Medical Matters SEXUALLY TRANSMITTED INFECTIONS (STIs) by Nurse Catherine Doyle Sexually Transmitted Infections, once known as venereal disease, are mentioned as far back as the Old Testament. In the 1940's a syphilis epidemic swept throughout Europe. Real progress in identifying STIs did not occur until the 20th century with the advancement of antibiotics and the identification of organisms.

Symptoms to watch for in Males • Discharge from the tip of the penis (urethra) • Difficulty passing urine • Sores or swelling at top of penis or testicles

The same sexually transmitted infections exist today, except for HIV which presented in the 1980s. Infections such as syphilis, gonorrhoea, herpes, chlamydia, genital warts, trichomonas, HIV, hepatitis B and C can be easily identified by your GP through swabs and blood tests

Complications of untreated, sexually transmitted infections • Infertility (chlamydia in females) • Pelvic inflammatory disease • Cervical, oral or rectal cancers from the Human Papilloma (wart) Virus • Aids/Death in untreated HIV infection. • Unborn babies can be affected during childbirth

Who and what are is the greatest risk of contracting STIs • Young sexually active people aged under 25, although STIs are becoming more common in the 50+ age group. • Having 2 or more sexual partners in less than 6 months • Not using barrier contraception such as condoms • Sexual orientation (e.g. men having sex with men) and more risky sexual practices Symptoms to watch for in Females • Unusual or offensive vaginal discharge • Any lumps, growths, painless or painful ulcers in vaginal area • Unexplained lower abdominal pain or cramping not associated with a period

What should you do if you suspect you have a sexually transmitted infection? Early detection and prompt treatment will reduce the risk of complications from STIs. See one of our doctors or practice nurses with a fresh sample of urine as soon as possible. Be honest and frank. Everything is confidential. Staying faithful to one partner or using condoms are the best ways of preventing STIs. For more information talk to one of our GPs or practice nurses in the new “Tralee Family Planning and Sexual Health Clinic” in The Ashe Street Clinic, Tralee

LEGAL CORNER

LEGAL MATTERS CORNER MIRIAM MC GILLICUDDY ANSWERS YOUR LEGAL QUERIES

Maurice has lived in a house for over 20 years where he has to use a private road going over a neighbor Simon’s land to get to the main public road. It is a private road that he has used for years but on further investigation it has never been registered in the Property Registration Authority as a formal right of way. In this type of situation it would be important that Maurice get his right of way formalized. A right of way is a right to travel and use a road usually for pedestrian and vehicular access. The Land and Conveyancing Law Reform 2009 act has set out that new procedures will apply to these traditional rights after 1/12/2021 and it is important that everybody who has long user informal rights e.g. to rights of way, to bogs, to water use, sporting and fishing rights etc. should have these registered prior to 1/12/2021. Otherwise they may find that they will have to build up a new record of long user to their rights and there is a risk that they could lose their rights or have them affected in some way. Maurice could approach Simon and see if he will agree to sign a Grant of Right of Way for him. This could then be registered with the Property Registration Authority. If he is not willing to do this Maurice could apply to the Property Registration Authority setting out the history of the property and applying for long user registration to see if the Property Registration Authority will register the right of way based on the fact that he has been using it for more than 20 years. A map setting out the right of way would be attached to the application and this is usually mapped out by the engineer on a map suitable for Property Registration Authority standards. The Property Registration Authority will notify the person whose land is affected i.e. Simon but as long as he does not put in a viable objection the right of way should be registered for Maurice. This will make is very straightforward if he ever wants to mortgage or sell the property and also for the next of kin he leaves the property to after his death. Many people do not realize that they need to sort out any rights that were previously exercised on an informal basis before 1/12/2021 so if people have those rights and they are not registered it is important to take action on it as soon as possible as it takes sometime to have the matter dealt through the Property Registration Authority and it is now 2018. Best Decision for Eleanor My name is Eleanor Fitzgerald. I left main stream school

when I was 16 years old and at that time went into full time employment. For a long time I thought about going back to education, so in 2010 I started in VTOS in Tralee, it was a two year Leaving Cert programme. It was the best decision I ever made and in 2012 I completed the Leaving Cert. The course was invaluable and the staff were so helpful and had a genuine interest in helping each student to achieve their potential. The course prepared me for further education and after completing the Leaving Cert, I attended Kerry College of Further Education and most recently I completed a Bachelors of Science (HONS) in Mental Health Nursing in the IT Tralee. I am currently working as a staff nurse with the HSE, which I believe would not have been possible without the help and guidance I received while studying at VTOS Tralee.

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... Waterford Rose Kirsten (Mate Maher) Our 2018 Rose of Tralee!

KIRSTEN Mate [pronounced Mah-tay] Maher has been crowned the 2018 Rose of Tralee and has become the third woman representing Waterford to take the coveted title. RTÉ’s Dáithí Ó Sé announced the result in front of nearly one million television viewers and an audience of 2,000 people in the Festival Dome on Tuesday night . . Kirsten (21) was presented with her sash and tiara by 2017 Rose of Tralee Dr Jennifer Byrne and Robbie Scanlan, Managing Director of Tipperary Crystal, lead sponsors of the Rose of Tralee International Festival. She was then whisked away to her third Festival parade of the week through the streets of Tralee where thousands of people turned out for the Midnight Madness fireworks display.

Kirsten said: “I am totally shocked, I cannot put into words how surprised and overwhelmed I am right now. It was such an amazing experience and the girls that are in my class of 2018 are just amazing. I cannot get over the amount of friendships that I’ve made for life and the plans we had already made tonight. It’s just unbelievable.”

yet. I might have to click on the ‘defer’ button. I haven’t thought this far [ahead], I really haven’t and I don’t know what I’m going to do yet. I have to make a few plans.” Roses from 57 communities in Ireland and around the world took part in the 2018 Rose of Tralee International Festival which began last Friday and featured three parades, two fireworks displays, 80 hours of FREE street entertainment,

an Oktoberfest event, Fashion Show and Luminarium. The Rose of Tralee International Festival will celebrate 60 years in 2019 and the Diamond Jubilee event will take place from Friday 16th to Tuesday 20th August. The Rose and Rose Escort application process is already underway online at www. roseoftralee.ie and on the Rose of Tralee App.

Kirsten, who performed the Nina Simone classic ‘I’m Feeling Good’ as her party piece during Monday night’s TV show, loves singing and sings with the island of Ireland Peace Choir which was formed in the wake of The Omagh bombing in Co Tyrone 30 years ago last week. The eldest of four children and the daughter of Jacinta Maher from Mullinavat and Kwalo Maté from Zambia, Kirsten hopes to pursue a career in computer programming. Speaking in her first press conference after the Rose of Tralee TV show, she said: “I actually just got accepted into my course yesterday, so I haven’t clicked any buttons

Wine of the Week 2017 Maison Francaise Reserve “S” Sauvignon Blanc

This Sauvignon Blanc has a distinctive aroma. The smell of the so-called thiol character of Sauvignon is reminiscent of passion fruit, gooseberry and grapefruit. The characteristic odor is followed by a rich flavor with a pronounced finish. This is a lovely example of well made Sauvignon from Southern France. Feel the freshness!

HEALTHY RECIPES for 2018

So many things can be done with the humble tomato, and right in season now, so here is a stunning dish to try

TOMATO TART WITH CHICKPEA CRUMBLE INGREDIENTS • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •

1 (7 1/2-ounce) prepared pie crust or puff pastry, defrosted All-purpose flour (for surface) 1/2 cup cooked chickpeas, drained, rinsed, patted dry 2 tablespoons raw pistachios, coarsely chopped 1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil 1 small garlic clove, coarsely chopped 1/2 teaspoon finely grated lemon zest 1/4 teaspoon sea salt 1/8 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 1 3/4 ounces grated Parmesan (about 1/2 cup), divided 1 3/4 ounces grated Gruyère (about 1/3 cup), divided 1/4 cup thinly sliced red onion 2 cups multicolored cherry tomatoes, halved 1 large egg, beaten to blend 1/4 cup basil leaves, coarsely chopped

METHOD Preheat oven to 180c. Roll out dough on a lightly floured surface to a 10 1/2” round. Transfer to a parchment-lined baking sheet and chill until ready to use. Pulse chickpeas, pistachios, oil, garlic, lemon zest, salt, and pepper in a food processor until coarsely chopped, about 15 seconds. Sprinkle half of cheese over top of dough, leaving a 1/2” border. Sprinkle three-quarters of chickpea crumble over cheese. Top with onion, then tomatoes. Top with remaining cheese and chickpea crumble. Fold edges of dough over filling, tucking and overlapping slightly as needed. Using a pastry brush, brush edges of crust with egg wash. Bake tart until crust is golden brown and tomatoes are roasted and beginning to burst, 16–18 minutes. Top tart with basil and cut into wedges

Let me know if you enjoyed them and we will continue our healthy eating next week and remember to send your quetions to: askchefnoel@hotmail.com Recipes by

The More you tell the more you sell!!!

Established 1988

WHATS DIFFERENT ABOUT BROOKFIELD?

Elisha "This year , we celebrate working with students for 30 years , since 1988 " says Principal Elisha Dowling . "I like to emphasise the word 'with' as it conveys the approach we take with all students who come here ...We have created an atmosphere in the College where students are expected and encouraged to perform to the best of their ability. The most important part of this equation (yes , Elisha also teaches Maths!) has to be our teachers .At present we have 15 teachers in the school , all highly qualified teachers who are motivated and enthusiastic about teaching ...They just love teaching ...and that does come out in the students! And because there is rarely any changeover of teachers , that gives our students consistency ..very important in the exam years . We dont have uniforms and teachers are known on a first name basis... this all fosters maturity amongst the students. All our students are given regular assessments and each is assigned a tutor who meets with them several times during the year , discussing progress and giving both advice and guidance.Career guidance also gets priority during the Senior Cycle as we find it answers a lot of questions that students may have and gives them clarification. Its very satisfying to hear, maybe even a few years after they've gone that former students have found their time with us to be hugely positive... thats enough for me "

Elisha

BROOKFIELD COLLEGE ... UP THERE WITH IRELAND'S BEST!

U

S ON 066-714 In an Irish Times survey conducted on Irelands best College Feeder schools, 5896 Brookfield emerged as one of the top 2 schools in Ireland . The survey noted that 100% of all Brookfield students who sat the Leaving Cert in 2012 went onto third level education . This puts Brookfield ahead of other schools in large urban areas such as Dublin , Cork , Galway and Limerick . According to Principal Elisha Dowling " We have an extremely high standard set here and in my experience when you combine excellent teachers who are highly motivated with an atmosphere that demands the greatest effort from the students , this can have a significant positive effect on an individuals results !"

JUST SOME OF OUR REVIEWS ........................................... We were enormously impressed not only by the quality of the teaching but also by the very obvious commitment you have to fulfil each students potential. (Parents review)

Very structured way of teaching and makes sure everyone gets what they're capable of achieving.

Would not be where I am today if it were not for him. He made us all believe in ourselves

There is so much more to Brookfield than studying!

It was nice to be treated like an adult for a change

Great Teacher...Very approachable which is a big plus! Went from a D average to getting a B+

Bexblah Beauty HELLO BEAUTIFUL PEOPLE! I HOPE YOU’RE ALL HAVING AN AMAZING WEEK. AS WE ALL KNOW, THE ROSE OF TRALEE IS OVER AND THE TOWN WAS BUZZING! AS I SAW ON SNAPCHAT & INSTAGRAM- SINCE I’M IN SYDNEY! What I want to talk about this week though is counterfeit or ‘fake’ makeup. As it was the festival, there were lots of stalls around selling various goods, as there is at any festival. Sometimes these stalls can be selling makeup brushes or products at a quarter of the usual retail price, which you may think ‘great i’m getting a bargain’ - but you’re not. Counterfeit makeup is very dangerous - it is manufactured in non sanitary conditions and has been reported to contain high levels of bacteria. It can also contain harmful ingredients that is illegal to use in makeup sold in a store that is harmful to your health. Reactions from using fake makeup products can include acne, psoriasis, serious skin rashes and eye infections. These reactions also take a few days to appear so you may not even think it was the fake product you used.

22

TRALEE ADVERTISER

I know the temptation to buy these products, you think ‘sure what harm can a lipstick/lashes/makeup brush do’ I was surrounded by them in Thailand, I could have got the most amazing looking fake palettes, lashes and brushes for my kit as a Makeup Artist(apparently that’s what some Artists do). But putting those unknown chemicals and bacteria near my face, or a clients’ is a huge no no for me! You don’t have to spend 50 euro on a Chanel foundation if that’s out of your budget, but rather than buying a fake for a tenner, get a pharmacy dupe. Brands like L’Oreal, Revlon, Rimmel, Floramar, Note Cosmetics and more do really high quality products for low prices with ingredients that won’t harm you.

not real. Remember the points I made today, it’s not worth it, it harms your skin, it’s not sanitary, WALK AWAY! That’s what I had to tell myself over and over again in Thailand. Yes it’s annoying that they’re selling Mac lipstick for 5 euro, but it’s not real, not good for you and will harm your skin!

Rebecca

So next time you’re at a stall that sells makeup - if it’s being sold at a stall it’s

BEXBLAH

FITNESS!

HELLO MY STRONG STRONG FRIENDS! I hope you’re all having a great week. It’s coming into Australia’s summer and I overhear SO many people talking about their “detox/summer body/diet”... just no. Eating too few calories can slow down your body’s metabolism, making it more difficult to shed pounds and fat. Eating too few calories, can cause nausea, constipation, diarrhea, fatigue and gallstone formation. Now onto ‘Cutting Carbs’... *eye roll*

used immediately for energy, or they’re stored as glycogen in your muscle cells and liver. Ninety-five per cent of us will have tried cutting carbs before, and within this 95%, almost all of us will have seen weight loss in the first week or so. While this seems epic, don’t get carried away – because weight loss isn’t always fat loss. When you cut carbs from your diet, your body turns to its stored carbohydrates. At any one time, you can have as much as 500 grams of stored glycogen, and each gram of glycogen holds around three grams of water with it. This means if your body has to use up all its glycogen for energy because you’re not eating carbs, you can lose up to two kilos within a few days. But this is not fat loss.

By suddenly cutting these out, you’ll put yourself into a calorie deficit where you’re consuming fewer calories than you burn – and it’s creating a calorie deficit that causes weight loss, not the fact you’re not eating carbs. So you’re actually better off going to a PT who knows about nutrition and macros, calculating how much your body needs daily, and calculating how much calories you need daily (you’ll more than likely be pleasantly surprised). Then you can divide those calories into Protein, Carbs and Fat. Cutting out any food group will cause ‘weight loss’ because you’re creating a calorie deficit.

You’ll also typically be cranky and tired whilst torturing yourself. Your body uses carbohydrates as its main source of readily available energy. It can use protein and fat to make fuel, but this process takes far longer and is much less efficient. In other words, your muscles, organs and brain love the stuff.

Think about it – your typical breakfast might include toast, cereals or orange juice, with sandwiches, wraps or bagels at lunch, plus sugary coffees, chocolate bars and fruit throughout the day, then some kind of pasta, potato or rice with dinner. That’s a lot of carbohydrates.

BUT THIS DOES NOT MEAN YOU’LL LOSE FAT.

When you eat carbs, they’re either

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... Cllr Ferris fear the ‘downgrade‘ of University Hospital Kerry Councillor Toiréasa Ferris, Sinn Féin, said this week in an interview on RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta that patients waiting for an appointment for fluoroscopy in University Hospital Kerry in Tralee will have their appointments delayed by at least 9 months because of a problem with the equipment, and that she was strongly of the opinion that the hospital was going to be downgraded. She explained that she had been contacted by a woman who had fertility problems and had been awaiting an appointment for a year already for fluoroscopy, and that she had now been told that there would be a further 9 months

wait for an appointment because of a problem with the device. “These things happen ... devices break, or it’s no longer up to standard, but 3 years ago management at the hospital were warned that there was an issue with this equipment and that it would need to be replaced, but nothing was done about it.” “Appointments had been made for many women, and they got the call last week to say that the machine was broken and that there would be at least a further 9 month wait for an appointment.” Councillor Ferris said that this, together with other scandals at the hospital over the last

number of months, indicated to her that it was intended to downgrade the hospital. “I believe, and I have held this opinion for a while, that they are doing this on purpose, and that they want to downgrade the services that are available here in Kerry. Neither myself nor other public representatives (here) will allow that to happen easily, but at the same time if we have scandal after scandal, I’m not sure we can stop it.” “I remember speaking to a consultant in Nenagh in Tipperary in 2008 when they were downgrading that hospital, and she said to me ‘you know that the same thing will be happening in Kerry

within 10 years’ and it seems that she was right.”

Tralee Golf Club members celebrate the opening of the new Par 3 Course at Barrow Top 100 retailers , Garveys of Listowel and CH Chemist Tralee attend Masterclass Last week, AIB Merchant Services hosted a masterclass in

Dublin with UK retail expert Matthew Brown (Echochamber) and representatives from the Top 100 retailers in Ireland. Kerry retailers Jim Garvey of Garvery’s of Listowel and Peter Harty of CH Chemist Tralee have made the much sought after shortlist.

TORQUING CARS! ELECTRIC CARS MAKE GREAT SENSE ...READ ON .

Great article from Independent Motoring columnist Eddie Cunningham this week Eddie, Just a note about a question in last week’s Advice Column, where the correspondent mentioned: “I commute 80km each way each day with 10km in heavy traffic. I cover 35,000km/year.” Your Advice co-expert Gillian responded that: “Electric certainly isn’t for you with that mileage”. I have to say, I did a double-take at that one, since I commute 53km each way in a Hyundai Ioniq electric vehicle and cover similar yearly mileage. On my commute from Waterford to Kilkenny and back (similar to your correspondent’s distance, being made up of motorway and a heavy-traffic portion), I typically have more than 40pc battery (about 80km range) left. One of the things that surprised me when I researched my electric vehicle purchase, was that they’re actually much more cost-effective for people with a predictable, longish commute that’s well within the vehicle’s range than for what I’d describe as pottering-about mileage. Of course the range is limited but that’s changing quickly and range is improving rapidly, even since my purchase earlier this year. For commuters, the best endorsement that I can give is that my daily commute (in a 2.2 diesel Honda Accord) used to cost me about €8 in diesel. Now it costs €1.60 in night-rate electricity. This has been the single factor that allowed me to buy a new car for the first time in my life. If you’ve any follow-up questions, I’d be delighted to answer them. Excellent column, by the way - it’s a mustread for me each week. Mick

NEW CHANGES TO NCT ON TYRE AND BRAKE WEAR

Last year more than 1.3 million vehicles were tested in the NCT, with an overall pass rate of 48.5pc. We know that the pass rate is influenced by the fact that some vehicles are not adequately prepared in advance of a test. When a vehicle does fail, the list of items that require repair will be provided to you so that your mechanic can complete the repairs. The NCT is a basic health check of your vehicle. By law vehicle inspectors in the NCT cannot remove panels or dismantle your vehicle to check every component of your vehicle. This is why the NCT is not a substitute for a full and regular mechanical inspection. Only your mechanic can remove vehicle parts to see if your vehicle has any hidden defects. This applies to the parts of the vehicle subject to a test and other components. The introduction of new EU regulations, now in place, classifies fault results as minor, major or dangerous and will appear in this format on your NCT Vehicle Inspection Report. If you receive a report with a minor fault result, the vehicle has passed the test with minor faults recorded. You need to have these faults repaired and bring the vehicle back to the centre for reinspection and show they have been repaired before an NCT certificate is issued Major or dangerous defects mean the vehicle has failed the test. If you see a major fault result, you will be advised that the vehicle has failed the NCT. You then have 30 days to get the item(s) repaired and return to the centre for reinspection. The NCT certificate will not be issued until the re-inspection has been completed and your vehicle passes the re-test. If you don’t return within the 30-day period then a new full test will need to be conducted and you will be required to pay the full test fee. The last result classification is a dangerous fault. This is where your vehicle is deemed to be dangerously defective. In this situation your vehicle has failed because of a dangerous defect that constitutes a direct or immediate risk to road safety to such a degree that the vehicle should not be used on the road under any circumstances. Where such a dangerously defective result is recorded, this result will be made clear to you at the time of the test and will be highlighted on the report handed to you by the inspector. A sticker stating ‘failed dangerous’ will be put on your vehicle. The vehicle must return for re-inspection and pass before an NCT certificate is issued. For example, if your vehicle is put through the NCT with tyres below the legal tread depth (above), or with excessively worn brake discs, it will be classified as dangerously defective. It’s also worth bearing in mind that it is illegal for a motorist to drive a vehicle with a dangerous defect. This means you may incur penalty points and, additionally, risk a court appearance if stopped by gardai. I highlight these two fault items because they are the ones most closely linked to road safety. Both are cited as the main vehicle defects that contribute to fatal crashes, according to our report, which analysed Garda fatal forensic collision files from 2008 to 2012. Its main finding was that there is no component in your vehicle that’s as likely to contribute to a crash as your tyres. They are a contributory factor in one in 10 fatal crashes, followed by brakes (a factor in 2pc). The fact that the EU is raising the bar on these serious vehicle defects is welcome. 32

TALKING SPORT WITH THE TRALEE ADVERTISER EVERYTHING’S COMING UP ROSES!

with “The Voice” Pat Harnett

FAI NATIONAl P.R.O. OF THE YEAR RACING A HUGE LOSS TO THE TOWN: The Rose of Tralee Festival 2018 seems to have been an overall success with the music and events on the streets certainly drawing good comments. Times have certainly changed from when I was young and coming to the Festival from Killarney. We would look forward to the trip to Tralee for days as a trip from ‘one capital’ to another was a big deal. We might be in Tralee shopping a few times a year but the Festival was different. There was nothing to match it in Killarney with the razzamatazz of the street lights, bands on stages, food stands and of course the huge crowds. There would be traffic jams into the town and trying to find parking was as big an adventure as was walking down the town. The balancing act for my father who was driving was to see how close to the town he could get while passing some spaces on the outskirts of the town. Remember we are talking about the early 80’s – yes I know you cannot believe I am that old but I am!! There was no Manor West or Rose Hotel. The Dome was in the Brandon car park and the hotel was the centre of the universe for the week. The organisers of the street entertainment deserve great credit for working hard to keep the atmosphere going especially as according to their statements they do not get a full by-in from the public. Hopefully they will get the support they deserve in the run up to next year’s 60 Rose. On the television and the Dome I think the programme lacked a lot of excitement on the second night and really I think the days of the Dome as a structure erected at a big cost for a few weeks are over. Hopefully the proposed permanent structure will be built soon. Back to the sporting theme before my editor will be wondering where I am going… One thing that is certainly a big loss to the town of Tralee is the racing festival that used to be part of the Festival. That took place in Killarney this week for three days including a visit by all the Roses and one of the first

public duties of the winner. It is a shame that this is still not taking place at Ballybeggan as it would bring a lot of extra revenue to the town and extend the festival for another few days. Many towns around the country would love to have such a facility as close as this to the town. Is there any hope that it will be re-born and that racing will come back? If they could attract 10 to 12 days a year would that be a start to making a revamp viable. Add in the County Fair, the Point to Point, build in a proper auto cross and auto test track for the cars and something that the county is crying out for – a safe cycling track that can run underage races on a weekly basis. There could be a grass and tarmac track put into the venue that would not be a huge cost. Charge e2 a head for weekly competitions. I am sure there are other attractions that could be put in like a climbing wall, high and climbing ropes plus possibly incorporate parking bays for Camper vans. With the Rose due to celebrate its 60th anniversary next year maybe the discussion could begin as to the future of what should be one of the counties top sporting venues can begin. BIG WEEKEND ON THE KERRY GAA FRONT: It will be interesting to see the review of the GAA season from a club and district point of view at the end of the year. We are just over mid-way through August and a lot of the big championships are finished. Hurling’s Day in the Sun: Hopefully the weather stays as good as it has been for hurling’s big day with Lixnaw taking on Kilmoyley. The big game takes place in Austin Stack Park at 3.15pm on Sunday. According to experts this game is set to be very close with a draw not out of the question. Lixmaw defeated Kilmoyley by a point in Round 1 and then lost out to Causeway. They fought back to defeat St Brendan’s and Causeway where they turned around a 9 point loss into a 5 point win. Kilmoyley have been winning Friday 24th August 2018

narrowly all campaign by defeating Lixnaw, Crotta and Ballyduff by just 1 point. They saw off Ballyheigue rather more easily winning 3-18 to 1-11. It is the biggest day of the year for Kerry hurling fans and hopefully it will be an exciting game with Lixnaw winning – I have to say that as my father was born in that village 91 years ago and thankfully is still going strong. COUNTY FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP KICKS OFF: Can anyone get the better of Dr Crokes in the Garvey’s Senior County Championship? All the teams involved with think they will have a chance. It all begins with the Qualifier match between St Brendan’s and West Kerry (without An Ghaeltacht). Dr Crokes begin the defence of the title that they have now won for the last two years with a home game against St Kieran’s at Lewis Road. The rest of the first round games, four in title, will go ahead the following weekend. Extra Tralee team in County Senior League Division 1: The County Senior League proved to be a good one for a number, but not all, of the Tralee teams. Kerins O’Rahillys will take on Dr Crokes in the final following their 7 wins from their 11 games. However to win that game won’t be easy as the Crokes only dropped 1 point in the whole campaign. There will be an extra Tralee team in Division 1 as Austin Stacks have bounced back up topping Division 2 where Na Gaeil came third as they were just a point better off than Desmonds to take the final promotion spot. Sadly for John Mitchels they were relegated following a poor campaign that saw them only pick up 7 points. RAP RATTLES THEM IN: The dream of most young sportspersons who want to play at the elite level is to pull on the Irish shirt. And Kerry continues to provide players at many sports. However once the players make the national squads then it is up to them to make the most of their

chance. And last week in Sarajevo Kerry had two players on the Irish u16 team in the FIBA Under 16 Men’s European Championships. Tralee’s Rapolas Bulivydas certainly shot the lights out – to use as basketball expression – and was easily the sides top scorer at the tournament. Collins also played his part in the run that saw the team end with 4 wins and 4 draws. Ireland went down to Great Britain in their first game losing 59-69 but amazingly the two Kerry players hit 43 of the Irish total – Rap ending on 24 and Ronan on 19. Next up was a very close encounter with Sweden 73-70 where Ronan had 19 and Rap on 10. They then saw off Luxembourg 6832 with the Tralee players scoring 28 points and in one of their best performance they saw off group leaders Romania by 20 points with Collins top scoring on 20 and Rap hitting 12. And they made it two wins in a row beating Portugal 6460 with the Kerry boys scoring half the baskets – Rap 20 and Ronan on 12 This saw them into the 9th to 16th place classification tournament but in the first of three games in this section they lost out to Denmark going down by the minimum 1 point 63-64. Here Rap had 10 and Ronan 19 as the Kerry boys continued to impress. While they went down to Finland in their next game he Rap was at his most impressive and he top scored by far with 36 points. The Irish side got back to winning ways in their final game defeating Belarus 67-59. To finish off the tournament the CBS the Green and Mounthawk BC star hit another game high of 28 points. Rap has certainly shown that he is one of the rising stars of Irish basketball following a long line of Kerry players who have gone to the top level on the boards. This week the u16 Girls are in their European tournament with Caherciveen’s Siorfa O’Shea on the squad. Tralee Imperials are revealing their new Youth and Development Officer and launching their Academy this afternoon, Friday 24th, at the Sandy Feet Farm. We will bring you the details next week. All the clubs will be getting back into training over the next few weeks and will be registering their players. ACROSS THE BAY: The Tralee Bay Swimming Clubs Across the Bay swim takes place this Saturday from Derrymore to Fenit. Round 7 of the Swimmer of Year Series is due to take place on August 29th weather permitting. TRACK BACK: Following some work on the track action resumes on Saturday at the Kingdom Greyhound Stadium. First up on Friday night is the first round heats of the Castleisland Tyre Centre A3 Confined 525 yards

TALKING SPORT WITH THE TRALEE ADVERTISER stake. On Friday and Saturday night the track will be showing the second round heats of the Boylesports Irish Derby from Shelbourne Park. There will be an unrecorded trial on Saturday morning from 9 to 10.30am with racing that night and on Sunday while next week all sessions will return to normal. BIG NEWS ON THE PITCH & PUTT FRONT: On the weekend of September 8th/9th Deerpark Pitch & Putt Club will be delighted to host the 2018 National Ladies and Gents InterCounty Pitch & Putt Championships in what will be the first time the event will be staged in Kerry since it was held in Tralee back in 1995. Kerry will be looking to win the Anchor Cup in the Gents event for the first time since their solitary success back in 1986 in Tullamore. Kerry are also celebrating its 5th ever and first National u16 Inter County title in 6 years. They took the win by three shots over defending champions Cork at the tournament held in Fermoy. The team included my nephew Robbie Harnett so well done to him and his teammates Cillian Courtney, Jack McCarthy, Eoin O’Riordan Looney, Erin Moloney and Fintan Martin. Robbie was completing a very good weekend as on the Saturday he won the National Boys Singles for Boys 10-13 ending with 5 under par and just defeating his club-mate on count-back. The Danny Nolan Memorial Two Ball Scramble which took place in Newmarket was won by Hugh O’Sullivan and Willie John Buckley. A large number of Kerry players will be heading to the Seapoint County Louth course for the Irish National Open while Deerpark’s Cillian Courtney will become the 4th Kerry player to represent Ireland in the u16 International Challenge when they take on Catalonia in Seapoint. SILVER AND 6TH IN THE ATHLETICS LEAGUE FINALS: The men’s team took silver and a depleted women’s team sixth as the Irish Life Health Masters Championships came to an end. There were a number of Tralee athletes on both teams. In the Over 35 to Over 75 Championships Patsy O’Connor from Tralee Harriers was the stand-out athlete winning an incredible 5 national titles – javelin, discus, shot, height jump and weight for distance. The Athletics County Board will meet on Monday September 3rd in the Rose Hotel at 8pm. PARNELL’S NEWS: The club’s young stars once again proved successful as they retained the Dr Bill Managan Hurling Cup. The tournament took place at Muckross Farm and all the squad put in a great effort scoring 5-05 in their games. They had defeated Rathmore and St Pat’s East Kerry to reach the tournament.

The youngest team in the club – the under 8’s will play their last Go Games Blitz in Kilmoyley on August 30th from 6.30pm. In the Minor County Championship in Kilmoyley the boys took on Abbeydorney but were behind by half time with the North Kerry side hitting two goals to take the lead. Parnells closed the gap to 4 points but Abbeydorney’s ability to hit points from all angels saw them finish the stronger. In the u13 Boys the team defeated Abbeydorney in the North Kerry Championship with a very strong first half performance setting them up for the win. Abbeydorney fought back in the second half but strong defending saw Parnells hold on for the win. The clubs u14 Camogie players are ready for the County League which got underway this week. The Cul Camps were a great success with good numbers and all the players enjoying the week. AUSTIN STACKS NEWS: The u6’s and u8’s will welcome Milltown/Castlemaine to Connolly Park this Sunday from 10.30am while the u8’s are also due to play Kilcummin. The u10’s are due to face the same opposition while the u12’s are in the Kelliher’s Toyota Tralee Central League in Division 1 and Division 7. The u13’s enjoyed taking part in the Rose Cup where they got as far as the Shield semi-final going out to Listowel. The will now take part in the annual Denis O’Connor / Lee Strand Tournament, The u16 Tralee District team were unlucky to go down to Kenmare in the Championship. They have one more chance when they take on East Kerry. Stacks have 8 players on the team. KERRY CAMOGIE NEWS: Kerry Camogie will hold a collection prior to this Sunday’s County Senior Hurling Championship Final. This will finance the County team on the road to Croke Park on September 9th. All support would be appreciated. Kerry booked their place in the All Ireland final by getting the better of Roscommon to go one better than last year. Roscommon scored a late goal and a point to lead at half time 1-04 to 0-06. Kerry were by far the better team in the second half and soon took the lead adding on 4 points to the Rossies 1. When Alannah Whelan found the net for Kerry the Kingdom girls were on the way to Croke Park. WATERFORD MIGHT HAVE WON THE ROSE BUT THE ROSE CUP GOES TO CORK: The 2018 Rose Cup was once again a very enjoyable and hotly contested tournament run in association with the Festival. The Aghabullogue under 13team won the Rose Cup after the days

play as they just saw off Ballymac. They were the home team of the Cork Rose. Listowel Emmets won the Rose Shield as they defeated Eire Og from Clare. Last year’s Rose of Tralee Jennifer Byrne was on hand to present the prizes while John Slattery the Chair of the Tralee Town Board thanked all the teams who took part and especially those who travelled from outside the county to take part. BALLYMAC NEWS: Ballymac took on Currow in the final round of the County League and it was the visitors who lead at the break by two points 0-07 to 0-09. Ballymac got things going in the second half and got a big boost when Thomas O’Connor hit the net for the home side. In the end that goal proved vital as there was only a point between the sides at the end with Ballymac winning 1-13 to 0-15. This was a great end to the season as the team has retained their Division 2 place for 2019. Lotto: There was no winner of the Lotto from the numbers drawn 1,4,5 and 11 and the next Jackpot will be e6,100. The u6’s continue their weekend training sessions. In the u12’s Desmonds won their game in Division 2 while the Gold team drew with Annascual / Lispole 3-15 to 5-09. In the last competition for the u13’s they did very well to reach the final of the of the Rose Cup while the u16’s played Fossa in the Division 4 County League Final in the Fitzgerald Stadium winning 6-12 to 4-14. This was a great performance by the team and a just reward for all the work they put in during the season. The u14’s took on Kerins O’Rahillys in their Central Region semi-final but it was the Tralee town side that progressed to the final. The u16 Ladies had better luck in their County League Division 2 semifinal as they beat the Legion 2-06 to 4-10. ST PAT’S NEWS: There was no winner of the Lotto from the numbers drawn 6,15,18 and 22 and the next Jackpot will be e2,100. The u6’s, u8’s and u10’s are enjoying their training sessions every weekend and the progression of the players is a joy to watch. It is also obvious that the young players are playing lots of ball outside of these sessions. The u14 Girls put up a great effort before just going down to Corca Dhuibhe in Lispole and they will face Kerins O’Rahillys next. The minors got back to winning ways in Round 3 of the Central Region Competition beating Keel in Blennervillle. In the last game of the County League Division 3 the points were shared in the clash with Waterville. It finished Waterville 2-15 to St Friday 24th August 2018

Pats 1-18. St Pat’s were safe before this game but management were delighted with the way the team acquitted themselves in their last game. The Senior B team commence their Junior Cup this weekend with the team playing Glenflesk on Friday evening in Blennerville at 6.45pm in the Barrett Cup. In the Minor Football Championship the team saw off Laune Rangers and await the draw for the semi-finals. Best of Luck to St Brendan’s Seniors who will play West Kerry in the qualifying round of the Senior Football Championship on Sunday August 26th in Austin Stack Park at 6.30pm with extra time to be played if required. KERINS O’RAHILLYS: The seniors can be very happy with their County League campaign as they have finished second and qualified for their first senior League final since 2013. They will take on Dr Corkes in the final. There next outing will be the first round of the County Championship in two weeks when they play Feale Rangers in Listowel on September 1st at 5.30pm. They will be hoping to go at least one step further than last year’s semi-final. The Juniors had a big win over John Mitchels in the Tralee Town League and are now in pole position for a semi-final place. Charlie Kerins will be in action this Friday night in the Cahill Cup. The u16’s went down to Knock/ Brosna/Duagh in the Division 3 final. After a short summer break the Academy got back to full action and continues each weekend. The u12’s and u14’s are in mid-week action this week while the 13’s enjoyed the Rose Cup even if they just missed out on a semi-final place. There were a number of players from the club with the North Kerry Development side who lost out in their final against Cork in Tullamore at the weekend. ON THE GREEN’S: In the DCS Festival Open Edward Daniel and Derek Kelly were the winners from Gerald Carey Junior and Mike Sheehy Junior. The Par 3 course was officially opened on August 17th and the winners of the first competition was the team of Michael McKiernan, Kieran O’Callaghan, Ed Buckley and Patricia McKieran. The Best Family went to Catherine McCarthy, Eddie McCarthy, Sinead O’Donnell and Mark Gazi while the Nearest the Pin on the ‘Postage Stamp Hole’ was Seamus Enright.

IT’S ONLY A JOKE A MAN IS DINING IN A FANCY RESTAURANT

A man is dining in a fancy restaurant and there’s a gorgeous redhead sitting at the next table. He’s been checking her out since he sat down, but lacks the nerve to talk with her. Suddenly she sneezes, and her glass eye comes flying out of its socket toward the man. He reflexively reaches out, grabs it out of the air, and hands it back. “Oh my, I am so sorry,” the woman says as she pops her eye back in place. “Let me buy your dinner to make it up to you,” she says. They enjoy a wonderful dinner together, and afterwards they go to the theatre followed by drinks. They talk, they laugh, she shares her deepest dreams and he shares his. She listens. After paying for everything, she asks him if he would like to come to her place for a nightcap and stay for breakfast. They had a wonderful time. The next morning, she cooks a gourmet meal with all the trimmings. The guy is amazed. Everything had been SO incredible! “You know,” he said, “you are the perfect woman, are you this nice to every guy you meet?” “No,” she replies. . . “You just happened to catch my eye.”

A MAN ASKS ANOTHER “DO YOU HAVE A CAR?”.

“Sorta”, he replies. “What do you mean?”, asks the man. “Well, it’s my wife’s car when she goes grocery shopping, it’s my son’s car when he goes to his girlfriend’s, it’s my daughter’s car when she goes out at night and it’s mine when it’s out of petrol !”.
