WHAT’S HAPPENING in Tralee...
LEGAL MATTERS CORNER MIRIAM MC GILLICUDDY ANSWERS YOUR LEGAL QUERIES
Denise says “I’m wondering what is the difference between an Enduring Power of Attorney and A Living Will ( otherwise known as an Advanced Healthcare Directive.) Is there a need for an enduring Power of Attorney if you already have a Will in place? Who and when should you put an Enduring Power of Attorney in place? What requirements are required to put an Enduring Power of Attorney in place? Thanks to Denise for this very interesting query. An ordinary will is simply a written document setting out your wishes as to what you wish to happen to your assets when you die. Usually in your will you will appoint Executors ( over 21 years) to manage your affairs after your death and make sure you wishes are carried into effect. For a Will a person simply signs the will in front of two independent witnesses and it is kept in a safe place usually a solicitors office. A living will otherwise known as an Advance Healthcare Directive is a different category of document in that it sets out what your wishes are in relation to your personal healthcare while you are alive should you not be able to make these wishes known e.g. due to being unconscious or having developed dementia. It is legally binding. You appoint a healthcare representative who will be your advocate for your healthcare wishes. It will set out what if any life sustaining treatments you wish for yourself. In contrast to a will it operates while you are alive. The will only operates from death. An enduring power of attorney is a document setting out two or more people to manage your financial and personal affairs should you ever lose your mental capacity e.g. through dementia or alzheimers. These are people you trust. The enduring power of attorney is a more complex document than either of the above as it has to be signed by the person making it, by the two attorneys showing they are willing to act as attorneys, by your doctor to say at the time of making it that you are know what you are doing and have mental capacity and by your solicitor similarly. You also appoint notice parties who are notified by registered post that the enduring power of attorney exists and who are to be consulted by the attorneys as to your wishes. This document sits in a drawer and has no effect while you still have mental capacity. It only comes into effect through registration in the wards of court office at present ( and later through the decision support service once this is up and running) when you are proven to have lost your mental capacity and registration allows your attorneys then to act on your behalf. If you have done a living will appointing a healthcare representative this healthcare representative has precedence in relation to healthcare decisions over the Attorneys in the Enduring power of attorney. Lawquip: An act of Good was defined as “ something no reasonable person could have expected” A.P. Herbert. Get your business noticed in Tralee’s favourite Friday read
IN BUSINESS Tralee Chamber Alliance do a very interesting series of profiles of people in business based in Tralee . This week , Georgina Downes Kieran Ruttledge bounces into the Aqua Dome café, bang on time and neat as a pin in a navy suit. The youthful 61-year-old is relaxed and ready to talk. We start with his accent.“I’m Manchester, born and bred, but my father was originally from Mayo,” he begins. His mother was a Galway girl. Like many second generation kids, he spent his summers in Ireland running around a farm, in this case his uncles’, bailing hay, milking cows, footing turf in the bog. “Four kids in my family, then my five cousins, and usually the neighbours’ kids too. We had no TV so we made our own fun. We played hide and seek a lot.” He smiles after each revelation, as if there’s more to it but he’s just not saying. Or maybe he’s simply enjoying the memories. Either way, the CEO of the Aqua Dome is good company. Did he feel English or Irish growing up? “Well, in Manchester we were called Irish and when we came back during the holidays they’d say the Brits have landed,” he laughs, then he shrugs. Nationality isn’t that important to him either way. Probably unsurprisingly, growing up in the shadow of the Manchester United football club, where all allegiances are directed towards soccer. In fact, he played professional soccer for two American college teams when he was 21; OkaloosaWalton Community College and Pensacola State College, Florida. How was that, I ask. “Great,” he grins. I can only imagine because he doesn’t elaborate. After 6 months in the States, Kieran returned to the UK to begin a career in the leisure industry. He completed a Leisure Management Degree and became a qualified trampoline coach, a swimming coach, an athletics coach, and a soccer coach. He ran competitively for Salford, in Lancashire until he was 25 and even went head to head with Sebastian Coe. He didn’t win, but still. Which does he identify with more, sports or business? “I’m a businessman now,” he says with a rueful smile, acknowledging the inevitability of age, but he admits in his heart he’s a sportsman still. Friday 22th November 2019
from the Tralee Chamber Alliance talks to Kieran Ruttledge .... read on
He’s very active, swims in the Aqua Dome pool regularly. Does he venture down the slide, I ask? “Yes.” I think he’s joking. “I do. You have to test the equipment,” he says, reasonably. Kieran is polite, affable and easy-going, just don’t get him started on the state of the Irish insurance industry. He doesn’t turn into the Hulk or anything as crass as that, but his frustration is palpable, seemingly justified and infectious. If you do start that conversation, you may well find yourself fighting the urge to march on Leinster House, demanding the politicians to more to loosen the legal profession’s grip on the industry, as I did. But there was no time for that. Kieran was about to take Johanna and me on a whistle-stop tour of the complex, including the parts visitors don’t get to see, and frankly, if it weren’t for prohibitive insurance premiums, should see: the spectacular and mysterious underbelly of the pool. It’s a different world down there; Tolkienesque, vast with concrete tunnels snaking around dark spaces like the roots of an enormous tree. Steam erupts from valves. Kieran explains the filtration system, the hydraulics, the temperature gauges. He skips around the maze briskly, Johanna and I oohing and aahing in his wake. The Aqua Dome was designed by renowned sports
specialists S&P Architects, with construction completed in 1993. The plan was to stimulate tourism in the region and it’s fulfilled its brief nicely; 140k visitors come a year, 60 per cent of those arriving in June, July and August. Kieran was head-hunted from the UK to manage the complex. Initially, he hadn’t intended staying long-term but one particularly pleasant night out with friends in The Oyster Tavern changed his mind. In 1994, his then-girlfriend, Jackie, moved to Ireland and they were married. The couple have two grown children. “Kerry is a fabulous place to live. Tralee has all the facilities of a city with none of the problems. We’re surrounded by beautiful scenery and I can play golf on one of the best courses in the world.” (Tralee Golf Club, located in Barrow). I get the impression things run smoothly for Kieran, but it’s likely he’s the swan, gliding gracefully on the surface while toiling away furiously underneath; like the Aqua Dome itself. He knows everything about the water in every pool; how it comes in, where it goes out, when it’s cleaned, how’s it’s treated, what the temperature is, even what it tastes like. To prove the point he tried it. Not a glug, mind you, but he left no doubt as to the water’s quality. The Aqua Dome doesn’t need him 5 days a week any more, he tells me, such is the proficiency of the team, so Kieran works as a consultant with his business partner Liam Bohan, advising local

authorities on running leisure centres. Is the Aqua Dome environmentally progressive, I ask. Absolutely. Kieran introduces us to Mags O Sullivan, their environmental ambassador and she takes us through the laudable policies recently adopted by the facility. It’s very impressive. Our tour is over and the interview complete. It’s been a pleasure. Johanna and I each receive free passes. So, the final question. Is it true they put something in the pool to make it change colour if a swimmer, eh, has an accident? Kieran looks me in the eye and leans in. “Well,” he says… Actually, I think it’s better, for operational purposes, if I leave that one unanswered.

Donal Walsh #LiveLife Foundation winner of the Young Humanitarian Award The Kerry-based Donal Walsh #LiveLife Foundation was named winner in the Young Humanitarian category at the Irish Red Cross Humanitarian Awards which took place in the Ballsbridge Hotel, Dublin last week Donal Walsh touched the hearts of the nation when he came to prominence through his writings and appearance on Brendan O’Connor’s The Saturday Night Show. While Donal battled cancer he became very aware of the effect his illness was having on his family and friends. Donal’s experience of fighting to live spurred him on to address, publicly, an issue which he was in a very unique position to comment on: teenage suicide. The #LiveLife Foundation was set up after Donal died, to promote his anti-suicide
message and to fundraise. Donal found there were not enough facilities in hospices, in terms of teenage mental health and faith, both of which were a big part of Donal's life. Donal's Foundation has now raised and distributed €500,000 to help develop these facilities. Donal also worked tirelessly and raised €65,000 for the children’s hospital in Crumlin.Donals parents Finbarr and Elma (pictured ) were "over the moon " at receiving such an award . The Irish Red Cross Humanitarian Awards Ball honours humanitarian achievements while raising much-needed funds for vulnerable children and families in Ireland and overseas. The black-tie fundraiser took place last night in the Ballsbridge Hotel,
Dublin. The awards recognise those who have had a humanitarian impact on the lives of others through volunteering, skill sharing, storytelling or fundraising and highlight the efforts of those who have given a voice to humanitarian issues. The judges who adjudicated the awards are: Martin Shanahan, CEO IDA Ireland, Peter O’Halloran, Brigadier General, Irish Defence Forces, Liam O’Brien, Director of Strategy & External Affairs Vodafone, Derry Gray, Partner, BDO, Aisling Reidy, Senior Legal Advisor, Human Rights Watch and Professor Hannah McGee, Dean & Chief Academic Officer at RCSI. Ivan Yates was MC for the night.

Warriors overpower Maree to stay top of Super League table Garvey’s Tralee Warriors remain top of the Super League table after an 87-67 win
away to Maree in Oranmore on Saturday night. In addition to the win, it was another night where results also went the way of the reigning champions with a number of their title rivals namely; Templeogue, UCD Marian and Killester all beaten in their respective fixtures. The win keeps the Warriors on top of the Super League table by virtue of points difference over DBS Éanna, Coughlan C&S Neptune and Belfast Star although Éanna and Neptune both have games in hand. The Warriors travel to the capital next Saturday night to take on the only team without a win in Super League – Abbey Seals Dublin Lions. KNOW YOUR RIGHTS: Question I am an Irish citizen. Can I apply for my first Irish passport online? Answer From 1 November 2019, Irish citizens (adults and children) living in the following countries can apply for their first Irish passport through the Passport Online service: • • • • • •
Ireland and Northern Ireland Great Britain Any country in the European Union Iceland Liechtenstein Norway or Switzerland
If you have not been issued with a passport in the last 15 years, you are considered a first-time applicant. If you live outside the countries listed above or do not want to use the online service you can still apply using a paper form. When you apply online, you must generate and print an Identity Verification Form. If you are living in Ireland, this form must be signed by a member of An Garda Síochána who must be satisfied as to your identity. If you are applying from outside Ireland, you can find a list of or appropriate witnesses on the form. If you are applying for a child’s first passport online, you need to confirm the child’s identity and guardians’ consent by sending your child’s Passport Identity and Consent Form to the Passport Service at the end of the online process. You may need to provide additional documentation, for example, a birth certificate, or documents relating to guardianship. When you have completed the online process, you will be told if you need to provide additional documents. You also need a digital photograph, an email address and a credit or debit card. The application process generally takes ten working days and is the fastest way to apply for or renew your passport.

Stormtrooper Fundraiser for Cian this Sunday in Manor! “At just two and a half, Cian Lenihan from Tralee was diagnosed with Leukaemia. For almost two years he has been battling this dreaded disease. This Sunday, a fundraiser will take place to raise money to help towards the constant medical expenses that Cian’s family face every day. Kingdom Trooper, an Imperial Stormtrooper, is taking time out from hunting the Rebel Alliance, to visit Manor West Shopping Centre and to help raise money for Cian and his family.
Please come along and support this fundraiser, meet a real life Stormtrooper, take photos, and be careful not to be mistaken for one of the Rebels! There will also be a raffle on the day for a 6 week unlimited access to classes in a local gym. Next Sunday, Manor West Shopping Centre, 12.30 – 5.30. May the Force be with you.”

The event was organised by Tourism Ireland, to continue to grow visitor numbers from Germany, our third-largest tourism market, in 2020 and beyond. The delegation from Ireland met with German, Swiss and Austrian tour operators, to convince the influential travel professionals in attendance to include Ireland in their holiday
programmes for 2020. Given that travel agents and tour operators continue to be an important booking channel for German holidaymakers, a key element of Tourism Ireland’s strategy is to work closely with the travel trade – both online and offline – in Germany. Peter Nash, Tourism Ireland’s Manager for Central Europe, said: “Our B2B workshop and networking event in Offenbach was a really good opportunity for our Irish partners to meet, and do business with, our tour operator partners from Germany, Switzerland and Austria.” Germany is our third-largest source of visitors and in 2018 we welcomed 784,000

'Toys Upstairs & 'St Vincent De Paul launch their Christmas Toy Appeal New store 'Toys Upstairs' at Kellihers Hardware on Rock Street, Tralee have joined forces with the local St Vincent de Paul to help ensure that every child in the area gets a toy they want from Santa this Christmas. "We hope the people of Tralee and beyond show their support and seasonal spirit by contributing. ' says manageress Sharon Sheehan "The local community can help the local kids in our community by calling into the Toy Shop upstairs in Kellihers Hardware or The Kerry Bookshop on Rock Street where they can buy a voucher or make a donation in the collection buckets we will have on the counters. You can buy a voucher for any value, with the total amount going to St Vincent De Paul to help them to get gifts for local children this Christmas. St Vincent De Paul will have a wish list from children and will try and get each one of them the gift they want for Christmas from the money collected. "

Beauty
HELLO BEAUTIFUL PEOPLE I hope you’re having a great week.
This week we are going to talk skincare. I have a new skincare routine that is working for me. I have my skincare down and I love that for me. If you follow me on YouTube ‘Rebecca Shortt’, I mentioned a few products that I’ve been loving, but I’m going to go through everything I am currently doing.
Cleansers - CeraVe
I am currently using all three of the CeraVe cleansers and alternate them throughout the week. I use the Hydrating cleanser, Foaming cleanser & the SA cleanser. I love these cleansers, they’re so affordable and are fragrance free and dermatologically tested. I definitely recommend.
Moisturiser
Charlotte Tilbury Magic Cream I tried this cream for 30 days before I mentioned it anywhere to really see how it works for me. And honestly, I love it. This product is so so hyped and I was apprehensive as to whether or not it would work for my skin. I have combination acne prone skin. It has made my skin feel so so nice, and given it such an amazing glow. This cream is more on the pricey end but a little bit goes a long way, and Christmas is coming, you could hint at it for a present.
Mask
Ole Henrikesen Cold Plunge Pore Mask My favourite mask of 2019. Hands down. LOVE IT. It cleans out my pores, makes my skin feel fresh and clean. I use it once per week.
NEW SKINCARE PRODUCT
I wouldn’t say this product is a part of my skincare routine but I have tried it recently and I think it will be making it’s way into my routine, especially coming up to Christmas. It’s the Bye Bye Makeup from IT Cosmetics. If you follow my Instagram @ rebeccashortt then you might have seen me using it. It literally melts your makeup off of your skin and makes your skin feel so so nice. Definitely one to watch.
Toner
The Ordinary 7% Glycolic Acid I have never tried anything from The Ordinary before this but I saw a few good reviews online so I said I’d give it a try. It has definitely definitely helped my texture. You use it once a day in the evening and my skin is loving it.

FITNESS!
Get your business noticed in Tralee’s favourite Friday read
HELLO STRONG PEOPLE I hope you’re all having a fantastic week.
Most people consistent with what they want, instead they set themselves unrealistic goals that they ‘have to’ reach within a certain amount of time. We see it a lot this time of year, people heavily restrict and diet coming up to Christmas, or even plan on what they will cut out when it comes to January. Rather than doing this torture to yourself, try something else… try to be consistent. Being consistent means knowing what you have to do, little by little, day in and day out, to reach your goals. It means that if you ‘mess up’ that you just go back to being consistent straight away. It’s all about balance and consistently doing what needs to be done. There’s nothing wrong with being a bit more relaxed when it comes to all things health and fitness related, I’ve come to realise that being 100% on track 100% of the time for me personally, is not living. BUT. Instead I try to do little things every day that will keep me consistent. This works a lot better and you don’t end up putting pressure or unrealistic expectations on yourself. Maybe you have some area of your life where you’re putting in some of the work sometimes, so you’re not reaching your full potential because you’re not consistent. This is your sign, be consistent, put in the work you know needs to be put in.
CURRENT FAVOURITE WORKOUT I’ve been really into doing full body workouts at the gym lately, just to change it up! Here’s my current favourite workout. WARMUP HIIT sprints (20 secs on 40 secs off for 10-15 mins) WORKOUT Weighted step ups 3 sets of 10 each leg Kettlebell swings 3 sets of 10 each arm Sumo Squats 3 sets of 10 Walking Lunges 3 sets of 10 GRACE FIT UK UPPER BODY SET • Bicep curl • Hammer curl • 2 arm tricep extension • Underhand kickback • Arnold Press • Bent over one arm delt raise • Upright row • Front raise Then sometimes after the workout to cool down I do 10 mins uphill walking.

Beat the Winter Blues
Most people are somewhere along a sliding scale that ranges from generally happy to completely low. However, many people can feel blue from time to time and this number rises in winter as some people may experience symptoms of S.A.D. (Seasonal Affective Disorder) commonly known as the “The Winter Blues”. Many of us sell ourselves short on mood. We may experience low mood but never consider seeking help or advice and just battle through it. The odds are most people can improve how they are feeling with the correct advice. Some of the causes of low mood may be: • Not enough natural light • Too much stress • Blood Sugar imbalances • Not getting enough sleep • Lack of exercise • Poor nutrition If you are experiencing low mood, feel tense and irritable, low in energy, comfort eating and have poor sleeping patterns there are some excellent natural remedies which may help. However, it is important to seek medical advice if you are feeling overwhelmed by any of these symptoms. Chromium – this helps keep blood sugar levels more balanced and as a result achieves a more positive mood B6, B12 and Folic Acid – The most promising nutrients for improving mood; which can be taken as a B Complex

HUNTER...
Two hunters fly to Kenya, where they bag six gazelles. As the crew is loading the small plane to return, the pilot says the aircraft can take only four gazelles back. “Last time, the pilot let us take all six, and he had the same plane as yours,” argues the first hunter. Reluctantly, the pilot gives in and takes off. But the little plane is too heavy, and it goes down. Climbing out of the wreckage, the second hunter turns to the other. “Any idea where we are?” The first replies, “I’d say we’re pretty close to where we crashed last time.”
POOR OLD MAN...
“Poor Old fool,” thought the well-dressed gentleman as he watched an old man fish in a puddle outside a pub. So he invited the old man inside for a drink. As they sipped their whiskeys, the gentleman thought he’d humor the old man and asked, “So how many have you caught today?” The old man replied, “You’re the eighth.”

T RQU ING CARS ! 46 O PREMIUM ADVERTISING Get your business noticed in Tralee’s favourite Friday read MICHAEL SCHUMACHER'S SON TAKES HIS RECORDSETTING FERRARI F1 CAR FOR A SPIN BEFORE IT'S SOLD FOR A PREDICTED £5.8MILLION
Arguably one of the most iconic Formula 1 cars in recent history, Michael Schumacher’s 2002 F2002, is set to go under the hammer at the end of the month - but not before his son, Mick, was given the chance to try out his father's record-setting Ferrari. The 17-year-old Scuderia Ferrari will be offered at the first ever auction held by Formula 1 in conjunction with RM Sotheby's on the eve of the final race of the 2019 season in Abu Dhabi on 30 November. But just weeks before it gets handed over to a new owner, Schumacher’s son - already an accomplished F2 racer - was given private access to drive it around the Italian brand's Fiorano test track. The Ferrari in question is the very one Schumacher drove at the 2002 French Grand Prix at Magny-Cours to secure his fifth of seven F1 drivers’ titles. It is taking centre stage at the upcoming auction, estimated by experts to go for between $5.5million to $7.5million, which works out at approximately £4.3million to £5.8million. A portion of the proceeds from the sale will be donated to Schumacher’s Keep Fighting Foundation, a charity founded by the family to continue the title recording-holding driver's charitable work. Mick Schumacher, 20, who already has 20 F2 race starts to his name including one victory, was given the opportunity to drive the very machine piloted by his celebrated father to first place at the San Marino, Austrian and French grand prix of that year. In fact, the final victory of the three at Magny Cours - six races from the end of the season - is still down in the record books as the shortest time in which an F1 driver has clinched a title. Shortly after his second retirement from F1 2012, Schumacher senior was placed in a medically-induced coma following a ski accident in December 2013 and his condition remains relatively unknown today.
ALARMING NUMBER OF CARS STILL HAVE POTENTIALLY LETHAL TAKATA AIRBAGS
There is a concerning number UK vehicles on the road that could be fitted with potentially lethal airbags, a new investigation has found. Auto Express says more than 1.7million vehicles registered in this country are still subject to outstanding safety recalls regarding defective Takata airbags, which, if deployed, can fire shards of metal into the faces and necks of drivers and passengers. The motoring magazine uncovered data that showed that 3.43million UK cars are affected but only around half have had airbags replaced. The Takata airbag defect was first recalled over a decade ago, with Honda first being forced to recall millions of cars worldwide due to the issue. Since then it has been revealed that around 20 manufacturers globally - including BMW, Jaguar Land Rover, Mazda, Mercedes-Benz, Nissan, Subaru, Toyota and VW - have used the Japanese safety devices, affecting in the region of 60 million vehicles. The majority of affected cars were built between the years of 2000 and 2015. As of February 2018, the airbags had been linked to up to 24 deaths. However, that figure has likely increased, with reports recently confirming that an Arizona man suffered fatal injuries from airbag shrapnel last June. The scale of the problem is like nothing else ever experienced by the automotive industry and has caused the biggest vehicle recall in recorded history. Auto Express uncovered data from the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) in December 2018 that revealed 2.9 million UK vehicles had been fitted with defective Takata airbags. At the time it said 991,333 - 34 per cent - of those bags had not been replaced. However, a fresh investigation by the motoring title found that the Takata scandal is far larger than previously thought. In total, some 3.43 million vehicles are impacted. Of those, 1.7 million have yet to be repaired. (Daily Telegraph )
THE £65,000 RANGE ROVER SPORT IS THE LEAST RELIABLE NEW CAR YOU CAN BUY (WHICH ? CAR RELIABILITY POLL UK )
If you forked out over £64,425 on a new car, you'd expect it to be pretty reliable. However, a new survey of 44,000 UK drivers has found that Land Rover's ultra-posh Range Rover Sport SUV is the least dependable new model on the market. According to the latest Which? Car Reliability poll, it scored an 'appalling' one star out of five for dependability for vehicles less than three years old, positioning it at the bottom of the reliability standings for a second year running. The consumer group said a worrying 42 per cent of owners of the hugely popular 'Chelsea Tractors' had to visit the garage at least once because of problems with their Range Rover Sport in the 12 months before the survey. And it wasn't just a single issue that had riddled the expensive SUV.Which? claimed there was an 'exhaustive list of problems', covering everything from the built-in sat nav, connectivity to the infotainment system, dashboard displays going haywire and the on-board computer software having glitches. Away from onboard electronic gremlins, owners of Range Rover Sports up to three years old also reported plenty of suspension issues - which tend to be very pricey in big SUVs - and recurring woes with parking sensors and reversing cameras. The likelihood of breaking down was also cause for concern. More than one in ten (11 per cent) of owners had to call out a recovery service at least once in the year before the survey was completed. That's four times the average for all vehicles, described by experts at the consumer group as 'pretty shocking for such a new car'. And the Range Rover Sport wasn't the only problem child for the British vehicle manufacturer. The smaller Land Rover Discovery Sport - which costs from £31,575 has also been causing problems for those who've bought them. More than half of the owners who completed Which?'s survey said their car had suffered at least one fault in the last 12 months. (Daily Telegraph ) Friday 22th November 2019

FAI NATIONAl P.R.O. OF THE YEAR BALLYBEGGAN COMEBACK? Credit must go to those behind the plans to host a new festival based in Ballybeggan Park to celebrate the Chinese New Year 2020 which is in Saturday January 25th. The details were announced by the Managing Consultant with the Tralee Chamber Alliance Ken Tobin at a launch attended by Minister for State for Tourism and Sport Brendan Griffin TD, members of the Tralee Chamber and other interested parties. The tourism team at the Chamber has applied for funding and is hopeful of getting the go-ahead in the next week as there is a short run-in to the proposed festival. This could be a wonderfully colourful and tasteful family event with food stalls, Chinese lanterns, dragons etc. Mr Tobin also talked about the possibility of hosting a major music festival on the Ballybeggan racecourse site within the next two years. While it is great to see such an underused facility being brought back to life surely now is the time for a ‘bigger picture look’ for the old racecourse. Should the music festival become a possibility and if the County Fair can be expanded this is a good basis to start utilising the facility. But I think that a committee of all the interested parties should now come together to look for funding for a multi-purpose venue that could become self-sustaining. For example the long term ain should be the restoration of the race course and getting the HRI to give back the dates that are gone to Killarney. But in the shorter term why not look at developing a cycling track and a cross country running track at Ballybeggan. It also hosts the Autocross trials so there could be room for a top quality rally cross track to host one or two events each year. While there now is funding for a skate park the will be in the town part there could be room for a family friendly facility. Also the introduction of a climbing wall, maybe a handball alley etc could be part of an overall plan. The venue is ideal for the music festival as its enclosed on all areas and with a little bit of work to internal roads to take the trucks needed for stages and the pa and lights etc it could be great addition to the regional venues that hold Friday 22th November 2019
events like Punchestown etc. The fact that it is so close to the town and also only a few minutes by shuttle bus from the train station this could be something that proves to be a win / win for the Ballybeggan venue and the whole town. But hopefully the Chamber can look at the bigger picture and start by holding an open meeting of all interested parties to put together a plan and apply for funding to bring the Ballybeggan Racecourse back to life. CLUBS AND ORGANISATIONS CELEBRATING SPORTS CAPITAL GRANTS: There was good news for a wide number of Kerry clubs and organisations as the latest rounds of Sports Capital Grants. From a soccer point of view I have to say it was a little surprising that only one club was successful. However a few had gotten grants recently including the Park. The big news from a Tralee town point of view was that the Kerry County Council was awarded e70,000 for the Skateboard Park that will have a multi-sport park. This was great news for those campaigning for this but it will need up keeping and will have to be over seen to ensure that the wrong elements do not ruin it for those who wish to enjoy their passion of skate boarding. Others from a North Kerry point of view some of the grants went to the Tralee Harriers Athletic Club who got e25,900 for the tartan lanes and High Jump area, the Tralee Sports and Leisure Centre were awarded e40,865 which will see them upgrade the gym and the changing rooms, Kerin’s O’Rahillys were given e24,481 and this will spent on fencing, the exercise track and floodlighting at their pitch, the Ballyheigue Golf Club who got e8,654 for re-siting of greens and tee boxes, St Brendan’s Trust and St Senan’s GAA for the renovation of their dressing rooms and replacing their goal posts. TRALEE CLUBS EXPERIENCE THE GOOD AND THE BAD: Last Sunday was as big a day as there has been on the Tralee GAA front for a long time. On the positive side Na Gaeil made the trip to Mallow a winning one when they saw off Cork Champions Kilshanning to reach the Munster Junior semi-final.
Getting out of Kerry in this competition is one of the hardest things and now that Na Gaeil have a win in Munster they could be on the start of a long run. They got off to a great start last Sunday and when Diarmuid Herlihy finished to the net they were 1-04 to 0-0 ahead. The Cork sides only score of the half was a late penalty that put a slightly better look on the scoreboard as Na Gaeil led 1-05 to 1-0. Na Gaeil made the start they wanted to the second half and another goal again from Herlihy and the game was in the bag with the final score being 2-11 to 2-03. The side were on top on all areas of the field which will please the management and they can look forward with confidence to another big game this weekend. They will welcome Michael Cusacks of Clare to Austin Stacks Park for the Munster semi-final on Saturday with a 1pm throw-in. On the other hand it was a bad day at the office for Austin Stacks, The Black and Amber travelled to face Nemo Rangers in confident form and it was hoped it would give them the opportunity to put a poor Garvey’s County Championship behind them. However we all know that things did not go to plan and Nemo ran out easy winners. This will hurt a proud club like the Stacks and they will need to re-group and they will. On a tough afternoon the Stacks manager Wayne Quillinan was really hurting when he did his Radio Kerry Sport interview afterwards. He deserves great credit for going on the air and being as honest as he was. It was not the way anyone would want to the All Ireland senior club championship campaign this year and it will again raise the debate on how Kerry selects it teams to go into Munster. NA GAEIL NEWS: Race Night: The Club’s fundraising Race Night will take place on Saturday November 30th which is an important night to bring much needed monies into the club. Horses cost e40 and are available from any Committee member. Race Nights are great fun and with Tote facilities on the night there is qa chance to win money while supporting the club. The AGM of Na Gaeil will take place on Friday December 6th and all members are invited to attend. The light training for the Fir na Gaeil and the Man na Gaeil continues on Monday and Fridays for the men and Wednesday and Sunday evenings for the men. Lotto: There was no winner from the numbers drawn 3,5,17 and 24 and the this week’s Jackpot was be e2,600 with the draws on Tuesday nights. Off the field and in the club house the Bingo continues on Monday nights and there are cards on Wednesday nights from 9.30pm with novice and senior games of 45. PARNELLS NEWS: The big night is getting closer. December 7th is the date when seniors hurlers and camogie players, club members, coaches and parents can celebrate all the hard

work of the season. The location is a mystery and the 50 seater bus will leave Tralee at 7.30pm and come back at 1am. Places must be booked costing e10 paid to Ronan Gilsenan (Tech Co located just off the square in Tralee). The 2019Winter Strength and Conditioning welcomes players including juveniles born 2006 or earlier plus coaches and parents. To book the place please contact coach Diarmud Brennan on 087 0956743. The AGM of Parnells was held last Friday and the officers and managers all presented their reports on another very good year from the club. The Chair and various participants thanked those outgoing officers moving to new responsibilities or taking up different positions. The Officer Board for 2020 will be led by the Chairman Dermot Reen and Vice Chairman Carmel O’SheaMoloney. A full list off officers and coaches are now in place for the New Year. AUSTIN STACKS NEWS: The clubs November Mass for the deceased members and friends will be celebrated at 6.30pm in the Church of Our Lady and St Brendan this Saturday. The annual church gate collection will take place at all Masses in the Tralee Parish this weekend. The clubs thanks in advance all those who will support the collection. The clubs Scor participants are now all in training for their forthcoming competitions. The quiz team are also brushing up on their knowledge for the county final where the winners will go straight through to the All Ireland final. There was a great celebration this week when the u15 and u16’s were presented with their 4 winners medals. The players were delighted that the clubs senior manager Wayne Quillinan took time out to present the winners medals from the Division 1County League / Division 1 Central League / Division 1 of the Town League and the 2018 Division 1 winner’s medals were also presented on the night. The players and mentors were thanked for all their hard work during the year. The Junior section of the club was proud of the seniors for winning the Club Championship even if last Sunday did not work out. However a number of the younger players will have gained valuable experience for the game. Juvenile AGM: The AGM of the club’s Juvenile side will take place on Tuesday January 7th. TRALEE TOWN BOARD AGM: The AGM of the Tralee Town Board will take place on December 4th in the KerinsO’Rahillys Club. The meeting is open to all involved in any club that takes part in the Town Board competitions. Motions mist be with the Chairman or Secretary by December 1st. COLLEGES FOOTBALL: There was a venue mix-up which meant the u19 The Green CBS v Cork’s Colaiste Chriost Ri didn’t take place and will be rescheduled for today Friday in Fossa at 1.30pm.

Mercy Mounthawk are out as they went down to Bandon High School and will now strugglwe to reach the knock out stage. St Pat’s News: There was no winner of the Lotto from the numbers drawn 8,14,17 and 30 and the jackpot this week will be e2800 with the draw taking placve this Sunday night in Keanes Bar. Well done to the senior team who secured their Division 3 status for next year with the defeated Firies in a tight encounter 0-14 to 0-12 in the last round of the County League. The St Pat’s Christmas Party for the u6’s and u8’s and siblings will take place on Friday December 13th from 5.30pm with pizza, party bags and lots of fun and games. Parents must let Fiona know that they are going by December 6th. For some seasonal entertainment away for the football field there will be a Rambling House on Sunday December 6th in the Blennerville National School. BALLYMAC NEWS: The fact that the senior team had to wait for nearly three months to play their final County League game was certainly not ideal. However everyone involved put in a great effort all year and were unlucky to end with a 1 point, 1-13 to 1-14 loss away to Dromind Pearses who needed to win to secure their Division 2 status. The club’s AGM will take place on Sunday December 1st at 2pm in the clubs meeting rooms. The AGM is open to all full members to attend. There will be some changes as some officers have served their 3 years and others are not going forward. Nominations and Motions must be in by this weekend. The u12’s, u14’s and u16’s were delighted to get their medals from Tommy Walhs at the Coiste na nOg medal presentation in Ballygarry last Sunday. The club thanked all the players, mentors and parents for everything during the year. The Ballymac Community Games will hold their 2020 registration in St Brendan’s Community Centre Ballydwyer this Sunday, November 24th, from 11am to 12 noon costing e5 per child and e10 for the family with activities from 6 to 16. KERINS O’RAHILLYS Well done to the u14 girls and their coaches who were crowned North Kerry Division 1 Plate champions this week with captain Katie Nix being presented with the award. The u16 Girls won the North Kerry Shield following a great year where all involved but in a huge effort. Our captains for 2019 were Katie Dwyer, Eugenie Kerins, Jennifer Murphy and Liana Williams who showed great leadership skills in every game they played throughout the year. Players from the club and Na Gaeil, Austin Stacks and John Mitchels represented the Tralee District and

won the Shield in a very cold day in Ballyrickard. The Senior Ladies put in a great effort in the North Kerry Division 2 Plate final before they went down to John Mitchels. The Ladies AGM date is to be confirmed while this Friday is their night out from 7.45pm in the clubs bar. This year we will have a Christmas Fair on Sunday, December 8th in the club from 12p.m. - 6p.m. It promises to be a great day . Our special guest will be Emma Larkin who has recently written and published a book about a girl playing football called ‘Izzy’s Magical Football Adventure’. This will be available to buy on the day and you’ll get to meet Emma too. The Juvenile Academy will also have their Christmas party that afternoon. WARRIORS WIN THE WEST: Garvey’s Tralee Warriors remain top of the Super League table after an 87-67 win away to Maree in Oranmore on Saturday night. In addition to the win, it was another night where results also went the way of the reigning champions with a number of their title rivals namely; Templeogue, UCD Marian and Killester all beaten in their respective fixtures. The Tralee side were ahead all game apart from the first basket that went to the home side and the Warriors led 22-12 at the end of the first quarter. The pushed on in the second quarter and were 17 up at the break 51-34. Maree tried hard in the final two quarters but they were unable to make any real dent in the Warriors lead and they have will be happy to get back to winning ways. Eoin Quigley led the scoring on 21 points followed by Ivan Bogdanovic on 16 and Jonathan Lawton with 13. Warriors PRO Alan Cantwell said that the Warriors are happy with this win. “This keeps us at the top of the Super League table by virtue of point’s difference ahead of DBS Eanna, Coughlan C&S Neptune and Belfast Star but Eanna and Neptune do have games in hand. The Warriors are on the road again this Saturday night as the travel to Dublin to play the only side without a win in the Super League – Abbey Seals Dublin Lions with the game tipping off in Clondalkin at 7.30pm. KABB TRALEE: Looking at some of the resent results in the various Kerry Airport Kerry Basketball Board competitions in the u16 Girls Division 2 Tralee Imperials defeated St Joseph’s 34-31. In Division 3 Pool 1 the Imperials girls this time lost out going down to TK Vixens 46-21. There were wins for Imperials Boys in the u14 Division 1 and for St Brendan’s in the 13’s Division 1. In the adult side of the game St Brendan’s were 90-61 winners over TK Killarney Cougars in the Men’s Division 2 Pool but Tralee
Tigers lost out to St Annes in the Women’s Division 3 Pool B 34-50 in the Farranfore Community Centre. TRALEE RUGBY CLUB NEWS: Here are some of the highlights from the action at the Tralee Rugby club starting with the u14 boys against Bandon. The u14s welcomed Bandon RFC to Tralee over the weekend. Bandon travelled with over 40 kids which was testament to the work they are doing in West Cork. Tralee opened their account with a great try by Paddy Lane and converted expertly. Bandon recovered well and recomposed themselves and gradually skipped up a gear to answer the Tralee boys. Tralee rose again against a very well structured back line and were very unlucky on two occasions not to score. Bandon got in again after some great intelligent rugby by the scrum half that had to admired and applauded by all. From here on in Bandon stayed dominant although a ferocious battle was still put up to the visitors. It was a morning of top drawer rugby from both sides and lessons learned for each team. Tralee knew they were in for a competitive match and they weren’t disappointed. Congratulations to Bandon for the win and we look forward to traveling to you in the New Year. On Sunday in the u16 Boys TraleeListowel U16s played Killorgli in O'Dowd Park, Tralee. Both teams came into the fixture looking for their first competitive win in Conference 2 the Munster U16 Club competition. The teams were evenly matched however a break from Oisín Kennelly, who displayed some fancy footwork, produced the first try of the game halfway through the first half. Edward O'Connor converted and the home team held that 7-0 lead at half time. The second half proved just as enjoyable for the spectators with Mikolaj Buja crashing over after sustained pressure from the pack. The boys were very focussed in defence as Killorglin battled back and the visitors were rewarded with a consolation try in the last play of the game which ended 12-5. They are away to Corca Dhuibhne this Saturday at 12pm. The Senior Men’s team were unlucky in their home game against Charleville on Sunday as they went down 34 – 0. While just 8 – 0 down at half time, three consecutive yellow cards, along with injuries to Conor O’Nuailleann and Ben O’Neill allowed Charleville to put their stamp on the game. Tralee showed strong improvements from last week’s loss to Thurles, but it wasn’t enough as Charleville ultimately ran out as comfortable winners. IN THE WATER: The Tralee Bay Swimming club Winter Turkey series continues this Sunday with organisers expecting up to 60 taking to the water. The swim will start at 11am and there will be some nice hot teas, coffees and treat afterwards. Swimmers are also asked to note that the Polar Plunge for charity also takes place this Sunday morning at 11am on Lockes beach in Fenit. OSCAR TRAYNOR UNLUCKY: The Kerry Oscar Traynor were unlucky to go down 2-1 away to Clare. They came back from 1-0 down after Clare went ahead from the penalty spot. A crunching Stevie O’Mahony tackle saw the ball played forward and William Courtney chipped it over the out rushing keeper. But the Brian Spillane / Timmy Lynch coached side went down to a good free kick even if the awarding of it was one that upset the Kerry side. They go into their last game at home to Limerick District in Mounthawk Park on December 8th knowing that anything less than a win will end their campaign. ON THE GOLF COURSE:
On the Castleisland Golf Course the winner of the Christmas Hamper Round 1 was Willie O’Leary with Kevin Kerins in second and James McAuliffe in third.
