Banna Coastcare Group wins first place in the Big Beach Clean Awards category Over the past two weeks Clean Coasts have honoured winning groups, individuals, communities and businesses who have won an Ocean Hero Award for outstanding work and commitment to their coastlines and areas. Each year, the Ocean Hero Awards honour the invaluable contribution Clean Coasts volunteers, groups and communities have made towards conserving our spectacular coastline. The awards, originally called the ‘Clean Coasts Merit Awards’, were conceived in 2006. It has been an unusual year, and, like everyone, Clean Coasts and their volunteers have had to adapt. The continued support, engagement, and interest from the many Clean Coasts volunteers around the country has been outstanding, showing dedication and resilience through these

testing times. Banna Beach Coast Care Group from County Kerry took home first place in the Big Beach Clean Award category for Ocean Hero 2021. The category celebrates the groups who did incredible work over Clean Coasts’ annual Big Beach Clean weekend by hosting their own clean-up events. When talking about their group and their Big Beach Clean event they said: “The group started out mostly with friends and family in the first year, then a few volunteers from other groups joined and have continued coming to all the clean ups over the years. We saw a fantastic turnout for this year’s Big Beach Clean where 67 volunteers gave up their time to help clean up Kerry's beautiful coastline. Approximately, 30 bags of litter were collected which were filled with marine litter.” This year in place of a traditional awards ceremony

Clean Coasts decided to do something a little bit different. They surprised the Kerry winners at Banna Coast Care with their very own Covid safe awards ceremony where they were presented with an Ocean

Enjoy Free Parking In Tralee Over Christmas! (Nov 29-Jan 2nd , for 2-4 hrs Daily in ALL Council Car Parks , Check signs for details)

Let’s ’Jingle Jolly On’ And Talk About Listening This Christmas The news was rather sad, where? Everywhere. The feeling of loss and joy being removed, circled conversations throughout passers by and gathering of neighbours and friends, social networking and the ears of children trying to make out the adult world that had been showing tension and distraction. Santa was not at all pleased with such allowances for fear to drive on and secure its company to almost anyone who would entertain it. Santa sends a letter through Chris & Colette to the people of Tralee and surrounding areas for the people to pass on to others. He has this to say. “My dear little ones, and I don’t just speak of children here... I want to speak to everyone who will listen. The North Pole is a wonderful magical supernatural place in which I dwell with all my elves and Mrs Precious Claus. We work hard all year to plan for Christmas and make sure time is met at every street that led to avenues, towns, cities, and countries. I will let you in on our secret to meet such demands (communication) Listening. Its good to talk its really really good to talk. It’s a different virtue completely to listen. Give the gift of listening this Christmas, this gift is not one of hearing sound alone. Ohh no!!! Listening consists of care, interest, time, compassion,

50

Friday 17th December 2021

courage, bravery, and gentle power”. This letter from Santa is at times strongly encouraged by God, such as Psalm 38: 13/14 BUT I HEAR NOTHING, AS THOUGH I WERE DEAF, AS THOUGH DUMB, SAYING NOT A WORD. I AM LIKE THE ONE WHO HEARING NOTHING, HAS NO SHARP ANSWER TO MAKE. This Christmas , offer the gift wrapped with such virtues to someone who is in deep need of

your presence. Allow for outrage, allow for humility, allow for vulnerability alongside violence. Be slow to sharpen your answer to any of these. The gift is in the silence of natural reaction. The power of not talking, however allowing another to speak. Mrs Precious Claus and my elves get my undivided attention when it comes to the nuts and bolts of our warehouses and reindeer carriages, the listing of presents. They get my heart when the tools are laid down and silence is needed while tears need shedding and laughter had. The seriousness

of attention to the human spirit is exceptionally important and exceptionally beautiful. I Sir Santa Claus, the 98th, join God, the supernatural Universe, and omnipresent brilliance of light , ask the people, the human, to listen to those who need listening to. Move on out of your heads and meet your best selves at heart. To the world its occupations, social, political, culture, race, identity, orientation, age, listen up and look up at someone else. When another is listened to and towards, they are heard they are valued they are important and the importance of their words falling on interested ears form a belief in self action and become a sentence that will lead to a paragraph of wanting to share and eventually a conversation of communication had. This year at the North Pole people wanting to be heard had been the most wanted gift on the list. It has flourished into dreams taking flight, floods of tears been released, forgiveness becoming a great friend. The truth of our LISTENING is we will and are all living as one. HUSH HUSH WHAT IS THAT? ARGGGHHH RELIEF AND PEACE”. God bless & Happy Christmas.

Enjoy Free Parking In Tralee Over Christmas! LAUGHTER (Nov 29-Jan....THE 2nd , for 2-4 hrsBEST Daily in ALL MEDICINE Council Car Parks , Check!signs for details)

HEY ITS CHRISTMAS TIME ...TIME FOR LAUGHTER! How much did Santa pay for his sleigh? Nothing – it was on the house.

What do donkeys send out near Christmas? Mule-tide greetings.

What did the snowman say to the aggressive carrot? “Get out of my face.”

A gingerbread man went to the doctor’s complaining of a sore knee. “A sore knee?” the doctor said. “Have you tried icing it?”

Last Christmas I bought my friend a lie detector as a gift. “Oh… I love it!” she said. “We’ll see,” I said.

How did the bauble know that she was addicted to Christmas?

She’d been hooked on Christmas trees all her life.

What do you get if you eat Christmas decorations? Tinsilitis.

What do you call a blind reindeer? No-eye deer.

What do you call a blind reindeer with no legs?

Why was the snowman embarrassed when he was spotted rummaging through a bag of carrots? He was caught picking his nose.

How did Scrooge win the football game? The Ghost of Christmas passed.

Why are mummies such big fans of Christmas? Because they enjoy wrapping.

I have this incredible ability to predict what’s inside a wrapped present. It’s a gift.

Why did Santa have to go to the hospital? Because of his poor elf.

Why are Christmas trees so bad at sewing? They’re always dropping their needles.

I got a Christmas card full of rice in the post today. I think it was from my Uncle Ben.

What does Santa do when his elves misbehave? He gives them the sack.

Know any funny Jokes? Share with us - send them to traleeadvertiser@gmail.com

Enjoy Free Parking In Tralee Over Christmas! TOR Q(NovU29-Jan IN G C A R S ! 2nd , for 2-4 hrs Daily in ALL Council Car Parks , Check signs for details) MADNESS: ON THE PHONE WHILE CROSSING ROAD

I know it’s a British survey, but its findings tally with what we see here. Certainly what I see. In the past 12 months, nearly a third of people admitted being on their phone while crossing the road. That increases to 80pc for 18- to 24-year-olds. Drivers were forced to brake heavily (in 23pc of incidents) or swerve (16pc) to avoid a pedestrian glued to their phone. The study, from Fiat, highlights how phone use is putting pedestrians and drivers at risk The survey involved 2,000 drivers and smartphone users.(Eddie Cunningham )

DRAWING ON THE FUTURE OF CARS

Children are being invited to draw their dream cars. As part of the ‘Dream Car Art’ contest, they are being asked to share ideas about the future of mobility by drawing their ideal vehicle. They have until February. Toyota Ireland is inviting children (up to 15 years of age) to join in. It will help “nurture the creativity of the next generation of great inventors, thinkers and dreamers”. The winner will represent Ireland in the World Contest in Japan.

I’m sorry, but I have to get this off my chest. I don’t understand why so many people feel the need to have a big SUV in densely populated parts of town.It is, of course, their prerogative to do so, but my goodness, they don’t half take up space on shrinking roads and parking spaces.I know I go on a lot about the latter two. Something tells me that, at some future juncture, people will have to pay more for the privilege of larger cars in urban settings. Just a hunch.(Eddie Cunningham Motoring Indo )

PEUGEOT ALL ELECTRIC IN EU BY 2030 !

Peugeot have announced that they will sell only electric new cars in Europe from 2030 onwards. The decision was confirmed to Automotive News Europe agency by the carmaker’s chief executive officer Linda Jackson. But the brand will continue to make internal combustion engines for markets other than the European one. The company’s switch to battery power will come later than some other manufacturers in the Stellantis group. DS Automobiles, for example, plans to switch in 2026 and the likes of Opel in 2028.

OK SIR, LET ME UPDATE YOUR CAR!

By 2024, most of all the new vehicles made under the umbrella of global giant Stellantis will be fully ‘updatable’ over the air. The Stellantis group now comprises Citroen, DS Automobiles, Fiat, Jeep, Maserati, Peugeot, Opel, Abarth and Alfa Romeo and is a major force in motoring. The prospect emerged as it announced that it will invest more than €30bn up to 2025 to pave the way for “software and electrification transformation”.

HONDA SAYS 'ZERO TRAFFIC FATALITIES ' BY 2050

Honda happens to be in the limelight recently because it set a goal of “zero traffic collision fatalities involving Honda motorcycles and automobiles globally by 2050”.Surely it is too much to expect? Pragmatists would agree.Honda doesn’t. It says it intends to strive for the target by using two key technologies. First is an artificial intelligence-powered Intelligent Driver-Assistive Technology. This would give assistance specially suited to the ability and situation of each person to reduce driving errors and risks. Result: a safer driver. The second is the Safe and Sound Network Technology. This connects all road users, people and mobile machines, via telecommunications. And that, they say, will make it possible to predict potential risks and help avoid incidents before collisions happen. The company this week held the world premiere of its advanced future safety technologies currently being developed so everyone sharing the road “will be free” from the risk of collisions. Some of the language is flowery and some of the aims are aspirational, but I mention it here to show why safety should be prioritised at all levels of society, especially governmental, above all the talk of electric cars and hydrogen and the price of energy. We should not, especially, have crude taxation imposed by our VRT system on driver aids, assists and safety elements in our new, safer cars. But we do. Shame on us.(Motoring Indo )

with “The Voice” Pat Harnett

FAI NATIONAl P.R.O. OF THE YEAR IT’S THE MOST WONDERFUL TIME OF THE YEAR IF YOUR TEAM HAS BEEN WINNING: As this is the final column of the year I want to wish everyone reading this a very Happy Christmas and a Wonderfully Sportingly successful New Year. This is the time of the year for looking back over the last 12 months, but in the case of 2021 many of those months were devoid of any sporting activity and we certainly hope we never go back to that. But thankfully we did get back to sport at a local, national and international level. While at the higher level there are plenty of paid administrators locally the vast majority at club and League level are volunteers. And all of these in every sport deserve great credit for the way they handled the COVID situation as do the parents and players. And also the supporters once they were allowed back in. Some of you reading this will have enjoyed a great few months as your team has been winning and some will have the opposite emotion but isn’t that why we love live sport. At one of the highest levels we saw this on Sunday when, depending on who you were a fan of – Lewis or Max, you were either cheering or roaring at the television. But once again it showed the unpredictability of live sport which is why we love watching it and being involved. With a few laps to go Lewis Hamilton was on the verge of becoming an eight time World Champion but with a safety car and a decision by the race director it became a last lap shoot-out and Max Verstappen, on brand new tyres, passed and held off the Mercedes driver to win his first ever F1 world title. At the time of writing there is still the possibility of an appeal but I can’t see it being overturned. And that brings us to the role of the sports administrator and it was not a good week in that line of work! Michael Masi was the Race Director for the F1 race in Abu Dhabi and how things transpired was his call. And again depending on which side of the debate you are on he was right or wrong! The other administrators who did not have a good week were those in charge of the UEFA Champions League draw. With only 16 teams in the draw it should be straight forward but then you have the added complications of certain teams can’t meet other teams. Anyway it ended up with it becoming a ‘balls-up’ and it had to be re-done. As anyone who has been involved in holding draws knows there is always the fear of things going wrong so even though those in UEFA have huge resources and staff numbers you still have to feel sorry for them as individuals. So as we enter into a New Year our wish is that no matter what area of

sport you are involved in 2022 is a great year for you and for your loved ones. No doubt there will be set-backs and disappointments but these make the good times even better. Here’s to a Wonderful 2022. THE YEAR’S NOT OVER YET: MUNSTER HOPES STILL ALIVE: Following on from the big win by Kilmoyley over Dunhill (1-12 to 2-07) they will face Cork’s Courcey Rovers in the Munster Intermediate Hurling Championship final in January. This Sunday Austin Stacks and Na Gaeil will be hoping to progress to their finals and continue their great years. Na Gaeil, and a huge number of their fans, are on the road in the AIB Munster Intermediate football semi-final this Sunday where they will take on Drom and Inch at 1.30pm in Templetuohy. Austin Stacks will be at home at the same time when Newcastlewest are the visitors to Austin Stack Park in the Munster Senior championship where the Black and Amber will be out in force. We wish both sides the best of luck and progression to the finals would be the perfect end to the year. Please note that no cash will be taken at these games and tickets must be bought on-line in advance. U16’s don’t need a ticket for this year’s Munster Club Championship. THREE ALL STARS FOR KERRY: From seven nominees including David Moran Kerry received three All Stars with brothers David and Paudie Clifford and Tom O’Sullivan being named on the team. KERRY HURLING TEAM OF THE CHAMPIONSHIP ANNOUNCED: The Kerry Hurling Team of the Championship and All Star have been announced. Spearheaded by Radio Kerry Sport commentator Mike O’Halloran, sponsored by Garvey’s Supervalu and after nominations from eight hurling experts Fionan Mackessy was named the Hurler of the Year and Nathan Guerin (Ballyheigue) the Young Player of the Championship. The Team of the Championship 2021 is: John B O’Halloran (Kilmoyley), Tommy Barrett (Causeway), Colman Savage (Kilmoyley), Evan Murphy (Causeway), Conor O’Keefe (Lixnaw), Dougie Fitzell (Kilmoyley), Darren Dineen (St Brendan’s), Fionan Mackessy (St Brendan’s), Paudie O’Connor (Kilmoyley), Padraig Boyle (Ballyduff), Daniel Collins (Kilmoyley), Jordan Brick (Kilmoyley), John Buckley (Lixnaw), Shane Conway (Lixnaw), Cian Hussey (St Brendan’s). WARRIORS SEMI-FINAL DATE: Garvey’s Tralee Warriors have unfinished business in basketball’s National Cup as they have gone out at the semi-final stage in recent years.

January 8th is D-Day as the Tralee boys will head to the Neptune Stadium to take on DBS Eanna in the Pat Duffy Cup last four. The game tips-off at 5pm with C&S Neptune and NUIG Maree meeting at 7pm in the other semi-final. The Warriors lost out to Belfast Star at the weekend 94-85 and will want to get back to winning ways this Saturday night when they take on UCD Marian. WARRIORS U20’S WIN: The Warriors u20 side continued their winning ways with a 102-51 win over Limerick Celtics. IMPERIALS GO DOWN NARROWLY IN CUP QUARTER FINAL: There was always going to be a Kerry side in basketball’s u20 National Cup final but disappointingly from a Tralee point of view it was KCYMS who go through as they defeated Imperials 89-83. WHEELBLASTERS DOWN SWIFTS: The Tralee Wheelblasters notched up a win in Round 2 of the IWA League defeating South East Swifts 42-29 in Cork led by Tadgh Buckley on 20 and Paul Ryan on 10. Cian Horgan with 8 and Dean McCarthy on 4 completed the scoring. They are also looking to progress in their Cup this weekend when they take on reigning champions Rebel Wheelers in the quarter final at 10am on Sunday in Glanmire. OCTOBER BANK HOLIDAY 2022 SORTED FOR MOTORSPORT FANS: MotorSport Ireland have confirmed their calendar for 2022 and it has been confirmed that the Kerry Motor Club will host the Banna Beach Kerry Winter Stages Rally on the October Bank Holiday Sunday. Under the new regulations certain rallies are only allowed to run every second year so the Circuit of Kerry Rally will not take place until 2023. WORLD TITLE FOR RICHARD: Staying with motorsport and Firies native Richard Browne is celebrating his third FIA World Rallycross title as a motorsport engineer. KINGDOM OF KERRY WINNERS: After the Banna Stages rally and the Killarney Historics, the two counting rounds of the Moriarty’s Centra Kingdom of Kerry Rally Series Mark Murphy and Shane Buckley have been declared the winners. In the Driver’s championship Mark’s cousin Aidan took second on count-back with Ray O’Neill third. As only Kerry natives or residents can win prizes in this series Denny Greany and Ger Conway take second and third in the co-drivers category. Alan Ring and Paul Nagle were the winning driver and co-driver in the Historic section. There was no Juvenile section this year. Prize giving is set for December 30th in the Anvil Bar but this has not been confirmed at this time. THE 12 SWIMS OF CHRISTMAS: As the Winter Turkey series comes to an end and the draw for those who have completed 4 swims in Fenit taking place this Sunday morning thoughts now turn to the 12 Swims of Christmas. The 12 Swims begin this Sunday and you have 16 days – up to Monday January 3rd to complete your quota. The challenge has gone from 4 completing the 12 swims the first year to almost 40 last Christmas. As with all

events all are welcome to swim or dip at their own risk and safety is paramount. CLUB NOTES: KERINS O’RAHILLYS NEWS- the club’s senior AGM will take place on Friday January 14th at 7pm with the format depending on COVID regulations at the time. Nominations are to be sent to Club Secretary Tony Corridon – secretary.kerinsorahillys.kerry@gaa.ie by 5pm on January 7th. Lotto- There was no winner of the Lotto from the numbers drawn 2, 7, 10 and 30 with the next jackpot being e2,900. PARNELLS NEWS: The social hurling continues for u9’s to u15’s each Saturday morning at the MTU Sports academy. The supervised sessions last one hour starting at 9am for the u9’s to u11’s and from 10am for the u12’s to u15’s. The GAA are looking for 12-21 olds to participate in a GAA/Unesco research project. Participants should record a conversation with an older person (55+) in their local GAA community who they look up to or admire. Those who take part will receive online training and a UNESCO/GAA certificate of participation. Recordings will be stored on the GAA’s eLearning platform and published as part of the GAA archive. Further info see http://gaa.ie/ generations STACKS NEWS: Austin Stacks young and no so young fans will be making their way through to town again this Sunday as they head for another important date with destiny at the Park. This poem sums up the feeling ahead of the game: “We’ll play the Champs of Limerick as Christmas comes around. They’ll come with guns a-blazing but we’ll challenge...pound for pound. Newcastle men are mighty men but The Rock is mighty too And the Champs of County Kerry will bid the Limerick boys adieu. We’ve got great talent in our team and subs who’ll play their part. They’ll hit the ground a-running...aye, they cannot wait to start! They’ll fight for every single ball....they’ll go through hell and back They’ll give their best, their mighty best, for the Amber and the Black”. NA GAEIL NOTES: Fans are making plans to get to Sunday’s big game and the clubs wants to see everyone, travelling or not, to have their colours on show this weekend. Flags and hats are for sale in Byrnes Spar. The club is hoping that everyone supports its annual Christmas Raffle, with three tickets costing only e5. They can be bought in the clubhouse and also at Monday night’s Bingo. Na Gaeilgoers walking / running group is back every Monday and Thursday evening at 7.30pm. All involved must be at Na Gaeil by 7.25pm and hi viz jackets are mandatory. The AGM will take on Thursday January 20th with nominations to the Secretary by December 30th. There was no winner of the Lotto from the numbers drawn 3,7, 10 and 28 and the next jackpot is e5,950.
