Medical Matters “THE THYROID GLAND” by Dr Kevin Ryle The thyroid gland sits in front of your neck, just under the adam's apple. It produces thyroid hormone (T3 and T4) which is vital to control many systems in our body. Iodine from your diet is used by the thyroid gland to produce these hormones. By communicating with two other glands in the brain, the pituitary and the hypothalmus, the thyroid gland is able to maintain thyroid hormone levels at the level required for the body's needs. Sometimes our bodies need more (pregnancy, periods of growth) or less thyroid hormone than usual and the thyroid gland responds by altering the amount of thyroid hormone it releases. Thyroid hormone is released from the thyroid gland and travels around the body in the blood stream. It has a crucial role to play in how all our cells function and if there is an imbalance in the levels of thyroid hormone then we can feel unwell and experience a great number of symptoms. An underactive thyroid gland (Hypothyroidism) is when the thyroid gland does not produce enough thyroid hormone for the body's needs.
As a result, you may feel excessively tired, feel the cold more than usual, gain weight, suffer from bowel problems such as constipation, experience low mood/depression, have dry skin and thinning of your hair. An overactive thyroid gland (Hyperthyroidism) is when the thyroid gland produces more thyroid hormone than the body needs. Symptoms can include weight loss, palpitations, excessive sweating, anxiety, heat intolerance and sometimes sore and gritty eyes. If you suspect you have a problem with your thyroid gland you should visit your GP. He/she will take a history to assess your symptoms, examine your neck, and may advise that you have a blood test to check your thyroid hormone levels. Treatment is available and is dependent on the type of thyroid disorder that you are diagnosed with. While most thyroid problems can be managed by your GP, some people may need to be referred to a hormone specialist (endocrinologist) for further investigations and treatment. Very rarely a lump may grow in the thyroid gland and this may need an ultrasound scan or a biopsy to rule out a thyroid cancer which is very rare.

Parknasilla Resort And Spa Welcomes A New General Manager Parknasilla is delighted to announce the appointment of Donald Morrissy as Resort General Manager. Morrissy, a graduate of The Shannon College of Hotel Management brings with him extensive experience from his association with some of Ireland’s highly regarded establishments. He has held senior management positions with the Macdonald Hotel Group UK, The Doyle Collection & The Clarion Hotel Group. All of this lays him in good stead to take the reins here and lead a resort team with staff numbers exceeding 155 - in peak Summer - and to ensure that Parknasilla continues to standout as one of Ireland’s leading four star hotels with a reputation for five star standards. Morrissy adds “I have a few weeks under my belt already and I am hugely impressed 2

with what I have observed so far. Parknasilla is already a very successful hotel and it is for me to now make it even better. In the coming months, I will concentrate on how we can improve on the overall guest experience, with view to delivering even higher standards and some new additions for our new and many returning guests in 2019” Morrissy will report to the Managing Director Tony Daly. Tony has been at the helm of Parknasilla since the new owners came on board December 2012, and in this time the resort has enjoyed significant revenue growth. Tony comments “finding the right candidate for this role was not easy, I was happy to bide my time and my patience has paid off. Donald’s first month at Parknasilla was the busiest in the hotel’s history Friday 14th September 2018
and he settled in with ease and his contribution was commendable, so we are both looking forward to the road ahead because in this
business you can never stand still – you must always be improving”

Billy simplifies and explains Todays Technology How can I take credit card payments on the move ?
Most of my services are done in a persons home or business so I was looking for an easy way for the customer to pay me because not everyone has cash to hand ....So I looked into getting a credit card terminal. As I researched it I found that most charge a rental and a percentage on each transition and as everyone knows once you do a search online, the adverts start filling your browser. One took my interest, which was Sum-up credit card terminal, so I registered my account and purchase one and to my surprise it is very easy to use. It connects to your mobile phone or tablet via Bluetooth .Once payment is accepted then you have the option in emailing the receipt or by text. In order to process the transition you must be able to connect to the internet with your device. The cost per transaction is 1.69 percent, no rental cost. which is quite low .

Say goodbye to dentures and adhesives forever!
Are you tired of sore gums, ill fitting dentures and messy denture adhesive? Would you love to smile and eat with confidence?
Teeth in a Day (All on 4) is a proven, revolutionary dental treatment for a patient that is missing all their natural teeth and who is tired of wearing an ill fitting and often sore denture. While there are many options available to people who struggle with an ill-fitting denture, our ‘Teeth in a Day’ (Implant Supported Bridges) offer you the chance to throw your denture away for good and feel the benefits of never having to worry about a denture again. They are a permanent solution that with proper care will never need to be replaced. Implant Supported Bridges are attached to dental implants for a permanent new set of teeth that look and feel natural and are non removable. No more putting your dentures in a glass overnight. Instead you brush your teeth as you would with natural teeth, in fact some of our patients have commented ‘it feels like my own teeth grew back!’
Restore your smile, your chewing ability and your confidence in just one day. Missing teeth causes bone loss. Significant bone loss can shrink the contours of the jaw bone, causing wrinkled lips and a sunken mouth and chin. Teeth in a Day Fixed Implant Supported Bridges are a durable solution with natural looking replacement teeth. There’s no plate. It’s simply secured on four or more dental implants. This solution stimulates bone maintenance, restores chewing function, and gets rid of the uncomfortable and painful feeling of wearing dentures.
Advantages of ‘Teeth in a Day’ Fixed Implant Supported Bridges (All on 4)
• No more painful and ill fitting dentures • Natural looking smile restored • Fully fixed and non-removable • Chewing ability is restored, can chew all types of food • No more removing dentures or denture adhesive • Prevents further bone loss • Go from no teeth, to fixed teeth in one day • Minimal pain/discomfort during procedure • Recovery time is minimal

Your smile, Our expertise... Teeth in a Day
How it works
At your free consultation, we’ll take the time to listen to you, address your concerns and questions and fully explain the procedure and the options available to you. If you decide to proceed, a full clinical examination will be carried out by Dr. Colm O’Loghlen including X rays and 3D CT scanning. We are one of only a few clinics in Ireland with a CT scanner on site. This minimises patient inconvenience and allows for the most advanced analysis of your teeth and needs. The full implant procedure is carried out in one day. The implants are placed in the morning and you leave that afternoon with fully fixed teeth having thrown your denture in the bin!
Nervous?
"No one should ever go to bed with their teeth in a glass" Per-Ingvar Brånemark, Inventor of the Dental Implant.
Testimonials “I am so happy. Colm really has changed my life” “I had sedation – the time did fly! I had 4 implants in my upper jaw. I didn’t feel them going in, and it didn’t hurt at all”
If you’re nervous, no problem, the procedure is pain free, and some of our patients elect to have a IV sedation or a mild oral sedative to complete the treatment.
“My enjoyment of food – the flavour and the texture is just so much better”
LOCAL – Have all your treatment completed in Tralee with Dr Colm O’Loghlen.
“I am so thrilled to show off my teeth – and all my friends and family can see why I went for this option. No way I’d go back. No regrets.”
SAFER – With our own CT Scanning equipment, digitally planning your procedure results in safer implant placement. KINDER – Dr Colm O’Loghlen’s experience, training and technology investment, leads to quicker surgery, reduced swelling and improved recovery time.
We’ve just been honored to be announced as the only accredited All-on-4 implant provider in Kerry and Cork. We’ve been recognised due to Dr O’Loghlens extensive experience.

Bexblah Beauty HELLO BEAUTIFUL PEOPLE! I HOPE YOU’RE ALL HAVING AN AMAZING WEEK. THIS WEEK I’M TALKING ALL THINGS MAKEUP TOOLS! After my skin decided to go all out of whack… I decided to go back to using my 100% go to skincare products only. I’m going to write this in order of the steps I do my skincare routine in so that it’s easier to follow!
1.
MAKEUP REMOVER- on days I am wearing makeup I use the DHC Deep Cleansing Facial Oil to remove it before cleansing. I got this in the gift bag at the Makeup By Mario Masterclass & I love how easily it melts away my makeup. You can get it online & it costs about €30
4.
MOISTURISER - I switch up my moisturiser a bit, I like to try new ones. My current moisturiser is one I used before and have gone back to, the Kiehls Ultra Facial Cream (SPF 30), you can get this for any skin type (there’s an oil free version too) & it’s important for everyone to have an SPF on their face daily.
5.
EYES - You might remember a few months back I was trying out the Neutrogena Hydro Boost range for a while as I wanted to use skincare that was a bit more budget friendly. I’m obsessed with everything in that range & use the Hydro Boost Eye Cream daily to hydrate my Eye area.
2.
CLEANSER - if you know anything about me and skincare you know Kiehls is one of my ride or die skincare brands. For cleanser I use the Kiehls Calendula Facial Wash, always. Amazing for acne prone skin.
3.
MY SECRET WEAPON This product has become an absolute must have in my skincare routine, the La Roche Posay Duo + Cream. I’m absolutely obsessed and would recommend it to anyone who suffers with acne prone skin, blackheads, texture or scarring. It makes my skin tone and texture so much better and I just have to have this.
6.
NIGHT TIME - In the night my routine is basically the same but instead of my daily moisturiser I use the Kiehls Midnight Recovery Concentrate. I love this, it’s amazing.

BEXBLAH
FITNESS!
HELLO MY STRONG STRONG FRIENDS! I hope you’re all enjoying this amazing week! This week I’m going to be talking about one of my favourite things LEG DAY.
LEG PRESS: 2 warmup sets of 40-60kg followed by 3 working sets of 70-90kg WALKING LUNGES: 5 sets of walking up and down the gym floor with 6-8kg dumbbells
Why I love training legs, the benefits, my typical leg day workout and more. So if you wanna know more…
GLUTE HAMSTRING RAISES: 5 sets of 10 reps with 10kg weight CABLE PULL THROUGH: 5 sets of 10 reps with 12-17kg weight WEIGHTED GLUTE BRIDGE: 5 sets of 10 reps with weight
Keep reading. I literally had trouble walking after leg day th s week… not good. I think my love of training legs stems from a lot of things, the main one being that I always saw my legs as my ‘problem area’, so when I started training them and saw changes and progress, I got addicted to training legs.
Glutes. These movements also target your core strength, winning!
The legs are one of the largest parts of the whole body, and I love how toned strong legs look, so I train with that goal in mind. Also, when you train legs you’re also training your bum - and who doesn’t love a good bum!
I’ve recently started encorparating GVT(German Volume Training) into one of my leg days. So on one of my leg days, I will do every movement aka squat, lunge, deadlift - for 10 reps and 10 sets at a weight that isn’t too heavy but is still a struggle for the last two sets.
Luckily for us women, we are stronger in the legs than in any other part. We’re actually stronger in the legs than men are in relation to the rest of our bodies. So we’ve no excuse not to have strong toned legs! A lot of leg exercises such as squats, leg press and lunges, are compound movements - which means they involve more than one muscle group so you’ll be working all three of the leg groups, Quads, Hamstrings &
26
TRALEE ADVERTISER
Also, all women have cellulite. It’s inevitable and isn’t something to be ashamed of, but having more muscle mass in your legs can significantly reduce the appearance of it. Just saying.
Leg workouts when done correctly, are hard. You will be out of breath, sweating and feeling the burn.
TODAY’S LEG DAY
WARMUP: 10 mins of either uphill walking or the stairmaster SQUATS: 2 warmup sets just with the bar followed by 3 working sets with 10 reps of 60-80kg GOOD MORNINGS: 5 sets of 10-15 reps with just the bar

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... No more butts on Tralee’s streets the aim of novel new cigarette Butt Ballot Bin on the Mall CIGARETTE butts account for nearly 50% of all litter on the streets of towns and cities across Ireland but a new project aimed at encouraging smokers to put their butts in a bin has been launched in Tralee. Tralee Chamber Alliance’s Environmental Task Force through the Glan Initiative and in partnership with Kerry County Council has erected a Butt Ballot Bin on the Mall. It was launched by the Mayor of Tralee, Cllr Graham Spring, Shane O’Connor from the Environmental Task Force and Cara Keane, the Glan Tralee Program Manager. Shane O’Connor, a volunteer with Tralee’s Environmental Task Force, said: “Each bin displays a topical question with two possible answers and smokers vote by dropping their cigarette butt into the slot underneath their preferred answer. Over time the butts pile up showing which answer is the most popular. The bins use the ‘nudge’ theory behaviour-change approach and are a fun way to get people engaged in putting
cigarette butts in a bin. The questions on the bins will be changed regularly and will be a mixture of humorous and topical questions. As Irish people and more especially as Kerry people we have an opinion on everything and we like to have our opinion heard and we are hoping that this urge will be too strong to for smokers to ignore. From now on in Tralee every butt matters! While the ultimate solution is for smokers to kick the habit, the Environmental Task Force hopes that Kerry County Council will erect a number of Butt Ballot Bins around Tralee to help remove a major cause of litter in the town. Cllr Graham Spring, said: “There’s a perception that because of the small size of a cigarette butt, people don’t see it as littering when they drop it on the street. We need to break that cycle and change people’s behaviour so that they see their cigarette butt as litter and dispose of it correctly. It’s not uncommon to see someone walking down the street flick their cigarette butt on the ground and then
turn and throw their empty coffee cup in the bin. That person understands what litter is but doesn’t see their cigarette butt as litter.” The question on the first Butt Ballot Bin, which was erected on the Mall in Tralee, has asked smokers who they would like to see as Ireland’s next President – Michael D Higgins or someone else. The question will be changed in the
next few weeks. Tralee Chamber Alliance is inviting local businesses (members and non-members) to engage with the Steering Group with a view to working on similar projects over the coming months. To join Tralee Chamber Alliance, contact business@tralee.ie or call 066 7121472.
Well done to all the Junior certs ! Coláiste Gleann Lí students receiving their results during the week

TORQUING CARS! BUYING AN EX-HIRE CAR: PROS AND CONS
Big numbers of rental cars start to come on the market from now on. It’s a good time to prepare to capitalise on nearly-new cars at reduced prices, especially when you can invoke comparisons with, admittedly often older, used imports. In rentals’ favour is good choice. And as a typical rental period is around six months, most will be quite fresh. Values slot between a nearly-new demo model and one-year-old. You should benefit substantially from depreciation of a car that’s six months old and second-hand. You are buying a used car. When you trade it in, that will be reflected in its price. While rentals tend to be looked after, some may have had a tough time - from those not used to a manual gearbox, for example. Cars are still well within warranty, but you don’t need the hassle. Remember too if you go into a dealership to buy new, you can expect a reduction in price whether cash or finance-deal customer. That can narrow the gap between hire-drive and brand new car. Ultimately, the value of a rental is dependent on the car as well, as whoever is selling. There will always be good deals. Now is a good time to start looking. (Eddie Cunningham Indo.ie)
FINAL KICKDOWN
I am trying to finalise an order for a VW Passat, petrol, automatic 1.8- or 2.0-litre TSI. The 1.8 would meet my needs, but if it has the dry-clutch DSG it might have the gremlins reported with smaller engines. The 2.0-litre comes with a six-speed ’box, but the dealer reckons that a seven-speed might be possible. Can you advise? JW The dealer is right in suspecting that new Passats might soon get the DQ381/DQ500 seven-speed wet clutch DSG, which will eventually succeed the DQ250 six-speed. What you don’t want is the DQ200 seven-speed dry clutch DSG, which might be fitted to a 1.8.
HAS CAT BEEN FED?
My Jaguar XF 2.7 diesel is due its 10-year service but has done only 50,000 miles. I know the cambelt will need to be replaced, but what other items should I renew? JT It would be good to have the transmission fluid changed. A Jaguar dealer might say it’s “sealed for life” (which means a short “life”). If he does, take the car to a member of www.fedauto.co.uk to get the work done.
STILL NO CURRENT FOR EVS
Sales of electric cars are on the increase but they fall short of government targets New car sales figures released last week confirm that electric cars are on the rise, with sales up 102pc on last year. To date, more than 1,078 new electric vehicles (EVs) have been sold and 458 imported, compared with fewer than 1,000 new and imported for the entire of 2017. Hybrid and plug-in hybrid models continue to attract buyers and more than 7,350 hybrids have been bought this year alone. The term ‘hybrid’ refers to a patchwork of alternatives, from mild hybrid to a plug-in hybrid (PHEV). All hybrid systems have a regular combustion engine, an electric motor and a battery pack and all produce some emissions, so cannot be considered electric cars. With a PHEV, the battery can be plugged in directly and charged as you would an EV, allowing for an electric-only range of up to 50km. More than 90pc of hybrids bought this year were conventional or “self-charging” hybrids. Opting for regular hybrids indicates that many motorists are still wary of the lack of charge points and the time it takes to recharge. And with good reason. Despite the 1,200 ESB charging points around the country, the poor reliability of the charging infrastructure remains a huge stumbling block. A significant factor when buying an electric car is how easily it can be charged and the time this takes. While it is considerably cheaper to run an electric vehicle ¬- it costs less than €4 to travel 300km - these substantial savings have not been enough to convince buyers to convert. This is due in part to the perception that new electric vehicles cost more to buy than petrol or diesel equivalents. The average cost of a new car in Ireland is €28,000, and three of the best-selling EVs, the Nissan Leaf, Hyundai Ioniq and the Renault Zoe, are all priced below or barely above that price point. And EVs have fewer moving parts so maintenance and servicing costs are much less, considerably reducing the total cost of ownership. Another major roadblock to mass EV adoption lies with the Government. To support the switch to zero-emission vehicles, a reliable and extensive charging infrastructure is needed. Motorists may only drive 30km a day but they still want the security of knowing they can travel 300km if they need to. The availability of a free charging network is regularly cited as an incentive; however, charging for usage and investing in the network may yield more results. Government has a major role to play in shaping the adoption of EVs, but more important are carmakers in this future. Apart from the convenience, a significant reason why consumers are opting for hybrids over pure EVs is that carmakers have launched only a small number of fully electric models. Next year will see a raft of new models from big manufacturers. Mercedes has just unveiled its first fully electric SUV, the EQC, arriving here next year, while Audi will unleash its E-tron at the end of the year. The onus is not simply on the Government to encourage people to buy electric; the push must come from car dealerships. Showroom staff are central to ensuring that buyers have the information they need to understand the benefits. Allowing longer test drives and having dedicated EV sales experts would also be a positive move. (independent motoring ) 32

GOLF
A man staggers into an emergency room with a concussion, multiple bruises, two black eyes and a five iron wrapped tightly around his throat. Naturally, the doctor asks him what happened. “Well, it was like this,” said the man. “I was having a quiet round of golf with my wife, when at a difficult hole, we both sliced our balls into a pasture of cows.” “We went to look for them, and while I was rooting around noticed one of the cows had something white at its rear end. I walked over and lifted up the tail, and sure enough, there was a golf ball with my wife’s monogram on it-- stuck right in the middle of the cow’s butt.” “That’s when I made my big mistake.” “What did you do?” asks the doctor. “Well, I lifted the cow’s tail again and yelled to my wife, Hey, this looks like yours!” “I don’t remember much after that”!
A FARMER HAD 5 FEMALE PIGS BUT TIMES WERE HARD AND HE NEEDED A SOLUTION.
A farmer had 5 female pigs. Times were hard, so he decided to take them to the county fair and sell them. At the fair, he met another farmer who owned 5 male pigs. After talking a bit, they decided to mate the pigs and split everything 50/50. The farmers lived 60 miles apart, so they decided to drive 30 miles each morning and find a field in which to let the pigs mate. The first morning, the farmer with the female pigs

got up at 5 a.m., loaded the pigs into the family station wagon (the only vehicle he had) and drove the 30 miles. While the pigs were in the field mating, he asked the other farmer, “How will I know if they are pregnant?” The other farmer replied, “If they’re lying in the grass tomorrow morning, they’ll be pregnant. If they’re lying in the mud, they’re not.” The next morning the pigs were rolling in the mud. So he hosed them off, loaded them into the family station wagon again and proceeded to try again. This continued each morning for more than a week and the farmers were worn out. The next morning, one was too tired to even get out of bed. So he called out to his wife, “Honey, please look outside and tell me whether the pigs are in the mud or in the grass.” “Neither,” yelled his wife, “They’re in the station wagon. And one of them is honking the horn.”
SO I WAS AT MY BANK TODAY.
There was a short line. There was just one lady in front of me, an Asian lady who was trying to exchange yuan for dollars. It was obvious she was a little irritated. She asked the teller, “Why it change? Yesterday, I get two hundred dollar for yuan. Today I only get hundred eighty? Why it change?” The teller shrugged his shoulders and said, “Fluctuations. The Asian lady says, “Fluck you white people too!”
MY FRIEND WAS THINKING OF GETTING A LABRADOR. I had to talk him out of it: “Have you seen how many of their owners go blind?!?”

TALKING SPORT WITH THE TRALEE ADVERTISER EVERYTHING’S COMING UP ROSES!
with “The Voice” Pat Harnett
FAI NATIONAl P.R.O. OF THE YEAR STAR WILL STILL SHINE BRIGHT: This week brought the not unexpected announcement by Kieran Donaghy that he is calling it a day on his inter-county career. The reaction from the media and fellow players from the county and all around the country shows the impact he had on the game and the esteem in which he is held. He certainly brought an new dimension to Kerry’s play when he started out nearly 14 years ago and continued to give it his all up to his last game. He certainly dispelled the rumour that dual players can’t be successful. But in his case it was GAA and basketball and there is no doubt his skills on the court, that saw him play for Ireland, certainly worked to Kerry’s advantage. However there are much more qualified sports journalists and pundits in Kerry to review his legacy to Kerry football than me. The good news for sports fans is that he will still be playing on the basketball courts and probably club football. But what is really impressive about Star is that he is as comfortable with top sports or business people as he is with ordinary fans. He is always the last player to leave the court at the Warriors games and always makes time for the young and not so young fans that want pictures with him. He has a successful career, a lovely family and huge respect from the sporting community. His book is one of the most honest sports books that you will read. It showed that like all of us he had his challenges as well. But he overcame them and from a sporting front is a role model to young players with his work ethic and how he handles himself on and off the field or the court. From a Kerry GAA point of view the star is gone out but there is no doubt the Star will shine brightly in the next phase of his life. And we thank him for the memories over the last 13 years in the Green and Gold. TRADITION AND FAMILY ON THE SOCCER PITCH: While soccer in Kerry is still relatively new it is certainly building up a family tradition that is very nice to see. And this was very evident at the over Dominos Over

35’s final when Tralee Dynamos got the better of a gallant Listowel Celtic side. Ross O’Connor was the captain of the Tralee Dynamos on the night and his father Michael ‘Fox’ O’Connor was a member of the team that won their first trophy The Murphy Cup in 1967/68. Also on team at the KDL was Mark Fitzgerald whose family has ties with Dynamos from the beginning and his father Nedo was also on the Murphy Cup winning team. Indeed Mark had his son Cian with him who is now a member of the Dynamos Academy so the family connection continues. Thanks to Noel White who posted a picture of that Murphy Cup winning team which contains some great names of the game – Noel Conroy, Tim Counihan, Nedo Fitzgerald, Gordon Kerins, Francie Roche. Michael Fox O’Connor, Gerald Fitzgibbon, Denis Foley, Frank Hennessy, Tommy Conroy, Jimmy O’Connor, David Fitzgerald. If anyone has more information on the Murphy Cup and who is was called after then please drop us an email. Back to the Over 35 win and this Tralee Dynamos were very impressive on the night with a number of the players in great shape and still well able to play the game at a high level, indeed a number are still playing. So for all those who will be researching the archives of Tralee Dynamos in 50 years the squad that won the Dominos Over 35 Cup 2017/2018 were: John Fitzgerald, Dessie Benson, Maurice O’Rahilly, Ross O’Connor, Jonathan Burrows, Mark Fitzgerald, Kevin McCannon, Billy Stack, Eoin Cassidy, Eddie Duggan, John Farragher, Pa Daly, Niall Feehan, Mike Lynch and Damien Diggins. Before we leave the Dominos Over 35s game well done to John Regan and the KDL on organising this competition and give players of this age the chance to play the game they have loved for years. I wonder if there is an appetite in Tralee for a Ladies version – probably at 7-a-side. Maybe for the first year Tralee Dynamos and The Park could put together a Ladies Over 35v team and they could play before next seasons Men’s final. Over to the clubs and maybe Friday 14th September 2018
we can get the trophy and medals sponsored for it!! SOCCER SEASON UNDERWAY IN KERRY: The Kerry Schoolboys and the Kerry District League seasons got underway last weekend. Dynamos and The Park suffered some opening day losses at the uneven ages but there is a long season ahead and these players will certainly develop over the next 9 months. It was great to see The Park and Fenit u16 Girls team playing out an exciting 3-3 draw in their friendly game. Lauren Dowling hit a hattrick for the Park with Muireann O’Brien, Saoirse Donovan and Leah Galloway on the mark for Fenit. The Girls League will get underway in the next few weeks. In the KDL Rattoo Rovers had a big win over the Park in the u17 League while in Denny Division 1A Strand Road FC defeated Asdee Rovers with late goals and The Park and Classic FC were beaten in Division 1B. VICTORY SHIELD OFFICIALLY LAUNCHED: There were a number of FAI officials including team manager Paul Osam in Tralee for the official launch of the Victory Shield at the Rose Hotel. This prestigious u16 tournament will see the following games which should draw a huge crowd to the town for a week at a great time of the year: Monday 12th November: Scotland v Wales St Brendan’s Park at 1pm and Ireland play Northern Ireland in Mounthawk Park at 6pm. On Wednesday it’s Ireland v Wales at Mounthawk Park at 1pm with Northern Ireland taking on Scotland at 6pm in the same venue. On Friday both games are on at 1pm with Scotland taking on Ireland in Tralee Dynamos and Wales playing Northern Ireland in Mouthawk Park. Adult tickets costing just e10 that will get you into all the games are on sale from John and the Committee at the KDL. It will be a week not to be missed for all sports fans. KERRY CAMOGIE TEAM COME UP JUST SHORT ON HISTORIC
DAY: 2018 will always be the year Kerry camogie made history as they reached Croke Park and the Premier Junior Final. However the old saying of you must lose one to win one was apt on the day as Dublin who had lost last year’s decider took the win. Kerry, who were cheered on by a big travelling support which was great to see went down 1-12 to 0-06 after a good fight. Patrice Diggin hit 5 frees and Louise Collins the other point and the girls will only come on from this great run. There is great work being done and hopefully they will be back again next year. KERRY 14’S CAMOGIE TEAM ALSO IN DUBLIN: The Kerry u14 camogie team were also in Dublin where they took part in the All Ireland Blitz. They defeated Wicklow and Cavan and drew with Tyrone. This led onto a semi-final clash with Westmeath which again the Kingdom girls won. They went through to the Michael Kennedy Final where Mayo were the opposition and on this occasion it was the Western side the won out by the narrowest of margins – 2-06 to 2-05. The girls put in a great effort all day under the management of Kevin O’Sullivan and Michael Corridon of Cillard, Mike Roger O’Sullivan of Tralee Parnells and Team Administrator Gina O’Donoghue of Causeway. THE LEE STRAND TOURNAMENT: The Denis O’Connor / Lee Strand Tournament is organised by the Austin Stack Club. It was sponsored by Lee Strand. It was dedicated to the memory of the late Dinny O’Connor who waschief organiser up to two years ago. From an Austin Stacks point of view their teams reached the Billy Breen Shield final. Beating Dublins Clontarf to reach the decider. They just lost out to Na Piarsaigh in the final 3-08 to 2-09. The main final of the competition saw Nemo Rnagers just defeating Ennistymon 3-03 to 2-05. Dubln youngster Mark McGlynn (Ballyboden/St Enda’s) was the James Hobbert Player of the Tournament and is a name to watch out for into the future. AUSTIN STACKS NEWS: The u6’s and u8’s train as normal this weekend. The Bracker Regan Leagues continue this week with the u8’s and u10’s also taking part in the Blitz at John Mitchels this Saturday with games between 10am and 2pm. The u9’s will go to Glanmire this weekend while the John Galvin Trophy competition also continues this week. The u12’s had an early start as they headed to Dublin for the Kilmacud Blitz in UCD. The A’s came home as champions betaing Douglas, Newbridge Sarsfields and the host club. The B’s also had a good day beating St Gals from Belfast along the way. The u13’s were in the Lee Strand

TALKING SPORT WITH THE TRALEE ADVERTISER Tournament with a separate report earlier in the column while the u16’s are training ahead of their Tralee Board fixtures. PARNELLS NEWS: The club congratulate the u14 Kerry camogie team on their great display at the All Ireland Blitz. The u16’s made a good start in the North Kerry B Championship against Kilmoyley, both teams were missing starters but Parnells were stronger on the day and ran out winners on a final score of 3-10 to 0-07. They have a bye this week so will train. There was a great turn out for the North Kerry u10 Blitz in Caherslee with Ballyheigue winning Group 1 and Crotta taking group 2. It was great for the club to have teams at u19’s and u10’s. Well done to all those who helped make the day a success. They are off to Clonlara in Offaly this weekend. The u12 Boys went down to Crotta in their Division 1 game 2-09 to 1-06. The B’s also lost out to the same clubs B team in Division 3. ST PAT’S NEWS: There was no winner of the Lotto from the numbers drawn 11,17,20 and 25. There was great numbers out for the Academy with Clodagh Kane being named as the Player of the Week at u8’s girls. The u8 and u10 boys will be in Tralee on Saturday for the John Mitchels Blitz. The u14 Girls took on Annascaul in the North Kerry Board with the West Kerry side taking the win. The u14 boys are training for the St Brendan’s League where they will be playing in Group 2. The Minors had a great win in the Central Region Competition defeating the much fancied Annascaul / Lispole side. They played Castlegregory in the final but this was just a step too far. It was a great achievement for them to reach the final. The St Brendan’ s Minor team exited the Championship losing out to St Kierans by just 1 point 2-11 to 2-10. Senior Football Championship - Well done to the St Brendan’s Board Senior team and management on their convincing win against Shannon Rangers last Saturday evening in Tarbert. Final scores were Shannon Rangers 0-16 St Brendan’s Board 6-11. This victory sees them through to the 3rd round where they will play MidKerry this Sunday at 2pm in the Fitzgerald Stadium. BALLYMAC NEWS: There was no winner of the Lotto from the numbers drawn 4,5,12,28 with the next jackpot being e6,400. There was a great turn out for the Academy with all the young players showing great skills. They also enjoyed the visit of Austin Stacks. This year’s U12 Eric Mason Memorial Tournament is on in Ballymac this Saturday the 15th of September. Ballymac will have two teams with the other teams
confirmed for the day being Ardfert, Churchill, Firies, Glanmire, Moyvane and Keel. The u12 girls team welcomed Clare Champions Doora Barefield to Ballymac on Saturday last for a challenge game. Both sides enjoyed the game and the girls will look forward with confidence to the forthcoming Tralee League. Saturday Oct 20th at Ballygarry House Hotel has been provisionally set aside for a Gathering of all club members, players, mentors, officials and Parents of all juveniles to take an in-depth view into the running, coaching and Identity of Ballymac GAA club. It will be facilitated by officers of the County Board and will commence at 7 30pm. Light refreshments will be served on the evening. Please set aside this date as we welcome all those with a vested interest in the Club.
The track is currently taking entries for KGOBA A6 confined starting on September 15th and Novice 750 yards over A1, A3 and A5.
KERINS O’RAHILLYS NEWS: The seniors has a huge win over Dr Crokes and gives them a 3 week break before the quarter finals which are due to take place on the weekend of the 29th and 30th of September.
SURF’S UP FOR KERRY MAN KERRY: Brandon native but now resident in Sligo Kerry Larkin is taking part in the World Surfing Championships in Japan this week as he bids to qualify for the Olympics in 2020. Larkin is a national champion and has also surfed at the European championships. Kerry is part of a 3 person Irish team at the World’s that run from the 15th to the 22nd of September.
KERINS O’RAHILLYS 3-18, DR CROKES 2-16: At half time it looked like this game was over with the Killarney side leading 2-10 to 0-06 points. Rahillys had hit the post and crossbar so they were creating goal chances but not taking them. Despite a Tommy Walsh goal the Tralee side were still down 6 points with 15 minute to go. But then another Walsh goal after he was quickest to react when a 45 came back off the post and it was game on. Karl Mullins goal put the icing on the cake of a great win. This was a win for heart, guts and courage with each of the 20 players contributing enormously to a famous win and the players and management now can sit back until the weekend of the 29th/30th for our quarter final tie. The players and management also thanked the huge support they had at the game. The Academy hosted Milltown / Castlemaine with the u6’s to the u10 boys and girls in action. Fionn Smith, Ava O’Donoghue and Meabh Kennedy were the Player of the Week. The u10 boys are in the John Mitchels Blitz this Saturday. The u12 A’s went down Castleisland while the B’s saw off Na Gaeil. The u13’s were in the Lee Strand Tournament and reached the semifinal before bowing out to Nemo Rangers. Lotto: The Lotto was won by the Moynihan who took home the e5,300 jackpot. AT THE TRACK: The racing at the Kingdom Greyhound Stadium begins on Friday and Saturday at 7.44pm and at 6.32 on Sunday evening. The final of the Castleisland Tyre Centre A3 will take place on Friday September 21st.

TRALEE BAY WORLD SERIES GOES DOWN TO THE LINE: The final round of the Tralee Bay Swimming Club World Series was due to take place on Wednesday night and as I am writing this the weather looks good so it should have gone ahead. The organisers had planned a 1000m swim starting and finishing at Lockes Beach. It was all to swim for with 4 swimmers still battling it out for the Overall title and the battle for the places would also go right down to the finishing line. Well done to all who took part in the series, the organisers who put the event together and all those on safety duty for the swims.
NOT THAT FAR FROM HERE TO CLARE: There is expected to be plenty of Kerry interest in the Clare Stage’s Rally this Sunday. With podium places up for grabs in the Top Part West Coast Rally championship it is an important day for a number of Kerry crews including Mike Quinn and Tony Healy. The rally covers 3 loops of three stages covering around 120km and there will be a ceremonial start on the streets of Ennis on Saturday night. ALL OVER EARLY FOR LIMERICK 3RD AT THE OVAL: Limerick only had 8 players on duty and were all out for just 49 runs as they quickly lost all their 7 wickets. Kerry made short work of the chase and got to 50 in only 10 overs. If Kerry can beat Limerick again it could be enough to see them take third on the table. That game is on this Sunday in Adare. Kerry are at home to Cork Harlequinns in the Munster Premier Division clash this Saturday at the Oyster Oval. The Cork side are chasing second place in the table so will be looking for a win in Fenit. CASH FOR CLUBS: As you may be aware the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport last week announced a further round of the Sport Capital Programme. A total of €40million will be made available to different sports around the country. The application portal opened at 9am on Friday 7th September and will close at 5pm on Friday Friday 14th September 2018
19th October, 2018. Any club or organisation wishing to make an application under the Programme must be registered on OSCAR by 5pm on Friday 5th October, 2018. A guide on how to register, make an application and other important information can be found on the following link: https://www. sportscapitalprogramme.ie/ ON THE GREEN’S: PITCH & PUTT: Kerry had to settle for 4th place at the Men’s National Inter-County Pitch & Putt championships that took place in Deerpark last weekend. Despite the obvious disappointment at Kerry’s performance the County Board would like to commend the players for their time and dedication over the summer alongside that of panellists Aidan O’Connor and Jason Cregan. The County Board paid a special tribute to the Deerpark club and all its ground staff for having the course in perfect condition for all the top players in the country. This weekend the Tralee pair of Tony Blake and Lisa O’Connor represent Kerry in the National Mixed Foursomes finals taking place in Lakeside in Templemore. Castleisland has been chosen as the venue for the Munster Matchplay Qualifiers for Sunday September 23rd. ON THE GREENS: GOLF: Castlsisland: In the Seniors John Slattery was the winner from Pat Walsh and Johnny Burrows. The Mixed Scramble went to Annette Galvin, Marie Gleeson, Tom Brennan and William O’Sullivan. Second was the team of Helena Kilbridge, Paul Geaney and Cyril Quigley. The results of the Patsy Sweeney Presidents Prize saw Owen Nolan taking the win from Tone Brosnan and Declan Raggett. TRALEE GOLF CLUB: In the Men’s 4Ball Round 4 the winners were Kieran Ruttledge and Colm Sheehy from Billy Morrissey and Dermot Walsh. Third was John Keane Junior and Ivan Parker. The results from the Club Finals Day saw the following being crowned 2018 Champions: Scratch Matchplay: Graham Spring, Club Singles: David Sheehy Club Fourball: Domo Lyne & Liam Hussey and Mixed Foursomes: David & Mary Fitzgerald. Sean O’Connor won the Par 3 Reentry competition from the back tees. The Ladies Singles went to Nuala Dawson from Mary Murphy and Sharon Cahill. The Fousomes was won by Brid Halloran and Catherine McCarthy from Monica O’Neill and Ber Collins. Congratulations and well done to Mary Fitzgerald and her son David who won the Commemoration Cup on Saturday.

KNOW YOUR RIGHTS: JOBSEEKER’S ALLOWANCE FOR YOUNGER JOBSEEKERS Question I am 23 years of age and I live with my partner (aged 25) who is currently unemployed and getting Jobseeker’s Allowance. I am now also looking for work. How much Jobseeker’s Allowance am I entitled to? Answer In general, people aged under 26 get a reduced rate of Jobseeker’s Allowance. As you are cohabiting, you have two payment options. Your partner could claim for you as a dependent adult on their Jobseeker’s Allowance claim. They would be paid their personal payment of €152.80 and €131.40 for you each week. This would give you a total household weekly payment of €284.20. Alternatively, if you claim Jobseeker’s Allowance in your own right, the maximum personal amount you are eligible for is €107.70 a week. Even though the rate paid is less, it might be more beneficial for you because, as a claimant in your own right, you may be eligible for a range of training and employment schemes to help you into employment. If you take up a place on a course of education or training or on an employment support scheme, you get a higher rate of payment. For example, all Back to Education Allowance (BTEA) participants aged under 26 who were getting a reduced age-related Jobseeker’s Allowance payment, get a maximum BTEA rate of €198 per week. You can find the full list of current Jobseeker’s Allowance rates online at citizensinformation.ie. TRALEE CITIZENS INFORMATION CENTRE
