Contracts Signed For 27 New Homes At Island Of Geese
Construction work is due to commence shortly on a new housing development at the Island of Geese in Tralee.
Contracts were signed this week for the 27-unit scheme which is located within the former Denny factory site at the Island of Geese in the town centre.
The development, named Tearmann na nGéanna, is located on Matt Talbot Road, and will consist of 22 one-bedroom apartments and five two-bedroom apartments.
Kerry County Council have
employed the technical advisory services of Van Dijk Architects for design development and Ned O’Shea & Sons Construction Ltd was recently awarded the construction contract.
The new scheme received Part 8 planning approval in 2022.
Cathaoirleach of Kerry County Council, Cllr Breandán Fitzgerald welcomed the signing of contracts this week, adding that the new units would provide high-standard accommodation for many individuals and families in need of housing.

LEGAL MATTERS CORNER
MIRIAM MC GILLICUDDY ANSWERS YOUR LEGAL QUERIES
Nonie has developed vascular dementia and is no longer able to manage her affairs or look after herself in any way shape or form. Her niece Rachel is wondering what she can do to ensure Nonie is properly looked after until her death.
While John Donne might have said “no man is an island” the fact is that the State must recognize the independence and right to selfdetermination of everyone within the state. As a result, if a person develops a mental capacity issue later in life their next of kin can apply to manage their affairs but there are safeguards in place which prevent the next of kin having total unfettered control. For Rachel to become a decision-making representative for Nonie she will have to apply to court initially for consent to bring a decision-making application as she may not be one of the people automatically entitled to bring the application. Usually, spouse and children for example would be automatically entitled. Then once she gets that consent from the court, she can apply setting out what orders she requires and how she is going to manage the decision-making representation. She will explain Nonie’s medical situation, how she is getting on at present, what other relatives or interested individuals are involved in her care or are close to her. She will set out a plan about how she is going to manage Nonie’s affairs and what Nonie’s wishes are. Nonie then perhaps with help from Rachel would apply for separate legal
St Michaels Basketball Club in Lixnaw is up and running!

representation for which she would probably get legal aid. A legal aid solicitor would then be appointed who would meet with her and ascertain her wishes, if possible, to the application and the orders sought. The court will then at the hearing investigate the matter, look at the relevant proofs particularly the medical evidence, they may wish to hear Nonie either directly or through video link if that was applicable and they would then decide as to whether to appoint Rachel as Decision making representative to Nonie. This whole procedure can take some time as it involves getting at least two court dates and as a result it is important to do it sooner rather than later when a person has advanced Alzheimer’s or dementia. Rachel once appointed will have to do annual reports to the decision support service in relation to her management of Nonie’s affairs as her decision-making representative.
The whole system therefore is geared to ascertain Nonie’s wishes in so far as they are ascertainable and is respectful of her will and preference. If a court feels that Nonie has some capacity and could manage her affairs with a co-decision maker or assisted decision maker, they are more likely to go these other routes which involve less severe decision-making assistance and allow Nonie more autonomy, consultation and input into the management of her affairs.

Aquadome EGM happening in November
An Emergency General Meeting (EGM) of the Aquadome’s shareholders is scheduled for November. Tralee Waterworld PLC, which has owned and operated the facility since its 1994 opening, believes the PLC structure is no longer suitable. Built at a cost of €5.6 million, the Aquadome was established for the benefit of Tralee’s residents and visitors.
At the EGM, shareholders will vote on transferring assets and business from the PLC to the newly created Tralee Aquadome CLG (company limited by guarantee). This change would allow the Aquadome to apply for grants and financial supports not available to publicly owned companies. The meeting will be held at the Manor West Hotel in Tralee at 7 p.m. on Thursday, November 7th.

As they prepare for their first home game on Saturday against longtime rivals Templeogue, the launch introduced the squad, featuring new McKeever Sports gear and three professional signings: 6’3’’ point guard Marquavian Stephens, 6’5’’ guard Brandon Mahan, and 6’8’’ center Gregorio Adon. In the season opener, Adon scored 23 points, Stephens added 21, and Mahan contributed 18 points.

BUDGET
2025
Electorate Bonanza
Overview
Minister Jack Chambers was in the enviable position of having a pre-election budget with substantial surpluses in the public finances and good economic growth in advance of a general election due to be announced shortly. He was quick to highlight that “his government, through successive budgets, has supported the individuals, families and businesses who have played an integral part in ensuring our economy is in such a strong position today” There is no doubt the Budget will benefit most individuals but there appears to be very little to get excited about from a Kerry business perspective. No major change to supports to the retail, hospitality or SME sector, and a farming sector which was largely ignored. The increased minimum wage while understandable, will be a major burden for these SME businesses to carry.

Business Reaction
‘To see a future for farming in rural Ireland, we share this modest ambition with the other farming organisations, itʼs a pity that such a sentiment is not present in the halls of Leinster Houseʼ
- Elaine Houlihan Macra President
“While todayʼs budget announcement featured several positive changes to the business tax landscape including an expansion of the R&D tax credit and extensions to certain investor reliefs, measures of this nature, although welcome, will arguably do little to mitigate the everyday overheads facing many small businesses”
- Cróna Clohisey Chartered Accountants Ireland
“Of course the tax credit is welcome as it will put money back in studentsʼ pockets but in terms of long-term measures to fix the accommodation crisis, it doesnʼt go far enough.”
- Katie Halpin-Hill Student Union President

Kerry’s Junior Cycle exam candidates achieve superb results
By Billy Ryle
Junior Cycle exam results were released on Wednesday by the State Examinations Commission (SEC) to 72,828 candidates nationwide, including 2,186 from Kerry. The results in Kerry were outstanding, maintaining the high standard seen last year. This year’s figure of 72,828 candidates marks a 3% increase from last year’s 70,727, highlighting both population growth and improved retention rates in postprimary education. Last year was the first time the Junior Cycle, or its predecessors the Junior Cert and Intermediate Cert, exceeded 70,000 candidates. This reflects a growing number of students in this age group and more students remaining in school longer. Notably, this year’s results were
released nine days earlier than in 2023, thanks to an increase in available markers and the move to online marking in most subjects.
Minister Norma Foley and the SEC were praised for the earlier release, which allows students to receive timely feedback on their performance.
The reformed Junior Cycle program is seen as a significant improvement over the old Junior Cert, making it more relevant to today’s student needs. Coupled with ongoing reforms at the Leaving Cert level, Ireland’s post-primary education system is considered to be among the best in the world.
Although the Junior Cycle is often overshadowed by the Leaving Cert, it remains an important milestone.

As a prestigious exam administered by the SEC, it provides students with their first experience of a public exam and plays a key role in preventing early school dropouts. The Junior Cycle helps to reduce inequality in education, ensuring more students stay engaged in learning.
As students prepare for Senior Cycle, it’s important to carefully consider subject choices and future career

LIFE IS SHORT, SO ENJOY IT!
The day barely starts, and suddenly it’s evening. Monday turns into Friday, and before we know it, the year is almost over. Time flies, and we lose loved ones—parents, friends—until we realize it’s too late to turn back. So, let’s make the most of the time we have left. Find joy in the things we love, add color to our grey days, and appreciate the small moments that fill our hearts with love. Let’s stop putting things off. Waiting for “later” means missing the best moments—family time, friendships, experiences. “Later” isn’t guaranteed. Life moves fast: priorities shift, health fades, kids grow, parents age, promises are forgotten. One day, it’s too late to do what we should have done or said. The time is now. The day is today. Life is a short trip—so live it fully while you can, because there’s no turning back.
