LEGAL MATTERS CORNER MIRIAM MC GILLICUDDY ANSWERS YOUR LEGAL QUERIES My neighbours’ tree is blocking my view of the sea near my house. What rights do I have? Tree/hedge nuisance is a common problem between neighbours. Firstly, your neighbour has a right to privacy at a constitutional level and under Article 8 of the ECHR which states that: ‘Everyone has the right to respect for his private and family life, his home.’ However, trees can also become an eyesore and view blocker for neighbours. It is also the owner’s responsibility to maintain the trees to ensure that they are not rotten, which could result in them falling and becoming a danger to the general public. Unless the tree is interfering with my right to light or encroaching into my property there are limited remedies available to help me in terms of rights, so the diplomatic approach is always best. There is no right to a view in Ireland unfortunately. One could see if the neighbour would cut back or cull the tree himself or allow you to cull or cut back the tree at your own cost to improve the view which could work out much less than going to court. There is a simple District Court application to sort out tree/ hedge boundary disputes in the District Court. Mediation would also be a route that you could take if one cannot get agreement
with the neighbour to save court costs. If you want your neighbour’s tree to be removed and the neighbour is agreeable to this, you can contact the forest service and apply for a felling licence. There are also situations where it is not necessary to apply for a licence. An easement is a right of way and it has been argued that homeowner’s have a right to light, which can be impeded by some trees. It has been established through case law that an individual only has a right to light which has existed for a period of longer than twenty years and it relates to the windows of a property rather than the garden. The interference with the right of light usually would have to be close to a building to block the light. Therefore, the landowner must be able to prove this before claiming that their right to light has been interfered with. Each case involving tree and hedge disputes is unique, so it is important to seek legal advice should such matters arise. LawQuip: Tree Riddle: I’m the part of a tree that is not in the sky or under the ground. I can move throughout the day and change shape. What am I? Its shadow.

Medical Matters
DIABETES DR DAVID BUCKLEY
If you have been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes (non-insulin dependant) here are some facts you need to know: 1. You will need to reduce all forms of sugary foods and drinks and follow a low-fat diet. Arrange to see a dietitian.
6. Try to exercise for thirty minutes a day, five days per week as this will help control your blood sugars.
2. You will need a long-term illness book which will enable you to get your diabetic medications free of charge. See www.hse.ie and search for ‘’long-term illness scheme’’.
7. You will need to see our practice nurse at least twice a year to monitor your diabetes. This will mean a fasting blood test, blood pressure check, foot examination, weight and a general discussion. Please bring all your tablets and a fresh urine sample to each visit.
3. You may have to start tablet medication such as metformin (‘’Glucophage’’). 4. You will need your eyes checked annually for retinal damage. Ask our practice nurse and please make sure you are registered with www.diabeticretinalscreen.ie or Free Phone Diabetic Retinal Screen at 1800 454 555 to arrange a free eye examination. 5. You will need to attend to your feet and make sure your nails are filed and never ignore sores, ulcers or cuts on your feet. If you develop a cut or ulcer, see your GP or nurse immediately. Make sure you have comfortable, well-fitting shoes. (You may need to book an appointment with the chiropodist to cut your toenails).
8. You should get an annual flu vaccine every winter. You may also need a pneumonia vaccine. 9. Driving: If you are on diabetes medication such as Diamicron or certain other glucose lowering tablets or if you are on insulin, you are advised not to drive if your blood sugar is under 5mmol/e. You may have to inform the National Driver Licence Service (NDLS) and your insurance company that you have diabetes (see Diabetes and Driving – www.rsa.ie

Dentures are the past, dental implants are the future. Say goodbye to dentures and adhesives FOREVER!

They are a permanent solution that with proper care will never need to be replaced. Implant Supported Bridges are attached to dental implants for a permanent new set of teeth that look and feel natural and are non removable. No more putting your dentures in a glass overnight. Instead you brush your teeth as you would with natural teeth, in fact some of our patients have commented ‘it feels like my own teeth grew back!’

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... Scoil Eoin embrace Creative Schools Initiative Kieran O Toole , Principal says “ We are very proud in Scoil Eoin to be one of the 150 schools in the country chosen from 400 applications to participate in the Creative Schools initiative. For the last six weeks almost ninty children in 5th class have been working together on our first creative school’s venture. My aim was to have this project child led from start to finish. I wanted the children’s voice and creativity to be
heard throughout. Ms. Foley’s class worked with Paul Murphy in a number of creative writing workshops. They created interesting characters and a riveting script. Mr. Kennedy’s class then began art workshops with Abe Boland and enjoyed the process of building a beautiful stage setting and props for the play. Mr. Brosnan’s class worked with “skatz” a very talented musician who added a mysterious
gripping ominous choir to the performance today. Lastly our Project Based Learning Class brought the script to life on stage today, the children had enjoyed drama workshops with Sharon Costello in previous weeks. Our creative associate Naomi Cahill was also in attendance. The learning was fun and enjoyed throughout the process by teachers and children alike. The ninty
children in fourth class begin their Creative School’ s adventure after the Easter Holidays. Scoil Eoin will continue to be part of the Creative Schools Initiate in 2020 and we look forward to further developing the Creative minds of the children in our care. “

Kingdom Memorials... Celebrating 10 Years In Tralee This week Kingdom Memorials, located in Supervalu Car Park opposite Gleasures Funeral Home, is celebrating 10 years in business in Tralee Co. Kerry. However, proprietor Alan Tracey is in the business much longer; 23 years in total. A native of Navan Co.Meath, Alan Tracey is a 7th generation stone sculptor
who began studying his craft full time at just 15 years old under his Grandfather, renowned stone sculptor Anthony Rennicks and also his father Philip Tracey. At 19 years old, Alan came to Kerry where he met his wife Ann and fell in love with both her and Kerry. After a number of years, travelling between the 2 counties Alan decided to move to Tralee and opened up Kingdom Memorials . Now Alan and Ann have the largest indoor showroom in Munster where they have a full range of headstones, granite plaques and grave accessories on show in Kerry. Since Alan opened the business it has gone from strength to strength primarily because the quality of work is the absolute highest as Alan is so passionate about what he does. Jason Clifford joined the company after a couple of years and his hard work, enthusiasm and dedication has also helped bring the business to where it is today . Kingdom Memorials offers it’s clients new headstones in both traditional and modern styles
including lawn style headstones. They also can create bespoke headstones, which will be designed very closely with their clients and Alan directly . Kingdom Memorials are direct importers Alan of their own range of stone so they have complete control of quality and appearance to ensure the highest standards are met for the clients. Another great service provided by Kingdom Memorials is the complete renovation and restoration of any headstone or Celtic cross back to its original condition. In conjunction with this, they can add additional inscriptions, put down concrete floors, change chippings etc. After
and Ann Tracey these works are completed, your memorial will look as it did first day. With the addition of Alan’s wife Ann to the company in recent months, the team at Kingdom Memorials are available 6 days a week to offer you advice on creating a beautiful, everlasting memorial for your loved one. Alan or Ann can be contacted on 087-9452732 or simply call in to their showroom .
The ‘Real’ reasons why to become a host family to an international student
Invite a French, Spanish, German, Italian into your home for a couple of weeks this Summer and you will get paid for it! Celtic School of English (part of Greenview Language Group) organise short stays for adult and teenage students coming to Tralee to learn English and enjoy Irish culture. They fit into your day to day family life, eat the same meals, do whatever you are doing – the most important thing is that they feel part of a family and experience

Irish culture in that way. You don’t need to entertain them all day – they have English classes in the morning and activities in the afternoon. But the extra money they earn is only part of the reason why families welcome the students into their home again and again .Anne from Greenview has compiled some of the most popular comments she regularly hears from her students after their stay in Tralee with their host families . ‘I love my family!’ ....‘‘I had a

Beauty
NEW HAIR, SAME ME! HELLO BEAUTIFUL PEOPLE! I HOPE YOU’RE HAVING AN AMAZING WEEK. THIS WEEK IS MY LAST IN AUSTRALIA, WHICH MEANS MY LAST WEEK AT MY AMAZING JOB IN VALONZ. I’VE HAD A BALL WORKING THERE AND I’VE LEARNED SO MUCH. As it’s my last week, I absolutely had to get my hair done by Nathen - who has been listening to my bang on about wanting to be blonder way too much! Since starting work at Valonz I have learned SO much about haircare and have been taking extra good care, using masks/wellaplex weekly, having frequent cuts and only using salon brand products including Wella, Christophe Robin & Evo. We decided to do a big transformation - SCALP BLEACH. I’ve never had scalp bleach before so I really didn’t know how my hair would react. But because I’ve been taking good care of my hair, it went so well! I also chopped off a lot of hair - I’ve been living for short hair recently. Such a vibe. My hair has been growing so so quickly recently so why not. Now that my hair is bleached I’ll definitely up keeping my hair care rountine - my go to products are… • Luxe Oil - Literally hair perfume, it smells amaaaazing. And really keeps my frizzy hair sleek and smooth.
• Wella System Professional Shampoo & Conditioner - The Hydrate and The Colour Save are my favourites. • Christophe Robin Masks - I’m not sure are they available in Ireland but oh wow they’re amazing (and they’re made from all natural products so you can leave them in overnight) • Wellaplex - Like Olaplex but made by Wella. It leaves my hair feeling a lot softer than Olaplex and I love it. Definitely one of the reasons my hair can handle all this bleach. Remember, a process like this takes time and knowledge. You can’t go from colour treated dark hair to blonde overnight without damage, and definitely not from home colour. I have been going lighter since January 2018. Also, if your ends are fried, cut them off please. Your hair looks better healthy! When I’m home in Tralee I’ll be trusting Patrick’s The Hair Company with my locks once again! I hope you have a great week!

FITNESS!
HELLO MY STRONG FRIENDS I hope you’re all having an amazing week!
One week until I go to Thailand and I’m SO excited to be going back to The Land of Smiles! I read something last week online, it was a post from a girl where she was anxious about going on holidays - wondering what to eat over there and how will she maintain her weight etc etc… It got me thinking a lot. I count myself very lucky that I have a healthy relationship both with food and my body because I constantly educate myself and can very clearly spot a fad diet or trend and know not to follow it. If you are going on holiday and are genuinely stressing about what to eat or what not to eat. Please. Just think… will one or two weeks where you don’t know exactly what you’ll be eating or how many calories etc etc really have that great an impact on your body? Because it doesn’t. You’re on HOLIDAY. Realistically your NEAT will be up a little and you’ll be drinking more water. Eat or drink what you want, but you can be mindful also. Have Lays and a beer, a fruit salad, BALANCE. Life is too short to worry and stress. I’m not a professional - obviously. So if it is genuinely affecting you I recommend seeing a professional nutritionist or dietician - not someone who sends out cookie cutter plans. (By the way, most of the photos you see on Instagram/Online are heavily edited) My main advice would be - If you would like to lose weight, figure out your calorific needs to lose weight. (The James Smith Academy free trial will do it for you) And vice versa if you want to gain or stay the same. But when you’re on your holidays… enjoy it. You’ll have plenty of time to count your calories when you’re back. Trust me. Remember - everybody is a bikini body.

All the Colours at KCFE! It was a colourful sight at Kerry College of Further Education in Clash this Thursday as the Further Education College students organised a very successful 5K Colour Fun Run which saw over €646 raised for the Irish Cancer Society. Basking in sunshine and splattered in colourful paint, the event was enjoyed by hundreds of participating students and staff. It was organised by a number of class groups as part of their modules in Teamworking and Event Management. This enabled students to put theory into practice by organising and co-ordinating the entire of this event from start to finish. The college would like to express thanks to all
the wonderful businesses who sponsored the event so generously. Sponsors included: Apache Pizza, The Aquadome, Dealz, Life Pharmacy, Omniplex, O’Sullivan’s Pharmacy, Quills, Spar, Tesco, Ballybeg Hair Salon, Saba Beauty, Shines Pharmacy Tralee, Petit Delice Killarney, Dungeon Bookstore, Lidl Killarney, Dunnes Stores, Horans Health Store, Siamsa Tire, O Sullivan Bikes, Killarney etc. KCFE also would like to acknowledge the support from the local Gardaí and Civil Defence. “This was a wonderful example of team work as students from a variety of courses – Art, Carpentry, Business, Sports, Pre-Garda and Music
- worked together to ensure the outcome was successful. Very few families are spared a diagnosis of cancer and with that in mind we are delighted
that the Irish Cancer Society will benefit from the good work of KCFE students” said Mary Lucey, Principal of the college.

LAUGHTER ....THE BEST MEDICINE ! A HUSBAND NOTICES HIS WIFE’S HEARING IS DETERIORATING AND DECIDES TO VISIT HER DOCTOR FOR ADVICE.
“I can’t speak to my wife directly as she might find it offensive, given our old age” he says to the doc. “There’s a simple trick you can try to determine her hearing” explains the doctor. “Simply ask her a question at a distance and if she doesn’t hear you, move slightly closer and ask again until she does”. That night, the husband arrives home and sees his wife in the kitchen cooking. He thinks to himself, “what a perfect opportunity to test her hearing”. He stands in the doorway of the kitchen and promptly asks; “What’s for dinner honey?” No answer. He moves closer. “What’s for dinner honey?” Still no answer. He moves even closer. “What’s for dinner honey?” Still his wife doesn’t answer. He now sees how serious her hearing problem is. At this point, he is stood right next to his wife. “What’s for dinner honey?” “FOR THE FOURTH BLOODY TIME.. WE’RE HAVING CHICKEN”!!!

THREE IDIOT DETECTIVES
Three idiots were training to become detectives. Their superior decided to test them by having them catch an escaped criminal. He showed the first idiot a picture of the criminal and asked, “How would you catch this man?”“That’s easy,” said the first idiot. “He’s only got one eye, so I would hunt down every one-eyed man.”“No, you idiot!” said the superior. “He only has one eye because this picture is a profile view!” Annoyed, the superior threw the first idiot out of his office. T he second idiot was shown the same picture. “How would you catch this man?” asked the S uperior.“That’s easy,” said the second idiot. “He’s only got one ear, so I would hunt down every one-eared man.”The superior groaned. “No, you idiot! He only has one ear because this picture is a profile view!” Furious, he threw the second idiot out of his O Ffice. Exhausted, the superior called in the third idiot and showed him the picture. “How would you catch this man?” he asked. The third idiot thought for a moment, then said, “Well, I would check the footage of every shop in the area that sells Contact lenses. He would have to be in one of them.
coffee morning
”Skeptically, the superior did what the third idiot said. To his astonishment, he criminal was indeed in a shop that sold contact lenses! After the criminal was returned to jail, the superior sat the third idiot down and asked, impressed, “How did you do it?”“That’s easy,” said the third idiot. “He can’t wear glasses because he only has One eye and one ear.”

TORQUING CARS! THE GRAND TOUR BIDS AN EMOTIONAL FAREWELL TO ‘THE TENT’
After nearly two decades, Clarkson, Hammond, and May are leaving the studio for good. Jeremy Clarkson broke down in tears as he and co-hosts Richard Hammond and James May brought 16 years of studio presenting together to an end in the Season Three finale of The Grand Tour. The trio will leave their famous tent for the fourth season of the Amazon Prime show to instead focus on producing a run of road trip ‘specials’.The final episode focused on the impending end of production for the Ford Mondeo, and following the end of a film at Lincoln Cathedral, the pair reminisced about their near-two decade career together. It’s very sad, and it’s not the only British motoring institution that’s coming to an end. We are,” Clarkson said, breaking down – Clarkson’s daughters, who were in the audience were also shown in tears. “This is not just the last in the series, the show as you know it is actually ending – with the track, audience, us three, and really badly-fitting jackets every week. This is the last one.” Well we do have some good news, we’re not stopping,” he added, responding to a plea from an audience member to not stop. “We’ll stick around. The thing is, the show as you know it is ending, and that’s very upsetting for us.” Hammond added that they couldn’t stop making the show because they’d “have to get jobs”. The truth is Amazon loves us, we love Amazon so we’ll carry on a bit,” said May. The upcoming fourth season of the show was confirmed late last year amid rumours of the show’s demise. The fourth season will comprise of road trip special episodes, such as the Colombia and Mongolia films featured in Season Three. “There is still so much of the world we haven’t been to,” said Hammond. Which Clarkson responded with: “So many people I haven’t insulted!”
LONDON ULEZ: THE ULTRA LOW EMISSIONS ZONE EXPLAINED
The London Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) is now active, impacting an estimated 2.5 million vehicles that drive in the capital each year. Owners of affected cars have to pay a daily charge to drive into the zone, which, unlike the Congestion Charge Zone, operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The ULEZ has been introduced in London to cut emissions of nitrous oxides and particulates in the city with the aim of improving air quality. The Ultra Low Emissions Zone is an area of London where the most polluting vehicles must pay a levy in order to use the roads. The ULEZ charge replaces the existing T-Charge. While the ULEZ initially covers the same area as the Congestion Charge Zone in central London, from 26 October 2021 it will expand to cover all areas inside the North and South Circular roads. The charge, which must be paid on top of the £11.50 daily Congestion Charge, is set at a standard rate of £12.50 – although this varies depending on the vehicle – and is in effect 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The ULEZ charge and the Congestion Charge in combination bring the total cost for some vehicles entering London between 7am and 6pm on weekdays up to £24. Which vehicles are affected by the ULEZ? Generally speaking, the ULEZ affects pre-Euro 6 diesels – those built before around 2016 – and pre-Euro 4 petrols built prior to 2006. Some petrol models that meet the Euro 4 standards were available from 2001 onwards, however.
CAR ADVICE WITH HONEST JOHN – YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED ARE THERE ANY CARS WITH FOLD FLAT SEATS THAT CAN BE USED AS A CAMPER? I’m looking for an older used car that can be used as a camper sometimes. It will need back seats that fold down completely flat for a double or small double mattress. Ideally, something that costs max £1500 and is relatively cheap to run. Does it exist? ... Jennifer HJ says A van-based people carrier like a Citroen Berlingo might be a good option or something like a Toyota Corolla Verso. You might find space between the rear wheel arches to be limited, however. A tent might be a better option - a car will be just as cold at night! WHICH IS BETTER - A COUPE OR A SOFT TOP MX5? Is the Mazda MX5 Mk3 soft top as vulnerable to rust on the rear arches as the Mk2? I’m trying to choose between the coupe and the soft top Mk3 MX5. Are there issues with the power operated coupe hoods which I should be aware of? ...Michael HJ says ... The Mk3 does seem to have been better rust-proofed than the Mk2, but these are now 14 years old so you’ll need to check each example individually. It’s not just the rear arches that rot either - bonnets can rot because of stone chips, you’ll also want to check for poorly repaired accident damage, and keep an eye on panels where the rubber seals have failed. The power-operated hoods can suffer from blocked drains (check for condensation) and can also get out of alignment. There is the odd horror story, so you’ll want to make sure the roofs been well looked after - bolts kept tightened, joints lubricated etc. Again, thoroughly test the model that you’re working on, listening for any clonks, rattles and unexpected noises. 34

FAI NATIONAl P.R.O. OF THE YEAR ENJOY THE READ WITH YOUR EASTER EGG: WILL THE YELLOW STAY IN KERRY? The four day Kerry Group Ras Mumhan hits the roads on Good Friday and continues until Easter Monday by which time the riders will have covered over 500km in pursuit of the coveted Yellow jersey and the Donal McKenna Cup. 155 riders have entered the Ras Mumhan in 31 teams from all over the country, the UK and from Holland. (This is another great example of sports tourism that we do not celebrate enough in the county). There is a prize fund of over e7000 on offer to the riders who are classed as u23, A1, A2 and A3. Tralee Cycling fans will be out on the four stages to cheer on the Manor West team that is led by Cathal Moynihan who was first and second on stages in recent races. The team is a strong one with Cian Smailes, John James Griffin, Ciaran Slattery and Bobby Coleman making up the team who will be looking for stage and possible overall jersey honours. Killarney’s Conor Kissane will ride with the Ireland Development Team which is a great honour for him and he has been in great form in early season races and could challenge for honours over the 4 days. Another Killarney rider Richard Meas rides with the Velo Revolution team. Velo are the jersey sponsors for the Ras this season. From the counties point of view other teams entered are the Killarney CC, Killorglin CC and SliAbh Luachra CC. The Kerry Group Ras Mumhan gets underway on Friday afternoon with the 100km spin around East Kerry. On Saturday the stage starts in Listowel and crosses the Limerick border to finish in Athea. Sunday is the famous South Kerry stage starting and finishing in Waterville and includes the Category 1 Coom an Easpaig climb just outside Portmagee. The final days sees the riders leave Killorglin at 10am for three circuits around Beaufort and Killorglin before 11 laps of the shorter Donal McKenna Circuit where for the last few years the Ras is finally decided.

A GOLDEN DAY FOR BALLYMACELLIGOTT HANDBALL STAR: Ballymacelligott teenager Daire Keane is fast becoming the latest Kerry sporting icon. The Tralee C.B.S. Leaving Certificate student enhanced his sporting CV with a sensational victory in the All Ireland 40x20 Junior B Singles handball final in Kingscourt, Co. Cavan recently. He defeated the highly fancied Ciaran Crotters from Antrim 21-12 and 21-14 in the final to claim his first National G.A.A. title and a place on the list of alltime great Ballymacelligott players. “I am thrilled with the success. It was a difficult and very tactical final. In the first game we were tied on a number of occasions. However I remained calm and when we were 10-10 I killed some shots to steal the game,” said Daire who was speaking to Kerry Handball PRO Con Dennehy. “In the second game I trailed 8-2 but fought back thanks to the vocal Kerry support in Cavan to take the title. I am very proud to bring this All Ireland medal back to Ballymacelligott and the wonderful people who have encouraged me in the sport.” Earlier in the month he beat off the challenge of Darren Carter (Westmeath) in the All Ireland Junior B 40x20 singles semi-final played in Ballymacelligott. Keane already has a major National title under his belt when he won the All Ireland Schools individual title in December. He will be hoping to add more Kerry, Munster and All Ireland titles to his already impressive sporting CV. EASTER AT THE TRACK:
On Friday night at the Kingdom Greyhound Stadium there are the first rounds of the Lee Strand 550 yards. On Saturday night there are the second round heats of the Kingdom Stadium Novice 325 yards and the semi-finals of the KGOBA/Barking Buzz App A6 525 yards plus all the live action from Limerick. Entries are being taken for a Novice 750 starting on May 26th. Friday 19th April 2019
PAUL’S CLEAN SHEETS HELPS CLUB TO PROMOTION: With all the negativity around the FAI at the moment there are still plenty of good news stories on the field. And one of these is the promotion of Kettering Town to the Football League. The local connection is ex Tralee Dynamos and Kerry player Paul White who has had another very impressive season between the posts. They won 1-0 at the weekend to secure promotion with three games to spare and it was Paul’s 19th clean sheet of the season. Paul is also involved in coaching at the clubs renowned Academy and is also branching out into a business career connected with the game.
LEAGUE OF IRELAND CORNER: It was a disappointing week on the League of Ireland front except for the u13’s. Cork City did a job on the 17’s and 19’s. The 17’s lost 5-0 at home but the score line does tell the story of the game. Kerry had chances when 1-0 down to equalise but didn’t take them and credit to Cork they took every opportunity they created. They had lost the week before and knew that if they went down to Kerry they would be6 points behind the Kingdom boys. Cork City had two Kerry players on show who both had good games – Sean McGrath and Soni Rramani. The Kerry 19’s showed some more improvement as they went down away to Cork City 3-0. This team are only a few games into their debut season and are working hard to get to the level of the other teams in the League. The Kerry 13’s and 15’s played at Mounthawk Park on Saturday in the height of the stormy conditions. The 15’s were only 1-0 down to Galway against the wind at the break but credit to the opposition they did better against the wind than the home side. The 13’s were coming off the back of two losses and went 1-0 down early on as they also played against the wind. But credit to this young side they battled hard till the break and then in the second half goals from Jack Slattery and Oisin Healy saw them lead 2-1 until the last kick of the game when Galway equalised. However this was a very good point for Kerry to add to their first round win. All four League of Ireland sides have time off over Easter from games but will still train and also hopefully this will give players with knocks the chance to recover. Away for the League
of Ireland but staying with soccer there was great news for the Kerry u12’s as they won the Munster Plate and have qualified for the All Ireland semi-finals. They did it the hard way going all the way to penalties – their second win in three games from the spot. They are away to Longford on the weekend of May 4th. MOSSIE GOES ALL THE WAY TO THE END: Under Motorsport Ireland rules a driver under the age of 17 can compete in forestry rallies once they are accompanied by an experienced codriver who also takes over on any road sections. Last weekend at the Moonraker Rally in Ballyvourney 15 year old Mossie Costello became the youngest Kerry driver to compete in a rally. He got all the way to the finish which was a great success on his first time out. Other rallying news saw a win in Italy for Killarney’s Paul Nagle who was on the notes for Craig Breen in the Skoda Fabia. The duo is expected in Killarney for the Rally of the Lakes in May where a bumper entry is expected for the 40th anniversary of the Rally. Locally it was great to see the Kerry Motor Club having an evening to celebrate the success of their Rose Hotel Circuit of Kerry Rally. Too often we don’t get together after an event to thank all those who put many months and hours into making it a success. MORE HONOURS FOR THE WARRIORS: Members of the Tralee Warriors have again been recognised for their wonderful season winning the SuperLeague. Now Paul Dick has been named on the Men’s SiperLeague All Star’s Team One with Eoin Quigley on Team Two and Kieran Donaghy on Team Three. DUKE DESERVES HIS NATIONAL AWARD: While not specifically a Tralee story but Donal ‘Duke’ O’Connor is well known in basketball circles in the town for his running of the annual Castleisland Basketball Christmas Blitz. He has been involved for the 49 years of this great competition which has grown to a huge 5 extravaganza. And this week everyone in basketball was delighted to see him getting the Presidents Life time Achievement Award. ATHLETES AWARDED: There was a great turnout for the Kerry Athletics Awards Night which was held in Kenmare this year. Among those from a Tralee point of view who received Club Awards were Lily Nowak and

Solange Diogo (Tralee Harriers) and Ursula Barrett (St Brendan’s) were honoured in the Senior and Master Women’s categories. Schools and cross country athletes were also presented with trophies on the night. COMMUNITY GAMES NEWS: The action is coming thick and fast in the Community Games world. The Marathons were held in Currow with Oisin Murray from Blennerville / Ballyard taking the Boys title. The Tag Rugby was held at IT Tralee and in the under 11’s Spa/Fenit/ Barrow took second place in Group 1. They qualified for the Bronze medal game but lost out narrowly to Listowel by 11 tries to 10. In the under 14 competition Spa/ Fenit/ Barrow qualified for the final with victories over Listowel and Beaufort. In Group 2 Ardfert / Kilmoyley came out on top. The final was a cracking contest with Spa Fenit/Barrow winning the County title by 9 tries to 4 over Ardfert/Kilmoyley who took the silver medals. This weekend Tralee is the centre of attention with the first of the Munster finals. Badminton, Chess, Draughts, Indoor soccer, mini-rugby and Table Tennis will take place in the IT Tralee, the Sports Complex, Cumann Ioseph and Scoil Eoin, Balloonagh. VITAL WEEKEND IN THE CLUB FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIPS: Before we look at the individual club notes here is a quick look at the tables in the various Club Championships and who the Tralee sides are facing this week. In the County Senior Group Phase Austin Stacks lead Group 1while Kerins O’Rahilly’s are third in Group 2. Kerins O’Rahillys are at home to Dr Crokes onm Saturday at 6.30 while Stacks are away to Kenmare on Sunday at 2.30pm. In the Intermediate Club Championship John Mitchels have finished second in Group 4 while in the Premier Junior Club Championship Na Gaeil top Group 1 from Ballymac. St Pats are second in Group 4. Ballymac will welcome Na Gaeil in what should be a cracker on Saturday with a 6.30 throw-in. St Pats are away to Group leaders St Senans who are a point ahead of the Tralee side. KERRY MINORS REACH ALL IRELAND C DECIDER: Kerry travelled to Gort on Saturday to face Mayo in the Semi-Final of All-Ireland Minor C Camogie Championship. Clodagh Begley started instead of Debra Canty and Kate Kearney started for injured Ellen Donoghue. In the 7th
minute Amy O’Sullivan opened the scoring from a free. Mayo had wind advantage and scored points in the 17th, 19th & 23rd minutes and raised both green and white flags in the 27th to leave the halftime score at 1-4 to 0-1. Amy O’Sullivan found the net in the 38th minute and Caoimhe Spillane followed with a point in the 40th. In the 45th minute Amy O’Sullivan continued the comeback with a free and in the 47th it was the turn of Sarah Lawlor to find the Mayo net. A free from Amy O’Sullivan in the 52nd, a Mayo point from play in the 55th and two points from Amy O’Sullivan in the 56th and 57th, one from a free and one from play, left the final score at Kerry 2-6 Mayo 1-5. Kerry now advances to play Tyrone in the All-Ireland Minor ‘C’ Camogie Championship Final. ST PAT’S NEWS: There was no winner of the Lotto from the numbers drawn 17,19, 20 and 25 and the next jackpot will be e5,500 with the draw in Skelper Quanes Bar this Sunday night.
