The More you tell the more you sell!!!

LEGAL MATTERS CORNER MIRIAM MC GILLICUDDY ANSWERS YOUR LEGAL QUERIES

Ciara along with many of her friends are doing some of their Christmas shopping by buying online. She is wondering what are her consumer and legal rights are in relation to these purchases. The consumer directive of the European Union demands significant protection for people buying online within the European Union. The same protections do not necessarily apply buying outside the EU. These include the following: The right to have details about the business you are dealing with their name, trading name, address, email and phone number. A description of what you are buying, price including taxes and how long this applies for, delivery costs and costs of return, details of how to cancel your order and get a refund, change of mind form and confirmation if no change of mind applies, the cooling off period, guarantees and after sales service, length of the contract and how to end it and confirmation of your order. If the website does not have these details you need to query how above board they are and whether or not they will respect your consumer rights You should receive your goods within 30 days unless otherwise agreed. If it does not arrive within this timeframe you can phone to rearrange delivery time or cancel the contract and get a refund. If time was important to the contract i.e. it had to be delivered by a certain date you can cancel the contract and get a refund. Buying online or any transaction that is not fact to face has a cooling off period of 14 days which means that you can cancel your order within that timeframe. However you have to cover costs of return unless the goods were faulty. If they did not inform you of your right to cancellation the cooling off period is extended to 12 months. The cooling off period does not apply to gaming or lottery services, audio, video recordings or computer software when unsealed and used, swimwear or underwear unsealed, customable or perishable goods, newspapers and magazines, event tickets, hotel reservations and holiday rentals. Faulty goods mean entitlement to a full refund and no charge for return of the items. Faulty goods include those not of merchantable quality, not fit for purpose or not as described. If an online business did not grant a refund when it should one could bring a European Small Claim. Also worth trying is applying to your credit card or card company to have the charge that had been debited paid back in known as a chargeback. It is hard however to persuade the banking and other institutions to do this on a practical level. Lawquip: Online shopping brings a new meaning and excitement to “5-7 business days”. If you have a legal query or need further information on any item addressed in this column please send in your query to miriam.mcgillycuddy@gmail.com Miriam McGillycuddy, Solicitor, Derryana, Ballyard, Tralee, County Kerry. Medical Matters FOOD ALLERGY TESTING BY DR DAVID BUCKLEY Last week we talked about “bogus food allergy testing”. In this article I will talk about scientifically validated allergy tests available in Ireland today. True food allergies (e.g. to milk, wheat, gluten, nuts, eggs, etc.) are quite rare. While there is not one accurate validated test available today, there are a number of tests that, when combined with a thorough history and detailed examination by a doctor experienced in allergy testing, can accurately pick up food allergies in most cases. It is important to realise that many common symptoms such as bloating, diarrhoea, fatigue, joint pains and depression are not caused by food allergies in the vast majority cases. They are more likely to be linked with a poor diet high in sugar, caffeine, alcohol, processed or junk food or may be linked with stress.

Accurate scientific reproducible food allergy tests which are generally only available from doctors include the following: • IgE and RAST test: this is a blood test which is sent to a registered lab in hospital and can test for various items including foods, animal dander, house dust mite, pollen, etc. • Skin pick test: drops of various substances are placed on the skin and scratched through; positive reaction will result in swelling in the area which lasts a few hours • Exclusion diets followed by reintroduction of the food after a few weeks looking for evidence of food intolerance. • Food challenge: This is usually only carried out by doctors specialising in allergies where a suspected food is given to the person without them knowing what they are taking (blind testing) observing for reactions. Although none of these tests are 100% sensitive or specific, they are the best tests available today. They are all available in The Ashe Street Clinic. See www.fani.ie for more information on food allergies.

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... Festive Sounds under the Marquee in The Mall CAROL Singers and musicians will quite literally be covered during the Festive Season in Tralee with the introduction of an all-weather marquee on the Mall on the weeks leading up to Christmas. Tralee Chamber Alliance, with the assistance of the Kerry County Council Community Support Fund, will present a varied programme of live music to suit all tastes from local entertainers, theatre groups, Gardaí, post office staff and schools. Lisa Curran, who recently coordinated the successful Busking Festival over the October Bank Holiday Weekend, has once again put together an exciting variety of entertainment for everyone to enjoy in Tralee before Christmas. Performers including Seamus Harty, Chapter 2,

Lauryn Griffin, Owen Rua, Castlemaine Choir, buskers, Scotia Ensemble String Quartet, a samba group and a local magician as well as trad groups from Ardfert and Ballyheigue will entertain shoppers every weekend in December until Christmas Eve. Tralee Chamber Alliance’s Managing Consultant, Ken Tobin, said: “The atmosphere carol singers bring to the town centre is incredible each Christmas, and, where relevant, we know how valuable the fundraising element is to them. We’ve all seen it, each year school children and their teachers cowering under umbrellas in the driving rain while belting out their Carols. Well, this year schools, clubs or groups are welcome to make use of the Marquee in the Mall FREE of charge.”

Tralee Chamber Alliance particularly welcomes the recent decision by councillors in Tralee Municipal District to offer FREE on-street parking and in council carparks from 1pm daily from Monday 3rd December to Sunday 6th January. “The FREE Parking is an added incentive for more people to come to town to enjoy the live music on under the Marquee on The Mall,” said Ken Tobin. Any individuals, groups or school who wish to perform on The Mall in December are invited to contact Tralee Chamber Alliance by emailing info@tralee.ie, letting us know what date and time they need the marquee and subject to availability, we’ll slot them in. Maine Valley Turkey Gobbler Family Fun Day The Maine Valley Family Resource Centre in Castlemaine

is holding their annual Turkey Gobbler Christmas Family Fun Day on Sunday 25TH November between 2pm – 5pm at Castlemaine Community Centre. The event, now in it’s eight year, is free and open to all families. It has a Santa’s Grotto who should be arriving at approximately 2.45 pm, Tombola, games for children and free refreshments will also be available. The main attraction is the opportunity for people to take part in the Maine Valley Family Centre’s fund-raising initiative, aptly named the Turkey Gobbler Christmas Raffle. A limit of 500 tickets have now gone on sale at €5 each, with the winner collecting €500 just in time for Christmas. The draw for the prize is always great fun, involving children and parents in a grid floor game to uncover the winning ticket and THE WINNER! The game starts at 4.00pm. Tickets can be purchased at the event, or from a staff or management committee member or at the Community Centre. All proceeds are in aid of the services provided by the Family Resource Centre.

The President of Tralee Chamber Alliance, Aidan Kelly, said: “With the recent launch of the Tralee Voucher, a lineup of great music and events in Tralee, and free parking throughout the festive season, there are loads of great reasons to do your shopping locally throughout the town. Our team have launched a major advertising campaign for our members, promoting

ITT launches New Springboard+ Courses for January An additional boost has been given to anyone looking to progress their career, gain new skills, start a new career path or re-enter the workforce through €292,876 in new funding secured by IT Tralee for its Springboard+ offering. The courses, which will run from January 2019 at IT Tralee, are in the areas of Mechatronics, Building Information Modelling (BIM) with Revit, Quality Management, Biopharmaceutical Processing, Hotel Management, Food and Beverage Operations and Restaurant Operations. Commenting on the announcement, Brid McElligott, Vice President for Development, Research and External Engagement at IT Tralee, said: “This latest funding brings to over 2,000 the number of Springboard+ students enrolled at IT Tralee since the introduction of the Labour Market Activation programme. The success in linking course participants with employers 14

throughout the region, has resulted in many Springboard+ graduates now pursuing rewarding careers. This is due in no small part to the commitment of employers to embed a culture of lifelong learning in workplace development, demonstrating the value they place on their employees.” This funding is in addition to €1.2 million secured in June 2018 for 346 Springboard+ places at IT Tralee, West Cork-based Michael Harrington, who completed a Certificate in Industrial Instrumentation & Automation in 2017/2018 through the Springboard+ at IT Tralee shared his positive experience of the programme. ‘I have been able to achieve a qualification that 18 months ago I didn’t think would be possible for me. The primarily online format by which the course is taught makes it very accessible and has led in my case to securing a new job and with better career prospects.’ Springboard+ courses are Friday23rd November 2018

designed and developed in close collaboration with industry partners, to provide a dynamic pipeline of job-ready graduates, with up-to-theminute skills, and valuable qualifications. Places on new programmes are expected to fill fast and anyone interested in applying is encouraged to contact the Lifelong Learning

Department at IT Tralee. Priority will be given to qualifying early applicants. Further information on the courses available, eligibility criteria and the application process are available by contacting the Institute at 066 7191701 or by visiting www. springboardcourses.ie.

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... Castleisland Old Folks Home awarded €500 by Aldi’s Castleisland store staff Aldi is delighted to announce that the Castleisland Old Folks

Home is the latest charity to benefit from Aldi’s 2018 Community Grants programme. Aldi’s Listowel store staff have awarded the charity a €500 grant in recognition of its tremendous work within the local community and to help support its vital services. The €500 grant was presented to Liz Keane, Dan O’Sullivan, Neil Moynihan, William O’Connell and Donal McGlynn by Marion Spillane, Aldi’s Castleisland store “Charity Champion”.

Pictured are (L to R): Donal McGlynn, Dan O’Sullivan, Liz Keane, Neil Moynihan representing Castleisland Old Folks Home with Marion Spillane, Aldi’s Castleisland store “Charity Champion” and William O’Connell also representing Castleisland Old Folks Home.

Now in its third year, hundreds of charities have been supported by the programme to date with over €200,000 donated by Aldi. Commenting, John Curtin, Group Buying Director, Aldi Ireland, said: “We are delighted our Castleisland store employees have chosen to support the Castleisland Old Folks Home as they provide excellent services and supports to older people in the community.” “Supporting the local communities our stores serve is something that we truly believe in. Through our Community Grants programme and partnerships with both FoodCloud and youth organisation Foróige, we have been able to directly help many of the worthwhile charities and organisations making a huge difference to County Kerry.”

Tourism Minister Griffin kicks off Ireland’s tourism drive for 2019 at world’s largest travel fair Minister of State for Tourism and Sport Brendan Griffin TD from Kerry joined Tourism Ireland and some 70 Irish tourism businesses – at World Travel Market (WTM) in London this week. WTM heralds the beginning of Ireland’s international promotional drive for the 2019 season. During the three-day travel fair, the Irish companies have been engaging in thousands of meetings with British and international tour operators – to negotiate and exchange vital contracts for 2019. Organisers estimate that £3.1 billion’s (about €3.5 billion’s) worth of business was done at last year’s WTM. Ireland’s strong presence at World Travel Market is particularly important this year, in the context of Brexit and its implications for Irish tourism, in 2019 and beyond. With around 182 countries and regions all vying for business at WTM, Tourism Ireland aims to stand out from the crowd and capture the attention of the global media and travel professionals in attendance.

Minister Griffin said: “I am delighted to be able to attend World Travel Market, which provides an excellent platform for Tourism Ireland, and the participating tourism enterprises, to highlight Ireland’s world-class tourism experience to international tour operators. It’s great to see so many tourism enterprises from all parts of Ireland conducting hundreds of business meetings and doing a great job of selling tourism to the global travel trade. While there are challenges for Irish tourism as a consequence of Brexit, I am confident that the tourism industry can adapt quickly to enable continued growth from international markets. Great Britain is, and will remain, a very important market for tourism to Ireland. The Irish Government is committed to maintaining the strong business and cultural links that have existed between our two countries for centuries. I must commend Tourism Ireland, Fáilte Ireland, Tourism Northern Ireland and all our tourism partners for their concerted efforts to

Friday23rd November 2018

address the implications of Brexit and to keep the island of Ireland high on international travel wish lists.” Latest CSO figures indicate that this will be another record year for Irish tourism, with more than 8.2 million people arriving during the January to September period – an increase of +7%, or about 542,000 extra overseas visitors, when compared to 2017. Growth has come from all of our main market areas. Niall Gibbons, CEO of Tourism Ireland, said: “The large representation of Irish

tourism companies at World Travel Market once again this year is extremely welcome. Since the UK referendum on Brexit, Tourism Ireland has been closely monitoring developments in the British outbound travel market. As our nearest neighbour and our largest market for overseas tourism, Britain will remain a priority for us. WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... The sporting world loses a great voice with the passing of Weeshie It would be remiss of me not to start this week’s column with a few words on the late and great Weeshie Fogarty who has gone to the great stadium in the sky this week. All any of us who cover sport can hope to do is to give people the information they want in an entertaining way where they will want to read or listen on a regular basis. Weeshie did this with his Terrace Talk programme on Radio Kerry. And while may will say that it was a predominantly GAA programme, which it was, he always made time for other sports. I had the pleasure of being on with him on many occasions and he certainly had his own style of presenting. But at the heart of it was the ability to make even the most nervous feel comfortable. For many a radio studio can be an intimidating place so the presenter has a big job to get the best from his guests and Weeshie certainly did this. One of the other things that Weeshie showed was that it is never too late to follow your dream. He worked for almost 40 years in caring for those in St Finians,

people he often mentioned in his commentaries from the Fitzgerald Stadium. During that time he also had a successful sporting career in football and basketball. So when he retired he could have been forgiven for putting his feet up and watch his beloved Manchester United. But he didn’t. He started doing work for papers and voicing DVD’s and then as a co-commentator with the late Liam Higgins. From there as they say the rest is history. And he became a multi-award winning broadcaster who was known country-wide. Weeshie always had time for new people in the game and always had a word of encouragement. He once told me to never be afraid to ask for that interview – all anyone can say is no. And he was certainly never afraid and always had an eye for the next person to talk to. I had the pleasure of knowing Weeshie in work and in private and he was the same in both – a gentleman with a great love, knowledge and passion for sport. His passing is a huge loss to his family but also to his worldwide sporting family.

The sporting sphere has lost a great voice – he might be gone but through the radio archives he will live on forever. Some lovely words from our Sports journalist Pat

Harnett , Our thoughts are with Weeshie’s family ,from Chris and Colette (The Tralee Advertiser)

Rose Kirsten Mate Maher visits Kolkata with The Hope Foundation The 2018 International Rose of Tralee Kirsten Mate Maher is taking to her role as Rose of Tralee with all the compassion and humanity one expects from the winner of the title. Recently, like her Rose predecessors, Kirsten took her first overseas trip to Kolkata (formerly Calcutta) to visit The Hope Foundation’s projects with street and slum children. There she witnessed the shocking conditions endured by Kolkata’s most vulnerable children, those who live in the slums, dumps and streets of India’s 2nd most populous city. It is estimated that approximately 250,000 children sleep out on the street, homeless, hungry and without proper shelter. ‘Home’ is often no more than a ragged sheet between them and the concrete. Kirsten had a busy trip to

the Indian city, visiting many of The Hope Foundation’s projects, ranging from hospitals and medical clinics, to life skills training cafes, children’s homes and education programmes. Looking back at the pictures she took while over there and her experiences Kirsten says that she feels very emotional and appreciative of the trip. From Kolkata Kirsten appealed to people to lend their support to The Hope Foundation Christmas campaign: “You can feel a little helpless when you see this many people and children living like this, some of them have nothing, just maybe a blanket to throw on the ground at night and a mosquito net. But you can help, we want you to invest in this mission this Christmas, join our fight for justice for those who need it

Bexblah Beauty MAKEUP LOVER’S CHRISTMAS GIFT GUID

Almost everyone has someone in their life who loves makeup, it’s a given. But sometimes it can be hard to know what to get a Self Confessed Makeup Lover... I’m currently in Australia, but I decided to compile a list of makeup that is both available in Tralee and online! This Gift Guide is for all my fellow makeup junkies(and their boyfriends/girlfriends/husbands/wives you get the drill. Whether you love makeup yourself or you’re looking to buy a gift for someone who does, I’m sure this list will help!

Blank Canvas Brushes

Wet N Wild Mega Glo Highlighter in Precious Petals (under €5)

Personally, I can never have enough makeup brushes. A good brush is key to good makeup. I’m notorious for spending money on makeup and not enough on makeup tools, so I would really appreciate getting brushes as a gift. The Blank Canvas Cosmetics brushes are my favourite for many reasons. 1 - They’re so affordable, 2 - The quality is unreal & 3 - They have vegan brushes for all my animal lovers! I have selected a few of my must have eye brushes from Blank Canvas. You can also get the brushes in CH Chemist. (PS they more than likely have a Black Friday sale on)

Blank Canvas Cosmetics Master Series 1 Eyeshadow Palette €35

This is one of my most favourite palettes that I own. Blank Canvas are really upping their game when it comes to palettes! This is the PERFECT palette for anyone who loves a good brown smokey eye. So basically everyone! The pigment is amazing, you only need the tiniest bit of shadow, so on the flip side, be careful not to pack your brush because you will get fallout because of the high pigment. A great problem to have! If you’re buying a gift for someone who loves makeup, you simply cannot go wrong with this palette.

If you are looking for an extremely affordable yet high quality product - I got you! This highlighter is absolutely INSANE. I was out of my all time favorite (Champagne Pop) so I picked this up in Costello’s pharmacy in Tralee and I was so impressed. This is a great gift if you got someone for Secret Santa who loves makeup (who isn’t obsessed with highlighter) That’s my short but sweet Makeup Gift Guide for Christmas to hopefully help you out! Next week I will be doing a skincare focused one so watch out for that!

Benefit Hoola Bronzer €35

I wanted this bronzer for so long and finally treated myself to it. It’s by far my favourite bronzer, it’s the perfect shade to give a nice glow without looking orange. It also lasts ages!

The Jaclyn Hill Eyeshadow Palette by Morphe (ONLY AVAILABLE ONLINE AT MORPHE UK OR BEAUTYBAY)

If you follow me on Instagram you already know I’m extremely obsessed with this Palette it is PERFECT! It is SO versatile and pigmented. It’s only available online. But I 1000% recommend getting this for any Makeup lover (or yourself who am I to judge)

Rebecca

You can find me on Facebook ‘Bexblah Makeup’ or Instagram ‘Bexblah’.

But this week I’m going to focus on another aspect of your health that it’s important to take care of, your mental health and being happy in yourself. Especially at this time of year, for some people it can be tough. The next time you find yourself scrutinising something that you think is “wrong” with your body. Maybe focus on the person and soul inside your body, other than asthetics. Being a size 6 or 16 doesn’t determine who you are as a person and how healthy you are. Like everyone, I’m not happy 24/7. I have struggled with body issues, image issues and everything in between. I have finished school only to come out of two separate college courses, because I wasn’t happy in either of them. It took a lot to get to where I am now. Stay positive, a positive mindset always helps. When you are stuck in something in life that makes you that unhappy, be it a job, living situation, college course, or relationship, it is always best to take a step back and put you

and your mental health first. Because if you don’t, trust me, nobody else is going to do it for you. Talk about it. It doesn’t matter to who, just let someone else know how you’re feeling. You never know they might have the perfect solution, or at least they might make you feel a bit better. Exercise, even if it’s just going for a walk. It helps clear your head and overall you’ll feel better. If you are upset about anything, don’t try hide it or play it down because of someone else’s opinions. It’s your life and if something is upsetting you, it’s ok to be upset. Once you know ways in which you can cheer yourself up again.

Everyone just takes it one day at a time. So don’t feel anxious or pressured into doing anything if you feel it’s not for you. It’s your life, make a conscious decision to be the happiest, most positive person you can be. Try not to sweat the small stuff!

For any of you out there feeling overwhelmed because you don’t know what to do with your life or you can’t pick a college course or you’re confused as to what to do by a situation, remember, no one has all the answers. Not even the most intelligent successful person you know.

HEALTHY BONES AND JOINTS One of the most familiar physical signs of ageing is aching hips, knees and soreness in our bones and joints. All of us suffer from aches and pains from time to time either due to a specific health condition or perhaps from exercise or gardening or generally over doing things. Of course wear and tear and walking around on the same pair of hips and knees for decades can lead to soreness as can serious sporting activity but the good news is that there are natural ways to help yourself. And adequate intake of calcium at all stages of life, in combination with an active lifestyle will help ensure that bones are as strong as possible. Remember that without sufficient Vitamin D the body cannot absorb calcium. There are numerous calcium and vitamin D supplements available in both liquid and tablet form if you think you may be deficient in either. It is common sense that carrying any extra weight will put added strain on your joints so try to lose weight if you are experiencing pain or stiffness. Weight –bearing exercise such as walking is ideal or pilates which corrects the posture and strengthens muscles, alleviating pressure on joints. Make sure you are eating enough protein from meat, fish and eggs as well as adding lentils and seeds to your food, protein is needed to maintain bone mass. Most bone pain is caused by inflammation so taking natural antiinflammatories may help. Some of the better known natural antiinflammatories are: OMEGA 3 FISH OILS: potent anti-inflammatory and alleviates pain and swelling GINGER/BROMELAIN: both of which are known to aid inflammation in conditions such as arthritis.

DEVILS CLAW: traditionally used for over 30 years to relieve everyday aches and pains in the joints. Suitable for all types of joint pain such as back/muscle ache and pain and rheumatic pain. Available in both gel and tablet form. ZINCUFLEX: combines Ginger, Curcumin and Vitamin C. The main role of this complex is to help reduce friction between moving joints and help contribute to normal collagen formulation and function of bones and cartilage. NHP OSTEO SUPPORT: a special mineral and vitamin food supplement providing Vit D3, Calcium, Magnesium and Zinc to help maintain strong healthy bones. Antioxidants such as VITAMIN A, C and E also play a large role in joint health so up your intake of fruit and vegetables, or purchase a good quality ANTI-OXIDANT FORMULA. Another supplement to bear in mind is GLUCOSAMINE SULPHATE, taken to stimulate cartilage production and may also help to reduce pain and improve joint function. This is just a brief look at some of the natural products available to aid joint health so please ask in store where we are happy to discuss which products suits your specific requirements. Until next time, stay healthy.

IT’S ONLY A JOKE MY GRIEF COUNSELLOR DIED THE OTHER DAY..

HUNTER...

Two hunters fly to Kenya, where they bag six gazelles. As the crew is loading the small plane to return, the pilot says the aircraft can take only four gazelles back. “Last time, the pilot let us take all six, and he had the same plane as yours,” argues the first hunter. Reluctantly, the pilot gives in and takes off. But the little plane is too heavy, and it goes down. Climbing out of the wreckage, the second hunter turns to the other. “Any idea where we are?” The first replies, “I’d say we’re pretty close to where we crashed last time.”

POOR OLD MAN...

“Poor Old fool,” thought the well-dressed gentleman as he watched an old man fish in a puddle outside a pub. So he invited the old man inside for a drink. As they sipped their whiskeys, the gentleman thought he’d humor the old man and asked, “So how many have you caught today?” The old man replied, “You’re the eighth.”

A MAN GOES TO A JOB INTERVIEW.

“Well, everything looks great,” the employer said. “But I see here there was an 8 year gap since your last job. What happened there?” “Oh, I went to yale,” the man told him. “Neat!” The employer responded enthusiastically. “You’re hired! You start on Monday.” “Yay!” the man exclaimed. “I got a yob!”

A BLONDE WALKS INTO A SHOE STORE IN FLORIDA ...

And looks at the alligator shoes. “That much!! I’ll just go and get some myself!” she exclaims. “Good luck!” The clerk says. Later that afternoon he sees the blonde down by the river pointing a gun at a huge alligator, so he stops to watch. She shoots the alligator and kills it, the struggles to pull it on to the shore, right next to three others, all on their backs. She flips it over, then screams in frustration “this one doesn’t have any shoes either!!”

A SHERIFF WALKS INTO A SALOON,

and shouts for everyone’s attention. “Has anyone seen Brown Paper Jake?”, he asks. “What’s he look like?”, asks one shoddy looking cowboy. “Well”, replies the Sheriff. “He wears a brown paper hat,a brown paper waistcoat, a brown paper shirt, brown paperboots, brown paper pants, and a brown paper jacket.” “So what’s he wanted for?”, asks the same cowboy. “Rustlin’...”

TORQUING CARS! NO-DEAL BREXIT ... NOT AN OPTION FOR THE IRISH MOTOR INDUSTRY

Since the vote by the UK to leave the EU in June 2016, used car imports have been steadily rising and have doubled in two years, up to almost 100,000 from 48,000 in 2015. New car registrations fell by 11.2pc last month and by 4.4pc overall this year compared to 2017. Despite favourable economic conditions of strong employment and growth in GDP, car sales are unlikely to improve while doubt and uncertainty around the consequences of Brexit continues.

TOP 3 MUST-HAVE CAR GADGETS FOR XMAS Digital Breathalyser Recent changes to the law means drink-driving offenders will be automatically banned from driving for three months if caught with between 50-80 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood. Most of us would never contemplate taking our car with us on a night out, but you may still have alcohol in your system the morning after and unintentionally drink drive. The AlcoSense breathalyser range takes the guesswork out of knowing when you are safe to drive and is easy to use. Their range consists of single-use breathalysers that cost €3, then AlcoSense Light that starts at €47.99, the Elite costs €75, the Excel €119.99 and the Pro is €175 and AlcoSense Ultra is €300. All are available to order online at alcosense.ie or at halfords.com. Dashcam Sales of dashboard-mounted cameras are nearly doubling each year as the technology is now cheap to obtain and easy to install. The most obvious benefit is the role of the dashcam as a silent witness. In the event of an accident, first-hand evidence can be provided as a HD quality recording of the incident along with a map, time, date and the speed. They can be also very useful in resolving disputes or establishing exactly how a crash occurred and in reducing staged crashes or insurance scams. Plus, they are perfect for parents who allow their children to use their cars. Micksgarage.com has a range of dashcams to choose from, with prices starting from €23. Reversing camera Most child car-related injuries and fatalities occur in built up areas or near the driveways of their home. Most of these incidents occur when a driver is reversing and is unable to see a child behind the car. Take the stress out of reversing with a monitor and reversing camera. The EchoMaster Monitor and Reversing Camera Kit is available from Halfords, priced at €99.

SURGE IN IMPORTS PUSHES VAG CARS REQUIRING “PATCH”

The number of Volkswagen Group cars and vans voluntarily recalled for ‘fixes’ under the socalled ‘dieselgate’ scandal has soared due to the spiralling volume of imports that need work carried out. The numbers have surged to 151,186 from an initial estimate of 115,000 or so vehicles believed to be involved one way or another with the saga. They show that, out of the current total of 151,186 (original Irish and imports), Volkswagen passenger cars are running at 71pc completion with Audi at 70pc, SEAT 71pc and Skoda on 68pc.But when imports are taken out of the equation the number of original Irish cars which have had work carried out comes to 83,341, according to the latest figures. That is 74pc of the total anticipated to need some work carried out under the voluntary recall. As you can see, there are four marques (Audi, VW, SEAT and Skoda) and three diesel engines involved in the exercise. The 2-litre TDis engines require a software update.Work on those is estimated to take around half an hour or so.Work on the 1.2-litre TDi engines also takes in or around 30 minutes. However, those vehicles with 1.6-litre TDI engines involve both software and hardware upgrades. As a result, they take an hour or so to be sorted out. The hardware involves fitting a new flow transformer to help better regulate how fuel and air are burned in the engine. But as the new figures show, the level of imports is having a serious knock-on effect. It is estimated that initial estimates for Audi, for example, have nearly doubled over the period of the recall.Ultimately, it means that the full completion date remains something of a moving target, given that the number of imports for this year is expected to hit the 100,000 mark. The Volkswagen emissions scandal began in September 2015, when the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) found the company intentionally programmed diesel engines to activate their emissions controls only during laboratory emissions testing. TORQUING CARS! WE’RE ONLY SCRATCHING THE SURFACE WITH HYBRIDS AND IT’S TOO SOON FOR ELECTRIC VEHICLES, SAY TOYOTA ENGINEERS

Engineers are only scratching the surface of hybrid’s potential. That’s according to senior Toyota engineers - based in Japan and Europe - They also argued it is too soon for their brand to start making electric vehicles in greater volumes. For now, and for the foreseeable future, it is very much about making even more advances in hybrid technology. And there is a lot of scope, they said. Progress is being sought by, and delivered to, company executives on a regular basis, while the steady increase in sales worldwide suggests buyer needs are being met. But there is much more coming down the line, they insisted, as they push to make ever more efficient hybrids. That involves, for example, making even smaller and higher-density battery packs and systems. There can be a misconception that hybrids are all about fuel economy. They are largely so, but the mix between power and frugality can be blended to favour the former too. Hence the arrival of a 2-litre 180bhp petrol hybrid to flesh out the powertrains driving the new Corollas and to compete on power with 2-litre diesels.Understandably, the engineers were massively for hybrids - 12.5m sales worldwide speaks for itself. But they also brought a degree of reality to the energysource debate. They reckon the time isn’t right just yet for them to swing to electric vehicles (EVs) - globally, infrastructure, battery performance, range etc are still against wider application, they claimed. But they are ready to go EV quite quickly, if needs be, because their hybrids are already geared for full electrification. They have the ingredients, they said, claiming the switch will be easy when the time is right. And what about plug-in hybrids for smaller family cars such as the Corolla? Not really, they said. People who buy those cars are not inclined to spend the extra money on plug-ins.Mind you, with the €7,500 in VRT refunds and SEAI grants in Ireland, price may not be as big a deterrent as in other countries. They, however, were talking globally. And anyway, new research seems to show the hybrid is doing the business - with substantial percentages of time and distance covered in pure electric mode.

How do you rate the Citroën DS as an appreciating classic? I’ve been offered a good one at an advantageous price, so would it be worth buying? AG H.J.... It’s already a classic. I love the DS, but it probably has more potential problem areas than any other historic car. The one everyone wants is the late-model fuel-injected DS23 Pallas. The rising My friend’s 2010 VW Golf 1600 TDI runs at normal water temperature unless climbing hills or driving hard, when the temperature rockets. The system has been flushed and a new thermostat and water pump have been installed. There is no excess air pressure showing in the radiator and no sign of water in the sump oil. Any ideas? DH H.J..... Is it possible that the radiator fan is not switching on? If so, the reason for that could be a stuck sensor/sender switch in the cylinder block. It’s happened to me on older VWs.

FAI NATIONAl P.R.O. OF THE YEAR THE SPORTING WORLD LOSES A GREAT VOICE WITH THE PASSING OF WEESHIE:

It would be remiss of me not to start this week’s column with a few words on the late and great Weeshie Fogarty who has gone to the great stadium in the sky this week. He worked for almost 40 years in caring for those in St Finians, people he often mentioned in his commentaries from the Fitzgerald Stadium. And he became a multiaward winning broadcaster who was known country-wide. Weeshie always had time for new people in the game and always had a word of

encouragement. MARTIN AND ROY ARE GONE: In sport, like in many aspects of the media, things change at lightening speed. Sometimes things break for you and you can write about them and on other occasions the timing is all wrong. As I was sitting down to write this the news came that Martin O’Neill and Roy Keane had stepped down as Ireland managers. So was it the right time for them to go? A large percentage of management careers end in failure. There is no doubt that the last year has not been a success at the highest level of the game in the country. I certainly do not buy into the commentary by some that all is rotten in the world of the FAI. There are wonderful things going on as we saw over the last week in Tralee and we see every week in the Kerry Schoolboys and Girls League and in the Kerry District League. But like often happens in clubs or counties unless the top team is doing well then everything is a failure is certainly not the way to look at things. Back to Martin and Roy and their legacy. We certainly have had some good times. Qualification for the Euro’s and then to a Play-Off, wins over some big teams such as Germany, away wins that we struggled for a number of years to achieve. They have also had to overcome some retirements and injuries but this is not unusual in any sport. Friday23rd November 2018

They have brought in some new players and yes lost some targets but again this is nothing that all Irish internationals will have to face. From the fans point of view it wasn’t the most exciting style of play to watch but fans will forgive this if they are getting the results. In the last year we have not been getting those results. We have not been scoring goals but more worryingly we have not been creating chances. So what is the future? In the short term it will be to qualify – from third seeds – for Euro 2020 which is being staged in Dublin and for which the draw will take place in the next few weeks. The new manager will not have much time to get his stamp on the squad ahead of these qualifiers. In the longer term the younger teams are certainly proving very successful so the job will be to get as many of these u15’s to u21-s through to the senior team over the next few years. But we all know that management as any level is a results based game and for the present management team the results did not come in 2018. There were other issues around the squad as well so the time was up. It will be debated over the next few weeks as to who will replace Martin and Roy? Will it be Mick McCarthy’s return or a move to get Stephen Kenny to leave Dundalk? The issue with Stephen Kenny is that Dundalk have new owners who have put in a significant investment. Would he want to leave a job where he deals with players on a daily basis to one where he only has access a few times a year in the week before games. Michael O’Neill took that leap and made a very impressive transition for League Of Ireland management to International management with Northern Ireland – maybe now the time is right for the FAI to take that leap of faith. Time will tell. NEW MANAGEMENT MAKE CHANGES: Switching to a new management team that is in place and that is the Peter Keane led group in charge

of the Kerry team. They have announced a preliminary squad with some new players being called in like Jack Sherwood, Shane Ryan and Jonathan Lyne. Some have not been included and I am sure this is due to the type of player that the new management want and the style of play they will adapt. It must be remembered that Dr Crokes are still in club action so some of these players won’t be available until their participation ends. The date that they are all working towards is January 27th with Tyrone coming to town for the opening round of the League. They then go to Cavan so I am sure there will be many changes to the squad during the next few months before the Championship action begins. APTLY NAMED PLAYERS SIGNS FOR GARVEY’S: If there was ever a more aptly named basketball player than Keith Jumper I don’t think I have heard it. Jumper, a 6’8’’ power forward from South Carolina, was signed earlier this week, and will provide additional depth to the Warriors frontline. After a successful career at NCAA Division II Pfeiffer University, Jumper spent his rookie season in the Australian South East Basketball League. Garvey’s Tralee Warriors have signed 24 year old to their squad ahead of a number of key fixtures in both Super League and the Pat Duffy National Cup in the coming weeks. Coach Pat Price says he is pleased with his new signing, “Keith is a welcome addition to our roster. He arrives at a time when both Dusan Bogdanovic and Janis Dumburs are playing their best basketball thus far, so we believe we have provided necessary depth to the lineup. He is a strong finisher, rebounder and at 6’8’’ is a talented post defender.” Price says he will provide cover for the Warriors regular top scorer Jordan Evans, “The Superleague rules mandate only one US player at a time on the court, so his jobshare with Jordan Evans provides us with flexibility in line-ups as well as proper rest in-game for Jordan.” The Warriors face Black Amber Templeogue in the Oblate Hall in Inchicore this Saturday night in Super League ahead of the visit of UCC Demons to the Tralee Sports Complex for a National Cup quarter-final showdown on Sunday 3rd December Last Week The Warriors got back to winning ways with a 92-99 win away to Maree in Galway. While the Tralee side started well it was the home side that led at the end of the first quarter 14-9. Garvey’s rallied in the second quarter and a big three points by Evans on the buzzer saw them lead 52-40 at the half. The Warriors extended their lead in the third quarter and were 81-70 up with just 10 minutes to go. They held on for the win on a 99-92 score line.
