Spray a non-stick saucepan with low-calorie cooking spray and put it over a medium heat. Add the onion, celery and garlic and stir-fry for 2-3 minutes.

Add the stock, carrots, potatoes, beans and the bouquet garni, bring to the boil and season lightly.

Reduce the heat to medium and cook for 10-12 minutes.

Remove the bouquet garni and serve hot, sprinkled with chives.

MTU to host International GAA college Championships next week!

MTU is delighted to announce that the University will be hosting the Electric Ireland Higher Education GAA Championships on our Kerry campus from the 13th to the 17th of February 2024.

This is set to be a fantastic showcase of Gaelic games activity with over 17 games taking place across the 5 days, with teams descending on Tralee from all over Ireland, the UK and the US. The Kingdom has long prided itself on its famed Gaelic games heritage, and this week-long festival of hurling and football action, a first for MTU to host both the Sigerson and Fitzgibbon cup finals, is a source of

great pride for all in the University and we hope to provide a fantastic occasion for all.

We would like to acknowledge the support we are receiving from Kerry GAA and the various clubs around Tralee town, Tralee chamber of commerce and all who are helping to make this event a memorable one for those who will visit us.

Best of luck to all competing teams.

Council Commences Planning Process For New Amenities In Fenit Kerry County Council has commenced the planning process for a propose centre for water-based activities in Fenit.

The proposed facility, adjacent to the greenway trailhead and the beach at Fenit, will provide appropriate facilities for water sports participants and cyclists. The quality of the visitor experience will be improved and remove the need for individuals and families to ‘get changed at the boot of their car’ and improve the visitor experience. The centre will provide hot showers, changing and toilet facilities, secure storage, induction spaces, equipment wash-down facilities and orientation points.

Kerry County Council secured funding of €1.2m from Fáilte Ireland to develop this facility in

under the Platforms for Growth 2019-2025: Platform 2 – Facility Centres for Water Sports Activities.

The Platform for Growth is a scheme developed by Fáilte Ireland to support the development of shared facilities at waterways in the Republic of Ireland through the provision of funding.

The facility will be fully wheelchair accessible and include a ‘Changing Place’ compliant facility and will be built using sustainability best practices such as solar heating panels to meet Nearly Zero Energy Building Standards. Additional cycling related infrastructure will be provided within the building and the surrounding public realm and car park to adjust the facility to service the trailhead. The design incorporates the public realm

around the facility and the link to the greenway creating a serviced trailhead for that amenity.

The Part VIII planning process has commenced and submissions from members of the public are invited via the Kerry County Council online consultations portal. Submissions

MTU awarded €14.6m funding for research MTU has been awarded €14.6m under the TU RISE programme (Technological Universities Research and Innovation Supporting Enterprise). TU RISE is designed to improve research functions within the technological university sector and enhance institutions’ engagements with their surrounding regions.

Today’s announcement will support MTU’s strategic ambitions in research and innovation by helping to scale up the university’s research activities across all campuses. This will benefit MTU students, staff and the southwest region for years to come with the planned establishment of an MTU-wide Research and Innovation Office, an MTU Graduate Research School, support for PhD studentships, and a strengthening of links with industry and communities.

President of MTU, Professor Maggie Cusack, commented: “This is a very significant investment in MTU’s future and a major boost for the southwest region. This funding will have a hugely positive impact on research and innovation across MTU and is another milestone in transforming our six campuses into one university. By enhancing our research and innovation capabilities we are a step closer to reaching our strategic goal of being a truly great technological university with global reach.”

This funding announcement follows the announcement in December of €7.5m for MTU under TSAF (Technological Sector Advancement Fund). TSAF funding will focus on providing an optimum learning experience for students as they progress through their MTU education journey and multiple initiatives to help staff enjoy workplace well-being and success.

We are launching a major fundraising drive to help finance an extensive refurbishment of the pitches and facilities at Healy Park, Ballyrickard.

The event is a Golf Classic, which takes place on Friday 29th March (Good Friday) - at Tralee Golf Club.

Healy Park is used extensively by all Kerins O’Rahilly’s teams, especially our juveniles and ladies for Kerry LGFA games.

We estimate that the refurbishment works planned, will cost in the region of €45,000, involving renovations to existing dressing rooms and toilets

and extensive repairs to the roof and internal floors.

This will be the first phase of a five-year plan, which will ultimately involve replacing the existing dressing rooms with a permanent structure to include better dressing rooms, a sports hall and a gymnasium.

Club Chairman Oliver Molloy describes Healy Park as the club’s ‘nursing ground’.

“It’s where we bring our kids to experience what it’s like to be part of a club, to make friends that will last a lifetime, and to coach them to become the very best players they can be,” he says.

“As a club we have a duty of care to our juvenile and LGFA players to ensure that they have the best facilities possible. This fundraiser will enable us to bring our existing facilities to an acceptable level, while

giving us the opportunity to plan for the future.”

The team at Manor West Hotel Leisure Club is launching their annual sports ambassadors program. The 5 sport ambassador offerings are for those involved in sport from across multiple disciplines, in either team or individual categories. Any sport participant is applicable once you are over 18 years of age.

The sports ambassadors program includes Full Gym Membership to the Manor West Hotel Leisure Centre.

The leisure club has a state of the art sports performance room, cardio fitness gym and our Zero Gravity Fitness Studio, which is an affiliated club with Les Mills International.

Council invites application to Community Climate Action Programme

Kerry County Council announces available funding under the Community Climate Action Programme for 2024, totaling over €600,000 for projects promoting low-carbon and sustainable communities. Led by the Department of the Environment, the program aims to support community-based initiatives aligned with Ireland’s climate action and energy targets.

The funding is divided into two strands: Strand-1 focuses on building low-carbon communities, with Kerry County Council allocated €663,000 for projects in this area. Strand 1a facilitates cross-border projects with

communities in Northern Ireland.

Cllr Jim Finucane, Cathaoirleach of Kerry County Council, emphasizes the importance of community involvement in climate action. He encourages eligible not-for-profit community groups to apply for funding, highlighting the tangible impact these projects can have in achieving collective climate action goals.

10K Run: Our annual 10k run and 5k fun run have become fixtures on the racing circuit, drawing athletes from across Munster. Special thanks to Frank, Caitriona, and Tony for their efforts in organizing the event.

Research by Cork senior ladies footballer Orlagh Farmer sheds light on why girls drop out of sports early. Enjoyment and friendship play significant roles. Our club prioritizes fun and participation over winning.

WARRIORS TRIUMPH OVER KILLORGLIN IN LOCAL DERBY Garvey’s Tralee Warriors redeemed themselves with a decisive 91-76 victory over Flexachem KCYMS in a packed Tralee Sports Complex.

After a strong start by Killorglin, the Warriors surged ahead, securing a 15-point win with dominant second and final quarters.

Despite a tense third quarter, the Warriors pulled ahead with key plays from Jordan and Doles, entering the fourth quarter with a lead. They sealed the win with an impressive offensive display, led by Jordan, Doles, and Jokubaitis, while Killorglin’s Terry Winn provided some resistance.

Next, the Warriors face EJ Sligo Allstars in a challenging away game, aiming to continue their winning streak. Tip-off at Mercy College, Sligo, is at 7:30 pm next Saturday.
