KERRY SKIN CLINIC LEG ULCERS BY DR DAVID BUCKLEY Leg ulcers can be very painful, foul smelling and uncomfortable. They can also be difficult to heal. They mostly occur in the elderly and the most common cause is due to varicose veins. Any adult with an ulcer in their lower leg that does not heal within two to four weeks with simple home dressings should be assessed by their GP. The doctor would normally check the wound to ensure it is not infected. The doctor may also check the patient’s general health and do blood tests to rule out underlying conditions such as diabetes, anaemia or kidney disease. Small ulcers may respond to a topical or oral antibiotic with simple wound dressings. Larger, more persistent leg ulcers associated with varicose veins may need tight (compression) bandaging from their toes up to their knees. However, the patient’s circulation to the lower leg should be assessed by checking the blood pressure in the lower leg using a Doppler ultrasound to ensure they have good arterial circulation prior to applying compression bandaging.

Compression bandaging can feel quite tight initially and should only be applied by a nurse or doctor trained in bandaging techniques. The patient needs to elevate their leg above their head while lying down at least two hours in the morning and evening when they are in compression bandaging. The patient can walk all they like but they should not stand in one position for any length of time as this will aggravate the ulcer. Compression bandaging is usually reapplied once a week and it may take six to twelve weeks to heal a small ulcer. Patients with ulcers that fail to heal with this type of treatment, may need to see a skin specialist to rule out more unusual and rare conditions that may cause leg ulcers such as diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, poor circulation as a result of smoking or skin cancer. Patients with poor circulation, who are unsuitable for compression bandaging, may be required to see a vascular surgeon who may be able to improve the circulation to their lower leg by cleaning out the arteries in the leg. Some patients may need skin grafts if other treatments are not suitable or not successful.

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE.. Kerry dairy leaders graduate from ICOS Production Supervisory Programme Graduates from Kerry Group at the ICOS Skillnet Production Supervisory Programme Graduation held in Portlaoise, Co. Laois., Back (L-R) Matt Treacy, Kerry Group HR Director with colleagues John Walsh, Jackie Finucane, John Corridan, Emma Downes, PJ Mulvihill, Niamh Crowley, Michael Clancy, Kerry Group HR; Front (L-R) Kevin Meehan, Zelda Boyle, Matthew Foley, Thelma Casagrande, Liam Weir.Picture: Alf Harvey. The Kerry graduates emerged from the Irish Co-operative Organisation Society (ICOS) Production Supervisory Programme which has been designed exclusively for the Irish co-operative sector by ICOS Skillnet, the learning

and development division of ICOS (Irish Co-operative Organisation Society) in conjunction with University College Cork. ICOS Skillnet is funded by Skillnet Ireland and member companies. Skillnet Ireland is funded from the National Training Fund through the Department of Education and Skills. Participants studied several technical and management topics including, dairy technology, microbiology and environmental topics, future trends, effective communication, conflict management and performance management. The modules were taught through a mix of lectures, workshops and selfdirected learning. Designed

to foster a multi-disciplinary approach to simulate real organisation and business conditions, course participants

HR Suite celebrates 10th birthday in a 'Novel' way! The HR Suite has launched a new book to promote diversity and

inclusivity in order to mark its 10th anniversary in business. The workbook, entitled 'Celebrating You', will be available to download for free and it is hoped it will be used to motivate discussions around diversity and inclusivity - both at home and at work. The book is aimed at teachers, parents and guardians who can read it as a storybook to children to spark conversations around various topics. It is also hoped that other companies will use it as part of their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programmes. 'Celebrating You' was the brainchild of The HR Suite founder Caroline McEnery. She says: "When our 10th anniversary was coming up, I wanted do something different that would give something back to the community in a positive way. We have received so much support over the ten years since we were in business that I wanted to show how grateful we were by doing some good for society. . As equality and diversity in the workplace has never been a more important topic to embrace as employers, managers and team members, we decided to work on this initiative." While the book is free, the HR Suite would encourage those who download it to donate to Enable Ireland, which works to enable and empower children and adults with disabilities to achieve independence, choice and inclusion. Caroline adds: "We believe that CSR goes beyond compliance; that it is a voluntary concept, led by a business, to positively impact society. This interactive workbook for children can stimulate and work in conjunction with companies' CSR movements. It could be rolled out to all employees - not just those who are parents but coaches, uncles, aunts etc." ". The topic will become a social norm to deal with challenges that occur in life's journey," says Caroline. The HR Suite is based in Kerry and Dublin and offers tailored human resources and business solutions to clients across the country. It has 15 full-time staff members, including a team of consultants. 8

Siamsa Tíre announces winner of the Visual Arts Residency 2019

Meadhbh tops the AIMS Awards! Meadhbh Lyons scooped the Best Choreographer award at the AIMS weekend in Killarney. Her choreography with Galway University Musical Society (GUMS) production of Pippin was judged best in Ireland. Meadhbh was nominated for the award two years ago for her work with Gums staging of Urinetown. She has just completed her degree in Drama Theatre and Performance at NUIG. Meadhbh is the daughter of Seán and Clo Lyons, Caherslee Tralee.

Zoë Uí Fhaoláin Green has been awarded this year's Visual Arts Residency at Siamsa Tíre. This residency aims to reflect creatively on the impact of Climate Change on Siamsa Tíre's local community and to use cultural practice as a way to communicate an imagined future with a local and international audience. Zoë will take up her residency on the 1st of July and the residency will culminate in a public event for Culture Night on the 20th of September. Born in Hull, Yorkshire, for the past 12 years, she has been living and working in West Kerry.Zoë's practice covers a wide range of artforms, particularly dance 10

TRALEE ADVERTISER

and visual arts. Most recently, Zoë performed in Cláirseach ina dTost (The Harp Silenced) devised and performed by Giorria theatre collective at the Mick Lally Theatre in Galway in May of this year. Zoë is passionate about nature and biodiversity and tries to live sustainably. Zoe plans to engage with the local community in Tralee and around Siamsa Tíre. As part of the residency, Siamsa Tíre will work with Zoë to calculate the carbon footprint of any associated travel. Every effort will be made to minimise the residency's carbon footprint and there will be regular updates on social media as the residency Friday 5th July 2019

progresses. Over the last number of years, Siamsa Tíre has been working to reduce its environmental impact, in particular, its carbon footprint. Climate Change will have a potentially very significant impact on towns like Tralee if sea levels rise as much as is predicted, and on organisations like Siamsa Tíre which is situated in an area at risk from future flooding. "As a cultural institution, and as part of our Greening Siamsa initiative, we want to support artists who creatively address the culture shift which will be necessary in order to adequately confront Climate Change." Answer The Back to School Clothing and Footwear Allowance (BTSCFA) helps you meet the cost of uniforms and footwear for children going to school. Your children must be aged between 4 and 22 on or before 30 September 2019. If they are aged between 18 and 22 they must be in full-time second-level education in a recognised school or college. To qualify, you must be getting a social welfare payment or taking part in a training, employment or adult education scheme. In general, you must be getting an Increase for a Qualified Child with your payment. People getting the Working Family Payment and the Back to Work Family Dividend can qualify for BTSCFA. Also, your total family income must be below a certain level for your family size. The Allowance is €150 for children aged between 4 and 11 and €275 for those aged between 12 and 22. The Department of Employment Affairs and Social Protection pays the BTSCFA automatically to many families. This means that they do not have to apply for the payment. If you qualify automatically, you will be notified by 24 June 2019 and you will get your payment the week beginning 8 July 2019. If you do not get an automatic payment you must apply for the Allowance. If any of your children are aged 18 or over, you must also apply for the Allowance for them and show evidence that they are in second-level education (even if automatic payments have issued for other children in the family). From 24 June 2019, you can apply for the Allowance online through mywelfare.ie. You must have a Public Services Card and a verified MyGovID account to apply online. You can also apply using an application form, which is available in all Intreo centres and Social Welfare Branch Offices and online from welfare.ie or you can request a form by texting Form BTSCFA followed by your name and address to 51909 or by emailing BSCFA@welfare.ie. The closing date for applications is 30 September 2019. A dedicated phone line is available to answer your questions from 24 June 2019: (071) 919 3319. If you are refused the Allowance, you can ask for a review of the decision.

HEALTHY RECIPES for 2019

Summer time is Salad time!

With the sun here and the temperature going in the right direction, something light and zesty is needed. What better than a summer salad!... so here is a splendid salad for those long warm evenings or great as a side when you're treating a few friends to a BBQ

PICKLED ASIAN PEAR SALAD

WITH CREAMY LEMON DRESSING Serves 12

INGREDIENTS • • • • • • • • • •

3 cups water 1/4 cup sugar 2 tablespoons sea salt 1 teaspoon fennel seeds 1 lemon, halved 3 large pears—halved, cored and thinly sliced lengthwise 1/4 cup crème fraîche or sour cream 1/4 cup fresh lemon juice 1 medium shallot, minced 1/2 teaspoon finely grated lemon

• • •

• • •

zest 1/2 cup extra-virgin olive oil Salt and cayenne pepper 4 small heads frisée lettuce (2 pounds), tender green and white leaves only, torn into bite-size pieces 4 bunches watercress (2 pounds), thick stems discarded 1 red onion, thinly sliced lengthwise 1 1/2 cups crumbled blue cheese (6 ounces)

METHOD In a medium bowl, combine the water, sugar, salt and fennel seeds; stir to dissolve the sugar and salt. Squeeze the lemon halves over the water and drop them in the bowl. Add the Asian pears and stir to separate the slices. Cover the pears with a plate to keep them submerged and refrigerate overnight or for up to 2 days. In a very large bowl, whisk the crème fraîche with the lemon juice, shallot and lemon zest. Gradually whisk in the olive oil and season with salt and cayenne. Drain the pears in a colander. Add the pears, frisée, watercress and red onion to the dressing, season with salt and cayenne and toss. Sprinkle the blue cheese over the salad and serve. Make Ahead The pickled pears, dressing and cleaned greens can be refrigerated separately for up to 2 days. Slice the onion just before serving

Kerry Restaurants Association Call Work Permit Regime "A Shambles" South west Ireland and Kerry members of the Restaurants Association of Ireland

have this week called the increase processing times for work permit applications a shambles. Since mid-June 2019, the processing times for work permit applications has increased by two weeks to 13 weeks. The CEO of the Association, Adrian Cummins said, “The current process for work permit applications is not fit for purpose. Reform is needed to ensure that employers and employees don’t lose out because of failings within the work permit application centre.""The Restaurant Sector are calling for a National Skills Shortage Summit in light of failings by the Department of Business, Enterprise & Jobs where employers, agencies and Departments can agree emergency actions to solve the skills shortage in Ireland."

TORQUING CARS! NEW EV'S MUST MAKE NOISE WHILE DRIVING SLOW

WE know that electric cars and hybrids can be so quiet that other road users, such as cyclists and pedestrians, are not aware of them and risk a collision. And, as you probably know, from Monday, all new electric vehicles have to have a noise-emitting device to let other people know they are around. The EU rule comes amid fears for safety of other road users. The compulsory new acoustic vehicle alert system (AVAS for short) will generate a sound like a conventional engine. AVAS has to be activated when a car/van reverses or is travelling under 19kmh. Drivers can deactivate the system if deemed necessary. However, there is another side to this story. How about the cyclists and pedestrians who wouldn't hear a steamroller coming because they are plugged in, via headphones, to a different world? What can be done about them? In the past week, I've had the frightening experience of seeing a middle-aged, ear-phoned man step straight out in front of me without as much as a fleeting look. Luckily some instinct told me to brake in time. I was driving a "noisy" diesel. Of course I'll be criticised for having a go at non-car road users. But maybe it is time for the safety authorities to highlight this issue as a danger to life and limb as well? (Eddie Cinningham, Indo Motoring )

EVERYTHING’S COMING UP ROSES!

TALKING SPORT WITH THE TRALEE ADVERTISER

with “The Voice” Pat Harnett

FAI NATIONAl P.R.O. OF THE YEAR FIRST TRALEE ADVERTISER JULY 2019 TO RUSSIA WITH HOPE: From Russia with Love is a James Bond film. But for a group of athletes it’s to Russia with Hope. Seventeen young Kerry athletes are all set and ready to fly to Moscow and Ufa to represent Tralee ICG at this year’s International Children’s Games and Cultural Festival, which will be held in Ufa from July 9th to 15th. Ufa is the capitol city of the Republic of Baskortostan, close to the Ural Mountains and the country of Kazakhstan, and has previously hosted the ICG Winter Games in 2013. Tralee’s preparations for the Games have been ongoing since team selections were finalised for Soccer, Judo and Track and Field in February. Monthly meetings were held to facilitate the necessary arrangements: athlete and coach registration with Ufa; visa applications and collection for the travelling party of 40 with the Consular Section of the Russian Embassy in Dublin; travel and accommodation arrangements through Slattery’s Travel; measurement and order of tracksuits and playing gear for coaches and athletes; fund raising activities such as raffle ticket sales, bag packing and help from various sponsors; and team preparations for the past 4 weeks or so. “It has been an all-out committed effort by parents, coaches and athletes over the past few months and the work undertaken is now about to bear fruit, as we make final arrangements for the journey to Moscow and Ufa for the Games” according to Tralee ICG chairman, Mike Culloty. In total the Tralee delegation will consist of 17 athletes, 4 coaches, 2 delegates, and a travelling support party of 17 family members. “It really is fantastic that so many are making the effort and sacrifice necessary to lend their support to the team in Ufa and we look forward to their voices on the sidelines and in the sports halls at the Games” said Mike. “Of course we would be nowhere without the continuing levels of support from members of the local community, through our raffle sales, bag packs and willing sponsors. We are all truly grateful for this support”. The Ufa Games will have over 1300 athletes competing at the Games, representing 90 cities from 35 countries worldwide.

Five athletes will compete in Track and Field in the 100m, 400m, 800m, Long Jump, High Jump and Shot Putt while a team of 3 boys and 1 girl will take on the might of Holland and the Ukraine on the judo mat. Tralee ICG were delighted when the hugely successful financial services company Fexco came on board as a sponsor and the committee and athletes are very grateful for the support. THE TRALEE TEAMS AND COACHES FOR UFA ARE: JUDO TEAM: Jack Costello, Firies: Stephen Palmer, Firies: Kristin Lyne, Ardfert: Donna Rodgers, Tralee with Danny Roche as the Coach. They will be coached by Robin O’Day with John Byrne as Assistant Coach. The team travelling to Russia will have the vastly experienced Paula Henry as their Head of Delegation. The Tralee ICG held a very successful fundraising raffle and the lucky winners were: Liz Kennelly, Ballyspillane (€500 Shopping Voucher), Sabhdh Horgan, Ardfert (GAA Final tickets), Molly Young, New Road, Killarney (FAI Match tickets), Robert Lyne, Ardfert (Weekend x 2 Rose Hotel),Stacey Scannell, Tralee (Tablet),Catriona Ross, Ballyduff (Weekend x 2 Ballyroe Heights Hotel). Tralee ICG wishes to thank everyone who supported the Raffle Ticket Sales THE IRELAND UNDER 18 BASKETBALL TEAM ARE IN TRALEE THIS WEEKEND: The Irish basketball team are coming to Kerry for a four day camp in preparation for the forthcoming European Basketball Championships in Romania which are taking place later this month. Friday 5th July 2019

The squad features three local Kerry players who are members of the Garveys Tralee Warriors squad Rap Buivydas, Dáire Kennelly and Leeroy Odiahi. International Coaches Paul Kelleher and Ciarán O’Sullivan and the Irish squad will be holding a Coaching and Skills session at the Kerry Sports Academy on Friday 5th July from 10am to 1pm for young Kerry basketballers (7 -15 year olds) and on Friday evening The Irish U18 team are taking on the Garvey’s Tralee Warriors at Tralee Sports Centre with a 7.45 tip off. Coach Kelleher is also inviting local coaches to attend one of the Ireland sessions on Thursday evening 6-9pm at Mercy Mounthawk Secondary School We are looking forward to our trip to Kerry and are delighted with the support we are getting from The Tralee Warriors, IT Tralee, Mercy Mounthawk Secondary School and Tralee Sports Centre. . Roy & Eleanor Bowler of Sandy Feet Pet Farm in Camp, Co Kerry along with Frank & Honest Coffee have come on board as one of our main sponsors for our European Championships and the squad are looking forward to visiting Sandy Feet while we are down in Kerry. NO LUCK FOR THE IRISH 3X3 BASKETBALL SIDE: There was no luck for the Irish Men’s 3X3 team in the Men’s Europa Cup qualifiers. They went down to hosts Romania, Spain and Belgium. There was plenty of Kerry interest in the team with new Killorglin Coach Colin O’Reilly in charge and ex Tralee Warrior and now Sante Fe player Ryan Leonard on the team. U18 WOMEN IN MACEDONIA Staying with basketball and the Irish Women’s u18’s team are in FIBA Women’s European Championship Division B action this weekend with South Kerry’s Siofra O’Shea on the squad. They will play the hosts, Romania, Greece, Slovakia and Austria over the next number of days. GOOD WEEK ON THE BIKE FOR KERRY RIDERS: Kerry teenager Tom Moriarty who rides for the O’Leary Stone Kanturk team won an amazing 6th National title in a row at the weekend. He is unbeaten in all the age groups since his first win at 12 years of age. While Tom was always in the picture to be a front runner as a first year junior it was always going to be a tough ask. But Tom powered up the hill with 3 riders and powered over the line ahead of Archie Ryan (Zappi) and Kevin McCambridge (Chill NRPT). Another young Kerry rider was also celebrating this week. Beaufort’s Patrick Galvin was named on the Irish Youth Team that will take part in the Errigal International Youth

Tour over the August weekend. TRALEE RIDER CATHAL MOYNIHAN TAKES THE LATEST ROUND OF THE ROAD RACE LEAGUE: Round 3 of the Road Race League has been won by Cathal Moynihan with the Tralee Manor West rider finishing just ahead of Killarney’s Marcus Tracey and Hugo Duboc a guest rider from France. The underage races were won by Newcastlewests Diarmuid Collins at u12’s ahead of Killarney CC’s Cathal Larkin and SlIabh Luachra’s Kate Murphy. Killarney CC rider Shane Galvin and Louis Steadman took the top two spots in the u14’s race with Sliabh Luachra’s Dinny Murphy in third place. Killarney CC also dominated the u16’s with Lorcan Daly, Stefan Caulfield Drier and Adam Lenihan filling the top 3 places. AT THE TRACK: Before this week’s notes on the action at the Kingdom Greyhound Stadium I think it is important to mention the expose by RTE Investigates on the greyhound industry. A lot of what was shown on the programme was very hard to watch and damning on part of the sport. The missing numbers of pups, what happens to those that don’t make the grade and then those that are past their prime are some of the questions that the industry has to answer. The fall-out has seen a number of high profile sponsors pulling out their support of the sport and this cannot be good for those who do everything right. There are a lot of people who depend on the sport for their income as well as the tracks and all that they mean for the towns where they are based. The fact the greyhound industry – probably using the word industry instead of sport is part of the problem – is under the auspices of the Department of Agriculture and not minister for Sport. Now while I have my issues with that department – or the Minister! – and Sport Ireland there is no doubt they would have a greater oversight on those involved. I have been to the track on a number of occasions and know some of those involved. I am certainly no expert in the sport or have no great knowledge of greyhound racing but those that I know are genuine people and I would say give their dogs the treatment that they deserve. People like Murt Murphy and Declan Dowling who I do know and obviously have a great interest in the sport are very good people who would not tolerate any abuse of greyhounds. But the sport is in a tough place and to be honest the silence of those in charge does not look well. If more sponsors start to pull their support things could get very serious. Those in charge of the greyhound industry need to show they are rooting out anyone who

TALKING SPORT WITH THE TRALEE ADVERTISER treats their dogs with less respect than they deserve, be transparent on the numbers of dogs born and where they all end up and what happens to the dogs as they get older. Maybe then confidence can be re-built and sponsors return or stay with the sport. If they can’t do this then the future of the sport could be in serious doubt. AT THE TRACK: This Friday night at the Kingdom Greyhound Stadium racing starts off at 7.42 with 10 races on the card. The feature is the semi-finals of the Tilemaster Kingdom Derby plus the semi-finals of the Garvey’ Supervalu A1 525 yards Hospital stake. On Saturday night it’s the semifinals of the Kerry Group Hospital stake plus the semi-finals of the Fealesbridge Co-Op A7 525 yards starting at 7.45pm. On Sunday night there is an 8 race program starting at 6.35pm. TOUGH DAY AT THE CREASE FOR KERRY CRICKETERS: It was another tough weekend for Kerry’s cricketing sides. Cork 1st put up a huge total of 307 which the Kerry firsts made only a small dent in before being all out. In Munster Division 1 action the Kerry 2nds were well beaten by Midleton 1st who hit 224. Kerry were all out for 60. This Saturday in Munster Division 3 County Kerry 4 take on Cork Harlequins 4 at the Oyster Oval. On Sunday in the Premier Division County Kerry 1 play County Galway 1 at the same venue. KERRY ATHLETES SHINE: There was lots of success for Kerry athletes at the Irish Life Health Juvenile Games in Tullamore and at the Munster B Track and Field Championships in Ennis. Amongst the Kerry clubs winning medals were the St Brendan’s and Tralee Harriers clubs. KERRY PLAYER ON WOMEN’S 7S The Irish Women’s squad are in France this week for the Rugby Europe 7s Grand Prix. On the 13 player squad is Kerry’s Louise Galvin. This serves are a seeding tournament for the European Olympic qualifier which takes place next week in Kazan Russia. BIG WIN FOR PAUL: Paul Nagle was on the notes for Waterford’s Craig Breen as the duo won the prestigious Ypres International Rally in Belgium in their VW Polo WRC. The duo have been signed by Hyundai to take part in Rally Finland as many expect them to be given a contract for the Championship next season. In the Raven’s Rock Rally Tralee’s Eoin Duffin had Mike Quinn on the notes and they took 26th overall in their Ford Escort. Killarney’s Colin O’Donoghue was the winner of the

Junior section of the rally based in Waterford. SUPER TIES IN THE SUPER 8’S: Kerry’s route to the All Ireland semi-final will be fully known after the final round of qualifiers. The Kingdom will meet the winner of the eagerly awaited Connaught derby when Mayo and Galway meet this weekend. This game will take place in Killarney on Sunday July 14th at 4pm which should see a huge crowd in town. The afternoon kick-off is an ideal time for a game in Killarney. The following Sunday it’s another 4pm throw-in as two green and gold sides head to Croke Park. Kerry and Donegal will be the second game on the day with the opener being the game between Galway or Mayo versus Meath of Clare. The final game will see Kerry on the road again as they will be away to either Meath or Clare on the August weekend. The home game against Galway or Mayo is a vital one as a win here means the will have two chances of making the last 4. However if they lose to whichever of the Western sides then they will have to beat Donegal in Croke Park and that could be a tough ask. However from a Kerry point of view they will be eagerly looking forward to the Super 8s and will be perfectly prepared. The wont be too worried about what the pundits think of their chances and the only pressure they are under is what they put on themselves. If they do make the Last 4 then added to the League final and Munster title it will have to be seen as a good year for a new young team under new management. JUNIORS TO PROGRESS: The Kerry Juniors win over Cork in the Munster decider has set up a clash with Scotland in Clydebank, Glasgow in the All Ireland semifinal. It is a long journey for the Juniors are they are travelling by road and ferry from Larne. However without taking their opponents for granted Kerry should be good enough to progress to the decider. BIG WIN FOR KERRY CAMOGIE TEAM OVER LIMERICK: In the opening round of the All Ireland Premier Junior camogie championship Kerry travelled to Croagh-Kilfinny to face Limerick and came home with a very satisfying win. Even a goal by their hosts in injury time in the first half which saw Limerick lead 1-4 to 0-05 at the break did not upset the Kerry side. Kerry pushed on and with Patrice Diggin unerring from frees hitting 7 of her 8 points, they took the win 0-11 to 1-5 in a wi set up by a very strong defensive display by the Kerry girls. They are at home to Wicklow in the next round this weekend. The game throws in in Abbeydorney at 3pm on Saturday.

The Kerry U16 Camogie Team fought back to earn a draw against Mayo at Hermitage Park, Lixnaw on Sunday afternoon. The final score was Kerry 1-14 Mayo 2-11. Mayo had led by 2-8 to 1-6 at halftime. They travel to Wicklow this Sunday with the game in Greystones on Sunday at 2.30pm. Kerry win Celtic Challenge: There was success for the Kerry u17 hurlers as they took the John Scott Cup for the Celtic Challenge defeating Dublin Clarke 5-16 to 4-15. To the joy of the Kerry manager John Hennessy the Kerry players came from 9 points down to win by 4. ROAD TO KERRY HURLING GLORY BEGINS: With the inter county season over for the Kerry hurlers the players are now back with their clubs for the always eagerly awaited Garvey’s County Senior Hurling Championship. All eight sides will have high hopes as the action begins with two double headers at Austin Stack Park this weekend. As always due to my North Kerry heritage I will be cheering for Lixnaw. They are first in action this Saturday July 6th as they face Ballyheigue at 5pm. This is followed by Abbeydorney versus St Brendan’s at 7pm. Onto Sunday and the opening game is Ballyduff against Crotta O’Neill at 1.30pm with Causeway taking on Kilmoyley at 3.30pm. PARNELLS NEWS: The club was represented by 20 players at the Munster Camogie Summmer Club 7’s that took place in Na Piarsaigh GAA Club in Caherdavin last Saturday. The girls took on Nemo Rangers, Monaleen, Shannon Rangers, Newtownshandrum and the hosts in a very enjoyable day for the girls. The club thanks al the coaches and mentors for all their hard work at this tournament and some good connections were made. Hopefully friendly games against the likes of Kilkee and Tournafulla can be arranged in the coming months. The club congratulates the members of the Kerry u17 hurlers who won the Celtic Challenge with the club represented by Jonathan Lowe, Tadgh Reen, Naill Cassidy and Ollie Broughton on the coaching staff. The clubs Summer Camp takes place from Monday July 15th for players aged 6 to 14. Prices and discounts are on the clubs website. The club’s u8’s and u10’s camogie players took part in the Blitz in Kilmoyley on Saturday where some great skills were on show. The minors were down a number of players when they were defeated by Ballyduff. There was also disappointment for the Intermediate Men in the latest round of the County League. They went down to Abbeydorney who they will also play in the preliminary round of the Championship in a few weeks.

Friday 5th July 2019

ST PAT’S NEWS: There was no winner of the Lotto from the numbers drawn 18,20,26 and 29 and the next jackpot will be e6,600 with the draw in O’Dwyers Bar this Sunday night. In the Juvenile Academy there was another great turn-out at all the ages. They will all train again this Sunday from 10.30am. The u10’s will welcome Milltown this Sunday. This week will be the second last session before a break for the Cul Camp with some places still available. Last week Chloe was named as the Player of the Week. The u14 Girls are set to play Castlegregory in the final of the County League Division 5 this Sunday. The u14 boys were defeated by a strong Laune Rangers side in Round 2 of the Central Region competition. They were also due to play Stacks B at home in mid-week. The u16 Boys went down to Tarbert in Blennerville in Round 1 Division 8 of the County League. The Juniors are in action tonight Friday July 5th when they travel to Gallarus to face An Ghaeltacht. In Division 3 of the County League the team went down by 4 points away to Milltown/Castleimaine 1-12 to 0-11. The goal came in the first half with the home side leading 1-04 to 0-06 at the break. The club’s Cul Camp takes place between August 5th to 9th from 10am to 2.30pm and all the details are available from the clubs various media sources. ON THE GREENS: PITCH & PUTT NEWS Saturday evening saw the Kerry U-16 Strokeplay Championships played in Listowel where 32 from the host club and Deerpark in Killarney took part as bar the overall prize, the rest of the prizes went to the Killarney club. Jake Shine led the way as last year’s U-16 Matchplay winner won the Overall title with a score of eight under par, three clear of Robbie Harnett of Deerpark on five under. The 13-15 section was won by Eoin O’Riordan Looney on three under par, one clear of his Deerpark clubmate Jack O’Sullivan on two under as Joey McCarthy won the 10-12 section with five over par, two clear of Noah Sexton of Deerpark who claimed second on a better back 18 from Jayden Chute of the host club. The event was the second trial for the Kerry U-16 Inter-County teams with the third trial due in Listowel on Thursday July 11th. This weekend sees the U-16’s head for St Annes in Cork where the Munster Matchplay Championships for the youngsters will be decided. CASTLEISLAND GC: In Castleisland the 9 hole Senior competition was won by William Galvin with Michael Moloney in second and Jim Crowley in third. There was a Captains Charity Day for St John of Gods and the winner was Sean Connell with Andrew Fitzpatrick in second and Con Murphy in third.
