The More you tell the more you sell!!!

LEGAL MATTERS CORNER MIRIAM MC GILLICUDDY ANSWERS YOUR LEGAL QUERIES Part-time worker rights. Noeleen is attending college and working part-time at her local supermarket. She is wondering what her legal entitlements are in relation to pay, breaks, rest periods and holidays. She is 19 years of age. Noeleen is entitled to the minimum wage which is presently paid dependent on age and experience as set out in the table below. Age Amount % of NMW Under 18 €6.86 70% 18 years old €7.84 80% 19 years old €8.82 90% National Minimum Wage (20+) €9.80 100% It appears that the minimum wage will break the magic €10 per hour going to €10.10 per hour at its maximum next year. Noeleen is entitled to holiday pay at 8% of time worked. She has a right to a pay slip with legal deductions noted thereon. Any additional deductions above the statutory deductions should be by agreement with the employee. Noeleen should receive her basic terms and conditions of employment. In addition as of 4 March 2019, an employer must also notify each new employee, in writing, within five days of commencement of employment, of the following core terms of employment: 1. the full names of the employer and the employee; 2. the address of the employer; 3. the expected duration of the contract, in the case of a temporary

4. 5.

contract, or the end date if the contract is a fixed-term contract; the rate or method of calculation of the employee’s pay; the number of hours the employer reasonably expects the employee to work per normal working day and per normal working week.

Existing employees like Noeleen may also make a written request to an employer for a "Day 5" statement. Upon receipt of a written request, an employer must issue a "Day 5" statement within 2 months of the date of the request. Noeleen may be entitled to the premium payment for Sunday working The premium can be in the form of: • An allowance • Increased rate of pay • Paid time off • Combination of the above. Noeleen should be entitled to some pay for bank holidays also if she has worked 40 hours in the previous 5 weeks. In relation to breaks it is 15 minutes unpaid for each 41/2 hours worked and a half an hour after 6 hours which can include the previous 15 minutes. She is entitled to 11 hours daily rest break in each 24 hour period. Although Noeleen is a part time worker the law says that a part-time employee cannot be treated less favourably than a comparable full time employee in respect of any condition of employment.

Youth Drama Workshop Taster Session In Siamsa Siamsa Tíre, The National Folk Theatre of Ireland, invites young people aged 15 - 20 to get dramatic as it launches its eleventh season of the Free Radicals Youth Theatre (FRYT). A Taster Session will take place on Saturday 28th September from 4 - 6pm and new members are welcome with the term commencing Saturday 8th October at Siamsa Tíre. The group meets every Saturday 4-7pm at Siamsa Tíre throughout the school term time up to April 2019. The FRYT has successfully created a safe space for young people to explore their world using the medium of drama and plans to produce a performance at the end of each term, with the December production sponsored by Creative Ireland in association with Kerry County Council. Established in 2008, the Free Radicals Youth Theatre provides workshops allowing members to devise and create their own drama and develop a wide range of performance skills. This enables members to gain confidence, develop team working skills and perform work in a professional atmosphere. It also gives

them an opportunity to explore their own identity through the expressive and performing arts and socialise creatively. Siamsa Tíre welcomes back award winning Kerry playwright Neil Flynn and Kerry actor Gerry Fitzgerald as facilitators of the FRYT again this year. The programme will also include guest speakers/ workshop facilitators. This

energetic team work tirelessly to inspire the group each year as they help them produce and perform collaborative works. This year the Free Radicals Youth Theatre will return to the stage in late December with a developmental performance of exciting new work. "We are delighted that the Free Radicals Youth Theatre has been such a great

success and continues to grow year on year. It provides a wonderful growth platform for the individuals involved both personally, in developing their talents and skills, but it can also provide a stepping-stone for future careers in the arts," comments Róisín McGarr, Executive Director, Siamsa Tíre.

Born to Run event benefits local school Members from Tralee Born to Run Marathon Club paid a visit this week to St Ita's and St Joseph's Special School for children with mild to general learning disabilities in Balloonagh, Tralee. A cheque for €2,229 was presented by the club to the school at assembly on Monday morning last to applause from students, teachers and staff. The money was raised from the club's sell-out 40 mile ultra marathon and relay race held in July. School principal Grace Sheehan welcomed the donation and thanked Born to Run for its support. The money will go towards completing the school's vocational centre which was set up to equip students with the skills to find employment after their school

career comes to an end. "We want to provide our students with vocational training where they can go on and be living, active citizens in the community, and this is a key part of our mission statement," Grace said. "We are delighted to receive this donation from Tralee Born to Run." Aoife O'Connor from Born to Run said: "St Ita's and St Joseph's have been chosen as our beneficiary for the second year in a row. "The 40 mile ultra marathon and relay event was not only set up as a running event but also to raise funds for charity. "It is a great opportunity for Born to Run to be active members of the community and support such a worthy cause," she said.

Anam Cara Kerry Supporting Parents After The Death Of A Child Anam Cara Kerry, will be hosting a Parent Support Evening on Tuesday 8th October from 7:20pm in the Recovery Haven, 5 Haigs Terrace, Killerisk, Tralee. When the dust has settled from the summer holidays and the back to school rush is over, many bereaved parents find that the reality hits home again. Their child is gone forever. Anam Cara parent support evenings will provide a safe and comfortable space for all bereaved parents to come and remember their child and to listen to other parents speak

of their loss and how they are managing on their journey. This event is open to all bereaved parents regardless the age of your child or circumstances of their death. Here you can come connect with other bereaved parents over a cup of tea or coffee and just sit and listen or if you chose, speak of your child. One bereaved Dad recently commented that.... “It's made me realise I am not going crazy, and there is a whole group of ordinary people like me who feel the very same after losing a child.

It's great to feel supported and have someone to talk to who understands” Anam Cara CEO Sharon Vard stressed that this event is open to all bereaved parents “regardless of the age your child died, the circumstances of their death or whether the death was recent or not. Anam Cara gives bereaved mothers and fathers a chance to meet and connect with other bereaved parents in a safe and comfortable setting. Here we can find a level of support and understanding that – even

with the best will in the world – it can be difficult for family and friends to offer.”On their website, anamcara.ie, you can access information about other events in your area, and Anam Cara resources. These include the Anam Cara Information Pack (eight leaflets) developed by bereaved parents and the Anam Cara Videos on A Dad’s Grief, Sudden and Traumatic Death, and The Grieving Family. All Anam Cara events are provided free of charge for as long as necessary

Free Events Will Celebrate Kerry’s Architectural Heritage This Weekend Kerry’s architectural heritage and the county’s architectural landscape will be celebrated during the second annual Architecture Kerry Festival at the end of this month. A wide range of free events including talks, free guided tours, exhibitions, workshops and family events will take place from 27 to 29 September. The aim of the festival, which is part of the Creative Ireland Kerry Programme, is to highlight the wide diversity of the architectural landscape in Kerry and to make some of the best-known sites of architectural significance in the county accessible to all ages.

Dozens of public and private buildings across the county will open their doors for free guided tours, Kerry County Library will host exhibitions and facilitate workshops for children and Kerry County Museum is hosting a ‘Teen Takeover’ where students from secondary schools across Kerry will run the museum.

Their ideas, insights and stories will become part of the museum’s narrative. Kerry County Council’s Architectural Conservation Officer, Victoria McCarthy, said the programme of events has something for everyone, even those with a passing interest in architecture: ‘Following the success of the event last year, we decided to arrange a series of events again this year to promote and highlight some of our unique

and attractive architectural heritage in the county. ‘Throughout Saturday 28 and Sunday 29 September, thirty different buildings and sites, more than double the number last year, will be opening their doors for free guided tours. Bookings should be made with each venue as numbers are limited in many cases,’ she said. Among the buildings opening up to the public will be the

Ballybunion Slate House (RTÉ Home of the Year finalist), the ARK Building at Astellas, Kerry lighthouses, “Behindthe-Scenes” at Siamsa Tíre and the government offices in Killarney. The full programme of events is available on the Kerry County Council website or via www.kerrycoco.ie/AK2019 and will be available in council offices and libraries around the county

Beauty

HELLO BEAUTIFUL PEOPLE! I hope you’re having an amazing week!

This week I’m talking all things makeup tools! When I started doing my own makeup I literally used my fingers to apply foundation and eyeshadow for a good while, I couldn’t even imagine doing that now. Insane. When it comes to a perfect makeup application you need three things, 1. a good base 2. good tools 3. good products. Today I’m going to talk all about my favourite makeup tools and brands that I recommend. The brushes/tools that I mention are my 100% ride or die ones, ones that I ALWAYS use and completely recommend.

THE BEAUTY BLENDER –

Blank Canvas F08–

If you haven’t applied your makeup with a beauty blender, you are seriously missing out. SERIOUSLY. And I’m not talking about the brands that made dupes of the beauty blender, I’m talking about The Original Beauty Blender! It gives your makeup an amazing flawless finish, it can be used for foundation, concealer, cream contour, or even to blend powder bronzer. Makeup By Mario also used Beauty blenders throughout his entire Masterclass, he swears by them! All you have to do is squeeze it in water to dampen it and then bounce it on your face to apply whichever product. You can get it on BeautyBay for €20 with free delivery.

EcoTools Angled Face Brush –

I use this, and only this, for my bronzer absolutely errrrryday, or every time I wear makeup at least. I don’t have many EcoTools brushes, but I must get more because they are such great quality. Like I’ve had that bronzer brush at least 2 years now and it’s still perfect. EcoTools is also Vegan friendly, which is awesome.

Anastasia Beverly Hills Duo Sided Brow Brush –

You all know that ABH is my brow brand, I use nothing else on them. The spoolie/ brush side is used to comb through the brows and the angled side is the perfect size to apply product with precision. You can get one on BeautyBay for €17.40.

So those are my absolute favourite brushes/tools. I have multiples of all of them and simply couldn’t do my makeup without them. As for brands, if you go for EcoTools, Blank Canvas Cosmetics, Morphe or Real Techniques you’ll be safe. You don’t have to get the most expensive brushes out there for them to be good, all of the brands and brushes I mentioned are mostly under €20. Also, it is VERY VERY VERY important to take care of your brushes and clean them REGULARLY!!!! Especially foundation brushes, you wouldn’t even believe the bacteria they collect. To clean them just use luke warm(not hot) water and any form of shampoo, baby shampoo is good, I recommend a scented version so your brushes smell fab. If you use hot water it will melt the glue on your brush and the hairs will fall out.

Friday 27th September 2019

Again, it is used to apply foundation to the face, it is very dense which means it gives great coverage and also doesn’t store lots of product. So if you’re a bit apprehensive about the beauty blender and are looking for an amazing foundation brush, this is for you! I actually have like 7 of them, some for my own personal use and one for my makeup kit for clients.

Blank Canvas E20 Blending Brush – I’m an OG Blank Canvas Cosmetics fan, I have been talking about and using their products since the beginning. Literally. I absolutely love this brush for blending, it’s insaaaaaaane.

WEIGHT TRAINING

Hello my strong friends, this week I’m talking all about weight training and how it can help you achieve your goals! muscle tissues are torn apart (at the microscopic level) from the stress, and it’s in the recovery period that your muscles become stronger and, therefore, able to support the extra stress. Usually the recovery period required is 24 to 48 hours after a weight training session so it’s good to train different muscle groups on different days. My current training split looks a bit like this… In general, people will practice cardio(running, cycling etc) and forget about weight training when it comes to burning fat. And there are still many trainers who will say that aerobic exercises burn off fat and weight lifting is only used to build muscle bulk. This statement is not correct because the more muscle mass one acquires through weight-bearing exercises, the more they will burn fat calories — even at rest. Cardio combined with weight training will result in effective fat loss. Cardio exercises will raise muscle metabolism during the activity and for a short time after the exercise session. Weight training, on the other hand, will raise your muscle metabolism during the exercise session — and for a long time after the exercise session. Some high intensity trainers have even seen their metabolism rise for several days following their training session. Whether your goal is to tone or build muscles, it is important to know what happens during the muscle training process. When lifting weights,

DAY 1 – LEGS DAY 2 – UPPER BODY DAY 3 – LEGS DAY 4 – UPPER BODY DAY 5 – LEGS DAY 6 - HIIT DAY 7 - ACTIVE REST DAY It is so so SO important to fuel your body efficiently when weight training. You need to give yourself the correct food especially carbs and protein, so that your muscles recover and you have energy to fuel your sessions. If you are in any way confused about nutrition and what you should be eating, get in touch with a good well informed personal trainer. I highly recommend Recalibrated Bodies, they strive to inform all their clients on why they’re eating what they’re eating and don’t cut out ‘bad’ foods. If you go to a personal trainer who tells you to basically eat plain chicken, broccoli and rice or something to that effect… RUN!!! A good PT won’t cut out food groups or drastically cut carbs, trust me. Anybody who debates the fact that

weight-bearing exercises don’t help people lose weight and fat should lift weights for one hour and see their heart rate go through the roof. I definitely sweat a lot more when I do a good weights session. An important factor to consider when trying to lose weight is that lots of muscle mass can be lost as a result. As muscle mass will keep your metabolism high, try to avoid quick weight loss through miracle diets or starvation. This weight loss will be regained just as quickly. Instead go for a gradual fat loss routine by combining weight training and cardio, and allow muscle mass to build up and increase your metabolism. Results may take a little longer, but they will last for a longer period of time. If you do a quick fix weightloss ‘diet’ then you won’t get the results you actually want. Just don’t focus on how long it will take to get to your goals, just focus on yourself day by day and the changes will come, I promise.

HEALTHY RECIPES for 2019

Lets celebrate the Vegetable! This is a bit of a cheat this week, taken from my first ever book, Vegetiopa a celebration of the vegetable released last July, some copies still available at Croí but a limited amount, glad to say!

POTATO, BEET & APPLE TIAN INGREDIENTS • 1 pound mooncoin beetroots, trimmed • 1 cup sliced leeks • 2 cloves garlic, minced • 4 tablespoons olive oil, divided • 1 pound ballymakenny farm yukon gold potatoes, peeled • 1 pound apple, peeled • 1 teaspoon chopped fresh thyme

• • • • •

1/2 teaspoon chopped fresh rosemary 1 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon pepper 1/3 cup dingle farmhouse goat cheese 1/3 cup chopped toasted walnuts

METHOD Preheat oven to 160°. Wrap beets individually in foil. Place each foil-wrapped beet on a baking sheet and roast for 1 hour 20 minutes or until softened. Allow to cool completely. Cook leeks and garlic in 1 tablespoon olive oil in a skillet over medium-high heat for 3-5 minutes or until leeks are softened. Slice potatoes, apples, and beets thinly to 1/4-inch thickness with a mandoline or knife. Toss potatoes and apples carefully in a medium bowl with 2 tablespoons olive oil. Toss beets carefully in another bowl with 1 tablespoon olive oil. Increase oven heat to 180°. Spread leek mixture evenly over the bottom of a 8-inch cake pan. Stack potato, apple, and beet slices in individual stacks.Place in pan on top of leeks, splaying out fan-like, one stack after the next to fit. Sprinkle with thyme, rosemary, salt, and pepper. MAZDA'S FIRST ELECTRIC CAR AT TOKYO MOTOR SHOW

Mazda's first electric vehicle will be revealed at the Tokyo Motor Show next month, according to reports. The carmaker has separately confirmed that the vehicle will be a totally new model powered by battery as opposed to being an electric version of a current auto. There is speculation it will be either a small crossover or hatchback. The company has also previously spoken about using rotary engines as range-extenders for plug-in-hybrids. * TESLA boss Elon Musk has promised that his company will soon be able to make an electric car battery capable of covering more than a million miles over its life. That's twice current mileage expectations.New research by a group of battery experts at Dalhousie University (which, it should be noted, has an exclusive agreement with Tesla) agrees. It says a lithium-ion battery should be able to do so while losing under 10pc of its energy capacity during its lifetime. Jeff Dahn, a leading lithium-ion researcher, says the group proved its battery significantly outperformed anything similar. * I'M PROMPTED to highlight little checks you can do yourself this week on the basis of sighting some cars badly in need of attention. The number with dodgy headlights is quite startling. Some vehicles look like no one has bothered to check on them for a long time.Either way, it is a good time of year to take a look to ensure there's no late school-run hiccups. So think of the old acronym POWDERY as a way of running the rule over your car: P = Petrol (fuel generally). Lots of people get stranded or stretch to the last drop. Bad for your car. Check and fill. O = Oil. For older-vehicle owners, especially, check the level regularly. W = Water. Normally your car will alert you if running low on coolant, but you shouldn't let it get this low. Check windscreen washer levels too. D = Damage. Check tyres and bodywork for visible damage. E = Electrics. Check all the lights, horn and windscreen washers. R = Rubber. Check your tyres (yes again) - your only points of contact with the road. Y = You. Are you fit to drive? Medication and tiredness can affect your driving, so concentration may not be 100pc if you're ill or stressed. All this seems so obvious that we risk overlooking it. * BEST wishes to Blackstone Motors, the Renault north-east regional dealer. It has opened its third Renault and Dacia dealership with the launch of Blackstone Dundalk. The group has invested €10m across the three operations. The new dealership brings employee numbers to 55. The expansion is creating 15 jobs initially, but there are plans for at least 35 posts over the next 18 months. (Indo Motoring , Eddie Cunningham )

HONEST JOHN COULD YOU PLEASE DEFINE WHAT A SURVIVOR CLASSIC CAR IS? Could you please define what a survivor classic car is? H.J. says As far as I know, it's a term used mainly by American auctions to describe a car. The term sits between 'original' and 'modified'. Whereas the term 'original' implies that a car hasn't been restored, 'survivor' implies that it is 'largely' unrestored but will have had some work carried out to keep it on the road. A 'survivor' is also the sort of car that can be used - as opposed to an 'original' low mileage example which will probably cover very few miles. In some circles it can get quite specific - certain American car clubs, for example, have a 'survivor' category which stipulates a model must be over 20 years old and 50% unrestored as well as driving to the show. COULD YOU RECOMMEND AN OUTDOOR COVER FOR MY 20-YEAR-OLD MAZDA MX 5? Could you recommend an outdoor cover for my 20-year-old Mazda MX 5? I expect the cover to remain on a week or more throughout the winter. Asked on 20 August 2019 by M.R H.J. says If you're keeping your car outside, you'll need to get a cover that is not only waterproof but also breathable to prevent the paintwork deteriorating. Hamilton Classic does a good range (www.hamiltonclassic.co.uk) and offers 30 different sizes - expect to pay about £175. If you want to go for a fitted cover it's going to cost you a bit more. Remember you'll need to clean the car every time you put the cover on it. And some car covers aren't rated for high winds (or will need an additional locking strap). You'll also need to keep an eye on on the cover and disperse any heavy rain or snow that builds up on it. Finally, the cover itself will need cleaning so check that you can either wash the cover while it's the car or that you have access to a suitably sized washing machine. Friday 27th September 2019

FAI NATIONAl P.R.O. OF THE YEAR CLIMATE CHANGE CONCERNS HAVEN’T REACHED THE COMPLEX: Firstly before I begin this week’s column and my Opinion Piece that starts off the two pages I want to say that these are my opinions and not necessarily that of the Advertiser of in this case of Garvey’s Tralee Warriors who I have not contacted for a comment. The headline here follows on from all the publicity over the last few weeks re climate change and comes after the Climate change march by students. And it’s teenagers I am writing about and particularly those who might have attended the Garvey’s Tralee Warriors versus UCD Marian in this seasons SuperLeague opener at the Complex last Saturday night. I have to be fair and say that none of the hundreds of teenagers who were there were misbehaving. But my issue firstly is regarding their constant moving around even during play. I will come onto how I link it with the climate in a minute! Groups of the teenagers were hardly sitting down for any of the game. They were in and out constantly leading to the Commissioner asking MC Alan Cantwell to eventually announce that the game was in danger of being stopped. The side lines are tight and the players are moving at fast speeds and if they collided with the kids and teenagers without either seeing it coming there could be serious consequences. So back to the climate part of the headline! Firstly I will say that I did see many cars dropping groups of fans to the game so obviously car-pooling was in operation and of course it was a wet night so many who might have walked needed drives to and from the Complex. But then there is the mobile phone issue!! I am not sure if Greta Thunberg and those on the climate change side have done any research on how the radiation from mobile phones affects the climate / ozone layer but if you had a heat map over the Complex it would be fairly hot!! Many of those at the game spent the whole night on their phones. It must be disheartening for players if they get a minute to look at the crowd and see many of them on their phones. And I will say that this is not just teenagers!! Friday 27th September 2019

Finally I have to saw I was very disappointed when leaving the Complex to see how much rubbish was left on the floor at the end of the game. Yes I know the club makes money from the shop but the amount of plastic water and mineral bottles and sweets, chocolate and Tayto packets just left under seats was very disappointing. Having worked for a number of years managing cinemas in Tralee and Killarney I am well used t seeing lots of debris left after crowds. But at least in the cinemas the staff were paid – not that that is reason enough to just throw your empty containers on the floor. I am guessing that in the Complex as it’s the Warriors that are renting the hall then they are responsible for the clean-up. There is a wonderful group of volunteers involved with that club and they have enough to do on game night than having to stay on afterwards for a big clean up. I am just thinking that it does not look as bad after basketball games in Killarney or Killorglin but then the crowds are not as big. Last week’s game, which we are reviewing below, was another cracker going down to the last second. Personally I did not feel the atmosphere was as loud as last season but maybe that was because it was just the first night. So for all those who are going to the rest of the Warriors home games take the hour away from your phone, get involved in the game and encourage your friends to do the same and you will certainly appreciate the efforts the players are putting in. And if you are treating yourself during the game take the wrappers with you and throw them in the bins. Now I don’t think for a minute that any of this will make a blind bit of difference to the climate – bar maybe a lot less phone emissions – but you will all feel better and as they saw in a certain advert – Every Little Helps!! AND SO TO THE GAME: UCD passed the test and took the points back to Dublin winning 73-72 to gain some revenge for their two end of season defeats that saw the Warriors life the SuperLeague title. Garvey’s Tralee Warriors PRO Alan Cantwell reviews how the game went. For the fourth season

in a row Garvey’s Tralee Warriors have opened their Super League campaign with a defeat as they succumbed to rivals UCD Marian by 73-72 at the Tralee Sport Complex last night. Despite taking control of the game in the second quarter to lead by 13 points at the break the Warriors were hit with a stunning offensive display by the visitors in the third quarter. Marian outscored the hosts by 26-9 to reignite the contest and leave it all to play for in the final quarter. While the early exchanges were tight Lawton put the Warriors into the lead with a three and when Keith Jumper stormed into the contest with two inspirational baskets either side of a fine effort from Rap Buivydas the Warriors eased ahead. Jumper was again on hand to slam in a dunk late on to help the Warriors lead 20-14 at the end of the first. The home side looked to be getting a hold of the game in the second quarter and with scores from Lawton, Jumper and Buivyda the Warriors were 14 points up approaching the half time break. Scott Kinevane edged the visitors closer before Eoin Quigley knocked down a superb three to see the Warriors head for the long break with a decisive 43-30 lead. The third quarter saw a total momentum shift from the hosts to the visitors with Neil Baynes in devastating form the Warriors half time advantage was wiped out by the midway point in the quarter. Baynes, Garrow and Kinevane all got in on the scoring act and the Warriors simply could not find their scoring touch. The Warriors woes were compounded with a body blow when their point guard Jonathan Lawton was forced out of the game with an ankle injury received when shaping for a layup from a fast break. UCD Marian drove on and the Dublin side were 56-52 up at three quarter time. Jumper and Bogdanovic were in range early in the final quarter in response to a score from Drumm and a three from Garrow. Jokubaitis and Paul Dick both hit the mark to edge the Warriors 65-61 ahead at the midway point. Baskets from UCD’s big players then saw them go 5 up with three minutes to play. Jumper and Bogdanovic combined to get the Warriors back to within a point and the Warriors fans were on their feet when two free throws from Paul Dick put them 71-70 in the shadows of the winning post. However a foul on Kinevane saw Drumm make one of two and then winning back possession and firing in the decisive score. Paul Dick had a chance to force the game into over- time but landed just one from two with two seconds on the clock to leave the final score Garvey’s Tralee Warriors 72 UCD Marian 73. Scorers: Warriors: Keith Jumper 18 Daniel Jokubaitis 11 Ivan Bogdanovic11 - UCD Marian: Mike Garrow 19 Neil Baynes 16 Barry Drumm 14 Next Up: For the Warriors it is the visit of Belfast Star to the Tralee Sports Complex next Saturday night – tip off is 7.30pm.

AT THE TRACK: On Friday night at the Kingdom Greyhound Stadium it’s the final of the ON325 yards Novice Stake plus the semifinal of the Fr. Casey Ladies GAA A6 Buster stake. On Saturday night there is an all sponsored benefit night for Crotta GAA with lots of kids entertainment and music after racing. On a busy weekend racing continues on Sunday evening with the first of 8 away at 6.36pm. NIAMH TAKES THE HONOURS IN DUBLIN: Kerry’s Niamh Clifford of Star of the Luane A.C. took the honors in the women’s field at this year’s KBC Dublin Half Marathon with a time of 1:22:28, she was followed by Shirley Coyle of Raheny Shamrocks in second with Sli Cualann A.C.’s Sarah Baryga third across the line with a time of 1:23:58. The KBC Dublin Half Marathon took place on Saturday in the Phoenix Park with a sold-out entry of 9,000 runners. Clifford was 5th last year and is hoping to run the Dublin marathon in October. CAUSEWAY RUNS FOR A GOOD CAUSE: Causeway Macra na Feirme are hosting a 5K/10K Fun Run in aid of Down Syndrome Kerry taking place from An Tochar Adult Education Centre, Causeway on Sunday, 29th September 2019. On the day, registration will take place from 11am, with the run starting at 12 Noon Sharp. The cost is €10 per person to complete the 10K route and €5 per person to complete the 5K route. There will also be refreshments for participants after in Harty’s Bar, Causeway NO FAIRY TALES ON THIS HILL: While we all know the story of Jack and Jill going up the hill I doubt if they had it as tough as the riders will have this Sunday. That is because the National Hill Climb championships are being hosted by the Tralee Manor West club on the hill outside Crag Cave. The Hill Climb is known as the Race of Truth and while it might only last 3 or 4 minutes there is no hiding place on the 1.36km that has an average gradient of 10% with parts of the hill much steeper than than. When the organisers need to have oxygen and a defibrillator at the finish it shows how deep the riders will go in their 3 to 4 minutes that they will be on the bike. From a Kerry point of view Conor Kissane is one of the favourites for the overall title having come second in 2018 and third in 2019. The sign on for the riders is from 10am to 11am with the first rider on the road from 12 noon. Prize giving will take place in the sponsor’s hotel at 2pm with honours to be won in the senior, M40, M50 and M60 categories.

ON THE GREENS: PITCH AND PUTT NEWS: Both Tralee and Deerpark were in Bruff last weekend but missed out on making the knock out stages of the National Gents Nett Inter-Club qualifying competition. Tralee were very close and only missed out on count back in claiming the final of the five spots that were on offer to Munster sides last Saturday on their first time back in the event in a few years. Michael Creagh (92), Keith O’Brien (97), John Fitzgerald (102), Danny O’Leary (104), Paul O’Shea (106) and Patrick Byrne (110) were their counting scores in a seven-man team that included Reece Sugrue as well. Their total of 611 was tied with teams from the Collins and St Annes clubs in Cork but Tralee’s ‘Back 18’ total of 298 was three shots worse than the Collins side with the latter getting the final spot by virtue of a combined ‘Back 18’ of 295. Deerpark had two teams at the event but neither qualified from the club that reached the semi-finals for the last three years. This weekend sees the Munster Scotch Foursomes take place in St Stephens, Co Cork on Sunday with seven pairs from the county entered in the event. ON THE GREENS: GOLF:
