AN APOLOGY FROM TRALEE ADVERTISER We regularly receive contributions from the general public towards our "It's only a Joke " page, which is one of the most popular pages in our magazine. We deeply regret that in last Friday's edition we published, through genuine human error, a joke which was not intended to be included on our magazine, as we deemed it to be of an offensive nature and not for publication... We profusely apologise for it's inclusion. We know that our "it's only joke" page is read by both young and old and endeavor to ensure that content on this page will continue to do what a good joke does, which is to make us laugh, and certainly not to be offensive.

Medical Matters EXERCISE. WHY BOTHER? TEN TIPS TO GET FIT By Dr David Buckley 1. The minimum recommended level of strenuous physical exercise is 30 – 40 minutes three times a week for adults, and six times a week for children and teenagers. 2. Aerobic exercises that gets your heart beating fast and your breathing rate up continuously for 30 to 40 minutes is the best (e.g. brisk walk, jogging, cycling, swimming, aerobics, rowing, football, tennis, P.E. etc.) Shorter exercise sessions more frequently will also work (10 -15 minutes 6 times a week). 3. You are more likely to keep up your exercise programme if you do activities that you enjoy with others. 4. A good rule of thumb is you should spend as much time exercising as you do in front of a screen (e.g. the total time spent at the cinema, watching tv, on the internet, and playing computer or video games) 5. If you are beginning an exercise programme, start gradually and build up slowly. 6. Remember to stretch all your muscles for three to five minutes before and after exercise. 7. Wear suitable clothing; e.g. waterproof clothing if it is raining and a reflective vest and torch at night.
8. Drink plenty of isotonic fluids before, during and after exercise; 9. There are many physical benefits to regular physical exercise: • Increased muscle strength • Reduced weight, especially if combined with a sensible eating programme. • Reduced blood pressure • Reduced cholesterol levels • Reduced heart rate • Reduced back pain 10. There are many mental benefits to regular physical exercise: • Increased concentration at work, school and for exams • Increased mood – physical exercise releases endorphins, which can result in a “runner’s high”. • Increased desire for sex and enhanced sexual performance • Better sleep patterns – exercise increases the body demand for sleep • Reduces stress • Reduces depression and anxiety • Reduces cravings, e.g. for cigarettes, alcohol, caffeine or sugar. If there was a drug that could do all of this, everyone would be on it. However, regular physical exercise costs nothing and is free of side effects!

‘Good Morning Mister Turner’ exhibition comes to Siamsa Tíre Following inclusion in the annual exhibition of Turner watercolours in the National Gallery of Ireland earlier this year, Irish printmaker, Niall Naessens brings his ‘Good Morning Mister Turner’ exhibition to the Siamsa Tíre Galleries. The exhibition will be officially opened on Friday 5th October(today) at 6pm by Anne Hodge (Curator of Prints and Drawings, National Gallery of Ireland) - all are welcome to attend. The exhibition will include a series of etchings and drawings by Naessens constituting a meditation on landscape, inspired by the work of J.M.W. Turner. The exhibition is open from 1st October to 30th November 2018. Based in Brandon in Kerry, Naessens has long been interested in the work of the great nineteenth-century artist Turner. Responding to the Gallery’s collection of Turner watercolours, Naessens 4

acknowledges the unavoidable influence that the artist exerts over the field of landscape today. He approaches Turner’s work obliquely, not as images to be imitated or even interpreted, but as a means of looking at the landscape. Anne Hodge, Curator of Prints and Drawings, National Gallery of Ireland, says: “The art of both Turner and Naessens combines the ordinary and the extraordinary. Both artists manipulate landscape, subtly changing things to suit their purpose. Showing the work of these two artists in the National Gallery of Ireland demonstrates how Turner is still a forceful presence, inspiring and prompting today’s artists to create new and exciting work.”

Identity protection
If someone steals you identity online it can be very a very traumatic experience. So it’s very important that you protect yourself online. Here are a few tips to protect yourself.... Never click on a link you did not expect to receive The golden rule. The main way criminals infect PCs with malware is by luring users to click on a link or open an attachment. "Sometimes phishing emails contain obvious spelling mistakes and poor grammar and are easy to spot," says Sidaway of Integrails. Use different passwords on different sites With individuals typically having anything up to 100 online accounts, the tendency has become to share one or two passwords across accounts or use very simple ones, such as loved ones' names, first pets or favorite sports teams. Indeed, research by Ofcom in the UK last month revealed that over half of UK adults (55%) use the same passwords for most, if not all, websites they visit, while one in four (26%) use birthdays or names as passwords. Any word found in the dictionary is easily crackable Never reuse your email password A hacker who has cracked your main email password has the keys to your [virtual] kingdom. Passwords from the other sites you visit can be reset via your main email account. A criminal can trawl through your emails and find a treasure trove of personal data: from banking to passport details, including your date of birth, all of which enables ID Always update your Internet security and windows.

Freesat in the UK are planning to launch a new box, which will offer ultra-high definition content .At the moment we , in Ireland ,are restricted in what on-demand content we can watch.... for example we can’t watch BBC iPlayer due to the geo-block. Now I am getting around this by using smart dns and it seem to be working great. I recently looked at the new saorview connect box and to be honest I found it very slow to switch from saorview to satellite. I was however very disappointed that there is no recording feature as of yet even though it was promised by April of this year.

I grew up with that music , a lot of the crowd who come out on Sat night to the Brogue are very familiar with this music and even a lot of the younger generation in their 20s and 30’s are really into the older Music .... we are talking Beatles , Bee Gees , The Rolling Stones , Wings , Pink Floyd , The
Monkees Bob Marley , The Police , Deacon Blue , Simple Minds , Dire Straits , Abba , the list goes on ...Remember MT USA with Fab Vinny ...we are talking Michael Jackson , Van Halen, The Pointer Sisters , Starship , The Eagles , Fleetwood mac and who could forget the 90’s ...Steps , The Cranberries, Backstreet Boys , Green Day ...so many songs to play ! Dan’s heading to Kenya next month! “I have decided to volunteer to go to Kenya this November for two weeks to
create social media and website content for Brighter Communities Worldwide.I will be part of a larger volunteer group from Kerry and Cork who will also be working on the ground. Each volunteer is asked to raise €1000 specifically for the charity. This is outside my travelling, accomodation and medical expenses which I will pay for myself. When researching the charity I noticed that while they had up to date websites and social media pages, they were lacking good video footage showing exactly the work they were doing on the ground. When I mentioned my proposal their eyes just lit up and that is what convinced me to volunteer. I was also very impressed with the way they conducted their activities and their no nonsense approach to solving problems. Please support me in fundraising for Brighter Communities Worldwide, your contribution will make an impact, whether you donate a little or a lot. Everything helps.... Dan .....” Best of luck Dan from everyone here at The Tralee Advertiser
Castleisland PO is part of the ‘Digital Assist’ programme at ten Post Offices The Irish Postmasters’ Union (IPU) this week welcomed the announcement of the Digital Assist pilot programme in ten rural Post Offices across the country. The announcement includes government funding of €80,000 to equip ten Post Offices with kiosk units to help citizens access Government and Local Authority information and services. The specially designed units will offer people the facility within the community to easily find State and Local Authority information and Postmasters at each Office have been trained in use of the machines. In addition people can print out their important information free of charge. The first kiosk has been

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... Michael asks ... ”Are you waiting for a hip or knee operation?” I am very concerned about what is going on in University Hospital Kerry (UHK) at present and would be very worried that procedures will begin at all this year to this end I have been exploring Belfast to have these procedures carried out there. To have this carried out in Belfast it would involve 4 trips up for Consultation, Post Op, Operation and then finally the check up a few weeks after
operation which I appreciate is a lot of visits so I have spoken to them and we have arranged that they will carry out the consultation and post op in the one day so this prevents an extra trip up. To facilitate this service I will co-ordinate a trip up by bus to have this done on the one day which will be Sunday 21st Oct which will involve early morn trip and return home the same night so if you are interested
in this please contact me as spaces are limited to 15 patients on the day Travelling for the actual operation and follow up check-up would be arranged by yourself as this would be very difficult to arrange to get
everyone done at the same time For further information please contact Martina in my office before Tuesday 9th Oct to book on 064 6685782
Happy dad promises to share entire €500,000 EuroMillions fortune with family It was a life changing day for three separate winners at National Lottery headquarters in Dublin city this week as players from Kerry, Louth and Mayo picked up a massive €1.1 million in prize money from EuroMillions and scratch card games. There were emotional celebrations for the first winners of the day as a large extended family from Co. Kerry travelled to Dublin to collect one of four EuroMillions Plus top prizes won last Friday night, which were worth €500,000 each. The winning Kerry man who wishes to keep his win private was surrounded by his large family when he handed his ticket into lottery officials as he announced that he would be sharing the prize among the close relatives in attendance. “Last Friday evening, I didn’t have a half a million euro and I was still the happiest man in the world. We have a very close family and life is 14

too short to be worrying about money. Some of the family here thought that I might give them a small few bob each to pay off a few car loans and that sort of thing but to see their faces when they were told they were getting an equal share, you just cannot buy that happiness,” he said. The stunned family promised to be sensible with their windfall but the winning ticketholder will be planning some extra holidays for the winter months with his loving wife, “My wife loves her holidays and often I Friday 5th October 2018
don’t have the time to go. We’ll have to plan a couple of sun holidays in the winter and who knows, we might even upgrade to first class,” he laughed.

Bexblah Beauty HELLO EVERYONE! HOPE YOU’RE ALL HAVING A GREAT WEEK. SINCE TALKING ABOUT MY HAIR JOURNEY LAST WEEK, THIS WEEK I’M GOING TO BE TALKING ABOUT MY CURRENT HAIRCARE ROUTINE. Proper haircare is so important for me. I like to use more high end products on my hair because of all the bleach, dyeing and heat it has taken over the years. So here’s all the products I use on my hair currently. SHAMPOO & CONDITIONER For my shampoo and conditioner I’m currently alternating between two different ones. I like to alternate because I feel my hair gets too used to a shampoo and conditioner after a while so it’s good to switch it up.
For shampoo and conditioner I’m currently alternating between Redken and Pureology. Redken Extreme Shampoo & Conditioner: Featuring the exclusive Interlock Protein Network (IPN) and Fortifying Complex. Redkens Extreme Shampoo delivers a targeted care formula for those trampled tresses damaged by Heat Styling, brushing and even chemical processing. This intense conditioning will leave hair protected, healthy, shiny and ultimately more resilient to breakage. FITNESS!
HELLO MY STRONG STRONG FRIENDS! I hope you’re all having a great week This week I’m going to talk about “getting back on track” after a holiday, big session or just life getting in the way. So here’s a few tips for “Getting back into routine” / “getting back to normal” after a bit of a session. 1. WATER - If you know me you know this is always my first port of call. Make sure you are keeping yourself hydrated and drink at least 3 litres a day. Water will help flush out the system and make you feel like you’re doing something right. 2. DONT STARVE - Just because you’ve went off track for a few days, doesn’t mean you should try make up for it by starving yourself. Go back to eating your normal amount and you’ll feel better. 3. SWEAT IT OUT - I just love the feeling of sweating the badness out of me. Even go to the sauna if you’re not up for the gym just yet! 4. COOK YUMMY TREATS - I know my breakfast tomorrow will definitely be my protein pancakes with bacon medallions and I literally could not be more excited. Then for dinner maybe a homemade burrito, avocado is calling my name! By making food that you enjoy that you know fits your regular eating plan, you’re helping yourself! 5. SET SOME GOALS - Now that summer is basically over some people can sit back and ‘relax’ on their goals. Because some people go to the gym for ‘the summer body’ - which I mean, if you’re doing it for that and not your health or general well being… ok. But personally my goals stay with me all year round. And I already have two mini goals picked for the rest of 2018 so I stay focused. If you’re feeling a bit meh after recent festivities or summer in general. Go ahead and set a goal or two!

Working on a keyboard your chest muscles can become tight and the muscles between your shoulder blades might be underused. This stretch will help correct this muscle imbalance:
Nothing beats getting away from your desk for a walk, but when that’s not possible mobilise your spine and reduce feelings of stiffness in your back with this simple stretch:
Long periods of sitting with your knees and hips flexed can cause the muscles at the back of your legs (hamstrings) to shorten and become tight. Address this problem with the following stretch: 1. Perch on the edge of your seat and stretch your right leg out in front of you 2. Rest your heel on the floor with your foot pointing up 3. Lean forward slightly from your hips and look straight ahead. You should feel a

Spending too much time sitting can leave you at a greater risk of injury to your knees and lower back. Try this to stretch out your quads:
Good posture helps keep your back, neck and other joints healthy. Try these tips to improve your posture – especially if slouching at your deck has become a habit:

IT’S ONLY A JOKE An Apology from us
We regularly receive contributions from the general public towards our “It’s only a Joke“ page, which is one of the most popular pages in our magazine. We deeply regret that in last Friday’s edition we published ,through genuine human error, a joke which was not intended to be included on our magazine , as we deemed it to be of an offensive nature and not for publication... We profusely apologise for it’s inclusion. We know that our “it’s only joke” page is read by both young and old and endeavor to ensure that content on this page will continue to do what a good joke does, which is to make us laugh, and certainly not to be offensive . Flu Vaccination
Myths and Facts
KNOW YOUR RIGHTS: MAKING A WILL
Advice on Flu Vaccination from your
Each September I begin to encourage many of my patients to get the flu vaccine. Yet many of them refuse. This is usually because they believe one or more of the myths about the flu vaccine. Let me try to dispel these myths. MYTH: “The flu shot gave me the flu” FACT: The flu vaccine contains inactivated virus and cannot cause infection. The most common side effects will be mild soreness, redness or swelling where the injection was given. Some people experience mild flu lie symptoms as their immune system responds to the vaccine but this is not flu and will pass in a day or so. MYTH: “Vaccines are not proven to prevent the flu” FACT: If you get the flu vaccination you are 60% less likely to need treatment for the flu. Flu vaccination reduces flu related hospitalisation by up to 70%. MYTH: “It’s better to get the flu than the vaccine” FACT: Flu can be severe and can cause serious illness and death. Every year many people need hospital treatment for influenza and between 200 and 500 people in Ireland, mainly older people, die from influenza each winter. MYTH: “I should wait to get vaccinated until later so that I am covered until the end of the season” FACT: The vaccination takes 10-21 days to become fully effective. Flu is a highly contagious viral infection and at risk individuals can quickly develop symptoms after coming into contact with the virus. Therefore the later you get the vaccination the greater the risk of getting the flu while waiting for the vaccination to work. WHO SHOULD GET VACCINATED? The highest risk of complications from influenza occur among children under 2 years old, adults the age of 65, pregnant women, and people of any age with certain chronic medical conditions such as diabetes, or weakened immune systems. All at risk people should get vaccinated but if you are a carer or a relative of high risk person you should also be vaccinated in order to prevent you transmitting the virus to them. If you have any queries about flu vaccinations please contact your local Haven pharmacist.
Question I would like to make a will. Do I need to go to a solicitor or can I draw up the will myself? Answer It is important for you to make a will because, if you do not, the law on intestacy decides what happens to your property in the event of your death. Writing a will can ensure that proper arrangements are made for your dependants and that your property is distributed in the way you wish after your death (subject to certain rights of spouses or civil partners and children). You can draw up a will yourself or you can hire a solicitor to help you. All of the following legal requirements apply: • The will must be in writing. • You must be over 18 (unless you are or have been married). • You must be of sound mind. • You must sign or mark the will or acknowledge the signature or mark in the presence of two witnesses. • Your two witnesses must sign the will in your presence. • Your two witnesses cannot be people who will gain from your will and they must be present with you at the same time for their attestation to be valid. The witnesses’ spouses or civil partners also cannot gain from your will. • Your witnesses must see you sign the will but they do not have to see what is written in it. • The signature or mark must be at the end of the will. If any of these requirements are not met, the will is not legally valid. If you want to change your will after you make it, you can add a codicil (amendment or change) to your will. This codicil must meet the requirements set out above. You should keep an updated list of your assets. You can use a form to record where your possessions are kept. This makes it easier to identify and trace your assets after you die. You should keep the list in a safe place.

TORQUING CARS! DAVID BECKHAM UNVEILS NEW VINFAST SALOON AND SUV AT PARIS MOTOR SHOW
Vinfast, a subsidiary of multi-trillion-dong Vietnamese conglomerate Vingroup, unveiled its first two passenger vehicles to large crowds of curious journalists at the Paris Motor Show on Tuesday. Alongside the obvious no-shows at this year’s Mondial de l’Automobile, this relatively new entrant to the world of car manufacturing revealed an SUV and a saloon in what is thought to be a long line of planned machines including a range of electric cars, buses and scooters. The LUX A2.0 Sedan and the LUX SA2.0 SUV are described Italiandesigned, with European technology and “Vietnamese spirit”. They are understood to have been developed following an unusual nationwide poll of 62,000 people in Vietnam, in which participants chose their favourite design from a range of sketches. The results are sleek, modern, and clearly people-pleasers. Le Thi Thu Thuy, the chairwoman of VinFast, stated that these cars “represent our intention for VinFast to be a successful automotive brand both in Vietnam and internationally.
NEW LAND ROVER DEFENDER ‘SPYSHOT’ PICTURES TEASED AT PARIS MOTOR SHOW
Land Rover has released official ‘spyshots’ of the next Defender, an all-new version of the long-running 4x4 that was very closely related to the original Land Rover that made its debut 70 years ago. The new model is expected to go on sale in 2020. At the Paris motor show, Land Rover’s chief commercial officer Felix Brautigam and its UK managing director Rawdon Glover revealed that the ‘pilot build’ project is up and running, meaning that much of the major engineering has been done and the development cars are hand-built in very low volumes to gauge production feasibility. As far as we can tell, these ‘pilot build’ cars shown closely resemble the vehicle that will enter series production, rather than test ‘mules’ based on an existing production car. However, the duo declined to confirm whether or not the new Defender would be built at Land Rover’s traditional home of Solihull in the West Midlands.
HYUNDAI TO SUPPLY 1,000 HYDROGEN FUEL CELL LORRIES IN SWITZERLAND
Hyundai has entered an agreement to supply 1,000 hydrogen fuel cell lorries to the Swiss commercial vehicle market over a five-year period, starting in 2019. The Korean manufacturing giant signed a memorandum of understanding with Zurich-based H2 Energy at the IAA Commercial Vehicles Show in Hanover, outlining plans to introduce the vehicles to a variety of fleet operators in Switzerland. Currently in development, the 18-tonne trucks (34 tonne gross combined weight with a trailer) have a range of roughly 250 miles and can be fully recharged in seven minutes. This refuelling time is broadly comparable with conventional diesel HGVs, but significantly more time efficient than equivalent battery-electric powertrains. Fuel cell vehicles, or FCEVs, convert hydrogen into electricity, which is then used to power electric motors. The only tailpipe emission from these vehicles is pure water, and the hydrogen itself can be generated using clean energy. Advantages over battery-electric powertrains include greater range and shorter recharging times. Hydrogen refuelling infrastructure is sparse but growing. The Swiss collaboration will include some development of a supply chain for renewable hydrogen.“A sustainable hydrogen economy needs a designated ecosystem for hydrogen,” said Rolf Huber, Chairman of H2 Energy. “This is why our collaboration between Hyundai Motor, H2 Energy, the Swiss H2 Association, and the Key electricity producer Alpiq in Switzerland is strategic and makes a lot of sense.” Hyundai launched the ix35 fuel cell, one of the first production hydrogen cars, in 2013, and will launch its next-generation Nexo FCEV in 2019.
HONEST JOHN ANSWERS YOUR MOTORING QUERIES Film noir I collect my Motability-sourced Mercedes-Benz GLA very soon. Motability has told me it is prohibited for a dash-cam to be wired to the fusebox, however, while Halfords has advised my unit cannot practically be installed by connecting to the cigarette lighter. Any ideas? GM HY says ....I don’t know of any dash-cams that can’t be powered from the 12v accessory socket. They can be wired into the car, but if Motability prohibits it on a leased vehicle then I’m afraid you’ll have to abide by that rule.

TALKING SPORT WITH THE TRALEE ADVERTISER EVERYTHING’S COMING UP ROSES!
with “The Voice” Pat Harnett
FAI NATIONAl P.R.O. OF THE YEAR ALL CHANGE ON AND OFF THE GAA PITCH: Firstly as I am writing this Anthony Maher has become the third Kerry player to announce his retirement from the county set-up. He was a player who always gave his all to the green and gold and leaves with a nice haul of medals including two All Irelands, 8 Munster titles and an All Star amongst many other awards. He played under a number of Kerry managers and felt that now the time was right to step away even if it was with “a heavy heart”. What his retirement and that of the two others that have been announced does is allows the new manager to promote some the players who might have been seen as fringe players and then bring in more players especially during the League. However the new manager whoever he is will hope that not too many more go as he will need some experienced players to anchor his new squad. And who will that manager be? Well last week I think I said that my information was that it will be Maurice Fitzgerald. However after this weekend the name I was told was Pat O’Shea. Whoever it will be we will know by the time I am writing this column next week. And not alone will be know the manager but we will know the back room team as well. It does seem that Peter Keane is not the front runner and Jack O’Connor’s name is being mentioned less frequently. It does seem that the idea of the whole package of a backroom team being part of the deal seems to have made some ‘less interested’ as before. But then again if a person threw e10 on every name they had been told had gotten the job they would probably be down e30 to e40 of the e50 they would have bet! Whichever of the candidates does get the job the question is whether they will get the time to put a new squad together and put their stamp on it? Will the Kerry GAA public be willing to give the new management team a season or two free of the

pressure of having to win the All Ireland? Only time will tell. Off the Field: There has been a lot of talk about the state of the game of Gaelic football and the dominance of the Dublin team. These really should be separate things as in every period of time there will be a team that dominates. Like Dublin in the 70’s and Kerry in the 80’s. Both of these changed how football was played which is what good teams do. The ill’s or perceived ills of football are a much wider issues. The game is being played by players who are much faster and fitter. There is a huge emphasis from managers of possession and this has led to the over emphasis on hand passing. So now we have a proposed set of new rules. But these, which are outlined below, will make the game harder to referee. Looking at a different sport and in the basketball game between Warriors and Keanes in the SuperLeague there were three referees. In Division 1 there is two but the speed of the top level is so much faster that there is an extra official. Soccer has looked at this by bringing in VAR and assistant referees behind the goals to help the main official. And if you think they don’t do much then look at the Cork City v Bohs FAI Cup semi-final where the official behind the goal gave a late (dubious or warranted depending on which side of the argument you are on) penalty to Cork. So why has football or hurling looked at bringing in a second ref? They cover half the pitch each and of course if they spot something off the ball or behind the refs back they will be in contact. Back to the 5 new Rules and they are: Hand pass: To introduce a restriction of three consecutive passes of the ball with the fist or open hand by players of the team in possession. While the idea is probably the right one this will certainly test officials and players to keep count and like every rule players will look to get every advantage. Friday 5th October 2018
Should a player score a decisive score after a fourth hand pass but before the ref blows the whistle then calling it back will be ‘fun’. Side-line Kick: That the ball shall be played in a forward direction from the kick with the exception being in the case of a sideline kick being taken by an attacking player on or inside the opposition 13m line then the ball can be kicked in any direction. This will certainly speed up the game and especially if games are tight entering the last period then it will stop teams going backwards in order to play the possession game. The Mark: There are a number of initiative s to try and increase the use of the mark and this is certainly a positive. The more high fielding the better in the game and I am sure that coaches and managers will be working on this during the winter. The Sin Bin: This is one of the most interesting of the new suggestions. The penalty on the day for a black card infraction or two yellow card infractions will be the ordering off for ten minutes in the sin-bin. A subsequent black card infraction shall be penalised by a Black Card followed by a Red. A subsequent yellow card infraction shall be penalised by the showing of a Yellow Card followed by a Red Card. In either case the team will be reduced by a player with no substitute allowed. The line relating to the maximum number of substitutions in normal time returning to 5 has been included here. This is one that could possibly see some negative reaction. Kick Out/Zoning: From a kick out two players only from each team shall be positioned between the two 45’s. The goal keeper and a maximum of six players from each team shall be behind the respective 45m lines until the ball is kicked. The ball from the kick-out shall travel beyond the 45m line before being played by a player of the defending team. Other roles relating to kick out remain unchanged. While again the sentiment of this is right it’s a hard one for a
referee to control. It will slow down the kick outs as the ref must be satisfied that the players are in the right zone. And again will be hard for the ref to make sure players stay in the zones until the ball is kicked. But it probably force keepers to go long which I presume is the aim of the rule change. The reason these are being discussed now is that playing rules of Gaelic Games can only be changed in years divisible by 5! (I would love to have been in the Committee Room that came up with that rule). It will make an interesting few months as these new rules are trialled and of course the feedback from players and coaches will be vital to see how many, if any, make it into the Rule Book. ALL FOUR HAVE HOPES OF COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP GLORY: So now there are four. Following last weekend’s action and the subsequent draws for the semifinals Dingle will play East Kerry and Kerins O’Rahillys will face Dr Crokes with the games being played as a double header in Austin Stack Park on Sunday October 14th and 2pm and 3.45. Interestingly both semi-finals are repeats of earlier rounds. Dingle will be a tougher opposition for East Kerry than they were in Round 2 when they lost 6-16 to 2-10. And if Marc O’Connor is still available he will certainly strengthen the west Kerry side. But one has to opt for East Kerry with their strength in depth. In the other game I bet Kerins O’Rahillys are wishing it was a straight knock-out championship as their win in the earlier round would have been the end of Dr Crokes. But they have to do it all again and they are certainly capable of it. The Crokes will be not have learned anything from their facile win over Legion but on the positive side the black and amber side were very impressive and will fancy themselves to reach another County Final. So I will pin my colours to the mast and say East Kerry and Dr Crokes in the decider which I would presume would be in the Fitzgerald Stadium. PARNELL’S NEWS: There was a great end to the 2018 Camogie season with the Veronica Stack Tournament which took place at Spa in Killarney. Parnells were represented by 3 teams at u9’s and also at u12’s. The u14’s used this as a great build-up to their up-coming County Championship. All these girls have shown great dedication and improvement over the season and are all looking at coming back for a new season next year. Parnells also wants to thank all those involved in running the tournament which all the girls

TALKING SPORT WITH THE TRALEE ADVERTISER thoroughly enjoyed. The under 6s finished their outdoor season in style Friday evening with a series of matches against North Kerry hurling giants Kilmoyley and Lixnaw with the biggest turn-out of the year. They will go indoors from October 19th. The u12’s defeated Ballyheigue in their final game of the County u12 Hurling League coming back from 2 points down to win by 5. It was a tougher day for the u12 Division 3 side as they lost out to a strong Causeway side. The u16/17 camogie girls also ended their season to round off a very good season for the girls. They will have the winter off before returning on March 1st 2019. Hurling in Caherslee is finished this year for the Under 10 boys but we’re not done yet. Starting the 19th of October we’ll start our 6 week Autumn academy on the large astroturf pitch in the complex. Cost is €15 for the 6 weeks or €3 per session. Thanks For Donation: Parnells club received our share of the €100,000 donation from JP McManus. Many thanks for this and it will be put to great use in our promotion of hurling and Camogie in the Tralee area. The Parnell’s AGM will take place on Friday November 16th at 8pm with the Awards Night for boys and girls on Friday November 9th in the Rose Hotel. KERRY CAMOGIE NEEDS YOUR HELP! On January 26th Kerry Camogie will hold a ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ Competition at Ballyroe Heights Hotel. For this event we want to create a committee to oversee matters. This will be a one-off committee for this event. If you are interested in helping or know of anyone who would be willing to come on board, please contact Fiona Flynn on 086 3306050. KERINS O’RAHILLYS NEWS: The whole club is delighted with the seniors win in in the County Championship and hopes to see a huge crowd cheering them on in the semi-final next weekend. The final is set for October 28th and we know that the squad and management will leave no stone unturned to reach the biggest day in football in Kerry. The club wishes a very long and happy retirement to Edmond Quirke who has served the club as grounds-man / caretaker for 23 years. He has been a hugely valued member of the club and a great friend to all the teams who played at the club. Academy: There was another great morning at Strand Road for the Academy with Sean Lynch and Mia Leane the Players of the Week at u6’s, Ansha Rahman
at u8’s and Anna Corridan and Conor Cronin at u10’s. In Round 2 of the Town League the u16’s took on Churchill who took a 5 point win in Round 2. The club wishes Churchill keeper Michael Dolan a speedy recovery as we had to go off injured towards the end of the game. There was no winner of the Lotto from the numbers drawn 16,17, 23 and 30with the next Jackpot being e2600. BALLYMAC NEWS: There was no winner of the Lotto from the numbers drawn 2,11,19 and 22 and the next jackpot will be e6,600. Under 10 Boys: The club had two teams in the Castleisland District Blitz that took place in Brosna and both enjoyed their days out. Their next outing is away to Churchill this Sunday to take part in the Siobhan Cotter Blitz. Under 16 Town league: The u16’s defeated Na Gaeil 4-09 to 1-10. This was a big result for the squad and management. Under 12 Girls: The u12 girls ended a successful 2018 season by winning the Town League which was run as a Blitz in Ballyrickard. They defeated Rahilly’s in the final after defeating Na Gaeil in the semifinals. They added this title to the County League Division One title and the North Kerry Division One Shield. The club held its very successful annual Gold Classic in Beaufort with over 30 teams entering. The winner of the golf classic and first prize of a four ball at the Old Head of Kinsale on a score of 92pts Dave leen ,Tony leen , Mike Quirke, Tom Aherne Second place on 91 points and a four ball at the Killarney golf club - Derek O’ Brien, Anthony Curran, Padraig McCarthy, James O Dowd. Nearest the pin went to Dermot Falvey with James O’Dowd taking the Longest Drive prize. The club thanks all those who supported the Golf Classic and to all who sponsored the prizes and to Beaufort Golf Club which was in perfect condition. ST PATS NEWS: There was no winner of the Lotto from the numbers drawn 9,15,20 and 30. The next jackpot will be e2,700. The Academies again had a great turn-out with the u6’s and u8’s training again this Sunday. The u10’ hosted a Blitz taking on Dromid Pearses, Na Gaeil and Beale. All the players really enjoyed the day. The u14 Girls had a great 5-07 to 2-05 win over Annascual in the North Kerry Division 5 Plate final. The club was proud of the effort put in by its players and all the St Brendan’s Board squad who came up just short in their Senior Football quarter final. They wish Rahillys all the best as the last

team left from the Tralee area. St Pat’s are looking for a new senior management team with Applications to the club secretary. SOCCER STORIES: The Kerry 17’s League of Ireland side will be looking to bounce back for a tough loss last weekend when they take on Limerick in the first round of the Shield. The game in this knock out competition takes place at Mounthawk Park on Sunday at 2pm. Limerick knocked Kerry out of this competition last season so revenge will be on the card. Kerry and Cobh Ramblers were involved in a 9 goal thriller last Sunday but came out on the wrong side of a 5-4 score line. Kerry were 3-1 up at half time and also missed a penalty in a game where once again they were close without getting any reward from the game. The 15’s play their last game of the season at home to Carlow / Kilkenny. They are looking to finish second in their group with the visitors already through – only the top side goes into the semi-finals. Kerry have been very competitive all season and hopefully many of these players will go on to play with the 17’s. In local soccer The Park defeated Tralee Dynamos in the Munster Youths Cup. There was also very impressive wins for The Park and Tralee Dynamos in the FAI Cup Round 2. WARRIORS LOSE OUT TO KEANES BUT BASKETBALL THE REAL WINNER: While the final score in the SuperLeague opener saw the visitors and newcomers Keane’s Supervalu Killorglin pip Garvey’s Tralee Warriors 89-86 the real winner was basketball. The Sports Complex was jammed from well before tip-off and the atmosphere from the off to the final buzzer was fantastic. The Warriors organisation, at their home games proves week after week their professionalism in dealing with such big crowds. On the court and credit to Killorglin who certainly proved that they can live in the SuperLeague and they led 23-21 at the end of the first quarter. Pierre Newton certainly made his mark on the game and a number of three certainly worried the home side. Quigley, Evans and Paul Dick were at the forefront of the Warriors battle. Keanes still led by 3 at the half. Kieran Donaghy deserves great credit for coming from the Stacks loss and certainly gave the crowd a huge lift when he came on and had a number of steals and points. One of his baskets put Warriors ahead at the end of the third. It looked like they would push on to a win from here but it wasn’t to be and down the stretch Friday 28th October 2018
Newton showed nerves of steel by hitting 6 from 6 from the free throw line to secure a famous win for Keanes. Top scorers: Garveys Tralee Warriors: Paul Dick 25, Jordan Evans 20, Fergal O Sullivan 9, Eoin Quigley 9 and for Keane’s SuperValu Killorglin: Pierre Newton 34, Daniel Jokubaitis 13, Daragh Jones 13 were the top socrers. Next up for Garvey’s Tralee Warriors is a trip to the Mardyke Arena this Friday night and a date with UCC Demons. Tip off there is 8.00pm. ON THE GREENS: PITCH & PUTT: The Munster Matchplay Finals took place in Fermoy and Mallow last weekend. From a Tralee point of view David Hobbert reached his semi-finals. He beat Noel Moynihan, Limerick’s PJ Ryan and Listowel’s John Heffernan top reach the Last 4. Sadly he lost out to eventual winner Sean O’Neill of Larkspur Park in that last 4 clash. In the Intermediate grade Tralee’s Aidan O’Sullivan went out in the Last 16 having beaten his clubmate John Fitzgerald in the first round at the first play-off hole. Tralee’s Lisa O’Connor was defeated in the First Round of the Junior Ladies event by eventual Runner-Up Michelle Flynn from Fermoy by 2&1. There is one major national event left for the year now, namely the National Inter-Club event which Deerpark qualified for the Quarter-Finals of the Gents Handicap event last weekend. They have been drawn to face Bagenalstown of Carlow in the Quarter-Finals on Saturday October 13th in Hillview, Clonmel. ON THE GREEN’S GOLF: In the Irish Boys Inter-Club Golf Championships held at the Tramore Golf Club Ballybunnion took 4th place. The team was made up of James O’Callaghan, Sean Malone and Ewan McHale. TRALEE GOLF CLUB: The winner of the Dooks Exchange was Bernard Costello from Shane O’Connor and Seamus Enright. Graham Spring won the Best Gross prize with Thomas Greaney winning the +18 handicap. In the Ladies section and their exchange with Dooks Maura McKenna was the winner from Karen Gearon and Annette Dineen. There was also a Ladies Singles competition with Fionnuala Mann taking the win from Eleanor Dowd. In the Senior Ladies section the winner was Mary Underwood with Bridie O’Sullivan in second and Maura McKenna taking 3rd on countback. Eda O’Kelly took 4th place.

Irish Water to write to homes and businesses in Kerry! Irish Water is to write to homes and businesses on the public water network in County Kerry where the drinking water quality is not as good as it could be. Water is still safe to drink in these schemes. Irish Water will outline what we are doing in these 5 schemes, which serve 6,182 customers, to improve supply by either an upgrade or a change in how the relevant water treatment plant works. In the past, Irish Water only contacted homes and businesses if there was a problem with their drinking
water supply that was likely to cause an immediate risk to health. Irish Water will continue to do that. However, the recent Water Services Policy Statement 2018 – 2025 called for better engagement with, and greater transparency for people using public water supplies. This direct communication is an important part of helping the public to understand what they do. Homes and businesses in 16 counties across the country on 53 different water supply schemes will receive
a detailed booklet outlining the issues with their water supply which might vary from elevated THMs; inadequate barriers for cryptosporidium; poor turbidity removal; presence of low levels of pesticides; or details of an Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) audit of a plant. Speaking about the public information campaign, Ian O’Mahony said,“Irish Water has worked closely with the EPA to identify the public water schemes that need a plan or action to improve
their water treatment. We are prioritising our investment in these treatment plants. Providing safe, clean drinking water for all in County Kerry is our first goal.” If members of the public have any questions that are not covered in booklet please phone us on Callsave 1850 278 278 or +353 1 707 2828 (24 hours a day, 7 days a week).
