Thomas is wondering what the new proposals to amend the constitution are about?

The changes to the wording of the constitution set out in bold hereunder in Article 41.1.1

Article 41.1.1° “The State recognises the Family, whether founded on marriage or on other durable relationships, as the natural primary and fundamental unit group of Society, and as a moral institution possessing inalienable and imprescriptible rights, antecedent and superior to all positive law.”

Families have long been recognised by societies as the basic building block of society and family bonds are very important in Irish Society. It is estimated at least a third of all Irish Families are outside the traditional married family model. This new provision involves extending the meaning of family to include all family units. This is part of the European Convention on Human Rights which recognises all family units. Under our present constitution only marital family units were recognised and protected by the state. This leaves all the multiple non-marital family units without proper state protection and recognition although we do have the cohabitee legislation which protects qualifying cohabitants. The new provision will protect all family units e.g. a grandmother looking after her grandchild, foster care family units, blended families and all the myriad of non-marital caring family units within Irish Society. Furthermore it will delete part of Article 41.3.1 so that while married families continue to be protected other families can be protected as well. It will remove the restriction in the constitution which provides that the state shall only protect the marital family.

“The State pledges itself to guard with special care the institution of Marriage, on which the Family is founded, and to protect it against attack.”

The second amendment is proposing to delete the following section

Article 41.2.1° “In particular, the State recognises that by her life within the home, woman gives to the State a support without which the common good cannot be achieved.” Article 41.2.2° “The State shall, therefore, endeavour to ensure that mothers shall not be obliged by economic necessity to engage in labour to the neglect of their duties in the home.” This section has long been recognised as archaic, sexist and needlessly role determining and rigid. The new proposal will be promote equality recognising the unique and important role of all carers in Irish Society regardless of their gender. And replace it with the following which will recognise the significance and importance of carers in our society.

“The State recognises that the provision of care, by members of a family to one another by reason of the bonds that exist among them, gives to Society a support without which the common good cannot be achieved, and shall strive to support such provision.”

Law quip: “Laws and institutions must go hand in hand with the progress of the human mind. As new discoveries are made, new truths discovered and manners and opinions change with the change of circumstances, institutions must advance also to keep pace with the times.” ~ Thomas Jefferson

Tralee Grandad’s Leap Year Proposal to Parachute Jump For Kerry Mental Health Association

Dan O’Donoghue, a 65-year-old from Tralee, is swapping the idea of free travel for a parachute jump to raise funds for Kerry Mental Health Association and inspire his grandsons. Scheduled for April 27th in Edenderry, Co Offaly, the jump aims to collect over €2500 via www.idonate.ie/fundraiser/ breakinggrandad.

The funds will support the implementation of free and accessible mental health first aid training in Kerry. Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) offers initial assistance to those facing mental health challenges until professional help arrives or the crisis resolves. Training one MHFA instructor costs €2500, plus additional expenses for licensing from Mental Health First Aid Ireland. Dan, a respected trainer in Business

Development and referral strategies, is motivated by the anxiety young people experience. He aims to show his grandsons and others that daunting challenges can be overcome. Reflecting on his own battles with anxiety, he stresses the importance of mental health first aid in countering the negative impact of social media.

Q. What can I do about recurring back pain?

A. If you are experiencing a recurring ache or pain in your back it may be time to get it assessed.

A. Yes there is.

There is acute back pain which happens suddenly and usually lasts a few days to a few weeks. There is subacute back pain which can come on suddenly or over time and last 4-12 weeks. Then there is chronic back pain which may come on quickly or slowly and lasts longer than 12 weeks and occurs daily.

Q. How do I know if my pain or muscular or nerve?

A. Nerve pain tends to be stabbing, tingling, and sharp while muscular pain is dull and steady or crampy and spasmodic.

Q. What can be done to fix my pain?

A. First of all we will assess you here in the clinic to establish what is causing and contributing to your pain. Then through hands on therapy combined with corrective exercises we will work to get you back moving unrestricted and pain free.

A COP PULLED A CAR OVER FOR SPEEDING

When the Cop asked the driver why he was traveling 95mph, the driver answered that he was a juggler on his way to do a show for a birthday party and didn’t want to be late. The Cop told the driver he was fascinated by juggling, and if the driver would do a little juggling for him that he wouldn’t give him a ticket. The driver told the Cop that he had sent all of his equipment on ahead and didn’t have anything to juggle. The Cop told him that he had some flares in the trunk of his patrol car, and asked if he could juggle them. The juggler stated that he could, so the Cop got three flares, lit them and handed them to the juggler. While the man was doing his juggling act, a car pulled in behind the patrol car. A drunk got out, watched the performance briefly, went over to the patrol car, opened the rear door and got in. The Cop observed him doing this, and went over to the patrol car, opened the door and asked the drunk what he thought he was doing. The drunk replied, “You might as well haul my butt to jail, cause there’s NO way I’ll pass that test.”

FIFTY DOLLARS

Morris and his wife Esther went to the state fair every year, and every year Morris would say, “Esther, I’d like to ride in that helicopter”.

Esther always replied, “I know Morris, but that helicopter ride is 50 dollars -- and 50 dollars is 50 dollars”. One year Esther and Morris went to the fair, and Morris said, “Esther, I’m 85 years old. If I don’t ride that helicopter, I might never get another chance.”

Esther replied, “Morris that helicopter is 50 dollars -- and 50 dollars is 50 dollars”. The pilot overheard the couple and said, “Folks I’ll make you a deal. I’ll take the both of you for a ride. If you can stay quiet for the entire ride and not say a word I won’t charge you! But if you say one word, it’s 50 dollars.” Morris and Esther agreed and up they went. The pilot did all kinds of fancy maneuvers, but not a word was heard. He did his daredevil tricks over and over again, but still not a word. When they landed, the pilot turned to Morris and said, “By golly, I did everything I could to get you to yell out, but you didn’t. I’m impressed!” Morris replied, “Well, to tell you the truth, I almost said something when Esther fell out, but you know -- 50 dollars is 50 dollars.”

WE’RE GOING TO THE ZOO!

A gorilla dies of old age at a zoo right before the zoo opens. It is the only gorilla at the zoo since they are not very profitable. However, the gorilla is their most popular attraction by far, and they cannot afford to go a day without it. So the zoo owner asks one of his workers to wear a gorilla suit they have in storage for an extra $100 a day if he will go in the gorilla cage and pretend to be the gorilla until the zoo can afford a new one.

Quickly, the new “gorilla” becomes the most popular craze at the zoo. People from all over are coming to see the “Human-like” gorilla.

About a month in, the craze has started to wear off. So, to get peoples’ attention back, he decides to climb over his enclosure and hang from the net ceiling above the lions den next to him. A large crowd of people gather watching the spectacle in awe and terror. Suddenly the man loses his grip and falls to the floor of the lion’s den. The man starts screaming “HELP!! HELP!!!” Suddenly a lion pounces him from behind and whispers in his ear, “Shut the heck up right now or you’re going to get us both fired.”
