'Kilimanjaro Mama' Wins Best Feature Film At Kerry International Film Festival Following a sell-out premiere at Killarney Cinema on Saturday evening and a standing ovation as the credits rolled things got even better for some Kerry based filmmakers. Director Malcolm Willis and Producer Brian Hurley along with film crew were astonished when they were informed their feature documentary “Kilimanjaro Mama” was shortlisted for two awards as part of the twentieth Kerry International Film Festival. Before the night was over it was revealed that they won Best Feature Film which is an impressive achievement for an independent production with a tight budget against some big budget international competition. Kilimanjaro Mama is an hour long documentary featuring an extraordinary young woman, Louise Quill from Tralee, Co. Friday 25th October 2019
Kerry. Throughout the film Louise tells us the story of why she decided to set up Tir na Nog orphanage in Africa, what drives her and the impact it has had on her own health and wellbeing.Documenting the journey from Ireland to Tanzania, this is the story of one woman’s sheer dogged determination to give the children of Kilimanjaro the best possible chance to overcome the tough life they have been dealt.Director Malcolm Willis stated: “This is our home festival and it was very special having all the hardworking crew with us on the night, it’s a small team of people who worked extremely hard to make this. This film shines a light on the amazing children of Tir na Nog orphanage and the inspirational woman behind it all, Louise Quill.” Following the win producer
Brian Hurley commented: “This was an amazing and unexpected accolade. We were thrilled with the support at the premiere but to have also won Best Feature Film is unreal. All involved in Kerry International Film Festival should take a bow for putting together a world class event and thank you for allowing

us to be part of it.”The award winning documentary film will now be entered into a select number of film festivals nationally and internationally and the filmmakers plan to secure a television broadcast in the coming months.

LEGAL MATTERS CORNER MIRIAM MC GILLICUDDY ANSWERS YOUR LEGAL QUERIES
Students and Renting In our last column we discussed Sophie, a new student in IT Tralee and student working rights. This week we will follow up on that and discuss the hugely important issue of rented accommodation. First off it should be noted that there is no legal requirement for a landlord to provide you with a lease and neither is there an obligation on you to sign a lease if you do not wish to do so and you still have legal rights under the Residential Tenancies Act 2004 and Residential Tenancies (Amendment) Act 2015. If you do decide to sign a lease it cannot take away from your rights under the Equal Status Acts 2004-2015 and the terms of the tenancy cannot be changed during the lease period unless you and the Landlord both agree. Since a lease is legally binding and usually a year you should read it carefully and always get a second opinion on it. It’s very important to note that there is no cooling off period like a consumer rights contract. If for whatever reason you break the lease or do not give proper notice of leaving the property, it does not automatically give your landlord reason to keep your deposit or make deductions from it. They may however seek to cover costs incurred such as re advertising, re-letting costs or lost rent. You should seek evidence of this. A landlord has a right to lessen their losses in re letting their property as soon as possible. You may be asked for certain documentation like your PPS Number, a reference from your current employer, Photo I.D. or a bank statement but you should only hand these over if you are being offered a tenancy. Unfortunately there are some scams out there so a student must be careful when looking to rent, be careful of online ads and only look for a reputable landlord or estate agent. Don’t be rushed in handing over money and DO NOT hand over cash and always insist upon a proper receipt. This should always be done at the property and it’s vital that the keys work and you have proper contact details for the landlord/agent. Always photograph the premises when you go into it as evidence of the state of the premises on letting. Landlords have to maintain their properties to a certain standard. Legal Quip
One advantage of living in the past is that the rents are much cheaper.

Four great partnerships hosted prestigious Irish & International golf operators in Tralee last weekend! In advance of the IGOTA’s 22nd National Golf Tourism Conference & Awards dinner which was hosted in Tralee & North Kerry for the very first time last weekend an invite was extended to the golf operators to arrive a day early to Stay, Dine & Golf in Tralee on Saturday 19th October.
The Rose Hotel, Ballygarry House Hotel, Tralee Chamber Alliance & Tralee Golf Club, came together to host the familiarisation experience for the operators. Starting with Golf in Tralee Golf Club on Saturday morning, the group then enjoyed a fabulous meal in Croí restaurant that evening and checked in for a relaxing four-star overnight stay in The Rose Hotel and Ballygarry House Hotel. Denis Kane, IGTOA Chairman, thanked all for hosting such a fantastic showcase of Tralee speaking at the dinner hosted by Dick Spring, Ronan Deasy & Brian Stephenson from Tralee Chamber Alliance. Golf Tour operators, delegates Friday 25th October 2019
and sponsors descended on Tralee from 20th-21st October for the IGTOA’s 22nd National Golf Tourism Conference & Gala Golf Awards. The action-packed two-day event included: a business networking session, conference, networking dinner, golf in Ballybunion and a nongolfer event, including a dance workshop in Siamsa, sightseeing helicopter ride, walk in Glenteennassig Forest, with a surprise pop up Irish whiskey & Baileys bar hidden in the woods followed by lunch in Ashes Bar in Camp. The event culminated with the annual black-tie Gala awards dinner. All the events were hosted between The Rose Hotel & Ballygarry House Hotel & Spa, who joined forces last October to win this prestigious event for Tralee! Padraig McGillicuddy, Proprietor, Ballygarry House Hotel: “It’s a privilege to entertain the Golf operators & associated from all over the globe. The event has been a real showcase for Kerry’s

Happy Halloween At the Grow with Google Digital Garage SMEs and start-ups from across the Kerry and the South West attended the Grow With Google Digital Garage Workshop at the Brehon Hotel, Killarney last Friday 18th October. The workshop was hosted in partnership with Enterprise Ireland and helped people and businesses acquire the skills needed to embrace opportunity presented by technology. The aim of the half-day workshop was to support these businesses to grow as they navigate an uncertain climate and featured mentoring and talks focussed on digital skills that businesses had highlighted as important to them as they try to leverage today’s business and commercial opportunities, including Getting your Business Online, Using Data
to Drive Growth and Going Global with Digital.
Seán Kelly, MEP addressed attendees at the event and said of the workshop “Local businesses are the foundation of the economy in Kerry and the South-West, and we know that the coming months and years will bring uncertainty and business challenges for rural business communities. The Grow with Google Digital Garage is a great opportunity for businesses in the SouthWest to receive mentoring and coaching in the tools and skills that can help them prepare for the changes over the coming months and continue to grow in an everincreasing competitive global marketplace”

Garvey crowned 'Jester of the Kingdom' with his poem entitled: narrative stories told in verse, Twenty three humorous poets took to the stage in Tralee on Friday night (18th October) to battle for the coveted title of 'Jester of the Kingdom'. The popular humorous verse competition, now in its fourth year, was held at Kerins O' Rahillys GAA club, in front of a large, appreciative audience. Organiser Sonia Elston, said she was delighted with the turnout and the number of humorous poems entered in the competition, both of which were at record levels for the event. "Our Judges Noel King, Derry Butler and Vicky McCarthy had their work cut out to shortlist the entries, which ranged from humorous poetry and
to downright doggerel! We were transported across the world, from tigers in Africa and bullfrogs in America, to the inside of a Peugeot, and front row seats at a fictional wake for Eddie Dunne, to name but a few." After much deliberation the judges decided in 4th place was Anne Marie Kennedy, with an autobiographical piece called ‘Full Circle’, in 3rd place was John McGrath, with his poem entitled 'Fair Day in Castleisland'. In 2nd place was 'Love is an awful curse', by Mike Guerin from Newcastlewest. Local Tralee author, Anthony Garvey emerged victorious
'Sight for Sore Eyes', which took a humorous look at his experience undergoing successful corrective surgery for a congenital squint."As a proud Dublin man, living and working in Tralee, it's a great honour to win the Jester of the Kingdom," Garvey said on receiving the award. "It will have pride of place on my mantelpiece for many years to come." Pictured are: Sonia Elston, event organiser, Anthony Garvey, Jester of the Kingdom and Zach Garvey, Anthony's eldest son. Booklets of the 22 poems are available from Sonia Elston for €8 each,
which includes postage and packing. To order one, contact Sonia at 087 219 5406 or e-mail her at soniaelston@yahoo.com

Meeting brilliance at eight 1984 the joy and excitement filled the evening of autumn falling leaves, and the sharp cold air that wrapped around young dot. Dot was all of 8 years old. HALLOWEEN night was upon her and the Daring journey of trick or treat. Dot was a little different to the other kids her age, she held bravery and courageousness alongside immense adventure all on her very own. In other words, she never needed others to create her world. Dot of course was young and childlike with many friends, yet her world was magical with just her in it. So, it began the evenings preparations. Dot layed out her outfit and accessories for the night’s events ahead. Once armed with her basket hooked and hung from her elbow outstretched, dressed in her patent shiny red shoes, with a skeleton outline on the dark cloak with a large hood that hid Dot completely. Off she went. She walked through and into the darkness with the elements of Halloween night as company. The full moonlight shuns through the still dark overcast skies that were turning black quickly, this later offered light through the gaps of trees and bounced from the roof tops. Dot located a long stretch of road that had houses stretched along it just as large and wide. This place of interest was not far from home, yet Dot found the location to be the best of interest to trick or treat. The location of houses held the setting of a world that held Halloween

to its finest. Crooked gates that creaked and creaked, cats that wailed and meowed beyond there normal cry. Trees that bent in half, with branches overflowing onto the walkway. The local bats swooped in great speed through the branches and high into the air. The whistle of wind that blew fast and slowly made the night exactly as it should be October 31st, 1984. Ding dong, ding dong, the bells rang from house to house, the adults would answer and fill dots basket with goodies of sugar and cake, some would ask for a treat a joke or some song, when realising Dot was alone they would pat her on the head and usher her along with some money without the song. Dot would here other kids someway off in the distance, yet she smiled with joy to have happiness in their interests. She continued alone with some chill in her bones. The howling of her world was exactly how it unfurled. The barking of dogs and banging of crackers, fireworks and more as she knocked on every door. She came to the last of the houses that stretched along that wide road not too far from home. The winds grew stronger, the light dimmed darker, the trees swayed heavy as the cats, dogs and bats played merry. The last trick or treat that dot was to meet, the doorbell rang, and was answered with a, “well, well, well, who do we have here my sweet little dear”? “My name is dot, my basket and treats are what I have got, Trick or treat is tonight. Your house is the last in my sight”. The lady stood forward and lent over a little, “now tell
me Dot how is it your alone and feel no way brittle or scared or nervous of the great noise and darkness”. “I go my own way” says dot. “I see and hear and feel the lot, adventure, the weather and animals cry. The shouts of other kids not far from my side. The moonlight and shadows are my protection and guide. I’m not afraid to be alone, not with wind, trees, rooftops with light, whistles of excitement brighten my eyes. I’m 8 years old or so I’m told, so I’d better go I don’t want to be bold. It’s getting late so thank you ill close out your gate”. “Little girl wait please I have a treat for you, come closer and sit on this my broom, I was waiting all evening to ride high in the sky. I agree its late so up up we go, this Halloween night I’m flying you home”. Dot did as told and in no way bold. “It’s been lovely to meet you dot; my name is Brilliance I fly every Halloween night since 1555. Tonight, my friend has been the greatest yet, to meet a warrior on Halloween night that’s 8 years old and filled with soul. Il open your gate and in you go, night night my sweet till next time we meet, let your world just be full of tricks and treats. The elements of Halloween forever in your dreams”.

Kerry Student Scoops Prestigious Biotech Award Roisin O’Connor from Ventry has scooped a prestigious award from Regeneron, the largest scale bulk biologics productions facility in Ireland. The 2019 Regeneron Ireland College Awards, in collaboration with University College Cork (U.C.C.), were announced last week at an event in Regeneron’s Industrial Operations and Production Supply (IOPs) facility in Limerick. The awards acknowledge outstanding research projects which are presented by selected students pursuing degrees in science and engineering. The winning students are awarded a generous bursary to support their studies, a paid placement at Regeneron and a Regeneron employee mentor
to help them take the first steps of their careers. To participate in the award selected students submitted a presentation on a specific topic related to their academic course. The shortlisted candidates were invited to present their findings to a group of senior Regeneron managers who selected the winners. Professor Tommie McCarthy, University College Cork, added, “The Regeneron College Awards have allowed us to build further bridges between industry and academia and our talented student pool. The awards give students the opportunity to see what a world-class career in science and STEM could be, with one of the world’s most innovative companies. U.C.C.

Call for Lyme disease unit at UHK, Kerry General Kerry County Councillor, Michael Cahill has called on the Minister for Health, Simon Harris TD, the HSE and the Department of Health to provide a dedicated Lyme Disease Treatment Unit at University Hospital Kerry to cater for the southern region as a matter of extreme urgency. Speaking at this month's meeting of Kerry County Council, the Fianna Fail Councillor said this horrible condition is becoming more prevalent, particularly in county Kerry. "The number of cases has increased tenfold within the past 10 years and it is highly unacceptable to be sending more and more people abroad for treatment and diagnosis" stated the
Rossbeigh man. "Lime Disease is most common in Kerry and Cork and it is now in every Parish in our county" stated Mr Cahill" "There has been far too many cases of misdiagnosis and it's high time that a Consultant in Infectious
Diseases be appointed to UHK to help end the practice of Irish citizens having to travel abroad for diagnosis and treatment" stated the Fianna Fail man. Councillor Cahill also called on the Minister and the HSE to introduce an
Educational and Awareness Programme for Primary Care providers including GPs, Public Health Nurses and the general public as a matter of priority.
Warriors battle to decisive win over archrivals Templeogue Garvey’s Tralee Warriors overcame Griffith College Templeogue with
a hard fought but decisive 77-68 win at the Tralee Sports Complex on Saturday night. The Warriors led at the end of all four quarters securing their third win of the campaign, and their fourth in a row over the Dublin side, with a solid defensive effort throughout allied to some excellent shooting from Jon Lawton, Paul Dick and in particular Eoin Quigley who hit four big threes individually and collectively turning the game in the Warriors favour.Next up for the Warriors is a Cup and League double header next weekend. Firstly they travel to take on Keane’s Supervalu Killorglin in an all Kerry National Cup first round clash on Friday night at 8.00pm in the Killorglin Sports Complex before heading to the IWA in Clontarf for a Super League Sunday date at 3.00pm with Pyrobel Killester. Beauty
HELLO BEAUTIFUL PEOPLE! I hope you’re having an amazing week!
The new CH is finally open, if you haven’t been in there yet definitely go and have a look. It’s such a bright open space and has so many new and exciting brands. Congratulations to all the CH Team & I wish them luck on their newest venture! One of the brands that is new to CH is IT Cosmetics, a skin focused makeup brand created by dermatologists and plastic surgeons. I was lucky enough to have been invited to the launch event a few weeks ago and I got some of the products to try. My favourite so far is definitely their best selling CC+ Cream, it has 7 benefits all in one. Full coverage Anti-ageing with SPF 50 Brightening Colour Corrector Hydrating Reduces Pores Reduces Fine Lines and wrinkles. I’ve been trying this for a few weeks now and I’m so impressed. It feels amazing on the skin and covers everything without looking cakey. So if you’ve been dying to try a new brand that is GOOD for your skin, give IT Cosmetics a go, you will not be disappointed. In other news, I’m sure most of you are aware but I said I would mention it just incase, I am currently taking makeup appointments, I am based in Caherslee but I can do call-outs if needs be. I specialise in event, bridal and makeup for photography and have over 5 years experience - training in Dublin, London & Sydney. I also do group lessons, hen parties or birthdays for all ages! If you have anything coming up or you would like to get a makeup appointment for the festive season you can contact me by…

FITNESS!

WEIGHT TRAINING I hope you’re all having a great week.
Now, I know I’m always talking about fitness and health with regards to the gym and food, but today I’m going to talk about health with regards to mental state and self development. I was having an off week last week and I realized that I was putting too much pressure on myself. This time of year is where EVERYONE is talking about their diet/fitness plan coming up to Christmas and why it’s so amazing and that you should do it and it can be very overwhelming. What you should do is focus on YOU, what YOUR goals are and what YOU want. Don’t focus on anyone else’s food plan, workout plan or whatever. Just focus on what you know you should be doing for yourself. If you don’t know what that is… seek the help of a professional to see what you need to be doing. Be it a personal trainer, online coach, whatever. Just be sure they’re reputable and know what they’re doing. Also, a great thing to do for yourself is to read. Reading develops the mind and gives you new things to think about. One of my goals for January is to read as much as possible, I got a few books for Christmas and I’m really getting stuck into them. I like non fiction books, some of the books I have on my list at the moment are… CRUSH IT! - Gary Vaynerchuk Tools of Titans - Tim Ferriss Tribe of Mentors - Timothy Ferriss Feel The Fear and Do It Anyway - Susan Jeffers Relentless - Tim Grover I didn’t make any big goals bar one, to make more daily, weekly and monthly goals. By focusing on what you want on a daily, monthly or weekly basis you’re more likely to achieve what you want and stay on track.

TO R QU ING CARS ! business noticed in Tralee’s favourite Friday read Happy Halloween Get your PREMIUM ADVERTISING 2020 TOYOTA MIRAI REVEALED: HYDROGEN... THE FUTURE ?
Will next year's new Toyota Mirai look like this? This coupé-style four-door concept ostensibly previews the second generation of Toyota's fuel-cell flagship, which comes as a great relief; Beyond the aesthetic improvements, it comes with a raft of more important changes under the skin. A larger hydrogen fuel tank and more efficient fuel cell are said to offer a 30 per cent improvement to driving range over the 300 miles of the current model, which has a 153bhp, 247lb ft in-house-developed fuelcell powertrain, with a 1.5kWh 60kg nickel-metal-hydride battery pack and control electronics from a Camry hybrid. That works out at around 390 miles – the longest of any zero-emission car. “We have pursued the goal of making a car that customers will feel they want to drive all time," says Yoshikazu Tanaka, the new Mirai’s chief engineer. "A car that has an emotional and attractive design and the kind of dynamic and responsive." With the UK Government seemingly hell bent on betting the farm on battery-electric technology over any other, many global car makers have continued to work on fuel cell propulsion not just for passenger cars but also for commercial vehicles, buses and trains in the rest of the world. And while it might not be visible here in Britain and Ireland , the future of hydrogen-powered mobility is looking increasingly bright in places like Germany, China, Korea and Japan. Toyota has produced more than 10,000 Mirais which have been sold all around the world and has encouraged and invested in hydrogen refuelling structures, though sadly not in the UK. In London a fleet of 27 Mirais has covered more than a million miles in the hands of private hire company Green Tomato Cars for its zero emissions executive car services which serve 2,000 corporate clients.
HONEST JOHN
HOW ARE TOWING WEIGHTS CALCULATED AND HOW MUCH IS IT SAFE TO TOW?
My understanding of towing capacity is that it is based on the kerbweight of the vehicle. Most manufacturers recommend 85% of gross kerbweight. So how come so many large 4x4s can tow way above that weight? I was thinking it was torque related but even automatic transmission models seem to have much larger than kerbweight capacities and they have no.where near the torque...C.S H.J. says You are correct about the 85% rule - the trailer/caravan is best being less than 85% of the weight of the towing vehicle for safe stability. You should also consider the noseweight (which is the weight the trailer/caravan puts on the towbar). The noseweight should be between 5-7% of the weight of the trailer/caravan. You should never tow anything without knowing the individual and combined weights of your car (and the trailer or caravan). The Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW) or Maximum Authorised Mass (MAM) tells you how much a vehicle or a trailer can legally weigh in order to be used on the road, while the Gross Train Weight (GTW) or Gross Combination Weight (GCW), is the total, permitted weight of the vehicle, the trailer and everything it’s carrying. You can find these figures on the van or trailer’s chassis plate, in the handbook and sometimes on the V5C registration certificate.
FORESTER RECOMMISSION
We have a 2016 Subaru Forester that came with a five-year warranty. Recommended oil changes are annual. We were considering changing the oil and filter ourselves instead of making a three-hour round trip to the dealer and paying £130 to have them do the work. Would we be infringing the terms of the warranty? AL HJ says It’s not worth it if there is any chance of voiding the warranty. And for the UK £130 is cheap. The same job is £250 on an Audi and up to £300 on a BMW.
AUF WIEDERSEHEN PETROL?
A recent reply to SL implied that future emission regulations will make particulate filters necessary on petrol cars. What about the effect on drivers doing only short journeys? CH HJ says We don't yet know, but we can safely anticipate that they will function best where the engine has an integrated exhaust manifold and the PPF can be closecoupled directly to get maximum heat.
CAT LETTER
Recently you wrote that the 2.0-litre Ingenium diesel-engined Land Rover Discovery Sport had some design issues due to the particulate filter being mounted too far away from the engine. Would this also apply to the Jaguar F-Pace? DP HJ SAYS No, because in the F-Pace the engine is mounted longitudinally so the DPF can be close-coupled to the exhaust manifold and works more efficiently. Same goes for the XE and XF. FAI NATIONAl P.R.O. OF THE YEAR FINAL TRALEE ADVERTISER COLUMN FOR OCTOBER 2019: Stacks looking on with interest to the County semi-finals: The Garvey’s Senior County Football semi-finals are down for decision this week. St Brendan’s Board take on East Kerry in the first of a double header in the Fitzgerald Stadium on Sunday throwing in at 1.30pm. This will be followed by the meeting of Dr Crokes and South Kerry in the second game. From last weekend’s games East Kerry were probably the most impressive as they were much too good for Dingle. Dr Crokes were made fight all the way by Kenmare before the pulled away in the end. While both of these will be favourites to progress no one will be writing off South Kerry who have a great record in the County Championships or St Brendan’s who have been catching the eye in their run to the last four. There will also be a fifth team keeping a keen eye on proceedings. Austin Stacks are the reigning Club Champions and if a District team wins the Bishop Moynihan Cup they will play in the Munster Championship representing Kerry. It can’t be easy for the Stacks players or management to be training away for something that might not happen. However with three of the four sides left being District teams Stacks might get their Christmas wish!! The 2019 Garvey’s Senior Football Championship final has been fixed for Austin Stacks Park. KERINS O’RAHILLYS NEWS: Last Sunday was the final day for the Academy for 2019. It was a great morning and one of the highlights for the young players was a visit by Kerry hero David Moran. Tommy Walsh and Gavin O’Brien had to reschedule their visit due to prior commitments. The club Committee thanks all the coaches and parents who made the year such an enjoyable one. The final get together will be the sponsored walk by the Canal this Saturday leaving the main club house at 11.15am. On return those who have booked for the trip to Sandy Feet Farm will head off for an afternoon of Halloween fun. Full details will be sent by text this week. The kids are asked to bring as many of their sponsorship cards back Friday 25th October 2019
before the walk and all monies will be greatly received as this is the only Academy fundraiser of the year, October 30th is the last date for ordering new gear and half the amount must be paid to secure a deposit. In the Ladies section the u12’s continue to train for the Town League Plate final which is pencilled in for Sunday November 3rd. The u14’s were unlucky to go down away to Abbeydorney in the North Kerry Shield Division 1 final. The u16’s are training as normal as they await their opponents in the North Kerry final. The Town League Blitz will also be coming up in the next week and there will also be an u15 District Blitz with dates to be confirmed in the next week. There was disappointment when Dingle had to cancel their game set for Strand Road last Sunday. Players will be contacted about training by text. The senior ladies are asked where possible to fill a card for the Canal Walk. Some of the monies will go to a new set of jerseys and there is also the day out before Christmas. The Ladies Night Out has been booked for the annual night out which will this week take place in the Healy Room at the clubhouse. This is always a special night out for the moms and ladies in the club. Team photos for the 2020 calendar over the next few weeks for all age groups. Members are also asked to support the club in the effort to get the Lotto to have exclusive selling rights in the Rock Street Post Office. ST PAT’S NEWS: There was no winner of the Lotto from the numbers drawn 5,10,17 and 20 and the next jackpot will be e2,400 with the draw in Skelper Quane’s Bar on Sunday night. The Academy’s last morning had another excellent turn-out and as well as the football the kids enjoyed lots of games including tug of war with lots of Halloween treats as promised. The u6’s will be back in action indoors in mid-January but before that will enjoy their Christmas Party that will take place in the National School. The u8’s and u10’s also enjoyed their final day and are now on a deserved break after a long season which started indoor on January 20th. The Academy took part in the Go Games and both welcomed and visited a number of clubs this year. The players enjoyed plenty of home based treats after last Sunday’s session. The Tralee Junior Parkrun also
takes place every Sunday morning at 9:20am in the town park. It’s a short 2k run around the town park for boys and girls and is a great fun event so I would encourage you all to bring your son or daughter to it during the off season. The club will be scheduling the Juvenile AGM in the coming weeks so I will keep you posted on this once it’s finalised. The club paid tribute to the coaches for all the hard work over the year and also to the parents for all their cooperation. The club congratulates all its members who were in action with the St Brendan’s Board in their Garvey’s Senior County Championship quarter-final win over Legion. A big crowd will travel to Killarney for the semi-final in the Fitzgerald Stadium this Sunday when they take on the Legion at 1.30pm. AUSTIN STACKS NEWS: The final outdoor session for the u6’s took place last weekend with all the players showing how much they have developed over the last few months. They put these to use in a series of super-blitz matches and are already looking forward to the New Year. The u7’s and 8’s had some silveware to play for before their season ended. The Kevin Barry Cup was presented by Colm Mangan to the u8’s Michaal Carmody. The Martin ‘Bracker’ O’Regan Cup was presented by Martin O’Regan to Conor Maguire. The Jimmy Barry Cup was presented by Colm Mangan to Oisin Horan. This Saturday thr club will host the much-looked-forward to u10 competition. Up to 520 players will take part in the 5th annual John Lynch Memorial Tournament which wil be played on 16 pitches at 2 venues. This tournament is as important as the Lee Strand Tournament and will be a great day for the young players and all those watchng. The u9’s and 10’s also had their Cup games last weekend with the John Galvin Cup presented by Aileen Galvin and Eanna O’Cathail to Oran O’Donoghue. The Garry Fernane Cup went to the u10 captain Darragh Lyons while David Hobbert was presented with the the Paddy Drummond Memorial Cup by Tim McMahon the clubs juvenile chair. SCHOOLS GAA: There are players from all the Tralee clubs lining out with their schools as these competitions are now underway. The Green are in the Dunloe Cup semi-final while Mercy Mounthawk have progressed to the Last four of the O’Sullivan Cup. Both schools are also looking forward ot their Corn Ui Mhuiri campaigns. SCOR COMPEITIONS: All th Tralee clubs are preapring for Scor and will hopefully have as many entrants as possible. The Tralee Board finals must be completed by December 1st with the County final set for December 14th which will also be the date for the County quiz. The goal for all is to reach the All Ireland finals

which will take place in the INEC in Killarney early next year. PARNELL’S NEWS: The Parnell’s Club AGM will be held on the 15th of November at 7.30pm. Nominations and motion forms are available on request from the club Secretary David Brick – secretary.traleeparnells.kerry@gaa. ie. Forms must be returned by email no later than Thursday November 7th. Tralee Parnells camogie players born 2006 or earlier, female club coaches and mentors, club mothers/sisters/aunties etc. are invited to RSVP to Camogie mentors, if you are interested in Strength and Conditioning training with Coach Diarmuid Brennan, November-February, at his new premises at CBS The Green. The Parnell’s Awards Night and Monster Raffle will take place on November 8th with full details to follow. Parnells have been fortunate enough to secure Christmas bagpacking in Dunnes Stores at the Horan Centre on December 22nd 9am-9pm which has great potential to generate funds for the club. We need the help of parents and families to make this a successful event. Please contact club mentors to provide your availability. The Club congratulates CBS The Green seniors as they won the opening match in the defence of their Munster Championship defeating Ennistymon Vocational School of Clare 5.35 to 2.05. Well done to everyone involved. They will play the next game on November 19th at 12.30. CAMOGIE NEWS:
Clanmaurice emerged with a good win over Tramore in the Munster Junior Club camogie semi-final played at WIT. The Kerry side got off to a great start leading 1-02 to 0-02 at the half. Tramore tried hard to close the gap but Clanmaurice hit the net again to take the win 2-09 to 0-05. Clanmaurice will take on Clare’s Doora-Barefield in the final after they defeated Crecora of Limerick in the other semi-final. The Kerry Camogie Blitz took place this week hosted by the Causeway Comprehensive School with a number of schools 1st to 3rd years taking part. There was great news for Kerry camogie when Patrice Diggin picked up a ‘Soaring Star Award’ at midfield and was also named as the Junior Players Player of the Year. ANOTHER BIG WEEKEND FOR KERRY SOCCER: The Kerry 17’s bounced back from their defeat to Bohs in the Mark Farran Cup final with a 1-0 away win at Cobh Ramblers in the quarter final of the Shield. This Saturday they travel to Athlone with the prospect of

T: 066-7126399 or E: traleeadvertiser@gmail.com another National final 90 minutes away. While this will be a tough encounter it is one that Kerry will be looking to win to set up a meeting with Sligo Rovers. To reach another national final would round off a great season for the Kerry 17’s. Staying on the Inter League front and the Kerry 15’s enjoyed the perfect start to their Subway Inter League as they had a big win over South Tipperary in Mounthawk Park. They are due to face Clare this weekend. The Oscar Traynor also begins this weekend when Kerry are at home to the Limerick Desmond League kicking off at 2pm. Kerry will also face Clare and Limerick District in their Group so a win at home would be a great way for Brian Spillane and his squad to start the competition. Of course Kerry can’t use any of the u19 League of Ireland side but should still be able to assemble an experienced squad. GARVEY’S GO INTO CUP DERBY IN GREAT FORM: Garvey’s Tralee Warriors head into this Saturday nights all Kerry Cup clash away to Keanes Supervalu Killorglin on the back of another big win over rivals Griffith College Templeogue. The Tralee side now have the ‘Indian sign’ over their Dublin opponents as this was their 4th win in a row over them. The 77-68victory made it three wins in the SuperLeague having led at the end of all four quarters. The home crowd were delighted with the performance and especially the big three pointers from Jonathan Lawton, Paul Dick and Eoin Quigley. The early stages of the game were tight and with the sides level at 17 points each Ivan Bodganovic hit a purple patch scoring 7 points to see the Warriors lead 26-18. The Warriors continued to play well in the second quarter and with some big three’s they were 48-34 ahead at the break. Keith Jumper’s basket put the Warriors over the 50 point mark and with a strong defence and the fact that the Templeogue side were wasteful from the free throw line (6 from 12 in this quarter) the lead was out to 15 points entering the final quarter 64-49. In truth this game was over long before the buzzer and the Warriors secured a 77-68 win. Jonathan Lawton was the top scorer for the home side with 20 while Eoin Quigley had 18 and Paul Dick on 15 while Jason Killeen was Templeogue’s best player on 18. Warriors PRO Alan Cantwell spoke to Pat Price after the game and he said that “offensively it was a difficult game for both teams. Neither could get into a flow but our defence did very well and forced some important turn-overs. We are happy to get a win against such a good side and it sets us up for another tough encounter in the local derby”. It is a busy weekend for the side as the go to Killorglin on Friday

night for the National Cup first rounds against Keanes and then head to Dublin to face Killester in Clontarf on Sunday at 3pm in the SuperLeague. SCHOOLS AND LOCAL BASKETBALL: The Kerry Area Basketball Area season continues at pace and we will look at some of the Tralee results each week. The big Ladies derby saw Tigers beat Imperials 38-33. Mairead Kelly was the top scorer for the winners ending with 18. There was better news for the Imperial girls as their u18’s got their Division 1 campaign off to a winning start defeating St Paul’s 47-34. They then made it two wins from two as they defeated TK Bobcats to stake a claim as one of the teams to beat even at this early stage of the season. In the Men’s Division 2 Pool B St Brendan’s defeated St Joseph’s 64-53 at the Pres Gym while in the u18 Boys Division 1 Tralee Imperials were 69-47 winners over Team Kerry. There are a wide range of games at various ages all during the week and you can keep up to date with all the daily fixtures and results on the Kerry Area Basketball website, There were a number of Kerry players in the Post Primary Inter Region competition with the South West Girls reaching the Cup final and the Boys taking third overall. On the Schools front there were mixed results for Mercy Mounthawk with the u16A and u19 A Boys winning but the u19 and u16 girls went out of the Cup. The u16A game was the clash of the two Kerry sides with Mounthawk seeing off St Mary’ CBS The Green 61-40 in front of a packed hall. Tralee Imperials u18 Boys take on Griffith College in Gormanston on November 2nd TURKEY SERIES OF SWIMS CONTINUES: The second round of the Turkey Series continues in Fenit hosted by the Tralee Bay Swimming Club. This is the 6th year with numbers growing each year and all winter swimmers have to do is put e2 into the kitty. The draw for all the goodies will take place in the run up to Christmas –Its Getting Closer!! – and of course plans are also being put in place for the biggest swim of the year on Christmas Day. Out of the water the Irish Long Distance Swim Association AGM takes place in Dublin on December 1st with a number of Kerry members set to attend. Tralee’s Kevin Williams is the Munster Rep on the Committee and has been a Head Judge for the last 3 years. The AGM is open to all open water swimmers who want to make a difference to the Open Water Community throughout Ireland. BORN TO RUN GOES PINK! Tralee Born to Run members turned out in pink last Sunday morning
to take part in the Great Pink Run. While the main event took place in Dublin and Kilkenny, club members signed up for the virtual option and ran the 10kdistance on home turf. Everyone got into the spirit of the occasion and turned out wearing pink, with some fun fashion accessories also on display. Setting off from the Aqua Dome in glorious sunshine, the line of runners added a splash of pink to the colours of autumn as they headed out towards Blennerville before returning to town by Caherwisheen and Ballyard. The Great Pink Run is an annual running event in aid of Breast Cancer Ireland, more details can be found at www.greatpinkrun.ie. AT THE TRACK:
The main action at the Kingdom Greyhound Stadium is the first round heats of the Steve Kennedy Memorial A5 525 yards. The following night it’s the first rounds of the ON2 325 yards. Also this is the first of the regional nights with East Kerry/North Cork expected to bring big numbers. There is also racing again on Sunday evening with the first of the 8 races off at 6.35pm. ON THE GREENS – PITCH & PUTT: TRALEE PITCH & PUTT SIDE LOSE OUT AT SEMI-FINAL STAGE: The Tralee Scratch Gents Pitch & Putt team were hoping to reach the National Inter-Club Final but their run came to an end at the semi-final stage as they went down to the defending champions Fermoy on the Lakeside course in Templemore. The Tralee players got off to a poor start which left them chasing the game. Tralee’s three doubles pairs with Tony Blake and Jason O’Regan very unlucky to go down on the last hole of their game. That left the side 3-0 down but to their credit they fought back with Jamie Blake, Jason O’Regan and Alan Hobbart all winning their singles. However Fermoy won the other three singles to take a 6-3 win overall. Tralee will be disappointed as they won their previous encounter 5-4 over a very good St Anne’s side from Cork. But they will take some small consolation from the fact that Fermoy would go on to win a fourth consecutive title win over Cashel’s Larkspur Park in the final. The final open fixtures of the

All those planning to play in the last hour of the Scratch Cups should be at the course before 1pm. Also there is no event on Monday this year. ON THE GREENS –GOLF:
On the pairs competition that took place last Sunday the winners were Anton O’Callaghan and Graham Spring. They finished ahead of Gerard MacNamara and Noel Barrett with Ronan Shanahan and Eoghan Galvin third. In the Ladies Singles Cartherine Twomey took the in in mid-week while in the October Master Classic Final sponsored by the HR Suite the winner was Karen Gearon with Laura Rafferty just a point behind in second place. There were two senior Ladies competitions with Loyola O’Sullivan taking one of the competitions followed by Joan Costello and Mary O’Neill. On Monday Catherine McEneaney was the winner. Mary Barrett was second with Mary Quillinan was third. TRALEE GC HOPES TO BENEFIT FROM MARKETING INITIATIVE: Tourism Ireland and local golf marketing company SWING – South West Ireland Golf – were in Marrakech this week for the International Golf Travel Market. IGTM, now in its 22nd year, brings together more than 1,300 golf travel professionals from 65 different countries, including around 400 golf tour operators. The Kerry golf operators and the other Irish companies are engaging in four days of one-to-one, prescheduled appointments and networking – which provide an excellent opportunity to negotiate and exchange vital contracts for 2020.
