Medical Matters MEN’S HEALTH BY DR KEVIN RYLE November is recognised as a men’s health awareness month (“Movember”) and aims to create awareness of men’s health issues such as prostate cancer, testicular cancer and mental health problems. TESTICULAR CANCER Testicular cancer mainly affects young men between the ages of 19 and 34 years. It is an uncommon cancer with approximately 170 cases diagnosed in Ireland each year. Most cases of testicular cancer can be cured, particularly if it is picked early. For this reason, it is important to be aware of what to look out for and for men to be performing self-checks of their testicles monthly to detect it early. Testicular cancer may cause swelling of the scrotum, a dull ache in the groin which may also be felt in the lower back and/or a small bump or lump on one testicle. For advice and instruction on performing a self-check see www.ie.movember.com, www.cancer.ie, or speak to your GP.

PROSTATE CANCER This is usually a slow growing cancer which is one of the most common cancers to affect men in Ireland. It usually affects men over the age of 50. You are also at increased risk if you have a first degree relative (father, brother or son) that was diagnosed with the condition. Many cases of early prostate cancer cause no symptoms. Sometimes if may cause difficulty or pain passing urine or blood in the urine/semen. There is no national screening programme for prostate cancer currently, but if you are over 50 years old, your GP may decide for you to have a PSA blood test which is a screening test for prostate cancer. The doctor may also do a rectal examination feeling for lumps in the prostate which may indicate that you could be developing prostate cancer. You should see your GP if you have any concerns about the issues discussed in this article.

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... Highest Accolade for Parknasilla Graduate The Irish Hospitality Institute (IHI) recognised the contribution that individuals make to the hospitality profession at their annual Founders Banquet in Dublin last Thursday.

Institute of Technology Tralee says “Keara is a deserving winner, her passion for the industry and her commitment to her own academic development whilst working full time is to be commended”

Kenmare native Keara O’Brien and Operations Manager at Parknasilla Resort and Spa swooped the Institute’s Graduate of the Year Award. Keara was nominated by her college the Institute of Technology Tralee (ITT) where she studied for her Degree in Hotel Management and was up against stellar competition from representatives from all the hotel training colleges in Ireland. Mary Rose Stafford, Head of the School of Business, Computing & Humanities at

Earlier in the year O’Brien won the Irish Hotel Federation (IHF) Kerry Branch student of the year in the non academic category and followed this with IHF Kerry academic award for the highest performing student. Tony Daly, Managing Director of Parknasilla added “Keara is an inspiration to all aspiring and motivated young hotel professionals. The academic programmes offered by the Tralee Institute present a great opportunity for young people

in the hospitality sector to further their education, as in Keara’s case, she achieved the ultimate reward, a Degree in Hotel Management whilst in full-time employment. We

are very proud of Keara’s achievements and we extend our huge congratulations to her. She has a bright career ahead of her.”

Kerry Airport attends Tourism Ireland 2019 launch Tourism Ireland has announced it will increase its spending by €10 million in 2019, to €45 million, and will launch its first new global advertising campaign in seven years to help attract more overseas visitors to the island of Ireland. The additional funding will allow Tourism Ireland to significantly strengthen its marketing programmes next year. The organisation is targeting record numbers again next year and aims to grow overseas tourism revenue in 2019 to €6.5 billion (+6%) and visitor numbers to 11.67 million (+4%). Tourism Ireland’s new global campaign – ‘Fill your Heart with Ireland’ – will launch next month in the United States, Britain, France and

Germany. From January 2019, it will be rolled out in over 20 markets around the globe. It will include TV, cinema, print, outdoor and online ads, as well as content for social platforms. The campaign will feature less visited attractions and locations and aims to attract visitors all year round. Details of the new campaign were revealed at the launch of Tourism Ireland’s marketing strategy and plans for 2019, an event attended by Tourism Minister Shane Ross and around 500 tourism industry leaders from around the country – including Kerry Airport. 2018 is set to be another record year for Irish tourism. Latest estimates indicate that, by year end, revenue generated by international

visitors will be around €6.1 billion, a +10% increase over last year, helping to sustain around 320,000 valuable jobs in communities across the island. Some 11.2 million people will have visited the

island of Ireland, representing a +6% increase over 2017, with growth recorded from all markets.

Kerry Irish Farmers’ Association reps visit Brussels. Concerns about the impact of cuts to direct payments to full-time farmers was

raised by a delegation of Irish Farmers’ Association representatives visiting Brussels recently. With direct payments accounting for 70pc to 100pc of farm income on tillage and drystock farms, the delegation urged caution on further reforms of the CAP and the need for an adequate budget for the CAP in the 2021 to 2027 period. Mairead McGuinness MEP and first Vice-President of the European Parliament said there is strong support in the Parliament for the view that the CAP budget should not be cut. Here the MEP is pictured with (L-R): Director of Livestock with the IFA, Kevin Kinsella, Helen O’Mahony and National Livestock Chairman, Angus Woods. 6

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... Planning Permission Lodged For Fenit Diving Boards Restore Fenit Diving Boards Campaign (RFDBC) committee has applied to Kerry County Council for planning permission for the development of new diving boards at the Bathing Slip, Fenit, Co. Kerry. The planning application was lodged in the name of Fenit Development Association of which the RFDBC committee is an accredited subcommittee, tasked with bringing the project to completion.Since the project was given the full backing of Kerry County Council at a meeting between the sides, we have been busy finalising the design with due regard to local tidal and weather conditions. The project was also designed to meet the standards and safety requirements of Kerry County Council and Irish Water Safety. The project is completely community based, so the entire cost of the work is being met by grant aid and local contribution. We are confident that the required funding will be in place when

required. The new diving boards will be an entirely public free-to-use aquasports facility and will include disability access. We are delighted that the planning application for the diving boards has now been lodged with the planning authority. We are confident that the application will travel trouble free through the planning process and we are hoping to have good news for the huge crowd that will gather on Christmas morning for Fenit’s annual Christmas Day swim. We intend to begin construction work on the site as soon as possible after planning permission has been granted We are very grateful to Kerry County Council which has pledged advisory support during the construction of the diving boards. When the project has been completed, Kerry County Council, which owns the property, will include the diving boards in its foreshore licence and insurance cover and will

maintaining the bathing slip to the highest standard. We are extremely grateful to our Architects and Engineering/ Environmental Consultants for their professionalism and expertise in designing diving boards which will stand the test of time at the bathing slip. We are indebted to the local sporting organisations and the general public for their support and goodwill for the project. Now that the planning

application has been lodged with Kerry County Council, Fenit is one step closer to the restoration of a much loved and badly missed sports and leisure facility which will have considerable sporting, social, economic, tourism and recreational value. On behalf of Restore Fenit Diving Boards Campaign Committee

New play area sponsored by Kerry Group opens at Enable Ireland Tralee This week saw the official opening of a new soft play area for children with disabilities at the Enable Ireland building in Tralee by Mr. Frank Hayes, Director of Corporate Affairs at Kerry Group. The space, which was sponsored by Kerry Group, will be used by pre and after schools groups, gardening and sports groups. Therapists at Enable Ireland will also be able to undertake some therapies outside rather than in a clinical environment. Speaking about the new play area, Enable Ireland Regional Fundraising Manager Sean Scally said “The soft play area is something that we have been hoping to develop for a number of years now. We are grateful to Kerry Group for supporting the project and making the playground a reality. I’d also like to thank Vincent Foley and the team at Kerry County Council who helped with many aspects of the project”. Speaking about the importance of the new play area, Maria Leyden from Enable Ireland Kerry says “It is essential that children with complex needs have access to an area that allows them to play in a safe and controlled environment. This outdoor play area will promote physical development providing proven health benefits and facilitate children in learning about risk and challenges in a natural environment.” Frank Hayes Director of Corporate Affairs says “Kerry Group is delighted to partner with Enable Ireland in supporting and enhancing the lives of people with disabilities. It’s wonderful to see PICTURED - Niall Horgan director services Enable Ireland Cork & Kerry the impact that a play area like this can have on the lives , Maria Leyden manager Enable Ireland Kerry and Frank Hayes Director of so many children and families in Kerry”. of Corporate Affairs Kerry Group .. KNOW YOUR RIGHTS: GP VISIT CARD

Get your business noticed in Tralee’s favourite Friday read

Chilled out in The Imperial! Some of the relaxed guests who attended The Saturday Evening Experience at the Imperial Hotel last night. Entertained by the dulcet tones of Jack Regan on piano, with the tasty menu from Head Chef Marek, in the all new relaxing Lounge, and throw in a complimentary bottle of wine for two, a fabulous evening for all.

Question I am a full-time carer for my mother. I don’t qualify for a medical card but I’ve heard that a GP visit card for carers is now available. How do I apply to get one? Answer The rules for GP visit cards have changed. Now everyone who is getting Carer’s Benefit or Carer’s Allowance, at full rate or half rate, is eligible for a GP visit card. To get the GP visit card, you complete the registration form for carers. The form does not ask for information about your income – just your personal and contact details. You also need to get the form signed by your GP. You must choose your GP from the list of participating GPs. You can get a registration form, and the list of participating GPs, on medicalcard.ie or by calling LoCall 1890 252 919. You can also register for the card online at medicalcard.ie. When you have a GP visit card, you can visit the GP for free. It also covers visits to out-of-hours GP services. However, the GP visit card does not cover hospital charges. Prescribed drugs are not covered by the card but, if you use the Drugs Payment Scheme, there is a limit on how much you have to pay for prescriptions each month. At present, you pay a maximum of €134 in a calendar month for approved prescribed drugs and medicines for use by yourself and your family in that month. You can download an application form for the Drugs Payment Scheme from the Health Service Executive (HSE) website, hse.ie, or you can get an application form from your pharmacy or Local Health Office. Further information is available from the Citizens Information Centre below.

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... Now here’s a ‘good news’ story for Christmas “Frugal farmer’s” lost vintage watch in family’s hands thanks to Athenry antique dealer’s radio plea A VINTAGE watch, once owned by the late Peter Kinane, described as “a frugal farmer from Tipperary”, which was found by a Galway-based antiques dealer among the contents of items he bought from a County Clare pub, has been reunited with his relatives. Philip, Sadie, Mairead and Mary Kinane, all members of the late Peter Kinane’s family, were presented with the watch by Dave McDermott, the proprietor of Athenry Antiques when they met recently at his shop in Athenry.Dave’s father is local Tralee businessman Peter McDermott who owns the Playdium Dave came across the Omega Dress watch which had “Peter Kinane, Kevinsfort” inscribed

on the back earlier this year. After carrying out some research, he discovered that Mr Kinane had sadly passed away only a few months before the watch came into his possession. Dave immediately put out an appeal through the Dermot & Dave Show on Today FM for a member of Peter Kinane’s family to come forward to reclaim the timepiece and sure enough, thanks to the power of radio, it worked. After hearing about the watch Peter Kinane’s son Philip told Dermot & Dave: “I’m stunned, apart from the surprise of it, it’s a small bit emotional. We only buried this man a few months back and he never had a good watch in his life, that we knew about, but he has now. I’d like to thank everybody on behalf of the family, particularly Dave in Athenry Antiques and you on the show. This man wouldn’t spend money on an Omega watch to save his life. He was a frugal Tipperary farmer and he would have been very practical and antique watches wouldn’t have been his thing at all. He was a lifelong Pioneer, so what he was doing in a pub

beats me. I was inside the middle of a field nearly an hour ago and my phone started going berserk in my pocket. I thought someone was looking for a trailer or something. We spell Kinane with one n and that’s the spelling on the back and Kevinsfort is the name of the house. We are amazed, it’s a good news story and God knows, they are scarce.” Tralee-native Dave McDermott, who met Philip and other members of the Kinane family at his shop recently to present them with Peter’s watch, said: “We are of the opinion that the watch might have been presented to Peter in 1967 when one of his bitches “Kevinsfort Lad” won the Irish Oaks at Shelbourne Park, the biggest race of the year for a bitch. Perhaps Omega was the official timekeeper for the race. But the family, including Peter’s wife Sadie, really don’t remember him having it. The watch, which I assume was lost in Linnane’s Pub, Kilfenora, Co Clare in the 60s or 70s, has some value, around €450-€500 and I’m delighted to have been able to return it to Peter Kinane’s family.”

To learn more about antiques or other collectible items, visit the brand new online shop at www.athenryantiques.ie or contact Dave McDermott at Athenry Antiques, Sheehan House, Church Street, Athenry, email dave@ athenryantiques.ie.

Kerry Among 100 Irish City And County Councils To Apply For Free Wifi Funding has been secured to introduce free Wifi hotspots to public spaces in Ireland after 105 Irish City and County Councils applied to the EU scheme. Ireland will now be guaranteed at least 15 vouchers in this round. Kerry is among those that applied. The EU is making €120m available for local authorities over the next three years as part of the Wifi4EU scheme. Local authorities were invited to apply for vouchers worth €15,000 to provide free public wi-fi in town centres, parks, libraries and museums. The EU announced that 105 Irish municipalities applied. Ireland South MEP Deirdre Clune said: “There was a lot of interest in this scheme from around Europe. €120 million will available for up to 8,000 Local Authorities 18

across the EU by 2020. In this round 2,800 municipalities will receive vouchers of €15,000 to set up a Wi-Fi hotspot in a public space.” The first WiFi4EU call for proposals that took place from 7 - 9 November 2018 was very popular with more than 13,000 applications on the portal. As a result of this first round, with the total budget of €42 million, 2,800 municipalities will receive vouchers of €15,000 to set up a Wi-Fi hotspot in public spaces. Over 4,000 Local Authorities applied within the first 10 seconds of the opening of the call on 7 November. The Commission will be announcing the next winning Councils in December. WiFi4EU-funded networks will be free of charge, free Friday 30th November 2018

Bexblah Beauty HELLO BEAUTIFUL PEOPLE! I hope you’re having an amaaaaazing week!

This week I created my 2018 Christmas Wishlist, (yes I already shared this on instagram @ rebecca.shortt buuuut everyone isn’t on instagram so I’m also sharing it here) Obviously I don’t want ALL of this for Christmas but these are some things I would like.

Jewels by Durrani Name Necklace - Caligraphy Style - I have wanted one of these necklaces for YEARS. I’m just obsessed. I found this one on jewelsbydurrani.com and I love the font, how you can choose the chain style and length and you can get gold plated or solid gold.

Nike Air Max 2017 - These shoes are SO pretty, I think they’re a perfect dressy casual shoe whilst still being very cool.

THE JAMES CHARLES ARTISTRY PALETTE - I mean, how could I not want this??? IT’S STUNNING.

Alphalete Revival Leggings - I’ve never tried Alphalete leggings before but apparently they’re very similar to the LuluLemon Align pants sooooo, I put them on the list!

THE KEILIDH X SOSU COLLECTION - I have been a long time supporter of Keilidh so OF COURSE I need the entire collection.

BEXBLAH

FITNESS!

HELLO EVERYONE!

I hope you’re all having a great week. It’s now less than a month Christmas… and we all know what that means… I’m 100% in the spirit and no one can stop me! I fly home in LESS THAN TWO WEEKS?! Can we cope? NO. So this week I’m posting my annual ‘Tips for the party season’, as I’m sure many staff parties have already began and this weekend is the 1st of December. Yes, it’s Christmas Season. Yes, you might have 7 different nights out with 50 different people you haven’t seen in years, and yes you might have one(or 7) too many, stay up way past your bedtime and insist on getting curry chips on the way home. It’s the Festive Season it happens. What is very important, is that you have some sort of fitness balance and you don’t go into, “feck it I’ll start in January” mode from now on. Here are my top tips to ensure that doesn’t happen… Plan your “big nights”: You’ve your annual lunch with the girls, the staff party, couples night out and you’ve been invited to more things than you can count. You know you’re going to be going hard and do every single one of those 12 pubs, and Jesus, John is feckin home from Oz after two years next Tuesday so we’ll have to hit the pub then, and we all know it’s just plain rude not to go out St Stephen’s night. So, pick your “big nights”, and stick to them. During the day before them stay hydrated, eat a good breakfast and monitor what you have during the day better(1 pack of taytos instead of 10), and try to get some form of a workout in, 20 mins HIIT cardio, a walk with the dog, ANYTHING. Stay active: Do not, I repeat, Do NOT, walk out of the gym(leave behind your exercise regime) because “Feck it, it’s Christmas now”

and return on the second of JANUARY… well you can but 1) The gym will be packed the second of January and 2) You will not thank yourself, trust me. We all know Christmas is coming, it’s cold and dark and you’re tired, and yes you don’t have to go to the gym for 2 hours everyday, no one is asking you to, BUT, that doesn’t mean you can lie on the couch with a can of roses for 4 weeks, get out, walk the dog, do a few squats, a workout video on YouTube, go ice

start then”... NO MARY. If you have that mindset you will 1) Eat yourself into a food baby, 2) Put off starting in January ‘til February(Sure isn’t it Women’s Christmas the 6th), 3) Put on lots on unwanted weight. I’m not saying you should skip out on Christmas dinner, but you can make on conscious effort to not eat a 20 pack box of cheese and onion taytos whilst dreaming of the tin of celebrations for dessert after downing a good two bottles of wine since yesterday. And I know it’s Christmas and I know it’s a time for fun, but that doesn’t mean you’ve to let yourself go like kid in a candy store. If you have a little too much one day, balance it out by watching what you eat the next day, or just move a little bit more… it’s all about moderation. I hope you enjoyed my light hearted tips on how to not completely lose the run of yourself this year, but if you do… You better have a kick ass plan for January, next summer is going to be ALL about the fit toned gym bodies with amazing bums, just remember that before you eat that third helping of Christmas pudding!

skating, anything to keep active at least 3 times a week. It’s not much and you will thank yourself in January when everyone is starting their new stupid lettuce diets and freaking out that bikini season(lol Ireland) is only a few months away! HYDRATE: WATER WATER WATER. The least you can do in between the 12 pubs and mulled wine is drink AT LEAST 2-3 litres of water a day. It will help your body, skin, and energy levels. Dehydration is pretty on nobody. Don’t wait ‘til January: ‘Ah sure Mary it’s basically December now, too late anyway to start sure it’s practically January we’ll

LAUGHTER ....THE BEST MEDICINE ! A BUSDRIVER AND A PRIEST HAVE A CONVERSATION... The priest complains: “Every time i start preaching, people stop praying and fall asleep.” The busdriver replies: “For me it’s the other way around. When i shift into 5th gear and hit the pedal, they wake up and start praying.

WHO SAYS MEN DON’T REMEMBER? A couple were holiday shopping at the mall, and the place was packed. As the wife walked through the mall, she was surprised to look up and see her husband was nowhere around. She was quite upset because they had a lot to do and hence, she became worried that she called him on her mobile phone to ask him where he was. In a quiet voice he said: “Honey, do you remember the jewelry store we went into about 5 years ago where you fell in love with that diamond necklace that we could not afford and I told you that I would get it for you one day?” The wife choked up and started to cry and said, “Yes, I remember that jewelry store.” He replied: “Well, I’m in the pub next door!”

AN OLD LADY OFFERS THE BUS DRIVER SOME PEANUTS… An old lady offers the bus driver some peanuts…so the driver happily munches them. Every 5 minutes she gives him a handful more peanuts.. Driver: Why don’t you eat them yourself? Old lady: I can’t chew. Look, I have no teeth.. Driver: Then why do you buy them? Old lady: Oh, I just love the chocolates around them!

A MAN FLYING IN A HOT AIR BALLOON SUDDENLY REALIZES HE’S LOST. He reduces height and spots a man down below. He lowers the balloon further and shouts to get directions, “Excuse me, can you tell me where I am?” The man below says: “Yes. You’re in a hot air balloon, hovering 30 feet above this field.” “You must work in Information Technology,” says the balloonist. “I do” replies the man. “How did you know?” “Well,” says the balloonist, “everything you have told me is technically correct, but It’s of no use to anyone.” The man below replies, “You must work in management.” “I do,” replies the balloonist, “But how’d you know?” “Well”, says the man, “you don’t know where you are or where you’re going, but you expect me to be able to help. You’re in the same position you were before we met, but now it’s my fault.”

WIFE TEXTS HUSBAND ON A COLD WINTER MORNING: “WINDOWS FROZEN, WON’T OPEN.” Husband texts back: “Gently pour some lukewarm water over it and then gently tap edges with hammer.” Wife texts back 10 minutes later: “Computer really messed up now.”

TORQUING CARS! PEOPLE SURE DO ASK A BIG RANGE OF QUESTIONS ABOUT ELECTRIC CARS Here are seven that DrivingElectric.com has received and answered as succinctly as possible: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7.

What happens if my electric car is struck by lightning? There are protective fuses which will prevent damage to the car and its battery in the unlikely event of a lightning strike. Can I take an electric car through a car wash? You can wash an electric car in all the same ways as you can with any car. Do electric cars need special tyres? You can shop around for a good deal on replacements, just as you would with any other car. Can you plug an electric car in when it’s raining? Yes, with all the usual safety caveats, of course. Will the battery wear out? After 160,000km or so, you’ll likely still have 75pc or more of your car’s original battery performance, if not more. Can you tow a caravan with an electric car? You can, but you’ll be limited to choosing certain models, if this is important to you. Can you jump-start an electric car? You can jump start a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) or a standard hybrid vehicle, but a pure-electric car can’t be jump-started and must be properly charged.

NEW TESTS DRIVE UP PRICES OF SOME CARS

Tougher emissions tests have not yet heralded drastic price changes across the board, according to a survey of brands by Independent Motors.Increases vary enormously from marque to marque. Some have even enjoyed price reductions, but in many instances prices are up and there is still concern they will rise again next year as we near the final lap of WLTP. In the meantime, quite a few distributors are absorbing the 1pc VRT surcharge tax on new and imported diesels. However, several factors are muddying the water on what price increases are directly attributable to the tougher emissions pushing cars into higher tax bands. These are better equipment levels, costlier engines to meet tougher standards and facelifts for the 191-registration market. We asked all distributors what impact the new NEDC2 figures were having on their prices. Here, in alphabetical order, is what those who responded outlined. Audi said new models such as the A6 were already WLTP tested. The average price of the A3 has increased by €1,000 (but this included enhanced specification), and by €1,450 for the A4 (again, the price reflects higher basic spec). BMW announced a ‘price reduction’ across its BMW and MINI brands. The average ‘reduction’ is 5.1pc (€3,296 on new models), with MINIs down 3.9pc or €850 across the range. Citroen said WLTP pricing would be announced on December 1. Dacia’s Sandero is up €300, while Ford pointed out that it was impossible to quote an average increase. Some models are not affected at all. None of Honda’s vehicles has moved tax bands between the old NEDC and the current NEDC2. Hyundai told us that some models were unaffected and others were by up a maximum of €500. Jaguar Land Rover claim reductions on some models (Range Rover Evoque, Discovery Sport, Range Rover Velar), and price increases of 2pc to 10pc on others. KIA emphasised cars across the industry have gone up for several reasons: new NEDC2 technology (Ad Blue etc) in their case (€300-€400) but also model year changes, movement under new rules to a higher VRT band and VRT levy of 1pc on diesel cars. Only two Lexus models had price increases due to WLTP. That was primarily on entry-level grades, which went up €500. The vast majority of the range is not affected. Mitsubishi have price increases between 4pc and 6pc to date with some models. For MINI, see BMW above. Opel couldn’t comment on how WLTP will affect their pricing. Peugeot reckon average price increase as a result of the new tests is 0.83pc, or €268. Renault revealed their Clio’s starting price has gone up by €400 but includes a much more efficient engine. They’ve kept the Captur starting price unchanged on petrol while bringing in a €300 rise on the 1.5 diesel. SEAT’s increases in VRT are averaging 1pc. Skoda are claiming little or no movement in bands on NEDC2. There was a “very limited impact transitioning from NEDC to NEDC2”, according to Toyota Ireland. Some C-HR hybrid enjoyed a reduction in CO2 figures. Volkswagen’s average CO2 increase between NEDC (old test) and NEDC2 (correlated value from new WLTP) is on average two grammes, their spokesman told us, so there is “minor impact”. Volvo have absorbed all price increases to date. “Indo Motoring

FAI NATIONAl P.R.O. OF THE YEAR KEYBOARD WARRIORS NEED TO GET OFF THEIR PHONES: It has been another few days that has shown once again how fast things can change in sport. Martin O’Neill and Roy Keane were preparing for this Sunday’s Euro 2020 draw, which takes place in Dublin and then they were gone. Joe Schmidt was basking in the glory of beating the All Blacks and Ireland taking a clean sweep at the World Rugby Awards – Team of the Year, Schmidt winning Coach of the Year and Johnny Sexton the Player of the Year which was great from a Kerry point of view with his Listowel connections. The difference in these two departures was that the rugby team are on a high while the soccer side are going through tough times. But all sports go through ups and downs and rugby had its poor years as well. However the difference between soccer ‘fans’ and indeed GAA ‘fans’ and rugby fans is that you rarely see visceral posts on social media directed towards rugby coaches or the IRFU while for some reason its seems fair game to post comments on John Delaney and the FAI and to a lesser extent the GAA and county management. From the soccer point view it seems that John Delaney is fair game and while he is well paid, some of this is way over the top. The other thing that is often said is get rid of everyone in the FAI or the GAA. Comments like this make no sense as there are hundreds of people doing great work for both organisations on the ground and at a high performance level. It is the case in most sports from the club to county and indeed on the national front that if the senior team is not doing well then everything is a disaster. How many times have we read a certain club or county is struggling while the truth is the first team might not be going as well as fans hope but under these there are lots of great things going on? We have seen this with Munster, with Kerry and certainly with Ireland on a soccer front which is where I have the greater knowledge of. The underage Irish soccer teams at boys and girls level are enjoying

40

some very successful times and of course the underage League of Ireland at both boys and girl’s level have been a great success. There are plenty of examples at all levels of great work being done by Emerging Talent Programmes in soccer and Development squads in football and academies in rugby. But again if the main senior team is not winning then things are disastrous! So my call to all those keyboard warriors is yes have your say but remember these are people with families etc. Yes some are well paid but their families might still end up reading the comments. And the best way for all those who are so dissatisfied with things happening in their sport is to get out and go to a local game, support your local club or even better get involved. There are loads of ways to volunteer in every sport and then maybe when you are on the inside you might have a better understanding of all the great work that is being done at all levels of the various games. And who knows you might one day get into a position of responsibility and then see what it is like when things are said about your leadership of the club or county or higher. Finally criticism when constructive is good, debate is good but don’t post anything that you would not want to have posted about yourself. And get out and support and join your local club and you can change things from within – if they need to be changed! ST PAT’S NEWS: There was no winner of the Lotto from the numbers drawn 6,9,10 and 22. The next jackpot will be e3500 with the draw in Keane’s Bar on Sunday night. AGM: The Senior and Junior AGM’s of the club take place in the Community Rooms this Sunday December 2nd. The Seniors are looking for a new secretary and treasurer but also want anyone who wants to get involved in any way to attend. The Juvenile AGM IS on first at 2pm and would like all parents of the young players to attend to hear views on how the Academy can be improved for the coming year. The Juvenile section is also looking for Friday 30th November 2018

a new secretary. Seniors: The Seniors ended their season on a high with a victory over Churchill in the Lee Strand St Brendan’s Football Board Senior Championship Final. It was a very tight encounter with a goal from Paul McMahon late in the first half being the difference at half time with St Pat’s leading 1-07 to 0-07. Both sides hit 7 points in the second period with that goal proving the difference in the game as it ended 1-14 to 0-14 to see the seniors end the game on a high. It was a great way for Joe Costello to sign off with a trophy. St Pats Juvenile Christmas Party takes place in the Blenerville School this evening Friday November 30th with all being home in time for the Toy Show. All u6’s, u8’s and u10’s are invited with a nominal charge of e2 for the players and e5 for the adults to cover the costs of food and treats. Blennerville Derrymore CFR Christmas Bake fundraiser is on this weekend after Mass on Saturday and Sunday. The First Responders will also be bag-packing in Tesco, Manor West on Friday December 14th. Christmas Concert by the Curraheen Community takes place in the school on December 9th at 6.30pm. The Community Play School Christmas Concert and Family Day is in the NS hall this Saturday at 1pm. KERINS O’RAHILLY’S NEWS: This Sunday the seniors take on Dr Crokes in the County League Division 1 fina in Lewis Road. This is the first time they have reached the decider since 2013. Amazingly this will be the fifth time the two sides have met this season with the Crokes having won three of the games. It will be a tough game with the Crokes coming off their Munster Championship win and will be favourite to win by the seniors are well up for this game and will want to end the year on a high and are well capable of doing this. The worry is that the team has had a long break while their opponents have been playing competitive games which they have been winning easily. The game throws in at 2pm with extra time if needed.

AGM: The AGM takes place this Saturday night, December 1st, at 8pm with all members asked to attend this important meeting where members have the opportunity to raise any issues in relation to club or association policy. All players and mentors are asked to make themselves aware of the new rule changes that the GAA Central Council will be trialling during pre-season and in the Allianz League. Academy – The Christmas party will take place on Sunday 9th of December in Charlie’s Bar and Bistro and all families in the community are invited to attend. The u11, u12’s and u14’s had a really enjoyable day out in Mahon in Cork and their Awards night takes place on Sunday 9th after the Christmas Fair. The Ladies section is now recruiting for 2019 with indoor training starting in January. Lotto – there was no winner of the Lotto from the numbers drawn 3,13,25 and 32. BALLYMAC NEWS: There was no winner of the Lotto from the numbers drawn 4,14,17 and 21 and the next jackpot will be e7,500 with the draw in O’Riadas Bar: Following the club’s AMG the Chair for the coming year will be Diamuid Lynch with John Rice as Vice Chair, Mairin Ni Sheaghdha is the Secretary with Dave Slattery the Assistant Secretary and Data Protection Officer and Mike Brosnan the Treasurer. The club filled all the positions on the committee at the AGM bar that of Registrar. The Executive Committee for 2019 is as follows: Stephen O’Brien, Patrick White, Kieran Savage, Fionnán Fitzgerald, Bernard Cassidy, Helen Leen, Oonagh O’Rahilly, Pádraig Laide, Kevin Leen, Bridget Leen, Anthony Curran, Ger Collins, James Godley, Donal Rahilly. The Chairman opened the meeting with a minutes silence for deceased members of the club and then he thanks all involved in what was a good year for the club. Plans are now being put in place for the coming season. Ballymac GAA Strictly Love Dancing 2019 – the big fundraiser will take place on Saturday January 26th in Ballygarry Hotel. Tickets are now on sale through the club. There is still an opening for anyone who would like to take part and strut their stuff on the dance floor. AUSTIN STACKS NEWS: The end of season medal presentation will take place on Sunday December 9th in the clubhouse. The Tom Markham Cup will be there on the day as will a special visitor from the North Pole. All the young players are really looking forward to their rewards for all their hard work. The Mentors Night Out will take place in Connolly Park this

TALKING SPORT WITH THE TRALEE ADVERTISER Saturday night. All clubs depend on their volunteers and they certainly deserve to celebrate their contribution to the club over the last year. The club wishes all those who will be taking part in the early rounds of the various Scor competitions over the next number of weeks. Scor is a very important part of the clubs activities. Now is the time for club members to plan for a Irish language course in the West Kerry Gaeltacht. The GAA (district, county and provincial levels) provides financial assistance. Contact should be made with club officials immediately after Christmas.to avoid disappointment! The Juvenile section of the club will hold their AGM on Tuesday January 8th at 7pm. PARNELL’S NEWS: The club was delighted with the very successful recent meeting held to explore the introduction of adult camogie to Tralee. The club has grown over the last number of years to the position where they now see the need for such a team. A number of players spoke on the need for this team and there is a strong interest in training a panel starting on Friday evenings from January 4th. Apart from the players mentors will also be needed and there was a call at the meeting for volunteers. Kerry Camogie Manager Brian Kennedy explained the level of commitment required to compete in Camogie at the elite level and cited his own background coming through the underage to adult structures in the Clare hurling heartland of Sixmilebridge and the high level of endeavour and giving of personal time that is required and does pay dividends, when part of a combined team effort. The club has appointed its committee under Chair Dermot Reen for the coming season and all are ready for the year ahead. Plans for the 2019 season are now underway and a managers/ coaches meeting was held during the week to progress these plans. AT THE TRACK: This Friday night the highlight at the Kingdom Greyhound Stadium will be the Tilemaster Kingdom Derby first round heats. The first race will start at 7.42pm with this weekend also seeing the start of the Christmas Party season. There will also be racing on Sunday with the first of 8 races off at 6.35pm. The track is also looking for entries for the KGOBA/ KGSCC A3 confined 525 yards with a winner’s prize of e5000 and the event starting on Saturday December 9th. 100 Up: The management at the Tralee Track honoured two greyhounds on Saturday night for hitting the 100-race mark. These are Millridge Zephyr and Rosies Rambler while another greyhound,

Coolboy Bob, was given the same honour on Sunday. The names of these and other greyhounds who reach the 100 race mark are featured on a display unit on the ground floor which is a very nice feature at the Stadium. COURSING NEWS: The coursing action was across the border in Rathkeale with Ballymac Hugo and Ballymac Bingo winning the Limerick Cup and Derby Trial Stake. As well as those two wins for Liam Dowling there was further Kerry success when Tailteann Speed won his second Oaks ticket. Blades of Honour continued her great run taking the All Age Bitch stake. Southern Harbour was the winner of the Enniscouch Stake and Onlinesearch took the Mike Meehan Stake. This week the action is in Lixnaw with the three day meeting taking place from Friday starting at 11.30am BASKETBALL TO THE FORE IN TRALEE: It has been a great week for basketball in Tralee. On the Schools scene Mounthawk have made it to 4 Subway Schools All Ireland semifinals. The big one will be when the u19’s take on CBS Tralee in the Sports Complex on January 10th at 1.30pm. There was more good news when three players from the town made the Ireland u18 basketball squad. Head coach Paul Kelliher named 18 players and has included Daire Kennelly and Leeroy Odiahio from Mercy Mounthawk / Tralee Imperials and Rapolas Bulvydas from CSS The Green and Tralee Warriors on the squad that will take part in the FIBA U18 European Championships Division B in Romania in July. This weekend Garvey’s Tralee Warriors face a huge game as they welcome UCC Demons to the ports Complex on Sunday in the National Cup quarter final. The Warriors are coming into this game on great form after their second win away to Templeogue in a matter of weeks. Having beaten them in the Cup they were 99-93 winners at the weekend. The win has the Warriors in third place in the League in a game that was tight all the way through. The Tralee side had new signing Keith Jumper in action and they ended the first quarter down one 22-23. The home side extended their lead in the second quarter and were 9 ahead at the break despite some big three pointers by Garvey’s. Templeogue continued to lead until a purple patch mid-way through the third quarter saw the Tralee boys hitting 13 unanswered points to take the lead but only by 1. The Warriors continued their impressive play and led by 8 before the home side hit back and cut the lead back to one point.

Call Chris or Colette Tel: 066-7126399 or e-mail : traleeadvertiser@gmail.com

But the Warriors are becoming a tough side to beat and when they got opportunities from the line they were unerring and took a very impressive 6 point win. Paul Dick was the top scorer on 29 with Jordan Evans on 22 and Eoin Quigley hitting 13. A huge crowd is expected at the Complex on Sunday but with the Munster Swimming Gala taking place as well parking will be restricted. Stewards will be on duty to direct supporters to appropriate parking. BIG WIN FOR TRALEE’S WOMEN: On a week where Ballymac’s Ciara Griffin captained Ireland in their game in Twickenham against England the Tralee Women’s team had a big win in the Munster League Division 1. The girls hit a host of tries in their away win over Richmond. In other results in the Munster u16 Girls Conference B Listowel/Tralee went down by the minimum 31-32 away to Abbeyfeale. In the Munster U18 Conference 2 Newcastlewest/ Estuary defeated Tralee 27-5. This weekend in the Munster Club u18 Conference 2 Castleisland play Tralee at 11.30am while at the same time Listowel/Tralee face Abbeyfeale in the Munster u16 Conference 2. In the West Munster u14 League Tralee are away to Listowel while the u16 Listowel/ Tralee combination face Mallow. The Munster Junior League Division 3 has Tralee away to Mitchelstown. BIG DAY IN THE RING: The Tralee Boxing Club held their very successful Annual Tournament last Sunday with boxers from Limerick, Tipperary and Cork joining those from clubs in Kerry. Rathkeale were one of the most successful clubs at the tournament taking 5 wins from 7 boxers. The Sliabh Luachra club, based in Castleisland had a good day and had 3 winners – Dean Martin, Paul Browne and Liam Walsh. Other Kerry boxers who looked good were Jordan Goggin from Ballyduff as well as a number of fighters from the home club. It was a very good opening to the season for all the boxers and sets them up well for up-coming shows in Castleisland, Ballyduff and in the Limerick League. The focus will then turn to the Lerry and Munster Championships and for the best the trip to the National Stadium. The Tralee club thanks all the fighters, their coaches, the referees, judges and everyone who made the day such a huge success. KINGDOM WHEELBLASTERS NEWS: The Kingdom Wheelblasters took on the Ballybrack Bulls in a game that swung from end to end. In the end the Bulls took the win on a 23-36scoreline with the final goals coming late in the game. The club’s Junior team enjoyed their day at the IWA Sport Blitz hosted by the Shannonside Stealers in Athlone. Friday 30th November 2018

Well done to Niamh Buckley who scored her first basket in the All Star game. 2018 POLAR PLUNGE: On Sunday week the Winter Swimming club will be hosting their Polar Plunge in aid of the Special Olympics. Club member Brendan O’Connell won a gold medal at the LA Special Olympics so it is great to give something back. The club is inviting everyone to take part and donate as generously as they can. It will be a great way to warm up for the Big Day which is now only a few weeks away! You don’t even have to be a swimmer – just run in and out!! There will be hot drinks and goodies for all the swimmers. Round 6 of the Turkey Series took place last Sunday with another great crowd taking part. SPORT INCLUSION DISABILITY CHARTER: Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport Shane Ross launched Ireland’s first Sport Inclusion Disability Charter this week. The charter which was developed by Cara (Sport-Inclusion-Ireland) in conjunction with Sport Ireland outlines 5 key areas people with disabilities are asking organisations to consider in making active and healthy lifestyles possible for them. All clubs are encouraged to see if they can work on these key areas. As a member of Killarney Celtic I can attest to the positives of having a Football for All, or the appropriate for your code, in your club. ON THE GREENS CASTLEISLAND GC: The winner of the Seniors competition was Pat Ruane followed by John O’Connell and Mike O’Connor in third. The Mixed Scramble was won by William O’Sullivan, Marie Gleeson, Elaine Richardson and Patsy Sweeney. Second was the team of William Galvin, Mary O’Sullivan and Annette Galvin. The Garvey’s Supervalu Christmas Hamper was won by Stephen Crookes from Liam Martin and Dan Nelligan. This week’s competition is a 12 hole singles. The club AGM takes place at 3.30pm and all members are asked to attend. Tralee GC: The Whiskey Singles was won by Padraig Moynihan from Kieran T Dinan and Robert Dinan. Fourth was Mike Galvin. The Men’s AGM of the Tralee Golf Club takes place in the Grand Hotel on Monday December 3rd. In the Ladies section the Christmas Hamper Round 3 went to Gorretti O’Connor with Claire Benner in second and Emma Morrissey third.
