LEGAL MATTERS CORNER MIRIAM MC GILLICUDDY ANSWERS YOUR LEGAL QUERIES Living Wills/Advanced Healthcare Directives Billy has heard of living wills but he is not sure what they are and is wondering whether he should arrange one. A Living Will is a type of Advanced HealthCare Directive. It is a direction as to future health care. It is particularly important as it operates when one is not capable of giving these instructions. E.g if one was in a coma or had developed Alzheimers disease. These now have legal authority under the new Assisted Decision-Making (Capacity) Legislation 2015. The Advanced Healthcare Directive is a written document by a person over 18 years of full legal capacity signed in the presence of two witnesses at least one of whom is not an immediate family member which sets out the person’s will and preferences concerning medical or healthcare treatment decisions. The person may appoint a designated healthcare representative to act on their behalf in relation to health care issues and decisions that may arise in the future at a time when he/she may not have the ability to make those decisions for him/herself. It promotes Autonomy and complements the advance care planning process. It can be classified as a statement regarding the person’s wishes and preferences in relation to future medical care. It will set out the extent and type of healthcare the person wishes to have when they may not be able to make a decision on the healthcare and treatment at the particular time. People usually make directives to limit treatments to prolong life e.g. resuscitation, peg feeding, life support machines. Some people make directives to state that they want all possible treatments to be used however such a directive may not operate as it is dependent on healthcare resources. This is the first time advanced health care has been included in legislation. If a medical issue arises it is standard practice to consult next of kin where the patient hasn’t got the capacity to make a decision. However the next of kin still have no legal right to make decisions on behalf of their nearest and dearest adults. Forms to do a living will are available on the website www.thinkahead.ie Lawquip: I don’t find health-related puns funny anymore since I started suffering from an irony deficiency.” If you have a legal query or need further information on any item addressed in this column please send in your query to mirs@gofree.indigo.ie Miriam McGillycuddy, Solicitor, Derryana, Ballyard, Tralee, County Kerry. Tralee to host series of fun events as part of European Mobility Week Tralee Municipal District of Kerry County Council will host a series of free, fun events next week as part of European Mobility Week which runs from 16 to 22 September. Kerry County Council is one of ten local authorities in Ireland to have registered to take part in the continent-wide initiative. Tralee MD in conjunction with the Tralee Bay Eco and Activity Park and many more organisations and clubs have come together to provide a varied array of activities for all the family to participate in. A series of walks, talks and cycles have been organised and they will lead up to the weekly parkruns which will take place on Saturday 21 and Sunday 22 September. There will be walks in Tralee Town Park, the Wetlands Centre, and events at Blennerville Windmill and Visitor Centre. Full details of the programme
of events are available online at www.kerrycoco.ie. European Mobility Week puts the spotlight on safe walking and cycling and the benefits it can have for our health, our environment, and our bank balance. Active transport modes such as walking and cycling are emission-free and help to keep our hearts and bodies healthy. Mayor of Tralee, Cllr Jim Finucane said: ‘Town and cities that promote walking and cycling over private vehicles have also been found to be more attractive, with less congestion and a higher quality of life. ‘In terms of individual health benefits, studies show that cyclists on average live two years longer than non-cyclists and take 15 percent fewer days off work through illness, while 25 minutes of brisk walking a day can add up to
seven years to your life. I wish to thank all the organisations and clubs that are assisting Tralee Municipal District in delivering a fantastic array of events.’ ‘There are lots of free events running throughout the week and I encourage everyone to take part,’ he said.

Budding Young Filmmakers urged to Bring Their Sustainable Energy Ideas to the Big Screen The Minister for Communications, Climate Action and Environment Richard Bruton T.D. is today encouraging students fromKerry primary and post primary schools to enter this year’s SEAI One Good Idea competition. Students will create a one-minute film and campaign to inspire people to save energy and reduce carbon emissions. This year, four regional finals will be held in OmniplexTralee cinema and Omniplex cinemas all around the country. Students will see their film on the big screen and present their campaign to a panel of judges. Regional winners from each event will then compete at the National
Final in Dublin. The competition encourages students, their families and communities to take individual and collective responsibility for tackling climate change. Students will learn important skills in communication, filmmaking and creating change at a community level. In the last decade, over one and a half million people in Ireland have been reached by the projects put together by 7,500 inspiring schoolchildren. Opening the competition, Minister Bruton said: “Young people have made their voices heard on the
urgent need to take action to secure a more sustainable future. Delivering on the ambitious policies set out in the Climate Action Plan will require changes from everyone. This competition is a great opportunity for students to get involved, learn about the actions that they and their communities can take and also how they can spread the word and encourage others to do the same. I urge all teachers and students to make a difference and join this great initiative.” Participating students have the chance to win prizes for themselves and their schools.
Awareness campaigns can cover energy use at home, at school, for transport, energy related purchases and renewable energy. For full details and to apply online please visit at www. seai.ie/onegoodidea.
Ballyrickard 'Tea-drinkers' get the job done! Ballyrickard Court Residents came out in force again this weekend for
the annual estate tidy up. Aided by the lovely weather residents cleared and tidied up all public areas with several different shifts of residents working long hours around their work schedules to complete the job. It was a fantastic effort and brilliant to see so many people involved. Thanks to everyone who contributed machines, equipment, petrol, all the refreshments and snacks and of course their time. The clean up weekend is always an opportunity to catch up with neighbours, welcome new residents, and generally have a bit of crack whilst contributing to community civic duty, health, and mental well being and giving all a lift facing into the winter. Congratulations on a job well done. Photo Caption: Some of the residents of Ballyrickard court on a welldeserved relay break from the annual estate tidy up. Kerry Businesswomen’s Network bring two amazing expats home to share their stories A crowd of over 90 engaged community members came together last week to celebrate the success of two homegrown Kerry Businesswomen. With the theme “Kerry Women Can.” the event was filled with representatives of local businesses, nonprofits, educational institutions, as well as artists, musicians and students from across the county. The event featured 2 speakers; US based Real Estate Icon Rosemary Heard and Fashion Blogger and Influencer Erika Fox. Rosemary, who has spent the past 35 years based in the US and held leadership roles in both the private (Fortunate 500) and non-profit sector, spoke about the importance of Emotional Intelligence in business and how Irish people can learn to harness this as a distinguishing skill when developing their careers. She talked about "leadership in the rear-view mirror." and the importance of surrounding yourself with a network of supportive women from similar areas of business at all stages of your career and how organisations like KBN are vital in facilitating those
connections. Erika Fox, a Glenbeigh native who is now based in New York City, has been listed as one of Ireland top 10 fashion Influencers and currently has over 140K Instagram followers, advised attendees about the power of consistency and storytelling when building your brand on social media, specifically Instagram. She also discussed the power of video content and the growing importance of You Tube as a vehicle to promote your business. It was an evening filled with inspiration, humour and passion. Dingle Gin generously sponsored the pre event cocktail reception with a selection of cocktails containing the World’s best gin! The evening was expertly MC’d by the talented Elaine Kinsella of Radio Kerry, this was her second event working with KBN, the first being in March of this year when she interviewed Pauline McGlynn at KBN’s International Women’s Day celebration. KBN Chairperson, Elin Sorensen, who heads up top Kerry creative studio GHQ Design, says “The Network’s aim is to help redress society’s
imbalance by ‘changing the conversation’. Our events workshops and masterclasses focus on celebrating and growing the achievement of women – socially, politically and culturally. KBN's next event is ‘After Hours Networking’ and will take place in Madden’s Tralee at 6:30 pm on the 26th of September https:// afterhourstralee.eventbrite.ie Here is some feedback from just a few of the attendees on the night : “Fantastic event…It was so inspirational. It was a pleasure
to attend! Niamh Dillon @niamhs_ adventure “Brilliant event! ‘Square Ball’: Tralee’s Square to Host Big Screen For The Big Match For the die-hard Kerry supporters who might not have a ticket for Saturday’s big game or who can’t make it to Dublin for the All-Ireland Senior Football Final replay, Tralee Municipal District is inviting supporters and fans to watch the match on a specially
commissioned big screen in The Square in the town centre. Pre-match entertainment organised by Tralee Chamber Alliance will get the excitement building from about 4.30pm ahead of the match throw-in at 6.00pm. Fans are urged to turn out in their green and
gold and show the county colours and enjoy the party atmosphere. Local councillor, Pa Daly, initially made the proposal to Tralee Municipal District. The Mayor of Tralee, Cllr Jim Finucane said the atmosphere in Tralee ahead of the replay has been wonderful. ‘The whole town is looking exceptionally well and is bedecked in green and gold. I want to pay tribute to the staff of the Municipal District as well as all the local businesses who have ensured the town is looking so well. ‘I hope people will come along to The Square on Saturday evening to enjoy the festivities and to cheer on the team and management as they do battle with Dublin in Croke Park’, said Cllr Finucane.

Beauty
HELLO BEAUTIFUL PEOPLE! I hope you’re all having an amazing week. Last week I attended my first KBN (Kerry Business Women’s Network) event in Killarney! The event was based around Irish Women who live and work abroad, the speakers were Erika Fox AKA @retroflame and Rosemary Heard, two incredibly inspiring women who have worked very hard in their respective industries.
interested in the world of business, whether she is working, owns her own business or has a passion for something that she would like to turn into a business. Membership is €7 per month or €80 for the year which gives you discounted tickets to every event. Otherwise they have non member pricing on their events.
The event was hosted by Elaine Kinsella who hosted a live Q&A with both Erika and Rosemary. It was a very engaging event, I met lots of interesting people and felt very inspired afterwards. Listening to both Erika and Rosemary’s stories was fascinating.
I really enjoyed my first KBN event and will definitely be attending more!
KBN is for any woman who is
Other than attending that event this week I have been quite busy, I’m in the middle of organising a Masterclass for Ladies 30+ who feel that they would like to refresh their makeup knowledge or learn a bit
about anti ageing when it comes to makeup and how to apply makeup to enhance their beauty and not enhance any fine lines that might be of concern. I have already got a huge interest on Facebook and I have created an email list, people on this list will be first to know about the upcoming class and will have first access to tickets (I like to keep my classes relatively small). To register your interest please email rebeccashorttmakeup@gmail.com As well as that, I’m working full time so that I can reinvest into my clients and business and I’m also taking makeup appointments at weekends and other select dates. For any appointment enquiries you can message me on Facebook ‘Rebecca Shortt Makeup’ or instagram @rebeccashortt makeup. Otherwise you can email rebeccashorttmakeup@gmail.com

HELLO MY STRONG FRIENDS
I hope you’re all having a great week!
A lot of people go on strange “carb cutting” diets when they want to lose weight or tone up this is why you shouldn’t. This week I'm going to be talking all about why low carb diets don't work. Trust me, I've tried them all and the only thing they do is destroy your metabolism. As a weight loss strategy, cutting carbs (while reducing the total number of calories) clearly works pretty well for some people. Because you’re cutting calories. Cutting out any food group you consume regularly will do this, not just carbs. When you cut carbs you initially drop water weight, not fat. So therefore if you cut carbs for 4 weeks for your holiday, you drop weight, mostly water weight. Then the second you start
eating carbs again your body will retain more water than before and you will look bloated for your entire holiday, who wants that? No one! Here’s the thing, though: Carb reduction costs us. You see, most of us require some level of carbohydrates to function at our best over the long term. Keeping carbs too low for too long can have disastrous consequences. This is especially true for those of us who work out. If you’re sedentary, your carb needs are lower. So you might be able to get away with more restriction. But if you like to exercise regularly and enthusiastically, restricting your carb intake can lead to: 1. Decreased thyroid output 2. Increased cortisol output 3. Decreased testosterone 4. Impaired mood and cognitive function 5. Muscle loss
Women with too-low carb intakes — especially active women — can face: a stopped or irregular menstrual cycle; lowered fertility; more body fat (especially around the middle); chronic fatigue and disrupted sleep; Everything should be in balance. I'm not saying to eat just carbs and only carbs every day, but I am saying that from experience, lots of women are afraid of carbs and think that they're bad. What you really need to look at is how much salt and sugar are in your foods. I have said it before and I will say it again… INVEST IN A GOOD PERSONAL TRAINER. It will honestly change your life, and your perception of carbs. For me personally, if I don’t eat enough carbohydrates I find that I get headaches.
In other words: Your metabolism might slow, your stress hormones go up and your muscle-building hormones go down.
Rebecca

HEALTHY RECIPES for 2019
You can't beat a good Shepherds Pie!
As the temperature drops, our diet for the change season tends to alter a little ... Here is a delicious dish to warm the cockles of the heart .Its great served up as the Autumn evenings get a little chilly.
CHICKEN AND MUSHROOM SHEPHERD'S PIE WITH PARSNIP MASH INGREDIENTS • 1/4 cup dried porcini mushrooms (1/4 ounce) • 1/2 cup boiling water • 1 1/2 pounds skinless, boneless chicken thighs, cut into 1-inch pieces • salt and freshly ground pepper • 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil • 6 tablespoons butter • 3/4 pound white mushrooms, quartered
• • • • • • • •
1 medium onion, cut into 1/4inch dice 2 medium carrots, cut into 1/2-inch dice 1 celery rib, cut into 1/4-inch dice 3 tablespoons plain flour 1 1/2 cups chicken stock 2 thyme sprigs 1 pound potatoes, peeled and cut into 1-inch dice 1 pound parsnips, peeled and cut into 1-inch dice
METHOD In a small heatproof bowl, cover the porcini with the boiling water and let stand until softened, about 20 minutes. Drain the porcini, straining and reserving the soaking liquid. Coarsely chop the porcini. Preheat the oven to 160. Season the chicken with salt and pepper. In a large, deep pan heat the olive oil until shimmering. Add the chicken and cook over moderately high heat, turning once, until browned, about 8 minutes. Transfer the chicken to a plate. In the same pan, melt 2 tablespoons of the butter. Add the white mushrooms and cook over moderately high heat until browned in spots, about 5 minutes. Add the onion, carrots and celery and cook over moderate heat until tender, about 5 minutes. Add the porcini and season with salt and pepper. Sprinkle in the flour and cook, stirring, for 2 minutes. Return the chicken and any juices to the pan. Stir in the chicken stock, thyme sprigs and the porcini soaking liquid and bring to a simmer over moderate heat, scraping up any bits from the bottom of the pan Simmer until the sauce has thickened and the chicken is cooked through, about 10 minutes. Spoon the chicken into a medium baking dish; discard the thyme sprigs. Meanwhile, in a large saucepan, cover the potatoes and parsnips with cold water and bring to a boil. Cook over moderately high heat until very tender, about 15 minutes. Drain and return the vegetables to the pot. Cook over low heat until they look dry, about 1 minute. Remove from the heat. Add the remaining 4 tablespoons of butter and mash the vegetables until smooth. Season with salt and pepper. Spoon the parsnip mash over the chicken and smooth the surface. Bake for 20 minutes, until the sauce is bubbly. Turn on the grill. Grill the shepherd's pie 4 inches from the heat for about 2 minutes, until browned in spots. Serve piping hot.

Suffer from COPD, Asthma, Bronchitis or Sinusitis? Salt Therapy may be the answer Available from As the summer ends and the Autumn / Winter looms bringing with it cold and inclement weather conditions, those who are prone to respiratory issues like chest infections, asthma attacks and bronchitis will be trying to ensure they stay infection free. A salt based air purifier called Salin® Plus may be the answer. Available for use in the home for over six years, many people have used Salin® Plus successfully to help manage their respiratory problems including Asthma, COPD, Bronchitis, Cystic Fibrosis, Sinusitis, Rhinitis (Hay Fever), Allergies, Snoring and Sleep Apnoea. What is the Salin® Plus Air Purifier? It is a small device about the size of a kettle that you plug it in each night and leave it on while you sleep. The following morning you wake up feeling refreshed.
How Salt Therapy works The benefits of Salt Therapy can be attributed to its antiinflammatory effects. Salin® Plus Air Purifier uses Microcrystalline salts that are fanned through the air to relieve breathing difficulties. Once inhaled, the micro-particles of salt penetrate deep into the lungs which can help unblock and remove any buildup of mucus and foreign allergens.
Works while you sleep This alternative treatment uses dry sodium chloride to help relieve respiratory problems, there are no masks or tubes involved. Just plug in the small Salin® Plus Air Purifier and leave it on while you sleep. The team at McCauley Health & Beauty Pharmacy said “We
have been offering the theSalin® Plus salt therapy for some years now and we find that it is very beneficial for those who suffer from breathing / respiratory problems. The feedback we have had is that Salin® Plus Air Purifier is a brilliant device for people of all ages”.
Replace the Salin® Plus Air Purifier Filter regularly
For best results it is recommend that you should change the filter of the Salin® Plus Air Purifier every 4-6 months or it will not work as intended, that is to clear the airways and release phlegm, resulting in the patient being able to breathe more easily and having a great night’s sleep.
Keep a note of the date you change the filter.
A great complement to medication The McCauley Health & Beauty Pharmacy profiled in this article recommend that you should that you should never go off
your medication without speaking to your pharmacist or doctor. However, they consider the Salin® Plus Air Purifier to be a great complement to medication
How Salin® Plus Air Purifier has helped these users Asthma and Allergies Lisa, mum of Charlie (pictured), explained how the Salin® Plus Air Purifier Salt Therapy helped her son’s Asthma and Allergies. She said “My 7 year old son suffers with Asthma and Allergies, as Charlie was 6 weeks premature his lungs were slightly compromised. I heard that the the Salin® Plus could help him so I purchased the little machine in May 2018. The difference this has made to Charlie’s health is fantastic. In the short time we have the Salin® Plus Air Purifier in his room we have not had to get even one prescription and no doctor visits! It’s fantastic and I would highly recommend it.”
Tonsillitis and Sinus Infections Michael’s mum, Laura said: “Since winter 2013 Michael (pictured) had suffered with Tonsillitis, Sinus Infections, and Chest Infections. In January 2017, we were recommended to try the Salin® Plus for Michael. He is now a far healthier child and is sleeping better. I can 100% say that the Salin® Plus Air Purifier has helped us and our little boy's life and I would recommend this product to other parents”.
COPD and Sinusitis Mary O’Hara said, “I have been suffering with COPD and shortness of breath for the last few years and heard that the Salin® Plus Air Purifier could help me. Since using the device I don’t suffer from the shortness of breath as much and my overall health is much better. I would highly recommend Salin® Plus Air Purifier for those with COPD”. Mark O’Hara said, “I have been using the Salin® Plus Air Purifier for approximately three months and have noticed an improvement with my Chronic Sinus Issues. The machine is easy to use and is quiet enough not to interfere with my sleep”.

IT’S ONLY A JOKE A POLICEMAN CATCHES A MAN WITH SOME WEED IN HIS POCKET
"You're going to jail for all that marijuana in your pocket!" the policeman stated. "But officer, this weed isn't mine. It keeps appearing in my pocket every time I flush it down the toilet." the man replied. "Oh, really? This I gotta see. If you can prove it, you're free to go!" the policeman challenged. The man takes all the marijuana out of his pocket and puts it in the toilet. He then pulls the handle and watches it go down the drain. Several minutes go by and nothing happens. "Why hasn't the weed appeared back in your pocket?" the policeman asked. "What weed?"
WIFE CRASHED THE CAR AGAIN TODAY. SHE TOLD THE POLICE THE MAN SHE COLLIDED WITH WAS ON HIS MOBILE PHONE AND DRINKING A CAN OF BEER. Police said he can do what he likes in his own living room.
TWO BLONDES IN A FOREST
In December, two blondes in a forest are looking for a Christmas tree. They go all around the forest for hours. Then one of them says: "I am very tired and I am fed up with the searching - let's take some tree without the decoration."
ASKED MY WIFE IF I COULD RUN MY FINGER THROUGH HER HAIR
She nodded and said she would like that. I started brushing across her top lip, And that's when the fight started....
MY DOCTOR TOLD ME I WAS OVERWEIGHT AND I SHOULD DO SOMETHING DAILY THAT GETS ME SLIGHTLY OUT OF BREATH. So I took up smoking.
MY WIFE IS LEAVING ME BECAUSE OF MY OBSESSION WITH WEARING A DIFFERENT T SHIRT EVERY HOUR. I said, “Wait, I can change.”

YOU CAN HAVE ANY CAR ...AS LONG AS ITS ELECTRIC ! (FRANKFURT MOTOR SHOW )
WE'RE getting to the stage where Henry Ford's slogan of 'any colour you want so long as it's black' is being repeated for electric cars.It is most definitely a case of 'any car you want so long as it is electrified'.This year's Frankfurt Show, which opened yesterday bereft of some big names, is mainly about electric cars. They range from Volkswagen's ID3 family hatch to the large, stunning EQS concept from Mercedes, to BMW's i Hydrogen Next that previews a future fuel-cell car.Nearly anything goes, so long as it's electric; flights of design and power-train fancy have assumed a hard-edged reality - instead of the fanciful fripperies of years back. The reality is that they are, in so many respects, our (electric) cars of the future. After all we are expected to be driving around one million EVs by 2030, aren't we?It is impossible from where I'm sitting here - opposite a mesmeric Mercedes concept - not to note the contrast with a few years ago as the Dieselgate scandal shredded the motoring blueprint we had known for so long. Now Volkswagen has re-invented itself and is charging into electric cars with the zeal of the convert. It and virtually every other carmaker has joined the frantic race to meet the new-mindset demand from consumers and regulators. An acute example of the electric conversion is how even the new Land Rover Defender, a historically hard-core symbol of fossil-fuel power, has electrified versions (mild and plug-in hybrids) as well as its diesels and petrols. It got an emotional welcome when unveiled here yesterday and despite the brush of modernity it is still claimed to be the best off-roader in the business; an icon reborn as a tough upmarket 4x4, if you like.It has configurable terrain response which lets even the likes of me optimise traction regardless of conditions. And they claim it is a lot more comfortable on the road. We'll see. Some of the structural elements inside are left exposed as part of retaining its rugged lineage and there is a central front jump seat. The Defender 110 version has five, six or 5+2 seating and there is the smaller Defender 90 which accommodates six.For most Irish buyers the choice will be from two 4cyl diesels - the D200 and D240.Back on track I continue my trawl; everywhere I look there are electric cars of some shape or form. Here's just a sample to give you an idea of how much of a swing there has been.Stunning-looking concepts from BMW preview the next-generation 4 Series, and i4, while the Hyundai 45 Concept shows that brand's design direction for future EVs. Porsche's new Taycan is being hailed as the car to set new EV benchmarks. One of the stand-out cars is the Mercedes 470bhp luxury EV Vision EQS electric flagship. I hope it makes it to production (2021) without major compromise. It is one of a massive display and array of EV and electrified cars coming from the German giant.KIA's plug-in version of its newly launched and already widely praised XCeed urban compact crossover was around. Watch out for this car. Again, it's one of several KIAs that will be 'electrified'.The electric Honda E is now a 5dr and uses cameras instead of door mirrors. There is a hole in the bonnet to let the charge point through. It's cute, somehow. Opel is showing its new electric Corsa. Nice little car that.Lamborghini's outrageous Sian 808bhp hypercar is a hybrid and makes its public debut here too. Cupra shows its Tavascan EV concept while Skoda promotes its Citigo-e iV… the list goes on.But thankfully there are some exceptions.Audi is showing its hot SQ8 new flagship SUV and the redesigned RS7 has a good old powerhouse V8 that pumps 591bhp.For all that, wasn't it fitting, given what's happened, that Volkswagen should steal the limelight again - by formally unveiling its new ID electric car the night before the show.As you probably know at this stage, there will be a sub-€40,000 limited launch version in the summer. But the lower-priced versions don't get here until late next year, making them January 2021 purchases. They will cost from under €30,000 after the €5,000 VRT rebate and €5,000 SEAI grant are deducted. There will be several IDs over the coming years believe me.The car is as compact as a Golf but really roomy inside (they claim nearly Passat capacity). That's my impression after sitting in .It is narrower in the cabin than you'd imagine but the space opens up lengthwise.Volkswagen is (surely?) sending a clear signal to rivals such as the Nissan LEAF with that sub €30,000 start.A larger ID 4 concept, a rival for the likes of the KIA eNiro, is said to have the US market in its sights. Yes, we've all come a long way since Dieselgate four years ago.But now the real work begins: making the cars on show become a reality - and making sure we can power them.I can't help wondering - and I'm sure you are the same - where we'll be in four years' time?(Eddie Cunningham Indo Motoring)
MINISTER ROSS WARNS RETAILERS THAT E SCOOTERS ARE ILLEGAL ON PUBLIC ROADS
The Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport, Mr. Shane Ross TD, has warned retailers and suppliers of e scooters and other Powered Personal Transporters (PPTs) that they should inform customers that such vehicles are not legal on public roads and thoroughfares. Minister Ross said retailers were obliged if selling e scooters or other PPTs, such as segways, hoverboards and other vehicles, to inform customers that they were only available to use legally on private property. Last week, Minister Ross announced that he was commencing a public consultation to run until November 1st on foot of receiving a report commissioned by the RSA which broadly supports legalising the use of such vehicles on public roads. The Minister has invited submissions from all interested parties. The consultation is also being brought directly to the attention of a range of stakeholders with a particular interest/responsibility for road safety. But Minister Ross today said that although a consultation period was underway, e scooters and PPTs remained illegal if used on public roads. Minister Ross said: “The use of these mechanically propelled vehicles is illegal on public roads/ in public places. Under section 3 of the Road Traffic Act 1961, eScooters and similar vehicles are defined as mechanically propelled vehicles. As such, before they can be used on public roads/in public places they must be covered by insurance, have motor tax and the driver appropriately licenced to operate them. Due to the nature of these vehicles, under existing road traffic law they are only suitable for use on private property.” Minister Ross said enforcement of the legislation is a matter for An Garda Síochána, with various penalties provided, along with powers for the detention of the vehicle when detected in use in contravention of the legislation. FAI NATIONAl P.R.O. OF THE YEAR CHANNEL NO REAL CHALLENGE TO ELAINE:
The fact that you can watch sports that are on live when writing columns like this is one of the nice parts of the job. However as I write this with the Listowel Races on in the background I am keeping an eye on something that one does not watch every day. Elaine Burrows Dillane is attempting to be the first Kerry woman to swim the English Channel. She is doing the swim to raise money for Brain Tumour Ireland. Elaine and her support crew headed to the UK last weekend but had to wait until Tuesday morning before there was a favourable weather window for the swim to take place. She set out early in the morning and after 7 hours she was half way to France in perfect weather conditions. Indeed she told her crew on the aptly named boat The Optimist after a feed, which is given to her in the water every half hour that she felt stronger than she had when she set out. They were doing a great job on Facebook with live feeds of Elaine while her crossing was also being tracked on the Channel Swimming and Piloting Federation. Elaine has put in a huge training effort and it was certainly paying off as she passed the mid -way point. The shortest distance across the channel is 21 miles but with the tide it is usually a longer distance. Just over 1730 people have completed what is known as the Everest of Swims since Matthew Webb did it for the first time in 1875. And for the swim to be officially recognised swimmers cannot wear a wet suit – just a swimming cap, goggles, a nose clip, ear plugs and their costume. The swim can only be undertaken during July and September. The other rule is that you cannot touch anyone during the swim or you have to pull out. The feeds I spoke about above are given to the swimmer on a long pole passed out from the support boat. By 7pm on Tuesday evening Elaine Friday 13th September 2019
could start thinking of being the creator of history as the first Kerry woman to swim across the channel could see land. Just over one hour later Elaine climbed out of the water and onto the beach in France to become the first Kerry woman to swim the English Channel. WILL SAM JOIN KATHLEEN IN THE KINGDOM FOR THE WINTER? Kerry have another All Ireland in the bag with the camogie girls capturing the Premier Junior title. They bounced back for their defeated 12 months ago to record a three point win over Limerick 0-11 to 0-08. The final was one of three on a record breaking day for the game with almost 25,000 in Croke Park for the three finals. Kerry got their first score in the 5th minute with a Brid Horan point and by the 21st minute were 4 points ahead but Limerick fought back trail by just one at the half 0-06 to 0-5. Kerry led by Patrice Diggin went three ahead mid-way through the second half and while Limerick threw everything at the girls the Kerry defence denied them the goal they needed to force their way back into the game, Camogie President Kathleen Woods presented the Kathleen Mills Cup to a delighted captain Niamh Leen. It was a great reward for the girls and the Kerry management for all the hard work they put in over the last few years and should give a huge boost to the continued growth of the game in the Kingdom. Patrice Diggin top scored for Kerry with 4 free and 1 from play while 6 other girls hit a point each – Brid Horan, Julianne O’Keeffe, Jackie Horgan, Rachel McCarthy, Sara Murphy and Clodagh Walsh. The successful Kerry team was Aoife Fitzgerald, Áine O’Connor, Liz Houlihan, Michelle Costello, Niamh Leen, Sara Murphy, Elaine Ryall, Patrice Diggin, Laura Collins, Jessica Fitzell, Jackie Horgan, Rachel McCarthy, Bríd Horan, Julianne O’Keeffe, Olivia Dineen while the starting subs were AnnMarie Leen for Jessica Fitzell (HT), Clodagh Walsh for Bríd Horan (HT), Alanna Maunsell for Julianne O’Keeffe (48). SO CAN SAM FOLLOW? Things have been very low key from both the Dublin and Kerry camps since the drawn game. With
the Press and public nights held before the first game this means that both management teams can concentrate on their plans for Saturday evening. Both sides will have done lots of video analysis and reviewing of the stats but we all know that replay’s take on a life of their own. Despite coming with a score of stopping the Drive for 5 Kerry will again be the underdogs for the game. But that certainly won’t bother them. The big questions as which team will take the most from the final? Kerry, although they always believed, now know that Dublin are not invincible and are an ageing side. The other thing is that the Dublin bench was not the influence that it was in previous years. Dublin will come out of the blocks and look to blow Kerry away in the early stages but if Kerry can stay with them and get their running game going they will have a great chance. Once again the match ups will be vital and the first thing that everyone will be looking for it to see if there are changes to the match day 26. For example will James O’Donoghue feature for Kerry and will Bernard Brogan get back in for Dublin. There are reports of unrest when he was not included and Diarmuid Connelly was. Then the focus will be on some of the ‘big’ players who had a quiet day in the first game by their own standards. Can they have a big influence on the game? Obviously the modern day trend of the kick-outs being a vital part of the game as against the days not that long ago when all the keeper did was put the ball down and drive it as hard and far as he could. Not it is much more technical and Kerry probably did shade it the last day as they did not allow Dublin to benefit to any great degree from Stephen Cluxton’s kick outs. In the Kerry goal despite one or two scares Shane Ryan did well. If Kerry can stop Dublin getting goals and take the chances they create they will have a huge chance and hopefully this time around if they are in the game in the final quarter they will push on against a team that has been the benchmark for the last number of years but who might just be gone over the top of the hill. We will know all by Saturday night. TRALEE’S BIG SCREEN THE PLACE TO BE IF YOU DON’T HAVE A TICKET: For the diehard Kerry supporters who might not have a ticket for Saturday’s big game or who can’t make it to Dublin for the All-Ireland Senior Football Final replay, Tralee Municipal District is inviting supporters and fans to watch the match on a specially commissioned big screen in The Square in the town centre. Pre-match entertainment organised by Tralee Chamber Alliance will get the excitement building from about 4.30pm ahead of the match throwin at 6.00pm. Fans are urged to

turn out in their green and gold and show the county colours and enjoy the party atmosphere. I hope people will come along to The Square on Saturday evening to enjoy the festivities and to cheer on the team and management as they do battle with Dublin in Croke Park’, said Cllr Finnucane. Tralee Municipal District has arranged plenty of county colours throughout the town centre and thanked electrician, Seán Murphy, for his support in that regard. TWO KERRY MINORS MAKE TEAM OF THE YEAR While Kerry’s long unbeaten run in the Minor championship came to an end this year they have ended the season on a high with two members being named on the 2019 Electric Ireland Team of the Year. Devon Burns from Na Gaeil is the goal keeper with Dingle’s Denis Geaney getting the number 15 jersey. The minor football and hurling teams will be presented with their awards at the third annual ceremony that will take place in Croke Park on Saturday September 28th. LEE STRAND TOURNAMENT A GREAT SUCCESS: The u13 Dinny O’Connor Lee Strand Football Tournament is now a well- established event on the underage calendar. After the days play Na Gaeil won the Abie Allen Plate defeating Na Piarsaigh from Cork with Sean Barrett being presented with the trophy and Liam Cooper getting the Player of the Match Award. Oranmore/Maree from Galway won the Billy Breen Shield while in the main final Clontarf just got the better of the Stacks boys. It was a very good day for the Dublin side with captain Luke O’Boyle picking up the trophy, Senan Ryan getting the Player of the Match award and their teammate Joe Sheppard being named as the Player of the Tournament and taking home the James Hobbert Memorial trophy after another great tournament that those involved in organising it can take great credit for all their hard work. AUSTIN STACKS NEWS: The Academy is on a break this weekend but it is not only due to the All-Ireland relay. The u9’s are in Cork for the St Finbarr’s Club Tournament with the Canty

The Academy had another great turn-out with some new players after joining. The boys and girls are really improving and are now playing 6-a-side games. The club will be delighted to welcome new boys and girls on any Sunday. In the under 8 academy AJ Turner was named as the Player of the Week after a very tough task for the coaches. The Academy continues this Sunday morning from 10.30am. The u8’s and 10’s are another group who are enjoying their sessions and there were a number in line for the Team of the Week prize with Niamh Murphy. The u10’s were also training hard and are putting in some great work at home. In the Juvenile the u14 Girls lost the Shield Final to Abbeydorney. Despite being down on numbers the girls put up a great fight. They will now play Listowel Emmets B in the Plate final at home next Wednesday. There is no date yet for the Round 11 game in the Senior County Championship which was postponed due to the unavailability of some of the Inter County players. St Brendan’s will play East Kerry in the 1st Round of the County Championship in Austin Stack Park on Sunday 22nd of September at 1.30pm. KERINS O’RAHILLYS NEWS: The u10 girls will take part in the Carmel O’Connor Annual Memorial Blitz in Na Gaeil on Saturday September21st. The u12’sd were at home to Mitchels in mid-week while the u14 girls went down to Ballymac in the North Kerry League 3-16 to 3-09. Their next game is against Austin Stacks. The u16 Girls took on Castlegregory in Ballyrickard in the North Kerry League and were full of confidence after winning the u15 County Championship. The visitors got an early goal to lead 1-05 to 0-03 and kept the lead to the break and were 4 points up 1-10 to 2-03. The Tralee girls fought right to the end but on the night it was Castlegregory who finished the

stronger to record a 4-14 to 3-05 win. The girls are away to Finuge/ St Senans on the 20th and many of them will also be playing in the u17 championship which will be starting soon. The Senior Ladies continue to train on Tuesday and Thursday night and are awaiting match details for the game away to Clounmacon. The u12 boys ended their season on a high winning the Central Region Division 4. They needed to beat Keel in the last game and a strong first half saw the Tralee boys lead 3-11 to 2-03. They were never going to let the lead slip from there and in the end took the win and the League on a 5-20 to 3-06 score line. It was a night to remember for Nick Lacey as he was the captain of the winning side and also named Man of the Match. BALLYMAC NEWS: The Seniors game versus Dromid Pearses has been rescheduled due to the All Ireland replay. The club needs to put up nets behind the goals for Health and Safety reason and with the cost of preparing the area and trimming the trees the bill will be over e9,500 so any contribution will be greatly appreciated. The Wexford-Laois combination held runner up position for most of Saturday’s nine stage run, before taking the overnight lead on the day’s final test, four seconds ahead of early leaders Andrew Purcell and Liam Brennan. Purcell’s Fiesta briefly went ahead again on Sunday’s opener, but was forced to retire immediately afterwards, leaving Stafford and Case in command as they pulled away from the opposition. Third place went to the Escort of Wesley Patterson and Johnny Baird, with local pairing Thomas O’Rourke/ Tomas Scallan fourth in a Hyundai i20.
