Medical Matters SUMMER TUMMY BUGS Dr David Buckley At this time of the year, it is not unusual to suffer from a stomach bug (gastroenteritis). This may occur because of poorly cooked meat on the barbeque or salads that have not been properly washed. The most common symptoms are poor appetite, nausea, vomiting, stomach cramps and/or diarrhoea.
For persistent diarrhoea an over the counter anti diarrhoea medication such as “Imodium” or “Lomotil” may help. While most stomach bugs will settle spontaneously in time, some people may have more severe or persistent symptoms that require assistance from your GP or perhaps even admission to the hospital for intravenous fluids.
The most important aspects of treating vomiting and/or diarrhoea are to keep well hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids and careful hand washing to The following are reasons why you might have to contact your GP prevent spread of the infection. The best fluids to drink are isotonic fluids which mean that the drink has the perfect balance of salts and electrolytes • Dehydration because of prolonged vomiting or diarrhoea which can cause dry mouth, not passing urine frequently, feeling weak, dizzy or to enable it to be absorbed quickly in the stomach. faint or feeling persistently thirsty. • A high fever with vomiting or diarrhoea. Examples of isotonic fluids include the following: • Blood in the vomit or blood in the stools (bloody poos) • “Dioralyte” sachets which can be diluted with water • Severe stomach pain or headache, not responding to simple • Isotonic Sports Drinks like “Lucozade” Sports” (not the sugary “Lucozade”) pain killers such as paracetamol. •Half fruit juice mixed with half water (50/50) • Vomiting or diarrhoea persisting for more than a few days. Try to avoid tea, coffee, “7Up”, “Coca Cola” and other fizzy drinks, as these Small children, the elderly and people with underlying illnesses such as usually make symptoms worse. If vomiting persists for more than 24 or 48 diabetes or heart disease are more prone to developing complications hours you may need an anti-nausea medication from your pharmacist or GP such as ”Motilium fastmelts” (which dissolve in the mouth) or “Motilium because of diarrhoea or vomiting and may need to see their GP earlier. suppositories” or perhaps even an anti-nausea injection from your GP.

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... Chamber forms Alliance with Tralee Garda SEE Something, Say Something, a new public service initiative for Kerry’s Capital, embracing the knowhow from local technology company ZinMobi and Text Republic, has been launched by Tralee Chamber Alliance in partnership with An Garda Síochána. The project, the first of its kind in Ireland, is for members of the public who See Something that might need Garda intervention, to Say Something by texting TRALEE and the
incident details to 50555. The FREE text message will be received by the sergeant on duty and it will be acted upon immediately by local Gardaí. The Managing Consultant for Tralee Chamber Alliance, Ken Tobin, said: “The findings of our recent brand-development survey confirmed that we all love Tralee and we are proud to live and work in Tralee. But sometimes, as is the case in every town in the world, there could be a small element who affect how we enjoy it. We want to send out a message that we won’t tolerate anything that impacts on our quality of life. So if you See Something, Say Something, text TRALEE and the incident details to 50555. Rather than assuming that someone else will report it, take out your phone, describe what you see and text the details for FREE to 50555.” Tralee Chamber Alliance has been working with ZinMobi, a Traleebased technology company, who have generously sponsored the development and delivery of the See Something, Say Something campaign. The Managing Director at Zinmobi
Sgt Tim O’Keeffe, Brian Stephenson (Zinmobi & Text Republic), Ken Tobin (Tralee Chamber Alliance), Cllr Graham Spring (Mayor of Tralee), David Scott (Tralee Chamber Alliance) and Text Republic, Brian Stephenson, said: “ZinMobi & Text Republic are delighted to be sponsoring the See Something, Say Something campaign in Tralee. The technology we’ve built for this initiative uses text messaging which is ideal as it works on all phones and it’s a technology that everyone is very familiar with. We designed this system with the goal of making it simple, user-friendly and effective while ensuring the anonymity of the person making the report.” Former Tánaiste Dick Spring was recently appointed the Business Development Ambassador for Tralee with a view to helping Tralee Chamber Alliance in its efforts to create jobs.
The launch of the See Something, Say Something campaign will enhance the town’s reputation as a great place to live, work and visit and ultimately complement the ambassadorial role being undertaken by Dick Spring. For more details about the magnificent work being undertaken by Tralee Chamber Alliance on behalf of the business community in Kerry’s Capital, visit www. Tralee.ie. HEALTHY RECIPES TRALEE ADVERTISER
HEALTHY RECIPES for 2018 Peaches are in season now, beautiful and juicy and often thought of as a dessert only fruit, but it makes a very tasty salad. We served it this week with “st tola goats cheese “ yum yum!!!So here are two lovely ways to serve it as a light salad,as a starter, lunch or main course with salad
GRILLED PEACH AND APRICOT SALAD INGREDIENTS • • • •
1 bunch kale, destemmed 4 apricots, halved 4 peaches, halved 1/4 pound prosciutto, thinly sliced.
• • •
1/4 cup feta cheese 1/4 cup olive oil 1 to 2 tablespoons lemon juice
Preheat the grill. While it warms up, tear or chop the kale leaves into bite-size pieces and place those in a large salad bowl. Add a pinch of salt and a tablespoon of olive oil and massage the kale, kneading it for a minute or so until it softens. Whisk together the remaining olive oil and the lemon juice, adjusting to your taste. Set the dressing aside. Tear or cut the prosciutto into smaller pieces and set those aside too. When the grill is reasonably but not overwhelming hot, brush the apricots and peaches very lightly with a neutral oil and grill, cut side down, until deeply caramelized. When the fruit is grilled, toss the kale with the prepared dressing and then crumble the feta on top. Add the prosciutto and then the still-hot peaches and apricots, letting their juices seep down into the kale. (If there are any extra juices on the plate you put them on after grilling, add those too.) Eat with crusty bread
GRILLED SALAD
WITH ROMAINE, PEACHES, GARLIC SCAPES, AND STEAK
For the balsamic reduction: • 1/2 cup balsamic vinegar (use an economical variety and save the good stuff for other uses For the grilled salad: • 2 small heads romaine lettuce • 6 garlic scapes, tips trimmed • 4 to 6 peaches, halved • 1 1/2 pounds skirt steak • sea salt, to taste • freshly ground black pepper, to taste
METHOD To make the balsamic reduction, pour balsamic vinegar in a heavy-bottomed medium-sized saucepan and set over medium-high heat. Stirring all the while, maintain a constant but gentle bubbling, edging the heat down a bit as needed. Cook for about 10 minutes, or until mixture has reduced by half. Reduction should be thick, but it should still easily drip off the back of a spoon. Set it aside while you grill the vegetables. Prepare a hot grill. Prep the romaine. Leave the core intact, but slice the reddish tip off the very end of the bunch. Next, working from end to top, halve the romaine. Immerse in water, and shake to dislodge any sand, paying close attention to the very base. Shake out and pat dry. Set aside. Grill the garlic scapes over the hottest part of the grill, cooking each side for 1 to 2 minutes. Slice into 4-inch sections and set aside. Grill the peaches on each side for 2 to 3 minutes. Use a sharp paring knife to slice out the pits and then cut each half in half (to make quarters). Grill the romaine for 1 to 2 minutes on each side. Cut out the core and chop the leaves into bite-size pieces. Arrange grilled vegetables on plates. Next up, season both sides of the skirt steak with a generous pinch of sea salt. (Adding salt just before cooking leaches less moisture from the meat and makes for an excellent sear.) Cook for 3 to 4 minutes a side, let rest for 5 minutes, and then slice into 1/4-inch slices. Lay several slices of steak on each plate and finish with a drizzle of balsamic reduction and several twists ground black pepper

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... Rose Festival appeals to non-contributors to play their part in biggest FREE Festival yet! IT’S the beginning of August, the Dome is up, the lights are up, and excitement is building ahead of the start of Kerry’s most important annual international tourism event, the Rose of Tralee International Festival. The street entertainment alone will cost €355,000 this year to present a line-up of family-friendly, FREE and affordable fun from Friday 17th to Tuesday 21st August. Therefore, a significant increase in financial support is required and Festival organisers are asking local businesses for their support again in 2018, with every Euro contributed set to be invested directly into staging so many events on Tralee’s streets. The Managing Director of the Rose of Tralee International Festival, Anthony O’Gara, said: “We are grateful to our partners in the local business community for their contributions towards the Rose of Tralee Street Festival in the past. The collection from them raised €40,000 towards the Festival Street Entertainment costs in 2017. This year’s Street Events will cost €355,000. Contributing to and organising the funding
of the balance of €315,000 is placing a heavy burden on the Rose of Tralee. It stifles our capacity to develop the overall event for the benefit of town and county. This is a town partnership endeavour, and the commitment and participation of businesses in the town and surrounding areas is so important.” The High Kings, Jake Carter, Sean and Conor Price, Hermitage Green – all will perform FREE on Denny Street during this year’s Festival. The amazing inflatable world of light and colour, the Miracoco Luminarium, will span the length and breadth of Páirc an Phiarsaigh while Tesco Family Town will be bigger and better than ever. It would not be possible to offer such variety on Tralee’s streets without sponsorship and the backing of local businesses, many of whom rely on a successful Festival for their own bottom line. However, a significant number of businesses and professionals in Tralee and its environs give nothing and let their fellow citizens carry the burden of helping to fund the event.
Festival organisers are making a special appeal to those people and to everyone in business to please do the right thing and make a reasonable contribution to an event that has served Tralee so well in good times and in bad. “As it stands financial support to the Festival from business people outside the town and county is over four times more than the local contribution. That imbalance is not healthy and we would hope that this appeal will help to create an awareness of the importance of supporting an event that highlights so much that is
positive about Tralee,” said Anthony O’Gara. Contributions towards this year’s street festival may be made by cash or cheque, payable to: Kerry Rose Festival Ltd, Ashe Memorial Hall, Denny Street, Tralee, Co Kerry. For full details of all the fun of the 2018 Rose of Tralee Festival visit www. roseoftralee.ie or download the Rose of Tralee App from iTunes or Google Play Store.

Bexblah Beauty CHOOSING A MAKEUP ARTIST FOR YOUR WEDDING There are lots of different Makeup Artists out there and choosing the right one for you and your style is very important, especially if it’s an important event or a wedding. Pictures last forever and you don’t want to end up spending time and money only to end up disappointed.
DO RESEARCH
First and foremost, look up a few Makeup Artists in your area. Look at their work, look at their qualifications and look and their experience. If you know someone who got their makeup done by that Makeup Artist, message them, ask how they got on. Everyone has different tastes in makeup so make sure that if you like dramatic makeup the artist can do that or if you’re more on the natural side make sure they can do that.
QUALITY OVER QUANTITY
The Makeup Artist you’re choosing is a professional. He/She has a craft and should charge according to their experience and training. If you’re looking for the cheapest person for the job, they mightn’t necessarily be the best, and the same goes for the most expensive. If it’s your wedding, I recommend not to skimp on your Makeup Artist, it’s one day, pay a bit extra for better quality. On another note, just because a Makeup Artist uses expensive high end brands, it doesn’t necessarily mean that they’re good. I have both high end and drugstore brands in my kit, I just use what works best, not what looks good in the kit.
HAVE A TRIAL
If it’s a wedding day or even a debs or graduation, if you’re anyway unsure, have a trial! That way you can see how the Makeup Artist works and how the makeup stays on.

TRALEE ADVERTISER
KNOW WHAT YOU WANT TELL THE MAKEUP ARTIST WHAT YOU WANT.
Artist should recommend a different style because detailed cut creases don’t show up on hooded eyes, but, if that’s what you want, they should do it. What I’m saying is, your Makeup Artist will be a master at their craft, they should have spent time studying face and eye shapes, they should know what works for your skin type and colouring, hair colour, eye colour and face shape. They should take into account your face and what would enhance your already beautiful features and should recommend what they think will work best. If you trust their opinion listen to them.
LISTEN TO HIS/HER OPINION/SUGGESTIONS
If they turn you into a clone of every other client they have ever done, you know not to return.
There is absolutely no point telling her “do what you think is best”. There are SO many different looks and styles of makeup, how on earth is he/she supposed to know how you like to look? If you want a purple smokey eye. If you don’t like heavy coverage or strong contouring. If you only wear liquid eyeliner. Just tell him/her! Your Makeup Artist is not a mind reader, if she has no guide on what you want she won’t be able to do her job to the best of their ability.
They’re the professional after all, well I hope. If you go in with a picture of Kim Kardashian but are pale with blonde hair and blue eyes, you will not look like Kim Kardashian. If you want a really detailed cut crease eyeshadow look but have hooded eyes, your Makeup

FITNESS!
NEW SEASON... NEW GOALS!
HELLO EVERYONE! Hope you’re having a great week. Since summer is coming (in Sydney that is) I’ve decided to set new goals and aim to get back on track fitness wise. Since moving to Australia, there’s been a lot of meals out, treats and just eating a lot of cookies to be honest. But I’m going to try and reign it in a little for the next while. Not be strict and cut things out or ban “bad foods”, just be more mindful of what it is I’m eating. After just a week of getting back into a fitness routine and healthy eating I am already feeling so much better. I have started to eat more regular meals and I’ve gone to the gym 4 or 5 times since I joined last Wednesday. It’s really amazing the difference you can feel in yourself and your body when you take care of what you eat and exercise. I have been drinking
at least three litres of water a day and trying to get in at least 3 cups of green tea.
Why Green tea?
It is loaded with antioxidants and nutrients that have powerful effects on the body.
This includes improved brain function, fat loss, a lower risk of cancer and many other incredible benefits. I’ve been doing a lot of HIIT(High Intensity Interval Training) on the treadmill this week as well as incline uphill walking. I do 20/30 seconds sprint with a 10 second rest 5 times in 3 sets. And it’s fantastic for getting my heart rate up. I will keep you posted as to how I’m doing here and on my Instagram Until next week , stay focussed , stay fit, stay happy

IT’S ONLY A JOKE TWO STRANGERS, A MAN AND A WOMAN, ARE SHARING A SLEEPER CAB ON AN OVERNIGHT TRAIN
At around midnight, as they are both trying to fall asleep, the man says to the woman: “Excuse me ma’am, but it’s really cold, would you mind passing me one of the extra blankets on the table beside you?” The woman answers: “I’ll tell you what, I’m also feeling really cold, for one night, why don’t pretend we are married?” The man, taken aback but enthusiastic replies: “Yeah of course!” And so the woman says: “Good. Then go and get it yourself you lazy ass.”
AT THE INTERVIEW FOR MY NEW JOB I WAS ASKED
“What would your friends say are your weaknesses?” “I don’t have any!” Was my reply. The interviewer seemed a little surprised and answered: “That can’t be true. Everybody has some weak points.” Whereupon I said: “Oh no. You got that wrong. I meant I don’t have any friends.”
ROGER DECIDED HE WAS IN NO SHAPE TO DRIVE AS HE WALKED OUT OF THE BAR
So he sensibly left his car parked and walked home. As he was staggering along, he was stopped by a policeman. ‘What are you doing out here at three o’clock in the morning?’ asked the police officer. ‘I’m on my way to a lecture,’ answered Roger. ‘And who on earth, in their right mind, is going to give a lecture at this time of night?’ enquired the constable sarcastically. ‘My wife,’ slurred Roger grimly.

A NAVY MAN WALKS INTO A BAR
A Navy man walks into a bar, gives the bartender a conspiratorial wink and says, “Quick, pour me a drink, before the trouble starts.” The bartender pours a drink and watches as the Sailor downs it in one gulp. The Sailor slams the glass down on the bar and says, “Quick, give me another one before the trouble starts.” The bartender pours another glass and the Sailor drinks it as quickly as he had the first. The Sailor pauses, lets out a belch and demands a third drink ‘before the trouble starts.’ After several rounds of this, the bartender says, “Look Sailor, you’ve been talking about trouble for ten minutes. Just when is this ‘trouble’ going to start?” The sailor looks at the bartender and grins. “The trouble starts just as soon as you figure out that I don’t have any money.”

TORQUING CARS! JAGUAR LAND ROVER REPORTS £264 MILLION PRE-TAX LOSS
Profitability swings violently for Jaguar Land Rover in Q1 due to China, Brexit and diesel uncertainty Jaguar Land Rover has reported a pre-tax loss of £264 million for the first quarter of the 2018/19 financial year, leveraging the changing nature of the new car market in China as having a significant effect on the company’s accounts. Retail sales year on year stand at 145,510 vehicles globally, up 5.9 per cent, but wholesales are down 5 per cent to 131,560. JLR made a £571m profit in the same quarter last year, but has been hit hard by changes to Chinese import taxes, which have temporarily stunted demand for new cars. Import duties in China have been slashed from 25 per cent to 10 per cent, effective from 1 July. As such, it’s likely many Chinese new car buyers neglected purchasing a vehicle in the first quarter of the year, waiting instead for the taxes – and showroom prices of new cars – to fall. With setbacks in China pinned as the main reason for JLR’s first pre-tax loss in three years, continuing uncertainty surrounding Brexit and Britain’s post-Brexit trading relationship with Europe, plus setbacks in the diesel market, were also to blame.Jaguar Land Rover Chief executive Dr Ralf Speth said: “We had a pre-tax loss in the first quarter, reflecting the impact of the announcement of the duty reduction in China as well as planned dealer stock reductions in the quarter. “We also continue to be impacted negatively by uncertainty over diesels in Europe along with Brexit and additional diesel taxes in UK. Given these issues, we will remain focused on driving growth and simultaneously reducing costs and boosting operational efficiency and capability, taking the necessary steps to shape our future.” Dr Speth has previously warned that a no-deal Brexit scenario could be extremely costly for the carmaker, potentially siphoning £1.2bn from the company’s profits each year.
BOLD AND CREATIVE, SERGIO MARCHIONNE WILL BE SORELY MISSED’
The automotive industry has lost one of its most respected and tenacious car chiefs. Last week Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) announced that its chief executive Sergio Marchionne had passed away following complications that occurred during surgery. The 66-year-old was due to step down from the role next spring, marking what have been almost 15 years at the head of one of the world’s largest car makers. However, it is without question that the company Marchionne leaves behind is far leaner, fitter and more relevant than the one he took charge of in 2004.He brought the Fiat Group back from the brink of bankruptcy and became a figurehead in the industry through his bold, creative and determined attitude. He was publicly critical about his own products as well as those from rival brands, which meant an audience with Marchionne was never dull. He had a special relationship with the media; his outspoken but humorous approach added colour to an industry often very black or white. During his time at the helm of FCA, his boldest decision was 2009’s takeover of the Chrysler Group. Since then, FCA has blossomed into a car industry powerhouse. Only two months ago Marchionne outlined FCA’s ambitious five-year product plan and proudly announced it was finally debt free. Of course, FCA’s revival wasn’t orchestrated by Marchionne alone; the man who has taken over as CEO, Mike Manley, who was brought up in Bedfordshire, has also played a pivotal role in helping reshape the company. But it’s difficult to imagine FCA would find itself in the position it is today if it wasn’t for the guidance and intelligence of Marchionne. He will be sorely missed by all.( CREDIT ..Jonathan Burn…)
MOTORING SHORTCUTS ON BMW, it has been reported that the company will make other variants of its recently unveiled 8 Series, including a convertible and a gran coupe. TOYOTA AND Q-PARK have teamed up so drivers of self-charging hybrids can avail of priority parking in four Q-Parks around the country. The partnership, already up and running, provides for two parking bays in four locations to be exclusively for self-charging hybrid cars. The spaces are near exits and alongside priority spaces for mothers and babies, for example. You don’t even need to be driving a Toyota to park in one, but you do have to be in a hybrid. The parking bays are in the following car parks: St Stephen’s Green and Clery’s, Dublin; Grand Parade, Cork; and Harvey’s Quay, Limerick. I just hope that non-hybrid owners respect them and do not park, as they so often do, in areas designated for electric cars.

TALKING SPORT WITH THE TRALEE ADVERTISER The u16’s have qualified for the County League semi-finals after beating Legion while the B’s beat Cordal/ Scartaglin as they progress to the next stage of the Division 7 County League.
with “The Voice” Pat Harnett
FAI NATIONAl P.R.O. OF THE YEAR POSSIBLE DEAD RUBBER IS VERY MUCH ALIVE: Somewhere at some time David Clifford deserves to get a big reward from both the GAA and the town of Killarney as his two late goals have meant that a game against Kildare that could have been played in any club ground will now draw a big crowd and huge interest this Saturday night. There has been plenty of analysis written about this game but one thing is that is throws up some scenarios that will be a little alien to GAA fans. Things are not in Kerry own hands. One wonders what will be the fall-out if Monaghan and Galway are level with 10 minutes to go and they play a game of keep the ball so both go through and Kerry go out. This is certainly a possibility with the Super 8 set-up. One wonders what tweaks will be made next year as we could have had three meaningless games this weekend…… But on the other hand if it was Kerry and another side in their positions would we do any different? Purists will say of course and that every game should be played out to the end but if you risked going out to a last minute point or settle for a draw and stay in what would you want your team to do? And despite what Eamonn Fitzmaurice says that he will not be keeping an ear on the other game I am sure that the reaction in the crowd will let him know. But the only thing that is definite is that Kerry have to beat Kildare and by as much as possible and the rest will take care of itself. Before Kerry and Kildare throw in at 6pm on Saturday night the county will hopefully be celebrating another All Ireland. The u12 B hurlers face Derry in their decider in Nowlan Park. This is a big game at an iconic venue and we wish Ian Brick and his charges all the best. The Kerry minors are one step away from another all Ireland final but it’s a big step. They will face Monaghan in Croke Park after seeing off Roscommon. It must be mentioned that there were only 700 plus people at the game and the question must be asked it that good enough for a game like this. The GAA can’t expect fans to travel all over the country every week so there must be a doubling-up of fixtures where possible. Back to the minor game and while

Peter Keane and his management team will have every detail covered in the build-up there is one niggling worry – very few if any of these boys have played in Croke Park. But that’s for a future week – this weekend is all about our last chance saloon in this year’s All Ireland championship. As one much more esteemed journalist than me said this week – “looking at where Eamonn Fitzmaurice and his team are in their re-building phase it would not be a surprise if they went down to Kildare. However it would also not be a surprise if they won that game and went on to beat Dublin in the semi-final”. All will be revealed by 8pm on Saturday night. TICKETS FOR THE BIG GAME: Tickets for the Kerry v Kildare game are Unreserved and priced at e25 for adults, e5 for juveniles, e25 for wheelchair fans and an attendant while Student and Senior Citizen tickets will be available on the day. Tickets are on sale from the regular outlets. 17 TEAMS SET OUT IN RACE FOR BISHOP MOYNIHAN: The draw for the Garvey’s Senior Football County Championship took place this week at the Tralee Wetlands Centre. With 17 teams in the competition the pre-set preliminary qualifier sees St Brendan’s take on West Kerry. The game will be on Tuesday August 28th or September 4th depending on Kerry’s involvement in the All Ireland series. The winner will be away to East Kerry. For the Kerry sides involved Kerins O’Rahillys goes to Feale Rangers and Austin Stacks are at home to Kenmare District. The rest of the draw sees Dr Crokes v St Kierans, Rathmore against Killarney Legion, Mid Kerry taking on An Ghaeltacht, South Kerry up against Kenmare Shamrocks and Dingle against Shannon Rangers. LAST 4 IN THE HURLING: The draw for the Senior Hurling semi-finals was also made with defending champions Ballyduff taking on Kilmoyley and Causeway facing Lixnaw with the games on the weekend of August 11th and 12th. WALK IN MEMORY OF ROBERT: The many friends of the late Robert Friday 3rd August 2018
O’Dowd have come together to organise a walk in memory of the popular Tralee man who passed away in April. Robert put up a brave battle against cancer and those behind the walk want to raise money for the Palliative Care Unit at CUH where Robert received excellent care. Robert had a long association with John Mitchels and he won a number of trophies with the club. A large crowd is expected tonight, Friday night August 3rd at 7pm, at the Aquadome for a 5k walk, with a e5 entry fee and a 10K run with a e20 en try fee and there are prizes for the first three home in both the male and female categories. Following this there will be a barbecue at Benner’s Hotel where Brian Hurley will host a sporting questions and answers session with some special guests attending including Liverpool legend Alan Kennedy who scored the goal in the 1981 European Cup final against Real Madrid. This is another sign of the sporting community of Tralee coming together to raise money in memory of one of their own. Even if you can’t make the walk/ run or barbecue I am sure you can still donate by contacting the John Mitches committee. STACKS UNDERAGE NEWS: The club camp starts this Tuesday, August 7th, at Connolly Park and runs until the 11th running from 9.30am to 1pm each day. Registrations will be done on Tuesday morning costing e40 per player or e60 per family. The u6’s train on Thursday and on Sunday mornings while the u8’s played two games against Na Gaeil. The Bracker Regan Cup is underway and as every year is being eagerly contested. The u10’s took part in the John Galvin Tournament and are training again on Sunday. The football continues every Tuesday at the Seanchill Community Centre and all are welcome to come along. The u12 A’s and B’s are in the Kelliher’s Toyota Central League Division 1 with games over the next few weeks. The u13’s are preparing for the Denis O’Connor Lee Strand Tournament that will take place on September 8th and 9th while the u14’s went down to Rahillys in their Central League Division 1 clash but have lots of games left.
BALLYMAC NEWS: The seniors took on recent County Intermediate champions Kilcummin away in Round 10 of the County League and were well behind at half time 1-10 to 0-05. The boys battled well in the second half but in the end went down 1-17 to 1-10. Next up is a tough Tralee championship game against Austin Stacks. Today, Friday August 3rd is a big day for the Juniors as they take on Churchill in the County Final at Na Gaeil with a 7.30pm throw in. To reach the final is a great achievement and the team is hoping for a big support. The Minors first game in their Central Region Division 3 League campaign was deferred. Lotto: There was no winner of the Lotto from the numbers drawn 8,9,11 and 20 and the next jackpot is e5,800. In the under-age sections the u6’s train again on Sunday as do the u8’s. The u14’s played Rahillys in the Central Region Division 1 but it was the Tralee town side that won by 5 points after a very tight encounter. They then played the Stacks in the quarter-finals. Rahillys will again be the opponents this Monday night in the last 4 encounter. The u16’s took on Currow in the County League Round 4 but came out second best on the night. The club congratulates James Bailey and Adam Joy who played in the North Kerry u15 team that beat Laois in Dublin last weekend. ST PAT’S NEWS: There was no winner of the Lotto from the numbers drawn 11,13,14 and 30 and the next jackpot will be e8.600. The clubs Cul Camp takes place this week from August 6th to 10th from 10am to 2.30pm. The camp is for boys and girls aged between 6 and 13 costing e60 per child with reductions for second and more children. Academy Off: There is no Academy this Sunday with action returning on August 13th. The u6’s had a good run out last Sunday while Jake Flynn was named as u8 Player of the Week. Keelin Sinnott was the u10 Player of the Week. The u14 girls are preparing for the North Kerry Ladies League while the u16 boys came away from St Michaels Foilmore with a draw. One more win will see them reach the semi-finals. The Seniors saw off Lispole 3-20 to 4-10 in a high scoring County League Division 3 Round 10 clash. This win guarantees the team their Division 3 status for next year. St Brendan’s with a number of St Pat’s players enjoyed a good win over Dr Crokes in the Acorn Life u21 Football Championship. KERINS O’RAHILLYS NEWS: Defeat in the game against Beaufort means that the seniors now have to beat or at least get a

TALKING SPORT WITH THE TRALEE ADVERTISER draw in their game with Dingle. A second defeat in a row could see them into a play-off. The final score in the game against Beaufort was 2-11 to 0-13. The game against Dingle will take place on the weekend of August 18th if Kerry are not in the All Ireland final or the weekend of October 14th if they are. The seniors play John Mitchels in the Tralee Championship next Sunday August 12th in Strand Road at 2pm. The u21’s exited the Championshiplast Tuesday going down to West Kerry in Strand Road by 5 points. The Minors under Paul Ryan fared much better as they were crowned Tralee Board Division 2 League champions beating Ardfert. The Family Fun Day and the Summer Camp have been very successful for all who took part and the club thanks all those who helped out in any way. The u13’s are in the Town League final against Churchill, the u14’s had a big win over Na Gaeil but the B’s went down to Stacks in the semi-final. Well done to the clubs players who were involved with North Kerry in Portlaoise and who are through to the semi-finals after wins over Dublin and Laois. South Kerry also progressed. In the u16’s 7 a side Blitz the boys say off Annascaul/Lispole and Desmonds and play in the final tonight Friday. The girl’s underage teams train at the normal times all week. Lotto: There was no winner of the Lotto from the numbers drawn 18, 22,23 and 31 and the next jackpot will be e5,100. ACTION AT THE KINGDOM GREYHOUND STADIUM: This Friday night at the Kingdom Greyhound Stadium are the second rounds of the Speedrite Rose of Tralee, the semi-final heats of the John Mitchells GAA Buster A2 current 550 yards and the Boylesports 2018 Derby Trial stake. One Saturday night the first race is off at 7.45pm while before that is the first SIS meeting at the new day and time. This meeting will now be on Sunday evenings at 6.25pm from this Sunday August 5th. For all enquiries re racing or trials at the track please ring the Racing Office on 061 448057. KISSANE IS CYCLING’S COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP: Expertly organised by Race Director Tom Gentleman and the Tralee Manor West club the County Cycling Championships took place last week with Killarney’s Conor Kissane cementing his place as the top rider in the county this season. He broke away from Cian Smailes from In Fuse Identity Racing and Denis Lynch Sliabh Luachra to take the win. This saw Kissane win back to back titles and he also took the A1 crown on the night adding these to the County League and Sean O’Connor Cup which he wrapped up earlier in the month. Killarney CC’s Leigh Hewerdine was crowned the A2 champion, Lynch the A3 crown while the host
club had the top 3 riders in the A4 category with Paudie O’Sullivan being crowned the Champion. John Roche took second ahead of Joe Roche. Fergal Murphy finished ahead of Ciaran Coggins in the Junior Category with Paul Horan and Sean McCarron winning the M40 and M50 County Championship titles. Stefan Caulfield Drier took the 16’s race and the combination of wins saw Killarney Cycling Club take the Team Title and the Breen Family Shield. Earlier in the night the hotly contested u12’s and u14’s County Championships took place. Here Nuala Moloney won the u12’s from Callum Steadman with Eoin Hillard third. In the u14 Boys race Adam Lenihan was first, Shane Galvin second and Louis Steadman third. Amy Fleming from the Sliabh Luachra club took the u14 Girls crown. KERRY SET FOR LAST SOCCER TOURNAMENT OF THE SEASON: The Galway Cup which takes place at the grounds of Salthill Devon in Drom just outside Galway city is either the end of the present season or the start of the new season for those Leagues playing winter soccer! Of course from 2020 on the tournament will be in the middle of the soccer season as all underage Leagues will be playing in the calendar year. But that’s in the future – for now the tournament gets underway on Wednesday with Kerry Schoolboys sending two u13’s teams. In the Elite Section Kerry are in with Cavan / Monaghan, Dundalk Schoolboys and Clare with games against the first two on the opening day at 9.30am and 5.55pm. They play Clare at 11.50 on Thursday with the semi-finals on Friday and the final on Saturday. The Club Boys side take on Finn Harps Academy, Knocknacarra FC and Mervue FC. They open against Knocknacarra on Wednesday at 2.25, Mervue on Thursday at 1pm and Finn Harps on Friday at 9.30pm with their semi-finals on that afternoon and the finals / playoffs on Saturday. LEAGUE OF IRELAND: On the League of Ireland front Kerry’s 15’s almost made the perfect comeback in their game away to Wexford in the League of Ireland. From 3-0 down the depleted side pulled two back and stand-in keeper Ryan Guerin saved a penalty but they just ran out of time to snatch a point. Kerry 17’s lost out to Limerick 3-1 at Mounthawk Park in a game where they again conceded lateon which is something that the management need to work on as overall they are playing some very good football without getting the results. SOD TURNED: Mounthawk Park, the home of the KDL, has seen the turning of the sod on its second All Weather pitch – there can’t be many other Leagues in the country that have
Call Chris or Colette Tel: 066-7126399 or e-mail : traleeadvertiser@gmail.com
two full sized Astro Turf pitches at their home base. This development plus the planned indoor hall will certainly make Mounthawk Park the Centre of Excellence for soccer in Kerry. The pitch should be ready for play by the end of September and will be a great source of pride for all involved in Kerry soccer when the KDL hosts the Centenary Shield later in the year with the u16’s of Ireland, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland coming to town for a week. 2 MORE IN GREEN: The conveyor belt of Kerry players pulling on the Green of Ireland continues this as two more young players have been called up after attending a number of training sessions. Tralee Dynamos Alex Hoare and Killarney Athletics Alex Hennigan have been called into the Ireland ETP programme for the Actavo Cup that will be hosted at Cherry Orchard FC from September 14th to the 16th. NIAMH’S THE BEST GIRL: Níamh O Mahony recently represented Presentation Tralee on the Irish team taking part in the Schools International Athletics Board track and field competition in Grangemouth stadium in Scotland. She won the Silver medal for her second place result in the 3000M. She also received the Sean Nyhan Award from the Irish team management as Best Girl Athlete 2018. At the Irish Life Health National Senior Championships held in the Morton Stadium Tralee Harriers Solange Diogo won bronze in the women’s triple jump with a leap of 11.43m. Liam Carroll from the same club made it into the top 8 in men’s long jump. A number of Kerry athletes are heading to Scotland for the Celtic Games this weekend. BANNA 5 AND 10K: This Sunday will see a huge crowd heading for Banna when runners and joggers will tackle the 5k and 10k run that gets underway at 9.30am. KNOW YOUR RIGHTS: APPRENTICESHIPS Question My daughter is leaving school and she is thinking about doing an apprenticeship. How can she qualify for an apprenticeship and how much are apprentices paid? Norma Foley (Mayor of Kerry) with her niece Emma Tarrant meets Don O’Neill and Pascal at the Recovery haven Charity Gala Ball at Ballyroe Heights Hotel,Tralee recently
Julie and Helen meet Don and Pascal at the Recovery Haven Gala Charity Ball at Ballyroe Heights Hotel,Tralee recently .
Answer An apprenticeship is the recognised way that people are trained in a craft trade or profession. It involves both training on-the-job with an employer and training off-the-job in an education centre. To be eligible for an apprenticeship, your daughter must be at least 16 and should have at least a grade D in five subjects in the Junior Cert. However, some employers may only take on an apprentice with higher qualifications or may have other requirements. If your daughter doesn’t have the required qualifications, she might still be able to do an apprenticeship – she should check with her local Education and Training Board (ETB). Traditional craft apprenticeships include construction, electrical engineering and motor sectors. For example, there are apprenticeships in carpentry, plumbing, car mechanics and electrical trades. This type of apprenticeship usually lasts for four years. Your daughter should contact the apprenticeship section of her local ETB. New occupational apprenticeships are being developed in Information and Communications Technology (ICT), medical technology, insurance, finance, accountancy, logistics and hospitality. These apprenticeships last between two and four years. For these, your daughter should apply to the industry lead for the apprenticeship she is interested in. She can also contact the apprenticeship section of her local ETB for information. While your daughter is training on-the-job, her employer will pay her a recommended apprenticeship wage. If she is training in certain sectors, SOLAS pays a weekly allowance equal to that wage while she is training off-the-job. In all other sectors, her off-thejob payments will depend on her employer, although SOLAS will contribute to travel and accommodation costs. Your daughter can find a full list of apprenticeships on apprenticeship.ie.
