LEGAL MATTERS CORNER MIRIAM MC GILLICUDDY ANSWERS YOUR LEGAL QUERIES

Students and Renting In our last column we discussed Sophie, a new student in IT Tralee and student working rights. This week we will follow up on that and discuss the hugely important issue of rented accommodation. First off it should be noted that there is no legal requirement for a landlord to provide you with a lease and neither is there an obligation on you to sign a lease if you do not wish to do so and you still have legal rights under the Residential Tenancies Act 2004 and Residential Tenancies (Amendment) Act 2015. If you do decide to sign a lease it cannot take away from your rights under the Equal Status Acts 2004-2015 and the terms of the tenancy cannot be changed during the lease period unless you and the Landlord both agree. Since a lease is legally binding and usually a year you should read it carefully and always get a second opinion on it. It’s very important to note that there is no cooling off period like a consumer rights contract. If for whatever reason you break the lease or do not give proper notice of leaving the property, it does not automatically give your landlord reason to keep your deposit or make deductions from it. They may however seek to cover costs incurred such as re advertising, re-letting costs or lost rent. You should seek evidence of this. A landlord has a right to lessen their losses in re letting their property as soon as possible. You may be asked for certain documentation like your PPS Number, a reference from your current employer, Photo I.D. or a bank statement but you should only hand these over if you are being offered a tenancy. Unfortunately there are some scams out there so a student must be careful when looking to rent, be careful of online ads and only look for a reputable landlord or estate agent. Don’t be rushed in handing over money and DO NOT hand over cash and always insist upon a proper receipt. This should always be done at the property and it’s vital that the keys work and you have proper contact details for the landlord/agent. Always photograph the premises when you go into it as evidence of the state of the premises on letting. Landlords have to maintain their properties to a certain standard. Legal Quip

One advantage of living in the past is that the rents are much cheaper.

Medical Matters BREAST CANCER: REDUCING YOUR RISK By Dr Karen Soffe Breast cancer is the most common female cancer in Ireland. Early diagnosis and better treatment mean the majority of women survive their diagnosis. Breast cancer survival has improved by about 40% over the last 40 years. Eight in ten women diagnosed and treated for breast cancer today are predicted to survive their cancer for at least ten years. To reduce your lifetime risk of developing or dying from Breast cancer you can: 1. Be aware of the risk factors and where possible reduce them 2. Increase your chances of early detection by being familiar with and examining your own breasts and attending your screening mammogram every 2 years if you are between the age of 50 and 66 years old (free from www.breastcheck.ie). Some of the Breast cancer risk factors are beyond our control: • Increasing age (most breast cancers occur in women over 50)

• Family history: Women with a first degree relative (mum, sister, daughter) with breast cancer have an increased risk. Your risk is higher if you have more that one 1st degree relative with breast cancer, a known gene mutation in the family, or family members diagnosed at a younger age (<50 yrs old). If you are in this category, talk to your GP about whether you require extra screening. • Early age at starting menstrual periods (<12) or a late age at menopause (>51) • Not having children or starting a family at a later age However some of the risk factors we can reduce: • Being overweight: Having a Body Mass Index >30 doubles your risk of developing breast cancer. • Smoking: Smoking increases your risk of Breast cancer • Alcohol: drinking more than 7 glasses of wine or more that 6 pints of beer a week increases your risk. • Lack of physical activity: Taking just 2.5 hours of exercise per week reduces your risk of breast cancer. Talk to your GP to establish your risk of breast cancer and what you can do to reduce the risk or detect early cancers.

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... Peter Keane 11/2 To End Dublin’s Run of Dominance

Kerry are the team most likely to deny Dublin five All-Ireland Senior Football titles in a row following the appointment of Peter Keane as their new manager. Keane was ratified as the man to replace Eamonn Fitzmaurice on Monday and will now seek to replicate the success he achieved at minor level, where he guided the Kingdom to three consecutive All-Ireland titles. BoyleSports have chalked Kerry up as 11/2 second favourites to win the AllIreland Senior Football Championship next year with Dublin remaining odds-on

favourites at 1/2 to go all the way to a fifth All-Ireland crown in a row. Keane is 25/1 to win the National League as well as both the Munster and AllIreland Championships.Keane was appointed for a three-year term and he is likely at 1/10 to be in position until at least the end of 2021, while it’s an outside shot at 5/1 that he doesn’t stay as boss until the end of the 2021 Championship Lawrence Lyons, spokesperson for BoyleSports said: “Peter Keane saw a lot of early support for the Kerry job, but he had drifted in the market, so well done to anyone who snapped up

the 9/2 about him getting the nod. He’s got a huge task to prevent Dublin continuing their run, but it hasn’t stopped a few

locals weighing in already on Kerry wrestling Sam Maguire back at 11/2.”

Edmond leaves Strand Road in great shape! (after 23 years) Well known loved and proud groundsman at the Kerins O Rahillys GAA club , Edmond Quirke recently rolled his last sidelines in Strand road . Club Official and good friend Breda Dyland wrote a lovely piece about Edmond on the clubs facebook page Today our Groundsman Edmond left Strand Rd for the last time after looking after, not only our facilities, but man, woman and child for the past 23 years. We often took for granted that things ran smoothly not because that just happens but because of the work being done behind

the scenes. Not only did every team in Strand Rd pass Ed’s watchful eye in 23yrs, but the IT, schools, Kerry, ladies and all visitors too. Everyone knows him as just Edmond.... bit like Bono and Ed knew everyone’s name! He did the bit extra. First in and last to leave!! Words really can’t describe what you have done for the club over the years. Thanks Edmond. We wish you the very best in your new ventures and know that wherever you go they will be very lucky to have you. ...Breda

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... Friends remember Emma Mhic Mhathúna in a special RTÉ RnaG programme Friends and neighbours of Emma Mhic Mhathúna spoke warmly of her in a special edition of An Saol ó Dheas on RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta this week , and told of their shock and sadness at her death. Emma first told her story to Helen Ní Shé on the same programme on 1 May. Phil Uí Bhrosnacháin, post mistress in Baile na nGall until the post office closed its doors there in September, was Emma’s next door neighbour, and spoke of first meeting her. “I remember the first day she walked in here, I’ll never forget it. She had the five kids with her, with her blonde hair and an orange jacket, and I thought to myself who is this beautiful woman ... She told us she was looking for a house, so she put up a sign, and she got a house then next door. That’s my first memory of her.”Phil spoke of the telling quietness over the last few days outside the house. “You’d know when she would

be gone ... there’d be no noise around from the kids playing outside... and for the last few days I didn’t hear the kids playing and I was saying to myself I hope she’s ok, but of course she wasn’t.” “She used to be in and out to us all day and night! I was very fond of her.... and I used to be giving out to her telling her she’d brought the TV cameras on us, and that she had the (village) put upside down, and she’d be laughing.” “She was a wonderful woman, and she did so much for her children, that’s all she was thinking of .. and she was so funny, we’d always have a laugh. She could be in to us five or six times a day, and I’d be saying to her ‘what is it now Emma’ and she’d start laughing.” It was in Phil’s house that Emma did all the television interviews over the last few months. “She was fearless, and she spoke the truth all the time,

Dublin, and then when she’d come back here she’d say I’m home now.” Phil Uí Bhrosnacháin was speaking on An Saol ó Dheas on RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta.

and do you know I never thought this day would come ... she had so much energy, I suppose I just didn’t believe it ... She was very content here ... She used to go up to

And according to Joe Mc Mahon of Scoil Eoin Balloonagh It promises to be a fun-filled week where the students will get the opportunity to engage in many activities in relation to health and fitness. “The World Health Organisation recommends that children should have at least 60 minutes of physical activity everyday. Regular exercise has been shown to Improve academic performance,Reduce feelings of depression and anxiety,

Reduce the risk of obesity and disease & Build and maintain healthy bones and muscle.” says Joe ....”.We have a great week lined up for the children .....Events include Basketball with Tralee Warriors, Dance with Siobhan Daly, Yoga with Sally Ryle, Rugby with Sean Brosnan, Athletics with Tralee Harriers, Soccer with F.A.I. coach Darren Aherne and visits from dentist Ger Hill and nurse Kate Norris who will speak on Basic First Aid for kids. Classes from 3rd to 6th will participate in our walk with a smile on Wednesday 10th October and we ask that children design a poster for Active Week with the theme “Let us Witness your Fitness”. Each class will be provided with mindfulness and well-being activities for the classroom, which will be done daily in school. We will like to thank Deirdre Lyons and Linda Galvin for their hard work in preparing these documents. We would also like to thank you for your support with our healthy lunches policy. We will be continuing with our “Fruit

Budget 2019

Hospitality at A Price

Overview Finance Minister Paschal Donohoeʼs Budget confirmed that ‘Our public finances are balancedʼ which is to be welcomed. However, the VAT Rate rise from 9% to 13.5% for Hospitality services makes it a negative one for Kerry and other areas very dependent on Tourism and Hospitality industries. The change in the 9% VAT is the reversal of a temporary measure which was hugely successful particularly for rural Ireland. It remains to be seen whether its reversal will have the opposite effect of increasing prices, job losses and business closures with Brexit looming over the sector. The other focus of the Budget was Housing with significant resources allocated to Capital Expenditure, emergency accommodation and homeless services which were all as expected.

Summary Main Points

Personal Taxation

The Main Discussion points in the budget were as follows:

• Revised Universal Social Charge Rates · 2% rate increased from €19,372 and €19,874 · 4.75% reduced to 4.5% between €19,874 to €70,044 • Home Carers Tax Credit increased by €300 to €1,500 • Lower Rate Tax Band (20%) increased by €750 to €35,300

• Earned Income (Self Employed) Tax Credit increased by €200 to €1,350 • Home Carer tax credit increased by €300 to €1,500 • Minimum wage increase to €9.80 • Increase in Social Welfare Payments by €5 and return of full Christmas Bonus • Duty on Cigarettes increased by 50c per packet (20) or pro rata • Betting Tax increased from 1% to 2% for Bookmakers

Housing • €1.25bn for 10,000 social Housing • €60m capital expenditure towards emergency accommodation • €30m for homelessness services • €100m Serviced Sites Fund

Social Welfare

• Increase in all Social Welfare payments by €5 • Increase in qualified Child payments • Christmas Bonus Restored

Bexblah Beauty HELLO BEAUTIFUL PEOPLE! I HOPE YOU’RE HAVING AN AMAZING WEEK! This week I’m going to be talking about… hmmm? What to talk about? I find myself struggling what to type right now, I mean? Halloween? AW Makeup? My favourite products? That all seems so done to me. I’ve been writing this page for a few years and yes I love doing it, but do I find myself getting repetitive… OF COURSE. As I was rambling an idea popped into my head. I’m going to talk about people in the Beauty/Makeup industry that I am inspired by… One of these people is Irish, the rest are worldwide names! (I also just got another idea - I will do a version of this but talk about local people next, I already have two insane business ladies I want to talk about, but that’s for another day!) P.LOUISE P.Louise, Paige from Manchester launched her brand in 2014. She got a 20,000 pound loan in 2014 and set up a little makeup studio to take makeup appointments and has now converted that to a multi-million pound business. Her academy provides courses, both in the academy and online and has recently launched a makeup line. She is in the process of building ‘P.Louise HQ’ which has 4 offices, a design studio, filming studio, canteen, lip clinic, 7 classrooms and a model suite. If you check out her instagram @plouise1 you can see it all there! Major inspiration. Oh and I forgot… she’s also only in her mid 20s! KEILIDH CASHELL Literally, in my opinion, the biggest name in the Irish Beauty Industry. Keilidh is the face

of Irish Beauty when it comes to Instagram and YouTube. She started as a Makeup Artist and now works with huge brands such as Benefit and Nars, she has a 300k following on Instagram and it’s no secret why - her talent is INSANE. Unlike a lot of other Irish ‘mua’s’, Keilidh is VERY selective with the work she does and the brands she associates herself with. I was lucky enough to meet her in person and spend time with her in London and let me tell you, she is exactly how she appears online, no bullsh*t, positive vibes and works verrrrrry hard at what she does. KYLIE JENNER Some of you mightn’t agree with me on this one, buuuuut, this is my opinion piece, not yours! HA. Yes she comes from a very wealthy and privileged background. But so do a lot of other people and you don’t see them about to be the world’s youngest selfmade billionaire now do you? Say what you want but it takes talent to make a business out of your own name. She comes from a privileged family, she doesn’t need to work as hard as she does and build her brand and business. Her brand, Kylie Cosmetics has sold over $600 million dollars worth of makeup since launching in 2015. She’s 21. TWENTY ONE!

JAMES CHARLES A 21 year old, self taught makeup artist and YouTuber, who recently bought his first home in LA and just did a video with Kylie Jenner to promote her Halloween collection, James Charles is 100% one of the most hard working YouTubers out there. Always coming up with new video ideas and makeup looks. He is SO creative and business savvy. He knows what he’s at folks. JEFFREE STAR Now onto this absolute mogul. Jeffree Star, used to be very controversial and a lot of people love to hate him. After watching the Shane Dawson series on Youtube: The Secret Life Of Jeffree Star, I was in AWE. Other than being one of the top Beauty YouTubers, he owns Jeffree Star Cosmetics, as well as many production warehouses in LA. He is a very smart business man and is a huge inspiration to me. As you can see from this list, all of the above people are at the top of their game, work hard and are all young entrepreneurs who have made a career out of their own name. Very impressive in my opinion.

Rebecca

BEXBLAH

FITNESS!

HELLO EVERYONE! Hope you’re all having a great week! Fasted cardio is basically doing cardio first thing in the morning before you eat anything. It is good for people who want a lot of fat loss as it burns extra fat. I try to do fasted cardio once or twice a week just to change things up for my body.

cardio can do for you.

SET A GOAL!

To achieve something, whatever it is in life, you must set a goal for yourself. With fitness it is always good to be working towards something. Being stronger, running faster, jumping higher, losing bodyfat whatever it may be! If you are going to the gym and you don’t have a goal you may find yourself slacking or not training as hard as you could be. because you’re not really training towards anything.

FIND A BUDDY!

So the big question is, why does fasted cardio work? In simple terms, fasted cardio works because when you are exercising first thing in the morning the energy that is used during your cardio will come from the breaking down of fat that you already have. Since you have not eaten, this is your body’s only available energy source. When you eat before your cardio, your body’s first energy source will be the food that you have consumed. For this reason, fasted cardio is often used to lose those last few pounds that you just can’t get rid of.

or relaxing and chilling out!

Having a gym buddy can really help when it comes to fitness. You know those days when you’re just not motivated? If you have someone else who motivates you and makes going to the gym/working out that much more enjoyable you’re more likely to go and do it. Turn training into something social, get your work done in the gym and then do something fun afterwards like shopping, going for a post workout feed

DO A CLASS!

Some people, no matter how hard they try, don’t push themselves in the gym enough on their own. This is where classes come in. You have the instructor pushing you and telling you exactly what to do, the class is a set amount of time, you go in do the class and you’re done! Boom. There are so many different classes on all of the time, from spinning to strength training to boot camps, all the options are there if you’re ‘not a gym person’.

Rebecca You can find me on Facebook ‘Bexblah Makeup’ or Instagram ‘Bexblah’.

While expert opinions are still indecisive about whether or not fasted cardio is worth it or not, I really believe it is something that you have to try for yourself. Every body is different and each person’s body will react differently. So I challenge you to give it a try and you may just be surprised what fasted 24

HEALTHY RECIPES for 2018

When the weather starts getting cooler and the leaves turn from green to red, you’ll likely be craving warm soups, hearty pastas & stews

BRISKET WITH SWEET AND SOUR ONIONS INGREDIENTS • • • • • • • • • •

One 5-pound brisket, preferably
first cut
 Sea salt Pepper
4 onions, sliced into 1/4-inch-thick rings
 1/4 cup ketchup
 2 tablespoons tomato paste
 1 tablespoon soy sauce
 1 tablespoon dark brown sugar
 4 garlic cloves, minced
 Small coriander sprigs, for garnish

METHOD Preheat the oven to 120°. Season the brisket generously with salt and pepper. In a large enameled cast-iron casserole, spread the onions in a single layer and lay the brisket on top. In a small bowl, whisk the ketchup with the tomato paste, soy sauce, brown sugar and garlic. Spread the sauce all over the brisket. Cover the casserole and transfer
to the oven. Braise the brisket for about 3 hours, until the meat is very tender. Uncover and continue cooking for 1 hour, until the sauce has thickened. Let
the brisket cool slightly in the sauce for
30 minutes. Transfer the brisket to a work surface and slice across the grain. Arrange the slices on a platter and spoon some of the sauce over the top. Garnish with coriander and serve with the remaining sauce on the side.

TORQUING CARS! CLASSIC VW BEETLE GETS ELECTRIC POWER

Given the huge number of electric mobility solutions and ‘green’ propulsion firms in Hall 2 at the Paris motor show, the French are embracing low-emissions transport in general and electrification in particular far more readily than the UK is. Must be all that ‘cheap’ nuclear power. Anyway, that’s a convoluted way of introducing a classic VW Beetle that’s been converted to electric propulsion, with battery packs in the boot at the front and just below the rear parcel shelf, with an electric motor at the back driving the rear wheels. The base car is a restored Beetle 1302 from 1971 and it’s actually a prototype, as French regulations render it illegal on public roads. With 37 lithium-ion cells it has 39kW of power and the claimed range is about 250 kilometres (155 miles). The top speed is said to be 250kmh (almost 100mph), which is going some for an old Beetle. Unusually for an electric car, it uses the standard Beetle’s four-speed gearbox. There’s also a regenerative function, using the electric motor rather than harnessing braking energy. The execution is first-rate, and you can’t argue with the creator’s logic that it’s more energy-efficient to convert existing cars to batter propulsion rather than creating new cars. It’s also rather more fun than mainstream electric cars. The Beetle’s creator Brouzils Auto, which specialises in old VWs at its base just south of Nantes in the west of France, can also perform the conversion on VW Combi vans/campers, the Beetle-based Karmann Ghia and certain older Porsches. They need to get a distributor in the UK, where such conversions are legal because of our peculiar low-volume type approval regulations, which mean that it’s possible to create a road-legal, fully electric Morris Minor, for instance.

JAGUAR LAND ROVER FACTORY TO CLOSE FOR TWO WEEKS

JLR’s Solihull plant will close for two weeks at end of the month; falling sales and weakening global demand blamed Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) has announced its Solihull plant will close for two weeks at the end of October as the company attempts to rein in profitability in the face of falling sales. The news comes less than one month after staff at Jaguar’s Castle Bromwich plant were put on a three-day working week. The Solihull factory, which is home to Range Rover Sport, Jaguar XE and F-Pace, recently received a £1.5 billion investment from JLR, and the shutdown is being implemented as the company attempts to make “operational efficiencies”. Staff at the plant will continue to be paid during the shutdown. Short-term factory closures can be hugely expensive to implement and are reluctantly undertaken as a result, but Jaguar Land Rover has been battered by two significant headwinds in recent months. Brexit uncertainties have led its chief executive, Ralf Speth, to warn “tens of thousands” of job losses may occur if the UK crashes out of the EU without a trade deal. The recent downturn in the popularity of diesel engines, meanwhile, is also believed to have hit the company .Perhaps more serious - at least with regard to this latest production slowdown - is the 46 per cent fall in demand JLR experienced in China last month. Customers in the company’s largest market had been presumed to be holding back from car purchases until vehicle import tariffs were reduced from 25 per cent to 15 per cent by Beijing on July 1, but the expected retail bounce-back has so far failed to materialise.

NEW SMART ROAD STUDS WITH LED LIGHTS DEBUT AT UK ROAD JUNCTION

New LED road studs have been installed at one of the UK’s busiest motorway junctions. Highways England fitted 175 of the lights – visible from 900 metres away – at the Switch Island motorway junction in Merseyside to prevent cars from drifting out of their lanes at the traffic lights. A network of cables under the road links the studs to the traffic lights via a nearby control unit, automatically switching the LEDs on as soon as the traffic signal goes green. While Switch Island is the first junction to be fitted with new LED road studs connected to traffic lights, the Hindhead Tunnel in Surrey is already using them to guide drivers safely from one end to the other. The lights – which are similar to those found on an airport runway – were implemented at Switch Island as part of a £3 million project to improve safety at the junction

FIRST EVER FORD MONDEO HYBRID ESTATE ON THE WAY

The Ford Mondeo range will expand in 2019 to include a Hybrid Estate model. The news was announced on social media by the brand’s European boss this week. Now it looks like the range will be expanded to include a Hybrid Estate for the very first time.Ford of Europe & MEA chairman & CEO, Steven Armstrong said on Twitter: “Excited to announce our plans to launch a new generation of Mondeo Hybrid Models in 2019, which will include our first Mondeo Hybrid Wagon.” The Mondeo Hybrid will use the same 184bhp 2.0-litre petrol-electric hybrid set-up as the existing Saloon variant. It’ll get the same regenerative braking set-up, too, which Ford claims can capture “up to 90 per cent of the energy normally lost during braking” to feed power back to the battery.Ford says the new Mondeo Hybrid Estate will “enable customers who require greater load-carrying capability to benefit from the efficiency and refinement of an electric powertrain in many driving scenarios.”Ford of Europe’s vice president for marketing, sales and service, Roelant de Waard, said: “For many customers the practicality offered by a wagon body style is an absolute must. From next year those drivers will also be able to reduce their fuel bills using the sophisticated petrol-electric powertrain of our new Mondeo Hybrid wagon.“Electrified powertrains will continue to play a key role in [Ford’s] European product line-up,” he said. “Ford is investing $11 billion (£77m) and plans to deliver 16 fully electric vehicles within a global portfolio of 40 electrified vehicles through 2022.” 30

IT’S ONLY A JOKE MAURICE AND THE DOCTOR

Maurice was a very old man went to the doctor for his physical. A few days later the doctor saw Maurice walking down the street with a gorgeous young lady on his arm. A couple of weeks later when Maurice saw the doctor again, he spoke to Maurice and said, “You’re really doing great, aren’t you?” Maurice replied, “Just doing what you said, Doc: “Get a hot mamma and be cheerful.” The doctor said, “I did not say that. I said, “You got a heart murmur. Be careful.”

I’VE BEEN HAPPILY MARRIED FOR TEN WHOLE YEARS. And ten out of thirty isn’t bad.

A WOMAN SENT TWO TIES TO HER SON IN LAW.

Some weeks later, she invited him and her daughter over for dinner and in an attempt to impress his mother-in-law, the son-in-law wore one of the ties she’d sent him. The meal was extremely tense and uncomfortable with the mother-in-law maintaining a stony silence. Finally she spoke, “Alright then, what was wrong with the other tie?”

THE LOCAL NEWS STATION WAS INTERVIEWING AN 80-YEAR OLD WOMAN BECAUSE SHE HAD JUST GOTTEN MARRIED FOR THE 4TH TIME IN HER LIFE. The interviewer was asking her questions about her life, about what it felt like to be marrying again at 80, and then about her new husband’s occupation. The lady tells him that her new husband is a funeral director. “Interesting,” the newsman thinks.... He then asks her if she wouldn’t mind telling him a little bit about her first three husbands and what they did for a living. She then pauses for a few moments, needing some time to reflect on all of those years. After a short time, a smile comes to her face as she answers proudly, explaining to the newsman that she had remembered each of her husbands. The first, she says, was a banker, whom she married in her 20s. In her 40s, she married a circus ringmaster. In her 60s, she married a preacher, and now, in her 80s, she’s marrying a funeral director. The newsman is astonished at this development, having never met anybody who had been in so many relationships with so many different and diverse careers. He asks her why, if there was any reason, did she choose to marry those specific people. She responds, “I married one for the money, two for the show. Three to get ready, and four to go!”

TALKING SPORT WITH THE TRALEE ADVERTISER EVERYTHING’S COMING UP ROSES! Caragh Dawson (Dublin), Patrice Diggin (Kerry). Players who are members of an inter-county panel, participating in this year’s Championship will now be invited to vote on their Player of the Year based on the final shortlists by October 17th. The Awards will take place on November 3rd in Dublin.

with “The Voice” Pat Harnett

FAI NATIONAl P.R.O. OF THE YEAR PETER THE MAN TO DO THE BUSINESS: So after all the speculation where certain people were odds on to get the Kerry management job and then were totally out of the running the man – or more precisely the team – to lead the county over the next few years has been named. Peter Keane steps up from a hugely successful run as the Minor manager and has been given a three year term. The much talked about back-room team is made up of Tommy Griffin and James Foley who both have been part of Peter’s inner circle for the three minor wins, Donie Buckley and Maurice Fitzgerald. The process was a little unusual in that all the names in the frame would probably have been acceptable to the Kerry fans and very few counties would have the calibre of candidates that the selection committee had to choose from. In Peter they have a manager that has certainly proved he knows how to win both in his business and sporting lives. He has an in depth knowledge of the playing pool in the county and should have no problem with the players buying into his philosophy. Peter will also be well aware that the Kerry manager’s position is not just a one man job. And during his time with the minors Peter certainly left no stone unturned in this area as he has a top level backroom team. Both will know their roles and what Peter wants from them and all three know they can trust each other 100% and this dynamic has certainly proved to be one the brings success. The fact the two of them have come on board with him will certainly help with the step up to the top level. One of the keys to the success of this management team will be how Peter and Donie Buckley gel together. Donie comes with a big reputation as a coach having worked with Mayo and others at the highest level. The Castleisland native was always on the County Boards radar. As the trainer he must have been happy with Peter’s plans – no doubt the two have had plenty of behind the scenes talks. In any management team having a person who is top quality at their job but ‘knows their place’ is a recipe for

36

success. And that in no way is meant to play down what Donie brings to the table. But looking at another code and take one of the most successful sides in soccer – Manchester United under Alex Ferguson. Could many name who were the trainers he worked with. No but rest assured Alex was not doing all the work on the training ground with the players. For his coaches they knew he was the front man and the boss man but for them the reward was working with some of the best players in the world and winning trophies. I am sure for Donie the decision to join Kerry was something similar. He knows that while Kerry are in transition there is a huge depth of talent available to the new set-up. And the draw to work with this talent was too much to turn down. Maurice Fitzgerald was touted for a while are getting the job himself. But the fact that he has a new high pressure job and also is probably still learning the management trade at the highest level probably meant that staying on as a selector is the right move. For many Fitzgerald was not used to his optimum under Eamonn Fitzmaurice. He spent much of the time in the stands. I would think that with this set-up he will be much more visible on the line. Opposition players know of Fitzgerald’s skills and if he can impart some of these to the players, especially the new players in the squad then they could strike fear into the hearts of defences. So overall these have been a very positive reaction to the manager and his management team. Hopefully they will now be given the room they need to bring their style of play to the team. With the high profile retirements and maybe one or two more to come there will be a bit of rebuilding to be done. But the players are certainly there. The League campaign will give a good indication of the way the new management want the team to play. We all wish them well. The other issue now is who will take on the Minor management role? I would expect Jack O’Connor to stay with the u20’s and Pat O’Shea has a new job with Munster GAA. Some names that will probably be in County Friday 12th October 2018

Chairman Tim Murphy’s mind will be Seamus Moynihan, Diarmuid Murphy, Declan O’Sullivan or Sean O’Sullivan or maybe they will look to the colleges set-up where Kerry have lots of success over the past decade. It certainly is a plum job for a coach with aspirations but it does come with the pressure of continuing the unbeaten run that has led to the five in a row, WILL PETER’S FIRST CAPTAIN BE FROM TRALEE: Kerins O’Rahillys players and management can be forgiven this week if they do not want to hear the words ‘back door’! And the other sporting adage that they won’t want to hear is that you only beat the ‘big teams’ once. Rahillys will see themselves as a big team and will have taken great confidence from their 3-18 to 2-17 win over Dr Crokes in Round 2A of the Garvey’s Senior County Championship. However both teams will know that this is a totally different game and past encounters will not have any bearing on the outcome on Sunday when they two side meets at 3.45 in Austin Stack Park. One of the big strengths of the Tralee side is their ability to get goals and have put up big scores in all three games – hitting 3-15, 3-18 and 3-11. In defence they have only conceded three goals in a total of 57 points that they have given up in total. So can Kerin’s O’Rahillys do it again and reach the decider against either Dingle or East Kerry? Definitely they can and it will be great for the town if they do. Even the Austin Stacks fans would be cheering them on that day!! DIGGIN ON THE PLAYER OF THE YEAR SHORT LIST: The shortlists for the fourth Camogie Association/WGPA Players’ Player of the Year Awards, sponsored by Liberty Insurance have been announced across the three award categories. The Players’ Player of the Year Awards honour the outstanding achievement of an individual player in the Senior, Intermediate and Premier Junior Championships. Junior Player of the Year Shortlist: Deirdre Johnstone (Dublin),

BALLYMAC NEWS: There was no winner of the Lotto from the numbers drawn 2,11,21 and 24 and the next Jackpot will be e6,800. The u10 boys enjoyed taking part in the Siobhan Cotter Blitz in Churchill recording two good wins over Churchill and Austin Stacks but they went down to John Mitchels in the final. The u9’s played the same clubs and they certainly showed how much they have improved over the season. The club would like to thank Churchill for the invitation. Next Sunday morning sees the last day of academy when they welcome Kilcummin for challenge games. It is hoped that Kilcummin’s winning Minor captain Paul O’Shea will attend along with the Tommy Markham Cup. Of course Paul is no stranger to Ballymac as his father Tom has given many years of service to the Club and is currently a selector with our Senior team. Academy Medals Awards next Sunday: With the season coming to an end the thoughts turn to the Medals for the Academy players. These will be presented during the session this Sunday. The club thanks all the players, parents and managers for their commitment during the year. The u15’s were in Super 10 action in Castleisland during the week while the u16’s saw off Rahillys 4-21 to 4-15 and play their last game at home to Churchill this Sunday. BALLYMAC NEWS: There was no winner of the Lotto from the numbers drawn 5,7,11 and 23 and the next jackpot will be e2,800 with the draw in Skelper Quanes. In the Juveniles there was a smaller number of under 6’s in action as the older ones have now moved up to the u8’s. Well done to all with Cillian Enright being named Player of the Week. There are only 2 weeks left of the Academy with the possibility of a surprise visit to the last one. The u8’s had a great turn-out boosted by the new players. They ended the session with a game where all the players showed their skills and it ended in a draw. Blake Bowler was named Player of the Week in a week where it was hotly contested. The Academy continues for two more weeks from 10.30am on Sundays. U10: Our U10’s resumed training last Sunday morning with a good turnout. Well done to the kids who attended. Training resumes this Sunday at 10.30am as there are only a few Sundays left, it is important that all turn up for

There was no winner of the Lotto from the numbers drawn 2,6,13 and 19. DEMON’S DOWNED ON THEIR HOME COURT BY WARRIORS: Men’s Super League: UCC Demons 75 Garvey’s Tralee Warriors 84 Garvey’s Tralee Warriors finally laid their Leeside demons to rest by overcoming their keen Cork based rivals in an entertaining Super League duel in the Mardyke Arena last Friday night. The Warriors held the upper hand throughout but despite leading at the end of all four quarters had to battle all the way to prevail by nine points in the end. The home side were quickest

into gear with Girts Lazdans, Colin O’Reilly and Kyle Hosford on the mark to give the Demons an early 6-0 lead. Eoin Quigley got Warriors on the board but a Hosford three helped push the Demons lead out to 11-2. Warriors then found their rhythm and range with Darragh O’Hanlon launching two huge threes and when Paul Dick followed up with another the visitors wrestled the lead back. Kieran Donaghy got to the Demons board to score before O’Hanlon’s accuracy from inside and out more than offset an O’Reilly three for Demons and Warriors led 21-19 at quarter time. Dusan Bogdanovic opened his account with a double early in the second and when Paul Dick and Jordan Evans drilled two huge threes and Evans hit two from the line the Warriors cut loose to lead by 9. Hosford, Carlton Cuff and O’Reilly reduced the deficit to four before Quigley bossed the Demons defence to land from close range. Brandon Watts and Hosford then both converted before baskets from Cuff and O’Reilly brought the home side right back into the contest. Another outstanding long distance effort from the unerring O’Hanlon provided the three points that Warriors led by at half time – 40 to 37. In a hugely entertaining third quarter the Warriors got off to a great start with Darragh O’Hanlon’s hot streak continuing as he yet again hit nothing but net from outside. Jordan Evans followed suit and when Quigley produced two stunning back-to-back scores the Warriors advantage was out to 10. Hosford, O’Reilly and Cuff edged the Cork side closer but the Warriors sensed their time to finally win at the home of the Demons might have arrived when scores from Evans, efforts from inside and out by Paul Dick and a fine team play finished off by Donaghy maintained the visitors lead. A three from Watts and a lay-up from Cuff were cancelled out by scores from Paul Dick and Bogdanovic and the Warriors took a 66-60 advantage into the final quarter. In a breathless and at times chaotic final quarter the Demons showed just why they are so hard to beat at home and matched the Warriors score for score early in the fourth. O’Hanlon continued to torment his old club with another score and Janis Dumburs followed that with a big three but Hosford replied in kind and when Cuff and Watts also in range the gap remained at 6. Donaghy then produced a couple of hugely influential minutes to score at one end and show all his defensive experience to reject the advances of both Watts and Cuff under the board. He immediately produced another typical drive to score but Carlton Cuff converted two from the line to leave just four between the sides with the winning line in clear view. O’Hanlon yet again hit the mark and when Donaghy calmly drained two free

throws the Warriors were ready to celebrate a memorable win. Quigley capped an outstanding personal performance with two free throws of his own in the final seconds to seal the deal. After last week’s surprise defeat to Killorglin this result goes a long way to getting the Warriors Super League campaign back on track. Top scorers: Garvey’s Tralee Warriors: Darragh O’Hanlon 18, Paul Dick 17, Jordan Evans 15 UCC Demons: Kyle Hosford 22, Carlton Cuff 18, Brandon Watts and Colin O’Reilly 15 each Next up for the Garvey’s Tralee Warriors is an away trip to face DCU Saints in the DCU Complex on this Saturday with a 7.00pm tip off. This is a reversed fixture as the work on the new floor is still on-going in the Complex. It will be great to see the new timber surface in a few weeks. SOCCER STORIES: Inter League Season ends for the 15’s and 17’s: The Kerry u15’s ended their LoI season with an impressive 3-2 over Cavan / Monaghan. They have been competitive all season and with a little luck they could have been in contention for a trophy. The 17’s finished with a frustrating 4-3 loss to Limerick FC at Mounthawk Park. This was a game they could have and probably have won but a combination of not finishing and some calls that might have gone the other way saw them lose by the odd goal in nine. Credit must go to the full squad and management who never threw in the towel in a season that kept kicking them. Their dedication to wearing the Kerry jersey in the League of Ireland is a credit to all. Locally the draw for the next round of the FAI Junior Cup has pitted Tralee Dynamos away to Killorglin and The Park going to Shannon Town in Clare. This weekend the highlights are in the Munster Junior Cup with the clash of The Park and Killarney Celtic, fresh from their Munster Champions Trophy win over Janesboro, at Christy Leahy Park on Sunday at 2pm. Tralee Dynamos will be expected to have too much for CG Killarney while Mitchels Avenue and Fenit could be a tight affair. In the FAI U17 Cup first round Dynamos went out at home to Avenue United from Clare. In the Schoolboys League they got their Subway Inter League u13 campaign off to a winning start away to Clare, It was a good weekend for The Park in the National Cup with away wins for their u13’s and u15’s. ON THE GREENS: Castleisland GC – the winners of the Seniors Competition were Jer Long from William O’Sullivan and Johnny Burrows.
