EVERYTHING’S COMING UP ROSES!

Medical Matters FAMILY PLANNING (CONTRACEPTION) CHOICES FOR WOMEN Dr Kate Vernon There are many ways to avoid becoming pregnant, but how do you choose the right one for you? It’s important to pick the method that suits your lifestyle and contraception needs. If having unprotected sex, 85 out of 100 women will become pregnant within a year! All methods of contraception are quite effective (up to 99%) when used correctly and consistently. Remember, the only way to prevent pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections (STIs) 100% is to not have sex. Here are some things to consider: • Can you remember to take your contraception? Every day? At the same time? • How long do you want contraception for? Is your family complete? • Your age; there are different contraception recommendations for different ages. • Most forms of contraception do not affect your fertility (having babies in the future). However, some are immediately reversible, and others take a few months before your fertility is back to normal. • While the bar and coil (long acting methods) are initially more expensive, if you consider the annual cost they can be the cheaper options. • While most hormonal methods of contraception are safe, occasionally there can be serious side effects such clots. These problems are more common in smokers. • Are you at risk of STIs? Condoms are the only way to protect against STIs.

• You might need contraception for other reasons, such as acne or heavy periods. • Being a smoker or overweight, if you are breast feeding, have migraines or other medical problems may limit your choices, but there is always a contraception option for you. Here are the contraception options available today: • Natural family planning (Billings method or the “rhythm method”) • Condoms • Diaphragms • Progesterone only pill (“mini pill “) • Three monthly progesterone injections (“Depo”) • Implants (“Implanon”/“the bar”) • Oral contraceptive pill (“the Pill”) • Contraceptive patch • Vaginal ring (“Nuvaring”) • Intrauterine system (IUD) (“Mirena Coil”) • Copper coil (IUD) • Sterilisation surgery (tubal ligation/“tubes tied”, Vasectomy/“the snip”) • Emergency contraception (“morning after pill” or IUD). EVERYTHING’S COMING UP ROSES! Clodagh Quane, Kerry & Cork Audiology Medical Services are delighted to announce the addition of

Clodagh Quane to their team. Clodagh is a highly qualified and dedicated audiologist, whose lovely warm manner has made her a favourite with both adults and children in Cork and Kerry. She holds a Masters in Audiology and specialises in developing audiology competencies for both adults and children, especially in the area of correct hearing aid fitting. Aftercare is particularly important to Clodagh, who is skilled in helping patients manage tinntus, vertigo and balance disorders. She is particularly interested in helping people who are suffering from tinnitus find ways of managing the condition. Education is very close to Clodagh’s heart, so much so that her dissertation examined the experiences of deaf and hard of hearing students attending University College Cork. By conducting this research, she was able to gain valuable insight into how a hearing loss and different hearing interventions can impact the lives of students in an Irish third level education setting.

Look Who Dropped In For A Cuppa! IT’S not every day that your hard work gets the seal of approval from one of the country’s leading celebrities, but on Saturday morning renowned crooner Daniel O’Donnell was full of praise for the work of cancer support charity Recovery Haven Kerry, when he visited the centre while on a visit to Tralee. The visit was one of a number of calls the Donegal singer made to Tralee community groups ahead of his five night stint at the INEC – much to the delight of the centre’s clients and volunteers, who eagerly turned out to meet their favourite entertainer. After taking a tour of the facilities and gardens and hearing about the wonderful free services offered at Recovery Haven Kerry, Daniel then met with his awaiting fans, happily posing for pictures and chatting with clients, some of whom who told him of their personal cancer journey and the comfort they received at

Recovery Haven. The subject matter was of course very personal to the singer, whose wife Majella quite publically overcame her own battle with cancer a number of years ago. Genuinely impressed with the services offered by Recovery Haven and the positivity shown by those who have benefitted from the service, Daniel paid a heartfelt tribute to everyone involved. “Although we never want to have to use places like these, it’s inevitable that at times, when you least expect it, they can become the centre of your world,” he said. “It makes you realise that there are a lot of people here to shoulder you up when you’re not able to stand straight yourself. It creates such a positive situation at what could be a very negative - and probably at times - a very dark period for people.” He said that from the short time he spent walking through Recovery Haven and meeting

the people involved, he immediately felt its impact. “When you walk into places like this you feel the positivity. Even today walking into the [therapy] rooms – even though there’s nobody in it - you feel a calmness and you can feel that good things happen in this place,” he said. “These spaces are so important. Those of you who have used them, you know better than I know what they mean to you, so well done to all the people who make it happen.” After enjoying a cuppa and

some music by local musician John O’Shea and his family, Daniel gladly treated his fans to a rendition of Tipperary Town, which went down a treat with everyone, who happily sang along. Afterwards, Recovery Haven Kerry manager Siobhan MacSweeney thanked Daniel for taking time out of his hectic schedule to visit the centre and meet with clients, adding that his kind words of support meant the world to everyone involved.

EVERYTHING’S COMING UP ROSES! Celebra ting 30 year s 1988-20 18

Established 1988

WHATS DIFFERENT ABOUT BROOKFIELD?

Elisha "This year , we celebrate working with students for 30 years , since 1988 " says Principal Elisha Dowling . "I like to emphasise the word 'with' as it conveys the approach we take with all students who come here ...We have created an atmosphere in the College where students are expected and encouraged to perform to the best of their ability. The most important part of this equation (yes , Elisha also teaches Maths!) has to be our teachers .At present we have 15 teachers in the school , all highly qualified teachers who are motivated and enthusiastic about teaching ...They just love teaching ...and that does come out in the students! And because there is rarely any changeover of teachers , that gives our students consistency ..very important in the exam years . We dont have uniforms and teachers are known on a first name basis... this all fosters maturity amongst the students. All our students are given regular assessments and each is assigned a tutor who meets with them several times during the year , discussing progress and giving both advice and guidance.Career guidance also gets priority during the Senior Cycle as we find it answers a lot of questions that students may have and gives them clarification. Its very satisfying to hear, maybe even a few years after they've gone that former students have found their time with us to be hugely positive... thats enough for me "

BROOKFIELD COLLEGE ... UP THERE WITH IRELAND'S BEST!

U

S ON 066-714 In an Irish Times survey conducted on Irelands best College Feeder schools, 5896 Brookfield emerged as one of the top 2 schools in Ireland . The survey noted that 100% of all Brookfield students who sat the Leaving Cert in 2012 went onto third level education . This puts Brookfield ahead of other schools in large urban areas such as Dublin , Cork , Galway and Limerick . According to Principal Elisha Dowling " We have an extremely high standard set here and in my experience when you combine excellent teachers who are highly motivated with an atmosphere that demands the greatest effort from the students , this can have a significant positive effect on an individuals results !"

JUST SOME OF OUR REVIEWS ........................................... We were enormously impressed not only by the quality of the teaching but also by the very obvious commitment you have to fulfil each students potential. (Parents review)

Very structured way of teaching and makes sure everyone gets what they're capable of achieving.

Would not be where I am today if it were not for him. He made us all believe in ourselves

There is so much more to Brookfield than studying!

It was nice to be treated like an adult for a change

Great Teacher...Very approachable which is a big plus! Went from a D average to getting a B+

HEALTHY RECIPES for 2018

Tomatoes are at their best at the moment and are so lovely, try your farmers market or organic store like Manna organic shop for the best ones

ROASTED TOMATO CROQUES WITH PICKLED PEPPERS

Serves 6

INGREDIENTS • • • • • • • • • • • • •

5 tablespoons butter 1/2 cup finely chopped onion 2 small thyme sprigs, plus 1 tablespoon thyme leaves 1 tablespoon rosemary leaves 1/2 teaspoon dry mustard powder Sea salt Freshly ground pepper 1/4 cup all-purpose flour 2 cups milk 2 pounds heirloom medium and cherry tomatoes, sliced crosswise 1/4 inch thick Extra-virgin olive oil, for brushing Six 1/2-inch-thick slices of sourdough bread 1/2 pound Gruyère cheese, shredded

METHOD Preheat the oven to 180°. In a medium saucepan, melt the butter. Add the onion, thyme sprigs, rosemary, mustard and a generous pinch each of salt and pepper and cook over moderately high heat, stirring occasionally, until softened and just starting to brown, about 7 minutes. Add the flour and cook, stirring constantly, until light golden, about 3 minutes. Gradually whisk in the milk until incorporated and bring to a boil. Simmer the sauce over moderately low heat, stirring, until thickened and no floury taste remains, 7 to 10 minutes. Strain the béchamel through a fine sieve set over a heatproof bowl; discard the onion and herbs. On 2 large rimmed baking sheets, arrange the tomato slices in a single layer. Brush with olive oil and season with salt and pepper. Bake for about 15 minutes, until softened and just starting to brown. Set a rack on another large rimmed baking sheet. Arrange the bread in a single layer on the rack and top the slices evenly with the béchamel. Using a spatula, lay the tomatoes on the béchamel. Sprinkle with the Gruyère and thyme leaves. Bake the croques for about 20 minutes, until the tops are browned and the bottoms are crisp. Transfer to plates and garnish with Pickled Peppers. Serve hot. Make Ahead The béchamel can be refrigerated overnight. Let stand at room temperature for 30 minutes, then stir.

Bexblah Beauty HELLO BEAUTIFUL PEOPLE! I HOPE YOU’RE ALL HAVING AN AMAZING WEEK. This week, as the leaving cert results are just out, I thought I’d talk a little about my journey and how to become a makeup artist. Even though I’m not doing it full time, I’m still working as a Makeup Artist in Australia, why? Because I LOVE it. I have my kit with me and I’m so lucky that I can do what I love anywhere in the world. So I was thinking this week I would share my own journey and what I would recommend you do if you also want to be a Makeup Artist. You want to be a part of one of the MOST saturated industries in Ireland at the moment. Just letting you know. Not that there’s anything wrong with that, I just want to emphasise that so you’re aware of the industry and it’s relevant to the points that I’m about to make…

BACKSTORY

When I first initially got into makeup, I literally taught myself through YouTube tutorials, so I was what you call ‘SelfTaught’. I mostly did my own face and occasionally, I did other faces too. Let me just make a point, just because you do your own face perfectly, does not mean you will be good at doing someone else’s face. You learn by practicing, on all different face shapes, ages, skin types etc. I moved to Dublin - where there was A LOT more Makeup Artists, who not only were more experienced than me, THEY HAD QUALIFICATIONS. I was in the middle of interviewing for a job on a Makeup Counter, I got through 4 stages, to the final round. It was between me and another girl. She got the job, I was told by the owner it was because out of the two of us, she was qualified and I was not. So I decided to get my own qualification. Got a job with a huge international brand immediately after, which led me to become the 34

TRALEE ADVERTISER

Senior Makeup Artist on Counter, go to London training and do Makeup on Irish Celebrities for The IFTA’s.

QUALIFICATION

Initially I just wanted to get a qualification so it would make applying for jobs easier, but now that I have got ITEC qualified and have had experience working as a Makeup Artist I see how important it is to do a course in Makeup. The ITEC Qualification means that you’re Qualified Internationally(AKA You can work anywhere in the world!) Some of the most amazing Makeup Artists that I follow are ‘Self-Taught’, but they only do makeup on themselves. Doing makeup on clients is completely different. You are putting products on someone’s face, in my opinion, if you are charging money, you should be qualified. Why? Hygiene. In a Makeup Course, as well as learning about makeup, you learn the importance of being hygienic when it comes to makeup. Little things such as cold sores, eye infections or minor skin conditions are not always visible on the skin and can be passed on VERY easily. If one of my clients has a cold sore, it is a contraindication, which means I cannot do makeup on them. This is something that I never would have known if I did not do a course. Some makeup courses are waaaaaayyy too expensive, unless you want to do special effects or something. You don’t need to pay a fortune, more money won’t make you any more talented, practise will.

on Counter for example, gives you a direct insight to how brands work, how makeup works, and you get to do makeup on SO many different people. Makeup isn’t just doing someone’s face, it’s an experience. You should be able to interact with you client, make recommendations based on their skin type and use the products that you know will work on their face.

BASICALLY…

If you want to be a Makeup Artist, amazing! Practise on yourself, post on social media, practise on friends, wash your brushes, build a CLIENT ONLY kit, get a qualification, get experience! If you expect clients to invest in you, be willing to invest time and money in yourself and your kit.

EXPERIENCE

Makeup Artists, if they’re not working from a counter, will most likely charge depending on both the products they use, and their experience. How do you use this to your advantage? If you have more experience, you are likely to be more skilled. Working

EVERYTHING’S COMING UP ROSES!

FITNESS!

HELLO MY STRONG STRONG FRIENDS! I hope you’re all having a great week. I know every week I talk about how it’s great to be fit and healthy with regards to your physical body... And it is, in a perfect world. But this week I’m going to focus on another aspect of your health that it’s important to take care of, your mental health and being happy in yourself. Especially at this time of year, the Leaving Cert 2018 results just came out and people can feel huge pressure mentally! The next time you find yourself scrutinising something that you think is “wrong” with your body. Maybe focus on the person and soul inside your body, other than asthetics. Being a size 6 or 16 doesn’t determine who you are as a person and how healthy you are. Like everyone, I’m not happy 24/7. I have struggled with body issues, image issues and everything in between. I have finished school only to come out of two separate college courses, because I wasn’t happy in either of them. It took a lot to get to where I am now. Stay positive, a positive mindset always helps. When you are stuck in something in life that makes you that unhappy, be it a job, living situation, college course, or relationship, it is always best to take a step back and put you and your mental health first. Because if you don’t, trust me, nobody else is going to do it for you. Talk about it. It doesn’t matter to who, just let someone else know how you’re feeling. You never know they might have the perfect solution, or at least they might make you feel a bit better. Exercise, even if it’s just going for a walk. It helps clear your head and overall you’ll feel better. If you are upset about anything, don’t try hide it or play it down because of someone else’s opinions. It’s your life and if something is upsetting you, it’s ok to be upset. Once you know ways in which you can cheer yourself up again. For any of you out there feeling overwhelmed because you don’t know what to do with your life or you can’t pick

a college course or you’re confused as to what to do by a situation, remember, no one has all the answers. Not even the most intelligent successful person you know. Everyone just takes it one day at a time. So don’t feel anxious or pressured into doing anything if you feel it’s not for you. It’s your life, make a conscious decision to be the happiest, most positive person you can be. Try not to sweat the small stuff! Life is too short to have a miserable time because you’re ‘being good’ or ‘watching your calories’. It’s all about balance, you can count calories and ‘be good’ on a night in!

Tired of being Tired...? Life is definitely more hectic than it once was and whether you are a man or a woman, young or old, everyone seems to be looking for more energy. Of Course, if you are suffering from serious fatigue you should pay your GP a visit to rule out any medical issue which may be causing your symptoms. Some people may struggle with complete exhaustion where they feel every muscle in their body is aching, but for most people it may not be this severe but they still struggle to cope and function on a daily basis. Concentration, tolerance and coping levels may also be affected; and even the smallest things seem to aggravate you! A healthy balanced diet is essential. Never skip breakfast (or any meal), as your body has been fasting over night and needs a jolt to get the day started. This also kick starts your metabolism. Avoid foods high in sugar as they will give you a sudden “burst of energy” but will also result in a rapid drop in energy leaving you feeling exhausted. Some other key things to remember are: • Sleep: May sound obvious. Aim for seven to eight hours a night and ensure you are relaxed before going to bed. If possible a nap for 20-30minutes during the day may also help. • Exercise: It really does help. A brisk walk will leave you feeling more energised, not less. • Drink water throughout the day: Even slight dehydration can leave you feeling tired and life-less • Watch your stress levels: Stress and anxiety can leave you feeling physically and mentally exhausted regardless of how much sleep you get.

While these lifestyle changes are guaranteed to make a difference to your energy levels in the long term, there are also some excellent supplements which will help you! Some of these include: • Co-enzyme Q10: Your cells use it to produce energy • Tyrosine: Ideally taken during periods of low motivation and poor concentration, helps to focus the mind. (not suitable if you have high blood pressure) • Passiflora: Tincture which may help alleviate symptoms of stress and anxiety • Melissa: Combination of relaxing herbs together with magnesium to relax and L-Theanine – just 2 tables 1 hour before bed to aid a restful night’s sleep. • B Vitamin: A good quality B Complex (which contains all of your essential B Vitamins) is a must. It helps raise your tolerance levels and coping capabilities; also helps energy levels. Talk 1 every morning after breakfast. • Omega 3: Your body needs the “Good Fats” to function. If your diet is deficient then supplement with a good fish oil, such as Eskimo, MorEPA or Krill, choose from liquid or capsules If you are currently on medication some of these remedies may not be suitable, however, our consultants are happy to discuss this with you. Until Next Time, Stay Healthy

EVERYTHING’S COMING UP ROSES! COROLLA GOES HYBRID AS TOYOTA SPEEDS UP SWITCH TO PETROL-ELECTRIC WITH FOUR NEW CARS

A HYBRID Corolla will head an “invasion’”of new models from Toyota early next year as the brand here, and the buying public, gears up for a major swing to petrolelectric power. The distributors are today revealing details and arrival times for four new hybrid models early in 2019, but they only mention three by name. We already know of the three imminent models, though today we can reveal exact arrival dates and more detail. The trio comprises the Auris hatchback/estate, RAV4 SUV and large Camry saloon. The fourth model? The distributors here are declining to comment at all, but you can take it as certain that the fourth will be the brand new Corolla, which will major on having a 1.8 hybrid powertrain, though there will also be a conventional 1.6 petrol. The car, deemed the world’s best seller, has always been hugely popular with Irish buyers and is due mid-February with prices to be announced, like the others, on October 18.

NEW DUSTER DUE HERE IN SEPTEMBER

DACIA’s new Duster will be unveiled in Ireland on September 5. It has big footsteps to follow. The outgoing model hit sales of more than 10,000 after arriving here six years ago. Dacia remains tight-lipped about what sort of pricing levels the new generation will involve. And the same goes for their spec levels, except to emphasise that they are not in line with those in the UK on the basis that Irish buyers are getting some different engines. Pricing was absolutely key for a car that arrived at a time when the recession was hitting hard and there was keen demand for something that could be bought brand new for the price of a good second-hand motor. That transformed how people viewed the car and to be fair still do in many respects. Above all it has to be value for money. The new version looks a lot better inside and out - at least from where I was sitting in it at a motor show - but we’ll have to wait and see how the whole package fits. A lot has changed over the past six years, not least people’s preferences for something a lot more than basic, at a price. The brand insists there are major changes and claims significant active and passive safety elements have been added (blind spot monitoring, multi-view camera etc, especially on the higher-trim cars). (INDO MOTORING )

HOW TO GET THE MOST FROM YOUR CAR’S AIR-CONDITIONING DURING A HEATWAVE

With the UK heatwave showing no sign of ending,(and gone here in Ireland ) despite bursts of rain that will please the gardeners among us, many drivers will be taking full advantage of their car’s air-conditioning system in the days ahead. Whether or not they will be using it correctly, however, is another matter. Or at least so says Spanish car-maker Seat, which has issued tips on how to make sure an air-conditioning system is operating at its most effective, as well as warning motorists that not cooling their car sufficiently after it’s been parked in the sun can lead to a driver suffering from impaired reaction times. Those latter claims are based on Seat’s own research, which shows that an in-car temperature of 35°C (not as implausible as it first sounds when you think that a car parked in the sun for a long period can reach 60°C inside) can reduce reaction times by 20 per cent compared with a temperature 10°C lower. Now, you might well question whether anybody would actually ever try to drive in a car that was 35°C inside without at least opening the window, but Seat’s tips on how to make the best use of an air-conditioning system could still serve as a useful reminder. For example, it says that one common mistake made by drivers is to switch the air-con on to full blast the moment they get in the car. Instead, it advises motorists first open the doors and windows for a couple of minutes to allow the hot air to escape and cooler air to enter the car. Skip this step and all the air-con will do is recirculate the hot air. Another tip is to avoid pointing the air vents directly towards you, because this stops air from being evenly distributed around the car. “It isn’t a matter of temperature, but in which direction the air is flowing inside the car,” said Ángel Suárez from Seat’s Technical Centre. “The nozzles should be pointing upwards, not towards peoples’ faces. Then the air flows all around the interior of the car and reaches every passenger consistently.” If your car has climate control, rather than a more basic air-conditioning system, Seat also recommends using the Auto setting. This not only controls the fan speed but also whether the air is recirculated in the cabin or drawn from outside, helping to cool the car more quickly and minimising fogging. In addition to the advice above, it is good practice to use your car’s air-conditioning on a regular basis, even throughout the winter, to help ensure long-term reliability, while regular maintenance such as replacing filters every year or two will keep it operating at its maximum efficiency. Be aware too that over time dirt and bacteria can build up in an air-conditioning system, particularly one that is rarely used. If you find there’s a strange odour when the air-conditioning is running it is important to have the system checked and cleaned by a specialist.

JESUS PLAYING GOLF

Jesus and Moses were playing golf one day. This course had a particularly difficult hole, and Moses expressed his doubts that Jesus could make the shot over the water. “Watch this, Moses, I think I can do it,” exclaimed Jesus. “I’ve seen Arnold Palmer make this shot, and if Arnold Palmer can do it, then so can I.” Moses rolled his eyes and let Jesus try. Sure enough, the ball splashed into the water. Moses parted the water for Jesus, who went in to retrieve his ball. Jesus, however, was not ready to give up. “I know I can do this, Moses -- I’ve seen Arnold Palmer do it, and if he can do it, then so can I.” “Look, Jesus,” said Moses. “Try again if you like, but I’m not parting the water for you again.” “Fair enough, Moses,” said Jesus. Once again, Jesus’ ball was in the water. Jesus proceeded to retrieve it. Another group of golfers came up behind Moses and saw Jesus walking on the water. “Holy Cow!” one of them said to Moses. “Who does that guy think he is, Jesus ?” “No,” said Moses, rolling his eyes. “He thinks he’s Arnold Palmer”.

“Look at their calm, their reserve,” says the Briton. “Surely they must be British!” “Nonsense!” Replies the Frenchman. “They are beautiful. Surely they must be French!” The Russian finally speaks, “they have no clothes, no shelter, only an apple to eat, and are being told this is paradise. They are Russian.”

EVERYTHING’S COMING UP ROSES! 5-21 to 5-06 while the u13 Boys are getting ready for the Rose Cup this weekend. The u14’s just got the better of Currow 3-14 to 4-14 in the Castleisland District championship while the u16’s had a big win over Kigarvan/ Tousist. The club hopes all those taking part in the Cul Camp enjoys their week and thanks all the trainers for their work.

FAI NATIONAl P.R.O. OF THE YEAR CAN 28 BECOME 29? While a lot of the attention in the run up to the All Ireland final will be on Dublin’s attempt to win the four in a row what is even more impressive is the Kerry minors Drive for Five. Kerry saw off Monaghan in a tight semi-final that they probably should have won easier. But credit to the players and management who made the right calls at the right time and finished the stronger. Now Kerry are going for 5 minor titles in a row. And as impressive as that sounds what is even more impressive is that these wins have been by almost completely new teams each year. With the change in age to 17’s this year none of the player who have qualified for the final have played in an All Ireland final in Croke Park and of course none have a medal – but I would expect this to change after the next game! Galway will not be easily defeated but this is a Kerry side that has shown its heart, determination and not a little skill and they know how to win. One more for Peter Keane and his charges and we might even see some of those old 5-in-a – row teeshirts from the 90’s be up-cycled. Then to make it even sweeter the Kerry seniors and their new management team stop Dublin’s bid next year for their 5 in a row!! Now there something to carry Kerry GAA fans through the winter. On the new Kerry management set-up, as that’s what it is now, October the 8th is the date that the new names will be put to the next County Committee meeting scheduled for that night. KERRY LADIES GO DOWN TO DUBLIN: The Kerry Ladies senior team went out of the TG4 All Ireland SFC at the quarter final stage going down to Dublin 3-19 to 1-7. It was probably a wider margin than their performance deserved. The Kerry ladies set-up has gone through some turmoil this year but hopefully can put all the behind them and move on. Hopefully Eddie Sheehy will stay on as stability is important going forward. TRALEE PLAYER STEFAN WINS PLAYER OF THE MONTH AWARD: Having had a superb game in the u20 Munster final Na Gaeil’s Stefan Okumber was voted by the Gaelic Writers Association as the Eirgrid

The u15’s had a very productive day in the Crusheen Camoige Blitz in Clare while the u10’s had a good run out last Friday evening against Ballyheigue. The u16’s went down to Moyvane / Tarbert in the semi-final of the Division 8 County League. The minors lost out to Annascaul / Lispole in Round 2 of the Central Region Competition and were due to play Beale in Round 3 in mid-week. ST BRENDAN’S SENIORS: The St Brendan’s Seniors will face West Kerry in the qualifying round of the Garvey’s Senior Football Championship on Sunday August 26th. EVERYTHING’S COMING UP ROSES! rounding out the top 10 on 10 points. There are two rounds left in the competition. Kerry team represents Ireland in European Triathlon: The Irish team that took part in the European Triathlon in Glasgow was made up of 4 Kerry athletes. Majella Diskin was 7th in her age category while Paudie and Caroline Murphy and Suzanne O’Sullivan all finished in the 20’s. They course was a 750m swim, a technical 20km bike ride over three loops and an undulating 5km run to finish. RAP CONTINUES TO IMPRESS AT THE EURO’S: Tralee’s Rapolas Bulvydas is one of two Kerry players alongside Gneeveguilla’s Ronan Collins. Both have led the way on the scoring charts for the Irish team at the FIBA European Division 2 Championships. There latest win came against Portugal with Ireland winning 64-60 and the Kerry boys contributing 32 of the points. Rap hit 20 and Ronan 12 in the win that places Ireland in the 9th to 16th place classification section. They were due to play Denmark last night, Thursday the 16th, in the first games in this section. The squad defeated Romania earlier in the week with the Kerry boys again combining for 32 points in a 74-54 point win. This time it was Ronan that hit the 20 points. DERBY DATE TO OPEN SUPERLEAGUE SEASON: Thoughts of basketball fans are turning to the new season with a mouth-watering start in prospect when newly promoted Keanes Supervalu Killorglin take on Garvey’s Tralee Warriors in the Sports Complex. This game will tip-off at 7.30pm and is sure to be a sell-out. Warriors then head to Cork for the first time in the new season when they take on UCC Demons on Saturday October 6th in the Mardyke Arena at 8pm. Warriors of course have Pat Price in the hot seat and will have to plan without Trae Pemberton who will now be displaying his skills in the UK. Kerry will have 4 teams on the national basketball stage with Scotts Lakers Killarney competing in Division 1 and St Mary’s Castleisland back in the Women’s Division 1. BALLYBEGGAN CAME ALIVE WITH THE ROAR OF THE AUTOCROSS ENGINES: Killarney & District Motor Club held the Jimmy Devane Memorial Autocross event last Sunday 12th August. The action took place at Ballybeggan Racecourse Tralee, with over 50 competitors from all over the country taking part and driving a wide variety of cars and special buggies on the day. The event was proudly sponsored by Rentokil Initial Ireland and was marked as round seven of the Munster Autocross Championship. The weather held off and we had a great day’s racing. The track measured 2.2Km in length, was very technical, fast, with some tight chicanes and required some

precision driving set out by Clerk of the Course Tommy Daly. The Event was run in conjunction with Kerry Motor Club and all proceeds going to the Costello Family Fund. There was some fierce competition amongst the top local drivers Charles O’Neill & David Fleming both in Honda Civic’s from Killarney, John Hickey from Barraduff in his Suzuki built Special Buggy and Tommy Daly in his Semog Buggy from Kilcummin all fighting for overall honours and the Jimmy Devane memorial Cup. Laois man Anthony Culleton was the early leader in his Semog 600 Special. On the fourth run last year’s winner Pat O’Driscoll from Clonakility Co.Cork pulled out all the stops, setting a scintillating time and narrowly taking the win by less than a second. Tommy Daly was the top local driver and took home the Best KDMC Award. The Fastest Novice was John O’Flaherty in his newly purchased Semog buggy. The Best Saloon car was driven by Paul McCann from Dublin in his Ford Escort Cosworth, while Michelle Galwey captured the ladies award in her Ford KA. Jimmy’s Son David Devane was on hand to present the awards at the prize giving. The club also made a special presentation to the event secretary Norma Lucey for her outstanding work. A Special Thanks to all Marshals, Officials, Competitors & Everyone involved, a great enjoyable day of motorsport. KERRY PLAYERS STAR ON THE PITCH AND PUTT COURSE: It was a great weekend for Kerry’s Inter-County teams at the Munster Pitch & Putt Championships in Parteen on the Clare/Limerick border. The 5 teams in action all go the podium with two making it to the top step. The Intermediate team of Eamon Sheehy, Padraig Hobbart, Killian O’Gorman, Gearoid Cronin, James Fleming and John O’Brien took the first win, their second following the win in 2014. The County had two u16 teams in action with Cillian Courtney, Eoin O’Riordan Looney, Jack McCarthy and Robbie Harnett retaining the title for Kerry following last year’s win in Castleisland. The second Kerry side of Erin Moloney, Fintan Martin, Conor Leahy and Jake Shine took the bronze. The Kerry senior gents side took silver this year following bronze last year with the team made up of Damien Fleming, James Dignan, John McGrath and Jason O’Brien. The Junior Gents team of Nicky Barry, David Hobbert, Cathal Dennehy, John Heffernan, Noel Moynihan and Tim Scannell also took third. This weekend the u16’s head to Fermoy for the National Singles and Inter County events while in the u20’s Eamon Sheehy from Tralee will be teeing it up. KERRY 3RD GO DOWN TO HARLEQUINS: Following good wins by the Kerry Junior and Senior squads there was no joy for the 3rds as they went down to Cork Harlequins 3rds at the Oyster Oval. The Kerry

This weekend in the Munster Premier Division, County Kerry 1st are at home to Limerick on Saturday while in Division 1 the 2nd are away to Cork County 2nds. On Sunday the 1st are away to Harlequins in the Premier with the 3rds home to UCC. RALLY FANS WILL BE LOOKING NORTH AND EAST: Kerry rally fans will be keeping an eye on the Ulster Rally where the Cork / Kerry crew of Keith Cronin and Mikie Galvin are top seeds. However it is in the West that most of the attention will be. The refixed Galway Summer Stages Rally takes place on Sunday. LEAGUE OF IRELAND TAKES CENTRE STAGE AS NEW SEASON JUST AROUND THE CORNER: At a very well attended Delegate Meeting of the KDL Secretary John O’Regan told those present that the season will kick-off on the weekend of September 8th and 9th. The League also plans to run off it’s u17 competition before the end of January to allow clubs to field their strongest team before players have to sign for the 17’s League of Ireland. The Kerry Schoolboys and Girls League is also gearing up for its return with the League formation due to take place in the next two weeks. This weekend the League of Ireland sides are both in action with a big Cup game for the 15’s. They are at home to Cobh Ramblers at 3pm on Saturday in Round 2 of the Cup. The 15’s put up a very good showing against table toppers Cork City last week before going down 2-0 in the finsh. The 17’s are at home on Sunday to Waterford at 2pm. They are 3rd in the table so it won’t be easy for the Kerry boys. They have been playing well in recent games without getting the rewards they have deserved. KERRY SUPPORT HELPS LIAM MILLER TRIBUTE MATCH TO SELL OUT: Many Kerry sports fans will be making to Pairc Ui Chaoimh for the unique occasion that will be the Liam Miller Tribute game on September 25th. EVERYTHING’S COMING UP ROSES! THE MIRACLE PRAYER Dear Heart of Jesus in the past I have asked for many favours, this time I ask you this special one (mention favour). Take it dear Heart of Jesus and place it within your Heart where your Father sees it, then in his merciful eyes it will become your favour not mine. Amen. Say this prayer three times for three days and your favour will be granted. Never known to fail. Must promise publication of prayer.
