The Life and Legacy of Vicky Phelan celebrated at poignant event in Tralee
Over last weekend, Recovery Haven Kerry, a local cancer support charity, hosted the Kerry stage of the nationwide Vicky Phelan Campaign and Portrait Tour in Tralee. The two-day awareness-raising initiative was held in collaboration with portrait owner David Brennan and friends and family of the late cervical cancer campaigner, and supported by MTU Kerry and Tralee Chamber Alliance. The Sólás Centre at MTU’s North Campus was the venue for the weekend’s activities, which began on Friday night with the unveiling of the portrait by owner and lifelong friend of Vicky, David Brennan. In front of over 100 invited guests, including Vicky’s friends and parents, David gave an empowering insight into every aspect of the portrait, detailing the symbolism of
each section. John Wall, another of Vicky’s friends, also spoke about “Vicky the person” and offered an insight into the kind of woman Vicky Phelan was, away from her media persona. Deirdre Walsh of Radio Kerry moderated a panel discussion with prominent cancer awareness advocates, including 221+ campaigners Lyn Fenton and Caoimhe O’Neill Forde, and 18-yearold Roísín Ní Chadhla, a BT Young Scientist and Student Public Health Researcher. Recovery Haven Kerry Chairperson Tim McSwiney and Dr Brendan O’Donnell, MTU Registrar, both spoke eloquently on behalf of their organizations in welcoming the tour to Kerry. On Saturday morning, the portrait was on public display at the Sólás Centre, and David Brennan explained its origins and meaning
behind it. Over 60 people attended the event, including the previous night’s speakers and Vicky’s parents. Recovery Haven Kerry Manager Gemma Fort expressed gratitude for the co-operation of MTU Kerry, the Department of Nursing

Kerry’s efforts not enough to tackle Treaty Utd
On Friday evening, Kerry FC faced Treaty United for the second time this season in a double Munster derby game week for the April bank holiday weekend. Kerry had previously picked up their first point of the season against Treaty in their first meeting. This time, Kerry hoped to start the long weekend in high spirits by doing one better and getting their first win. However,
FC
the game did not go as planned for Kerry.
Treaty dominated the first half and scored their first goal just ten minutes into the game. Despite Kerry’s persistence, they could not find the back of the net and even missed a penalty. Treaty took advantage of their luck and scored two more goals before the end of the first half.
In the second half, Kerry started fast and had a few chances but could not convert them into goals. Treaty added another goal through a controversial corner kick, which Kerry felt should have been stopped due to an injury to one of their players. The game ended with Treaty winning 4-0. Despite Kerry’s disappointment, they will look to bounce back in their
next game against Cobh. Kerry FC boss Billy Dennehy had talked about the challenge of playing two games in three days but insisted that the focus was entirely directed towards the game versus Treaty. The team was confident but still wary of the threat ahead, given their recent performances.

NORA FROM NURTURED COACHING CLARIFYS SOME OF THE MYTHS SURROUNDING PEOPLES EATING HABITS TODAY...
Nora , is it normal to have 'bad' or 'unwanted' eating habits?
When it came to my personal food choices, I had an all-or-nothing mentality that set me up for failure every time. I genuinely thought it was totally down to my lack of willpower. It was totally my fault that I had binged again today because I didn’t follow my food rules. The impossible standards that I had set myself. I did not offer myself any compassion. I couldn’t understand how all of a sudden this 35-year-old woman had a huge eating challenge…
I thought if I applied these nutritional rules this would ‘cure me’...
From undertaking my personal journey towards recovery I now know that applying nutritional rules didn’t cure me. I discovered that this eating challenge stemmed from my thoughts, feelings and beliefs. I gave too much credence to the voice of my inner critic, not my inner champion.
To address unwanted eating habits such as binge eating or emotional eating, we need to understand and ultimately transform our psychology. A common way we stay stuck in our eating challenges is by self-attacking ourselves that we have these challenges in the first place. This negative self-talk can be truly endless.
If you find yourself saying things like “Why can’t I just get over this already?” or “I know what to do, I just don’t do it,” it’s time to bring loving attention to these thoughts. Look for where you can begin to make small shifts in your internal self-talk. Where can you acknowledge your efforts and your progress, no matter how small?
Recognising the shifts you’re making helps solidify those positive changes over time. No matter what your brain may try to convince you of, remember you’re a unique and wonderful human. You’re not broken, there’s nothing to fix.Keep reminding yourself of this … all these small steps can take you forward. We ultimately choose what voice to listen to… those voices inform our choices.....

JOHN MITCHELS CLUB NOTES
John Mitchels faced Ballydonoghue
away in a Senior Men’s game. Ballydonoghue had the scoreboard ticking over early on, but Mitchels fought back with fabulous points from play by Cian Holden and James Duggan. The defense was strong, but Ballydonoghue took the lead with a free. Both teams received a yellow card in the first half. Mitchels were outscored in the second half, but put up a great battle, scoring again in the 20th minute with another excellent score from Duggan. However, they ran out of time and suffered a loss with a final score of 0-11 to 1-12. The Senior Men Development League will see them facing Kenmare on May 6th at 7 pm.
In the Senior Ladies Donal Curtin Cup Round 3, John Mitchells played against Abbeydorney, but the home side started strong, scoring a couple of early goals and points. However, John Mitchells steadily reduced the lead with points from Lily Parker and Aoife O’Brien. The defense, including Emma Lynch, Emma Carmody, and Julie Foley, relieved the pressure. John Mitchells played with the wind in the second half and made some changes, resulting in them reducing the lead even further with points from Ava Buckley and Diana O’Keeffe. Despite their efforts, Abbeydorney won the match. John Mitchells will now move on to Round 4 and play Southern Gaels in a fortnight’s time. The under-6 and under-7 boys and girls team had a break from training for the long weekend. The under-8 and under-10 girls also had a well-deserved break, with training resuming on May 7th. The U12 girls won their first home game of the season against Dingle in the North Kerry League, with all 19 players putting in a huge effort. Training for U12 girls continues in preparation for their next match against Beale next Tuesday night. U14 girls played a challenge match against the Green team to keep them up to speed before their next game against Inbhear Sceine Gaels on Monday night. Finally, the U11 boys played a game away to Laune Rangers, played in great spirit by both sides.
ST PATS GAA CLUB UPDATE:
The Dingle Way Challenge is set to take place on June 4th, offering both experienced walkers and those looking for a scenic day out a choice of routes. The Ultra-Route begins at Brandon Creek, on the West side of Cnoc Bhréanainn, traverses Mt Brandon, Fothair na Manach, Arraglen towards Teer Cross, and finishes at Fitzgerald’s Bar in Camp. The Darkness into Light walk will be
held on May 6th at Curraheen Lar at 5 am, with all proceeds going to Pieta House. Registration for the St. Pats GAA Cúl Camp is now open, and early booking is recommended. The camp will run from July 10th to July 14th. The young players of St. Pats GAA have been busy, with a focus on skill development and teamwork. The under 5s worked on agility, balance, and coordination, while the U7s had fun while working on their skills. The U8 girls had a fast and fun session, with newly joined Gaelic4Girls players adding to the team’s performance. Finally, the U9s had a great week, with a trip to An Gaeltacht to play their first Go Game of the year.
KERRY FC LEAGUE OF IRELAND ACADEMY
Kerry had three soccer teams playing over the weekend. The Under 17 team had the best result, beating Treaty United 2-0, with Luke Palmer scoring both goals in the first half. The Under 14 team traveled to Dublin to play against Shamrock Rovers, but because they are in the youngest league, results are not recorded. The best players for Kerry in that match were Callum Robertson, Odhran Foley, and Ciaran Murphy. The Under 19 team traveled to Waterford and, although they were 2-1 down at halftime, they were still in the game until one of their players was sent off. The home team ended up winning 5-1, with Oisin Breen scoring for Kerry. Upcoming fixtures include the Under 17 team playing away against Limerick FC on Saturday, the Under 19 team hosting Shelbourne at 2pm on Sunday, and the 15 team traveling to UL to take on Treaty United.
TRALEE PARNELLS
CLUB UPDATES:
U12 Camogie: Tralee Parnells had a great start to the County league for their under 12 camogie team, winning a tight game against Killarney on Monday evening. Although the girls started well, Killarney put up a good fight, and it took some last-ditch defending to secure the win. The team trains on Fridays in Caherslee from 6 to 7 pm, and new players are always
welcome to come and try camogie.
U16 Camogie: Tralee Parnells had a great start to the league last Thursday evening with a win against Causeway. It was a fantastic team performance with every player playing their part, including the younger members who joined the squad this season. The team’s next game is against Cillard in Caherslee on Thursday 4th May, and supporters are encouraged to come along.
U15 Kerry Development Squad: Tralee Parnells players Caoilinn Culloo, Jessica Leen, Georgia Kennedy, Anna O Sullivan, and Anna Chute played in the recent Munster Development Blitz in UL for the Kerry U15s. They lost to a strong Tipperary team in the first game but came back to beat Limerick in their second game.
Kerry Minors: Congratulations to the Kerry Minor camogie team on reaching the All Ireland Minor C Final after defeating Wicklow in Moneygall last Sunday. Senior Hurling: Tralee Parnells drew with Kilgarvan, 1-14 to 0-17, in Round 2 of Div 2 Co League last Wednesday. Tralee Parnells is still unbeaten after two rounds and is set to face Kenmare at home next Wednesday evening at 7 pm.
