ts town in the U.S. The people in this town make this town.
GET $50-$1,650 IN CARRIER COOL CASH REBATES + 0% FINANCING ON QUALIFYING CARRIER HVAC PRODUCTS! Rebates end 11/19/2021
WHAT DO YOU WANT TO TELL BLUES FANS ABOUT THE UPCOMING SE A SON? I’m excited. We’ ve added Pavel Buchnevich and Brandon Saad. Saad is a proven winner ; and Buchnevich is an up-and-coming player who played really well in New York for the Rangers.

LEARN & GROW ST. JOSEPH’S ACADEMY
by stephanie wallace HIGH SCHOOL IS A TIME OF LEARNING and personal growth in a young person’s life, and St. Joseph’s Academy (SJA) in Frontenac is dedicated to providing students a balanced high school experience—both in and out of the classroom. The all-girl Catholic high school was founded in 1840 by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet. SJA recently launched a computer science and engineering program that offers four unique courses, including robotics. The curriculum takes advantage of the new Weidert Center for Integrated Science, which was part of a $7.5 million campus renovation and enhancement project that was completed last year. Along with new science facilities, the school has created the Sisters of St. Joseph Humanities Hall, which includes a new student success center and updated visual arts studios. “We’re looking forward to having our girls back on campus in the full community spirit of not I but we,” says Jennifer Sudekum, principal of academic affairs. “Our newly renovated spaces and all of the courses we offer allow students to explore their gifts and talents.” The school’s curriculum is rigorous by design, offering 49 advanced placement and honors classes. SJA also is dedicated to ensuring each student receives a balanced education. “Each class is designed to enhance another,” Sudekum explains. “Developing the whole person is important as we send off these young women to make a profound impact in the world.” With the major renovations completed last year, the school has plans to update its library next year. “We’re always looking ahead and making sure we are providing the best environment for our girls,” she says. “We’re also mindful of looking for new ways to develop new courses.” Extracurricular activities play an equally important role in SJA’s approach to education. Each student is required to be involved in one activity, but many choose to be involved in more, according to Karen Davis, principal of student affairs. “We have more than 35 clubs, and if girls don’t find something that piques their interest, they can submit a proposal to create their own,” she notes. “We try to address mind, body and spirit. We’re focused on campus ministry programs, and our athletic teams have won 59 state championships.” The school’s Future Business Leaders of America club operates the Cup of Joe coffee shop, which donates its profits to charity.
SJA IS DEDICATED TO PROVIDING YOUNG WOMEN A BALANCED EDUCATION.
This year, the school also is partnering with On the FLY Productions to offer instruction in the more acrobatic elements of performing arts. “It’s a great opportunity to explore something new and build upon interests like theater, dance and our choral program,” Davis says. The collaboration is just one facet of SJA’s fine arts offerings. The school is putting on The Brothers Grimm Spectaculathon this fall, and the spring musical will be Beauty and the Beast. “Our students put a lot of work into everything and are very talented,” she notes. All of SJA’s extracurricular and academic offerings work together to build a comprehensive experience, and all activities play a major role in strengthening the school’s sense of community, according to Davis. “Balance is one of the core values the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet founded the school with, so it’s been part of our mission since the beginning,” Sudekum adds. “Our community is vital to who we are, so we are grateful to be back together on campus. This year already is off to a great start, and we’re looking forward to continuing.” &

HOOKED – – BOOKS by patty hannum
Fumbled by Harry R. Brady This book is really two mystery novellas loosely connected by the detectives solving the cases. The first case focuses on an NFL player with memory loss accused of murder. The second is set in Pittsburgh and involves a sex trafficking ring. Both topics are timely, and Brady’s description of the abandoned steel mills of Pittsburgh brought the second story to life.
Freedom by Sebastian Junger Junger, best known for his book The Perfect Storm, spent nine months following railroad lines from Washington D.C. to Connellsville, Pennsylvania, with three to four people at a time. He weaves his observations about the geography of their surroundings with his thoughts on freedom and key historical events. This book takes you through the backyards of our country. I liked it so much, I read it twice.

The Husbands by Chandler Baker This is a Good Morning America Book Club pick, and for the life of me, I can’t figure out why. I typically try to steer clear of buzzed-about books, but I read this one and wish I hadn’t. It is The Stepford Wives in reverse. I guess I just gave away the entire premise, but trust me when I say you will figure it out in the first 30 pages. Save yourself the time and pick something else.
Agatha Arch is Afraid of Everything by Kristin Bair I missed this book when it was first published, but I am glad I found it once it came out in paperback. Agatha is a mess. She is a nervous wreck—actually, I think she has OCD. Slowly, Agatha digs herself out of the hole. This book will definitely make you laugh, but you will also cheer for dear, crazy Agatha. I think everyone has a little bit of Agatha in them.

hen new patients come to Premier Prosthetics and Orthotics, they experience the highest level of convenience and care from certified prosthetists who are passionate about making a direct impact on their quality of life. William McNab first met Greg Doerr, one of the original owners and co-founders of Premier Prosthetics, in April 2021 just prior to having his left leg amputated below the knee. The extremely active 62-year-old participates in numerous sports and activities such as pickleball, hiking, biking, swimming and fishing. He had undergone more than 40 orthopedic surgeries in his lifetime. “I’m never easy on my body,” he says. After his last surgery, an ankle replacement, McNab ended up with a severe infection in the bone. His only options were to have his lower leg amputated or have all of the hardware removed, leaving him with a non-functional left leg. Not one to be slowed down in life, McNab opted for the amputation, and his surgeon recommended working with Doerr and the team at Premier Prosthetics. McNab set up an appointment to review his prosthetic choices ahead of the surgery. “I talked to Greg and saw that he had photos on his walls of quite a few athletes who he’d worked with,” McNab says. “I told him what I expected, and I’m not an easy patient to work with. I only know how to live life one way,

and that’s hard as heck. He knew I would put his prosthetic to the test. I didn’t plan on changing my life at all, so I wanted the most responsive type of prosthetic, even if it was difficult to learn to operate.” McNab had no problem learning to use his new leg and happily walked out of the Premier Prosthetics office the day he received it. In addition to his sports and leisure activities, the prosthetic allows him to do everything he needs to in his daily life at home with his wife of 40 years and their two dogs, which he enjoys taking on walks. “My quality of life is much higher now with the prosthetic than anything I was going to be left with after the last surgery,” he says. “People looked at me like I was crazy, like it was an abrupt decision, but ultimately it turned out to be the best thing I could have done. FOCUS ON:
Cholesterol B Y
SEP TEM BER
What is cholesterol? It is a waxy substance found in your cells, used to make hormones and digest fats. Your body makes the cholesterol it needs, but also acquires it from certain foods, like egg yolks or fatty meats. High cholesterol can cause plaque buildup in your arteries, leading to an increased risk of heart disease and stroke.
What does “good” and “bad” cholesterol mean? There are two types of lipoproteins responsible for carrying cholesterol to and from cells: low-density (LDL) and high-density (HDL). • LDL: It makes up most of the cholesterol in your body. LDL is considered “bad” because it contributes to fatty buildup in arteries. • HDL: It carries cholesterol away from the arteries to the liver, where it is broken down and flushed from the body. “Good” cholesterol doesn’t completely remove LDL, only one-third to one-fourth of total blood cholesterol.
CHOLESTEROL
LIVER
S T E P H A N I E
W A L L A C E
is National Cholesterol Education month. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, almost 93 million U.S. adults have high cholesterol, so it’s a subject there’s no better time to learn about.
When should you start checking your cholesterol levels? High cholesterol has no signs or symptoms, so the only way to know if it’s an issue for you is through screening. The CDC recommends adults at low risk for heart disease have their cholesterol tested every five years, and those at higher risk should consult their doctor about how often they should be screened. Risk factors for high cholesterol include family history, diabetes and age. Men tend to have higher bad and lower good cholesterol, and for post-menopausal women, LDL cholesterol increases.
Can your cholesterol be too low? In rare cases, a very low level of LDL or total cholesterol has been associated with health problems, but doctors still are studying the link between low cholesterol and health risks. It has not been determined if low cholesterol levels cause health issues or vice versa. Very low levels may be associated with increased risk of cancer, hemorrhagic stroke, depression and anxiety, as well as preterm birth for pregnant women.
Which foods affect your cholesterol? Saturated fats like red meat and full-fat dairy raise your total cholesterol, and limiting your intake of these foods can reduce your bad cholesterol. The same is true of trans fats, which often appears on food labels as “partially hydrogenated vegetable oil.” The Food and Drug Administration banned the use of trans fats in 2018, but food produced before that date was allowed to be distributed as recently as this January.
THERE ALSO ARE SEVERAL FOODS YOU CAN INCORPORATE INTO YOUR DIET TO IMPROVE YOUR HEART HEALTH AND CHOLESTEROL. • Foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids like salmon, mackerel, walnuts and flaxseeds • Oatmeal, kidney beans, Brussels sprouts, apples, pears and other foods with soluble fiber, which can reduce absorption of cholesterol into your bloodstream • Low-fat dairy products because whey protein has been shown to lower LDL and total cholesterol as well as blood pressure.
Other than diet, how can you improve your cholesterol level? There are several lifestyle changes that can help improve your cholesterol level. • Exercise: Moderate physical activity can help raise good cholesterol. Exercise for 30 minutes five times a week or, if you work out more vigorously, 20 minutes three times a week. • Quitting Smoking: Improves your HDL cholesterol, and within a year of quitting, your risk of heart disease is cut in half. • Moderate Alcohol Intake: While the benefits aren’t significant enough to recommend alcohol to nondrinkers, moderate alcohol consumption has been linked to higher levels of good cholesterol. That means up to one drink a day for women of all ages and men older than 65, and up to two drinks a day for men 65 and younger. However, too much alcohol can lead to serious health problems, including high blood pressure, heart failure and stroke. • Weight Loss: Extra pounds can contribute to high cholesterol. Tracking calories and watching fat intake, along with incorporating more activity into your daily routine, are beneficial ways to lower cholesterol while also helping with weight loss.

UNDERSTA DING S PPLEMENTS
Thank you!
BY JULIA M. JOHNSON DIETARY SUPPLEMENTS are a popular way to augment your food intake for a variety of health goals, but some may be more effective than others. Before trying any supplement, you should discuss it with your doctor, search for reputable studies and find out how it fits into a healthy diet of whole, natural foods. It’s also a good idea to look for labeling that shows a product has been tested by a third party like ConsumerLab.com, UL or U.S. Pharmacopeia. Here are some supplements that have been studied in recent years:
turmeric We normally think of turmeric as a spice that flavors and colors dishes like curry, but it also contains curcumin, which has long been used to fight pain caused by inflammation. Researchers are still debating the effectiveness of turmeric supplements, however.
magnesium This mineral is found naturally in the human body and supports immunity, normal regulation of blood sugar and muscle and nerve function. Some people take it as a supplement to improve sleep and counter problems like restless legs syndrome. Studies are not conclusive on its actual impact, but some experts say taking a low dose for better sleep may be helpful.
folate/folic acid The B vitamin is important for women before and during pregnancy, as it helps to prevent birth abnormalities known as neural tube defects that can affect a baby’s brain and spine. If you are thinking of becoming pregnant, ask your doctor about prenatal vitamins that contain the proper dose of folate, usually 400 to 500 mg.
HEALTH & BEAUTY
omega-3 fatty acids Some studies have shown that taking omega-3 supplements may have a beneficial effect on brain health, attention and memory. Omega-3s are important for energy and cell structure, and they support a healthy immune system, heart, blood vessels and lungs.
probiotics These ‘good’ bacteria can be found in fermented foods like sauerkraut, miso, yogurt and kombucha. They may help improve digestion, reduce skin irritation, lower cholesterol and provide immune benefits, but the jury is still out on whether taking them in supplement form is as beneficial as ingesting them in food.
joint supplements Glucosamine and chondroitin supplements are very popular in the U.S., with some users reporting they provide relief from arthritis pain. Research isn’t conclusive on their effects, but there likely is no harm in trying them if you suffer from arthritis, some experts say.

Ron Brown was inspired to pursue country living after noticing farm listings while reading the Sunday paper. He convinced his late wife, Susan, to visit properties, and they eventually fell in love with this 90 acre farm 20 miles outside of Washington, Missouri. There were no salvageable structures on the property, so the Browns took the opportunity to design their own unique country retreat. “It’s always fun to share such a special place; there’s nowhere like it in the area,” he says. “Susan’s creativity was unimaginable, and she was the driving force behind creating this place. Everything beautiful about the house and property came from her.”
What are some of your other favorite features? In all the homes we’d previously owned, we never had a large master closet. Since we were building this one from scratch, that was something I wanted. We’ve had guests comment that our closet is larger than their master bedroom. The house’s doors also are special. Susan and I found some of them in Arizona; they’re older and have a lot of character. We also built an addition around 2009, and there’s a mother-in-law suite with How is the home unique? The kitchen and den are actually made from a 19th direct access from the garage, which is great for guests. century barn. We were advertising for a standing barn we could relocate, and one of the responses was What are some highlights of the outdoor space? It’s perfect if you like horse riding. There’s a barn a gorgeous stone one. When we saw it, we knew it was too special to just be used as a barn. Susan and where you can keep up to eight horses. You can ride in our contractor worked together to make it work and the back pastures of the property or explore the whole designed the home around it. We wanted there to be area. Along with the heated pool, we also put in a from indoors, and the pulley system that was used to four-acre lake. We built a bridge over it, and there’s a small beach area and a dock you can fish from. raise hay bales is still there. Why did you decide on this property? We were thrilled with the views. The property sits on a ridge that’s the second highest point in Franklin County. Looking out at the hills in the Ozarks just wowed us. It reminds you of being in the mountains in Colorado. I immediately appreciated the beauty and sense of peace. It’s a magical place.

MODERN FRENCH COUNTRY DESIGN
Old-world charm, but make it chic. Natural wood beams, textural accents (often with an air of antiquity) and sleek, clean lines make up the beloved modern French country style. Not to be confused with the arguably over-done “modern farmhouse” style, modern French country offers an elevated take on the rustic warmth that has been taking Pinterest and Instagram by storm! We break down this increasingly popular look, plus tips on how to decorate your own home with this timeless style.

What is modern French country design? Modern French country blends luxe style with a hint of rustic imperfection from traditional French country design. Clean lines and shapes offer the pulled-back elegance that modern sensibilities have to offer. Think stone and patina finishes, inviting imperfections, tons of character and curves galore. The style as a whole plays with vintage elements while still feeling clean, intentional and warm. When done well, a modern French country home should feel both brand new and comfortingly familiar at the same time. Modern French Country vs. Modern Farmhouse While we strongly believe that the best design style for your home should be whatever makes you happy, we’re here to tell you that modern French country is the answer if you’re looking for an elevated alternative to the infamous modern farmhouse look. Let’s start with the similarities: Both modern farmhouse and modern French country have a rustic element to them, thus making them comparable design styles. That said, modern French country balances the rustic style with warmth and layered textiles that make the space feel inviting and homey. Modern farmhouse can often feel “colder” as it leans more toward cool neutrals and high-contrast pieces. For this reason, we like to think of modern French country as a softer take on the modern farmhouse style. How to decorate with modern French country style: When thinking about bringing the modern French country style into your own home, it’s important to remember that it’s the combination of pieces that are going to give you the warm and cozy yet modern look that you want to achieve. That said, there are three elements that every modern French country home will have: • Warm, texture-rich home accents • Sleek lighting with the perfect patina • Layers of textiles with pillows and throws

T&S HOME
BY STEPHANIE WALL ACE • PHOTOS BY SUZY GORMAN
In 2000, the current homeowner of this Ladue property purchased it from her mother, moving back into the home she grew up in with her husband and children. The decision was not only based on childhood nostalgia, but also a desire to reconnect with an important piece of family history. The land the home sits on has been in her family for almost 90 years. The parcel, which is now divided into four homes, was originally purchased by her maternal great-grandfather for his daughter, and her own daughters are the fourth generation to live on the land.

Why did you choose to return to your childhood home? My husband and I were looking to move to a larger house at the same time my mother wanted to downsize. We always loved this house. We purchased it, and my mother actually bought our charming farmhouse in Creve Coeur. There’s such wonderful history to this house and the land itself. My grandmother's house is across the street from us, and our home is on the land where my mother and her brother used to play baseball when they were young. Can you tell me about the changes you made before moving in? My father always wanted the house to look as if it had been added onto over time, so we wanted to keep that architectural style by using different materials. We put in a three-story addition that allowed us to create a new master suite—that way my husband and I weren’t living in my parents’ bedroom or my childhood room. There were a couple other additions, bumping out some of the spaces, and the kitchen and bathrooms were remodeled. Did your personal history impact how you approached renovations? Because of the family history, we definitely wanted to keep some elements intact. Growing up, the kitchen and hearth room were always the heart of the home for me and my siblings and parents. We wanted it to still very much be the focus of our family living, but to make it our own, we gutted it and made the space larger. What are your favorite features of the property? It would be hard to pick a favorite room or area because our family really does enjoy every space, inside and out. Friends and guests all enjoy my dad’s old paneled study. We call it the George N. room in his honor, and it’s actually a space we only made very minor cosmetic changes to when we moved in. Everyone loves that room. Tell me about the outdoor spaces. It’s kind of funny. Before we moved in, we made all of these plans with our architect and realized that a circular patio would no longer exist because we were pushing out the house in that direction. Our architect mentioned that it happens a lot because people forget about the outside when renovating. We met up with a landscape architect to create a new terrace. Now, we spend a lot of time outside, especially down by the pool. How do you approach interior design? We definitely made it our own. I wouldn’t say I have a particular style. It’s really a true mix of old and new with a strong undercurrent of sentiment. Each piece of furniture, art or other decorative piece is tied to a special place, cherished memory, loved one or a combination of those things. There’s a lot of heart and soul in the house and the decorating. Any items with fun stories? In the hearth room, there’s a table that was here when I was growing up. It’s where I used to play speed quarters with my friends, and it’s still sitting in the same place. There also are benches in the garden that our family designed on a trip to Italy. In the George N. room, we have a cowbell that has a fun story. Our family took a vacation to the Swiss countryside, and there were fields of cows as far as the eye could see. I tried to cajole our daughters into approaching a farmer to see if we could purchase a bell from them. For all the cows we saw, there was not a farmer to be found. Fast forward five years, the girls give us a bell that they had engraved. Where did they get it? Amazon. Finally, there’s a portrait that’s currently sitting in our dining room. A few years ago, my sister-in-law brought it while house-sitting for us. It’s of my husband’s grandfather, and we haven’t found a permanent place for it, but we love having him around. We have even incorporated him into birthday parties by sitting him among the balloons and presents. He’s very accommodating as he moves from chair to post to pillar.

DESIGNER SPOTLIGHT

t This week, it's all abou desgin! a resurgence in classic
by stephanie wallace
LAURIE LEBOEUF OF CASTLE DESIGN What are you excited about in design right now? We are seeing a lot of style that almost feels like a blend of veranda, southern living and traditional home. I am really happy to see this upward trend in traditional design. Our vendors are showing us beautiful new textile collections with pretty floral patterns, Chinoiserie wallcovering and artwork, scalloped edges in drapery and furniture, natural woven textiles, and beautiful trim collections. How do you like to incorporate the style into design? Interior design is about understanding how people live and creating a beautiful space that complements that lifestyle. I love mixing traditional elements with more transitional or modern pieces. I find it incredibly important to pay attention to the architectural features of a space. The resurgence in more traditional patterns really plays well with much of the architecture in St. Louis and is a welcome change from previous trends. I have been implementing more painted cabinetry in kitchens, laundry rooms and home offices with colors that warm up spaces, and I also use traditional gold accents, particularly unlacquered brass hardware for interior doors and cabinet hardware. Lighting is another wildly important aspect to the design. It can truly make a statement, and I love all of the warm gold tones we’re seeing. Soft greens have made a comeback. We are seeing a lot of beautiful shades in the textile industry, as well as in furniture finishes and cabinetry color selections. Other timeless classic elements include lacquered walls and painted furniture and hand-painted wallcovering. Are there other styles or trends that complement this one? Classic blue and white decor seems to never go out of style. We are seeing more and more collections come out with the color palette. These patterns are timeless, and that’s what I love so much about grandmillennial design. While the trend may come and go, the design elements can truly stand the test of time. Do you have suggestions for ways to experiment with the style? Many clients have a home that they already love, but they want to update it periodically. If you have a strong architectural foundation, you can make small tweaks without having to do a major renovation. Sometimes, a few key updates can re-energize a room you’ve grown tired of. Taking existing pieces of furniture and refinishing or repurposing them in other rooms of your home and updating your soft goods (drapery, pillows, linens) or artwork and accessories are all great ways to transform a space. Are there any trends that are on the way out? While modern farmhouse has its place, the look has been widely overdone in spaces where it isn’t organic. Shiplap wall treatments, barn doors and other hallmarks of the style are beautiful, but they can look out of place in certain suburban and urban homes. Open floor plans are not quite as desirable as they once were. While most clients still want an open layout and great flow from room-to-room, it is important to maintain some architectural interest so these spaces don’t just become one big cavernous room. Cased openings and slightly more defined rooms with wider transitions are great ways to keep your line of sight open while creating sections that have character.

I’m continuously learning about something I’m passionate about. The housing market is fast-paced and constantly changing, so you can’t afford to get complacent. Market trends, changing marketing methods and new technologies all provide new situations to gain experience from.
When you hand over the keys to your new buyers, it is one of the most rewarding parts of my role as a luxury realtor. This is the home where my clients are going to create their new life full of memories. I am so grateful to be part of that!
FUN FACT: I have six grandkids!
FUN FACT: Organizing and rearranging my house, whether it be a drawer or an entire room, helps me recharge.
