Becky's Starting Scan. (We used a digital scan, this means we no longer need gunky impressions) With us at Bridge Place Dental, Becky was able to see a projection of her finished smile at the start of treatment. We then needed to repair the worn front tooth with dental bonding (long lasting, cost effective and not destructive to tooth structure)

Medical Matters THE MENOPAUSE (“THE CHANGE OF LIFE”) by Dr Karen Soffe Menopause is unavoidable for all women. It is the time in a women’s life when her periods stop and her ovaries lose their function. Usually this occurs between 45 and 51 years old. In some causes however, it can occur prematurely or suddenly because of surgery or cancer treatment. Nowadays women are often still working fulltime and can be expected to live over 30 years after their menopause. A woman’s ovaries do not stop producing oestrogen overnight; the process can take many years during which symptoms begin. This is the “peri-menopause”. The fluctuating and diminishing oestrogen cause many symptoms. Hot flushes are the most well-known symptom occurring in 3 out of 4 menopausal women. They range from slightly annoying to completely overwhelming and unbearable. Other symptoms include irregular period (longer or shorter cycle or more heavy bleeding), palpitations, anxiety, difficulty sleeping, low mood, trouble concentrating, crying episodes, muscle and joint pains, dryness of the vagina, frequent kidney infections or a loss of interest in or painful sex. There are also long-term effects on the body from the lack of oestrogen such as thinning bones (osteoporosis) and an increased risk of heart disease. Diagnosis is usually based on symptoms although bloods tests may sometimes help make the diagnosis.
Managing your menopause is key to your future health. Lifestyle improvements such as a healthy diet, exercising to maintain bone density, stopping smoking, reducing alcohol, attending breast check and cervical check and techniques to safe guard your mental health are all important. Contraception may be required in the months and years leading up to the menopause. Some women may require HRT (hormonal replacement therapy) which is the most effective way of treating all your menopausal symptoms and reversing the negative health effects of menopause. There are many new safer forms of HRT available nowadays. If you are worried about the menopause or want to assess your risk of heart disease, osteoporosis and explore options to improve your future health, book an appointment with one of the doctors or nurses in the new “Tralee Family Planning and Sexual Health Clinic” in The Ashe Street Clinic, Tralee or talk to your GP.

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... Kerry ETB... the Doorway to Dynamic Careers and Higher Education Sharon Browne, Adult Education Officer with Kerry ETB gives a little advice to students who recently received their Leaving Cert results ..... “For many the last week has been a time of angst. What next? Should I go to college, not to mention did I get the points to secure a place or can my family afford the three to four year investment? Well here is some good news… there are many more options available to you and they are on your doorstep. Even for students who got top points in the Leaving Certificate, Further Education is a fantastic way to experience a new vocational area while you become a self directed independent learner, but in a well supported environment. For some, a first year lecture theatre with 300 people who don’t know your name is not a place they want to be. PLC Colleges of Further Education have come a long way since the days of general secretarial studies for the girls and trades for the boys. Options now include: Physiotherapy Assistant; Computer Game Design and Development; Software Development; Engineering Technology; Fashion Design; Youthwork; Music Technology; Animal Care and Grooming to name just a few. Today Kerry College of
Further Education (KCFE) in Tralee, and North Kerry College of Further Education (NKC) in Listowel, run by Kerry ETB, offer alternative routes through CAO to Higher Education and pathways to dynamic new careers. Some courses with a Level 6 option even have advanced entry routes to year two of certain higher education courses. PLC courses are open to school leavers and mature students. Financial supports such as the SUSI grant or the Back to Education Allowance are available to eligible learners. The focus is on giving the learner the opportunity to get a great academic foundation in their chosen field, along with hands on learning through practical application, projects, group work and work experience. Assessment is mainly by continuous assessment. “We like to prepare our learners really well for their work experience. I think that is why many of them end up in full time employment afterwards. For example on our Engineering Technology course, the class is exposed to a range of engineering processes such as welding, brazing etc, as well as Computer Aided Design (CAD) and Computer Numerically Controlled (CNC) Machining so they already have skills to bring with them and apply during work experience”, said
Stephen Goulding, Principal of North Kerry College of Further Education. Karen Whelan, who did Pre Nursing Studies in Listowel said “I was absolutely delighted with the course. I learned so much and gained a huge amount of skills from my work experience in a nursing home. I am now totally sure that nursing is the career for me because of this course. The high standard of teaching and support I received allowed me to obtain very high exam results. Thanks to this prenursing course I have secured a place in the University of Southampton in the UK where I will obtain my Bachelor of Nursing degree. I can’t wait to begin my career in Nursing.” This time last year 19-year-old Paul Sheerin was disappointed he didn’t get a place on the Level 8 (honours degree) Bachelor of Music at Cork IT. So the Trumpet player from Rathmore did the KCFE Music Thecnology course instead. Now he says “doing the PLC was the best decision I ever made”. And he is starting the CIT course he wanted next month. Some PLC applicants who may not meet the entry criteria, or have not been involved in learning for a long time, may opt to do a VTOS course first. This is a well structured and supported two year course
with academic, personal, financial and childcare supports built in. You have to be over 21 years and in receipt of a social welfare payment for six months. VTOS is available in four Kerry towns, including the option to do a Leaving Certificate in Tralee. One past Killarney VTOS learner said, “I started VTOS in 2014 and was very nervous returning to education having completed my Leaving Cert in 1988. I couldn’t recommend VTOS highly enough – from the open day right through to the last day of the 2 years. It was a purely positive experience from start to finish. To find out about Kerry ETB course options go to www.kerryetb.ie or www. fetchcourses.ie. Kerry ETB also offer a free adult guidance information service to the pubic. They can be contacted on (066) 7121300. For further information contact Sharon Browne Adult Education Officer Kerry ETB (066) 71 93900 or (086) 7969628
Coffee And Treats To Assist The Work Of Kerry Hospice Fancy a cup of coffee and a sweet treat!. That will be slogan across Kerry in September as thousands of cups of tea and coffee will be consumed in aid of the Kerry Hospice Foundation. Friends, neighbours and entire communities are busy preparing for Irelands biggest coffee day on September 20th. Last year more than 40 coffee mornings were hosted in Kerry raising more than €40,000 during the Bewleys sponsored event. One of the Kerry Hospice volunteers, Kathleen O Connor 6

of Annascaul /Inch, will once host a coffee day at her home. “This is much more than a charity event. It’s a social event where friends and neighbours come together to chat, have some home baking and refreshments to help those on their cancer journey,” said Kathleen. “It’s a time we think of loved ones and celebrate the wonderful time we had with them. Right across Kerry friends come together for the day baking and raising much needed funds for Kerry Hospice. Why not be part of Friday 31st August 2018
this great day.” All the monies raised in Kerry on September 20th will stay in Kerry. “The money raised from the day will help in the funding of the €500,000 that is needed for the many Palliative Care services that are provided in Kerry. This includes the running costs of the Day Unit, Inpatient Unit and the home care services .
If you would like to host a coffee morning please get in touch with Andrea on 0876413449,” said Kerry Hospice P.R.O. Andrea O’Donoghue.

Did you make New Year’s Resolutions last January? How are they going? Many people talk about what they want and never take the steps to get there. Changes cannot unfortunately be made just because it is a New Year! There are many different reasons for not making that change last - limiting beliefs, not believing it’s possible, lack of emotional, mental and spiritual skills, not being able to set priorities and manage activities, and procrastination. Heal Your Life ® Teaching (based on the philosophy of writer Louise Hay) can help you overcome these blocks. Heal Your Life Teachers promote the development of inner skills like meditation, visualization, and affirmations, more than other personal development programs. Join me on a one day or weekend Heal Your Life Workshop if you want to: • learn how to achieve goals faster • learn the mental, emotional, and spiritual life skills for balance and success • learn and use techniques to clear the past and present challenges • learn the value of achieving your full potential • develop a deeper intuitive/spiritual connection • Heal Your Life ‘Wellness Weekend’ Workshop in Tralee on Sat & Sun Sept 29th & 30th (10-6pm) ... led by Alison Boardman, licensed Heal Your Life® Teacher and Coach
KNOW YOUR RIGHTS: RENTING OUT A ROOM IN YOUR HOME Question I have an extra room in my home and I would like to rent it out. Will I have to pay tax on this rental income? Answer If you rent out a room in your home, the rental income you earn is exempt from income tax, PRSI and the Universal Social Charge – provided it is less than €14,000 in a tax year (1 January to 31 December). This is called rent-a-room relief. Rental income includes the total rent and any money that the tenant pays directly to you for food, utilities, laundry or similar services. The income you get must be under the exemption limit of €14,000. If it is over this limit, you are taxed on the total amount. Your home must be in the State and you must occupy it as your sole residence during the year of assessment. This means that it is your home for most of the year and is where people would normally expect to make contact with you. Some self-contained units qualify for this relief but they must be attached to your home, for example, a basement flat in your home. You do not have to own the property to get renta-room relief – you can be a tenant sub-letting to someone else. In this case, you should check with your landlord that sub-letting is allowed. The rent-a-room relief applies only to residential tenancies, not to short-term guest arrangements, and tenants must use the room on a long-term basis. So, renting a room to a student for the academic year or for a one-month course is covered, but providing accommodation to occasional visitors for short periods, for example, through an online accommodation booking site, is not. You cannot claim the relief if you are renting a room to your civil partner, son or daughter, or if you are an employee and your company pays you to allow clients to use the room on an occasional basis.

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... New York Times commends Croí Restaurant and Siamsa on Tralee visit! Top NY Times columnist Lucas Peterson samples the West Coast and gives hats off to Croi and Siamsa Tire last week while this week Croi Restaurant gets a top commendation and makes the final awards from Yes Chef Ireland ... a busy week indeed !!.....read on FRUGAL TRAVELER Spoiled by Beauty and Deals on the Irish Coast Our columnist sets out on a road trip to take advantage of what the Irish countryside had to offer — and finds that it more than delivers on its promises. “My Irish mini-road trip ended in Tralee, the largest town in County Kerry and one that’s making an excellent case for itself as a tourist destination. Walking from my lodgings at the Rose Hotel (84 euros per night) into the center of town, I crossed through the Park of Tralee and its beautiful rose garden before taking in a quick meal at a local restaurant, Croí. I got to talking with its manager Kevin O’Connor about Tralee. “Galway has really arrived over the last few years, and now it’s our time,” he said. “People are starting to believe in our town, and the townspeople are starting to believe. And that’s how it starts.” My two-course earlybird dinner (20 euros) certainly won me over. Glenbeigh
mussels with wild foraged garlic and chorizo were nicely cooked, and a portion of local Irish chicken with mushrooms and pancetta was perfectly juicy and flavorful. Finally, it was show time. I surely wasn’t going to wrap up my Ireland trip without taking in some Irish dancing, and what better place to do that than at Siamsa Tíre, the national folk theater of Ireland? The tickets weren’t exactly cheap (27.50 euros) but I thoroughly enjoyed the spirited, rollicking performance of Oileán, which tells a loose story of traditional life on the nearby Blasket Islands. There were plaintive ballads sung in the traditional seannós style; there were flutes and fiddles; and, naturally, there was plenty of percussive stomping and intricate footwork. It capped off a thrilling trip through the Irish countryside that seemed almost like a folktale — nearly storybook-like in its grandeur and beauty. But it’s no myth: It’s very real, and utterly accessible.” Lucas Peterson is the Frugal Traveler columnist. He has written for GQ, Lucky Peach, Eater, LA Weekly and Food Republic. His video series for Eater, “Dining on a Dime,” is now in its 11th season. @ FrugalTraveler

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... Kerry County Council short-listed for 3 Awards The Excellence in Local Government Awards are held annually in conjunction with Chambers Ireland and the Department of Housing, Planning and Local Government. Twenty-one local authorities have been short-listed over sixteen categories, ranging from ‘Supporting Tourism’ to ‘Best Practice in Citizen Engagement.’ Congratulating the local authorities short-listed, the Minister for Housing, Planning and Local Government Eoghan Murphy TD said: “The Chambers Ireland Excellence in Local Government Awards, which my Department is very proud to support, gives local authorities the opportunity to showcase the invaluable, impactful and often very innovative work they do in making our communities better places in which to live,
work and play. I would like to congratulate Chambers Ireland for their important work in managing these awards every year.” Senator Victor Boyhan a member of the Oireachtas Committee on Local Government said he was particularly delighted to learn that Kerry County Council had been short-listed under three categories for the awards and wished them well in the final. WELLNESS – A DIGITAL DETOX “It has become obvious that our technology has exceeded our humanity” – Albert Einstein For a long time, the heart was considered the seat of emotion, but advances in neuroscience have shown that the brain is where happiness rests. In particular the left prefrontal cortex is more active when we experience happiness. Research conducted reveals that the following activities all stimulate the left prefrontal cortex: • • • •
Mindfulness meditation Engaging in pleasurable activities Spending time with loved ones Celebrating accomplishments
The Tech Effect Are your beloved devices affecting your happiness? It could be time for a digital detox…. How many times a day do you look at your phone? Have you ever gone 24 hours without checking your social media accounts? What about when you go home; do you turn on your laptop or use your tablet? According to MediaCom’s ‘Connected Ireland’ report released last year, three out of five people admitted that they hadn’t stayed offline for more than a single day. Three quarters of those surveyed said that they use social media at least once a day with almost half using it multiple times a day. Fifteen per cent of people revealed that they’d never stayed offline. While most research concedes that social media and technology isn’t necessarily a direct cause of unhappiness or depression,
but rather that it can exacerbate existing issues or emotions, it is still an alarming trend. It is also the reason that the term ‘digital detox’ is gaining recognition. A digital detox is a period of time during which an individual refrains from using all electronic devices such as smartphones, tablets and computers, instead focusing on the physical world. Mobile phones and other devices allow people to remain switched on, be it checking their work emails or updating their social media status, even during their time off. The problem is that this can increase stress levels and anxiety at a time when you should be winding down. Similarly checking your phone constantly when socialising with friends can prevent proper communication and connection, both of which are vital to well-being. Another area that can be disrupted by technology is sleep, the lack of which can have a major impact on your mind frame
and contentment. “Everyone should aim for eight hours sleep each night. Get your head out of your phone and into a book to wind down before sleep.” Considering that approximately 14 per cent of the Irish population is judged to have good mental health – with the same percentage challenged with mental illness – perhaps it’s time we embraced the digital detox or at least put it to the test. Top tips for a daily digital detox: • • • • • • • •
Ditch your phone on the commute home Get some fresh air at lunch (without your device) Don’t check work emails when you arrive home When with friends and family, leave your phone in your bag Avoid all devices for at least half an hour before bed If charging devices, put them in a different room Swap your tablet for a book to wind down Only check your social media accounts once a day

WHATS DIFFERENT ABOUT BROOKFIELD?
Elisha "This year , we celebrate working with students for 30 years , since 1988 " says Principal Elisha Dowling . "I like to emphasise the word 'with' as it conveys the approach we take with all students who come here ...We have created an atmosphere in the College where students are expected and encouraged to perform to the best of their ability. The most important part of this equation (yes , Elisha also teaches Maths!) has to be our teachers .At present we have 15 teachers in the school , all highly qualified teachers who are motivated and enthusiastic about teaching ...They just love teaching ...and that does come out in the students! And because there is rarely any changeover of teachers , that gives our students consistency ..very important in the exam years . We dont have uniforms and teachers are known on a first name basis... this all fosters maturity amongst the students. All our students are given regular assessments and each is assigned a tutor who meets with them several times during the year , discussing progress and giving both advice and guidance.Career guidance also gets priority during the Senior Cycle as we find it answers a lot of questions that students may have and gives them clarification. Its very satisfying to hear, maybe even a few years after they've gone that former students have found their time with us to be hugely positive... thats enough for me "

Bexblah Beauty HELLO BEAUTIFUL PEOPLE! I HOPE YOU’RE ALL HAVING AN AMAZING WEEK. THIS WEEK I’M TALKING ABOUT COCONUT OIL & HOW I USE IT. I LOVE COCONUT OIL, IT HAS SO MANY USES AND BENEFITS. HAIR MASK: Coconut oil will give your hair a silky texture and lots of shine. I use coconut oil as a hair mask at night after I’ve washed my hair. Simply heat up about 5 tablespoons of coconut oil in the microwave, so that it’s a warm liquid. Then, apply it to your hair like any other hair mask. Put on a plastic shower cap or wrap an old T-shirt around your head, and leave the oil in while you sleep. The next morning, wash it off in the shower and wow, hello perfect hair!

EYE MAKEUP REMOVER: I use coconut oil to remove my eye makeup. It takes every little bit of eye makeup off and also promotes eyelash growth. Win win situation! FACE/BODY MOISTURISER: If you rub a little bit of coconut oil between your hands, you will immediately notice how incredibly moisturizing it feels on your skin. As a face and body moisturizer, coconut oil is much more hydrating than average store-bought lotions because the oil penetrates deep layers of the

skin and actually helps to strengthen underlying tissues. It will also help remove dead skin cells, removing any rough or flaky texture from your skin’s surface and giving you a full body glow. You can use coconut oil as a moisturizer for your entire face, but I like to put it under my eyes and on my lips before bedtime. The best part about this oil is that it will absorb into your skin without feeling oily or greasy.

FITNESS!
HELLO MY STRONG STRONG FRIENDS! I hope you’re all having a great week. This week I’m going to talk about having a healthy relationship with food. A healthy relationship with food is actually something that few people have. Growing up I was never happy with my body really, I was always on some form of ‘diet’, I would fluctuate loads! I thought of certain foods as ‘good’ and ‘bad’. I had a bad relationship with food. Now, I’m pretty certain in saying I have a good relationship with food - no foods are ‘banned’ from my meals, I know what foods to eat in order to fuel my body properly and I don’t see any food as ‘good’ or ‘bad’. Because I love going to the gym and working out, I know what kinds of foods will fuel my body so that I can have the most energy possible and benefit from my workouts. If I really feel like a certain food - I have it. Simple as. But I didn’t just wake up one day and have this mindset and attitude, a few years ago I was eating whatever I felt like too - but my
meals consisted mostly of dominos, chinese, chocolate, high calorie, low nutrition, high sugar, high salt foods. It’s a process. I first had to learn all about food and nutrition and what nutrients and macros your body needs. There was a period when I first started to get myself together that if I felt like a certain food I didn’t eat it, because I had to get my nutrition right first. So I get it, you can’t just ‘eat what you want’ - because some days we all just want to comfort eat, and that’s not beneficial either. I guess that having a good relationship with food is eating what you know your body needs, but not depriving yourself either. • BREAD IS NOT BAD • CARBS ARE NOT BAD • FAT IS NOT BAD • CHOCOLATE IS NOT BAD All of the above foods won’t ‘make you fat’ unless you eat them in excess amounts, but that applies to every food. If you’re doing a certain diet at the moment for a ‘quick fix’ or ‘fast results’ - sorry, but you do not have a good relationship with food. These diets may provide quick weight loss, but what you might not realise is, that weight is mostly made up of muscle and water weight - not actually fat. Those diets also totally mess up your metabolism and therefore when you go back to ‘eating normal’ you will put on weight quicker than before. It’s a vicious cycle. If you feel like you’re a bit lost when it comes to nutrition and food, or that you have a bad relationship with food, don’t fret. Get yourself in contact with a reputable nutritionist, or a personal trainer who is qualified to give nutritional advice (some are not).

TORQUING CARS! FORD’S RAPTOR REARING TO GO ... HERE IN EARLY 2019!
This is Ford’s toughest Ranger pick-up to date. The Raptor has just been confirmed for sale in Europe - and is due in Ireland by March. Developed by the company’s Performance Division, the Raptor is made for those who like lots of power as well as practicality in their pick-up, not to mention the ability to be a sharp off-road driver and tackle tough terrain. The distributors here confirmed to Motors that it is on its way, but they have no indication of price or spec as yet. As a sort of guide, the basic Ranger costs from €30,300 but I’d expect the March arrival to have a much higher price. More people seem to want a pick-up nowadays, for the mix of work and everyday motoring. Ford claims the Ranger is now the leader in its segment. So what do you get with your Raptor? An ultra-strong, specially designed chassis, specific suspension and tyres, a 10spd auto gearbox, 213PS and 500Nm from its EcoBlue diesel engine and the brand’s Terrain Management System. Ford says the motor’s “extreme” styling is designed to reflect its ability on and off the road. The fact that the EU is raising the bar on these serious vehicle defects is welcome.
EAGERLY AWAITED COROLLA HYBRID SET TO HIT IRISH SHORES IN EARLY 2019
Toyota his week confirmed the arrival of the world’s first Corolla Hybrid which will hit Irish shores in February 2019, as the fourth model in the eagerly anticipated 2019 Toyota self-charging hybrid invasion. Renowned as the world’s best-selling car, with more than 45 million vehicles sold worldwide since its introduction in 1966, the first-ever Corolla hybrid will be charged with a 1.8 hybrid powertrain and will carry a more modern and stylised aesthetic and will reflect the ‘fun-to-drive’ philosophy that’s integral to the TNGA system and the new game-changing hybrid generation. Coming in as part of the new generation of self-charging hybrids arriving in early 2019, the Corolla is a unique offering in its segment; the combination of sleek styling, efficient and engaging hybrid driving dynamics makes for an outstanding package. A firm favourite with Irish drivers, and globally one of the most recognised model names, it’s expected that demand will be high. It will also be available with a 1.6 petrol engine, but Toyota Ireland predicts that 90% of Saloon sales in 2019 will be hybrid. Corolla Hatchback It’s also been announced that the Auris is set to join the popular Corolla family, under the new name – Corolla Hatchback – and will sit alongside the extended Corolla range that now includes the Saloon and Touring Sport. This is a clear strategy to use the power of big global brand names, like the Camry which is the best-selling car in the US in 2018, and now the Corolla which is the world’s best-selling global car, to complement Toyota’s New Global Architecture The first public appearance of the extended Corolla range will be the Corolla Touring Sports model at the Paris Motor Show in October. Prices and grade level information for all models of the 191 Corolla will be available from Toyota dealers nationwide on 18th October 2018, where deposits will be taken to guarantee delivery.

POISE’N’NARROW
I am reluctantly considering selling my 15-year old Audi TT. I want something that is a bit sporty and refined, with petrol engine and automatic transmission. It also has to carry my golf clubs. The Jaguar XE fits the bill but I can’t get out of it when I drive it into our garage. And I’m slim. Can you suggest something narrower? MA HJ Says A BMW 1-series or 2-series (not the M2) would do the job and has a wide choice of engines and drivetrains.

TALKING SPORT WITH THE TRALEE ADVERTISER EVERYTHING’S COMING UP ROSES!
with “The Voice” Pat Harnett
FAI NATIONAl P.R.O. OF THE YEAR BASKETBALL IN TRALEE IS IN SAFE HANDS: One of the fundamentals of basketball is keeping the ball safe. Well one thing for sure is that basketball in Tralee is in safe hands. DARRAGH’S NEW ROLE: Starting at the underage where the stars of the future come from Tralee Imperials have announced that Darragh O’Hanlon is taking on the position of Academy Director. Darragh will have responsibility for all ages from the u16’s down to the younger players in the Academies. He is the ideal candidate for this position as he is playing the game at the highest level with Garvey’s Tralee Warriors and has completed a Bachelor of Business and Sport and Exercise in CIT. I caught up with Darragh at the launch of the Academy sponsorship by Sandy Feet Farm, the lovely farm, activity area and café in Camp that is well worth a visit. He was looking forward to his new role. “There is great work being done in the club and we have a huge number of players playing the game. It is wonderful to walk into Mounthawk Gym and see all these squads enjoying their basketball training. “My role will be to ensure that structure is right for the players and for the coaches. And as in most sports the day of just picking a parent and giving them a ball and a few bibs and let them off with a team is long gone. “As we all know all coaches and volunteers must rightly now be vetted etc. We must then provide the support the coaches by providing them with the proper training and support. This is vital so that our players then get the proper age appropriate coaching. As well as the coaching courses I will be available to all the coaches if they need help with any aspect of the game. “And it is not all about playing we must ensure that the players are given the right nutrition and hydration advice depending on their age and also the proper advice on training and rest. “Basketball has been very good to me and continues to be so. I have been steeped in the game since a young age and especially as my

father Tomas coached the Irish team and am now really looking forward to giving something back to the game. If we have the coaches with the right skill set then the players will get the proper coaching and the great tradition of the club in producing top- class players will continue.”
are why Garvey’s Tralee Warriors are the envy of many of the clubs in the SuperLeague. Put in the aforementioned fans and there is no doubt this club has something special. Now we got to out and do it on the court and we are certainly determined as a squad to do this. Roll on September 29th!!
PRICE READY FOR PRODUCTIVE SEASON: At that launch in Sandy Feet Farm I also caught up with new Garvey’s Tralee Warriors coach Pat Price. He is well into his first pre-season and is happy with the way things are going in the club. Warriors have been hugely impressive since they joined the SuperLeague with backto-back Champions Trophies in the cabinet. Price is hugely experienced in the game at club and national level and said that he is really looking forward to the season starting on September 29th. “What an opener to look forward to – a home derby game against Keane’s Supervalu Killorglin. We know that the Complex will be rocking as it is for every home game. It gives the team a huge boost to hear the cheers as they take to the court. “We are working hard to get the team to gel as they get used to my way of doing things. Yes we have lost Trae Pemberton and Goran Pantovic but are delighted to have Jordan Evans from Texas and Latvian Janis Dumburs join us and they are really working hard. “Of course we know that it will take them a few games to get used to the League and the way teams play but we have a great blend of experience and youth and these will help the new boys to settle in. “Players like Kieran Donaghy, Darragh O’Hanlon and others have a wonderful attitude and want to improve at early training session. When you have players like that it drives everyone else on and it makes training more enjoyable for all. Warriors have put together a great organisation, on and off the court, and it is wonderful when we are training or getting ready for games to see so many volunteers and all on top of their individual roles. These people and much as the players and coaches
DAY OF DESTINY FOR THE MINORS: Sunday is D Day for this year’s Minor team as Peter Keane’s charges look to add another win to Kerry’s 29 game unbeaten run at minor level and win the All Ireland title for an amazing 5th time in a row. Each season the minor squad is almost completely a new one and this is certainly the story this year as the age group is now u17’s. There has been some talk by experts and pundits as to whether the minor final should still be the curtain raiser to the senior game now that player of 16 and 17 are being put under this intense spotlight. One suggestion was that the Ladies All Ireland final becomes the curtain raiser to the men’s game and the minor moves to a different venue – possibly before a secondary competition. However all that is for another day. All Kerry eyes will be on Croke Park from 1pm when Galway attempt to be the latest county to stop a Kingdom side going for 5-in-a-row. They carry every good wish from all of us here at the Tralee Advertiser.
Friday 31st August 2018
LIXNAW WIN THANKS TO PENALTY STOP: Congratulations to Lixnaw as they were crowned Garvey’s County Senior Hurling Champions last weekend in a finish that a script writer would find hard to make believable. Going into the 5th minute of added time, the 5th minute compared to 2 minutes that was announced, and Lixnaw held a 2 point lead 1-16 to 2-11. A long free was dropped ‘Hail Mary’ style into the Lixnaw box by Seanie Murnane and in the scramble Daniel Collins was fouled and referee Fergal Horgan blew for a penalty. However he indicated to Collins that once the penalty was hit the game was over so either a goal or a defeat was the scenario. And Marin Stackpoole wrote
another chapter in his illustrious hurling career by making the save. As soon as the ball was stopped Horgan blew the final whistle and while the ball was put into the net the reaction of some of the Kilmoyley players dropping to their knees meant they knew the outcome. However it is possible that some didn’t hear what the ref said and took their frustration out on the referee and his officials. This was a disappointing end to the Championship and to the game and did not reflect well on Kilmoyley. I am sure that the authorities will look into who was involved. But after the dust settled the only outcome that matters is that Lixnaw have won their 9th County Championship. Now they can turn attention to Munster. PARNELLS NEWS: It has been a great season for our Minors who have reached the County League Final in their debut season. We will have the result of their game against Ardfert next week but whatever the outcome the players and coaches deserve great credit for their season to date. The u13’s took on Ballyheigue in mid-week in the u13 B North Kerry final and we will know next week how they got on. They had a very good run-out before the final when the defeated Crotta in a challenge game 3-10 to 2-09. The Kerry U15 team beat Carlow and narrowly lost to Wexford by a penalty in the 4th minute of additional time in Tipperary at the weekend. Well done to Jerome Daly, Tadhg Reen and Niall Cassidy who did Tralee Parnells proud. The u10’s enjoyed their Blitz in Abbeydorney at the weekend and thank the North Kerry club for their invitation. They defeated the hosts as well as Lixnaw and Causeway showing how much they have come on since the first blitz of the season. They also had a great day at the Bill Mangan Blitz in Muckross Killarney. The u10’s will train at the usual times this week ahead of the home blitz on September 8th in Caherslee. Kerry at Camogie All Ireland: The club is planning to take a supporters bus to the Camogie All Ireland final. Please contact the officers if you are interested in booking a seat. As Kerry are playing in the Junior final for the first time with a 12 noon throw-in the bus will leave at 7am. Parnells Camogie U8 and U10’s Back to School Blitz gets underway this Saturday, September 1st in Caherslee with the action from 9.30am. Family Fun Race Night: Tralee Parnells main fundraiser of the year takes place on Saturday 15th September @ 7:30pm in The Rose Hotel. TALKING SPORT WITH THE TRALEE ADVERTISER BALLYMAC NEWS: There was no winner from the numbers drawn 7,11, 21 and 27 with the next jackpot being e6,200. Many of the club’s younger players are now back to school so they already be looking forward to the weekend. For the u6’s their Academy takes place at 11am on Sunday. In Division 2 of the U12 Central Region the Ballymac Blue team had a very good away win at John Mitchels defeating the Tralee side 5-11 to 2-06. They were in action against Keel in mid-week. In Division 3 the Gold side went down to Austin Stacks B and are off this week. The u14’s travelled to John Mitchels in Round 2 of the Castleisland District League and held out for a good win. This sets them up for a final against Konck/ Brosna Duagh in the final with the time and date to be announced. The u12 Girls teams really enjoyed the Munster LGFA Blitz in Ballyrickard sand it sets the first team up for the North Kerry League Shield Final where they play Desmonds this Saturday evening in Ballymac at 7pm. KERRY 1978 FOOTBALL TEAM HONOURED BY GPA: The team that was part of Kerry’s four in a row journey is being honoured and celebrated by the GPA at the GPA Former Players Reunion Lunch, which will take place this Saturday on the eve of the All-Ireland football final. Proceeds from this event will go toward the GPA Former Players Benevolent Fund. This was the year that saw Kerry thrash Dublin 5-11 to 0-09 and contained some of the best Kerry players of all time led by Mick O’Dwyer. It will be bitter /sweet for the players with the late great Paidi O’Se on everyone’s mind on the day. This was also the final where Mikey Sheehy’s chip into the net over Paddy Cullen had the Dublin net minder ‘running back like a women who left a cake in the over’ as one late commentator said! STACKS JUNIOR STORIES: The u6’s, u8’s and u10’s welcomed Milltown/Castleimaine for a great morning’s football. The return trip will take place this Sunday where another series of great games are expected. The Bracker Regan League’s continue on Thursdays as does the John Galvin Trophy while the teams will be heading for the John Mitchels Under 8 Blitz on Saturday September 15th. The u12’s continue in Kelliher’s Toyota Tralee Central League action while the u13’s are lookoing forward to the Denis O’Connor/Lee Strand Tournament. The u16’s continue to train on Fridays while a number of them were in action with the Tralee Board in mid-week.
ST PAT’S NEWS: There was no winner of the Lotto from the numbers drawn 1,6,15 and 26 and the next jackpot will be e2,200 with the draw in Skelper Quane’s. The u6’s were out in force again last weekend showing off their skills which are improving every week. The u8’s were also in training and put in a good session despite the blustery conditions. And the u10’s continue their early development in the game and training for all ages continues this Sunday at 10.30am. The u14 Girls were at home to Kerins O’Rahillys B last night, Thursday, in the North Kerry Board League Round 4. The boys will be in action in the St Brendan’s League playing Churchill and Ballyheigue in a Blitz format from 12 noon on September 16th in Blennerville. The Senior B Team were scheduled to play Glenflesk last week in a qualifier but they had to forfeit the match due to their inability to field a team. This now means we will be in the draw for the Barrett Cup competition. More details to follow. In the Senior Football Championship St Brendan’s, with a number of St Pat’s players on the squad, play East Kerry in the second round of the Garvey’s Senior Football Championship this Saturday at 5.30pm in the Fitzgerald Stadium. KERINS O’RAHILLY’S NEWS: All eyes are on the seniors this Saturday as they are in first round action in the Garvey’s Senior County Championship. They take on Feale Rangers, the North Kerry divisional side, in Listowel at 5.30pm. They defeated the same opposition by 6 points in 2016 bit this is a whole new ball game. In the Molyneaux Cup the team travelled to Beaufort to take on the home side who led 1-06 to 0-08 points at the break. In a cracking second half Beaufort scored a second goal at the death to send the game into extra time. But a goal in extra time from Kevin Johnston Horgan saw the Tralee side take the win 20-16 to 2-11. They were due to play in the semi-final tonight. The club had to concede their game against Desmonds in the Barrett Cup. The club is delighted for Shane McElligott who won a senior hurling medal with Lixnaw. The Players of the Week are Jack Lawlor in the u6’s, Davie Jay Flaherty at u10’s while in the Girls at u6 Sophie Conway was the Player of the Week with Lexi Keane and Sarah O’Sullivan taking the honours at u8’s and u10’s. The u11’s will take part in the Jerry Foley Tournament this Saturday, September 1st in Firies. The u12 A’s and B’s took on Ardfert with wins by both. The under 14’s were in the Central Region final where they took on Laune Rangers who won out after a tight game. The u12 Girls were delighted to host 36 teams from 23 clubs in

the Munster Ladies Blitz with action from 11am. Over 400 girls took part in this Fun blitz. The Girls train at all ages at the usual times this week. The u12 and u14 Girls enjoyed their day out to Castlegregory having a great day before heading back to school. The Mamas 7-a-side team are enjoying their training and are looking for a few more ladies to join them. You don’t have to have played any football to join in for the fun. Lotto: There was no winner of the Lotto from the numbers drawn 3,7,14 and 17. KERRY PUSHES CORK COUNTY IN CRICKET’S PREMIER LEAGUE: Kerry did all they could to halt Cork County’s progress in the Munster Premier League but it was the visitors to the Oval that took the win. Cork had Kerry all out for 127 and Cork County were expected to win easily. Cork reached 53-0 but then Kerry hit back and by the time Cork had reached 80 they had lost 4 wickets. However the table toppers re-grouped an took the win. Kerry Seconds took on Midleton’s Firsts at home in the Munster First Division and hit a very good 304 for 9. They got their opponents out for 217 to take the win. This week in the Munster First Division County Kerry 2nds are away to Cork Harlequins at Farmer’s Cross on Saturday while on the same day the Firsts are at home to Cork Harlequins in the Premier Division. THREE MEETS AT THE TRACK: This weekend at the Kingdom Greyhound Stadium on Friday night is the second round heats of the Castleisland Tyre Centre Confined A3 525 yards. On Saturday night it’s the semi-final of the Annascaul GAA Buster A7 525 yards while on Sunday evening there is an 8 race card beginning at 6.36pm. CROSS BAY SWIM A GREAT SUCCESS: The Tralee Bay Swimming Club held a very successful Cross Bay swim from Derrymore to Fenit with 49 people taking to the water. This was a big logistical undertaking by the club and it was all in aid of the RNLI Fenit Lifeboat which will benefit to the tune of over e1400. All those who took part, volunteered, were in the safety boats and provided the food afterwards deserve a big thanks. With two rounds to go in their World Series / Swimmer of the Year Tom Brosnan leads from Rose Browne and Clare Neenan. But anyone from 10 swimmers can still take the title so it is all to swim for. ROWING CLUB OPEN DAY: Staying with water activities but this time in a boat rather than in the water the Tralee Rowing Club are holding an Open Day at the Canal this Saturday, September 1st, from 11.30am to 2.30pm. It is for those who would like to try Friday 31st August 2018
out the sport and visitors to the club can meet coaches and adult rowers while boats will also be available to try out on the day. Rowers from the club take part in many regattas around the country and were recently in Limerick at the St Michael’s Rowing Club. ON THE GREENS - KERRY PITCH & PUTT CELEBRATES A BIG WIN: Kerry Pitch & Putt is celebrating a national title for the second week in a row. This week it is Deerpark’s Damien Fleming that got on the top step of the podium at the National Championships. This win took part in Seapoint in Co. Louth and follows on from wins by Damien in 2009 and 2011. He led here from almost the first hole and held off all challengers. Damien’s win follows a National Senior Gets Strokeplay success back in July in Glenville, Dublin and comes after a win for the Kerry U-16 team in their National InterCounty event the previous week in Fermoy. These are exciting times in Pitch & Putt as they gear up to host the National Inter-County Championships in Killarney in two years. But first up this weekend it is the County Matchplay Championships with the u16’s in Listowel and the Seniors in Tralee. Player from all over Kerry are expected to take part in the Ricky Kelly Memorial competition which this year will raise funds for the Ian O’Connell Trust. Because of the connection with the Trust – set up to help Ian who has been such an inspiration to many since being paralysed following a fall from his bike – the Ricky Kelly this year has been opened by the PPUI to members and non-members. The competition takes place on the weekend of September 15th and 16th with and entry fee of e90 per team for adults and e30 for u16 teams. ON THE GREEN – TRALEE GOLF CLUB: In the Ballyroe Heights Hotel Open Classic the winning teams was Damien Griffin, Brendan Griffin and Sandra O’Sullivan. Second was Sean Corcoran, John Shier, Frank Dore and Eoin Shier. The Best Ladies Team was Nuala Dawson, Angela Deenihan, Antoinette Sayers and Veronique Davern. In the Men’s Tankard Bar and Restaurant Festival Open Singles the winner was Edmund Buckley from David Hennebery with James O’Shea in third. The +18 handicap prize went to Bryan Leahy. The Ladies prize for the same competition was won by Bairbre Reen with Catherine McCarthy in second and Laura Rafferty in third. In the MC 14 Tralee Townhouse competition Daniel O’Loughlin won the Men’s section from Pat Williams with Eamon Fitzgerald winning the +18 section.

IT’S ONLY A JOKE COLONEL SANDERS CALLS UP THE POPE
“Your holiness”, he says. “My business is losing money and I need help. I’ll donate 10 million dollars to the Vatican if you change the Lord’s prayer from ‘Give us this day our daily bread’ to ‘Give us this day our daily chicken’”. “I’m sorry, Mr. Sanders” the pope replies. “I cannot change the word of God. I wish you good luck with your business.” A month later, Colonel Sanders calls back, even more desperate. “50 million dollars to the Vatican”, he says, “if you change the Lord’s prayer from ‘Give us this day our daily bread’ to ‘Give us this day our daily chicken’”. “I’m sorry Mr. Sanders. The word of God is sacred and can’t be changed”, the pope replies. “You’ll have to try something else.” A month later, Colonel Sanders calls back in pure desperation. “Please, your holiness. My sales are in the hole. I’ll donate 100 million dollars to the Vatican if you change the Lord’s prayer from ‘Give us this day our daily bread’ to ‘Give us this day our daily chicken’”. The pope sighs and says, “OK, let me get back to you.” He then calls up his bishops and says, “Gentlemen, I have good news and bad news. The good news is, KFC will be donating 100 million dollars to the Vatican.” The bishops erupt in cheers. After quieting down, one asks, “and the bad news?” The pope replies solemnly, “we will be losing the Wonder Bread account”.
