Looking back over the past 8 months, its all too obvious the big chunk that the Pandemic took out of all our lives ... As things slowly get back to normal ( what is normal nowadays ?) , there are certain things that are missing, business that remain closed, people who are no longer in professions that they were in 2019, habits that have now disappeared , maybe less social , less outgoing . So when we see Irelands longest running Festival , The Rose Of Tralee , under the protective arm of Anthony O Gara and his professional team as well as his army of volunteers ,come back after 3 years away , then we know we've got something special and we know we must support it even more. A man who was educated in St Mels School in Longford , and a stellar career that included an 8 year executive stint in Kerry Group , it would have probably been just 'as easy ' to walk away . After all there are many stories of events that have not been able to come back this year and we might never see again . But the Rose of Tralee is different... Why? Because the people of Tralee, Kerry and beyond make it so. Someone, here in Tralee in the late 1950's had an idea, a vision.. and look whats happened since! As Anthony said in his recent Tralee Chamber Alliance podcast interview. "There are other towns both home and abroad that would take your right arm off to celebrate this Irishness". Our Festivals International reach is astounding... St Patricks Day Parade alone in New York, sees 40 Roses ( and Escorts !) come together . Indeed when I was President of Tralee Chamber of Commerce in the late 1990s , we commissioned a study to determine the financial worth of such an event to our Town ..with the conclusion that it was equivalent to a 450 job Factory to the local economy... and that was 25 years ago! So when you take a look at the full page advert in this issue with the Festival thanking all its sponsors and supporters , ask yourself , 'am I on that list ? '..' What have I done to support this wonderful event that will be broadcast out to millions of viewers over the next week? And if you feel its not enough, don’t worry , there's always 2023! ..Anthony , his team and all the Festival supporters will make sure of that! Chris Shortt (Editor) Its Tralee's Festival... lets celebrate it and support it!

A Festival like no other! By Georgie Downes
Kerry Motor Club’s Winter Rally included in ‘An Turas Mór – Homecoming Kerry’ festival.
Kerry Motor Club’s annual Kerry Winter Rally will form one of the main events in the recently launched ‘An Turas Mór – Homecoming Kerry’ Thefestival.rally has a new date –October 29 – instead of its traditional November slot on the calendar and club officials are working behind the scenes to get the biggest annual motorsport event in North Kerry off the ground. As ever the rally will be based at the Banna Beach Hotel but will have a new Tralee venue too after Kelliher’s Toyota Garage offered its state-ofthe-art premises for pre-event safety checks which will take place on the Saturday before the main competition. This is an ideal opportunity for members of the public to see the cars up close and meet some of the drivers taking part in Sunday’s rally. Route details and spectator locations will be announced in due course, but the club is delighted to announce that it has been included in An Turas Mór – Homecoming Kerry’ festival as a result of years of collaboration with the London Irish Motor Club. The tie in will encourage Irish immigrants based in Britain and further afield the chance to come home and experience Kerry motorsport. An overseas participants reception will take place at the Banna Beach Hotel on Friday October 28. The month-long gathering is a county wide initiative to bring home Kerry Diaspora during October this year. It is presented by Kerry County Council as part of the Global Irish Festival Series which is a joint initiative between Fáilte Ireland and the Department of Foreign Affairs.

The Academy were out in force and also continue in their Go Games competitions. The u11 squad and coaches presented Sean Kelly with a signed ball and top ahead of his families move to Spain. The club was delighted to have a number of players on Kerry representative squads and well done to all of them. The club is running a number of Health and Wellbeing initiatives and the Mothers and Others enjoyed an evening of football against their Killarney counterparts. There was no winner of the Lotto from the numbers drawn 3, 32, 24 and 23. The next jackpot will be e3000.
PARNELLS NEWS: The Buster Race Fundraiser scheduled for last Saturday had to be postponed due to racing being cancelled because of the warm weather. It will now take place this Saturday afternoon when the Roses will be attending. The first race is off at 2.45pm. The club thanks all those who contributed to the Clothing Collection and also those who are supporting the regular Lotto. The club thanks all those who made the Cul Camps such a great success. AUSTIN STACKS NEWS Well done to the seniors who had a vital 1 point win over Rahillys 1-15 to 1-14 to set up a vital final round Group game next weekend. The club congratulates Liam Kearns, an ex-Championship winner with the Rockies, on his appointment as Offaly manager. Our Card sessions continue in the Clubhouse on Monday and Thursday nights with the starting time at 9pm Theresharp. was no winner of the Lotto from the numbers drawn 3,16,18 and 26 with the next jackpot being e2000. At underage level the All Stars and the Academy will be back in training and Go Games this week. There was great news for the All Stars as they have been invited to Croke Park in the near future. The 13’s are busy in Inter League action and we will also be in Saturdays Rose Cup. The 14’s will be in the Lee Strand Tournament on September 3rd. We had players on the Tralee District 15’s team who won their second game in a row defeating West Kerry.
The Minor Ladies took on Southern Gaels in the County League Division 1 semi-final in what turned out to be an end-to-end cracker.in the end they went down narrowly 5-12 to 4-13. The 14’s had a good win in the North Kerry League defeating John Mitchels 3-07 to 2-05. The Under 13, 15 and 17 County Championships get underway this week and are a straight knock-out format.
BALLYMACELLIGOTT NEWS:
IN THE WATER: Well done to Tralee native Kevin Dennehy who set a new record of 5 hours, 56 minutes 43 for the 18.6km swim from Fenit Lock Gates to Sandy Bay. Collette Murray took on the Blennerville Lock gates around the Lighthouse to Fenit Island and completed the 11km (solo skins) in 3 hours 11 minutes. Margaret Gilbert completed the Fenit to Maherees swim (non- wetsuit). Well done to the swimmers and all their support people. Well done to all those who took part in the Blennerville to Fenit swim, sponsored by Smaash Burger, and to all who ensured things went off smoothly and safely.
The Seniors are due to play Keel next weekend but at the time of going to print this had to be confirmed. The Senior Ladies Club Championship begins at home to John Mitchels on Monday August 22nd.
ON THE BIKE: The Munster Criterium Championships were held at the Limerick Racecourse, hosted by
AS HOT ON THE SPORTING FROM AS THE WEATHER WAS: As we are into the middle of August and peak of the holiday season things are as hot as ever across many sporting fronts.
The Seniors lost out by the narrowest margin to town rivals Austin Stacks and have a vital Club Championship final Group game at the weekend when they host TheTemplenoe.Girlsare getting ready for their Championships while the u13’s enjoyed a win away to Dingle and were delighted with the ice cream provided by their hosts after the game in the heat. They were also treated by sponsors Sandy Feet Farm afterwards. They will play Na Gaeil in the Thesemi-final.u14’swillplay Knock/Brosna in Round 5 of the North Kerry League while the u17’s play MKL Gaels in their quarter final. The Senior Ladies are down to play Glenflesk at the Theweekend.Juvenile Academy continues each weekend with teams also in Go Games action. There was no winner of the Lotto from the numbers drawn 2,10,19 and 29 with the next jackpot being e3000. ST PAT’S NEWS: There was no winner of the Lotto from the numbers drawn 4,7, 13 and 18 with the next jackpot being e2700. While some members of the Academy are away on holidays there was still a good turn-out and they train again this Sunday. The u12 Girls enjoyed their day out in Kenmare while the u13’s St Pat’s/ Rahillys combination had a B game against Ardfert who took the win in the Central League. It’s a busy time for the senior players who are in action with the club and with the St Brendan’s Board whose first game in the Garvey’s Super Valu Senior Championship will be against Feale Rangers on the weekend of September 10th/11th at a neutral venue. ON THE SOCCER FIELD: It was a good weekend on the LoI front with the Kerry 19’s defeating Drogheda 2-1 and the 17’s drawing 2-2 with the same opposition. The 14’s also earned a point in a 2-2 draw at home to Waterford. This Saturday only the 17’s are in action as they are away to Sligo Rovers at 3pm.
LOSS OF THE RACES STILL A DISAPPOINTMENT TO MANY: This is one time of the year when the loss of the Tralee Racecourse is keenly felt in the town, not just for the sporting aspect but the business it used to generate too. I remember coming over from Killarney to a packed Festival race meeting but now everyone is going in the opposite direction. Hopefully the future of the site at Ballybeggan can be sorted as a multi-purpose sporting venue – horse racing, cycling track, motorsports trials area, skate and BMX park, crazy golf, children’s play area etc. With a little thought and imagination it could be a brilliant addition to the town.
The Tralee derby in Group B of the Club Championship turned out to be a cracker with Austin Stacks just seeing off Kerins O’Rahillys. The win was also cheered on by Dr Crokes as it keeps their narrow hopes of a top two spot alive. With one game in the Group to go Templenoe are on 4 points, Austin Stacks and Rahillys on 2 and Dr Crokes pointless after two Indefeats.theIntermediate Group 2 John Mitchels went down to Laune Rangers and remain on 2 points behind Rangers who are also on 2 and Killarney Legion on 4 with Dromid Peirces pointless. So it is all to play for next weekend. On Saturday night in Group 1 Na Gaeil host Spa while in Group 2 the action is on Sunday with Rahillys hosting Templenoe and Stacks going to Crokes for 2.30 throw-ins. At the same time in Group 3 John Mitchels will also be in Killarney to face Legion. In the Junior Premier on Sunday at 2.30 St Pats welcome St Senans to Blennerville.
SOCCER’S ROSE CUP RETURNS: Tralee Dynamos will be the place to be for soccer and Rose fans as the Rose Cup returns. 8 Leagues – Kerry, Clare who are the holders since the inaugural competition in 2019, Cork WSSL, the MGL with the Dublin League sending two teams, West Cork, South Tipperary and Limerick Desmond – will be represented by their u13 Girls team. The action gets underway at 11.30 following the Parade and the visit of the Roses from 11am to 11.25am. The finals of the Cup and Shield will take place at 5pm and all are welcome with admission free with a bbq also being cooked up during the day.
GAA’S ROSE CUP TO TAKE PLACE AT RAHILLYS AND NA GAEIL: 16 u13 Boys club sides will be in Tralee this Saturday for the GAA Rose Cup with teams from Kerry being joined by those from Limerick, Cork, Tipperary and Clare. The event was first started in 2009 by the late Chairman of the Tralee Town Board Jimmy Foley and this year competition is being sponsored by the Bon Secours.
TRALEE GC: At the Tralee Golf Club the Captains Charity Day sponsored by Garvey’s Supervalu was won by the team of Paul Hickey, Gerard, Pat Lorigan and Evan Talty. They won on 99 points ahead of Ciaran McCann, Richard McCann, Conor Cronin and Niall Heeney.IntheClub sponsored Green and White Singles the winner was Patrick C Lynch ahead of Donal Sugrue and Pat O’Donnell. In the Ladies Section the Eileen Murphy Foursomes was won by Kathleen Finnegan and Joan Costello ahead of Paula O’Sullivan and Eleanor Doyle who finished two points behind the winners on 44 points. The 18 Hole Singles top three were Lucy Grattan (41 points), Emma Leahy and Karen Gearon with the second and third players ending on 38 points.
ON THE GREENS PITCH AND PUTT: The big day for Deerpark, Killarney, is here as they host the National Youth Championships this Saturday, August 20th,for the first time since 2011. All the action takes place on the one day to save costs with four different competitions being decided. The Tralee club will be represented in the u20 Championships and in the Girls competition. It’s a big weekend for the Tralee Pitch and Putt club as they are hosting their Scratch Cup this weekend as well. The Timesheet is open at the club and PPI members are asked to book their tee times.
Tralee District Board Under 15 with Management of Ed Lacey, John Brosnan & Morgan O Connell. On Wednesday evening of Aug 10th, they defeated West Kerry by 2-18 to 2-11. This was their 2nd win of the competition so far.
IN THE CAR: Tralee is set to host a car show and run dedicated exclusively to Italian cars and motocycles. Automobil Italia Tralee will take place on Friday and Saturday September 16th and 17th. The event will kick off with a meet and greet at the FBD and Peever Slye Cotter car parks on the Dan Spring Road starting at 6pm on Friday evening. the Greenmount Cycling Academy with a complete suite of races from the Fun Under 8th to the Masters. In the Masters Championship race where the M50/M60 riders got a half lap advantage it was from the M40’s that the medal winners came from. Tralee Manor West’s Cathal Moynihan was prominent all race and finished with the bronze medal behind two Greenmount riders – Evaldas Stankevicius and Barry Sutton. Well done to Killarney CC’s Lorcan Daly and Conor Kissane who took gold and silver in the Elite Men’s race with Killarney CC also taking the team prize. Josie Knight who is well known from her time in West Kerry was in action with the UK team at the Europeans picking up two 4th place finishes including one in the Pursuit.

IN THE RING: The Tralee Boxing Club were delighted with the way the HER Outdoors Week went where they hosted free non-contact ladies only Boxing on the Beach. The weather was great and hopefully some of those that took part will get involved in the club. TBC has undertaken a number of projects throughout the summer to welcome our Ukrainian neighbours to Tralee the club and now have a whole new group of boxers. To the delight of the coaches the new members presented them with hand designed tee-shirts.
The position of trainee boxing coach for the 2022-23 season is still open. No experience in boxing is needed as full training will be given. But a background in fitness, nutrition and being comfortable in training adults and young boxers would be ideal. Further details are available from Pat on 086 194 2824 or Lynda on 087 766 3406.
