KEEP YOUR BUSINESS IN TRALEE AND KEEP TRALEE IN BUSINESS!
LEGAL MATTERS CORNER MIRIAM MC GILLICUDDY ANSWERS YOUR LEGAL QUERIES Grainne was named Grainne by her parents but her birth certificate records her as Granny and she is wondering what she can do to change this. The General Registry Office is the venue in the state that records all births, deaths and marriages. One can get copies of these documents online. Local Registry offices can also give out copies of these certificates. It is a legal requirement that a record be kept of every birth, death and marriage in Ireland. Our non-roman catholic marriage records go back to 1854 and our births roman catholic and deaths records to 1864. During the Covid epidemic people were able to register births and deaths online at gov.ie. Since February 2019 the Irish Certificates have to be recognised reciprocally throughout the European Union. Once can obtain a foreign translation of one’s birth certificate also. There is no charge for registering a birth but there are charges for birth certificate and authenticated copies. The mother and father of the child are the primary people who have responsibility to register the birth of a child which should be done within three months of the birth. It is up to the parents to ensure that all information on the birth certificate is correct. They choose the surname which can either be the father’s name, the mother’s name or a combination of the two. If for any reason there is a clerical error on the face of the certificate Registrar has discretion to amend the certificate. Otherwise the person may have to do a Deed Poll.
A forename can be added, amended or altered on a Birth Record or Birth Certificate by a parent of a child. The application form to alter the forename on a child’s birth certificate can be obtained at your local Civil Registration Office and should ideally be signed by both parents to confirm both parents consent to the alteration. However the form must be submitted with documentary evidence of use of the forename in its new form, or the forenames been added. Evidence of use of the surname may be submitted An error on a Birth Certificate can only be corrected by either parent of the person named on the birth certificate or in the absence of the parents, an older sibling or relative. You cannot apply to alter your own birth record. An application form to “Correct An Error of Fact or Substance on a Birth Certificate” can be obtained from your local Civil Registration Office and once completed and signed in the presence of a Solicitor, Peace Commissioner or Commissioner for Oaths can be submitted with two pieces of documentary evidence proving the error to your local Civil Registration Office to be approved by the Regional Superintendent Registrar. If there is no one available to correct the certificate please contact the General Register’s Office at 1890-252-076 for advice on this matter. Law Quip: My birth certificate is so old it has a stamp expired on it!

National Childcare Scheme Directors of Mounthawk Montessori School & Busy Bees Nursery & Maureen’s Preschool, Tralee, Susan Quirke-Crowley and Maureen Quirke along with General Manager Helena Wallace Dowling are delighted to welcome children back to our centres on our reopening on June 29th allowing us to support our Frontline and Essential Worker, families. We welcome the reinstatement of the National Childcare Scheme and the CCSP scheme by DCYA which will ease the burden of Childcare Fees for many families returning to work. Applications may be made directly on www.ncs.gov.ie While the post Covid19 reopening will look a little different in Early Years settings, we are fortunate as Montessori Schools to already operate our centres along similar lines to ‘play-pods’. In simple terms, children will be allocated a specific place in a specific classroom, for set times and days, with a specific group of friends, being cared for by specific Early Years Teachers. Both of our Friday 26th June 2020
centres enjoy purpose built large outdoor classrooms, poly tunnels, natural planting and learning areas, as well as state of the art indoor learning facilities. This ensures that all of our individual ‘play pods’ can access our Montessori Schools, indoor and outdoor natural areas and gardens safely, allowing for minimal cross over between families on arrival and departure. Our health and safety signage is child friendly with clear and simple visual task analysis to support children’s understanding of our new routines. We are very proud of our wonderful children, our highly qualified Degree led team, and the novel ways we have remained connected with our children and families throughout the lock down. This included online learning activities, story time and project work via Social Media and Zoom. Our objective was to support the children’s emotional well being and feelings of connection with their Teachers, friends, and school community, whilst also supporting our ethos of
‘parents as partners’ during these uncertain times. In addition, our Teachers have been busy upskilling, including Infection Prevention & Control QQI with Kerry College, Monavally, enhancing our preparation for reopening and introducing new policies and procedures to safeguard all stakeholders post CoVid19. As always, our focus will be on teaching Practical Life skills including ‘Hand Hygiene, Cough and Sneeze Etiquette’ and ‘Care of Oneself’, in our warm and nurturing environments as part of our Aistear Montessori Curriculum. Our outdoor classrooms will ensure that children get maximum benefit from their time with us in a safe and healthy manner in addition to their indoor play-pods. To support our preschool class of 2020 to experience a smooth transition from our setting to local primary schools in September, we are offering ‘Stay and Play’ sessions for our Pre-school children from July 20th, this will help to ease separation anxiety as children leave parents for the

Kerry Airport Ensures Employment For All Staff Ahead Of Resumption Of Flights KERRY Airport Ireland has announced that, despite a critical fall in revenue, it will retain its entire workforce on pre-Covid-19 pay rates. This is part of a plan aimed at maintaining the airport’s viability as air travel returns to normal in the coming months. 2020 has been a devastating year for aviation and Kerry Airport, like all airports, has endured its worst downturn in living memory. It is the expectation of all experts in the industry that it will be 2023 before there is a return to the activity that was enjoyed in 2019. To ensure full employment at the airport a new resource system, with the flexibility to schedule the team when they are most needed, is in development. The CEO of Kerry Airport, John Mulhern, said: “I must commend and thank the staff at Kerry Airport who have shown tremendous commitment and resilience in the face of the challenges presented by the Covid-19 pandemic. They remained at work throughout the crisis while shifts were developed to keep them safe. We are clearly facing into a different future and we have resisted taking the option that has Friday 26th June 2020
been experienced elsewhere to lay-off staff, cut wages and reduce hours. Over the coming weeks, with the introduction of the new and more efficient scheduling system, it is our intention to see all staff return to full pay, full hours and full employment. The success of this reorganisation will determine whether further and more difficult decisions are required down the line.” This positive development for staff at Kerry Airport has been announced ahead of the resumption of Ryanair flights in July. Routes to London (Luton & Stansted), Manchester, Frankfurt Hahn, Berlin, Alicante, Faro are set to commence soon while the twice daily Aer Lingus Regional Kerry-Dublin service, operated by Stobart Air, has continued to operate throughout the Covid-19 pandemic. Kerry Airport Ireland has introduced enhanced measures to protect staff and passengers who are passing through the airport. Passengers must wear a face mask on entering the terminal and throughout their journey through the airport and on the aircraft.
Now more than ever, passengers must arrive in plenty of time for their flight and anyone not flying, when possible, should not enter the terminal. “Kerry Airport continues to be an important strategic asset to Kerry in strengthening transportation links both nationally and internationally and we will play a greater

economic role than ever when attracting investment and tourists to the region,” said John Mulhern. For up-to-the-minute information on flights to and from Kerry Airport, visit www. KerryAirport.ie and follow us on social media.

10 A Beautiful Short Story
Get your business noticed in Tralee’s favourite Friday read
As the Sun Rises it Sets A very warm welcome back to Chris & Colette Wishing you optimistic printing & page turning. Lovely story of optimism and hope sent into us by our wonderful storyteller, Fidelma Fitzgerald It would not feel right at this time for me not to start my words with bringing our attention to the short version of the serenity prayer. Is as follows. GOD GRANT ME THE SERENITY TO ACCECPT THE THINGS I CANNOT CHANGE. COURAGE TO CHANGE THE THINGS I CAN AND THE WISDOM TO KNOW THE DIFFERENCE. We the people of our very homes, towns, counties, states, & countries have witnessed history take place, within this huge mass of sudden control we witnessed more then historical events. We witnessed time being taken, Adults were taken, children were taken, work was taken, social interactions were taken and the world as we knew it had been forced to stop. Upon reflection many of us had great plans and ideas for the year

2020. The universe had something else planned. It had something to say to each and everyone of us. The telling of truths and the heartaches of lies all rose to the surface during our time of crisis. Bravery & courage, humility, & empathy, Justice & Injustice all showed up and we all know which of us had a badge of honour in any of those virtues. I hold my hand up to owning a badge to all 6. Having lived through this time of uncertainty, for those of you who will join me momentarily lets look into the unlocking of the lock down and simply ask as above mentioned, God we ask for the peace of mind to accept whatever has been and whatever is to come. We ask for strength to do our part no matter how big or how small. We ask for Solomon’s direction in showing us wisdom to understand the differences, in the pain we most face and equally the
joy that we feel & share. As the sun rises it sets. The time we get on our beautiful revolving earth is precious. Going & growing forward make it worthwhile it will stand to you in the here-after. As someone I admire, and love reminded me as the rain beat fabulously down on us both. “what you reap is what you sow”. Written by Fidelma Fitzgerald The Philomena Dramatics

‘Let’s Get Kerry Cycling’ As part of the national campaign aimed at promoting activity, mental wellbeing and staying connected during the COVID-19, on Friday evening Kerry County Council launched another element of the wellbeing campaign, called “Let’s Get Kerry Cycling”. This announcement sees this initiative being rolled out over the coming weeks, commencing Friday 3rd July and will run until Sunday 16th August. Previous campaign elements included the “Kerry Step Challenge” and the ‘In the Bag’ initiative. The #inthistogetherkerry Campaign is building on the concept of doing something that makes people feel a little healthier and a little happier during our current times. Therefore, Kerry County Council, Kerry Recreation and Sports Partnership/Sport Ireland and the Chain Gang Cycling Club have developed a unique and enjoyable programme of simple cycling themed activities, which are suitable for people of all ages and abilities. The ‘Let’s Get Kerry Cycling’ Friday 26th June 2020
initiative involves a 6-week programme comprising of six fun themed activities, based on our humble bicycle. The weekly activities will include week 1 cycling solo or with a friend to the shop or perhaps meet for an outdoor cuppa, week 2 a family cycle, week 3 a cycle to a historical monument or a wild atlantic way sign, week 4 a cycle wearing ones’ favourite club or county colours, week 5 a cycle to the water’s edge and let’s wrap up the 6 weeks by cycling a marathon ( 42.1km ) over 7 days during our final week! One will have lots of fun completing these manageable challenges and activities and possibly meet and greet other cyclists and neighbours along the journey throughout ones’ locality. We envisage individuals and family members will exercise personal responsibility over the 6-week timeframe, bearing in mind the themed cycles are to be completed within the current HSE and recommended travel guidelines. To get involved, all sign up all details are on the sports partnership website www. kerryrecreationandsports.ie via
Eventbrite and why not follow us on Facebook. We are hopeful the “Let’s Get Kerry Cycling” initiative will be interactive, through the sharing of photos and experiences of one’s adventures. Also, anyone who signs up has the option to choose a stylish neck buff from four different styles. Throughout the six weeks we will have a weekly “surprise” for the best photo and story shared. Launching our initiative is our programme ambassador, West Kerry legend the wonderful Paudie Fitzgerald, former

FITNESS!
Get your business noticed in Tralee’s favourite Friday read
Hello everyone! I hope you are all well.
I can’t believe it’s been over three months since I have stepped foot in a gym. Home workouts have been my friend recently, so I said I’d talk about what I’ve been up to fitness wise and what I’m looking forward to. Ok so we all know it has been a WEIRD time the past fee months, quarantine has had so many different stages, baking stages, outdoor socially distant parades, home workouts, etc etc. I took advantage of Kiki Nugent’s free daily live workouts in Instagram @_kikifit_ and i am so so happy I did. Before the shops closed fully I dashed around to Argos and Elverys for 5kg weights and a 16kg kettlebell. So thankfully I got my hands on some weights, and I had a resistance band already. So I was well equipped for all the home workouts. From doing Kiki’s workouts daily, I decided to sign up for her 1:! PT, because it got to the stage where I was SICK AND TIRED of trying to decide what to eat everyday and trying to cook outrageous things that would be very calorific just to make my day exciting. I was fully cooking home made buttermilk deep fried chicken nuggets at home. No need.
of course, all of the friendly faces on all of the guys and gals in The Tralee Arena. They all have such good energy and going to the gym there was such a lovely part of my day, most days. Working out in your bedroom just is not the same, definitely for me as I work from home, well worked… well I’m still working but it’s more content creation now.
ANYWAY.
I just want to put it out there that no matter what you did over the last few months, that is ok. If you didn’t have the energy to workout, if you found it hard to be self motivated, that is ok. A global pandemic is not the time to be worrying about your motivation, everyone thrives differently in different situations - just because I felt like getting an online PT, doesn’t mean you should have. I think it’s important going forward we remember that we all experience things differently.
I have been loving the accountability that having an online PT has brought to my life again, I have weekly check ins every Saturday and a workout and meal plan to stick to. This kind of thing might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but it really works for me and I enjoy the not having to think aspect to be honest. In the same breath. I CANNOT WAIT TO GET BACK INSIDE A GYM. I will be RUNNING to The Tralee Arena when it re-opens. For me, you just can’t beat a good gym vibe. Blaring music, other people working out, and

ALLERGIC RHINITIS Typical symptoms include a runny nose, sneezing, sinus congestion plus itchy and watering eyes. Unlike Hayfever, allergic rhinitis tends to affect people all year round, although symptoms can worsen at certain times of year when pollen counts are high. A food intolerance may also be a trigger for some people so it worth keeping a food diary to eliminate a certain food group if this is the problem. FOODS TO AVOID: Sugars and high mucus forming foods such as full fat dairy products, cheese and chocolate. Reduce white flour and pasta, orange juice and tomatoes. Wheat, dairy products and wine are also known triggers for some people. FRIENDLY FOODS: Include plenty of garlic, onions, root ginger and freshly squeezed fruit and vegetable juice (not out of a carton) If you have an intolerance to wheat try rye, rice or oat crackers. Dairy alternatives include rice, goats, almond or oat milk.
TRALEE ADVERTISER
REMEDIES WHICH MAY HELP INCLUDE: When symptoms are acute take up to 4grams of VITAMIN C plus 500mg of PANTOTHENIC ACID (vitamin B5) NETTLE TEA up to 3 times daily may also help to alleviate symptoms. QUERCETIN can also be used to help reduce the allergic response: 400mg 2-3 times daily while the symptoms are acute. MUCOUS LIQUESCENCE is a very effective homeopathic remedy to help break down mucous build up. Take 1 x teaspoon daily. NAT MUR TISSUE SALT may also be beneficial if you have symptoms of ALLERGIC RHINITIS . For advice and information call in store and we can discuss your symptoms and advise you which remedy would suit your requirements best. Until next time, stay healthy.

Beauty
HELLO BEAUTIFUL PEOPLE How are you all doing? Wow. It has definitely been a while. I hope you’re all well.
Seeing as this is my first column post quarantine, I said I would chat about all of the products that I adored using throughout the lockdown (mostly skincare tbh). I found a few new products in the last 3 months and I am very excited to share them with you. SOL DE JANEIRO BRAZILIAN BUM BUM CREAM I rediscovered this during the last 3 months, and I don’t think I can ever be without it now. It is honestly the best, most luxurious, amazing smelling body moisturiser I have ever used. It dries so so quick but is still super hydrating which is a BIG PLUS for me. It is a little more on the higher end of body moisturisers but, in my opinion, splurging a little on something I use on my body everyday is SO worth it.
DERMALOGICA DAILY MICROFOLIANT Probably my favourite skincare product of 2020, not gonna lie. EVERYONE needs to add this product to their routine. It is a powder exfoliator that is gentle enough for daily use and can be used on the most sensitive skin types. This has improved my skin’s texture so much. I have had it since January and I haven’t used it up fully yet, that’s over 6 months! So even though it is a little more expensive you definitely get value for money.
NEW
SIMPLE WATER BOOST MICELLAR FACIAL GEL WASH Right back down to the budget side of life with this one. I discovered Skincare By Hyram over the past few months and he recommended this Simple cleanser. I needed a ‘get out of jail’ cleanser as I was waiting for another to be delivered (I’m sure you can all relate), so I picked up this one in Boots. I love it, it cleans my skin without leaving it feeling dry.
JAMAICAN BLACK CASTOR OIL Another quarantine find. I have heard about the benefits of castor oil in your hair for a while, and even more specifically, Jamaican Black castor oil. I have been using it as a hot oil mask once a week and I feel like my hair is definitely growing. I got mine in Boots!
SYSTEM PROFESSIONALS SCALP BALANCE MASK I don’t know if it was only me but during the last three months I found that my scalp was very dry to the point where I had bits of dandruff, lovely. So I got this mask to balance everything out. It’s a VERY hydrating mask that not only made my scalp feel better, but my ends too!
Throughout quarantine I have been uploading a lot of content online, if you wanna keep up with me more you can find me on many parts of the internet.

DERMALOGICA RETINOL CLEARING OIL One of the most exciting things to happen over the last 3 months is the fact I introduced retinol into my skincare routine. But not just any retinol, the new Dermalogica one which also helps to clear your skin. MY DREAM COMBINATION. This retinol also has salicylic acid which means it clears breakouts whilst reducing signs of aging. Absolutely key.

USE YOUR FEET, NOT YOUR FINGERS! SHOP LOCAL
Eileen from Oxfam, Tralee, needs Volunteers! Dear Editor, At the start of April, along with many other businesses in Kerry we made the difficult decision to close our shop in Tralee – to protect staff, volunteers and customers – and to play our part in Ireland’s response to COVID-19. Our network of shops play a vital role in supporting Oxfam’s work in some of the world’s poorest countries in the world, helping people to lift themselves out of poverty and thrive as well as saving lives when disaster strikes. As I write this, myself and my team are now thankfully back doing what we do best and our
shop is now open after two months of closure. The loss of income during this period dealt a massive blow to the capacity of Oxfam and our work to beat poverty and fight inequality. I am writing to you as we are in desperate need of volunteers and would encourage people interested in lending sometime to pop in and let us know. Our shop is a hive of activity with lots of chats and opportunities to meet new people, learn new skills and of course, have plenty of fun along the way. Another way people can offer support is to get decluttering and drop their donations of clothes, accessories and bric-
a-brac into us. It only takes a minute to bag up unwanted items and drop them to Oxfam, but it makes a lifetime of difference to people living in poverty around the world – especially with COVID-19 now reaching some of the most fragile places on earth, where Oxfam is on the ground responding. We are really looking forward to welcoming customers back over the coming weeks and hope their support and generosity will continue into the future.
Yours, Eileen O’Hanlon, Shop Manager, Oxfam Tralee 6 Abbey Court, Tralee,Co. Kerry 066 712 7655

LAUGHTER ....THE BEST MEDICINE !
IN THE WOODS
A blonde, a brunette, and a redhead were walking through the woods one night when they happened upon some tracks. “I think they’re moose tracks!”, said the blonde. “No, they’re deer tracks!”, said the brunette. “Nuh uh, these are elk tracks!”, chirped the redhead. ...they were still arguing about it when the train hit them.
TRUMP, PUTIN AND MERKEL AT THE BALTIC SEA
Trumpdeclares: Our submarines can stay submerged for ten days before needing air. Putin promptly says: That’s nothing. Russian submarines can stay submerged for up to a month. Merkel is embarrassed and stays silent. Suddenly a submarine emerges. The hatch opens and the man yells: Heil Hitler! Is the war over?
A MAN ASKS A FARMER NEAR A FIELD,
Exasperated, the 60-year-old said, “You pee every morning at 6:00 and crap every morning at 6:30. So what’s so bad about being 80?” “I don’t wake up until 7:00.”
MAHATMA GANDHI,
as you know, walked barefoot most of the time, which produced an impressive set of calluses on his feet. He also ate very little, which made him rather frail and with his odd diet, he suffered from bad breath. This made him. (Oh, man, this is so bad, it’s good. . .) A super calloused fragile mystic hexed by halitosis.
A WIFE STARTS TAKING HER CLOTHES OFF
and asks her husband, ‘What attracts you to me the most ? my pretty face or my great body?’ Husband looks her up and down for a moment and replies, ‘Your sense of humour.”
THE ROAD ...
.A man walks into a bar with a slab of asphalt under his arm and says: “A beer please, and one for the road.”
TOM TOM
A man asks a farmer near a field, “Sorry sir, would you mind if I crossed your field instead of going around it? You see, I have to catch the 4:23 train.”
Doc, I can’t stop singing ‘The Green, Green Grass of Home.’” “That sounds like Tom Jones Syndrome.” “Is it common?” Well, “It’s Not Unusual.”
The farmer says, “Sure, go right ahead. And if my bull sees you, you’ll even catch the 4:11 one.”
THE HEADS OF COORS, BUDWEISER AND GUINNESS GO TO LUNCH
SO THREE OLD MEN MET ON A SUNDAY MORNING...
“Sixty is the worst age to be,” said the 60-year-old man. “You always feel like you have to pee and most of the time you stand there and nothing comes out.” “Ah, that’s nothin,” said the 70-year-old. “When you’re seventy, you don’t have a bowel movement any more. You take laxatives, eat bran, sit on the toilet all day and nothin’ comes out!” “Actually,” said the 80-year -old, “Eighty is the worst age of all.” “Do you have trouble peeing, too?” asked the 60-year old. “No, I pee every morning at 6:00. I pee like a racehorse on a flat rock: no problem at all.” “So, do you have a problem with your bowel movement?” “No, I have one every morning at 6:30.”

T RQU ING CARS! 26 O PREMIUM ADVERTISING VW ARTEON ‘SHOOTING BRAKE’ RIVALS JAG XF !
These are first pictures and details of Volkswagen’s new Arteon shooting brake which is being launched in conjunction with a heavy revision of the existing car. The latest models eradicate initial criticism of the current motor by giving the new version a completely new cockpit. It gets the Volkswagen infotainment system (digital cockpit, 9.2ins touchscreen) as well as the new body style. We can expect to see it here by October, I’m told. The estate version has more second-row headroom and boot space. A substantial spread of driver assistance and safety elements including travel assist/adaptive cruise control awaits new owners. There is a 1.5-litre petrol (150ps) with a specially tuned timing system generating lower fuel consumption. There is a 2-litre (190ps) too and a powerhouse 280ps as well as 150ps and 200ps versions of the 2-litre diesel. A plug-in version is expected quite soon too: 1.4TSi, 115bhp (218ps system total). There is an electric-only range of 54km. And there will be a high-performance R model. The specially tuned 2-litre 4cyl with a “torque splitter” develops 320ps. And there are quadruple tailpipes. (Independent motoring)
TOYOTA TO DOUBLE ‘FACE IT DOWN ‘ POINTS !
Toyota is offering double ‘Face It Down’ points for all essential journeys between June 15 and July 10. The ‘FaceItDown’ app is intended to incentivise motorists to place their phone face down when driving to avert distraction. For each kilometre you drive with the app engaged and phone faced down, you can earn points redeemable against hot beverages in Circle K, cheaper FBD car insurance and a number of parking incentives with QPark. Since its 2017 launch, the app has recorded more than 27 million kilometres driven in Ireland with phones faced down. Drivers can download the free FaceItDown app on the App Store and Google Play. All you have to do is start the app before starting out and face the phone down to collect points while driving. Maxus, recently rebranded from LDV, is launching its first new-platform commercial vehicle under the new name - the Deliver 9. It comes in standard and luxury guise, they say. The brand is distributed across seven right-hand drive territories by the Harris Group. The Deliver 9 has a two-litre 163PS diesel and standard spec includes electric power steering and autonomous emergency braking. Rear doors open to 260 degrees for easy loading, there is a low rear step and an LED-illuminated load compartment. There is a choice of front and rear-wheel drive; it comes in three lengths - (long: 5,940mm, medium: 5,546mm and short: 5,180mm) and three heights - (extra high: 2,755mm, high 2,535mm and medium: 2,385mm). The range includes crew cab, chassis and minibus models. The commercial starts from €26,341 ex-VAT. (indo motoring )
FIAT CHRYSLER HAS ITALIAN GOVT BACKING
Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) has secured a €6.3 billion (£5.7bn) credit line backed by the Italian government, Reuters reports. Previous reports from mid-May suggested FCA was attempting to secure a share of the government’s coronavirus emergency financing scheme. Reuters says the court’s approval came following an endorsement from the economy ministry and the loan will be issued by Intesa Sanpaolo, Italy’s biggest retail bank. The firm, which has its financial headquarters in London, earlier scrapped its dividend payments to shareholders after a planned £7.4bn sale of reinsurer PartnerRe, owned by the holding firm of the Agnelli family alongside the controlling share of FCA, collapsed. The PSA Group, which has agreed a tie-up with FCA to create the world’s fourth largest car-making group, also scrapped its dividend for 2020. The decision allowed them to keep just under £1bn for day-to-day operations during the coronavirus crisis.Almost every car manufacturer has suffered extensive financial setbacks or share price drops during the pandemic, which caused car registrations during April to fall by 97% in the UK alone. Europe is only now easing out of its lockdown measures and it’s expected the market will gradually return to healthier figures. A primary reason for FCA seeking the merger with PSA was to bolster its European arm, which has struggled over the years with poor sales, low margins on mainstream cars and under-funded premium brands such as Maserati and Alfa Romeo. The French group’s expertise in the market, along with its superior progress on electrification, is hoped to help FCA recover its success in the region. Friday 26th June 2020

KNOWN KNOWNS, KNOWN UNKNOWNS AND UNKNOWN UNKNOWNS: If ever a comment that was laughed at when uttered in 2002 (by US Secretary of State Donald Rumsfeld) became a truth it was his “known knowns which are things we know, known unknowns which are some things we do not know and unknown unknown which are things we don’t know we don’t know”!! Little did we know at the Tralee Advertiser that when our March 18th edition hit the shelves the next one would not be until mid -June!! But the important thing (relatively of course) is that We Are Back!! THE EFFECTS OF COVID 19: Firstly it has been a very tough time for many all over the country and in Kerry 310 people were hit with the virus. Many families have lost loved ones which is very sad. I must say without getting involved in any debate that many families in our county have also lost loved ones with no connections COVID 19 in the last few months and we think of all those families. THE MANY POSITIVES: On the positive side the sacrifices put in by everyone in Kerry meant we were always down at the bottom of the league when counting the number affected. And hopefully those who still have symptoms – including one person I know who has been in hospital for a few months – are on the way back to full health. And while many people were able to cocoon many others were not in a position to do so. The Tralee Advertiser wants to thank every person who remained at work throughout the last few months. From those who were on the real frontlines in UHK and in the emergency services to the retail, transport, postal workers who really stepped up with their contacts for isolated houses and also to our colleagues in the media both in print and on the radio who continued to provide us with information and entertainment since March. What has also come about because of Covid is how the community pulled together and looked out for each other, supported volunteer groups, donated money, time or provisions etc. For example, and it is just one of many groups who are doing great work, is the Meals on Wheels service in Tralee who are delivering over 370 meals a day. This is a huge increase in their pre Covid numbers and came about because many of the top chefs in the county donated their time, Ballyseedy Garden Centre and Tralee IT where the food was cooked and many many Friday 26th June 2020

food providers donated food. The question must now be asked by the Vincent de Paul who coordinate the service is to what the future is as the chefs return to work and the supply of this number of meals on a daily basis is not sustainable. Of course numbers will probably drop as people, mostly elderly, begin to feel more comfortable in going to their local shops. Getting back into a sporting sphere which is the basis of this page a huge thank you must go the members of the sporting organisations who stepped up and volunteered their services in many ways including delivering foods and medicines to those who were cocooning, And finally while everyone has their thoughts onto things that the Government did or didn’t do it is fair to say that they did as good a job as possible under unique possibilities. This is also true of our local politicians and County Council employees who worked and continue to work hard to ensure that as many services as possible were not disrupted or if they were they are back now. THE VALUE OF SPORT: When you are involved in sport or indeed in writing about it it’s easy to forget how much it actually means in the lives of so many. It is only when all sport came to a halt both locally and on television that we realised the void it left. For many that trip to the local pitch to watch a game, the visit to the clubhouse where there is a bar, picking up the paper to read about your favourite sport etc is a huge part of so many lives and also gives so many of us something to talk about. Here again great credit goes to those who were able to give up ‘our fix’ over the last few months by reviewing old games and drawing up lists of the greatest stars and events. But more importantly we now have a greater understanding of the benefits of sport to the mental health of both younger and older. While competitiveness is a vital part of sport this lay off might mean there might be a greater emphasis on getting people to take part and the benefits of groups getting together for training. Obviously for many the aim of the training is to get onto the team but there are others who might not be as motivated and clubs must always cater for these. Many clubs now have now have sections for members outside of the main stream or specialist clubs like the Kingdom Wheelblasters who do such great work and maybe Sport Ireland, the Government and the Kerry Sports Partnership need to look at more ways of supporting these.
When mentioning the Government they must be thanked for their announcement of the e40 million extra last week for sporting bodies to get back to action. This could be one of Minister Brendan Griffin’s last announcements in his role in the Department of Transport, Sport and Tourism and if so it’s a great way to finish off. It would be great, if unlikely, that the new Minister or Junior Minister in this Department was again from Kerry. But now we are in the great, if unexpected, place of sports clubs opening up and sporting bodies releasing fixtures for games that will begin in the next week or two. THE RETURN OF SPORTS ACTION: It looked for a long time that we would see very little action in 2020 but things have dramatically changed in the last month. And it wrong to criticise any sporting administrator for saying something a few months or weeks ago and then having them change their mind as the COVID situation is a very fluid one. What is right is that they adapted to the changes. We must also take a moment to remember all the work that was put in by many organising committees only to see their event cancelled. Some have been rescheduled but some have been shelved for the year and that’s hard for all those who put so much so much into organising As we write this we are all looking forward to this Monday, June 29th when all pitches will be open and training and games are returning. Yes there are still procedures that have to be in place and will probably be there for a while to come. However if things continue to improve then hopefully these will be at a minimum and dressing rooms will soon be back in use. And of course the really big news is that by the end of the month crowds of 500 will be able to gather. For the majority of local games in Kerry this will be ideal and by the time the bigger games come at local level hopefully this number will have greatly increased. Of course for the events with the biggest attendances they will be hoping that by the time their fixtures come around there will be very few limits. This would be the hope for the likes of the Kerry senior football and hurling games, the Listowel Racing Festive and the later meetings at the Killarney Racecourse, SuperLeague and National League basketball and the Killarney Historic Rally. All of these events will be in the fourth quarter of the year so exact procedures for these to take place will not be known for a while. But isn’t a great list and it is not by any means an exhaustive one of things to look forward to on the sporting from for Kerry.

Greyhound racing was the first live sport to return this week behind closed doors and once again they have shown the way as did Irish racing as both of these sports had the experience of running events before the full shutdown. And the Kingdom Greyhound Stadium will be one of the first to welcome crowds to watch live sport followed by football and soccer which will also be back competitively by the end of July. Yes those of us going to games will have to be personally responsible as we have all become accustomed to. Those taking part in the various sports will also have to follow their protocols. But everyone will buy into this so we can all take part and enjoy live sport again. For too long we have been watching virtual sports, repeats, discussions on the repeats and lately games with no crowds. And as good as all that was nothing will beat that feeling of leaving the house to go to your favourite spot in your favourite sporting arena and cheering on your favourite teams as they run out for the first time in months. SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL SPONSOR: Finally just a word for local businesses as its time to support these as many face a challenging future. These are the businesses who have always supported our local sports clubs and will continue to do so in as much as possible. But if we all support them then it will come back in many multiples in sponsorship. YOUR SPORT, YOUR COLUMN, YOUR NOTES: Next week we will return to featuring the notes of Tralee’s sporting clubs. We want to cover all clubs and organisations and also want to include activities from supporters clubs. We know many clubs have big branches in Tralee. We also are very keen to give smaller sports their time in the spotlight as well. All you need is someone to send in your details on a weekly basis by Monday lunchtime and we will edit it together. So it’s over now to all the PRO’s or committee members in the Tralee area. All you need to do email you notes to traleeadvertiser@gmail. com. We will get you news out to loyal readership in the Tralee area.
