Each Box Makes a huge Difference Scoil Eoin Balloonagh took part in the Team Hope Shoebox Appeal once again this year. Team Hope is an Irish, Christian, International Development Charity working to help children affected by poverty in Eastern Europe and Africa. Last year 270,000 boxes were collected and sent across the world to poor communities including Belarus, Eastern Europe and six countries across Africa. Team Hope delivers the boxes straight into the hands of little boys and girls who are living in bleak conditions in orphanages, street shelters and homes. The shoeboxes are a ‘box of love’ as such and are often the first present these children have ever received.

Every single box makes a huge difference. Each box is different because every child is different. Shoeboxes are given based on need alone and bring joy and excitement to these children living in difficult situations. In Scoil Eoin the project was undertaken by the Student Council with the help of their coordinator Mrs. Carol Anne O’Donoghue. They were overwhelmed with the response and generosity of all the parents and pupils of Scoil Eoin year in year out. Putting a box together is time consuming and expensive so all efforts are greatly appreciated. In total over 356 were collected. In total boxes over 356 were collected. Team Hope representatives

Mick O’Connell collected the boxes this morning. All boxes will shortly be en route to

these children in need. Well done to all involved

Careers Night at Mercy Mounthawk Secondary School - Thursday 17th October 2019

In recent years, Mercy Mounthawk Parents’ Council has placed a special emphasis on supporting our senior-cycle students, as they make subject choices for Leaving Certificate and as they explore the array of third level education courses on offer, taking the next step forward in life. Mercy Mounthawk Parents’ Council is delighted to host its’ annual Careers Night for our senior students on Thursday 17th October. It offers a unique opportunity for our students to gain real insight into a wide variety of careers. Over thirty career specialists have volunteered to speak with the students about the educational pathways, skills requirements, opportunities and challenges in their area of expertise. With an anticipated attendance of over 300 students from the 4th, 5th and

6th year classes a busy night at Mounthawk is expected . Making the wrong course selection is the single biggest reason for students dropping out of College, and this can be a source of great stress for students and their families. “This Careers Initiative is our effort to support our young people in making informed decisions about third level education and careers. " said Kathleen Holmes, member of Mercy Mounthawk Parents’ Council. John O’Roarke, Principal of Mercy Mounthawk commented ‘As an ongoing commitment by the Parents’ Council, in partnership with the Guidance Department in the school, Careers Night is proving to be a tremendous success. It responds to a clear need of the students with regard to identifying their career

path. Feedback received from all participants, both students and parents, comments on the value of first-hand conversations with professionals in careers

KBN Remote Working event in Ballygarry On October 9th KBN (Kerry BusinessWomens Network ) in collaboration with Moving On brought Karen O'Reilly, founder of Employmum and one of Silicon Republic’s ten 'Future of Work' Influencers to Kerry to talk all things Flexible and Remote Working. Karen shared research conducted by her company Employmum which found that the availability of flexible work was listed as the most important factor by women when returning to work, more important than salary. “Flexibility is what people want in the workplace. They want to be treated as adults and trusted to get the job done…….It's time for women

Friday 18th October 2019

to be able to say I really want to work, and I want to be there for my children too" said Karen O’Reilly. “Let's hope Kerry businesses are listening and become leaders in the flexible work revolution by changing the landscape of flexible work in Ireland. Who doesn't want to attract top talent, retain staff, and end the gender pay gap by allowing female employees to grow their careers, rather than having to choose between work or family?” Elin Sorensen added. According to Lisa O’Flaherty from Moving On “We have worked with 150 women over the last three years and 95% them are looking for part time

or flexible work so that they can balance work with caring and other responsibilities. We have found that employers who are willing to be a little flexible, are able to tap into the amazing talent pool of women returners”. From her work with hundreds of businesses, Karen shared the pros of Flexible work for employers and employees and how companies can embrace Flexible and remote working. Following her Masterclass, Karen was joined by Lisa O’Flaherty of Moving On and Colette O’Connor of HQ Listowel for a panel discussion MC’d by Lisa Fingleton of Moving On, where they answered numerous audience questions from 'How to encourage your employer to implement a flexible work policy', to 'How do I properly

Cara Credit Unions & Killarney Credit Union Introduce A New Full-Service Current Account The new Current Account includes the globally accepted Mastercard Debit Card with Contactless Payments, Standing Orders, Direct Debits, and the option of an Overdraft facility.

Members of Killarney Credit Union and Cara Credit Unions can open a Current Account online or in their local Credit Union offices. This is good news for Credit Union members and for consumers in general who have limited choice at present. Credit Unions are seen to offer something different to the major banks in terms of their personal touch and are considered trustworthy. The new Current Account has simple and transparent pricing. A low monthly fee of €4.00 applies and that covers unlimited euro point of sale and contactless transactions, unlimited mobile and online banking and unlimited standing orders and direct debit processing and up to

five euro ATM withdrawals per month. Full details of fees and charges are available on Killarney Credit Union and Cara Credit Unions Websites. Speaking at the launch, Pa Laide, CEO of Cara Credit Union said:

“This is a watershed moment in the credit unions history. It means credit union members with savings and loans will now be able to get a competitive Current Account from their trusted Credit Union, and they will no longer need to go to a bank to get this service. For the first time, we will be able to provide our members with a real choice for their day-to-day financial needs. And this service, which will be accessible globally and digitally, will enable us to become even more relevant to our members in the everincreasing digital world. Speaking to Mark Murphy, CEO of Killarney Credit Union “credit unions have been voted

the 'most trusted financial institution' for many years, and just recently they became the first in the world to receive the coveted the national ‘CX Award for Best Customer Experience in Ireland’ for a record-breaking five years in a row. This trusted position is one we want to build on with this new service launch. We envisage many members switching their day to day banking to the Credit

Union because we are now a community owned viable alternative”. Information on the new Current Account are available from Killarney Credit Union in Killarney, Kenmare and Cahersiveen and Cara Credit Union in Tralee, Castleisland and Killorglin and on their websites.

KNOW YOUR RIGHTS: SMALL CLAIMS PROCEDURE Question I am unhappy with the repair work a builder has done to my house, he hasn’t fixed the issue and he refuses to put it right. Do I have any rights in this situation? Answer If your builder is unwilling to compensate you, you may be able to make a claim against them using the small claims procedure. The aim of this procedure is to provide an inexpensive, fast and easy way for consumers to resolve disputes without a solicitor. The maximum amount you can claim for under the small claims procedure is €2,000. The small claims procedure is provided through local District Court offices. If you have purchased goods or services for private use from someone selling them in the course of business, you can make a claim using the small claims procedure. You can make claims for bad workmanship, minor damage to property, faulty goods and for the non-return of rent deposits for certain kinds of rented properties, for example, a holiday home. Businesses can also use this procedure to make claims against other businesses about contracts for goods or services purchased. To make a claim, you need to complete the application form and submit it and a fee of €25 to the Small Claims Registrar. You can do this online at the Courts Service Online website, csol.ie. Alternatively, you can download the application form from courts.ie or get a copy from the Small Claims Registrar at the District Court office. Make sure you include the correct name and address of the company or person you are claiming against. You can double-check this information on the Companies Registration Office website at cro.ie. The Registrar sends a copy of your application to the person you are making the claim against. If the other person does not reply within 15 days of receiving your application, your claim will be automatically treated as undisputed. Then the court will make an order in your favour for the amount claimed, and direct that it be paid within a specific period of time. If your claim is disputed, the Registrar will give you a copy of the reasons why the other person is disputing your claim. The Registrar will try to negotiate a settlement to the dispute. If no settlement can be reached, the matter is set for a court hearing in the District Court.

Kerry Footballer Gets Selected To Appear On Winning Streak on Same Night as Vital Quarter Final Clash Thursday 17th October 2019: The sister of a footballer from Co. Kerry will fly into Ireland this weekend to go on the National Lottery’s Winning Streak TV game show on RTÉ One this Saturday (19th October) after his name was selected to appear on the show on the very same day he had to play an important game. When Michael Foley from Killarney, Co. Kerry got the call to say his name had been pulled out to appear on Winning Streak, last Saturday, he was overcome with excitement. The next morning another call came through which put a spanner in the works. He discovered that his club’s Kerry Senior Football Championship quarter-final had been scheduled for the same day! Michael (22) had a big decision to make – play in his big match for East Kerry versus Dingle or go on Winning Streak.

After a bit of thought, cornerforward Michael was never going to let his side down and will line out for East Kerry for the big game, which will be broadcast on the same time as Winning Streak. Michael’s older sister Melissa will be flying in from London to take his place in the Winning Streak hot seat! The first thing Melissa (28) did last Saturday evening, when she found out that Michael was going to be on the hit game show, was to book a flight to Ireland so she could cheer him on from the studio audience. Now she is going to do her brother a good turn and play the game in his place. It will be a Foley sibling takeover on RTÉ as RTÉ Two will broadcast the game live, while at the same time Winning Streak will be on RTÉ One. It will certainly be a flying visit for Melissa who will fly over on Friday evening and will return to London on Sunday

afternoon. She has lived in London for the past four and a half years, since she moved over with her boyfriend Shane, since she left Killarney after college. She works as a Cancer Nurse Specialist in St. George’s Hospital in London. While Michael, who also works at Lee Strand Milk Co-op in Tralee will be busy preparing for his game and is happy to leave the Winning Streak focus on his sister. Melissa will be supported in the audience by their parents Helen and Mike (Snr) and other members of the family and close friends. As for plans with his winnings from the show, Michael said: “To be honest, I haven’t given it a single thought as I am focusing on the big game. I know Melissa will do the family proud and I’m grateful for her stepping in in my hour of need! Regardless we will have a celebration on Saturday after the show and game is done.”

Michael has only returned to Ireland in May this year after two years of travelling around Australia. He played football when he was in Australia and played for Penrith Gaels in Sydney and Garryowen in Melbourne while he was living away from home.

Beauty

HELLO BEAUTIFUL PEOPLE! I hope you’re having an amazing week!

This week on Instagram, I asked my followers what beauty products they would buy if they could buy anything. So I said I’d share my own makeup wishlist with you. Being a makeup artist in the industry there’s obviously a lot of products launching constantly so always keep a list of products that I’d like to purchase in my notes.

Anastasia Beverly Hills Norvina Pro Pigment Palette: I’ve actually never tried an eyeshadow palette from ABH & this one created by Norvina looks AMAZING. There’s actually 3 palettes in the range, Volume 1 is my favourite.

Skindinavia Bridal Setting Spray

I love setting spray and I recently came across this one online and was very intrigued. Surely a bridal setting spray would keep your makeup on lock for the day? I need to try it and see how it compares with my ride or die setting sprays!

Kevyn Aucoin Sensual Skin Enhancer

If you follow me on Instagram you know that my big thing when it comes to makeup is skin. This is one of the most talked about skin products and I’ve heard great things.

Fenty Beauty Hydrating Foundation:

I tried the first Fenty foundation but it was just too matte and drying on my skin. I didn’t like it. But the new one is hydrating, and, as I always say HYDRATION IS KEY.

Ole Henriksen Phat Glow Facial Mask

I am a BIG fan of Ole Henriksen, The Banana Bright Primer is probably the first ever primer I have fully used up, I cannot do my makeup without it. Anyway, I have been dying to try out this face mask. It seems like it’s right up my street.

BEXBLAH

FITNESS!

Get your business noticed in Tralee’s favourite Friday read

WEIGHT TRAINING I hope you’re all having a great week.

So this week I'll be talking about common gym mistakes everyone makes. 1. SETTING UNREALISTIC GOALS: Tackling an insane goal all at once leads to failure: you’ll exhaust your time, willpower, and energy. You’ll also frustrate yourself because it takes so long to achieve. This can then lead to giving up before you've even started. 2. NOT TRACKING YOURSELF: Record everything in your workout: what exercises you did, what weight you used, how many reps you did, etc. You should also track your body by taking photos and measuring your bodyweight, inches and body fat percentage. This will highlight your successes and failures so you can adjust your exercise program and diet to get the results you want! 3. NOT HAVING A PLAN: Without a plan, you'll end up wandering the gym looking for something to do. You'll never build a great body doing that. There’s no system and you’ll prevent yourself from mastering exercises, waste time, and miss out on great results. With so many great beginner programs available, pick one, get started, and stick to it. Don't forget to change it up when it's not challenging you! 4. SKIPPING WORKOUTS: Some people skip a workout because they're feeling tired, sore, or lazy. They forget that the secret to building an amazing body is simple, consistency. Honor the commitments you make to yourself. If you decide to workout on Mondays and Thursdays and Saturdays, schedule it in and get it done. If that’s too hard, cut your routine down to suit your body, but never skip it. There's a difference! 5. OVER DOING IT: There are beginners who live in the gym, workout six times a week, burn themselves out or get injured and then quit.

For most beginners, 3-5 times a week is perfect depending on your body type and goals etc. You need to give your muscles, ligaments, and tendons time between each workout to recover, grow, and get stronger. Remember 3 or 4 good quality sessions are better than 6 or 7 forced ones.

Unless you’re an elite athlete or a high-level bodybuilder, avoid working out too often at the beginning. Doing too much, too soon will slow your progress because of the constant fatigue and lead to overtraining.

In a large bowl, stir together flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and cinnamon.

Add milk and pumpkin mixture to flour and stir until everything is just combined. The dough shouldn’t be completely smooth – we want to keep lots of butter pieces in there so the biscuits will be nice and flaky.

T RQU ING CARS ! business noticed in Tralee’s favourite Friday read Get your 44 O PREMIUM ADVERTISING NEW CODE OF CONDUCT FOR CLAMPERS

Clampers must avoid using "aggressive or threatening" language or engaging in "predatory activities" under a new code of practice for the industry.Where a motorist is being "unreasonable or aggressive", the clamper should try to reduce the tension, but if this is not possible, they should leave the scene and call gardaí.The new code, which has been devised by the National Transport Authority (NTA), aims to establish standards in relation to behaviour, performance of duties and conduct. It says clampers should avoid using "tactics that appear overenthusiastic or aggressive to motorists"."In particular, activities which could be construed as predatory may not be carried out," it says. Among a raft of recommendations contained in the new code is that a clamp must be released if it has not been locked by the time a motorist returns to their car.It also says clampers must release all vehicles if their online or phone payment facilities are not working and that at no time should a clamper escort a motorist to an ATM to withdraw money to pay for a clamp to be released. The code also says if clampers use hand-held card readers that rely on an internet connection and coverage is poor in the area where the clamping has taken place, clampers cannot ask a motorist to go somewhere else with better coverage to make a payment.Motorists currently have a 10-minute "grace period" from parking their car to buying a parking ticket. However, the NTA recommends that clampers wait 11 minutes from the time of detection before fixing the clamp "to eliminate unnecessary disputes".In the case of park-bytext services, the NTA says while it is up to motorists to ensure they have entered the correct car registration, it says technology used by parking controllers should be able to recognise invalid year or county formats.

NEW SKODA SUPERB JUST KEEPS GETTING CLASSIER !

SKODA continues its move upmarket with the latest revamp of its large family/fleet Superb liftback and estate. It is no longer a cheap car, in two senses of the word: it costs more than before, but it is also that bit classier.A lot of what's new may appear small in the overall scheme of things, but it is the series of minor changes that upgrade the entirety. Prices are up in some cases by around €1,200, but several models have €2,200 extra in spec. It works the other way for some, too, Skoda admit.Diesel prices start from €33,325 for the 120bhp 1.6-litre and €34,100 for the 2-litre Liftback (estates from €34,825). Petrols start from €30,750 (Liftback) and €32,250 (estate).Diesels are the big sellers (94pc of sales) but the 150bhp 1.5-litre petrol might narrow the gap. Most buyers (77pc) are private customers, with 23pc fleet purchases. The car goes on sale this weekend. It has two main sets of rivals: younger German premium used imports and the likes of the Volkswagen Passat, Ford Mondeo, Opel Insignia, Hyundai i40, Mazda 6, Peugeot 508, KIA Optima. All are under attack from SUVs, with sales hit hard; yet the Superb gets to No. 2 behind the Passat. The first Superb arrived in 2001; more than 18,000 are now on our roads.

3 REASONS WHY I WONT BE GOING ELECTRIC YET!

(great article written by Indo Technology editor Adrain Wreckler ) For almost a decade, I have wanted to permanently switch to an electric car. I have driven several of them. The positives are appealing. They have high spec interiors, incredible acceleration power and give you the feeling of being more environmentally friendly. But three things have stopped me: the price, the poor distance range and the lack of public charging points. The price has come down to a reasonable level - you can now get a new model for under €30,000, which is manageable if you have a model to trade-in in decent condition. But the range for any of these sub-€30,000 electric cars is still really weak. It's typically around 150km. I can't drive from Dublin to north Mayo in one without running out of juice half way.And the lack of charging points remains chronic. On that drive to Mayo, there are only a few individual 'slow charging' spots to recharge west of the Shannon. If I'm lucky and the spot isn't occupied, it will take me between two and four hours to recharge while I look for something to do, or just sit in my car.So a four-hour drive becomes a seven-hour drive, at a minimum. In Ireland, there are 800 public charging points for electric cars. Most are in or around cities. But over 90pc of these are 'slow charging' facilities. In other words, they're almost useless. For example, the last time I used one was when driving an eGolf (€38,000 new, even after all the available grants, so out of my budget range anyway). I was stuck for power so I plugged one in at a Dublin suburb. After an hour sitting in Abrakebabra across the road, I returned to find that it was just over a quarter charged. That was enough to get me around for the day, but not if I wanted to travel out to one or two retail parks on the outskirts of the city. The Government's paltry €6m in last week's Budget for public charging infrastructure will do very little to remedy this. It's such a shame. Electric cars are the future, without question. But every time I consider switching to one, I'm reminded of why hardly anyone - including government ministers - actually buys one. You can't safely rely on getting somewhere beyond a few kilometres away without possibly being stranded. Yes, a Tesla will give you a range of over 300km. But at over €60,000, that is not a realistic option for all but a tiny handful of people. Friday 18th October 2019

FAI NATIONAl P.R.O. OF THE YEAR GARVEY’S AND TEMPLEOGUE SET FOR ANOTHER CRACKER: One of the big games of the season will take place in the Tralee Sports Complex on Saturday night when Griffith College Templeogue comes to Town. These two sides have served up a number of cracking games over the last few seasons with Garvey’s leading 5-4 on wins in recent times. Tip off in Tralee on Saturday night is at 7.30pm. Garvey’s go into the game in good form having overpowered DCU Saints last weekend away in Carrickmacross last weekend. The Tralee side led at the end of all four quarters taking the win 104 -60. With Paul Dick and Rap Buivydas back in action this was a much better display by the Tralee side. The Warriors led by 12 early on and were 26-12 up after the first ten minutes. And they certainly were no feeling any effects of the long journey as in a breath-taking second quarter they added 32 points from 9 different scorers in the quarter to almost have the game wrapped up by the half leading 62-25. Lawton has been very impressive in his first few games for the Warriors and he hit four huge scores in the third quarter to open up the lead and it was 87-38 with only the last quarter to play. The home side to their credit kept going and in the end were on 60 but by that time the Warriors had breached the 100 coming from a Jokubaitis three. The same player wrapped the scoring to see the Warriors notch up a 44 point win. For the Warriors Jonathan Lawton ended with 40, Eoin Quigley 14 and Keith Jumper ending with 13 while Michael Bonaparte was the top Saints scorer on 29. Head Coach Pat Price said afterwards that this was as good a performance as he has seen since joining the Tralee side. “My players were unselfish, feisty and eager to bounce back from a tough week showing great focus with wonderful leadership from O’Sullivan and Donaghy. WARRIOR’S U20’S OPEN LEAGUE: The new u20 League is played on one Sunday each month with the Kerry sides in a group of 5. This Sunday in the Complex at 11.30 KCYMS Killorglin take on Fr Mathews followed by the Warriors against UCC Demons while Gneeveguilla are few this round.

Friday 18th October 2019

TRALEE TO HOST BASKETBALL’S CHAMPIONS TROPHY AND LEAGUE CUP FINALS: The National League basketball season will come to an end in Tralee on March 28th and 29th. These will take place in the Tralee Sports Complex. Garvey Tralee Warriors won the Champions Trophy two years in a row before Templeogue took the title last season. The James Fleming coached Fr Mathews from Cork will be looking to retain the Women’s trophy. Basketball Ireland National League Manager Sheena Hubbard said that they were delighted with Tralee as the venue. “We are excited at bringing the Champions Trophy and League Cup finals to Kerry and Tralee in particular. With so much excitement in Kerry around basketball at the moment it should make for some games in front of the hugely passionate Kerry crowds.” TRALEE SCHOOLS GO DOWN IN FUTSAL SEMI-FINALS: The county final of the Munster 1st Years Girls Futsal took place in the wonderful new venue of the Tralee Sports Campus. Presentation Tralee and Mercy Mounthawk Tralee reached the semi- finals but were beaten by St Brigids The Pres Killarney and Pobail Scoil Inbhear Sceine who contested a very tight final in the tournament ran under the leadership of Kerry RDO Darren Aherne. In the end it was the Killarney girls, led by Player of the Tournament Leah McMahon that took the win and prevented the Kenmare school completing a 4-in-a-row. The Pres will now go on to represent Kerry in the Munster finals in the W IT Arena on November 19th. The first year boy’s tournament will take place at the same venue on October 25tyh with Mercy Mounthawk aiming to retain their title. DEFEAT BUT LOTS OF POSITIVES FROM MARK FARRAN FINAL DAY: By now you will have seen that Kerry lost out to Shelbourne in the Mark Farran Cup final but there were a huge amount of positives on the

day for Kerry soccer. On the field the boys were unlucky that half time came when it did as they were on top for the last 20 minutes of the first half and levelled the game at 1-1 after going behind in the 20th minute. However the Shels (who are linked with top Schoolboys club the DDSL St Kevin’s) were obviously given the ‘hairdryer treatment’ in the dressing room and the scored two quick goals in the first ten minutes of the second half. Kerry tried hard to get back into the game but to be fair to the Dublin side they were physically very strong and prevented Kerry from playing their fast flowing football. But while the players and management were disappointed this was a huge step up for Kerry soccer and a sign of many more good days. Off the field the huge crowd proved that there is an appetite for football at this level in the county and while you would not get all these people for an Airtricity League Division 1 game if you could get up to 350 to 400 at home games this would be a viable proposition. Mounthawk Park once again proved to be a top quality facility and drew great praise from those who were attending a game there for the first time. This does not happen without a lot of hard work by the KDL members. Back on the field and while the season is over for the 13’s, 15’s and 19’s the 17’s are still in the Shield and have a quarter final away to Cobh Ramblers on Sunday. So they are just two game away to another national final and if Billy Dennehy and James Sugrue can get the player mind sets right for the game – and they will they could be looking forward to a semi-final in two weeks.

tribute to all four teams on brilliant displays of camogie.

The u6 girls and boys were delighted to visit Na Gaeil last Sunday for a great morning’s football. The club thanks everyone at Na Gaeil for welcoming the young players. The u8 and u10 boys and girls were back training as normal last Sunday with great numbers on the training ground. The u10 Boys Players of the Week were Ryan Nix and Ben Pierce. Tralee Pitch and Putt Club’s Scratch Gents team have reached the semifinal of the National Inter-Club had come through a tough encounter against St Anne’s of Cork on the Lakeside Templemore. The squad will now be back in action this weekend with the semi-finals taking place at the same venue with Fermoy the opponents. Tralee got the semi-final off to the perfect start with Jamie Blake and Alan Hobbart. Both Jason Cregan and Padraig Hobbart and Jason Cregan went down narrowly ahead of their games with singles to come. Jamie Blake won as did Jason O’Regan and Jason Cregan but when Alan and Padraig Hobbart were beaten the match was tied at 4-4. Tony Blake was on the tee course for Tralee and he led Ray Murphy going 3 up before the Cork player drew level. Blake then holed a great five foot put on the 17th and got the half he needed to wrap up the win for Tralee. This meant there would be a Kerry side in action on finals day for the fourth year in a row following on from Deerpark who were in the Scratch semi-finals in 2016 and the Nett semis in 2017 and 2018. Should Tralee get over the defending champions in the Last 4 encounter on Saturday morning they will play either Larkspur Park or Collinstown of Westmeath in the afternoons final. We all join the County Board in wishing the 5 Tralee players all the best. ON THE GREENS – GOLF: In the Master Classic final sponsored by the Kerryman newspaper Michael Sheehy was the winner from Eamon Fitzgerald with David Fitzgerald in third and Patrick Stack fourth.
