Medical Matters BOGUS ALLERGY TESTS CAN CAUSE REAL HARM BY DR DAVID BUCKLEY It seems to be fashionable to be allergic to some foods these days. All kinds of vague symptoms are commonly attributed to food allergies such as fatigue, bloating, cramps, migraine, rashes and coughs. However, most people with these symptoms probably don’t have true food allergies. Some may have food intolerance while others may be getting their symptoms from stress or a poor diet with too much sugar, caffeine, yeast, processed foods, fast foods or alcohol. True food allergies are quite rare. Food intolerance is much more common. It is usually as a result of the gut not being able to process certain foods such as lactose in milk (common in children), caffeine, cheese or red wine. It can only be picked up by excluding suspected food for a few weeks and then reintroducing it to see whether the symptoms are relieved and relapse if the food is reintroduced. There are many bogus allergy tests on the market at present as the whole area of allergy testing is unregulated in Ireland and anyone can set up an allergy testing service without having to prove that their tests are accurate or scientific. Many of these bogus tests are sold online or via pharmacies and health food shops. Websites and promotional literature can look impressive and convincing but lack any scientific validation.
All of these bogus tests are expensive and can fail to pick up serious allergies (false negatives) and often diagnose allergies to multiple foods when in fact there is no such allergy is present (false positives). This can lead to food faddism, inconvenient, expensive and restrictive diets that can lead to nutritional deficiencies. The following is a list of “Allergy tests” which have not been proven to be accurate or scientific: • York test • Fitzwilliam test • FoodTest • Hair analysis • Vega test For sound information about scientifically accurate food allergy testing talk to your GP or see Irish Food Allergy Networks (IFAN.ie).

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... St Brendan’s Park Residents launch “See Something Say Something“ On Tuesday night in the pastoral centre the committee of St Brendan’s Pk Residents Association launched the “ See Something Say Something “Text service with the help of local Garda Evan McNamara and Garda Shane O’Reilly, Aidan Kelly from Tralee Chamber Alliance and the man behind the service Brian Stephenson. Details of this fantastic service will be delivered to all the residents in St Brendan’s Park in the coming days. The Residents Association has great pride in looking out for the welfare of all the residents young and old and this service will be invaluable. There is a great community spirit among the residents in the park many of whom are there since the 1950’s when the estate was first built. This text service is already a great success according to the Gardai.
Anne wants you to give a little this Christmas! Anne Laide from Tralees famous Toy Store , Caballs , has come together with St Vincent De Paul to organise the hugely popular Christmas Toy appeal which will run right up til Christmas again this year . !Its simple , really ,” says Anne . We want all the children in Kerry to get a present on Christmas morning “ Anyone who would like to donate to this very worthwhile cause can drop into Anne and her staff at Caball’s Shop on Bridge Street. Then they simply buy a ‘Special Christmas appeal voucher’ for whatever amount they can afford. The money from the vouchers will then be pooled together and Caballs will then give an
extra contribution from the shop itself. Then these funds will be used to buy toys for Children all over Kerry. To make sure every child gets the present they would like, St Vincent De Paul is accepting Christmas lists from families and every effort will be made to ensure that each and every child will get exactly the present they would most like to see under the tree on Christmas morning . Anne Laide said the appeal is aimed at making sure every child in Kerry has a Christmas to remember . “On Christmas Day there is absolutely nothing more important than a child,” “ “People can call in and buy a voucher or make a donation for any amount and for
whatever they can afford,” she said. “Every single cent that is donated will go towards buying
toys for children who need them Don’t we all want to see every child in Kerry happy on Christmas Day.?” asks Anne
Everybody needs a new Rug! A Lovetts Rug! Well its that time of year again , when I get a phone call from one of Tralees longest established business . Pat Lovett Carpets who are located in Bridge Lane , right beside Shaws . Why , you may ask ...well its the time of their now famous annual Rug Sale .and they want to advertise it !..Michelle and Pat are busy reducing the prices of their entire stock of rugs as they want to clear the place before Christmas and make room for new styles in the New Year ! And what a selection they have ..as you can see, I nearly got lost between all the rugs !(well nearly !)That Halcyon Rug I was standing beside was 6ft x 4ft and now only €60 ! Most of the older styles (I couldnt tell which was which !) are now half price and even the new recent styles have 20% off . THere are big rugs , small rugs , shaggy rugs , Thick rugs , Expensive rugs , cheap rugs ...you name it , Lovetts have it ....and in most sizes too ! And what a time to have a Rug sale ...just before Christmas ...sure everyone needs a new rug for Christmas ...Hurry the sale is on for November only but I think the rugs will be well gone before then ! WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... Film Production coming to Cara Credit Union to film RTE series. Alleycats Films, a film production company based in Derry are coming to Tralee to film an exciting new TV series based on credit union lending called “The Borrowers” set to air on RTE 1 in Spring 2019. “The Borrowers” will follow credit union members across Ireland as they apply for their loans and follow them in the process of spending their money. Cara Credit Union in Tralee, Castleisland and Killorglin is one of four credit unions in Ireland chosen to take part in this series. Speaking to Grainne McCotter one of the producers “This will be an uplifting and insightful series, exploring the relationship between credit unions and the people of Ireland. As well as the funny and everyday reasons as to why people may want loans, we are also keen to highlight a number of social issues and
personal causes that are close to people’s hearts, stories that will have an emotional impact and potentially help people in similar circumstances. If your loan application is of a sensitive nature for example IVF treatment, debt from money lenders or other sources of debt etc., while you are in no obligation to take part, we’d be keen to chat with you about how we could reflect that story to raise awareness and help other people who may be in similar position to yourself. Alleycats Films TV producers will be in Tralee from Monday 19th November to Wednesday 21st of November to answer any queries you may have. Filming will take place from Thursday 29th November to Saturday the 1st of December at Cara Credit Union’s office in Ashe Street, Tralee. The team will be based at the credit union, and will be out and about

Made in Holland, these award-winning wallets are the epitome of style, simplicity and security. They protect your credit cards from card data thieves. Up to now, a huge range of different colours and types of leather have been available. However, this year’s collection takes SECRID to a new level of style and sophistication…

Bexblah Beauty HELLO MY BEAUTIFUL FRIENDS! I HOPE YOU’RE ALL HAVING A GREAT WEEK. This week I will be talking about products that I have used up fully, because they were that good! Laura Mercier Setting Powder - I bought this in February and literally just finished it this week and it is AMAAAAAZING. I use it to set my under eye makeup and foundation. Literally getting another one today.
Alien Perfume Theirry Mugler - it’s not often I use up a full bottle of perfume but this stuff is literally my number 1 perfume. I love it and every time I wear it I get asked about it.
Benefit Hoola Bronzer - definitely my favourite Bronzer, it’s not too dark and has zero orange undertones. I think the one I most recently finished was my third one? Either way I will be getting a fourth very soon.
Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk Foundation- My ride or die, most used and most complimented foundation. I am 100% obsessed with this, medium build level coverage, so weightless and photographs beautifully.
Jaclyn Hill X Becca Cosmetics Champagne Pop Highlighter - hands down my favourite highlighter ever. It has a lovely golden highlight that looks perfect. I bought this last January and the only reason it’s finished is because I smashed it. Devastating. I’m getting another one also. Clarins Makeup Setting Spray - I got sent this and I’d say I have about two sprays left in it. It’s an amazing setting spray that also hydrates the skin. That and the Urban Decay All Nighter spray are both my favourites.

FITNESS!
HELLO STRONG PEOPLE!
I hope you’re all having a great week and enjoyed last week’s post about getting up early. This week I’m going to share some of the books that I recommend.
The Chimp Paradox by Dr Steve Peters
CRUSHING IT! By Gary Vaynerchuk
Relentless by Tim S Grover
If you’re looking to pick up a new non fiction book, I highly recommend either of these three. Life Changing Books.
THE BIRTHDAY CUT
This week I have started a mini ‘Christmas Cut’, 1) because Christmas is coming very soon and 2) because I’m already thinking about all of the amazing Irish food I’ll be having once I come home!
WHAT IS A CUT?
To be “cutting” you need to be purposely and thoughtfully eating less calories than your maintenance (the amount of calories your body needs to stay the same). If you just eat a calorie deficit without resistance training and only cardio training you may lose more muscle than intended. For most people, holding onto hard earned muscle when cutting is paramount. Muscle is more metabolic than other tissue (fat included). It is also slow and takes time and effort to build, so don’t give it up easily. When cutting, do it properly! The last time I did a proper consistent cut was before I went to Thailand in April, so I feel ready to start another cut again to lean out some bit. By cut I do not mean eating very low calories or cutting out carbs!! I mean I will be SLOWLY cutting my calories over the next 4weeks. My main goal for this cut is to be consistent. As I have said before, consistency is absolutely key! I don’t have a set ‘weight loss goal’ or anything like that in mind, I just want to see consistent progress over time, that’s it!

HEALTHY RECIPES for 2018
Brownies for Everyone! Ooohhh November is a mean month, wet & cold and void of joy, too far from summer not close enough for Christmas cheer. So here is a wonderful treat to melt away the blues...Who doesnt love Chocolate Brownies!
CHOCOLATE BROWNIE COOKIES (makes about 3 dozen cookies)
INGREDIENTS • • • • • • • • •
1 pound chocolate, chopped 4 tablespoons butter 4 large eggs, at room temperature 1 1/2 cups sugar 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract 1/4 teaspoon salt 1/2 cup all-purpose flour, sifted 1/2 teaspoon baking powder One 12-ounce bag chocolate chips
METHOD In a large bowl set over a saucepan of simmering water, melt the chopped chocolate with the butter, stirring a few times, until smooth, about 7 minutes. In another large bowl, using a handheld electric mixer, beat the eggs with the sugar at medium speed until thick and pale, about 5 minutes. Beat in the vanilla and salt. Using a rubber spatula, fold in the melted chocolate, then fold in the flour and baking powder. Stir in the chocolate chips. Scrape the batter into a shallow baking dish, cover and freeze until well chilled and firm, about 1 hour. Preheat the oven to 160c and line 2 baking sheets with parchment paper. Working in batches, scoop 2-tablespoon-size mounds of dough onto the prepared baking sheets, about 2 inches apart. Bake for about 10 minutes, until the cookies are dry around the edges and cracked on top. Let the cookies cool on the baking sheets for 10 minutes, then transfer to a rack to cool completely before serving.
Let me know if you enjoyed them and we will continue our healthy eating next week and remember to send your quetions to: askchefnoel@hotmail.com

IT’S ONLY A JOKE I TOLD MY BOSS THAT THREE COMPANIES WERE AFTER ME AND I NEED A RAISE.... My boss asked “what companies? “ Gas, water and electricity.
AN ELDERLY COUPLE WALK INTO A FAST FOOD RESTAURANT.
They order one hamburger, one order of fries and one drink. The old man unwraps the plain hamburger and carefully cuts it in half. He places one half in front of his wife. He then carefully counts out the fries, dividing them into two piles and neatly placing one pile in front of his wife. He takes a sip of the drink, his wife takes a sip and then sets the cup down between them. As he begins to eat his few bites of hamburger, the people around them keep looking over and whispering “That poor old couple - all they can afford is one meal for the two of them.” As the man begins to eat his fries a young man comes to the table. He politely offers to buy another meal for the old couple. The old man replies that they’re just fine - they’re just used to sharing everything. The surrounding people noticed the little old lady hadn’t eaten a bite. She sits there watching her husband eat and occasionally taking turns sipping the drink. Again the young man comes over and begs them to let him buy another meal for them. This time the old woman says “No, thank you, we are used to sharing everything.” As the old man finishes and was wipes his face neatly with the napkin, the young man again comes over to the little old lady who had yet to eat a single bite of food and asks “May I ask what is it you are waiting for?” The old woman answers “The teeth.”

KNOW YOUR RIGHTS: GETTING A COPY OF MY BIRTH CERTIFICATE Question I am planning to get married and need my birth certificate to give notice. I can’t find it. How and where do I get a new one? Answer If you plan to get married in Ireland, you must give 3 months’ notice. To do this, you need to book a marriage notification appointment at a civil registration service. You need to bring certain documents with you to this appointment, including a full standard birth certificate and a copy of this certificate. TORQUING CARS! HONEST JOHN ANSWERS YOUR MOTORING QUERIES If your car has developed a fault, or for consumer advice, turn to Honest John by emailing honestadvice@telegraph.co.uk
INSIDE INFORMATION
I am a 6ft 7in 20-stone driver with a Ford Mondeo estate, but find access difficult (though it has ample space once I’m inside). Are there any better options within the Motability range? AL H.J Says A Renault Kadjar SUV has low sills and large, wide-opening front doors. Normally an MPV is far better than an SUV, so maybe a Citroën C4 Picasso (now renamed C4 Space Tourer).
A WISH CALLED HONDA
I do not need all-wheel drive, just ground clearance, but should I buy petrol or diesel? I would love to buy the HR-V as I trust Honda cars implicitly, but they do not do a diesel auto. JP H.J Says If you want 59mpg because of your huge mileage, get an HR-V 1.6i DTEC - but you can’t have automatic as well. If you want auto, get a C-HR hybrid that should do 50mpg-plus.
AUTOMATIC LOVER
On a budget of £20,000 I’m looking for a new/nearly new petrol car with reliable automatic gearbox. I currently have a VW Golf and would like a similar ride and level of seat comfort for long journeys. What should I consider? SH HJ says ... It’s worth considering a Peugeot 308 1.2 Puretech 130 EAT6, which has an excellent compact torque converter auto. Ditto the Mazda3 2.0 Skyactiv G six-speed torque converter auto.
THE MEANING OF LIFE
You advise owners of the Ford Focus and various Volkswagens to change the timing belts of their cars at 60,000 miles or five years. Does this advice apply to all makes? The maintenance guide for my 2012 Citroen C5 2.0 HDi 160, which has done 85,000 miles, says it should be changed at 100,000 miles or 10 years, whichever comes first, and that service schedule was confirmed by my Citroen dealer. Should I change the belt on my car now just in case? RD H.J. Says ..... After it became clear that the life of these belts wasn’t quite as long as had been predicted, many manufacturers introduced shorter replacement intervals. If a timing belt does snap, valves can hit pistons and effectively reduce an engine to scrap. If your dealer will guarantee in writing that the belt will not snap or come off and wreck your engine before 100,000 miles, take his advice. If he won’t, take mine.
EASY DECISION
I was thinking about buying a Honda Jazz or a Skoda Fabia estate. Would either of these be worth considering? BH H.J Says ... The Honda Jazz Sport with 1.5i VTEC 130 engine makes sense because it combines the practicality and versatility of the Jazz with a bit of performance yet still returns good fuel economy. It is available as either manual or CVT-7 auto and is a better bet than the Skoda Fabia, which is at its best with the 1.0 TSI engine, despite some reported clutch problems.
UNSPRUNG WAIT
Our 5,000-mile Audi Q3 Sport has stiff suspension. Any advice on how to make it softer? CG H.J. Says .... First, make sure the supplying dealer has removed the coil spring transit blocks from the suspension. If it’s not that causing the harsh ride then it is the wheels and tyres. The bigger the wheels and the wider and lower profile the tyres

FAI NATIONAl P.R.O. OF THE YEAR TRALEE’S GARY IS THE PLAYER OF THE YEAR: This is a very special week for soccer in Kerry and in Tralee in particular with the Victory Shield finishing today Friday, November 16th with two games at 1pm – the Republic of Ireland playing Scotland in Tralee Dynamos and Wales taking on Northern Ireland in Mounthawk Park. Those in town from the four associations are thrilled with facilities, welcome and the Rose Hotel and others. They were delighted to receive a Civic Reception from the Council who have been vbery involved in the tournament and KDL sponsors Denny / Kerry Group hosted a Delegates Dinner where the visiting heads of delegation paid glowing tribute to the KDL organising committee including the other host clubs St Brendan’s Park and Tralee Dynamos. We will have a further look back on the tournament next week. Away from Tralee and ex Dynamos and Kerry League of Ireland player Sean Kennedy who is now across channel with Sunderland was starring with the Irish u17’s hitting a cracker against Poland. Ireland will host the U17 Euro’s next summer so the squad will be picked from a number of friendlies so hopefully he can make the final twenty. Gary O’Neill - The Big Winner of the Week: And off the field there was a great night for Gary O’Neill who capped off a wonderful season by being named the Division 1 Player of the Year. Gary captained the side to promotion to the SSE Premier Division and was named on the Division 1 Team of the Year. And at the Awards he picked up the Player of the Year accolade which is well deserved from a player whose career path should be told to all aspiring young players. Gary spoke to this column saying he was delighted with the award where we first asked him how he felt on this special night for him and his family. Gary “It is a great way to round off a very special season and I am very thankful to all those who have been involved in my career from

the early days in Tralee. I was very lucky that my father was a top coach and along with a number of others at Kingdom Boys they gave me a great grounding in the game. I must also mention my mother Noreen who doesn’t always get the mention she deserves. She has been behind from my early days and has always supported me and I want to thank her for all she has done for me.” Gary had a good career cross channel but was happy to come home once the right offer came along. Gary “Yes, it was great to have the opportunity to play professionally and I really enjoyed my time with Wolves, Port Vale and Hereford United. But I was looking for more in my life and the offer from UCD to study and to play was too good to turn down. I have had three great years here and have my qualifications. Thankfully there are now more and more opportunities for young player at home with the underage League of Irelands so they don’t need to focus on going abroad as young as they used to. Also I would advise all young players to think about their career path and life outside of football whenever that might come about. “I really have been lucky as I was given the opportunity to have the best of both worlds, play at a high level and now at the highest, and to study in UCD. But of course making a success of both took hard work but it has all proved to be worth it.” So will Gary be with UCD when they kick off in the Premier in the new season? Gary “Of course I would love to stay with the club and would be more than happy to play with them in the Premier. However at the moment I am now a free agent so we will see what the next few weeks brings” WINTER SWIMMING CONTINUES: Round 4 of the Tralee Bay Swimming Club Turkey series took place last Sunday with the next round this Sunday. Nearly 50 swimmers took part last weekend where they enjoyed a swim and refreshments afterwards. This is all part of the build-up to the Festive season and of course the Big Friday16th November 2018
Christmas Day Swim. THREE MEETINGS AT THE TRACK: It is a busy week at the Kingdom Greyhound Stadium with a meeting on Tuesday night and three over the weekend. On Friday night there is a fundraiser for Listowel Coursing club featuring the final of their AO Buster 525 yards plus the first round heats of the Red Mills unraced bitch stake. On Saturday night the final of the KGBOA A6 525 yards is the highlight of the meeting. On Sunday the second SIOS program of the week takes place with an 8 race program starting at 6.35pm. The track is currently taking entries for the following sweepstakes: The Listowel Duagh and Lixnaw Comhaltas A7 confined A7 525 yards starting on Saturday November 17th and the St Oliver’s National School A1 525 confined starting on Friday November 16th. They are also looking for entries for two major stakes – the newly sponsored Tilemaster Kingdom Derby AAO 525 yards starting on Friday November 30th and the KGOBA / KGSSC A3 confined A3 525 yards for 36-48 greyhounds with a winner’s prize of e5000 if the stake fills. All entries go to the Racing Office on 061 448057. TRALEE BC READY FOR ITS BIG DAY: The Tralee Bay Boxing Club is getting set for its annual tournament which takes place on Sunday November 25th. Joining boxers from the host club will be fighters from Castleisland, Ballybunion, Listowel as well as from Tipperary and Limerick clubs. The major prizes on the day will be the Brassil and Kelliher Cups which will be presented on the day. This is an important day in the boxing calendar as it’s a good build up to the Cork and Limerick League as well as the Munster championships. Amongst those taking to the ring will be Irish and Munster champions as well as winners at the Wexford and Monkstown Cups. Some great battles in the ring are expected to take place and our local boxers would love some support on the day.
FATHER AND SON HELP STAR OVERCOME THE WARRIORS: Belfast Star were always going to be tough opposition for Garvey’s Tralee Warrior and so it proved as the visitors won by 10 points in the Complex last weekend. Belfast Star now top the SuperLeague but the Tralee side are still well in contention. For a person to have their son played at the highest level and to be coaching him must be a wonderful feeling. Adrian Fulton had that experience in Tralee on Saturday night with his 16 year old son CJ playing an important part in the win. Speaking afterwards Adrian said “we are delighted with him and we didn’t seem him playing as much as his is. But with injuries he has stepped up and grasped it and that’s terrific. In the game both sides had periods of dominance but the Lakers will again be disappointed that they were unable to hold onto what looked like a winning lead. The Warriors led by 8 but Star were on the mark with 3 three pointers putting them in control and they held on to win. There was only a point between the sides at the end of the first quarter with the visitors leading 22-21. Star continued to lead early in the second quarter with their ability to score from inside and out a worry for the Warriors. But the home side battled hard and when Fergal O’Sullivan hit two three pointers of his own and with Paul Dick and Evans, Bogdanovic and Dumbers all scoring the Warriors were well in touch and were only down 2 at the break 46-44. With Donaghy leading the way in the third the Warriors had their best period and an 11 point run put them in front by nine before Star hit back and closed the gap to three, 66-63, with ten minutes to play. Those late scores gave Belfast momentum in the early stages of the fourth. There was only two between the sides with five to play. From here coach Pat Price will be disappointed as his side were given a number of chances due to Belfast fouls. But they hit only 4 of 11 and this certainly played a big part in their loss. They also had the pap at three points but then fouls of their own saw Belfast take back the initiative and they ran out winners by 10. For the Warriors Jordan Evans had 21, Janis Dumburs ended on 15 and Paul Dick hit 13. They face another testing trip next weekend as PRO Alan Cantwell explains. “This Saturday we head to Oranmore in Galway to take on Maree. They have made an impressive start to their campaign with impressive wins over UCD Marian and UCC Demons. Tip-off is at 8pm in a game where the Warriors will be looking to get back to winning ways. TALKING SPORT WITH THE TRALEE ADVERTISER Tralee Parnell’s will officially launch the revival of adult camogie in the Tralee area on Friday November 23rd. The launch will take place in the Meadowlands Hotel at 8pm and all potential players, aged 16 and over with no maximum age limit are invited to attend with no previous experience necessary. Players will have the opportunity at the launch to sign up for an 8-week, pre-season circuit training programme beginning on Friday, January 4th at 8pm in Dynamic Strength and Conditions on High Street with a cost of e25 for the 8 weeks. The club will also welcome potential coaches, mentors, administrators, sponsors and all those interested in seeing Parnell’s fielding an adult camogie team starting in 2019. The Parnell’s AGM takes place tonight Friday November 16th at 8pm in the Kerins O’Rahillys clubhouse. This is the clubs 7th AGM following the re-founding of the club in 2012. The club head a very successful Awards night in the Rose Hotel when medals and cert were presented to the players for their efforts in the last season who did not already have their medals presented. The club was delighted to welcome special guests Lixnaw and Kerry hurling stars Martin Stackpoole and Shane Conway. The two spoke on the importance of daily practice to improve skills and also to enjoy playing hurling. Also present and presenting medals to the u6’s and u10’s were the club’s u17 players Darragh Reen, Ruari O’Sullivan and Devon Burns. Parnells hurling and camogie gear is available on the O’Neills website in time for Christmas. There is a link on the clubs Facebook page. Following the very positive 31st of October meeting of 2018 minors mentors, parents and club officers, Tralee Parnells are now making plans for our men to compete as a club at under 21 next season. The consensus at that meeting was that we will do everything we can as a club to give these young men an opportunity to continue hurling with Tralee Parnells. Now the club has embarked on the road to taking this plan forward. 2019 Dates for your Diary: Feile nan Gael will take place from June 7th to 9th with the tournament being hosted by Cork and Kerry clubs. Senior Scor District Board finals must be completed by Saturday February 2nd. Clubs from all over Kerry have a great record in the various competitions winning multiple Munster and All Ireland titles. KERINS O’RAHILLYS NEWS: The Grace Moran Walk, remembering the loved and respected lady who passed away 12 months ago, saw a huge crowd take part last weekend. With the early morning rain giving way to a rainbow the organisers were delighted with the turnout with the funds raised for Pieta House, Cuan Mhuire and MS Tralee. The club thanks all those involved in organising the walk and in supplying the refreshments in the club afterwards. The Seniors County League Division 1 final, against the inform Dr Crokes, has been fixed for Sunday December in Lewis Road at 2pm with extra time if required. The team has had a lay off since their County Championship defeat to Dr Crokes bar the Town League defeat to Austin Stacks so they will be coming in cold. But the squad will certainly be up for the challenge as its 5 years since they last contested a County League

final. The AGM of the club will take place on Saturday December 1st at 8pm in the clubhouse. All members are asked to attend the most important meeting of the year. As well as the reports the AGM allows members the opportunity to air their views on the future of the club. Nominations must be in by this weekend to the club secretary. The clubs wishes to thanks all those who helped out at the recent Church Gate collection and all those who contributed. Juvenile News: The AGM of the Juvenile club took place last Friday night with comprehensive reports presented by Chair Adrian Doody and Secretary Kathy McCarthy. The committee was returned en bloc for 2019 led by Adrian Doody. The PRO is Catriona Kennedy and Youth Liaison Paula O’Sullivan. The County Boards delegate is Cathal Foley with the committee members being Gerard Moran, Paul Ryan, Robert Pierce and Rowena Savage. The coaches were thanked for their refreshments and Declan Quill and Trish Moran were the first recipients of the Grace Moran Awards for their efforts and diligence during the season. The Awards were presented by Jade on behalf of the Moran family. The u12, u14 and u16 girls are looking forward to their days out. Their Awards night will take place on December 9th. The girl’s teams will begin indoor training in January with new players more than welcome. Lotto: There was no winner of the Lotto from the numbers drawn 4,16,22 and 31. There was a special presentation at the Lotto draw when club chairman Haulie Kerins marked the contribution of Mary O’Brien, who was celebrating her 90th birthday and continues to be one of the top Lotto sellers for the club. Date for the Diary: The Donal Walsh LiveLife u14 boy’s tournament will take place on the May Bank Holiday weekend 2019. The organisers are hoping to have a minimum 16 teams taking part. The club won the inaugural tournament this year when 8 teams took part. STACKS JUVENILE NEWS: The u15’s bounced back for a defeat by Ballymac in the Tralee Town Board Competition to defeat the same opposition in the final. The team was delighted to welcome Shane Bastible back from injury. It was a very good overall team performance and captain Evan Foley was delighted to accept the Cup on behalf of the squad.
Meath side that hit a last minute goal to draw the game and they went on to win the replay. This year the sides met in the semi- final in McDonagh Park last Sunday and again the Meath side defeated the Kerry girls. A late goal in the first half saw Kilmessan lead 1-2 to 0-04 at the half. Clanmaurice were well in the game until close to the end when a second Kilmessan goal saw them take a 2-10 to 0-09 win. Patrice Diggin, Jackie Horgan and Sara Murphy for the points for the Kerry side. BALLYFINANE NEWS: Maybe not officially sport but certainly there will be plenty of fun to be had in Ballyfinane. Gaeilge le Spraoi takes place in the Hall on Monday’s with all the activities such as Guess Who, Monopoly, Snap and Bingo and other games all taking place through Irish. There is also a table quiz for the National School on November 24th in the Shanty Bar at 7./45pm with tables of 4 costing e40. Big change in the golfing world: Golf, like many sports, is struggling to keep its membership and attract new members. The sport is now hoping that the creation of Golf Ireland will help by establishing modern governance and embarking on a strategy to embrace equality and inclusivity. The new single governing body is the combination of three years work between the Golfing Union of Ireland and the Ladies Golf Union. Clubs across the country are now being asked for their approval so that Golf Ireland can become a reality. Affiliation fees will be e24 for adults in the Republic and £20 in Northern Ireland with juniors paying e5 and £3.50 While there are 183,000 members of both the GUI and the ILGU this represents a 20% fall since the mid-2000’s. Those in the game hope that Golfing Ireland will help to reverse this trend. ON THE GREENS: Castleisland – In the Seniors competitions this week Patsy Sweeney was the winner from Liam Martin and Domhnall De Barra. In the Xmas Hamper Round 2 Dan Nelligan took the won from Liam Collins and Liam Martin. TRALEE GC: This week’s major competition was won by Domo Lyne with Donagh Shanahan and Brian Lennon in third. OBITUARY... Tom Quirke Tom Quirke, 48 Casement’s Avenue, Upper Rock Street, Tralee, Aged 70 ; Devoted husband , loving Dad, Grand dad , Great grand dad, Father in law, Uncle ,Brother, Brother in Law, God father , neighbour and friend . A man of many titles with the common theme of love for those he cared about and that were blessed with his presence in our lives. Never short of a kind word and a chat for all around him. Tom epitomised all that is good in the world. He devoted his life to his wife of 51 years, Maureen and his family. The youngest and seventh son of Mary and Mortimer Quirke who had eleven children, 7 boys and 4 girls, Tom and Maureen were blessed with three daughters and two sons Sue, Tom, James, Maureen & Liz, Sons-in-law and Daughter-inlaw. He possessed a quick wit and a sharp intelligence and was quick to laughter. Tom adored his four grandsons,
eight granddaughters and great-granddaughter and loved nothing more than to travel with his wife and family in the summertime. He exuded positivity and hope in all he did and showed quiet courage throughout his illness. A spiritual man, he never gave up his faith in the possibility of a positive ending. His knowledge and wisdom knew no bounds and his stories, tales and examples of life both practically and metaphorically will inform and guide those left behind in all aspects of our lives as we venture forth. A giant of a man, though quiet and unassuming, his influence is felt far and wide. His loss in this world has left us bereft and is felt keenly locally and globally by his wide circle of family, friends, neighbours and the medical team that cared for him and admired him so much. Tom Quirke an electrician by trade with a passion for cars and travel,
spent years learning all there was to know about different engines and instilled the same passion in his sons, grandsons and nephews. He loved nothing better than finding out how something worked and seeing if there was anyway he could make it better. A man of dignity, integrity, honesty, with a head full of knowledge, generously shared and a heart overflowing with love and pride in those around him, left us much too soon and without warning. He died as he lived, without fuss or bother, he simply fell asleep on August 7th , 2018 holding hands with his beloved Maureen . He said ‘I am not afraid to pass , I know that my son James and my brother Jerry will be there to meet me when the time comes ‘. His advice was ‘when the moment has passed , it is too late , so don’t miss the important moments’. Though departed from this mortal coil , his spirit lives on
in the horizon, the sea breeze , the rustle of leaves , and in the awe and wonder of nature. Our loss is Heaven’s gain , and we will carry him with us in all we do forever. Our world will never see his likes again . “Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam”

NOVENA TO ST. MARTHA O St. Martha, I resort to thee and to thy petition and faith, I offer up to thee this light which I should burn every Tuesday for nine Tuesdays. Comfort me in all my difficulties thro’the great favour thou didst enjoy when our Savour lodged in thy house.l beseech thee to have definite pity in regard to the favour I ask (mention favour). Intercede for my family that we may always be provided for in all our necessities. I ask thee St. Martha to over come the dragon which thou didst cast at thy feet. One Our Father and three Hail Mary’s and a lighted candle every Tuesday and the above prayer made known with the intentions of spreading devotions to St. Martha. This miraculous Saint grants everything before the Tuesdays are ended. No matter how difficult. E.R.
