“SNAPPED ON SOCIAL MEDIA” We pick out some great photos posted on social media each week ...if you have any good ones please send them in... email traleeadvertiser@gmail.com or message us on our Facebook page... Enjoy !

Just in! Elaine does the Fastnet Swim very Fast! Elaine Burrows Dillane completed the Fastnet Swim this week in Cork (approx 23kms) in an unbelievable time of 7hrs and 45 mins... this has to be a record ! Well done Elaine

Great words from Padraig Harnett this week ... ’lets think different“!

The UK’s first socially distant gig happened last night! This is Newcastle but why can’t Killarney look to do a series of concerts. Each “pod” has a family group of 5 max. Use the New Street car park for say 200 pods, open the field at the Cathedral for extra parking and give our wonderful musicians who are being forgotten about by the Government a change to perform. Use local artist and a big headliner like the Coronas, Gavin James, Dermot Kennedy etc. And surely the Government won’t force them off the Covid payment if they do one gig? Time for some inventive thinking to keep our economy ticking over once this rush ends.

Birds Euroshow To Open Family Funfair in Tralee From Saturday 15th August THE Directors of Birds Euroshow funfair have said they are looking forward to opening for business in Kerry for the first time this year and fully intend to demonstrate their new high standards of safety protocols to the community. A family funfair will open at the grounds of Harriers Athletic Club, Dan Spring Road, Tralee from Saturday 15th to Sunday 30th August, operating from 12pm until 8pm daily. Under current Covid-19 regulations for outdoor gatherings, attendances are limited to 200 people and visitors to Birds are advised not to congregate outside the fairground, while parking is not permitted on Dan Spring Road.Birds have permission to open under Phase 3 of the Government’s Reopening Plan which was announced in June. The company chose to defer the commencement of operations in the Kingdom this summer in order to diligently finalise the new operational working plan. Considerable time and

resources have been invested in ensuring that very high standard of new guidelines and protocols could be developed and implemented to ensure the safety of staff and visitors, while also ensuring the fulltime staff under quarantine received their compliance certificates in Covid-19 induction training. Director Don Bird said: “We’ve been proud to support communities in Kerry for over 80 years during which time we have built up a positive relationship with the people of Kerry. They trust us and we are dedicated to maintaining that sentiment when we return to work. Obviously, we cannot operate the same way as we have done in the past. A visit to our fun fair will be very different to ensure our staff and customers are safe. Everyone is accustomed to using hand sanitiser, wearing masks and maintaining social distance in various indoor and outdoor settings. Everything is in place at Birds Funfair as we prepare to open our doors to welcome customers in Kerry.” Customer and staff safety on the fairgrounds have always been the top priority for the Bird family who have introduced a host of HSEapproved sanitation measures to protect everybody from Covid-19. There will be clear signage outlining our Covid-19 preventative measures, Hand sanitization stations at all attractions, social distancing friendly queuing systems, contactless payment option

on all attractions, temperature checks, customer facing staff will be wearing visors, a strict regimented sanitization regime for all common touch points and many more new changes. Our primary concern of the Bird Family is the safety of their staff and visitors and for that reason they have to make many changes to daily operations to ensure that they can provide the highest safety level possible and still be able to provide top class entertainment to the public. “We will open in Tralee next week and in mid-September in Listowel, and while we understand that procedures are subject to change due to the evolving nature of Covid-19, we look forward

to the opportunity to demonstrate to the people in Kerry that we can implement our new safety protocols in such a way that will allow them to experience all the fun of the fair safely” said Don Bird. For more details on Birds Euroshow Covid-19 protocols and opening dates, visit www. Euroshow.ie or find us on Facebook.

Passengers and Profits up last year at Kerry Airport “2019 itself was another successful year following on from a very strong 2018. The PSO (Public Service Obligation) contract for services provided by Aer Lingus Regional as operated by Stobart Air on the Kerry-Dublin route continues to support access for the region to Dublin. This remains a very crucial service and will ensure that Kerry has access to a major hub both in terms of growing tourism and in supporting the region’s economic development.

Again, we must stress the critical importance of the Kerry-Dublin air service to the development and the growth of the economy of the South West region and we hope that this product will continue to get the support it deserves.” says Mr. John Mulhern, CEO of Kerry Airport , commenting on the financials and the on-going operations of the Airport for the year, Commenting on the challenges presented by the Covid-19 pandemic, John Mulhern

said:“Indeed, travel is now ancillary to the incredible efforts being made by so many to keep us safe and well. There is no doubt, when the time is right and it is safe to do so, the Airport will regroup and continue its mission in supporting Kerry and this regions’ economy. Undoubtedly there will be many months, if not years, of toil ahead to recover fully. Kerry Airport will face that challenge unabated.” KERRY Airport has released

the Annual Report & Accounts for the 12-month period ended 31st December 2019 reporting an Operating Profit after Taxation for the period of €1,020,341 as compared to €966,056 in the previous year .He thanked the management and staff for their contribution to a successful year and also the Kerry Airport Chairman Denis Cregan, and his fellow Directors, for their valued input and direction.

Tralee-Fenit Greenway opening vital for next Summer!

53 of Tralee’s Businesses and groups penned an open letter to Kerry County Council this week. They expressed the huge importance of opening the Tralee-Fenit Greenway to our local economy BEFORE next Summer’s Tourist season. Read the letter below:

“We are facing a long winter of uncertainty, but the cold dark nights will be easier on every one if we can look for ward to reaping the benefits of the green way for the entirety of next summer. The benefits are clear and there is very sound economic and social rational to speed up the works on the green way. We urge you to make this hap pen for the sake of the town.” To our council and our councillors we say this, you must get this done! Along side many communities around the country and around the world, we are currently in a state of crisis, and how we rise to this challenge will de fine our town for decades. Tralee has a proud and rich history and those who came be fore us made certain we rode the first waves of prosperity in a free and in dependent republic. It is now our collective responsibility to en sure we do not flounder in the back wash left from the cur rent crisis. It is of ten said that progress is not about taking big steps in the future, but that progress comes about by taking small steps right now. One small step in the right direction for Tralee would be to speed up the works on the Tralee-Fenit Green way and make sure it is completed for June next year. The cur rent estimated completion time is Autumn 2021, and we urge you to expedite the project and complete it be fore next Friday 14th August 2020

summer for the following reasons: 1. Tralee urgently needs a new story to hang our hat on, a new story that will make us stand out, a new story that will gen er ate column inches and help us compete with other markets. 2. The green way will have a very positive impact on the mental health of the people of Tralee. More than ever we need safe open out door spaces for people of all ages and abilities. The green way will lift our spirits. 3. The green way will have a very positive impact on tourism, but we need to start promoting the green way this winter if we are going to reap the benefits next summer. 4. The green way will de liver extra revenues and economic activity for the town and surrounding areas. Tourists will stay here longer and spend more money. 5. Businesses that are hanging on by a thread will fight harder, knowing there is a boost coming next summer, and jobs will be saved. 6. New enter prises will be started to service the green way and jobs will be crated. 7. The green way will make

Tralee an increasingly attractive place to live and work, at a time when people and companies are embracing re mote working. 8. The green way will make Tralee a more attractive place to study and boost our university town appeal. 9. The funding for the green way has al ready been al located. 10. 1The green way will boost morale locally and that positivity will per me ate all areas of our community. It is a good news story will trans late well nationally and internationally.

People of all ages and all abilities will benefit hugely from being able to get out into nature and ad venture safely along the route. High nellies will be re stored, walking boots will be dusted off and new trainers purchased. Businesses will be gin to plan for the arrival of tourists. New enter prises will emerge. People will be gin to dream again. Hope will re place fear.

We are facing a long winter of uncertainty, but the cold dark nights will be easier on every one if we can look for ward to reaping the benefits of the green way for the entirety of next summer.

Recovery Haven’s ‘Celebration of Light’ moves online for Aug 20th With COVID19 playing havoc with charity activities right around the county, cancer support charity, Recovery Haven Kerry, has chosen to move its annual Celebration of Light ceremony online. The charity will host the event on its Facebook page on Thursday, August 20th at 8pm and are inviting the public to join with them for the virtual ceremony which aims to celebrate those touched by cancer and remember those we have lost. The charity, which celebrates its 10th anniversary this year, has been working extremely hard to ensure that the uniqueness of this poignant event remains at the heart of the online ceremony, with all the usual prayers, readings and blessings remaining. Among those taking part in the ceremony include Recovery Haven founder, Marian Barnes, the charity’s patron Dick Spring, 2009 Kerry Rose Sally Anne Leahy and Rose Hotel owner and valued Recovery Haven supporter, Eibhlín Henggler - who will participate in the ceremony from her home in the US. The

virtual event, which has been beautifully compiled by the Ballymac CE scheme, will be MC’d by Sean Lyons and will also feature a performance from the Kerry Choral Union. The emotional release of candles and stones will also form part of the celebration from Banna Strand, with the valued support of Banna Sea Rescue.“While we are extremely disappointed that we cannot hold our event at the beautiful backdrop of Tralee Bay Wetlands this year, we are confident that the significance of this very special event will not be lost in our virtual alternative,” said Recovery Haven PR & Marketing officer, Marisa Reidy. “ “Because people cannot be with us in person and release their candles into the water, we would love for them to join us on Facebook at 8pm on August 20th , light a candle in their home or community and, if they wish, take a photo and tag Recovery Haven on Facebook so we can share and acknowledge their valued

participation,” Marisa added. The charity will be selling special anniversary candles at their house at 5 Haig’s Terrace Tralee on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, August 17, 18 & 19th between 11am and 1pm while a GoFundMe page will also be set up if anyone wishes to donate on the night in lieu of buying their candles directly, Meanwhile,

two intimate Celebration of Light ceremonies will also take place on the same night at Tarbert Pier and Ballyheigue Beach at 8pm, but organisers are stressing that anyone attending these events must please adhere to all social distancing rules and restrictions to ensure the safety of everyone involved.

Beauty

HELLO EVERYONE! Hope you’re all having a great week.

Since I talked all things skincare last week, this week I’m going to be talking about my current haircare routine. Proper haircare is so important for me. I like to use more high end products on my hair because of all the bleach, dyeing and heat it has taken over the years. So here’s all the products I use on my hair currently I wash my hair every 4-5 days, no less than this. .

SHAMPOO & CONDITIONER

For my shampoo and conditioner I’m currently alternating between two different ones. I like to alternate because I feel my hair gets too used to a shampoo and conditioner after a while so it’s good to switch it up. For shampoo and conditioner I’m currently using Sol De Janeiro. For me it’s imperative to use high quality hair products. You can’t expect to have amazing hair if you use hair products that cost less than a cup of decent coffee! There’s no point spending money on your hair in the salon and then treating it badly at home. Sol De Janeiro Brazilian Joia Shampoo & Conditioner: I’m not going to lie, I bought this set because it smells the same as my much loved Sol De Janeiro Brazilian Bum Bum Cream.

The Brazilian Joia Shampoo & Conditioner is designed to double the strength of your strands. Created using patented SOL Seal Technology™, the shampoo benefits from the fortifying properties of plant-based Keratin microbeads, which wrap your locks in a protective shield to help seal up to 74% of split ends. You’ll be treated to a finish that appears smoother and silkier with fewer signs of damage and distress. Boasting a 54% reduction in breakage, the shampoo helps to prevent split ends from forming as quickly in the future. The oil also promotes a lustrous shine, restoring a healthier appearance to hair that’s in need of some pampering. Moisture superhero Coconut Oil takes care of both your scalp and hair, locking in hydration while Cupuaçu Butter battles frizz, leaving you with a sleek, silky finish. Enriched with Sol de Janeiro’s Cheirosa ’62 fragrance, your locks will be left smelling as good as they look. The sweet, comforting scent is made up of rich, gourmand notes like Salted Caramel, Vanilla and Almond, melting into heady Jasmine Petals and Heliotrope for a sumptuous finish. Suitable for all hair types, including coloured. Free from parabens and sulphates.

EXTRA TREATMENTS:

As well as shampoo and conditioner, there are other treatments I use on my hair. Wella Sp Luxe Oil - This gorgeous hair product is designed to smooth and condition the hair inside and out. It contains a combination of oils which work to restore the structure of the hair and and protect the existing Keratin. Tests have shown that after just one application, your hair texture can feel up to 10 times smoother! It smells amazing and is literally like hair perfume.

BEXBLAH

FITNESS!

Hello strong people! I hope you’re all having an amazing week. This week I wanted to give you a little gym update. The gym is going fantastic, like honestly. I have finally got to the stage where I just want to get up and go to the gym first thing in the morning. It’s not me. I used to love sleeping in, and I still do. But I just get a buzz when I go early and get it done. I have been very consistent the past 4 weeks, the most consistent I have been and I am definitely seeing more and more results. Consistency really is key, if you want to drop a lot of body fat, you have to be consistent with both your food plan and your workouts. You have to track what you’re eating and know what you’re eating. I use MyFitnessPal everyday to track how much Protein Carbs and Fat I eat daily, and I’ve found it does make a difference, I’m more conscious of my food and once you get used to it it’s so handy! Even if you go slightly off track and eat say, a slice of Dominos Pizza, you can actually track it on the App.

Rebecca Friday 14th August 2020

In saying that I haven’t become addicted to tracking food and I’m not obsessing over macros and numbers and calories unhealthily, because that’s where it becomes dangerous. I’m eating over 1800 calories a day, and I never go under that. There’s no point eating dangerously low calories to lose weight. Kiki has been changing my workout plans every few weeks, and I’ve found that changing up my workouts to keep my body guessing really has benefits as it doesn’t get used to workouts. For instance, in the weight room, you can perform more reps or sets using the same amount of weight that you typically use. You can perform the same amount of reps with more weight, or you can completely switch up your number of reps and sets. Or, at the end of each workout, you could throw in one of two new moves you haven’t tried in a while. If you run on the treadmill, you could run sprints one day and a slow and steady run the next.

HEALTHY RECIPES for 2020

The taste that is ‘Butter Chicken‘

Did you know that Butter chicken originated from Northern India in 1948? Also known as murg makhani, it is a dish, originating in the Indian subcontinent, of chicken in a mildly spiced tomato sauce. This delightful butter chicken gets its rich and delicious flavor from a combination of yogurt, butter, tomatoes, onions, spices and yoghurt and can be on your Dinner table in just 30 minutes!

BUTTER CHICKEN

Serves 4

INGREDIENTS • • • • • • • • • • •

3/4 cup Greek yogurt 1/4 cup plus 2 tablespoons vindaloo spice 3 tablespoons fresh lemon juice 8 bone-in chicken thighs, skin removed 125g butter 2 large onions, finely chopped Sea salt Pepper One can crushed tomatoes 2/3 cup chicken stock 1 cup heavy cream

METHOD Basmati rice, coriander sprigs and chopped salted roasted cashews, for serving In a large bowl, mix the yogurt with the vindaloo spice and lemon juice. Add the chicken thighs and turn to coat. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate overnight. In a large enameled cast-iron casserole, melt the butter over moderate heat. Add the onions, season with salt and pepper and cook, stirring occasionally, until golden brown, 12 to 15 minutes Add the chicken and its marinade along with the crushed tomatoes and stock to the casserole and bring to a simmer. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the sauce has thickened slightly, 20 minutes. Stir in the cream and simmer until the sauce is flavorful and the chicken is cooked through, 10 to 12 minutes longer. Season with salt and pepper and serve with basmati rice, coriander sprigs and chopped cashews.

IT’S ONLY A JOKE 22

OOPS!

A carpet layer had just finished installing carpet for a lady. He stepped out for a smoke, only to realize he’d lost his cigarettes. In the middle the room, under the carpet, was a bump. “No sense pulling up the entire floor for one pack smokes,” he said to himself. He proceeded to get out his hammer and flattened the hump. As he was cleaning up, the lady came in. “Here,” she said, handing him his cigarette pack. “I found them in the hallway. Now, if only I could find my sweet little hamster.”

WELL I’LL BE ....

A young boy is pulling his wagon up a hill when one of the back wheels falls off and rolls down the hill. The young boy says, “I’ll be darned.” A local pastor heard him and said, “You should not say that. Next time your wheel falls off say, ‘Praise the Lord.’” So the next day the young boy is pulling his wagon up the hill and the wheel falls off and rolls down the hill. The young boy says, “Praise the Lord.” The wheel stops rolling, turns around, rolls back up the hill and puts itself back on the wagon. The young boy being very surprised by this exclaims, “I’ll be darned!”

ROUND N ROUND

You are on a horse, galloping at a constant speed. On your right side is a sharp drop off, and on your left side is an elephant traveling at the same speed as you. Directly in front of you is another galloping horse but your horse is unable to overtake it. Behind you is a lion running at the same speed as you and the horse in front of you. What must you do to safely get out of this highly dangerous situation? Get your drunk butt off the merry-go-round!

HERO

Step 1: Name your iPhone “Titanic.” Step 2: Plug it into your computer. Step 3: When iTunes says “Titanic is syncing,” press cancel. Step 4: Feel like a hero. Q: How do you recognize a blonde’s tricycle? A: It’s the one with the kickstand.

CANT COUNT

-Teacher: “If I gave you 2 cats and another 2 cats and another 2, how many will you have?” Johnny: “Seven.” Teacher: “No, listen carefully... If I gave you 2 cats, and another 2 cats and another 2, how many will you have?” Johnny: “Seven.” Teacher: “Let me put it to you differently. If I gave you 2 apples, and another 2 apples and another 2, how many would you have?” Johnny: “Six.” Teacher: “Good. Now if I gave you 2 cats, and another 2 cats and another 2, how many would you have?” Johnny: “Seven!” Teacher: “Johnny, where in the heck do you get seven from?!” Johnny: Because I’ve already got a freaking cat!”

I’M ALIVE

A taxi passenger taps the driver on the shoulder to ask him a question. The driver screams, loses control of the car, nearly hits a bus, goes up on the footpath, and stops centimeters from a shop window. For a second, everything goes quiet in the cab, then the driver says, “Look mate, don’t ever do that again. You scared the daylights out of me!” The passenger apologizes and says, “I didn’t realize that a little tap would scare you so much.” The driver replies, “Sorry, it’s not really your fault. Today is my first day as a cab driver. I’ve been driving a funeral van for the last 25 years.”

OPEN SESAME

A doctor walks into a room full of patients at a mental institution, takes out a pen, and draws a door on the wall. He then tells all the patients that whoever wants to escape, should use that door. Immediately they all rush towards it, but of course cannot go through. However, one patient sits still in the back with a smile on his face. He has not moved at all. The doctor thinks he must be cured. He then asks the patient why he did not rush to the door, and the patient whispers, “They don’t know that I’m the one who has the key.”

Young Fine Gaels Women’s Network Call for Mandatory Consent Classes

We welcome Minister Simon Harris’s commitment to tackle sexual violence in third level institutions, but we believe that waiting until third-level to teach consent classes is far too late. We, Young Fine Gael Women’s Network are calling on the Minister for Education, Norma Foley to add mandatory consent classes to the second level curriculum. In 2019, almost 1 in 5 confirmed or suspected perpetrators in Ireland were under the age of 18 years. This is a clear indicator for the need to implement mandatory consent classes in second-level education. Consent is the foundational aspect of healthy sexual relationships, but it is a concept that unfortunately can be misunderstood. UNESCO ‘International Technical Guidance on Sexuality Education’ and the International Planned Parenthood Federation both recommend that consent should be taught from 12 years old so that young people understand the true meaning of consent and understand the implications of their actions. Waiting until third-level also leaves out many young people who pursue work or apprenticeships instead. Young people need to be equipped with the necessary life skills and education to respect themselves and others. Friday 14th August 2020

WILL INDOOR SPORTS COME BACK? So far the return of sports in Kerry has gone very smoothly which is great credit to the clubs and country boards involved. We have seen lots of action in GAA, soccer, golf, Pitch & Putt, greyhound and horse racing and rowing and everything has been perfectly organised and there has been no issues. That is of course outside of the fact that crowds are disappointingly still capped at 200 outdoors. But on the other particularly in the GAA and in soccer streaming is becoming the norm and this does allow many people who were never able to go to games – the elderly, people living and working away, people minding children or with children / adults with special needs in a house. These can now log-on and sit in the comfort of their homes and watch games featuring clubs in Kerry and hopefully on plenty occasions their own team will be involved in the game been streamed. And when this Covid pandemic is past I think that these streaming services will be kept on as I think there will be a demand for it. And maybe other sports will also look at this and it could also become a funding stream for clubs and county sporting organisations. But will indoor sports comeback: Now as we come to the end of the summer and with the schools set to open in September thoughts will turn to indoor sports. The Kerry Area Basketball Board runs the biggest of the indoor sports with numbers in the Kerry Airport KABB competitions growing every year. Basketball clubs have their return to play protocols from Basketball Ireland and all are in the process of appointing Covid officers. These and the club volunteers will have a greater workload taking the contract tracing information, putting the hygiene procedures in place etc. The other issues is if the referees will be happy to go back, will the clubs be able to retain their coaches and also if the numbers remain at 50 indoors this does not leave room for many parents to come in an watch the match so will they be happy waiting in their car or going home and coming back? The other major issue will be the availability of school halls for clubs to hire for training and games. Many of these will now be used as classrooms so will a school rent it out taking into consideration the workload of moving out all the desks, cleaning the hall before and after the game and then re-setting the hall before the morning. The KABB has been in contact will all of its clubs and is looking at pushing back the start of their season until January 2021 with entries due in November and fixtures released in December. Clubs have been generally understanding of the steps being taken by the KABB. As an aside the KABB plans to hold its AGM as soon as the country moves to the next phase of re-opening and all delegates will be in a position to attend. Back to indoor sports and clubs involved in badminton, gymnastics, boxing, squash etc will all be grappling with what needs to done to return by the end of the year. Sport is crucial for everyone mental health and hopefully all clubs can come back once everything is safe to do so be it at their usual start in September/October or if they need to be pushed back on a one off to later in the year. STAYING WITH BASKETBALL – IMPERIALS AGM: The AGM of the Tralee Imperials Basketball Club is set to take place on Wednesday August 19th at 7pm in the Rose Hotel. The club needs anyone wishing to attend to make sure they email their names to the secretary at imperialsbc@gmail.com. This is very important so the club knows in advance how many wish to attend.

KDL ALSO SET FOR THEIR AGM: The Kerry District League has announced that their AGM will take place on Monday August 24th in the Rose Hotel. Due to the present restrictions only one delegate per club can attend. All nominations must be with the KDL Secretary John O’Regan no later than Sunday August 2020. KSBGL AGM: The Underage section of soccer in Kerry held their AGM on Wednesday night with Aidan Murnane taking over as Chair following the stepping down of Padraig Harnett under Rule as he had completed his allotted 3 years in the role. Padraig will now take on the role of Secretary will all of the other officers and MC members remaining in place. KDL Corner: In the Kerry District League action this week Classic were no match for Killarney Celtic in Denny Premier A while Tralee Dynamos drew 1-1 with Castleisland and were 3-0 winners over Fenit in the same Division. Strand Road were 3-1 winners over Asdee Rovers in Denny 1A, Ballymac Celtic drew 2-2 with CSCB in Denny 1B and Classic C drew 2-2 with Killorglin C. In the Denny u17 League The Park went down 3-0 to Listoiwel Celtic but they bounced back to reach the u17 Cup semi-final with a 3-1 win away to Dingle Bay Rovers. THREE TRALEE RIDERS IN TOP 8 IN SLIABH LUACHRA CLASACAI: The Sliabh Luachra Cycling Club ran a wonderfully successful series of cycling races last Sunday with the action being the first competitive racing in Kerry since the Lacey Cup in late February. The event saw all registration and sign-on done on-line, no refreshments afterwards and just the Cups given to the different classification winners. The rest of the riders will get their prizes posted out to them – this is the new norm under Cycling Ireland rules. From a Tralee point of view the A4 race was the most successful with Tralee Manor West’s Shane Flynn taking 4th, Stephen Reidy 7th and the Chain Gang’s Matt Moloney in 8th. Killarney CC’s Shane Spellman took 2nd behind St Tiernan’s Conor Alymer who won the John Fleming Cup. The main race of the day was won very easily in the end by Blarney’s Shane O’Connell who made light work of the 110km and the heat touching 25 degrees. SWIMMERS GO ACROSS THE BAY: One of the biggest swims of the summer – the Across the Bay Swim – goes from Derrymore to Fenit, approx. 5km. 32 swimmers took to the water on a beautiful morning with the sunrise greeting them as they headed off at 7.30am. All the swimmers who had set themselves this challenge earlier in the year and put in the hours preparing were delighted to

finish well inside their target times. The Tralee Bay Swimming club and Kevin Williams as swim director were delighted with the way things went and also paid a special tribute to all those who provided the safety kayaks and boat pilots, Elaine for her help and encouragement to the swimmer with all donations going to the Fenit RNLI. KEVIN HAPPY WITH OPENING RACES RESULTS: Farranfore’s motorbike racer Kevin Coyne was delighted with his results in his first two races in the HEL Performance Supersport series – the feeder series to the British Superbike Championship. He took 19th and 20th in the two races at Donnington Park. The 18 years old Kawasaki rider will be in action again in two weeks with the next two races at Snetterton. ELLA’S GREAT RUN TO THE P&P FINAL: Tralee Pitch and Putt club look to have found a new start of the game with Ella Moynihan having a great run to the final of the National u16 Girls Matchplay final. Having won the Beginners prize and the Girls County strokeplay last week she really stepped it up again last weekend. Ella won her quarter and semi-final 3&2 and 4&3 but was up against it by the end of the first 9 holes in the final against Lucan’s Eimear Ahern. Ella was 5 down at the turn but put in an excellent back nine before losing out on the 16th. In the Boys section another Tralee player was having a very good weekend. Mark O’Regan was making his National Competitive debut and reached the semifinal of the National Matchplay Shield. Both players will be in action in the National u16 Strokeplay which has been moved back to September. Before that all the top u16’s in Kerry will be in action in the County u16 Matchplay which is set to take place on August 29th with the Tralee club hosting the event. GAA NEWS: Following the first round of the Kerry County Minor Championships St Brendan’s, South Kerry, East Kerry and Killarney Legion are the four teams qualified for the semi-finals. St Brendan’s were 1-10 to 0-07 winner over Mid Kerry. Championships: The Garvey’s Supervalu Senior football draw sees Austin Stacks welcome Dr Crokes to Tralee on Friday night August 21st at 7.30pm, St Brendan’s play West Kerry in the same venue at 3pm the following day while on Sunday at 3.45pm Kerins O’Rahillys go to the Fitzgerald to take on the Killarney Legion. In the Kerry Petroleum quarter finals Na Gaeil are away to An Ghaeltacht. In the Junior Premier Ballymac are at home to Gneeveguilla. PARNELLS NEWS: It was a historic weekend for the club when the club fielded its first ever adult camogie team in competition. Causeway were the opposition in the County League and both sets of players gave it everything with the more experienced North Kerry side taking the win in the end. The sides will meet again in two weeks. In the u12’s Camogie the Royal Blue Division A side were big winners defeating a strong Killarney side in Glenflesk. The

Amber B’s lost out to AbbeyKilLix in a scoreline that we are most used to seeing in soccer with the game ending Parnell’s 2-0 to the oppositions 4-0! In the Boys u12 the club has two teams in action with the A’s winning by the narrowest margin against Ballyheigue 4-06 to 3-08. The B’s were caught by the same opposition late on in their game. The u14’s got their County League campaign back on track with a 4-16 to 5-02 win over Lixnaw. They lost out to St Brendan’s in their final Phase 1 game. The u16’s were beaten by Abbeydorney/ Causeway in their County League game. The senior hurling side are getting ready for their County Intermediate Championship quarter final when they play St Brendan’s on August 17th. ST PAT’S NEWS: The club is reviewing how they can bring the Lotto back in the near future and hope to make and announcement soon. The underage Academy had another great weekend with Aaron Costello getting the u6 Player of the Year award, the u8’s have come on greatly from their time in the clubs Cul Camp and enjoyed their Blitz at the weekend. The u10’s train on Fridays while the u12’s enjoyed their challenge games against Na Gaeil and Moyvane. The 14’s went down to Annascaul/Lispole while the u16’s play Beale in midweek. The minors are in action this Saturday at 4pm at home to Asdee/Ballydonoghue/ Ballylongford. The Seniors got the better of Ballyduff 2-11 to 0-12 points in the Junior Premier Club championship. O’RAHILLYS NOTES: A great start by the seniors saw them race into a 1-04 to no-score lead against Temploenoe with Conor Hayes getting the goal. The South Kerry side did narrow the gap to 4 points at the break 1-08 to 0-07 but the boys were too strong and further goals from Barry John Keane and Danny O’Sullivan saw them win handily 3-13 to 1-11. They will have a few more players back from injury for their County Championship class with a good Legion side in two weeks. This Friday night the Juniors take on Dingle B in the County League Group D. And the club is delighted for its players who are on the St Brendan’s Minor panel who are through to the County Championship semi-final. The Juvenile section of the club were again out in force for their Academy sessions which take place on Sunday’s in Healy Park and new members are always welcome. And while it was a different Cul Camp this year those involved really enjoyed it thanks to the coaches hard work. The u14’s won a high scoring game against John Mitchels 4-12 to 5-08. The u12 and u14 Girls are in League action while the u16’s had a big win over Dingle. The minors put in a big effort before going down to Moyvane while the Senior Ladies were in Championship action against Beale/Ballyduff in midweek. KoR Lotto: There was no winner of the Lotto from the numbers drawn 10, 20, 24 and 30 and the next jackpot was e4,300.

T RQU ING CARS! 28 O PREMIUM ADVERTISING CAR BRANDS ARE SHIFTING GEARS !

HYUNDAI’s plan to set up its electric-car sub-brand - to be called Ioniq - shows how quickly some manufacturers are moving. The Ioniq will play a critical part in Hyundai’s push to produce three major brand new electric vehicles over the next four years. The Ioniq name, as you know, is already used on the brand’s multi-power-source family hatchback. But now it will get a specific electric focus. It will be used on upcoming electric models that will be distinguished by numbers: odd for SUVs and even for saloons and other models.First up will be the Ioniq 5 (expected next year). This is a compact crossover that is reported to be based on the ‘45’ concept shown at the Frankfurt motor show in 2019.Then in 2022 there will be an Ioniq 6 electric sports saloon. And a large SUV called the Ioniq 7 is due in 2024.Each will be underpinned by Hyundai’s new electric global modular platform which facilitates fast charging and long range. With a long wheelbase and flat floor, you can expect plenty of cabin room. Overall, Hyundai plans to roll out 16 new EVs by 2025. :: A ‘HOT’ ST version of Ford’s new Puma crossover is to be unveiled next month. It will be distinguished by a special bodykit and wheels shared with the Fiesta ST.This 1.5-litre 3cyl engine pumps 197bhp, making 0-100kmh in 6.7secs.(Motoring Indo )

NEW YARIS ...’THE SAFEST SMALL CAR YET “ !

TOYOTA’s brand new Yaris has just gone on sale and costs from €19,695 for the entry level 1-litre petrol version. The much-awaited new-generation 1.5 hybrid doesn’t arrive until October. They are claiming the Yaris has been engineered to be the world’s safest compact car. Redesigned inside and out, it is the first of the company’s small cars to benefit from the new GA-B platform which plays such a key role in improving dynamics. It also provides for a lower centre of gravity and greater body rigidity. The Toyota Safety Sense systems are standard. They include Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) such as Lane Trace Assist, Emergency Steering Assist and Intersection Turn Assistance. They have broadened the application of the Pre-Collision System so it can now detect pedestrians by day and night and cyclists in daytime driving. Intersection Turn Assistance is a first for a small car and can recognise the risk of a collision with oncoming traffic and pedestrians when making a turn at a crossroads. It is also the first Toyota to be equipped with centre airbags which help prevent driver and front-seat passenger colliding with each other in a side impact.Among the equipment items you can have are LED headlamps, an 8-inch touchscreen display, smart entry and ambient cabin lighting. The 1.5-litre petrol powering the hybrid model is claimed to be 20pc more efficient despite power being increased by 16pc (to 116hp), while acceleration is 15pc quicker to 100kmh (9.7 seconds). They say the Yaris hybrid’s pure-electric capabilities have been “transformed”, with EV-mode lasting longer in urban traffic. CO2 emissions are down to 88g/lm which translate into a WLTP combined cycle fuel economy of 3.9litres/100km - a 20pc improvement. You will be able to see the amount of time in EV mode on your display.

NEW ELECTRIC CAR TARIFFS FOR CHARGING YOUR EV !

THE number of electric vehicle (EV) drivers signing up to pay for use of public chargers has surged as new tariffs come into force.More than 13,500 EV drivers have registered with ESB’s ecars so far with a significant increase in sign-ups since it was announced that pay for use of the standard network (up to 22kW) would be introduced .There are currently nearly 12,000 fully electric vehicles and around 9,500 plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs) on our roads. It is interesting, however, that substantial numbers have made one-time payments to use the network. That seems to be the preferred method for those who mostly charge at home and only need the public network on an occasional basis. From mid August EV and PHEV owners have had to pay for using fast and standard chargers. Before that only fast chargers were subject to a power-boost bill. It has been calculated that EV owners using an ordinary charger have to pay around €3.41 to extend their battery range by 100km.ESB ecars, which runs the system, claims that despite the extension of billing to standard chargers for the first time, electric power costs represent a 40pc saving on fuelling a typical family diesel to cover a similar distance. The standard-charger upgrades - which were being carried out prior to charging being introduced - are part of a €20m investment in renewing and expanding the network. ESB ecars chief Niall Hogan has said the benefits mean “significant improvements in the reliability of the national network”. Meanwhile, super high-power charger (150kW) hubs will also be installed soon. These will permit extremely quick chargers at key national-route locations.
