‘Time To Play!’ At Kerry’s National Play Day Events

From Saturday, 13th July to Saturday, 20th July, a series of free events will be held at Kerry Library to celebrate National Play Day.

National Play Day is an annual initiative of the Department of Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth whereby local authorities are supported to deliver a programme of themed activity that promotes play and recreation opportunities for children and young people across the country.

By linking in with Kerry County Council’s services, partnerships and programmes, Healthy Kerry, Kerry Library and Kerry Recreation and Sports Partnership have put together an exciting suite of free play events for children. The programme was launched today by the Cathaoirleach of Kerry County Council, Cllr Breandán Fitzgerald.

“Allowing time to play for children at every age is crucial for their development. When children have the time and space to play without restriction, their imaginations can soar. Children are happiest and at their most vital and energetic when they play,” said Healthy Kerry Coordinator, Deirdre Hegarty.

“Given that play is so important for children’s development and overall happiness, Kerry County Council are delighted to offer a variety of free play workshops through our library services for National Play Day”.

Cahersiveen, Killarney, Listowel, Killorglin and Tralee libraries will host a variety of free play events and workshops to celebrate National Play Day including LEGO, sensory construction playtime, STEM Toys playtime and Irish myths and legends themed arts and crafts.

From Saturday, 13th July to Saturday, 20th July, a series of free events will be held at Kerry Library to celebrate National Play Day. Pictured were: Deirdre Hegarty (Healthy Kerry Coordinator), Niamh Doyle (Executive Librarian Kerry County Library), Mayor of Kerry Councillor Breandán Fitzgerald, and Gearóid O’Doherty (Coordinator Kerry Recreation & Sports Partnership). Maeve Ryan of Kerry Recreation and Sports Partnership said: “We are delighted to partner with Healthy Kerry and Kerry library on this

fantastic initiative to highlight the importance of play for children, not only for their learning development but their physical development and well-being too”.

Niamh Doyle from Kerry Library said, “Play is essential to help children

to learn, explore, and make sense of the world around them. We’re delighted to support this initiative in our libraries.”

Community Unity in the Kingdom for Pride

The award-winning Kingdom Pride in Kerry festival is back this July, in towns all across the county from July 17th to 21st.

The organisation’s flagship Party in the Park event will be taking place again in Killarney House and Gardens, directly following the Pride march in Killarney town on Saturday 20th July. This year, in solidarity with the people of Palestine, Kingdom Pride in Kerry is inviting the people of Kerry to come show their unity by bringing Palestinian flags and kites to the march, and to the party in the

park. Daniel Quirke, chairperson of the volunteer Pride organisation, said ‘Pride is a protest for human rights all over the world. Here in the Kingdom we have been so lucky to receive tremendous community support from our allies and supporters, and we see the struggle for liberation of all peoples as a united cause. Our events have always welcomed everyone, regardless of gender, orientation, religion, or nationality. We truly believe that together we can create positive change through caring for and loving one another.

This year is no exception, and we look forward to helping to highlight the Palestinian cause, and to bringing people together to keep generating positive change for all people’ Events will be taking place in Cahersiveen, Listowel, Killorglin, Tralee, Killarney and Dingle, and include a guerilla Irish comedy night with Áine Gallagher, an Irish-language movie screening, yoga, sea swimming, poetry and storytelling, bowling, pitch and putt, a lively drag night at the INEC, and plenty more for people of all ages. Daniel also noted

‘we do our best to keep tickets as low-cost as possible, and we have lots of events that are totally free to attend. It is important to us that people can share Pride with us, regardless of income. Especially with the rise of the cost of living putting a strain on peoples’ pockets.’ Tickets to all events are available through the Kingdom Pride website, and information on all events can be found through the social media pages @thekingdompride .

Near 200 Ukrainians in Tralee gathered for a peaceful protest after Russia attacked a children’s hospital.

On the 10th of July 2024 a peaceful protest by Ukrainians living in Kerry took place in the central square in Tralee. The protest is dedicated to the memory of those children and adults who died in a rocket attack on the 8th of July, which destroyed the county’s largest Children’s Hospital in Ukraine. 33 people, including children, where killed in Kyiv last Monday, June 8. The largest children’s hospital, Ohmadyt, a maternity hospital and a civilian building were intentionally destroyed by Russian missile attacks. On the same day, russia attacked other cities in Ukraine: Dnipro, Zaporizhzhia, Kharkiv, and Kryvyi Rih.

This action aimed to remind the media, authorities, and local residents that the war in Ukraine is still ongoing and that innocent

Ukrainian children are dying from rocket attacks on hospitals and residential buildings.

During the peaceful protest, 200 ukrainians demanded urgently needed air defence systems to protect against rocket attacks, which target children’s hospitals, residential buildings, and power plants that power entire cities.

Ukrainians reminded that the russian embassy in Ireland still works and demanded the russian ambassador’s expulsion.

“We are talking about children’s hospital attack because of its striking cruelty. But such stories happen in Ukraine every day. Ukraine urgently needs air defence systems to protect itself. We believe that the air defence

The Think Before You Flush campaign collaborates with Kerry County Council to protect Blue Flag beaches

In 2023, the Think Before You Flush campaign partnered with Kerry County Council and the Blue Flag programme to educate beachgoers on proper flushing etiquette at public toilets. This collaboration aims to maintain Ireland’s pristine Blue Flag beaches and marinas by preventing sewage pollution.

The Think Before You Flush campaign, run by Clean Coasts in partnership with Uisce Éireann, highlights the importance of flushing only the 3 Ps: pee, poo, and paper. Items like wipes and sanitary products, even if labeled flushable, should be disposed of in bins to avoid blockages in wastewater systems. Such blockages can lead to sewage overflows that pollute rivers, lakes, beaches, and coastlines.

Kerry County Council is committed to spreading awareness about the campaign and promoting responsible waste disposal practices.

The council displays Think Before You Flush signage at Blue Flag beaches and marinas, providing clear instructions on proper

flushing behavior and highlighting commonly misflushed items. Visitors are encouraged to use designated sanitary waste bins to keep beaches clean.

Bronagh Moore, Coastal Communities Manager at Clean Coasts, praised the collaborative efforts: “It’s fantastic to see Kerry County Council supporting the Think Before You Flush campaign. This collaboration between councils and environmental programmes is crucial in safeguarding our Blue Flag beaches. Their efforts and ongoing commitment to protecting our coastlines will help ensure vibrant ecosystems for future generations to enjoy.”

Sean Corrigan of Uisce Éireann emphasized the importance of this partnership: “By partnering with Clean Coasts and Uisce Éireann’s Think Before You Flush campaign, Kerry County Council aims to foster a culture of environmental responsibility. The success of this campaign hinges on the participation and support of Kerry’s

Small margins mean Kerry took no points from Finn Harps

Kerry FC undertook the 820km round trip to Ballybofey on Thursday night to face Finn Harps, currently fifth in the league. The journey, challenging on any day, was particularly tough given the Thursday night schedule, which contrasted with the usual Friday night slot. Due to work commitments, a somewhat depleted Kerry squad traveled but still put up a strong fight. The match kicked off in the summer sunshine of Donegal, with an open first quarter. Kerry’s Sean McGrath had an early effort from outside the box saved by Harps’ goalkeeper Oliver-Hiemer, while Ryan Kelliher’s overhead attempt went wide. Kerry’s goalkeeper, Aaron O’Sullivan, made several crucial saves, notably denying Ferry after a well-placed through ball in the 17th minute. Kerry came close to scoring when Ronan Teahan’s 30-yard shot hit the post with the keeper beaten. However, in the 36th minute, Harps took the lead. A Kerry FC ball into the box was well-defended, leading to a counter-attack that saw Patton score, putting the hosts ahead 1-0 at halftime.

The second half mirrored the first, with O’Sullivan making impressive saves to keep Kerry in contention. Despite Harps’ opportunities, including a near-miss by McAteer, Kerry had a chance to equalize late in the game. Daniel Okwute’s effort, however, went wide.

Post-match, the game ended on a sour note with the referee issuing three red cards: Conor McCarthy, Kennedy Amechi, and Finn Harps coach McHugh. Kerry FC suffered a narrow defeat on the road. They will host Bray Wanderers at Mounthawk Park next Friday night.

stakeholders, including the public, beachgoers, residents, and tourists alike. The hard work and positivity of everyone involved is inspiring to see.”

This summer, we urge all water lovers to support the Local Authorities and the Think Before You Flush campaign. Small changes

in our habits can lead to significant environmental benefits. Let’s upgrade our flushing habits and protect our marine environments together! Learn more at Think Before You Flush..ie

IT’S ONLY A JOKE

MY WIFE JUST GOT OUT OF THE BATH AND WAS WRAPPED IN A TOWEL WHEN SHE HEARD A KNOCK

She went down to the door in her towel. She opened it to our neighbour, Bob. Bob looks at her, and quickly says, “Look this might be weird but ill give you €800 if you drop the towel right now. She proceeds to drop the towel, exposing herself to Bob. Bob hands here the 800 euros and walks away.

My wife comes upstairs. I asked her, Hey, who was at the door?

“Oh, just our neighbor Bob.” She says. I say, “Oh damn, where’d he go? Does he have the €800 he owes me?”

A RESOURCEFUL WOMAN...

A woman gets into a very busy restaurant around lunch time. She is told the next available table would be free in an hour. She holds her phone to her ear, and with a loud voice says: “Honey, you won’t believe it, but your husband is having lunch with his girlfriend at so-and-so restaurant” Half the diners instantly get up and rush to the exit..

THE TOILET BRUSH

A man walks into a store looking for a toilet brush. The store owner shows him a variety of brushes at various pricepoints. The man thinks for a little while, then buys the cheapest one.

The next day the man is back at the store. “Were you unhappy with your purchase?” asks the shopkeeper. “We have other models that might work better.”

The man agrees and buys a little more expensive one.

The next day the man is back yet again. The shopkeeper, visually puzzled on how a toilet brush can be such a big deal, asks “What’s the matter, didn’t like the new one either?”

“Well” replies the man. “To be honest it was pretty effective. But I gotta say, I prefer toilet paper!”

3 MEN ARE STRANDED ON AN ISLAND.

3 men are stranded on an island and they find a genie bottle. They decide that each person gets one wish. The first man says “I wish I was back home.” then disappeared. The second man says “I wish I was off this island!” and he was gone. The third man say “I wish my friends were back.”

WASHINGTON D.C. WAS IN COMPLETE GRIDLOCK...

As I stewed in traffic wondering what was causing it, a guy comes up and knocks on my window. “What’s it all about?” I ask. “You haven’t heard? President Trump has been kidnapped. It’s all over the news! The ransom note says we either deliver a billion dollars or they are going to cover him with gas and burn him alive. I’m out here taking up a collection to help.” “Oh, God.” I said. “Of course I’m willing to help. Anything. How much have you got so far?” “About six gallons.” He said.

A STRANGER WAS SEATED NEXT TO LITTLE JOHNNY ON THE PLANE

When the stranger turned to the Little Johnny and said, “Let’s talk. I’ve heard that flights will go quicker if you strike up a conversation with your fellow passenger.”

Little Johnny, who had just opened his book, closed it slowly, and said to the stranger, “What would you like to discuss?”

“Oh, I don’t know,” said the stranger. “How about nuclear power?”

“OK,” said Little Johnny. “That could be an interesting topic, but let me ask you a question first. A horse, a cow, and a deer all eat grass. The same stuff. Yet a deer excretes little pellets, while a cow turns out a flat patty, and a horse produces clumps of dried grass. Why do you suppose that is?”

“What? I have no idea” said the stranger. “Well, then,” said Little Johnny, “How is it that you feel qualified to discuss nuclear power when you don’t know squat?”

Four Kerry ladies cycled the ‘ Ring’ together for a cause very close to their hearts

Starting and finishing the Ring of Kerry Cycling Challenge together to celebrate two family members transplants were four Kerry ladies Edel Lehane from Gneeveguilla, Sinead Kelleher, Karina Kelleher and Karina’s daughter Eve Moynihan, from Rathmore. They were raising funds for the Irish Kidney

Association as their families were impacted by kidney disease. John Paul Lehane received a kidney donated by his brother in 2018 and they are grateful to the family of the deceased donor for the kidney transplant Donal Kelleher underwent in June last year. After crossing the finish line together, Edel Lehane, said

“We are delighted, it’s been a great day. The four of us stuck together as a team and friends all the way. We supported each other up and down the hills and on the hardest climbs what kept us going was thinking of how much tougher it is for all those people in organ failure and their families, so we pushed through. The

Irish Kidney Association has been very good to our family and have always supported us so it’s nice to be able to do this for the charity to help other families of patients like my husband John Paul and Donal also.”https://www.idonate.ie/ fundraiser/EveMoynihan618

Lack of penalty points enforcement on worn tyres!

Penalty-point offences for dangerous or defective tyres are not being enforced, claims Tom Dennigan of Continental Tyres Ireland. A review of the data shows that while hundreds of thousands of license-holders have been penalized for speeding or mobile phone use, tyre-related penalty points are “barely in the hundreds.”

Mr. Dennigan collaborates closely with road safety organizations to reduce incidents caused by poor tyre conditions. He believes that dangerous tyres contribute significantly to accidents and calls for stricter enforcement of the penaltypoint system to improve road safety. He questions, “Has any motorist in Ireland ever seen a roadside garda checkpoint assessing the state of tyres on vehicles?” He asserts that penalty-point offences for dangerous or defective tyres are not being enforced.

When contacted, the Garda Press Office declined to comment on the

matter. Statistics for fixed-charge penalty notices for tyre-related offences show 1,967 issued in 2022, 1,839 in 2023, and 1,029 so far this year.

Surveys indicate that many motorists neglect their tyres, with some studies finding that one-ineight drivers never check their tyres.

Despite efforts over the past decade to improve tyre care and safety, including the introduction of tyre-related penalty points in 2016 and a “dangerous fault” classification in the National Car Test (NCT), negligence remains high.

AI speed cameras which can ‘spy inside’ cars are set to be rolled out nationwide in the UK

AI speed cameras capable of monitoring drivers inside their vehicles will soon be implemented across the UK to catch motorists using mobile phones or failing to wear seatbelts. The new technology enables police to address both distracted driving and speeding. Research from the Department for Transport indicates that up to 400,000 British drivers still use handheld devices illegally while driving. Despite the safety benefits, privacy campaigners have criticized the technology as “intrusive and creepy,” arguing that it treats everyone as a suspect.

The high-tech cameras capture two images of drivers: one at a shallow angle to check for phones at their ear and another at a steep angle to detect devices on their lap. AI software analyzes the images to identify violations, and if a driver is caught using a mobile phone or not wearing a seatbelt, the information is sent to the police for potential prosecution.

The trial, conducted with National Highways, involves police forces from Durham, Greater Manchester,

Thames Valley, Sussex, and Warwickshire. To address privacy concerns, authorities claim the images are anonymized to remove identifying features such as the number plate, passengers, or vehicle make. Identifying details are only

retrieved if prosecution occurs. However, privacy groups remain dissatisfied. Jake Hurfurt of Big Brother Watch told the Daily Telegraph: “Unproven AI-powered video analytics should not be used to monitor and potentially

criminalize drivers. This kind of intrusive surveillance, which treats every passer-by as a potential suspect, is excessive and poses a threat to everyone’s privacy.” 4o
