EVERYTHING’S COMING UP ROSES! LEGAL MATTERS CORNER MIRIAM MC GILLICUDDY ANSWERS YOUR LEGAL QUERIES
NOISY NEIGHBOURS Heather and Phil have been living in their estate for 7 years now, they are very happy there as it is such a great place to raise their children, unfortunately their neighbour has rented out his house and new tenants have moved in that are making noise all night. What exactly are Heather and Phil’s options in this matter? Miriam says ; The first thing they should do is talk to their neighbour about the noise and explain how it is affecting them and their children – it may be wise to keep a diary of any contacts including date and time, content of the conversation, tone of the conversation etc. Keeping a noise diary is important for them also, it can help to build a better picture of the disturbance if they include times, length, and the effect it had on them, like if it disturbed their sleep, if other neighbours heard the noise, if it woke up their children. Their isn’t really a need to involve the Gardaí at this stage so after direct contact with the tenants Heather and Phil should contact the owner of the property and if the owner/Landlord does not sort it out they would then go to the Residential Tenancies Board (RTB). The RTB has been invaluable for taking pressure off the the Courts for the vast majority of Landlord and Tenant disputes. It has a quasi-judicial role, so the RTB remains strictly impartial and does not provide advice to either party in dispute beyond general information, in relation to the Residential Tenancies Act, but they will deal with dispute resolution in mediation, getting both parties to communicate with each other to find a common resolve and adjudication where both parties tell their side of the story in a courtroom like setting and a decision is made by the RTB on the best plan of action. Making a complaint like this really is a civil matter but if the situation takes a turn for the worse, that is and the neighbour’s behaviour causes fear, danger, injury or loss, in other words anti-social behaviour then is it time to phone the Gardaí. Heather and Phil could also bring a complaint to the District Court. Legal Quip: Love thy neighbour but keep a large fence.

Medical Matters HOW TO PREVENT WRINKLES (AND SKIN CANCER) Dr David Buckley These warm sunny days put almost everyone in good humour. We can put on our summer clothes and enjoy more time outdoors with sports or hobbies. Small amounts of sun on our skin (10 -20 minutes) can be good for us and help us to make vitamin D which keeps our bones strong. However, too much ultraviolet light (UVL) on the skin form sun or sun beds can cause problems such as sunburn or cold sores. Constant exposure to UVL over months and years can lead to more serious problems such as skin cancer. It can also cause premature ageing of the skin leading to wrinkles and sagging of the skin as we get older, especially on the face and neck. Smoking will make wrinkles even worse. The best way to avoid wrinkles or to prevent them from getting worse is to protect the skin from too much sun and avoid sun beds. There is no such thing as a safe tan. Tanning is a sign that the skin is being damaged. “Fake tans” are safe but don’t protect you from the damaging rays of the sun.
The safest sun protection is to cover up in the sunny weather in spring, summer and autumn by wearing appropriate clothing and sitting in the shade, especially in the middle of the day. Sun blocks will also help. They are rated according to their Sun Protection Factor (SPF). People with fair skin who burn easily, babies, those who spend allot of time outdoors or already have sun damaged skin and those who want to prevent wrinkles should wear a total sun block (factor 50) on the exposed skin. These high factor SPFs should be applied even on cloudy days and especially if travelling to a sunny country. This will allow you to spend 50 times more time in the sun before burning if applied generously and reapplied every 2 hours which, of course, nobody does! A wide brim hat is also “factor 50” but is less messy, cheaper and can be reused every summer. If you are being really careful with hats and sun blocks it is a good idea to consider taking a vitamin D supplement, especially in the winter.

EVERYTHING’S COMING UP ROSES! Chris Selected Again To Perform At The Rose Ball Gig! The Premier Social Event in Kerry!!
Once again ,well known DJ Chris Shortt, has been selected to entertain the Roses at this years gala event ,The Rose Ball in the Dome on Friday 17th August. He also joins MC Brian Hurley on Thursday night (Aug 16th) in the Dome with the Celebration of Roses However Chris is no stranger to this event having performed as the official “Rose ball DJ” for the last number of years! I have so many memories of the Dome.. Micky Harte
joining me on stage singing “we’ve got the world tonight “ to a huge crowd... Also I remember performing when there was no big Dome for a few years and the Rose Ball took place in the Brandon Hotel ...There was great support from the Carlow people that year !
“I am delighted to have been selected AGAIN to perform at the Gala Rose Ball Event ,it was an honour some years ago to be asked to perform at the 50th anniversary Rose ball and its an honour again to continue to be asked back ..it shows I must be doing something right!!! .”The Rose Ball is a very spectacular night and should be on everybodys bucket list !.The organising committee raise the bar each year to make it even more special for the new Roses... and they certainly do... I know... I see it each year and each year is different! There are always familiar faces there and plenty of new ones... many have become
friends over the years ! It is great to have followed bands such as Aslan,Paddy Cole,Abbaesque, Bjorn Again,Brass & Co etc over the years. This year in particular I think ,everybody in the local entertainment committee have surpassed themselves with the even larger
FREE entertainment line-up happening all over the streets of Tralee. WATCH OUT TRALEE for Chris at the Rose Ball ONCE AGAIN this year!!
Minister Griffin To Open Culloty Gathering in September Preparations for a Gathering of the descendants of the Cullotys of Currovough North are well underway for a special day on Sunday September 23rd, when the local, national and International members of this Culloty family will converge on Ballyroe Heights Hotel for a celebration of their ancestors and family history. The townlands of Currovough North are home to a branch of the Culloty family in Kerry that has survived and expanded over a verifiable period of almost 220 years, dating from 1799. In that period of time the Culloty name and the Culloty

genes have thrived both at home and abroad. Today the Culloty DNA exists proudly in Kerry, in Ireland, in England, in America, Canada, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand. The journey of researching family history began in earnest for Mike Cullotywho had already started work on the project with T J Culloty of Currovoughwhen New Zealander Jenny Baldwin made contact in early November 2017. Jenny is a great granddaughter of Catherine Culloty of Currovough, who immigrated to New Zealand in 1883, and has been researching and piecing together her family history for almost 40 years. A search on Facebook for “Cullotys of Gurrane” resulted finally in contact between Jenny and Mike, who learned that Jenny had come to Ireland on her honeymoon in 1978, with her Welsh born husband Gwylym in search of a Culloty shop/pub at the corner of 104 Rock St and 1-3 Pembroke Street.
Friday 10th August 2018
This location (currently Dairymaster) was always referred to as “Cullotys Corner” by the local community of the early 20th century and older people remember it as such to this day. When Jenny and Gwylym informed Mike of their plans to visit Ireland for their 40th wedding anniversary and to again come to Tralee, the seed for the idea of a Culloty Gathering was sown. “It has been a fantastic journey and an amazing experience as we tried to piece together the family links throughout
the generations to the present day”, said Mike. “Jenny has brought an incredible amount of information together on this family’s past from everything available on public record. I was utterly amazed that someone in New Zealand knew far more about our ancestors than anyone here at home and equally amazed to learn so much about the lives of the people in our past from whom we are descended. It is truly remarkable”.

a regional Cup-Final on Saturday and the Senior Squad win another Cup-Final on Sunday, does that qualify as ‘sensational’? Well, that’s exactly what Kerry Cricket achieved this last weekend. For the Junior squad who won the T20 tournament in June, the Junior Cup was their second Munster Cricket trophy of the season, while the seniors grabbed the Munster Senior Cup for the first time in Kerry Cricket’s history. Remarkably, both the Junior Final held at the Oyster Oval, Spa and the Senior Final at The Marydyke, Cork were played against the same opposition, Cork Harlequins (Juniors and Seniors) - and Kerry won both fiercely fought matches by the same 4 wicket margin! Commiserations to Quins who played superb cricket at both levels. Speaking after the final in Cork on Sunday, Umpire Ger O’Sullivan said, “This was one of the best Senior finals ever, not only a great match, but a great advert for cricket.”
20 of Tralee’s bars and hotels will play a key role once again the Rose of Tralee International Festival when they host the families and friends of the 57 Roses who will be taking part in this year’s event. In return for being “twinned” with the Roses, each of bars in question has made a welcome contribution towards the €355,000 cost of providing the Street Entertainment for the Festival. The main “Pub Twinning” event will take place from 3.30pm to 4.30pm on Sunday 19th August when the Roses will visit their respective host pubs and offer an opportunity for the general public to grab a selfie and an autograph in hospitable surroundings. The Executive Chair of the Rose of Tralee International Festival, Anthony O’Gara, said: “Tralee is famous for its pubs and the warm welcome that they extend to locals and visitors from all over the world throughout the Festival. On behalf of our Roses, their families, our Centres and wider Festival Team, I’d like to thank the pubs who have sponsored this year’s Pub Twinning event. We appreciate the generosity and hospitality afforded to our visitors and our colleagues.” This year’s Pub Twinning participants include: • Paddy Macs • An Cearnóg • Sean Ógs • An Teach Beag • The Abbey Inn • Baily’s Corner • The Ashe Hotel • Betty’s Bar • The Blasket • Hennessy’s • The Castle Bar • Jack Macs • The Grand Hotel • Kirby’s Brogue Inn • The Greyhound Bar • Linnanes • The Imperial Hotel • Meadowlands Hotel • The Munster Bar • No 4 On The Square Hundreds of people who will travel to Tralee to support the Roses are looking forward to making the Twinned Pubs their ideal meeting point and base for the duration of the Festival. EVERYTHING’S COMING UP ROSES! Big Wheel returns to Birds Bizarre this Festival! Throughout the Summer months Birds Amusements is an integral part of many of Kerry’s festivals including the Rose of Tralee International Festival. The Bird family have presented their fun fair at the annual Rose of Tralee International Festival for the last 57 years having missed the very first Festival due to prior commitments.
Continuing a long tradition established by their Grandparents, the current members of the Bird family have taken up the task of presenting a family focused fun fair affectionately called Bird’s Bizarre in Kerry. Located in the town centre at both the Brandon Car Park and Ivy Terrace Car Park the Fun Fair is easily accessible. This year the Bird’s have successfully secured the Hang Over to compliment the line-up of family assorted fairground attractions. The Giant Wheel that rises 40 meters above the fairground, offering breathtaking panoramic views
of the town and surrounding area, also makes a welcome return. Not neglecting the teenage fans either, there is the Take Off and Zero Gravity attractions which have special appeal for the adrenaline junkies out there.
The firm favourites such as the Dodgems and Waltzer will also be present as will the Jumping Frog and Twister attractions. For those less adventurous there are a host of other attractions to experience along with an immense assortment of juvenile attractions for the smaller children. Initially opening in the Brandon Car Park from 10th August is what we describe as Mini Bird’s, is a preview of some of the attractions appearing at this year’s festival. The huge assortment of attractions being presented this year will appear from 15th August until Sunday 26th August.

Cahill Wants More Money for Students! Fianna Fail Councillor Michael Cahill has called on the Government and the Minister for Education to increase the Student Grant (SUSI) as a matter of extreme urgency. Councillor Michael Cahill who has raised this important matter said many families and students are experiencing extreme financial hardship with the cost of Education and in particular the rising cost of accommodation, with rents increasing on almost a monthly basis. The Killorglin Councillor said this is leading to an ever increasing number of students having to optout of College. “I am aware of students who have opted out of College because their families could no longer afford
the increased costs and I have been contacted by other families in recent times that are seriously considering having to do the same” stated Councillor Cahill. “This Government needs to take Education seriously and the only way of doing this is by increasing the SUSI grant as a matter of priority, stated the Fianna Fail Councillor. That Kerry County Council call on the Minister for Education and the Government to help the many families and students who are experiencing extreme financial hardship with the cost of Education and in particular the rising cost of accommodation, with rents increasing on almost a monthly basis which has led
to an ever increasing number of students having to opt-out of College by increasing the

EVERYTHING’S COMING UP ROSES! 600 marching band performers to entertain in Roses Parade UPLIFTING, inspirational, nostalgic and entertaining are just some of the adjectives to describe the 13 marching bands comprising 600 people that will perform at the 2018 Rose of Tralee International Festival. Nine bands will take part in the Parade of Roses on Saturday 18th August, two of which will be travelling from overseas, while the Garda Band will lead the Sunday parade before their annual recital on the Denny Street stage on the same day. The Operations Manager for the Rose of Tralee International Festival, Oliver Hurley, said: “We are honoured that so many marching bands from Ireland and abroad have chosen the Rose of Tralee International Festival as their primary tour event of the year. It’s a major undertaking for the bands, many of whom rely on the goodwill of their local communities to help finance their travel and accommodation costs

associated with performing at the Rose of Tralee. We are grateful to our friends in the KDYS, the Scouts Hall and Austin Stacks GAA Club for providing accommodation for a number of the visiting marching bands.” Irish Thunder Pipes and Drums (Éireannach Toirneach) is part of the AOH, Notre Dame Division 1 of Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, USA. It is a 35-piece group who will perform in Tralee with support from a further entourage of 60 people who also make the journey across the Atlantic to be at the Rose of Tralee. The band, led by Pipe Major Cullen Kirkpatrick, along with Pipe Sergeants Joe Cassidy, Bob Kirkpatrick, and Frank Larkin, Drum Sergeant Andrew Duncan, Band President Sean Murray, and Drum Major Pete Hand, is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year. Irish Thunder performs in the greater Philadelphia area, but also has travelled to other states and here in Ireland as well. The band performs in

exhibitions, festivals and parades including two of the largest St. Patrick’s Day parades in the U.S., New York City and Savannah, Georgia. Irish Thunder prides itself on giving back to the community including donating their time, talent and money to various charitable organizations and benefits.” In addition to the nine marching bands that will have taken part in the parade on Saturday night, The Blarney Brass and Reed Band from Cork, The Gleneagle Concert Band from Killarney, and the Garda Band will join them for the Sunday parade. Another group, the Wild Rovers Accordion Band, will be in Tralee for some street performances as well as some indoor gigs in a few local
pubs over the weekend of the Festival. “Our Festival has long been associated with travelling marching bands who enjoy the pageantry and excitement of the Rose of Tralee,” said Oliver Hurley. Full details of all parades routes, starting times and band recitals are available from www.roseoftralee.ie, the Rose of Tralee Web-app which can be downloaded from iTunes and Google Play Store or from the Official Festival Brochure which is widely available.

Bexblah Beauty HELLO BEAUTIFUL PEOPLE! I HOPE YOU’RE ALL HAVING AN AMAZING WEEK. Recently I have been SO happy with my skin - as in like it has been SO clear. I’ve been posting a lot of “no makeup selfies” on Instagram and have been getting LOOOOOOADS of questions about what I’m currently using. These are the products I use everyday.
LA ROCHE POSAY EFFACLAR DUO+ WITH SPF - Obsessed
KIEHLS ULTRA FACIAL MOISTURISER - Ever
since I saw Makeup By Mario using this in his Masterclass its the only moisturiser that I’ve used. I love it!
with this, highly recommend it to anyone with acne prone skin. I use it every day before moisturising. This also has SPF 30 so that’s ideal.
KIEHLS MIDNIGHT RECOVERY CONCENTRATE - I have been using this every night & I
NEUTROGENA DEEP CLEAN OIL FREE GENTLE SCRUB - The newest
addition to my skincare routine. I do this every second day and oh my god, the texture of my skin is SOOOO SOFT. Also my pores (which are normally huge) aren’t as visible or blocked.
absolutely love how my skin is looking. Kiehls is definitely one of my favourite skincare brands.
KIEHLS CALENDULA FACE WASH
- I cleanse my face with this everyday morning and night & I’ve been using it for over 2 years. Obsessed.
PIXI GLOW TONIC - I got this product in travel size from the gals at Cloud 10. I use it in the mornings for my toner and I find my skin looks a lot brighter and glowy.

FITNESS!
HELLO MY STRONG STRONG FRIENDS! I hope you’re all having a great week. This week I just wanted to talk about the time of year we’re at currently. This time of year is a tricky one with regards to fitness and health, summer is in full swing… and everyone and their mother’s are talking about the lastest diet, no carbs til marbs, and whatever other fads are going around! They also think that whatever they’re doing is the best thing yet and EVERYONE needs to do it.
you’re probably going to keep pushing the Monday back further and further, Monday will actually be the symbol of your procrastination rather than anything else.
You hear phrases like, “come monday now I’m giving up the bread”
And trust me, I know. It’s 1000 percent easier said than done… But once you want it and want to do it for you and you only, the rest comes easy.
Another thing, why wait til Monday? Monday is just a day. If you really want to get healthy/loose fat/gain muscle why not start as soon as possible?! Who cares what day it is! If you’re going to put it off til Monday,
If you know you’re trying your best and you feel you’re informed about your nutrition, keep it up! Don’t fall into any fad diets! Remember, they don’t work long term and they’re most definitely not good for your health!
If you’re unsure about what to do, there are SO many health and fitness facilities in Tralee to suit absolutely everyone, so get out there and find the one for you.
Less Guilty Cookies On another note, I have a “Less Guilty Cookies” recipe for you all this week! I tried them this week and I would highly recommend. I got this recipe from ChocolateCoveredKatie.com, check out the website she has so many recipes!! • • • • • • • • • •
Oat flour (140g) 1/4 tsp salt 1/2 tsp baking soda 4 tbsp coconut sugar (brown sugar will also work) 4 tbsp xylitol or evaporated cane juice (white sugar will also work) 1/4 to 1/3 cup chopped macadamia nuts (or walnuts) 3 tbsp to 1/2 cup chocolate chips (Throw in a big handful. I never bother to measure.) 1 tsp pure vanilla extract 2 tbsp vegetable or melted coconut oil 3-5 tbsp milk of choice, as needed
Instructions
Healthy Chocolate Chip Cookies Recipe: Preheat oven. Combine all dry ingredients and mix very well. Add wet, and form into a big ball. Now make little balls from the big one. For soft cookies, refrigerate until cold (otherwise, just bake right away). Bake 7 minutes, or until they’ve spread out and look just a little undercooked. Remove from oven when they’re still a little undercooked, then it’s important to let cookies cool at least 10 minutes before trying to remove from tray, as they’ll continue to cook while cooling. For soft cookies, store in a lidded plastic container. For crispy cookies, store in a lidded glass container.

HEALTHY RECIPES for 2018
Tomatoes oh lovely tomatoes and I don’t mean the ones in supermarket with no smell or taste but fresh off the vine in the polly tunnel, the smell is magnificent
HONEY-TOMATO BRUSCHETTA WITH RICOTTA INGREDIENTS • • • • • • • • • •
2 pints cherry or grape tomatoes, halved lengthwise 1 1/2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil 2 tablespoons honey 2 teaspoons thyme leaves 1 teaspoon sea salt 1/8 teaspoon freshly ground pepper 12 baguette slices, cut 1/2 inch thick on the bias 1 cup fresh ricotta (8 ounces) I use once upon a cheese ricotta Raw honey
•
6 basil leaves, thinly sliced or torn
Preheat the oven to 160c. Line a large rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper. In a large bowl, toss the tomatoes with the olive oil, honey, thyme leaves, salt and pepper. Scrape the tomatoes onto the prepared baking sheet and turn them cut side up. Bake the tomatoes for about 1 hour and 25 minutes, until they begin to shrivel and brown. Let cool. Preheat the grill. Spread out the baguette slices on a baking sheet. Grill for about 30 seconds on each side, until the edges are golden brown Spread the ricotta over the baguette slices and top with the slow-roasted tomatoes. Lightly drizzle the tomatoes with the honey, sprinkle with the sliced basil and serve with additional raw honey on the side. Make Ahead The roasted tomatoes can be refrigerated for up to 2 days. Bring to room temperature before serving.
SPICY TOMATO SAUCE
This will coat 1 pound of pasta. Cooked tomatoes are a good source of lycopene, a compound that fights cancer.
INGREDIENTS • • • • • • • •
2 pounds tomatoes, peeled and halved 3 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil 1/2 cup thinly sliced onion 2 large garlic cloves, thinly sliced 1/2 teaspoon crushed red pepper Salt 1 tablespoon minced basil 1/2 tablespoon minced mint
Scoop the seeds from the tomatoes into a strainer set over a bowl and press on the seeds to extract as much juice as possible. Coarsely chop the tomatoes and add them to the juice.Heat the oil in a large pan until shimmering. Add the onion and cook over moderately high heat, stirring, until softened and just brown, about 5 minutes. Stir in the garlic and cook for 1 minute. IT’S ONLY A JOKE PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP AND HIS DRIVER WERE CRUISING ALONG A COUNTRY ROAD
President Donald Trump and his driver were cruising along a country road one night when all of a sudden they hit a pig, killing it instantly. Trump told his driver to go up to the farmhouse and explain to the owners what had happened. About one hour later Trump sees his driver staggering back to the car with a bottle of wine in one hand, a cigar in the other and his clothes all ripped and torn. “What happened to you?” asked Trump “Well, the Farmer gave me the wine, his wife gave me the cigar and his 19-yearold daughter made mad passionate love to me.” “My God, what did you tell them?” asks Trump. The driver replies, “I’m president Donald Trump’s driver, and I just killed the pig.”
THREE BROTHERS AGE 92, 94 AND 96 LIVE IN A HOUSE TOGETHER.
One night the 96 year old draws a bath, puts his foot in and pauses. He yells down the stairs, “Was I getting in or out of the bath?” The 94 year old yells back, “I don’t know, I’ll come up and see.” He starts up the stairs and pauses, then he yells, “Was I going up the stairs or coming down?” The 92 year old was sitting at the kitchen table having coffee listening to his brothers. He shakes his head and says, “I sure hope I never get that forgetful.” He knocks on wood for good luck. He then yells, “I’ll come up and help both of you as soon as I see who’s at the door.”

A MAN WAS STOPPED BY A GAME WARDEN IN NORTHERN MINNESOTA RECENTLY WITH TWO BUCKETS OF FISH LEAVING A LAKE WELL KNOWN FOR ITS FISHING. The game warden asked the man, “Do you have a license to catch those fish?” The man replied to the game warden, “No, sir. These are my pet fish.” “Pet fish?!” the warden replied. “Yes, sir. Every night I take these fish down to the lake and let them swim around for a while. I whistle and they jump back into their buckets, and I take em home.” “That’s a bunch of baloney! Fish can’t do that!” The man looked at the game warden for a moment, and then said, “Here, I’ll show you. It really works.” “Ok I’ve GOT to see this!” the game warden replied. The man poured the fish in to the water and stood and waited. After several minutes, the game warden turned to the man and said, “Well?” “Well, what?” the man asked. “When are you going to call them back?” the game warden prompted. “Call who back?” the man asked. “The FISH.” the game warden replied “What fish?” the man asked.

EVERYTHING’S COMING UP ROSES! VOLKSWAGEN REVEALS 2019 GRAND CALIFORNIA – THE ULTIMATE GO-ANYWHERE ADVENTURE CAMPER This is it. The Volkswagen Grand California.
You’ll probably recognise it as the California XXL, VW’s concept camper that everybody has been hoping will become a production vehicle for around two years. This is a motorhome with a toilet and shower. It’s rare to have these amenities in a vehicle this tiny but we think it’s an extremely important feature for people travelling long distances. As well as a bed, a bunk for children, the aforementioned loo, and a comfortable interior, the Grand California boasts cooking facilities and a raft of high-tech gizmos for the modern family camping trip. You can even get it with four-wheel-drive. Prices have yet to be revealed, and we expect to receive more details at the end of the year.
2019 PORSCHE TAYCAN: SPECS FOR PRODUCTION MISSION E CONFIRMED
Porsche is targeting more than 600bhp, 310 miles of range and 350kW charging compatibility with its first EV Revealed at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 2015, the Taycan, wihch builds on the Mission E Concept, will be revealed in full early next year. Prototypes of the Taycan electric saloon have been undergoing development testing for several months and Porsche has revealed it has built over 100 test mules, which are undergoing assessment across the globe. Although the Taycan shares a similar silhouette to the Panamera saloon, the Tesla Model S rival will be more compact; entry-level versions priced between £60,000 and £70,000 mean it will carry only a small premium over its main rival. The Taycan will develop over 600bhp via a lithium-ion battery pack denser than anything Tesla currently offers, rated at 270 watt-hours per kilogram. Two permanently excited synchronous electric motors (PSM), one on each axle, will provide drive. The PSM motors are derived from Porsche’s Le Mans winning 919 LMP1 car, the marque claiming that the key advantage offered by PSM is compact packaging and weight saving.Porsche claims this powertrain will allow the Taycan production car to cover 0-62mph in under 3.5 seconds and 0-124mph in under 12s before hitting a top speed of 155mph. Crucially, we’re told the performance will be repeatable with the electric car able to accelerate hard ‘over and over again without losing performance’ In terms of range, the target is for the Porsche Taycan cover upwards of 300 miles on a single charge and Porsche says the 800-volt system can take on 62 miles of charge in just 4 minutes, or almost 250 miles in 15 minutes. Of course, these figures are entirely dependent on the availability of 350kW CCS chargers compatible with Porsche’s 800v system. At present, the IONTY network is expanding across Europe and building chargers capable of delivering such voltages, and Porsche has plans to deploy 500 of its own chargers across the United States in the coming years. This version of the Taycan is expected to be the flagship model but Porsche has invested a further 500million Euros (£437million) to develop additional versions of the car. The variants, of which there is likely to be three, will vary from around 400bhp up to 600bhp.

Following the arrest of its chief executive, Rupert Stadler, Audi has delayed the launch of its e-tron EV and switched the event to the US from Brussels. Great to see that Romain Dumas has smashed the outright record at Pike’s Peak in an electric Volkswagen racer. Developed by the marque’s motorsport division, the 671bhp I.D. R Pikes Peak electric prototype was, as I reported here in the spring, made to tackle Colorado’s famous international Hill Climb. It’s 12.42 miles (20km approx), has 156 turns and represents a brutal surge to a 4,300-metre summit. But Le Mans 24 Hours race winner Dumas (he took overall Pikes Peak victories in 2014/16/17 in a Norma M20D), drove the ID R into the record books with a time of 7 mins 57.148 sec, beating the existing 8mins 13.878 secs. EVERYTHING’S COMING UP ROSES!
with “The Voice” Pat Harnett
FAI NATIONAl P.R.O. OF THE YEAR THE UPS AND DOWNS OF SPORT: Firstly it would not be right to begin any sports column this week without writing a bit about the Irish Women’s Hockey team. What a tournament they had and while the final did not go their way it really was a case of they had won even if they didn’t bring home the World Cup. If anyone has not being following their progress the Irish team came into the tournament ranked 16th in the world – the second lowest in the competition and reached the decider where they did go down to reigning champions Spain. And while hockey is a minority sport in Ireland it is a truly world -wide sport. Sometimes a group of players will come together that will gel and as coach Graham Shaw said “these girls are the best of friends and stick together through thick and thin.” And they have had some disappointments including missing out on the London Olympics. There has been talk in the media about the fact that the girls had to raise money to play for Ireland with the figure of e550 being mentioned. But while in an ideal world this should not be the case needs must for smaller sporting organising in the country. And listening to some of the players who recently retired from representing Ireland at hockey they said they turned this into a positive and having to raise the money brought them closer together as a group. The girls called on all their business and sports contacts and ran golf classic. The next ingredient you need is a coach and coaching staff that put together a programme that the players can buy into. Of course and coach would love to have his squad on a full time basis but these players in the majority are part time. So training and games have to be organised around that. And then when you go to a tournament properly prepared sometimes momentum takes over. In the Schoolboys Girls League in Kerry we have an idea of what this is like following out Kennedy Cup win a couple of years ago. Kerry were not amongst those who were mentioned as possible winners but once the Group games got started you could see that
38

something special was beginning to take shape. The group had total belief in themselves and were willing to take all instructions on board. This continued into the play-offs and through a huge semi-final battle with Limerick Desmond that went to the 11th penalty before our injured captain had to be helped up to the spot but still had the belief to stick the penalty. In the final against the high flying and rarely beaten DDSL (Dublin District Schoolboys League) our squad did not waiver and while it is easy to say afterwards everyone involved with Kerry on that day believed that they would win and win they did. Many of these players are still proving that they are winners as at least 7 have featured on the Kerry minor team that are in the All Ireland semi-final against Roscommon this weekend and hopefully will go all the way in that competition. What I am trying to say is that in any sport if you can get the fundamentals right with players and build a squad that buy into what you want to do anything is possible. Goals are different at all levels and goals are achievable. It might not always be about winning – it could be about reaching the final of a competition, about getting all players to a certain level or whatever it is. If squads need to have their beliefs reinforced then tell them the story of the 2018 Hockey Women’s World Cup where Ireland reached the final being the first ever senior team from the country to do so. Hopefully every squad out their reaches their own goal – that’s all any coach can ask of his players. THE OTHER SIDE OF SPORT: For Kerry GAA fans it was certainly a case of things not going to plan and not reaching their goal. In the end Kerry did see off Kildare but the damage in the Super 8’s done before this weekend’s game. At this time there is no need to go back over those games. This will be the first task of the new Kerry management as Eamonn Fitzmaurice and his back room team have stepped down. Eamonn was in charge for 6 years and the first thing to say is that if the manager of any of the other Friday 10th August 2018
30 counties, Dublin excluded, won his Provincial title 6 times in a row, won an All Ireland and won the National League they would be feted. But this is Kerry and patience by the supporters for the ultimate victory is short as Eamonn referred to in his last press conference. And time is the thing that’s needed to have a successful squad that I didn’t mention above. And that is what Eamonn has asked for the new management. He said that this was not afforded to the Kerry set-up this year even if they did have 7 debutants. Yes players like David Clifford and Sean O’Shea and others did well but they need time to bed into a senior set-up and that is the positive that can be taken from this year. Some say it would have been productive to see how Kerry would have gotten on against Dublin in Croke Park next week while others say this would have been a step too far for where the team are at at the moment and getting beaten (well?) by a high flying Dublin team would be a set-back. And I have to say I agree with the latter argument. Going up against the best when you are not at that level can lead to a difficult game that sometimes affects players confidence going forward. Eamonn showed the kind of man he is by making his stepping down all about what was right for the players and not about him. He still had two years left on his ‘contract’ with Kerry but he felt that the best thing for the players was a new voice in the dressing room. As to who that voice will be for the start of the League the speculation has already started. I would assume that the County Board won’t go outside the county – but would that be a bad thing? By only looking inside the county it means that the pool of choice is small but that does not mean it is not talented. That’s for the future and of course as will all things sport there will be many and varied opinions. Finally on Eamonn’s retirement it was very disappointing to hear him talk about the abuse – both verbal and written- that he and others had to contend with. He also commented on the negativity following the Galway game and how difficult it is for young players to have to hear this. There is certainly no place for ‘hate’
letters and other abuse of managers and players. Yes supporters are entitled to opinions and yes these will sometimes not be what the players or managers will want to hear but supporters must also realise there is a line. So for this season the senior season is over as is the u20’s so it is down to the minors to bring home the silverware. But as Eamonn said it is all about leaving the set-up in a better place than when one set out and I think the most recent management team did that – for all their faults. HURLERS WIN ALL IRELAND WHILE MINOR HOPE TO TAKE A STEP CLOSER TO THEIRS: Kerry fans did have something to cheer about at the weekend when the hurlers retained their Junior B hurling title defeating Derry. Kerry hurling’s stock on the national stage continues to reach new heights which shows that the work that is being put in is certainly paying off. PARNELL’S NEWS: Tralee Parnells take part in the Kerry minor hurling Championship 2018 for the first time ever. But they have been given a tough opening draw as they were paired with Crotta O’Neills, the winners of the last two Championships. The game took place in mid-week and we will have the result next week. The u12 Boys put in a great performance in the North Kerry blitz that took place on Lixnaw. They played Crotta, Lixnaw, Ballyduff and St Brendan’s in the Blitz which is great preparation for Phase 2 of the County League. The u13 boys hit two late goals to record a deserved draw with Causeway in the North Kerry u13 competition. Playing at home they opened well but Causeway had a six point lead at half time and kept up that lead until the last two minutes when goals from David Chute and Oran Murphy drew the Tralee side level. The u14 girls enjoyed their trip to Kilkenny to take part in an intercounty blitz. Parnell’s went into their u16 Championship Plate quarter final with Lixnaw missing a number of players. Their opponents agreed to play the game at 12 a side and the game was a cracker with Lixnaw winning 5-07 to 3-11. The Tralee Parnells Cul Camp takes place in Caherslee from Monday the 13th to Friday the 17th and bookings are still being taken. AUSTIN STACKS JUVENILE NEWS: The Camp was a great success and the club thanked all those who were involved and is glad that all the players enjoyed the week. The u6’s continue to train every Sunday while the u8’s are enjoying the Bracker Regan League. The u10’s will train as normal this week. The u12’s are heading into the Kelliher’s Toyota Tralee Central League. On the 13th they play

EVERYTHING’S COMING UP ROSES! Laune Rangers in the Nuns’ Field in Division 1. The B’s will play in Division 7 of the competition. The u13’s preparations are going well for the annual Denis O’Connor Lee Strand Tournament which will take place on September 8th and 9th. All the teams that took part last year are back again this year. The u14’s went down to Kerins O’Rahillys in Division 1 of the Central League which leaves a 3 way tie for third spot. After a public draw Na Gaeil will be away to Laune Rangers while Stacks were drawn against Ballymac in a playoff for a semi-final spot. In Division 4 the B’s went down Laune Rangers B in the final but it was a great effort by the whole team to reach the final. The u16’s won the club’s first county title of the year winning the 7-a-side competition in Currans. They were due to play Dr Crokes in the League semi-final in mid-week. ST PAT’S NEWS: There was no winner of the Lotto from the numbers drawn 2,8,26 and 27 with the next Jackpot being e8,700. The draw on Sunday night will be in Skelper’s Quane’s Bar. All members who have Yearly Lotto tickets are asked to renew them as these are an important part of the clubs fundraising needs. New buyers of yearly Lotto tickets are always welcome. The clubs Cul Camp took place this week with the participants enjoying some great coaching and most importantly some fun. The weather was thankfully not as hot as recent times, which was perfect for the GAA activities. The Academy will head to Beale this Sunday with the games beginning at 10.30am.The kids will be looking forward to showing off what the learned at this week’s camp. The u14 Girls will play Churchill at home in their opening game of the North Kerry Ladies League. The u16’s went down to Cordal / Scart in the County League but are into the Division 8 semi-finals where they will face Moyvane / Tarbert. Annascaul/ Lispole await the winners of that semi-final. The Seniors will play their final County League fixture on August the 19th when they travel to Waterville for their Round 11 fixture with the details not announced at the time of going to print. St Brendan’s Board exited the u21 Championship going down to East Kerry 1-13 to 0-11. The management were happy with the effort that all the players put in but they just came up against a better side on the day. The club is delighted for its dual player Jordan Conway who scored 1-01 for the Kerry hurlers in their Junior B Richie McElligott Cup All Ireland success. KERINS O’RAHILLYS NEWS: With Kerry exiting the All Ireland series it will be a busy few weeks for the senior teams. They will play John Mitchels this weekend in the
semi-final of the Lee Strand Town League. The game takes place in Strand Road at 2pm on Sunday. They will play the final round of the County League the following week when Dingle will be the visitors. A win or a draw will see the team qualify for the final against Dr Crokes. August 25th is the date for the first round of the County Championship when they play Feale Rangers with no venue decided yet. The 2nd round will take place on Saturday September 1st. One of the players on that senior team is Shane McElligott who swopped the football for the hurl and won his medal with the victorious u21B side. The Juniors were due to play Austin Stacks in mid-week while the draws for the Molyneaux and Barrett Cups are set to take place next week with games set for the 17th and 24th. In the Junior section the u12 Girls host Glanmire this Saturday at Strand Road while the u13 Girls played Listowel Emmets in their Championship opener. The u14 Girls North Kerry League commences this week with the club having two teams entered. The Blues have a bye and are away to Churchill the following week while the Strand Road Girls also have a bye and then go to Duagh next week. The u15’s and the u16 Girls are also set for their championships which get underway in the coming weeks. The club will hold a Celebrity Mamas 7 a side blitz at the end of September with more details to follow. The club is also bag packing next Thursday August 16th in Garvey’s Supervalu Tralee. There was no winner of the Lotto from the numbers drawn 13, 21, 26 and 28 with the next jackpot being e5,200. KERRY DEVELOPMENT SQUAD: The Kerry u13, u14 and u15 Girls development squads are now training at the weekends. KERRY CAMOGIE GOT DOWN TO OFFALY BUT WERE ALREADY QUALIFIED: The Kerry camogie side travelled to Offaly knowing that they were already through to the All-Ireland semi-finals. The home side needed the win and got what they needed winning by 3 points 3-06 to 1-09. Kerry made a number of changes for the game and were always close with a missed penalty the difference in the end. But both sides march on and could possibly meet again in a game with much more at stake. LYNCH CROWNED COUNTY CHAMPION: The Kerry Time Trial League and County Championships provided some excellent racing against the clock over the last few weeks. Excellently organised by George Doyle and his Tralee BC crew there

were a number of records broken and many riders clocked PB’s which shows the strength of Kerry cycling. At the TT County Championships Denis Lynch, who rode professionally with VC La Pomme Marseilles in France, clocked a time of 26.55 to take the title and also the A1 crown to set up a great night for the Sliabh Luachra cycling club. Lynch’s club mate Richard Cleverly clocked the second fastest time and was also the quickest A2 rider while Mike O’Shea from Killorglin CC took third place and was the fastest M40 rider on the night. Multi-talented Suzanne O’Sullivan was the fastest lady during the League and was again unbeatable in the TT County Championship and took the crown in a time of 31.05. Killarney CC’s Aaron O’Donoghue was the quickest un16 boy on the night with Almha Russell Kissane the fastest u16 Girls. The other adult winners on the night were Kieran Coggins of Tralee BC in the Junior category, Ed Murphy in the A3’s, John Crowley in the m50’s and Tom Daly setting a PB in the m60’s. The underage TT County Championships saw the following crowned the winners: Bryan Hannafin and Eabha O’Callaghan in the u12 Boys and Girls and Josh Hewerdine in the u14’s boys. Newcastlewest’s Paul Kennedy had a wonderful League on the TT bike and was again the quickest on the night in a new record of 25.17 but he was not eligible to rider for the CC prizes. The prizes for the League were also given out on the night and as well as the winners there were presentations for those who broke records – Pat Kennedy, Mike Sheehy, Mike O ‘Shea and Tom Daly. TRALEE DUO PART OF 4 KERRY TRIATHLETES TO REPRESENT IRELAND: The 2018 ETU Triathlon Championship takes place in Scotland this weekend and two Tralee athletes are on the squad alongside two other Kerry athletes. Paudie and Caroline Murphy from the town are joined by Currow’s Suzanne O’Sullivan and Majella Diskin who is originally from Mayo but living in Castleisland will join 160 other competitors at the competition from the 9th to the 11th. It’s a busy time for O’Sullivan who added the Donal Walsh Swim to her cycling CC title over the past two weeks. TRALEE RACECOURSE SET FOR THE ROAD OF CAR ENGINES: Kerry motorsports fans will be flocking to the Tralee Racecourse at Ballybeggan this Sunday when the KDMC hold the Jimmy Devane Memorial Autocross. The event is being sponsored by Rentokil and will benefit the Costello Family Fund – which is raising money for the father and daughter who were injured in a recent rally crash. The Autocross is the 7th round of the Friday 10th August 2018
Munster Championship. Sign on and Scrutiny is at from 8am with the first timed run at 10.30am. Competitors will have one practice and 4 timed runs over the 2.2km fast flowing but technical track. GARVEY’S TRALEE WARRIORS PRE-SEASON WIN: Garvey’s Tralee Warriors got their season off to a winning start when they defeated the University of Scranton in new coach Pat Price’s first game in charge. The Warriors will not have the services of star player Trae Pemberton this season as he has moved to the Reading Rockets in the UK. Pemberton won a number of trophies with the Warriors as well as multiple Super League Player of the Month Awards and was also named Import Player of the Year. It will be interesting to see the new line-up that the Warriors will have this season. IT TRALEE STUDENT HEADS TO HANDBALL WORLDS: Kilkenny native Shane Dunne is a Health and Leisure student at the Tralee IT. This weekend he is heading to Minnesota to take part in the World Handball Championships. He went into the Irish championships as 8th seed but won the title to book his place on the plane. Also on the plane are Ballymac’s Danny Riordan and Daire Keane along with Glenbeigh’s Dominick Lynch, John Joe Quirke and Jack O’Shea. KERRY’S YOUNG SOCCER STARS HEAD INTO THE WEST: The final soccer tournament of the summer is underway this week with Kerry being represented by two teams in the u13 competition. The 2005 Elite side are in a Group with Cavan / Monaghan, Clare and Dundalk Schoolboys while the 2005 Boys team take on Finn Harps Academy, Knocknacarra and Mervue FC. The tournament runs until Saturday. In the League of Ireland the 15’s play the last game of their League phase when they are at home to Cork City, the League leaders, at Mounthawk Park at 3pm this Saturday. Kerry have been very competitive all year with very little between the teams ranked 4th to 8th in the League. Following this phase there is a Group phase where the 16 teams that didn’t make it into the top 3 or the 2 next best from the 3 Groups. These 16 teams will be divided into 4 groups of 4. The Kerry 17’s begin a tough programme of games as they are away to Cork on the same day with a 2pm kick-off. This side has been playing well without getting any reward so hopefully things will turn for them.

EVERYTHING’S COMING UP ROSES! THE MIRACLE PRAYER Dear Heart of Jesus in the past I have asked for many favours, this time I ask you this special one (mention favour). Take it dear Heart of Jesus and place it within your Heart where your Father sees it, then in his merciful eyes it will become your favour not mine. Amen. Say this prayer three times for three days and your favour will be granted. Never known to fail. Must promise publication of prayer.
