Daffodil Day 2019 - Friday, 22nd March The Irish Cancer Society’s Daffodil Day takes place this year on the Friday 22nd March 2019. Daffodil Day is the biggest and longest running fundraising day for the Irish Cancer Society and is celebrating its 32st anniversary this year. On Daffodil Day thousands of volunteers around Ireland sell daffodil pins and flowers to raise money for the Society’s free, nationwide services for those with, and affected by, cancer in Ireland. Why should you support Daffodil Day? Every single euro donated during Daffodil Day makes a difference to people with cancer and their families throughout Ireland. A vital part of the work of the Irish Cancer Society involves helping those at the end of their cancer journey to die in their own home, surrounded by those who love them. 4

This service is carried out by our Night Nurses who provide excellent care in the patients’ home, giving them comfort, familiarity and dignity in the last nights of their life.
On average in Kerry, 75 to 80 families availed of the Daffodil Nursing services each year, this represented 400 to 450 nights of care at a cost of €150,000. The Irish Cancer Society is the only organisation which provides this service and receives no government funding. To provide this essential service, and many more cancer support services, the Irish Cancer Society relies entirely on the generosity of their supporters. If any School/Group are interested in running a fundraiser for Daffodil Day, or if anyone would like to volunteer on the day please make contact with any of the Friday 15th March 2019

Tour De Ballyfinnane Cycle - Are You Going? Following the resounding success of previous year’s cycles, ‘Tour de Ballyfinnane’ Cycle will take place again this year on Saturday, 6th April 2019 @10 am. This is the 6th year of the cycle which is organised by the parents of the children at Ballyfinnane National School with the support of the school board, the local community and local businesses. “All funds raised are in aid of Scoil Naomh Cárthach, Ballyfinnane, which is a twoteacher, co-educational, rural Catholic school. A few tickets will always tend to turn up before the throw-in of a GAA match and its no different for Kerry v Mayo on this Saturday in Austin Stack Park, throw-in at 7pm.
But you have to work a little for that elusive ticket, talk to people, send a few texts, turn up an hour before the match and generally ask around. However, there is another plan afoot as the hospitality sector 6

MAGGIE MAE & PATRICKS DAY Mornings of cold winds & overcast skies cover the great kingdom of Kerry this month of march. Maggie mae & her fairy folk friends come together with the land’s leprechauns for the visit of her very good friend Pats. St Patrick this is to you and me. St Patrick & Maggie met many many moons ago when pats was on his mission to banish all snakes from the great isle of Erin. The kingdom of Kerry was his final destination. St Patrick announced his presence strongly, dominating the earth beneath his feet with intentions to vibrate the county of Kerry to rid the badness of snakes throughout the fields that spread across this great land. The fairy folk, and leprechaun’s who live here felt threatened by St Patrick as they did not know of this quest that must be made to save the people of Ireland. They called on Maggie mae to put a stop to this disturbance which distracted them from their high-flying activities & magic making works that involved poison potions, & potions of health & wealth. Maggie Mae is the queen of all things great on the special grounds of the Kingdom of Kerry. Maggie was born to Anajata the most beautiful fairy in all the land. Her dad is Gloster the handsomest leprechaun that has ever Glazed the kingdom. Anajata and Gloster were never meant to marry as they came from completely different worlds of magic. However, mother nature was a lot more powerful then the magic they both held & in turn they fell in love Madly deeply truly. A year after they married, they gave birth to Maggie Mae. Maggie was to be known as a ferlup half fairy half leprechaun. Mother nature blessed Maggie with immense power & beauty and strength. This was all wrapped in humility so that Maggie would always know her limits.
Maggie’s hair is a sandy coloured curl, her eyes of bright blue, sparkling silver pointed eyebrows, her nose is perfectly formed a short distance over her firmly shaped lips & sharp jaw structure. Maggie was true to her friends near and far. Yet was always envied for her fascinating shoes. Upon delivered notice through wind & raindrops that hurried from tree to tree came the immediate concerns of the magical land & all whom dwelled there. Maggie very quickly understood the unease of her dear friends & acted without hesitation. Maggie Ordered, spread out take safe place in height. Maggie suited her body in armoured lycra that moved swiftly as she moved with such speed. She carried a shouldered chest brace that mirrored her visions. Maggie had outstretched wings of pure gold that withstood all types of weather. Her shoes extended blades that cut through several feet of grass could crush rock & skim through waters. St Patrick knew of the kingdom & had heard about the fairy folk down through the years. He called out loudly,” Here ye special ones, I come in peace to invade the soil with spiritual dominance. I want to banish all snakes right of the cliffs edge to drown in the great Atlantic. My duty is to do good by you & your land & be gone. My faith & trust is in the universe & the Glowing energy that provides all safety for colour & sparkle to keep our Erin fresh in love and pasture. It is your help that’s needed not your doubts. Maggie flew towards st Patrick announced that he yield. She introduced herself & the lands existence of the dwellers that resided alongside her off the edge of dun quin. Maggie echoed St Patricks request in a linguistic manner for the magical folk to understand. The magical folk, St Patrick and Maggie Mae came together & took action with his mission banishing into the Atlantic what no longer belonged here. They all cheered

knowing the land was lighter and safer. St Patrick thanked Maggie & the magical folk, honouring them each with a 3-leaf clover for bravery. Maggie insisted they rest & eat upon completion of gods work. They were fuelled with lots of swish. Leaf bark cake, gooseberries & blackberries. It was Irelands very own mad hatter’s tea party. In thanks to St Patrick they rose up in strength and flight covered Ireland from top to bottom with dust & drops of colourful liquid creating powerful light that stretched from north to south. With its oval like shape that treats our soil. The magical folk & Maggie mae gave Ireland the rainbow

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... Chefs join forces to raise funds for Recovery Haven Kerry Cancer Support House at The Rose Hotel this April Four of Ireland’s finest chefs and former colleagues are joining forces once again to create a dining experience to remember at The Rose Hotel, Tralee. Executive chef of The Rose Hotel, Odran Lucey, executive chef of The Marker Hotel, Gareth Mullins, executive pastry chef and executive chef of The Merrion Hotel, Paul Kelly and Ed Cooney will come together on the 5th April 2019 to cook a five-course meal at The Rose Hotel to raise funds for Recovery Haven Kerry Cancer Support House. The evening will kick-off with snacks created by the students from IT Tralee with all ingredients sourced from Taste Kerry producers and welcome drinks, followed by a special menu prepared by the four chefs. Ed Cooney will begin with a crispy fried hen egg with asparagus and Caesar dressing while the fish course is in the hands of Odran Lucey and the team at The Rose Hotel who will be serving a spa crab meat tian with apple, ginger and seared tuna loin. Main courses will include a choice of slip sole
meunière by Ed Cooney or fillet of Irish beef with roast onion puree and beef rib and foie gras bons bons by Gareth Mullins, and dessert course by Paul Kelly will be a surprise “Tralee Rose” followed by an Irish cheese course. Each course on the evening will be accompanied by a selection of wines sponsored by The French Market. The team of chefs behind this worthy event first worked together 20 years ago in The Merrion Hotel and have remained firm friends over the years. Speaking about the event, The Rose Hotel’s head chef Odran Lucey said “It’s important to us all to give something back, to highlight the good food on our doorstep, the positives of our profession and help our chosen charity.” Siobhan MacSweeney, Manager at Recovery Haven said “We are absolutely thrilled to join forces with The Rose Hotel and the other amazing chefs involved in this event, as it promises to be a truly memorable night. In 2018, over 3,500 people came to us for help at our three cancer support centres across the
county – an increase of 30% on the previous year and a record for the charity so we are absolutely delighted that The Rose Hotel have chosen to help us fundraise in this way.” The evening will be hosted by Elaine Kinsella of Radio Kerry and music will be provided by Celebration for those who wish to dance the night away after dinner. There will also be a range of spot prizes including a weekend in the Fairmount St. Andrews in Scotland with a round of golf as well as
overnight stays at The Merrion Hotel and The Marker Hotel. The evening on 5th April will start with a drinks reception at 7pm followed by dinner at 8pm and tickets are available for €80 per person. WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... Chamber welcome Business Incentive Scheme for Tralee TRALEE Chamber Alliance has welcomed
the news that Kerry County Council is due to publish a variation of a Business Incentive Programme that the Chamber submitted to the local authority last year. The list of business incentive proposals was presented to Kerry County Council in a positive move to re-energise efforts to fill vacant properties within Tralee Town and to generate more employment. Kerry County Council is due to publish a Business Incentive Scheme (BIS) to enhance Tralee Town Centre as a retail destination. It incorporates some of the suggestions from Tralee Chamber Alliance in relation to the provision of grant support equivalent to a decreasing percentage of the rate paid over three years. Tralee Chamber Alliance will continue to work with Kerry County Council throughout the six months pilot period of the Scheme in order to ensure there is an uptake by landlords and prospective tenants.
Seachtain Na Gaeilge at Balloonagh Scoil Eoin ! Here in Scoil Eoin Balloonagh Primary, Seachtain na Gaeilge
incorporates all things Irish! Our Irish heritage is explored in all aspects of the curriculum, as we impress upon the children a sense of identity and belonging. Equally, a Céad Míle Fáilte is extended to all children from other countries in our school, as all the children enjoy many projects in visual arts, music, song and dance! In keeping with tradition in Scoil Eoin Balloonagh, the whole school community brushes up on their Cúpla Focal. Highlights of the week include our very own“Trad Band” with Mrs. Siobhán Meehan and our resident “Set Dancers” with Peggy Fitzgerald. This year we have a “Seó Taillainne” where children are invited to show off their talents as, they sing a song a song or say a poem in Irish! We are brushing up on our Siege of Ennis for the Céilí too! “The “Mórshiúl na Scoile” is a favourite with the children, as they dress up for our very own St. Patrick’s Day Parade around the school grounds, led by “St. Patrick” himself!” ,according to Mrs. Mary V. Dennehy, Seachtain na Gaeilge Coordinator. Seachtain na Gaeilge is action packed as ever in Scoil Eoin, Balloonagh Primary. Mol an Óige agus tiocfaidh sí!

• Key lifestyle changes that must happen: 1) Weight Control 2) Exercise 3) Nutrition. The earlier you take action, the better chance you have at preventing Type 2 Diabetes. • You need accountability: sign up for an exercise class or personal training, it’s a lot harder to make excuses and skip your class/gym session when someone is expecting you there. • Have a plan: It’s easy to feel self-conscious at the gym and feel like everyone is watching your every move. Going in with a plan of what to do at the gym i.e. what machines and how many sets is a great way to avoid the whole wandering around aimlessly. • No one is looking at you: Everyone there is just like you, they want to get in and get out. They were once new members to the gym and unsure of what to do. If your there to be healthier, fitter, stronger than your in the right place and have no reason to feel uneasy. • Put on some headphones: let the music motivate you - working out to a playlist you love will ease anxiety by blocking out the people around you. • Consistency: with both nutrition and exercise is essential. I recommend a mix of cardio and resistance training for weight loss and long-term weight management along with a healthy diet. Resistance training increases your insulin sensitivity, making it easier to manage your pre-diabetes and your weight. To start I recommend ten minutes cardio per day and 30-40 minutes weight training three times a week. Cardio can be increased as you lose weight; weight loss means less impact on your joints in particular your knees.

Bexblah Beauty HELLO BEAUTIFUL PEOPLE! I hope you are all having the most amazing week! I want to wish you all a Happy St Patrick’s Day - if you’re in Roundy’s over the weekend have a cocktail of some sort for me! This week I want to talk about my go to face for work. Since getting my new job in Valonz in Sydney and becoming a daily bus commuter, I really value a speedy getting ready process in the morning. Step 1) Cleanse & moisturize face - I never skip this step. Throughout the night you’re tossing and turning and sweating which is blocking those pores. Cleansing your face in the morning to ensure it’s clean & ready for the day ahead is key. Step 2) After my moisturizer I go straight in with one of the Clarins SOS Primers (the fatigue or radiance ones are my favorites). These primers really brighten & awaken my skin. Step 3) Foundation - after I clean and dampen my beauty blender I go in with either the Gorgio Armani Luminous Silk Foundation or if I’m feeling a bit more coverage then I use the Too Faced Born This Way. Step 4) I set with my Laura Mercier Translucent Powder, Bronze with the Clarins Sun Kissed Bronzer & Highlight with the Anastasia Beverly Hills X Amrezy Highlighter. I then use my Milani Luminoso Blush. Step 5) Brows: The Benefit Brow Zing is my most recent go to as it’s so quick and easy to use in the mornings. Step 6) Eyes - Usually I just use a light brown shadow to define the eyes, a pop of mascara & then if I wanna feel glam I use my Stila Magnificent Metals Kitten Karma Glitter - which takes two seconds and makes you look like you made a way more effort. Step 7) I set everything using my Morphe Setting Spray (if I accidentally skip this step my makeup honestly does not feel right) Step 8) Lips - Either a red lip (Kylie Cosmetics Red Velvet) or my Wet n Wild Chestnut lip liner & some gloss and I’m good to go! I know for some people that might seem like a lot, to others it might seem like nothing, but I honestly zoom through it in 10-15 mins and I’m good to go. TOP TIP: A red lip makes everything look more glam!

BEXBLAH
FITNESS!
HELLO STRONG PEOPLE!
I hope you’re all having a great week. This week I just wanted to talk about the time of year we’re at currently. This time of year is a tricky one with regards to fitness and health, summer is around the corner… and everyone and their mother’s are talking about the lastest diet, no carbs til marbs, and whatever other fads are going around! They also think that whatever they’re doing is the best thing yet and EVERYONE needs to do it. You hear phrases like, “come monday now I’m giving up the bread” Another thing, why wait til Monday? Monday is just a day. If you really want to get healthy/ loose fat/gain muscle why not start as soon
as possible?! Who cares what day it is! If you’re going to put it off til Monday, you’re probably going to keep pushing the Monday back further and further, Monday will actually be the symbol of your procrastination rather than anything else.
If you’re unsure about what to do, there are SO many health and fitness facilities in Tralee to suit absolutely everyone, so get out there and find the one for you.
If you know you’re trying your best and you feel you’re informed about your nutrition, keep it up! Don’t fall into any fad diets! Remember, they don’t work long term and they’re most definitely not good for your health! And trust me, I know. It’s 1000 percent easier said than done… But once you want it and want to do it for you and you only, the rest comes easy.
On another note, I have a “Less Guilty Cookies” recipe for you all this week! I tried them this week and I would highly recommend. I got this recipe from ChocolateCoveredKatie.com, check out the website she has so many recipes!! • • • • • • • • • •
oat flour (140g) 1/4 tsp salt 1/2 tsp baking soda 4 tbsp coconut sugar (brown sugar will also work) 4 tbsp xylitol or evaporated cane juice (white sugar will also work) 1/4 to 1/3 cup chopped macadamia nuts (or walnuts) 3 tbsp to 1/2 cup chocolate chips (Throw in a big handful. I never bother to measure.) 1 tsp pure vanilla extract 2 tbsp vegetable or melted coconut oil 3-5 tbsp milk of choice, as needed
Instructions Healthy Chocolate Chip Cookies Recipe: Preheat oven. Combine all dry ingredients and mix very well. Add wet, and form into a big ball. Now make little balls from the big one. For soft cookies, refrigerate until cold (otherwise, just bake right away). Bake 7 minutes, or until they’ve spread out and look just a little undercooked. Remove from oven when they’re still a little undercooked, then it’s important to let cookies cool at least 10 minutes before trying to remove from tray, as they’ll continue to cook while cooling. For soft cookies, store in a lidded plastic container. For crispy cookies, store in a lidded glass container.
You can find me on Facebook ‘Bexblah Makeup’ or Instagram ‘Bexblah’. 32

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... Did You Know That 27 People Die of Heart Attack In Ireland Every Day? Heartfelt Cardio Screening is coming to your area soon, with the revolutionary BPro pulse wave analysis device, providing affordable and accurate heart and artery screenings. The BPro device is a completely mobile test kit, comprising a wrist sensor and a laptop. It can be brought to any location, including your workplace or organisation which makes it ideal for sports clubs, health centres etc. Screenings are carried out by a Healthstats certified technician and a full printout of the results are given on the day. The procedure is noninvasive and completely painfree. The information provided by our BPro screenings can
help doctors decide whether more invasive investigations are required thereby saving patients further unnecessary trauma. Our BPro heart screening is a major advance in science for monitoring the cardiovascular health of people without the need for invasive and traumatic procedures. The BPro and A-Pulse Casp was developed by Healthstats in Singapore and can calculate a person’s Central Aortic Systolic Pressure (CASP) (blood pressure closest to the heart) accurately and non-invasively. The A-Pulse has been validated in clinical trials to have an accuracy of 99.17%, as compared to
the angiogram. The BPro Cardio Pulse-Wave screening measures the aortic pressure as well as the flexibility of your arteries. BPro Technology has been validated by the Association of Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI) and the European Society of Hypertension as well as the National Heart Centre of Singapore. It is FDA (Food & Drug Administration) certified, CE (Confirmité Européene) approved and also approved by the British Hypertension Society. The cost of an individual BPro test is €50 per adult with a 10% discount (€90) for a couple. There is also a
20% discount for groups of 12 or more people e.g. Sports Clubs, Business Screening etc. Heartfelt Cardio Screening will bring the BPro to Tralee, Clonmel, Kilkenny,Limerick over the coming months. HEALTHY RECIPES for 2019
Don’t ignore wonderful Cabbage!
Cabbage is a wonderful vegetable that’s just got a bad reputation, as it’s always boiled to death! The dense, leafy heads don’t get the respect they deserve and can be so so tasty when cooked just right! SWEET AND SOUR ROASTED CABBAGE WEDGES Serves 4 INGREDIENTS • • • • • • • •
2 tablespoons olive oil 2 tablespoons cider vinegar 1 tablespoon brown sugar 1 teaspoon whole-grain Dijon mustard 1 teaspoon grated garlic 1/4 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 1 head napa (Chinese) cabbage, cut lengthwise into quarters
METHOD Place a large roasting pan in oven. Preheat oven and pan to 180. Combine first 7 ingredients in a small bowl. Coat cut sides of cabbage with oil. Place cabbage, cut sides down, on preheated pan; bake 6 minutes. Turn cabbage onto other cut side; bake an additional 6 minutes. Remove pan from oven. Heat grill to high. Brush cabbage evenly with oil mixture; grill 3 minutes or until browned and caramelized.
GRILLED CABBAGE SALAD Serves 4 When chopped cabbage meets grill, a beautiful thing happens. Once you fire this simple summer side, you’ll start to wonder what other fresh veggies you can toss on the barbecue for your next cookout.
INGREDIENTS • • • • • • •
1 (2-pound) head red cabbage, cut into 8 wedges 6 tablespoons mayonnaise 2 tablespoons finely chopped fresh chives 3 tablespoons cider vinegar 2 tablespoons water 2 teaspoons sugar 3/4 teaspoon black pepper
METHOD Preheat grill or grill pan to medium-high heat. Coat grill rack and cabbage with cooking oil Add cabbage to grill; grill 12 minutes or until lightly charred, turning occasionally. Remove from grill. Combine mayonnaise and remaining ingredients in a bowl, stirring with a whisk; drizzle evenly over cabbage

LAUGHTER ....THE BEST MEDICINE ! FOUR EXPECTANT FATHERS.
Four expectant fathers were in a Minneapolis hospital waiting room, while their wives were in labour. The nurse tells the first man, “Congratulations! You’re the father of twins!” “What a coincidence! I work for the Minnesota Twins baseball team!” The nurse returns and tells the second man, “You are the father of triplets!” “Wow, what a coincidence! I work for 3M Corporation!” When the nurse tells the third man that his wife has given birth to quadruplets. “Another coincidence! I work for Four Seasons Hotel!” At this point, the fourth guy faints. When he comes to, the others ask what’s wrong. “What’s wrong?! I work for Seven-Up!”
A JET IS FLYING ACROSS THE COUNTRY WHEN THE PASSENGERS BEGAN TO FEEL SHAKING.
The pilot announced, “Uh Folks, we just experienced some turbulence, which caused some engine troubles on our left wing. Luckily, this jet is equipped with 4 engines, and we still have 3 functional engines! Because of the engine issues we will be arriving at our destination 30 minutes later than scheduled.” The passengers all groaned and went back to sleeping, reading, and watching their movies. Not long afterwards, they felt more turbulence, and again heard the pilot say, “OK so we just lost our second engine, but not to worry, we are still running well on two engines. We will arrive at our destination 1 hour later than scheduled.” The passengers exchanged worried looks and started talking among themselves. Again, they felt the jet dip and rumble, and again, they heard the pilot say, “We lost our third engine, and we will arrive 2 hours later than scheduled at our destination. My apologies for the inconveniences this delay is causing all of you.” This time, a frustrated looking passenger wearing a business suit stood up and yelled, “At this rate, if we lose another engine, we’ll never get there!”
DUMB FISHERMAN.
Two buddies are fishing, but they haven’t caught anything all day. Then, another fisherman walks by with a huge load of fish. They ask him “excuse me, but where did you get all those fish?” The other fisherman replies, “If you just go down the stream until the water isn’t salty, there are a ton of hungry fish.” They thank him and go on their way. 15 minutes later, one fisherman says to the other “fill the bucket up with water and see if the water is salty.” He dips the bucket in the stream and drinks some. “Nope. Still salty.” 30 minutes later, he asks him to check again. “Nope, still salty.” One our later they check again. “Nope. Still salty.” “This isn’t good,” the fisherman finally says. “We have been walking for almost two hours and the water is still salty!” “I know,” says the other. “And the bucket is almost empty!”

TORQUING CARS! VAN DRIVERS RISKING FINES FOR PHONE USE
More than half of van drivers in Ireland and the UK admit to not having hands-free phone kit, or having it but not using it while driving A new international survey by VW has revealed that more than half of van drivers have admitted to using a mobile phone at the wheel without using a hands-free device. That’s despite the introduction of tougher laws on phone use at the wheel in 2017, as well as the fact that a third of drivers admitted to not using the built-in phone kit that’s fitted to their vanThe shocking results revealed that on average van drivers spent 35 minutes on the phone in their vans, with one in 10 spending two hours on the phone while driving. Yet the survey also revealed that 23 per cent of van drivers didn’t have hands-free phone kits in their vehicles, and a third of participants said that while their vans had a hands-free kit, they didn’t use it. Sarah Cox, head of marketing at Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles that commissioned the survey, said: “Our figures show that many van drivers don’t have or aren’t using a Bluetooth hands-free kit behind the wheel – risking not only a fine and potential ban, which would damage business, but, more seriously, a potentially fatal accident. All models in the VW Commercial Vehicles range are fitted with Bluetooth, while Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone connectivity are also offered. It’s a similar story for rival manufacturers, too, with the majority of makers now offering Bluetooth and smartphone connectivity as standard even in their cheapest models.
FOREIGN-MADE CARS SUBJECT TO 10% IMPORT TARIFFS UNDER OFFICIAL NO-DEAL BREXIT GUIDANCE
Cars made outside the UK and imported thetre for sale will be subject to 10 per cent important tariffs under official no-deal trade rules. With last night’s defeat of Theresa May’s deal in the Commons making a no-deal scenario more likely than ever, the government has published official tariffs that will - if no-deal goes ahead - add 10 per cent to the cost of importing “fully finished” foreign-made cars. The UK’s automotive manufacturing industry produces around 1.5 million cars each year, but 1.2 million of these are exported, meaning almost all of the 2.3 million cars they bought in 2018 were imported.Following the vote, Volkswagen was clear that additional costs caused by no-deal would be passed on to consumers. Ralf Brandstatter, chief operating officer of the VW brand, called the result “disappointing”, adding: “if tariffs should come then we probably would also have to think about pricing. There would be these effects that we would be facing from import duties and we would have to pass these on to customers.”
TOYOTA ANNOUNCES A CONCEPT LUNAR VEHICLE
The Japanese auto manufacturer has teamed up with JAXA to design a lunar rover with a cruising range of 10,000km Toyota has joined forces with the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), with the aim of producing a manned, pressurised lunar rover. Powered by a fuel cell electric drivetrain, the pair are targeting a total lunarsurface range of more than 10,000km (around 6,200 miles). Should a physical version of the six-wheeled rover reach production, it’ll measure six metres long, five metres wide and almost four metres tall. As such, it would be twice as long, twice as wide and almost five times the height of the Moon Buggy used on the Apollo 15 mission.
VOLKSWAGEN PROMISES NEARLY 70 NEW ELECTRIC CAR MODELS WITHIN A DECADE
ANY lingering doubts about the impetus of the stampede towards electric cars (EVs) can be dispelled this week with Volkswagen alone promising nearly 70 new models within a decade. That is almost 20 more than previously promised. There is no doubt that the company whose dubious diesel actions speeded up the advent of EVs are intent on taking a lead in the new world. They are now saying they will build 22m vehicles on the group’s electric platforms over the next decade. That is up from a previously projected 15m.The VW group drive has already begun, albeit in nothing like the volumes we are being led to expect in future.Audi has started sales of its e-tron electric SUV. Porsche is poised to unveil its first electric model, the Taycan, in the autumn. And we’ll see Volkswagen’s own Golf-sized I.D. hatchback and I.D. Crozz electric crossover before the end of the year - but in reality for sale next year. There will be EVs from SKODA and SEAT too.The group has also ‘signed off’ on a major decarbonisation deal so there will be a CO2-neutral balance in all areas by 2050, including production, supply chain and administration. The development of solid-state batteries is widely regarded as critical for future EVs but is going to take time to reach production potential. The company also plans to install 400 fast-charge stations along Europe’s major roads and highways by 2020 in collaboration with industry partners in IONITY.And that is just the VW story. Every other car-maker is flat-out EV-driven too. (Indo motoring )

TALKING SPORT WITH THE TRALEE ADVERTISER EVERYTHING’S COMING UP ROSES!
with “The Voice” Pat Harnett
FAI NATIONAl P.R.O. OF THE YEAR TRALEE ON A SPORTING ROLL: Tralee is certainly on a sporting roll at the moment with two more high profile sporting events sold out again this weekend. Following on from the huge success on and off the field of the Kerry v Dublin game this Saturday night it is Mayo who are the visitors with a 7pm throw-in. Once again all the tickets are gone for this game which will be played under lights and is also on television. Kerry are flying high at the top of the League and unbeaten in their five game so far. Indeed amazingly Peter Keane is now up to 34 games unbeaten as minor and senior manager. Mayo are on 6 point and are level with Dublin but have an inferior scoring difference. They will be going all out to win to retain any outside chance they have of making the League final and they know if they win in Tralee it will go down to a last game showdown. There are reports that David Clifford and James O’Donoghue could feature on Saturday night which will be another big boost for the team. And with Paul Geaney and David Moran plus the Dr Crokes players still to come back Kerry football is certainly in great shape ahead of an exciting few months. Kerry know that while they have one foot in the League final they won’t want it to go down to the final game of the campaign and will be hoping to get the job finished on Saturday night. As part of the build-up to the game Kerry will again have international music star Liam O’Connor performing in the stand to get the atmosphere going. The Dublin fans certainly brought a huge level of colour and excitement to the game and the town and while Mayo might not travel in as big a number those that will be in Austin Stacks Park will be no less passionate. It promises to be another huge night for Kerry football. The night before, Friday the 15th, Garvey’s Tralee Warriors will also be playing in front of a sold-out crowd in the Tralee Sports Complex when they welcome C&S Neptune for an 8.15 tip-off. They took a giant step towards a first SuperLeague title for this incarnation of Tralee basketball with an 88-77 point win over League leaders Templeogue. The win was 11 points in the end

but the performance was even better in what was an amazing night for the sport that has a long history in the town. I went to the Complex at 6.30 to get a parking ahead of the 7.30pm game. The car park was full as was the Complex an hour before the game – has this ever happened before? The whole Warriors organisation from the door crew, stewards, MC etc deserve huge credit for the way they produce the game experience. And on Saturday night also took time to remember St Mary’s legend Joanne Wamsley who passed away last weekend and was honoured with a perfectly observed Minute’s Silence. The game itself was played at a cracking pace with the visitors leading 26-22 at the end of the first quarter. And when they jumped out to a 9 point lead the Warriors needed to respond and they certainly did. The whole squad were contributing at both ends of the court and by the half the home side led 47-44. The third quarter is vital in any basketball game and here the Warriors were superb. Their defence has been the hallmark of this great run and with Templeogue getting more frustrated the Warriors took command and were 70-56 ahead with the last ten minutes to play. And they were never going to let such a lead slip and they held on for what coach Pat Price said was a win that made him very proud of his side. “We are battered and bruised but the way we fought through the game was immense. Everything starts on defence and we were excellent and then we hit some huge three pointers which were probably worth four points in front of the home crowd. But this is just a step and we have some huge games to come.” The table makes sweet reading for the Warriors but also must be viewed with a sense of caution. Templeogue still lead on 39 points but have played 18 games. UCD Marian are second on 36 from 17 game. The Warriors come next also with 36 points but with their Cup runs have only played 16 games. They play two this weekend with Neptune (only 4 wins from 14) on Friday night and they will play again on Monday. That will leave them with a double header against UCD Marian the following week where again the game in the Complex will be a sell-out. CIRCUIT OF KERRY RALLY LAUNCHED AS WAS KINGDOM OF KERRY CHAMPIONSHIP: April 7th will see another huge Friday 15th March 2019
sporting event centred in Tralee with the Rose Hotel Circuit of Kerry Rally. The rally is a counting round of the Top Part West Coast Rally Championship and the Moriarty’s Centra Kingdom of Kerry Rally Championship. Clerk of the Course Eoin Duffin and his committee have selected stages in the Castleisland area including some that were used during the Circuit of Ireland. With Pairc Fermie and service at the host Rose Hotel the competitors will race over 3 loops of three stages – Mounteagle which will be the first, fourth and seventh stages, Headley’s Bridge being the second, fifth and eight stages and Knights Mountain which will be run as the third, sixth and ninth stages. The organisers have thanked in advance the residents on the stages and the marshals without whom rallies could not go ahead. Clerk of the Course Eoin Duffin also gave details of a town centre event the day before the rally where cars and crews will be in the Square which will be of great interest to fans young and old. The launch of the rally also doubled as the announcement of the second Moriarty’s Centra Kingdom of Kerry Championship. A number of crew have already signed up for the Championship which covers Kerry events. NOMINATIONS JUST REWARD FOR DOWLING: Liam Dowling is once again in the spotlight on the greyhound racing national scene. He has received three nominations for the 2018 National Greyhound Racing Awards for ‘Future Star’ with Ballymac Anton, Ballymac Arminta as ‘Bitch of the Year’ and Are Nagini in the ‘Stayer of the Year category. The winners will be announced at a reception in the Killashee House Hotel in Naas on March 24th. There was more good news for the Kerry doggie public with Ballymac native Bob Shanahan is getting the Special Merit Award along with Tim Keane. Bob has been a director of the Limerick Stadium and a member of the Local Authority. STAYING WITH THE DOGS: This Friday night at the Kingdom Greyhound Stadium are the semifinals of the Kingdom Stadium 325 yards stake. There is no racing on Saturday night but racing as normal on Sunday with the first of the 8 SIS races off at 6.36pm. The track is currently taking entries for the John and Mary Dowling Memorial Ai current 570 yards starting on March 22nd. The coursing bred unraced Novice 325 yards starting on Saturday March 30th and the Lee Strand A3 confined 550 yards which starts on April 19th. Entries for all the stakes are to go to the racing office on 061 448057.
NIAMH THE CHAMPION: Representing Presentation Secondary School Tralee Niamh O’Mahony is the Irish Life All Ireland Schools Cross Country Intermediate 3500m champion. She took the title at Clongowes Wood College in Clane and was at the front of the race from the start. She slowly began to extend her lead and by the line was over 80 metres ahead of the second placed finisher. Other successes on the athletics from came in the Masters Indoor Championships with Ursula Barrett taking silver in the W40 60m and long jump and bronze in the 200m and Tralee Harriers Patsy O’Connor brought home two gold medals in the M60 shot and 220m. In the Munster Schools Indoor Championships there were medals for a number of Tralee athletes including Orla O’Reilly, Cillian Griffin, Darragh Courtney, Mervyn Shalemba and Basit Oyebanji. LACEY CUP GOES TO KILLARNEY’S KISSANE: The easy option for the organisers of the Lacey Cup along with the host club Tralee Manor West would have been not to reschedule the race after it was snowed off the previous Sunday. But these are cycling fans first and they wanted to make sure this prestigious race was not going to miss a year. And credit must go to all involved who also had to get everything in place including a new course. They used much of the county championship course including the Headley’s Bridge loops and the finish at the climb where Conor Kissane won that county championship a few months ago. And the Killarney riders used that knowledge to jump clear inside the last 500 mteres to take the biggest race win of his career. From a Kerry point of view the young West Kerry rider Tom Moriarty (O’Leary Stone Kanturk) put in a great ride to take 4th and the first Junior home, John Brosnan from Killarney CC in 8th and the unlucky Cian Smailes who took 9th but would have been closer only for a late late puncture. The A4 race was won by Sliabh Luachra’s Dan Murphy with the Chain Gang’s Richie O’Sullivan in second and Killorglin CC’s Jason Costello third. The host club Tralee Manor West had two riders in the top 7 with Paudie O’Sullivan in 4th and Joe Roche in 7th. The Teddy Griffin Cup went to Paul Kennedy from Newcastlewest while Cian Smailes took the Jackie O’Connor Cup for being the top climber. TALKING SPORT WITH THE TRALEE ADVERTISER last weekend. Firstly the foresight of John Regan and the KDL to put in a seocnd All Weather was proven again last Sunday. Bray Wanderers were unable to host the Kerry 19’s so the game was switched to Mounthawk Park where the 17’s and 19’s played a double header. Early on it looked like it was going to be a lnog day for Billy Dennehy and James Sugrues u17’s are they were 2-0 down inside 35 minutes. Bray scored from afree kick and a penalty. But even though they were playing against the wind Kerry got on top and pulled one back in through Nathan Gleeson and by half time they were level thanks to a John Carmody goal. There was only one side in it in the second half and the comeback was completed when Owen Benson scored the winner late on. Darren Aherne’s u19’s were playing their first game and got off to a horrible start conceeding inside the first minute. However they dug in and despite conceeding a second did have chances to get back into the game. Both the 17’s and 19’s are at home to Shamrock Rovers on Saturday at 4pm in what will be tough games but both Kerry sides will be up for it. The Kerry 13’s and 15’s also begin their campaign this weekend with Monday games agaisnt Athlone Town. Unlike Mounthawk Park they cannot host a double header so the 15’s travel to the midlands while the 13’s are at home at 2.30. TRALEE CLUBS REPRESENTED ON 2019 KENNEDY CUP SQUAD: Kennedy Cup Head Coach Robin O’Day assisted by Noel White have sepoected their 20 for the 2019 Kennedy Cup whcih is only a few months away. The Kennedy Cup takes place in UL Limerick from June 11th to the 15th and Kerry are in Group 5 alongside Kildare, Clare and Limerick County. CHURCHILL COME UP WITH ALL THE RIGHT ANSWERS: The County Final of Scór Chiarraí Trath Na gCeisteanna took place at An tIonad Barr Feabhais, Currow, on Friday evening last with a place at the All-Ireland Finals awaiting the winners. 6 clubs from the Tralee area participated and 14 teams from around the county took part, viz, Club Naomh Pádraig, Churchill, The
John Mitchel Club, Tralee Parnells, Ballymacelligot, Abbeydorney, Currow, Annascaul, Laune Rangers, Asdee, Rathmore, Spá Chill Airne. There were 10 rounds of 8 Questions and, at the end of a pulsating competition, last year’s All-Ireland champions Churchill (Mícheál Mag Fhionnbhair, Pól Ó Cullota, Seán Ó Flaitheartaigh agus Diarmuid Ó Crualaoich) had full marks and they now progress to yet another All-Ireland Final. Laune Rangers and Spá Chill Airne were in joint second place with 75 marks each and former 3-times AllIreland champions, An Ráth Mhór, were hot on their heels!! Say this prayer three times for three days and your favour will be granted. Never known to fail. Must promise publication of prayer.
