Medical Matters WHAT IS HEALTH SCREENING? BY DR Screening is a way of finding out if people are at increased risk of a health problem, so that they can benefit from early investigations and treatment. Screening is not a diagnostic test for a condition. People often associate screening tests with cancer, but you can be screened for many different problems. The neonatal heelprick screens each baby for 6 severe conditions, including cystic fibrosis. The Beck’s Inventory is a questionnaire used to screen for depression. A simple blood test can screen for diabetes. For screening to be effective, the condition should be an important health problem for which there is treatment available and a benefit from treating patients early. The test must be performed in appropriate facilities, be acceptable to the public, and be cost-effective. This means some conditions are not suitable for screening, such as looking for brain tumours in the healthy population. Brain tumours can grow quite quickly, so screening could easily miss them. Screening would involve expensive brain scans that would expose people to high levels of radiation – putting them at risk of other cancers. Unfortunately, treatments for brain tumours are poor despite early intervention.
KATE VERNON
There is a free National Cancer Screening service in place, and we would recommend you check if you are registered with the relevant programme for you. • CervicalCheck offers smear tests to women between 25 and 60 years with routine screening perfomed every 3 years from ages 25 to 44, and every 5 years after age 45. • BreastCheck offers mammograms to women between 50 and 69 years every 2 years. • BowelScreen offers home test kits to men and women between 60 and 69 years every 2 years. Other screening tests can be done after discussion with your GP, for example prostate cancer or haemochromatosis screening. Next week, we will look at the benefits and limitations of screening.

Santa Rita 120 CABERNET SAUVIGNON
Made from estate vineyards in Alto Jahuel, with specially selected Cabernet grapes, the finished wine is aged 8 months in French and American oak barrels. The aromas are rich and chocolaty layering cassis with vanilla and sweet spices. It's a solid but fresh wine, almost chewy, with plush and plummy flavours layered with currents and spiced mocha.

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... Kerry’s youth commended at the Lee Strand/Kerry Garda Youth Achievement Awards 2018 Over two hundred and fifty people from across the county attended the Lee Strand/Kerry Garda Youth Achievement Awards 2018 in the Ballyroe Heights Hotel in Tralee on Friday, January 25th. The evening commenced with dinner and was followed by a presentation of twenty four awards, accompanied with an inspiring citation of each winner’s achievements. Twenty Merit Awards, a Group Award, a Special Achievement Award, a Community Safety Award and the Overall Winner Award were presented on the night. 17 year old Ian O’Connell from Killarney was described as an outstanding individual, an inspiration to all and a true real life hero when he was announced as the Overall Winner of the Lee Strand Kerry Garda Youth Achievement Awards 2018.
When Ian was 16 years old, he became paralysed from the neck down after falling off his bike in the Killarney National Park. The entire country was inspired by Ian O’Connell’s remarkable interview on the Late Late Show last May. His motto “If I can’t stand up, I will stand out” has made him a national hero for his positive attitude to life. The Lee Strand/Kerry Garda Youth Achievement Group Award was presented to the Sporting Chance Programme - National Learning Network. The Lee Strand/Kerry Garda Youth Special Achievement Award was presented to Ciarán Sears in Tralee. The Lee Strand/Kerry Garda Youth Achievement Community Safety Award was presented Kevin Lenihan, Eamon Nolan and James McDonnell from Castleisland Community College. Twenty Lee Strand/Kerry Garda Youth Achievement Merit Award Certificates were presented to individuals who have made a positive contribution to their community and make it a better place to live. The recipients were Alannah Blennerhassett, Tralee; Oisín Bolt, Killorglin; Ian Coleman Horgan, Killorglin; Zara Daly, Kilcummin; Nathan Egan, Castleisland; Con Enright, Currow Village; Ava Fitzmaurice, Castleisland; Edmond Healy, Duagh; Ellen Hickey, Killarney; Alexandra Kelly, Tralee; Caoimhe Lynch, Beaufort; Ciarán MacGearailt,

Donal Pierse, Chairperson, Lee Strand commented “Lee Strand is delighted to support the Kerry Garda Youth Achievement Awards since 1998. Over the past 21 years Lee Strand in association with An Garda Siochana have always been proactive in acknowledging and identifying the positive work by young people and voluntary groups to enhance community life in Kerry. The awards are a fantastic celebration of their
outstanding achievements.” Chief Superintendent Tom Myers stated “An Garda Síochána consider it essential to engage in a positive fashion with the young people in our communities. In doing so it is necessary to acknowledge positive achievements by those young people, whether these are in the fields of voluntary work in the community, sport, or education. It would not be possible to acknowledge this achievement and have an occasion whereby the families of nominees can join in the celebrations without the support from Lee Strand, the local Co-Op highly respected in the community.”

Bexblah Beauty HELLO BEAUTIFUL PEOPLE! I HOPE YOU’RE ALL HAVING AN AMAZING WEEK.
1.
Laura Mercier Setting Powder - I have gone through about 3 of these and I am obsessed. I absolutely swear by it. I use
it to set my under eye makeup and foundation.
2.
Jaclyn Hill X Becca Cosmetics Champagne Pop Highlighter - hands down my favourite highlighter ever. It
has a lovely golden highlight that looks perfect. Since finishing this I have moved onto the Anastasia Beverly Hills X Amrezy Highlighter.
3.
Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk Foundation - My ride or die, most used and most complimented foundation. I
am 100% obsessed with this, medium build level coverage, so weightless and photographs beautifully.
4.
Benefit Hoola Bronzer - definitely my favourite Bronzer, it’s not too dark and has zero orange undertones. I think
the one I have but nearly am finished is my fourth one? Either way I will be getting a fifth very soon.
5.
Clarins Makeup Setting Spray - I got sent this and I’d say I have about two sprays left in it. It’s an amazing setting
spray that also hydrates the skin. That and the Urban Decay All Nighter spray are both my favourites.
6
.Alien Perfume Theirry Mugler - it’s not often I use up a full bottle of perfume but this stuff is literally my number 1
perfume. I love it and every time I wear it I get asked about it.

BEXBLAH
FITNESS!
HELLO MY STRONG FRIENDS! I hope you’re all having a great week! Most people consistent with what they want, instead they set themselves unrealistic goals that they ‘have to’ reach within a certain amount of time. As January comes to an end we need to strive to be consistent for the rest of 2019 & therefore we won’t have the same goal in January 2020.
Rather than doing this torture to yourself, try something else… try to be consistent. Being consistent means knowing what you have to do, little by little, day in and day out, to reach your goals. It means that if you ‘mess up’ that you just go back to being consistent straight away. It’s all about
balance and consistently doing what needs to be done. There’s nothing wrong with being a bit more relaxed when it comes to all things health and fitness related, I’ve come to realise that being 100% on track 100% of the time for me personally, is not living. BUT. For the next 12 weeks I want to be consistent and see what results I can achieve. Maybe you have some area of your life where you’re putting in some of the work sometimes, so you’re not reaching your full potential because you’re not consistent. This is your sign, be consistent, put in the work you know needs to be put in.
CURRENT FAVOURITE WORKOUT I’ve been really into doing full body workouts at the gym lately, just to change it up! Here’s my current favourite workout. WARMUP HIIT sprints (20 secs on 40 secs off for 10-15 mins) WORKOUT Weighted step ups 3 sets of 10 each leg Kettlebell swings 3 sets of 10 each arm Sumo Squats 3 sets of 10 Walking Lunges 3 sets of 10 GRACE FIT UK UPPER BODY SET • Bicep curl • Hammer curl • 2 arm tricep extension • Underhand kickback • Arnold Press • Bent over one arm delt raise • Upright row • Front raise Then sometimes after the workout to cool down I do 10 mins uphill walking.

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... One Of Ireland’s Finest Techno Djs Cailin Comes To Rock The Abbey This Sat Feb 2 A longtime resident for one of the most consistent techno collectives in Dublin, Subject, there’s no denying Cailín’s talent as a DJ. Couple that with her underrated and somewhat overlooked penchant for production, which has earned her a spot on Jheri Tracks in the past, and it’s clear that she’s in a league of her own when it comes to club-specified techno. Having supported and played alongside some of techno’s biggest names in some of the country’s biggest clubs there’s no denying that there isn’t a scenario that Cailín hasn’t encountered while in command of the dance floor, making her much much more than your average techno DJ.

SPICY MEXICAN STEW
This spicy Mexican-style stew is loaded with vegetables, including carrots, an excellent source of vitamins A and K

2 tablespoons vegetable oil 1 1/2 pounds boneless pork loin, cut into 3-inch chunks Salt and freshly ground pepper 2 large celery ribs, finely diced 1 small red onion, finely diced 1 Anaheim chile, seeded and finely diced 2 garlic cloves, minced 2 teaspoons mild chile powder 1 tablespoon ground cumin Pinch of dried oregano 2 cups chicken stock 1 cup 1/2-inch-diced carrots Two 6-ounce pink fir potatoes, peeled and cut into 1-inch dice One large can diced tomatoes 1 pound tomatillos—husked, rinsed and cut into 1-inch dice Hot sauce Chopped cilantro, for garnish Corn tortilla chips, for serving
METHOD
Step 1 In a medium casserole , heat the oil. Season the pork with salt and pepper and cook over high heat until browned on 2 sides, about 2 minutes per side. Add the celery and onion and cook over moderate heat, stirring occasionally, until softened, about 7 minutes. Add the diced chile, garlic, chile powder, cumin and oregano and cook, stirring frequently, until fragrant, about 3 minutes. Add the chicken stock and bring to a boil. Add the carrots, potatoes, tomatoes and tomatillos, cover and simmer over low heat until the pork is cooked through, about 25 minutes. Step 2 Transfer the pork to a plate and shred with two forks. Meanwhile, simmer the stew over moderate heat until thickened, about 10 minutes. Stir the shredded pork into the stew and season with salt, pepper and hot sauce. Ladle the stew into bowls, garnish with chopped coriander and serve with a few tortilla chips.

A MAN WALKS INTO A PET STORE AND ASKS FOR A POLAR BEAR
surprisingly the store has one for sale. But the assistant warns the man: “Do never, under any circumstances, tickle the bear behind the ears.” Of course, the man buys the bear and cheerfully takes it home. After a while he can’t help the urge any more and tickles the bear behind the ears. With a wild roar the polar bear lunges at the man, who runs away in great fear. The bear chases him through the whole house, down the stairs, into the kitchen and around the table, where he finally catches up to the man, pats him on the back and says: “Tag, you’re it!”

A Ukrainian farmer had a son who wanted to go to university “Son, you not want to go university; stay here and work with me on farm” “No father. WHO HAS BETTER FRIENDS
A husband and wife are having a friendly debate one night, centered on the topic of who has better friends. They each offer a wide variety of anecdotes and stories, but in the end, they decide to put it to the test. “Here’s what we’ll do,” the wife suggests. “I’ll call your friends, and you call mine. We’ll both pretend that the other person hasn’t come home yet, and that we’re worried. Whoever’s friends give the best advice about where to find us clearly know us better, and therefore are better.” The husband agrees to the game, and they both head off into separate rooms. When they reconvene a half an hour later, the husband looks defeated. “Okay, honey,” he says, “I think it’s pretty clear that you have better friends. Every one of them listed each of your favorite restaurants, salons, shops, and art galleries, and they had phone numbers for each of them. They knew your work hours by heart, your office extension, your boss’s name, and even the route that you take home.” The wife shakes her head. “No, dear,” she replies, “you have better friends.” “Why do you say that?” asks the husband. “Well,” the wife replies, “most of them said that you’d been at their place, and three of them said that you were still there.”

TORQUING CARS! THE BEST BRAND NEW CAR IS AN ELECTRIC KIA: KOREAN BRAND’S FAMILY-FRIENDLY E-NIRO NAMED CAR OF THE YEAR
An electric family car has for the first time been crowned the best in Britain in the motor industry’s Oscars. The economically-priced and practical Kia e-Niro from Korea became the first pure battery powered car – and the first Korean car – ever to win the prestigious Car of the Year Award by consumer magazine and website What Car?. The fully-charged zero-emissions Kia beat 23 other category winners – including petrol, diesel and hybrid rivals - to take the overall title. It was also named best all-electric car in its category at the annual awards held at Grosvenor House in London’s Park Lane on Tuesday evening. But it was a largely British-free line up of stars with Jaguar Land Rover, Mini, Bentley, Rolls-Royce and Lotus among those missing from the gongs. Honda’s Civic - built in Swindon was the closest thing to a UK winner, with fellow British-based Japanese manufacturers Nissan and Toyota also missing out. What Car judges noted: ‘Victory for the e-Niro, which has a Real Range of 253 miles, also represents the first time Kia has taken the top prize at the ceremony. The success for an electric car comes at the beginning of a big year for the electric vehicle market, with several major manufacturers, including Audi, Honda and Mercedes-Benz, all planning to launch new electric models in 2019.’ What Car? editor Steve Huntingford added: ‘The demand for electric cars has grown exponentially in recent years, and 2019 is shaping up to be the biggest year yet. ‘Most of the leading manufacturers have plans for new electric vehicle and the fact that the Kia e-Niro was able to beat all its petrol and diesel rivals to win the 2019 What Car? Car of the Year Award shows how far this technology has developed.
CAR ADVICE WITH HONEST JOHN – YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED HIGH SOCIETY
I have owned my BMW 535i for three years from new. I have always used the ordinary grade Shell unleaded petrol, not the upgraded blend. The car runs superbly, but do you think I should have been using the supposedly superior petrol from the start? DB HJ Says .. You’ll get up to 10 per cent more power at the top end and more torque at low revs if you use Shell V-Power 99 superunleaded. It also contains additives to lubricate and clean your engine’s fuel system. The difference should be noticeable.
SECOND REFERENDUM
Before Brexit happens, I will be returning from Europe to live in the UK and would like to bring my left-hand-drive BMW 218d with me. I have been told that to register the car with British plates, I will have to adjust the headlights and speedometer. Can you tell me whether new UKspec lights and speedometer need to be fitted, or can the existing components be adjusted? Moreover, will I have to pay VAT? I bought the car new almost four years ago. TA HJ Says: If VAT was paid on the original purchase in the EU country and you have the invoice, then there’s nothing further to pay. There’s no import tax due, either. Yes, lights will need to be changed and the car tested.
STICK OR TWISTED?
Am I crazy to consider replacing my Mercedes with an eight-year old Aston Martin? RS HJ Says : Yes. They can be money pits. Give me an AMG Mercedes GTS any day.
WHAT CAR IS GOOD FOR HIGH MILEAGES?
My 2007 Vectra has now covered 245,000 miles with problems confined to the dual flywheel. The clutch can’t last forever and the engine, which has only had a new battery (this autumn) must have a finite life. Even the exhaust is original. But what should be its replacement? HJ says: The best longevity story for an ordinary car that I have heard of was the 400,000 mile Peugeot 406 2.0 HDi that used to take me to and from the airport. I had a reader with a 250,000 mile 2007 Passat 2.0 TDI yesterday. Usually, to get there, these cars have been well maintained with oil changes at least every 10,000 miles. Doesn’t mean they will all do this sort of mileage. 400k + seems to be most common with Toyota Prius these days and avoids the problems with SCR systems and DPFs common on late model diesels.

KNOW YOUR RIGHTS: CONSUMER RIGHTS DURING SALES Question What are my consumer rights when I buy something in the sales? Can I return sales items? Answer Your consumer rights during a sale are exactly the same as at any other time of the year. Your rights do not change just because you bought the item in a sale. Goods should be of merchantable quality, fit for their intended purpose and as described. If they are not, you are entitled to a repair, replacement or refund. If you are entitled to a refund because there is a fault with goods that you bought at full price, you should be refunded the amount you paid even if they are now on sale at a reduced price. Shop notices such as “No Refunds” or “No Exchanges” do not limit your rights, if you have a complaint about faulty items. Some shops display these notices, particularly during the sales, but this does not take away your rights under consumer protection law if the goods are faulty. However, you are not entitled to a refund because you change your mind about something you have bought in a shop, whether this is during the sales or at any other time of the year. Many shops do allow you to exchange goods that you have had second thoughts about, but this is at their discretion. It is a good idea to check the shop’s refund policy before buying anything. If you buy goods at full price but change your mind about them, and they are now on sale at a lower price, you may only be offered the reduced amount (if the shop is willing to offer a refund). You should always keep your receipts as proof of purchase and the price paid. This doesn’t necessarily have to be the shop receipt. You could show your credit or debit card statement (if you used one) or other documentation that proves it was purchased. For more information, visit the website of the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission at ccpc.ie.

GREAT START TO THE LEAGUES: If Kerry GAA fans were making New Year’s wishes a few week ago then having both the hurlers and footballers winning their opening League games is one that came through. The hurlers made the long trip to Antrim a winning one and if they can beat Westmeath in Austin Stacks Park this Sunday, throwing in at 2pm, they will already have gone along way to securing their Division status. It won’t be easy as Westmeath are a very tough side but hopefully with a large crowd in Tralee the hurlers can prevail. For the footballers under Peter Keane it was also a great day. They welcomed Tyrone to Killarney and from the start were well up for the game with a plan that certainly worked. On the attack Kerry were also very productive. It was thought that Tyrone’s games in the McKenna Cup would have stood to them but it was Kerry that looked the better prepared side. Like the hurlers if the footballers can go two for two with a win away to Cavan this Sunday it will be a great start to the League and will set up a huge game in Tralee when Dublin come to town in a few weeks. Last Sunday there were nearly 13,000 in Killarney and the Dublin game is already sol-out which will certainly prove a nice early 2019 present to the treasurer. KERINS O’RAHILLYS NEWS: Over 300 people took part in the Kerins O’Rahillys’ 10k/5k run and walk which was held on Sunday last and was a great success again this year. The event, now in its fifth year, honoured well-known clubman Francie Quill whose contribution was truly recognised by the big turnout. The club would like to thank all those who participated, along with those who supported, planned and organised a truly enjoyable day Friday 1st February 2019
in Strand Road. The event was in held in association with PRO-PLAN Property Management Ltd and is an important fundraiser for the club. The club have some big games this weekend with the Tralee Town Board Senior League game against Na Gaeil set for 12.30pm at home. In the Minor League on the same day the Minors are away to Ballymac from 3pm. In the Junior League the proposed throw against Austin Stacks is set for 12.30 on Sunday. Training for the under-age girls teams continues at the normal times this week as do the minors and Juniors. There was a big attendance at the Girls AGM with the players, coaches, parents and supporters were thanked for all their effort, hard work and support throughout 2018. The grounds men were also praised for their work as were all the volunteers. The club is now recruiting for players for the coming years. The Juvenile Academy members will be back next week with the training starting on Sunday February 10th in the Sports Complex from 11 to 1pm. New members are always welcome. The coaches held a very informative workshop hosted by Mike Quirke and are all ready for the season ahead. The club was delighted to see Gavin O’Brien make his Kerry debut in the win over Tyrone last Sunday. It was a good week for Gavin as he was also part of the CIT team that won in the Sigerson during the week. Senior player Jack Savage was in form for the IT Tralee in their big win over IT Sligo which saw the Kerry college secure a Round 3 encounter with St Mary’s College Belfast. ST PAT’S NEWS: There was no winner for the Lotto from the numbers drawn 2,7,9 and 26 and the next Jackpot will be e4,400 with the draw in Keane’s Bar. Juvenile Academy: The u6’s put in another great effort with some of the senior players giving some great pointers. The Player of the Week was Noah Fealy. The u8’s were also training hard last Sunday with their coaches very impressed and they train again this Sunday in Cumann Ioseaf from 10am. The u10’s are training in the same venue as they continue to develop their skills while the u12’s really enjoyed their session with Kerry minor manager James Costello. Daniel Sheehy and Liam O’Connor
were the standout players but everyone put in a great effort. They are indoors again this Sunday from 11am. Nicola Hayes, Tracey Corkery and Caroline Houston who will look after the administrative side of things as well as Padraig Hayes, Paul Kelliher and Mark Houston will oversee the u14’s training an d administration. The Seniors are in action this Sunday in Round 3 of the Lee Strand St Brendan’s Board League when the face Churchill in Blennerville at 2pm. Tickets are going well for the celebration in the Rose Hotel on February 16th for what will be a special night for the club. BALLYMAC NEWS The Senior Team are set to play Ardfert in the next round of the St Brendan’s Board Senior League with the game at home on Sunday at 12 noon. This weekend is the opening round of the Minor season with the first round of the Tralee League. The minors are set to play Kerins O’Rahillys with the time not finalised at the time of going to print. The club is delighted to see two players making county juvenile panels - Roisin Rahilly u-14 county panel and Cora Savage u-16 county panel we are delighted for both girls and we hope that they will be successful in their journey with the county teams. Also Congratulations to our Senior Player Robin White, who this week, was called up as a sub goalkeeper on the Kerry Ladies Senior Panel. This is a great honour for our Club and Robin will be an inspiration for all the other girls in the Club. Lotto; There was no winner of the lotto from the numbers drawn 11,17,20 and 22 with the next Jackpot being e8200. Ballymac GAA Strictly Love Dancing: As this year’s show has come to a close we want to thank our fantastic committee for organising such a fantastic show which was a sell out again this year. The judges, MC Andrew Morriseey and show producer Joe Burkett all did a great job. The club is very thankful to all the sponsors who came on board and of course there would be no show without the dancers. Everyone did a great job and congratulations to the winning dancers Diarmuid Lynch, Julie Deane, Katelynn Galvin and James O’Mahoney. Ballymacelligott GAA Club will hold an Open Club gathering for everyone in the Parish on February 8th at 7.30pm in Ballygarry House Hotel. PARNELLS’S LOOKING FOR NEW MEMBERS TO JOIN OUR INTERMEDIATE TEAM: Following the granting of full status to Parnells by the Kerry GAA County Board the club is now looking for new members. They are open to hurlers from Kerry and those from outside the county who are living or working in Tralee to join the u21 players already in the squad. SCOR: The Scor na bPaisti for primary schools Tralee area final will take place on Wednesday on March 13th in Gaelscoil Mhic Easmainn. The Tralee finals of Senior Scor were on in Na Gaeil this week with the winners going on to the County Finals in Moyvane on Friday February 8th starting at 8.30pm. WINS AND LOSSES FOR MOUNTHAWK: In football Mercy Mounthawk has qualified for the semi-final of the Frewen Cup after a fine win over PCD. But they were not as successful on the basketball court as they lost out in the All Ireland u16 A Boys semi-final and then in the League quarter finals. However to reach the All Ireland final was a great achievement for
the John Dowling coached side. The school has certainly enhanced its reputation as one of the hotbeds of schools basketball this season. BUSY TIME ON THE DOGGY FRONT: At the Kingdom Greyhound Stadium this Friday night there are the semi-finals of the Kingdom Novice 325 yards plus the semifinals of the Novice 750 yards. Tralee’s John Liston was second in the co-drivers section while Ger O’Brien won the two-wheeled title. It was a good year for Kerry rally competitors and they are all looking forward to the new season. NEW WARRIOR SET FOR WEEKEND DEBUT: Garvey’s Tralee Warriors have signed Ken (Kendall) Williams for the remainder of the Super League campaign. Williams, the 6’4’’ guard and graduate of University of New Mexico, comes into the Warriors squad as replacement for leading scorer Jordan Evans who suffered a season-ending knee injury. He arrives with a strong pedigree and the veteran point guard has experience of playing in both the NBA G League and Italian Serie A, as well as in South America. ACTS DAZZLE AT KERRY CAMOGIE STARS IN THEIR EYES The Ballyroe Heights Hotel was the venue for Kerry Camogie ‘Stars In Their Eyes’ on Saturday night. Nine Acts had been practising hard under the watchful eyes of Cassie Leen and Ciara Powell and they did not disappoint their followers. Brendan Fuller of Radio Kerry assumed the role of MC. The night commenced with a performance from the Kerry Camogie Team who wowed the crowd with their skills.
