Tralee Hosts Division Final of Toastmasters Contest

Last Saturday, Tralee became the pathway to the World Championship of Public Speaking as the region’s top Toastmasters gathered for the Division Final of the Toastmaster International Speech Contest and Evaluation Contest. This year holds special significance as it marks the centenary of Toastmasters International.

Hosted at St. Brendan’s Parochial Centre by Contest Chair Gerard Mannix DTM, Chief Judge Anthony Garvey DTM, and Division B Director James Finnegan, the event welcomed District 71 (UK and Ireland) Club Growth Director Mairead Dillon representing Toastmasters International. In the International Speech Contest, participants delivered original speeches lasting five to seven minutes. Michael Collins from Shannon emerged victorious, with Anne Hannan from Killarney in

second place and Larry Lyons from Roscrea in third.

In the Evaluation Contest, contestants critiqued a bespoke speech titled “Every Story is a Picture” by Toastmaster Sean Lyons. Michael Collins clinched first place again, followed by Vicky McCarthy from Tralee in second and Helsa Giles from Speak Easy in third. Collins’s double win earned him a spot in the District 71 (UK and Ireland) Finals in Portlaoise on May 10-12.

Attendees praised the event’s organization, the caliber of competition, and the warm hospitality extended to all participants.

7th International Fuel and Fire Conference underway in Tralee

135 delegates from across the globe were warmly received in Tralee last Monday at a formal reception held at the Tralee Bay Wetlands. Mayor of Kerry, Cllr Jim Finucane, extended a heartfelt welcome, assuring guests of the town’s renowned hospitality and top-notch conference facilities.

Chaired by Ciarán Nugent, a board member of the International Associate for Wildland Fires, the local organizing committee ensured the event’s success. Colette O’Connor, CEO of Tralee Chamber Alliance, and Cllr Mikey Sheehy, a Chamber Steering Committee

member, represented the local business community.

Cllr Mikey Sheehy emphasized the significance of hosting 130 international delegates, highlighting the opportunity to showcase Tralee, West Kerry, and Kerry as premier tourism destinations. He expressed hope that the delegates would become ambassadors for Kerry upon returning to their home countries.

Tralee poet launches new book capturing 20 years of work

Tralee poet Brian G McEnery launches his latest collection, “Four Eggs in a Basket,” on April 27th at 8 pm in The Square’s Cearnog pub. The book encapsulates 20 years of Brian’s poetry, delving into personal and reflective themes spanning science, technology, politics, and life.

Brian describes his emotions ahead of the launch, expressing excitement, anticipation, and trepidation, as the topics are deeply personal. The collection, originally planned as four separate books, evolved into one cohesive volume, reflecting coherence and synergy.

Each “egg” in the collection represents distinct themes: the challenges of technology and the human race, spiritual reflections on childhood, impossible love, and poignant musings on the loss of Brian’s former wife in 2019.

Brian, a former army officer with a PhD in Computation, intricately weaves his life experiences into his poetry, offering readers relatable insights and perspectives. Copies of “Four Eggs in a Basket” will be available for €15 at the launch or can be ordered via email.

1. Joey , Why did you choose the sport you compete in? My Dad played football with Stacks and my mom was big into sports so I was brought up with sports.

I played football rugby and hurling but football was by far the one I enjoyed the most. I grew up with the football in my hands !

2. To date, what is your greatest achievement in sport? My greatest achievement was probably beating Cork in the Munster minor semi final after extra time. That was a great one because there was such a big lead up into that game.Due to covid the championship was postponed by 9 months.

3. What is your ultimate goal that you have set for yourself? To be a starter for the Kerry seniors and win All -Irelands and also win championships with my club.

My parents, they’re always there for support when I need anything and they have a great passion for sport and football also.

5. What is your earliest memory of sport? Playing football in the garden with my dad.

6. If you were to play another sport, what would it be? Basketball, you’re sheltered inside from the rain and there’s a good crossover of skills between football and basketball.

7. Within the next year, what will be your main use of our facility here at Manor West Leisure Centre & Zero Gravity Gym ? (recovery, training, rehab etc?.) definitely recovery due to the amount of training I’m currently doing !

Minister Foley meets with three first time candidates for upcoming Local Elections

Local Fianna Fáil Minister, Norma Foley TD, has met with the three Fianna Fáil first time candidates now ratified to represent Fianna Fáil in the upcoming Local Elections on June 7th.

The three candidates include Anne O’Sullivan for the Tralee LEA, Ken O’Sullivan for the Kenmare LEA, and Michael Leane for the Listowel LEA. Anne O’Sullivan who is contesting the Tralee LEA, works as Minister Foley’s Parliamentary Assistant managing her constituency office. Ken O’Sullivan, a well-established Beaufort businessman, will be contesting the Kenmare LEA and Michael Leane, well-known

proprietor of Kirby’s Public House Ballyheigue will be contesting the Listowel LEA.

LASTA Youth Arts Festival Returns to Siamsa with Exciting Program

Siamsa Tíre Tralee has unveiled highlights for the 3rd Lasta National Arts Festival, scheduled from June 1st to 12th. Lasta, curated by and for young people, spans seven venues nationwide, from Letterkenny to Tralee and Galway to Portlaoise. Kerry’s Lasta 2024 lineup features a sing-along screening of “The Greatest Showman,” TikTok carpentry sensation Eoin Reardon’s workshops, Bothántaíocht showcasing young talent, a two-day multi-instrumental music workshop led by Rebecca McCarthy Kent, and a Pop-Up Choir session with Sorcha O’Connor. Young filmmakers can submit short films for the National Lasta Festival Online Short Film

Programme, while a Lasta Game Jam invites participants to create video games.

Participatory workshops include prop making with Nina Fern, acting workshops with Aaron Monaghan, and a theatre-making “WERKshop” with Xnthony. The Lasta program at Siamsa Tíre is curated by young Kerry curators Greta Curtin and Máirtín Ó’Caithasaigh, who received mentorship in various aspects of arts management.

Started in 2020, Lasta has evolved into a nationwide festival, emphasizing youth voices and choices. Nineteen young curators have collaborated to deliver a diverse and dynamic program, featuring

The Tralee International Bridge Congress 2024 wrapped up at the Rose Hotel, leaving a positive impact on the local and national bridge communities. Over the weekend, Kerry’s bridge players showcased their skills in competitions like Congress Pairs and Intermediate Pairs. Local standout performances included John O’Connor & Kelan O’Connor winning the Congress Pairs, underscoring the region’s bridge prowess. Anne Maria Mac Sweeney & Phillip Cretch claimed victory in the Intermediate Pairs, further showcasing local talent. The congress drew players from across Ireland for competitive matches emphasizing strategic play and teamwork. Grand Master Donal Garvey conducted a memorable session on expert hands, sharing valuable knowledge and encouraging players of all levels.
