A CHAT ON THE STREET WITH... Chris and Kevin

Tralee Advertiser recently caught up with Kevin Prunty from KP Therapy , located in the Brandon Hotel Leisure Centre. IT’S A PAIN IN MY… Hi Kevin, tell us a little about yourself and KP Therapy. Thanks Chris, I’m a Monaghan man, and dad to two Kerrymen! I operate KP Therapy alongside Kieran Slattery NMT from Killarney and we’re based in the Brandon Hotel and Conference Centre in Tralee. What brought you here? That is usually the first question I ask my Customers :-) They usually say; I’ve a pain in my side, a change in sensation in my head, an itch in my throat, a heaviness when breathing, a throbbing in my temple, a tingling in the fingers, a numbness in my foot, a heat in my leg, a cold in my eye, or a tension in their jaw. If it’s an injury, it’s usually ‘I hurt my lower back at work, squatting

Kevin Prunty from KP Therapy or deadlifting or I hurt my knee running or I jarred my finger or I wrenched my shoulder or I pulled my back, or I strained my neck working out or twisted my ankle or knee. So it’s varied but that’s what we deal with. That’s a broad range of complaints, what did you study in college? I’ve been teaching Neuromuscular Therapy for 15 years and it’s allowed me to travel and meet some amazing therapists and educators in other countries. I’m an NMT. I qualified in Ireland in 2005 and went on to earn a Masters degree in NMT in University of Chester. So I treat pain, injury, changes in sensation but enjoy massage, Pilates, breathwork so the work has a lot of variation. With summer upon us have you noticed an increase in footfall? Yes well, the tour season just started a few weeks ago and the Brandon is very busy with international guests. We’re

seeing a good few coming for the typical relaxation massages, deep tissue, back neck and shoulders, full body, pregnancy massage but most have complaints of one type or another and there are NMTs all over Ireland and lots of very good NMTs in America that I can refer them back to if they need more treatment. Is it all massage based? No but our foundation and specialist skillset is the precise and thorough hands on treatment of the soft tissues. Myself and Kieran are both Health fitness instructors so we do as much movement in the course of rehabilitation. Is it just yourself and Kieran? At the moment yes but we’ll be looking again soon for more NMTs to join us. There are some things that you can’t teach and those qualities are as important as having a good technical therapist. I’ve had a hand in training almost 3000 NMTs nationwide across the National Qualification and 4 year NMT

programs in National training centre so I’d love to hear from Graduates in the area. Where do you see the clinic in 5 years? Busy, we’ve really hit the ground running due to the support of Stephen Quinn, general Manager in the Brandon, all the staff and the Byrne family support. They’ve been great from day one so I see us in the Brandon Hotel, with the 7 treatment rooms and studio in operation and working closely with the highly qualified gym staff downstairs, who are all exercise for health specialists and are working with us to help keep people on the right path Post treatment.

THE TEAM AT THE CLINIC ARE HERE TO ANSWER YOUR QUESTIONS ON COSMETIC AND HAIR RESTORATION ISSUES. I heard you on the radio recently talking about the ultimate facial. What was the name of it and who is it for? Lillian.

This award-winning treatment is the latest in non-invasive treatments for smoother, clearer and younger looking skin. It is a complete facial rejuvenation therapy which combines the power of three unique treatments over one 1.5 hour session. All our skin types and concerns are different and so the number of sessions required will depend on the individual. The FDA approved treatment works on fine lines and wrinkles and it also has amazing results on age spots and uneven skin texture. The first step of Tribella is IPL, which will work on pigmentation, redness or both. The result is glowing, younger-looking skin. Second step is skin tightening with amazing results on skin laxity and diminishes the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. The final step of Tribella is skin resurfacing, which naturally boosts collagen and elastin production for total skin renewal. Allow the next day for downtime as the skin must be kept completely dry for 24 hours; no water or makeup or creams on the skin. Early in the week is great for this treatment if you have weekend plans. Book a Tribella for your first step to great skin.

Hi Lillian, it is called Tribella and is for anyone concerned with skin ageing. It is one of Harley Street’s most popular treatments and is now available in Tralee at the CHRC, Bon Secours Hospital.

Nora

• Baking potatoes, cut into chips • Low-calorie cooking spray • 8 large eggs • 3 tsp dried oregano • 6 tbsp passata • ½ red onion, thinly sliced • 50g button mushrooms, thinly sliced • 1 green pepper, deseeded and sliced • 8 pitted black olives in brine, sliced • 75g reduced-fat mozzarella, torn • 4 little gem lettuces, roughly chopped

Method Preheat your oven to 200°C/fan 180°C/gas 6. Boil the chips for 3-4 minutes, then drain well. Spray with low-calorie cooking spray, toss lightly, then spread in a single layer on a baking tray. Season lightly and bake for 20-25 minutes, turning halfway through, until crisp and golden. Meanwhile, beat the eggs with 2 tsp oregano and some seasoning. Spray a large ovenproof non-stick frying pan with low-calorie cooking spray and place over a low heat. Add the eggs and cook for 4-5 minutes, or until almost set. When the chips are nearly done, preheat your grill to high, then grill the frittata until set and golden. Remove from the grill and spread over the passata, scatter over the veg and olives and top with the mozzarella and remaining oregano. Pop back under the grill until bubbling. Twist over some black pepper, slice into 4 and serve with the chips and lettuce

The Minister of State with responsibility for Land Use and Biodiversity, Senator Pippa Hackett has launched the Kerry EcoSocial Farming European Innovation Partnership (EIP) in Co. Kerry . The Kerry Eco-Social Farming project was successful under Call 5 of the EIP-AGRI projects which seeks to build links between the promotion of biodiversity and farmers, local communities and the wider public. key elements to increase biodiversity across our rural landscape and within our communities; namely creation, engagement, and monitoring. By integrating these key elements, this project will ensure active engagement with farmers and the wider community. This ultimately will facilitate the continued and enhanced delivery of the ecosystem services we all rely on for healthy lives, including clean water, carbon storage and biodiversity.” Speaking at the launch, Minister Hackett expressed her support for the Initiative which has both farmers and biodiversity at its core. She said, “I am delighted to be

Billy simplifies and explains Todays Technology

What is Ransomware? & How to prevent it!

Ransomware is a sort of software also known as malware that prevents users from accessing their systems, devices, or files until a ransom is paid. This is accomplished via ransomware encrypting files on the endpoint, threatening to delete files, or limiting system access. It can potentially ruin a business. Also for the home user, it can lock valuable pictures that can never be restored. 90% of infections are by receiving a email that seems legitimate and you click on a link or an attachment. For business to prevent this, is to use office 365 Exchange or google G-suite that have a good system of filtering the emails and are more secure. Another way of getting infected is if you are using Remote desktop to connect to your company without a VPN firewall. Backing up crucial data is the single most successful technique of recovering from a ransomware infestation,. However, there are a few factors to consider. Your backup files should be well-protected and stored offline or out-of-band so that hackers can't access them. Many cloud providers keep prior copies of files, allowing you to roll back to an unencrypted version in the event of a ransomware infestation. Be careful to test backups for effectiveness on a regular basis. Before rolling back in the event of an attack, be sure your backups aren't contaminated. Dropbox and OneDrive can also be infected Through the OneDrive sync client for the home user. I would recommend using a USB memory stick to backup your data but don’t leave it connected. Use a firewall and trusted antivirus software. Updating your security software and maintaining a good firewall are essential. Because of all the fraudulent software out there, it's critical to utilize antivirus software from a reliable company . The ransom should never be paid. It just serves to encourage and fund these criminals. Even if you pay the ransom, there is no guarantee that you will be able to access your files again. If you have put these measures in place and you get infected, you will be able restore from a backup. Because the majority of effective cloud backup services will have multiple copies of your data, so the loss is only 24 hours work not completely everything ! Please contact me if you need any advice I will be happy to help.

The Texaco Children’s Art Competition is popularly regarded as the longestrunning sponsorship in the history of arts sponsoring in Ireland, with an unbroken history that dates back to the very first Competition held in 1955. This year, as has been the case throughout its life, it has been a platform on which young artists from Kerry and counties throughout Ireland have had their talents recognised and their creativity commended. From 31st May to 30th June, Belfast’s Royal Ulster Academy of Arts is hosting an exhibition of the top 126 winning paintings in this year’s Competition. Admission is free and the Academy is open on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 9am-5pm.

First ever Gradutes from a Kerry University... MTU! The ‘Class of 2021’ celebrated their graduation awards at the Munster Technological University’s Conferring of Awards Celebration Ceremonies at the Kerry Campus last Friday 20th May. These ceremonies were due to take place in Autumn 2021, but could not take place in person due to COVID 19 restrictions at the time. This year’s graduating classes include students from the School of Business, Computing and Humanities, the School of Science, Technology, Engineering and

Mathematics, and the School of Health and Social Sciences and represent direct CAO applicants, mature students, international students, and those completing studies on a part-time basis. The total number of students celebrating receiving their parchments today is 790 ranging from Higher Certificates at Level 6 to Masters Degrees at Level 9. Testament to the multicultural diversity at MTU, this figure also includes 102 International students who hail from China, Malaysia, Sri Lanka India, Canada, Nigeria, Zimbabwe

and Ghana, among other countries. Addressing the graduates, President of MTU, Professor Maggie Cusack, commended their resilience and adaptability in completing their studies during a global pandemic. Professor Cusack added “We are immensely proud of each and every one of our graduates. Completing third level studies is a major personal achievement and today we would also like to thank the healthcare graduates who were in the frontline of the pandemic. We are delighted we can all share

this ceremony together and celebrate the achievements of the first ever graduates from a Kerry university.” During the ceremonies graduates were treated to a commencement speech from Dr Karen Weekes who recently became the first Irish woman to row solo across the Atlantic Ocean. A lecturer in the Health and Leisure Department at MTU, Karen spoke to students about resilience, pushing boundaries and empowered graduates to follow their dreams. Photos by Domnick Walsh

World Rally Championship star Paul Nagle will auction a very special piece of WRC memorabilia for two local organisations this weekend. The Aghadoe man has come up with a once-off idea that will raise funds for both Recovery Haven in Tralee and Fossa GAA club in Killarney. After a ceremonial start on The Mall in Tralee at 9am, the drivers will head west and visit some of the most -historical motorsport locations in the

county. Drivers confirmed include WRC star Kris Meeke, multiple Belgian rally champion Patrick Snijers and 1974 Circuit of Ireland Rally winner Cahal Curley. The event is part of Kerry Motor Club’s year-long 50th anniversary celebration. As well as the road event, a gala dinner will take place in The Rose Hotel in Tralee on Saturday night. Several items of interest to motorsport fans are up for grabs in an auction that will run alongside the gala dinner. Nagle , the Aghadoe man got several of the sports heroes to sign one of his world-standard

helmets and this helmet will be the main auction item on Saturday night. Signatories include multiple World Champions like Sebastien Loeb, Sebastien Ogier and Carlos Sainz. Irish world championship heroes Meeke and Breen have also put their names to the helmet. In total over 20 current or former World Championship drivers have signed the helmet.“I already have a very good offer on the helmet of €15,000 which will go to Recovery Haven Kerry,” he said. “Anything more and I would like to give to Fossa GAA club. Two wins for Recovery Haven Kerry at Volunteer Ireland national awards Volunteers at cancer support charity, Recovery Haven Kerry, have claimed two prestigious awards at this year’s Volunteer Ireland National Awards ceremony. The charity’s entire volunteer team - including gardeners, listeners, fundraisers, therapists and board members - took home the top prize in the Outstanding Large Group category, while Tralee’s Noreen O’Flaherty claimed the top award in the Health and Wellbeing category. The Volunteer Ireland Awards, which took place

at the Radisson Blue Hotel in Athlone on Friday night, are a major annual initiative to celebrate volunteers in Ireland. The awards shine a light on the remarkable achievements of volunteers around the country by honouring them at a national level. Recovery Haven Kerry manager, Siobhan MacSweeney, attended the awards ceremony and said she is extremely proud of the charity’s volunteers. “We have the most wonderful volunteers who give of their time so selflessly, and they are truly vital in our day-today service delivery,” she said. “It was so amazing to see Noreen O’ Flaherty, my partner in delivering our selfmanagement programmes, awarded in the Health & Wellbeing category for all her hard work. And for the entire volunteer team to win their category from a group so many other deserving candidates from around Ireland was just wonderful. It was a truly great night, surrounded by so many

A TASTE OF PORTUGAL... BY LAND AND SEA

This simple braise is a mainstay along the coast of sunny Portugal. With clams from the Atlantic sea and pork from the nearby mountains, it speaks to the landscape, and diet, of Portugal itself. Its garlicky broth pairs well with crusty bread and dry Portuguese wine... a classic simple dish if ever there was one!

PORTUGUESE BRAISED PORK AND CLAMS Serves 8

INGREDIENTS • • • • • • • • • •

2 pounds boneless pork shoulder, cut into 1 1/2-inch cubes 2 3/4 teaspoons salt, divided 3/4 teaspoon black pepper, divided 6 garlic cloves, divided 1 cup dry white wine 2 bay leaves 1 tablespoon Pimentón de la Vera dulce 1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil, 1 medium-size onion, thinly sliced 1 (28-ounce) can whole peeled tomatoes, drained and crushed by hand

• • • • • •

1/2 teaspoon crushed red pepper 2 cups chicken stock , 2 pounds baby Yukon Gold potatoes, halved 2 pounds Manila clams or cockles, scrubbed Chopped fresh coriander, for garnish Lemon wedges and crusty bread, for serving

METHOD Season pork all over with 1 1/4 teaspoons salt and 1/2 teaspoon black pepper, and place in a large ziplock plastic bag. Smash 3 garlic cloves, and add to bag with wine, bay leaves, and Pimentón. Seal and refrigerate 8 hours or overnight. Preheat oven to 160c Remove pork from marinade, and pat dry. Remove and discard garlic and bay leaves; reserve remaining marinade. Heat 1 1/2 teaspoons oil in a large Dutch oven over medium-high. Add half of pork, and cook, stirring once or twice, until lightly browned, about 5 minutes. Transfer pork to a plate. Repeat with remaining half of pork. Chop remaining 3 garlic cloves, and add to Dutch oven with onion and remaining 1 1/2 teaspoons oil; cook, stirring often, until golden, about 6 minutes. Stir in crushed tomatoes, red pepper, and reserved marinade Bring to a boil; reduce heat to medium-low, and simmer, stirring often, 3 minutes. Return cooked pork to Dutch oven; stir in 1 cup stock until pork is mostly submerged. Cover and bake in preheated oven until pork is fork-tender, 1 hour and 30 minutes to 2 hours. Stir in potatoes and remaining 1 cup stock. Cover and bake until potatoes are tender, about 30 minutes. Transfer Dutch oven to stovetop over high, and add clams. Cover and cook until clams open, 3 to 5 minutes. (Remove and discard any unopened clams.) Season with remaining 1 1/2 teaspoons salt and remaining 1/4 teaspoon black pepper. Garnish with Coriander, Serve with lemon wedges and crusty bread

A LONG JOKE FOR A CHANGE!

When Grandma Goes To Court Lawyers should never ask a Mississippi grandma a question if they aren’t prepared for the answer. In a trial, a Southern small-town prosecuting attorney called his first witness, a grandmotherly, elderly woman to the stand. He approached her and asked “Mrs. Jones, do you know me?” She responded, “Why yes I do know you since you were a little boy, and frankly you’ve been a big disappointment to me. You lie, you cheat on your wife, and you manipulate people and talk about them behind their backs. You think your a big shot when you haven’t the brains to realize you’ll never amount to anything more than a two-bit paper pusher. Yes I know you. The lawyer was stunned. Not knowing what else to do, he pointed across the room and asked, Mrs. Jones, do you know the defense attorney? She replied, “Why yes I do. I’ve known Mr. Bradley since he was a youngster, too. He’s lazy, bigoted, and he has a drinking problem, He can’t build a normal relationship with anyone, and his law practice is one of the worst in the entire state. Not to mention he cheated on his wife with three different women. One of them was your wife. Yes, I know him.”

coffee morning

Date : Friday 13-11-15 Time : 10.30 - 12.00 The defense attorney nearly died. Place : House , Abbey St. , Tralee The judge asked both counselors to approach the bench and, in a very quiet voice said: “If either of you idiots asks her if she knows me, I’ll send you both to the electric chair.”

Talk is cheap? Have you ever talked to a lawyer? Why did the gym close down? It just didn’t work out!

Be Exam Ready We all know how important study and preparation is coming up to exam time. While most students put in the hours with books, grinds and after school study, it is just as important to give as much thought to your mental and physical wellbeing. Exam stress can play havoc with your body and weaken your immune system. The last thing you need is to get sick during or coming up to exam time. It is essential to help support your mind and body as exam time approaches, some handy tips to help you do this include: • • • • • • • •

Start off your day with a good breakfast that includes power-packed porridge, eggs or a smoothie Keep hydrated (essential for focusing and concentration) Keep to a routine and take regular breaks while studying Learn to recognise when you are stressing; a break or a chat with someone who knows the pressure you are under will get things into perspective Stay away from caffeine and sugary drinks as they only put extra pressure on the adrenals (stress glands) Exercise! Even going for a quick walk will clear the head and boost the brain Keep your sugar levels balanced by eating a healthy snack every few hours, such as a piece of fruit and handful of nuts. See in store for a range of healthy snacks! Try to get enough sleep (at least 8 hours). Sleep helps your brain to assimilate new knowledge into your long-term memory so that you can recall it when it comes to exam day

TRALEE ADVERTISER

Try and stick to these tips as much as possible. In addition, there are some excellent supplements in store which may help to keep you on track. Some of these include... •

• • •

B-COMPLEX: Helps to support the central nervous system and raises your stress tolerance level and coping ability. It also helps to keep your mood balanced! Some of our favourite brands include Viridian or Solo RHODIOLA: A wonderful herb for energy, mental focus and dealing with stress ESSENTIAL FATTY ACIDS: (fish or seed oil in capsule or liquid form): Essential to help with focus, concentration and memory MAGNESIUM: An important mineral that can help support normal energy levels and functioning of the central nervous system. Magnesium aids in calming the nerves and relaxing the muscles, which in turn promotes restful sleep PASSIFLORA: AVAILABLE IN TABLETS, SPRAY AND DROPS.... excellent go to remedy to help settle exam nerves and stress. Also helps you achieve a good nights restful sleep, essential for a clear head on exam day!

Until next time, stay healthy

TALKING SPORT WITH THE TRALEE ADVERTISER

with “The Voice” Pat Harnett

FAI NATIONAl P.R.O. OF THE YEAR WIN FOR THE KERRY HURLERS SETS UP A HUGE JUNE: Following a nail biting win away to Antrim the rewards are huge for Stephen Mulumphy and the Kerry senior hurlers. First up on June 4th is the Joe McDonagh Cup Final against the same opposition which takes place in Croke Park throwing in at 4.30pm. It is part of a double header with Galway taking on Kilkenny in the Leinster senior hurling final from 7pm. Kerry will go into what promises to be another cracker full of confidence. Win or lose they won’t have much time to celebrate/drown their sorrows as on the weekend of June 11th-12th they will face the third team in Munster if the win the Joe McDonagh or at home to Wexford if Antrim win. The following weekend it’s the All Ireland senior hurling quarter finals where the opposition will be either the Leinster or Munster final runner-up. D-DAY 2 FOR KERRY FOOTBALLERS: Killarney will get its Munster football final this Saturday when Limerick are the opponents. It certainly does not have the draw of a Kerry / Cork clash (when Cork were competitive) but from a Kerry point of view there is a job to be done. Jack and the players will not be taking anything for granted but should win handily again. When one looks at the qualifiers there are four tough games and whoever comes through the back door will be battle hardened. The issue again for Kerry is the lack of a real test before the business end of the Championship. However the old mantra still holds – One Game at a Time. The Kerry Ladies will also be in action in the Fitzgerald Stadium next Saturday when they take on Limerick in their Munster Senior Final. The game throws in at 12.15 with the ladies looking to carry on their great season that saw them crowned League winners. Hopefully the Kerry fans will come in early and support both Kerry teams. ALL IRELAND SUCCESS FOR THE U14 KERRY LADIES: Well done to the Kerry u14 Ladies squad and management, and a special shoutout to the Tralee girls who won the All Ireland title defeating Cork in extra time 5-12 to 5-10. PARNELLS NEWS: The club had a number of members in action with Kerry at various grades over the weekend and they all did the club proud. The u12 Blue team enjoyed a strong home win against Killarney in the League Division 1. Both teams played Abbeykillix during the week. The u14 Girls camogie team enjoyed their trip to Tournafulla In the u17 hurling the club enjoyed a narrow 3-07 to 1-11 point win in their re-fixed Division 2 County League game. The win sees Parnells into the semi-final of the competition. Joe McDonagh Cup Final -The club are planning to hire a bus to travel to Croke Park for the final. Please contact David

In the Lotto there was no winner of the jackpot from the numbers drawn 6,8,14 and 16. ST PAT’S NEWS: There was no winner of the Lotto from the numbers drawn 19, 22, 26 and 28 with the next jackpot being e5200. As always there was a great turn-out for the Academy and they will all be in action again this weekend. The u12 girls defeated Castlegregory in a double header (North Kerry Plate Final and County League Round 2) in terrible conditions. The u13’s went down to Killarney Legion. In the u17’s Region the St Pats/Rahillys combination defeated Skellig Valentia 4-15 to 2-11. The Seniors lost out to Currow in Round 7 of the County League. JOHN MITCHELS NOTES: Once again there was a great turn-out for the Academy who will be in action again at the weekend. The u12 Girls went down by just 1 point to Firies. The u14’s and u15’s Boys and Girls are preparing for their County League campaign. The u17 Boys are in Central League action. The Senior Ladies don’t play until June 26th while the Senior Men defeated Na Gaeil in a vital County League game. The Juniors lost to Firies. There was no winner of the Lotto from the numbers drawn 26, 4, 9,6. COMPETITORS WANTED FOR SCOR NA BPAISTI All clubs in the Tralee and St Brendan Board area are requested to enter as many Scor na bPaisti competitions as possible with the Greater Tralee Area finals set to take place in June. The county finals are set for July 2nd. DOUBLE DELIGHT ON THE SOCCER FIELDS: There was joy at both ends of the soccer spectrum for Kerry sides at the weekend. At League of Ireland level the Kerry 17’s were 1-0 winners over Treaty United while the 19’s defeated Wexford United 6-3. Both sides will go into the next phase of the LoI Leagues and Cup with confidence high. At the youngest competitive Inter League age group there was also a very exciting double for Kerry. This time it was the 12’s Girls who won both the Development Cup and the Munster Cup at the SFAI Munster Girls Inter League Finals that were hosted by the KSBGL in Kilbrean Park. Interest now turns to the SFAI National League semi-finals where in the Girls section the 13’s are away to Clare, the 15’s go to Galway and the 16’s travel to South Tipperary.
