LEGAL MATTERS CORNER MIRIAM MC GILLICUDDY ANSWERS YOUR LEGAL QUERIES Top Ten Tips for Online Shopping at Christmas: Alan is thinking of doing all his Christmas shopping online due to COVID. What should he look out for. 1. The EU Consumer protections only operate for items bought within the EU 2. A Good website will give you the main characteristics of what you are buying, the contract duration (if applicable) and the total cost and any additional charges that you have to pay. This is not optional it is the law. 3. You have a statutory right to cancel (sometimes called a cooling-off period- within 14 days) and need not have a defect in the goods or reason to do so. Make sure to put the cancellation in writing. Certain contracts are excluded from this e.g. perishables. 4. There are set timeframes for delivery if none are agreed maximum 30 days and timeframes for refunds ( max 14 days) from a business when you exercise your right to cancel.

5. Don’t forget Chargeback might work by the bank reversing the transaction and putting the funds back into your account. This could be an option in cases of goods not arriving at all or where the business has stopped trading. 6. The only vouchers covered with EU regulation protection are any electronic voucher that is limited to a single retailer or shopping centre and Paper vouchers. 7. The 14 day cooling off period applies to click and collect transactions. 8. There is no obligation on a business to refund your return postal costs if you are cancelling the contract. Free postage on returns is therefore a welcome bonus. 9. Only use secure website and protect your password. Don’t use the same one for all the sites and not the dog’s name. What is he went online shopping! 10. 1Geoblocking- i.e. not allowing you to purchase from another EU member state site is now outlawed.

Bord Bia awards Lee Strand with Gold Membership in their Origin Green Sustainability Programme Lee Strand was recognised for their exceptional performance and commitment to sustainability with Gold Membership at the virtual Origin Green 2020 awards on Thursday, November 19th, 2020. The online event was addressed by Charlie McConalogue, TD, Minister for Agriculture, Food & Marine and recognised twenty-six companies in the food and beverage sector in Ireland who have achieved the highest level of membership in the Origin Green Sustainability Programme. Gearoid Linnane, CEO commented “We are delighted in Lee Strand to be recognised with the prestigious Origin Green Gold Membership for our commitment to sustainability. In Lee Strand environmental management and sustainability are key elements of our business model, from launching 100% renewable cartons, to reducing water usage and energy efficiency. This is a great achievement by our sustainability team who are continually striving for

higher levels of environmental excellence. We would also like to thank Veronica Kennelly from the Institute of Technology Tralee who assisted Lee Strand in the development of our Origin Green plan.” Origin Green continues to evolve to ensure Bord Bia is helping Irish food and drink companies to remain up to date with the evolving needs of trade customers and their consumers, globally. With the introduction of the Origin Green credits system in early 2020, it is now easier to identify members who are performing at a high level or excelling in their sustainability performance. To retain ongoing membership of Origin Green, companies must subsequently submit an annual review to demonstrate clear progress against the established targets and initiatives set. This annual review is subject to an independent third-party review by their verification authority Mabbett. This ensures minimum programme requirements are consistently

Origin Green Gold Membership is awarded to companies who demonstrate an exceptional annual performance on their sustainability targets and is based on the assessment of an independent verification authority. Companies receive credits for their performance

in areas such as raw material sourcing; water and energy efficiency; waste reduction; packaging; and social sustainability. Origin Green has established five different membership tiers based on company size and turnover, so that a real diversity of industry is reflected in the overall Gold membership.

Cara Credit Union lending their support to the Tralee Branch of the Irish Red Cross The Tralee Branch of The Irish Red Cross celebrated 80 years in Tralee last year. Over these years’ the volunteers have served our communities in Kerry with amazing service. In 2017, largely due to voluntary contributions and fundraising efforts, they purchased a branch building. The next step in their vision was to purchase a 4th ambulance, securing their service in our community. Similar to many charities, fundraising efforts have been hampered due to Covid-19. However, when the local Branch of the Irish Red Cross contacted Cara Credit Union to support their efforts, they were more than happy to oblige. Speaking to Pa Laide, CEO of Cara Credit Union, “Every day we see ordinary people going to extraordinary lengths to help others. As a local not-for-profit financial cooperative, we feel it is our Friday 27th November 2020

responsibility to lend support to organisations such as the Tralee Branch of the Irish Red Cross. However, to enable us to support such causes, we need support from our members. To this end, we ask members to consider Cara Credit Union if they need a loan. Lending is our main source of income. Therefore, the more we earn the more we can give back to our members and our local community.” On receiving the donation, Maureen Milward, Secretary of the Tralee Branch of the Irish Red Cross said “ We are very grateful to Cara Credit Union for this donation. We are an entirely voluntary organisation relying solely on voluntary contributions and fees received for ambulance and first aid services. Due to Covid-19 our fundraising efforts have been negatively affected. This is why contributions like that of Cara Credit Union are

THREE BEREAVEMENTS THIS WEEK ALL HAD O’RAHILLYS STRAND ROAD CONNECTIONS “OUR TRIBUTE TO MARIE NIX” (KERINS O RAHILLYS )

Everyone who had the privilege of knowing our dear, sweet Marie is heartbroken on hearing that she passed away last Friday. Marie , a gentle, softly spoken lady was one of a kind. We all have wonderful memories of Marie over the years with the Kerins O Rahillys juveniles and in particular the U8/10 girls. As a passionate “Blue” Marie played a huge role in getting so many girls playing in Strand Road to levels we have never seen before. They were all “my girls “ and she treated them like her own. Marie brought all her nursing traits and dedication onto the pitch and sideline during training and games. That’s the way our beautiful Marie was, always willing to help if she was called upon. Marie has two Co. Championship medals with Stacks but John converted her from the black and amber over to the Blues . Marie was only one of a handful that became a full on “Blue” and became fully immersed in the club. It’s many the bus trip we had away to blitzes in Kerry and outside the county. Always a great bonding session. These are the days that the girls will remember for the rest of their lives. It’s many a time after a game that Marie would open up the boot of her car and out would come the 7Up and goodies. We remember too celebrating birthdays and Marie would bring a cake and candles. In April 2019, our U10 Girls were invited to a blitz in Croke Park. Marie met us there and enjoyed watching the girls. Despite Marie’s illness she always came to watch Stephen and Katie’s games, a proud Mom! An avid supporter, Marie came to most club games even when her own children weren’t playing. It is because of Marie’s influence that our U14 and U15 Ladies are the wonderful players and team that they are today. She was a trainer who truly brought out the best in each one, inspired confidence and so many have gone on to play at a higher level. Karon McLysaght, Adrian Doody, Paddy Hayes, Rory Kerins , Danny Leane and Shirley Doody all worked with Marie and were inspired by her . Marie had a smile that would always light up a room and was just a wonderful, wonderful person. We could write forever about Marie, her wonderful ways, her kindness, her positive attitude always, her great nature and the fun we had but we wouldn’t have enough space in the notes. Our deepest condolences to John, Stephen, Katie and to the Slattery and Nix families. We love you Marie and will cherish the great memories of the time we all had together. We are so lucky to have known you. You will be truly missed .

Louise Quill... Not your typical Irish Mama’ How does a self- described ‘naïve 22-year-old’ come to be called ‘Mama’ by the abandoned children of Tanzania? The award- winning and uplifting documentary ‘Kilimanjaro Mama’ invites audiences into the inspiring world of Kerry woman Louise Quill and documents her unrelenting passion and determination to give the children of Tanzania the best possible chance in life. Mahatma Gandhi once said, ‘be the change you want to see in the world’. This 60 minute feature length documentary brings these words to life and illustrates that one person really can make a difference. The film has received critical acclaim at numerous International Film Festivals in Ireland, USA and Canada Friday 27th November 2020

and has picked up the award for best feature film at last year’s Kerry International Film Festival and was launched on You Tube, November 20th .Louise Quill shares her heart breaking, human and inspirational story of why she set up the Tír na nÓg Orphanage and school in Tanzania in 2006, what drives her, the impact it has had on her own health and well- being and the sacrifices she has made in her own life to ensure that these children can realise their own hopes and dreams. Tír na nÓg and its children are not just a charitable endeavour for Louise Quill. It is home and the children are family. Louise is affectionately known as ‘Big Mama’ and according to the children ‘it is not because she is fat, but because she has a big heart’. Louise’s mother, Carmel, features heavily in the documentary. She expresses

both concern and hints of disappointment at the life her daughter has chosen. She speaks about wishing Louise would have her own children and remain in Ireland full- time. When explaining her reasons for taking on such a task, it is simple to Louise ‘nobody has ever given these children 100% of anything, I want to

AND NOW FOR THE GOOD NEWS... from The Tralee Advertiser Team and Tralee Chamber Alliance God rest ye merry gentlemen, but not until your window’s done!

If every we needed the Spirit of Christmas radiating from our town’s shop windows, it’s now! With months of frustrating lockdowns, we think it’s time to banish Bah Humbug and embrace everything that’s good about Christmas. After all, who doesn’t enjoy basking in the golden glow of a festive window display, full of seasonal cheer, evoking memories of Christmas past or conjuring wishes for Christmas present? This year, we say yes to bumper demonstrations, obscene amounts of tinsel, over-the-top festiveness. Don’t be afraid to lash it on because there’s always room for one more sprig of holly. Whether you believe less is more or too much is never enough, get creative. And not just in the window. You can use the space inside your shop to tell your story too. We’d love to see lights, baubles, pine cones, Santa hats, paper chains, mistletoe ― whatever says Christmas to you. And to show our appreciation, we are offering 2 amazing prizes for the best window display: The Judges Choice Award which includes an Advertising Package worth €6000 and The People’s Choice Award, which includes an Advertising Package worth €4000. It’s probably fair to say that in general, we tend to take our town centre for granted; it’s always been there, we assume it always will be. But then a pandemic comes along and changes the way we think about everything. We start to understand how connected we are and how the choices we make really impact our local economies. Only then do we get a clear picture of the importance of shopping locally. Now, thanks to a new online platform by the Tralee Chamber Alliance, shopping locally couldn’t be easier, despite lockdown. Just go to www.tralee.ie/mytralee to browse and buy from a myriad of Tralee businesses. The portal is simple to use, with a fresh, bright layout. Categories have been divided into seven sections with everything from breaks away to dining out, shopping to services. So whether you want to spruce up your home, splash out on some new plants or order your winter wardrobe, you can do it all online at Tralee.ie but more importantly, you’ll be helping to secure Irish jobs by keeping it local. 20 KEEP YOUR BUSINESS IN TRALEE AND KEEP TRALEE IN BUSINESS!

Tired of being Tired...? Whether you are male or female, young or old, everyone seems to be looking for more energy right now. The stresses and strains of the past few months has had an impact on all of our lives, both physically and mentally. However, if you are suffering from serious fatigue you should pay your GP a visit to rule out any medical issue which may be causing your symptoms. Some people may struggle with complete exhaustion where they feel every muscle in their body is aching, but for most people it may not be this severe but they still struggle to cope and function on a daily basis. Concentration, tolerance and coping levels may also be affected; and even the smallest things seem to aggravate you! A healthy balanced diet is essential. Never skip breakfast (or any meal), as your body has been fasting over night and needs a jolt to get the day started. This also kick starts your metabolism. Avoid foods high in sugar as they will give you a sudden “burst of energy” but will also result in a rapid drop in energy leaving you feeling exhausted. Some other key things to remember are: • • • •

Sleep: May sound obvious. Aim for seven to eight hours a night and ensure you are relaxed before going to bed. If possible a nap for 20-30minutes during the day may also help. Exercise: It really does help. A brisk walk will leave you feeling more energised, not less. Drink water throughout the day: Even slight dehydration can leave you feeling tired and life-less Watch your stress levels: Stress and anxiety can leave you feeling physically and mentally exhausted regardless of how much sleep you get.

While these lifestyle changes are guaranteed to make a difference to your energy levels in the long term, there are also some excellent supplements which will help you! Some of these include: • • • • •

Co-enzyme Q10: Your cells use it to produce energy REVIVE ACTIVE: one sachet a day to help support energy levels, immunity and heart health. Passiflora: Tincture which may help alleviate symptoms of stress and anxiety Melissa: Combination of relaxing herbs together with magnesium to relax and L-Theanine – just 2 tables 1 hour before bed to aid a restful night’s sleep. B Vitamin: A good quality B Complex (which contains all of your essential B Vitamins) is a must. It helps raise your tolerance levels and coping capabilities; also helps energy levels. Talk 1 every morning after breakfast. Omega 3: Your body needs the “Good Fats” to function. If your diet is deficient then supplement with a good fish oil, such as Eskimo, MorEPA or Krill, choose from liquid or capsules

If you are currently on medication some of these remedies may not be suitable, however, our consultants are happy to discuss this with you.

Until next time, Stay healthy.

Deirdre

Shop online safely

When shopping online, it's important to take steps to protect yourself. Online shopping has only increased in popularity, because of Covid . While the increased availability of online shopping is convenient, it also makes it more lucrative for scammers to trick customers into paying for items for financial gain There are some simple rules to follow. 1 - Read the description... sometimes what you think you ordered is not what you get. 2 - Use Only your credit card or PayPal. Never use a debit card 3 - Look for a lock icon in the browser bar of a site to verify that they use SSL (secure sockets layer) encryption. The URL also should start with “https” rather than just “http.”Secure websites are configured to mask the data you share, such as passwords or financial info. Shopping only on secure sites reduces the risk that your private information will be compromised while you shop. 4 - Make sure you check the reviews of who you're buying from by doing a simple google search. 5 - Buy local if at all possible. It’s always great to support your own.

Avoid Scammers

During the covid there has been a lot of scams so here is some advice on how to avoid them! Scammers often pretend to be contacting you on behalf of the revenue. They might use a real name, like Eir, or Vodafone , or make up a name that sounds official. Some pretend to be from a business you know, like , a Microsoft or even a charity asking for donations. They use technology to change the phone number that appears on your caller ID. So, the name and number you see might not be real. Scammers want you to act before you have time to think. If you’re on the phone, they might tell you not to hang up so you can’t check out their story. Resist the pressure to act immediately. Legitimate businesses will give you time to make a decision. Anyone who pressures you to pay or give them your personal information is a scammer. Never give out personal information.

A CHRISTMAS STORY FOR 2020

24

The Christmas Tree Top It was a month before Christmas and all through the town people hurried and hushed no gathering around. The sense of excitement alongside indifference. Our every year preparations had changed, and for the kids and adults alike the HOHOHO and Christmas cheer was in some ways distant. In a household close by a boy named Chris overheard the many different conversations that were being had downstairs at his parents Christmas table. Mom was on the phone, Dad on some computer call, Auntie Grace put pen to paper to send love to those out of reach. Grace had the magic to touch others and this Chris had also. He was taking it all in listening from his bedroom door yet could not quite understand why things had been different this year. He ran quickly down the stairs and shouted STOP STOP, as he looked around him. “Dad why is Nanny and Uncle Bernard not travelling to us this year, I heard you and Mom say you will miss them and how sad it was going to be to tell me, Daddy?” “Listen son” his Dad spoke softly. “The whole world has changed just for this Christmas, it’s a little different this year son because the whole world needed a long deserved break, it is going to be holiday time for everyone everywhere to stay just as they are. This year Chris my boy, we will all see the true meaning of Christmas that gifts cannot replace. We will put our angel on the Christmas tree top and together we will understand just for this year that our angel and Christmas will still bring joy and carol singing cheer”. Chris hugged his Dad and asked, “what can I do?” “ Be merry my boy Santa is still on his way. But for now, we must check our neighbours and ring round to keep connected this very very special time. Action Chris is what’s needed”. Chris ran to his room and pulled out his markers and pens grabbed sheets of paper, he sat and began. “Colette meet me at the laneway next to Martha’s at 8.pm do not be late, our time is precious”. Chris called on his best mate and kindred spirit Colette. Together yet apart they would bring community and Christmas to light. Upon meeting at Martha’s, they drew up the advent calendar to be released. They established between them messages of hope to the public and advertised who needed what and when. They included personal requests and added some

short story to keep creativity alive. In the random acts of good will and sharing, Chris and Colette went to every letter box they could with pages that had met pen and publication. Between them they brought the town back together with messages of hope and a Christmas wish to each person’s list. When the deliveries were done, they met near town, waved at each other with huge smiles no frowns. They stood slightly apart yet both with warm hearts. The words went to print, and connection was made. The people and neighbours stood all around as the lights in Tralee were on count down. The ladder stretched high to the Christmas treetop, the work man placed the angel exactly where she belonged, he looked down at the public from a distance and said, “LOOK UP LOOK UP HAPPY CHRISTMAS MY FRIENDS”. Both Chris and Colette skipped home that night singing jingle bells jingle bells with all of their might.

God bless to all - Happy Christmas Friday 27th November 2020

IT’S ONLY A JOKE 26

IT'S ONLY A JOKE

TWO FACTORY WORKERS ARE TALKING

The woman says, "I can make the boss give me the day off." The man replies, "And how would you do that?" The woman says, "Just wait and see." She then hangs upside-down from the ceiling. The boss comes in and says, "What are you doing?" The woman replies, "I'm a light bulb." The boss then says, "You've been working so much that you've gone crazy. I think you need to take the day off." The man starts to follow her and the boss says, "Where are you going?" The man says, "I'm going home, too. I can't work in the dark."

MY BOSS IS THREATENING TO FIRE THE EMPLOYEE WHO HAS THE WORST POSTURE. I have a hunch it might be me.

HOW DO YOU GET TRUMP TO CHANGE A LIGHT BULB? Tell him Obama put it in.

PIT BULL AT THE FUNERAL

A guy is walking down the street and sees a massive funeral procession. At the front of the line is a man with a pit bull, then 2 coffins, followed by 200 people. Curious, he asks the man what happened. "Well," says the man, "My pitbull killed my wife last Thursday, then on Friday, he killed my mother-inlaw." The first man thinks about it for a second, and says, "Would you mind if I borrowed your dog for a couple of days?" The man shrugs, points behind him and says "Get in line."

A MAN WALKS INTO A BAR AND SITS DOWN AND ORDERS A DRINK. Bartender says "I'm sorry sir, you already seem very drunk, I cannot serve you." Guy gets up and leaves. A few minutes later, he comes in again, sits down at the bar and tries ordering another drink. "I'm sorry sir, but I cannot serve you because you already seem drunk. Please leave," Guy gets up, grunts and wanders off again through the same exit. Another few minutes goes by and the same guy comes back in, sits down and tries to order yet another drink. "SIR, I'VE ALREADY TOLD YOU NOW TWICE THAT YOU'RE TOO DRUNK AND I CANNOT SERVE YOU." Dude looks at the bartender all surprised and slurs: "How many bars do you work at?!"

DID YOU KNOW THAT A GIRAFFES NECK IS STRONG ENOUGH TO SUPPORT THE WEIGHT OF A HUMAN CLIMBING ON IT? Anyway, I got banned from my local zoo today

BILL AND HIS FRIENDS WERE OUT FOR THEIR WEEKLY GOLF MATCH. A funeral procession goes by and Bill stops I the middle of his swing, takes off his hat, and bows his head until they have moved on. "That was pretty moving how you showed respect there Bill", one his buddies says. "Well. We were married for 25 years!" replied Bill.

T I N G ONLINE... CARS ! business Get your noticed in Tralee’s favourite Friday read 28 O R Q U SHOP LOCALLY!!! ELECTRIC CARS AND HYBRID PRICES TO FALL WITHIN 5 YEARS

Electric cars and plug-in hybrids will be “substantially” less expensive within five to six years, a world expert has predicted. The dramatic fall-off in price will come as the individual cost of making a car will reduce as companies increase the volume of manufacturing to meet spiralling demand for electric vehicles (EVs).The forecast was made by Dr Otmar Scharrer, director R&D and E-mobility at global technology giant ZF. His company supplies systems for passenger cars, commercial vehicles and industrial technology as part of the next generation of electric mobility. He is very much ‘in the trenches’ with automakers, researchers and engineers and is an expert on the technology, developments and marketplace of future mobility.Dr Scharrer was speaking from Germany via Zoom to members of the World Car of the Year jury on the implications for us all in the push towards more sustainable transport. In response to a question by the Irish Independent, he forecast that prices of EVs and PHEVs (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles) would decline quite substantially in the “early second-half of the decade”. That will come as music to the ears of consumers who currently baulk at the high, albeit subsidised, prices for an electric car compared with conventional models. How much of the predicted lower cost buyers might enjoy remains to be seen as the government is bound to feel it is entitled to further scale back incentives in a burgeoning market. We currently subsidise EV purchase (VRT rebate, SEAI grant) to the tune of up to €10,000 and PHEVs to €7,500.Numbers of new EVs and PHEVs will mushroom here over the next few years to meet 2030 emissions and climate action targets. So the benefits of the predicted price reduction could be watered down by a fall-off in incentives.(Motoring Independent)

TOYOTA HAS A NEW HILUX!

TOYOTA’S latest Hilux pick-up has just gone on sale with prices starting from €24,258, excluding VAT. The new arrival gets a new 2.8-litre powertrain and, they claim, it has improved performance on, and off, the road. The 2,755cc diesel develops 204hp and 500Nm of torque (auto); 420Nm manual). The pickup’s one-tonne payload and 3.5 tonne towing capability now extend to all 4-wheeldrive body types - single and double cab. They have also improved the suspension and power steering. It still has leaf spring suspension but the twin-shock absorber at the rear has been revised. A new electronic function mirrors the effect of a mechanical limited-slip differential for improved traction on low-grip surfaces in 2-wheel drive mode. The front has been completely redesigned with a new three-dimensional grille taking centre stage. The cabin gets a new 8in tablet-style touchscreen (from SR5 grade). The enhanced multimedia system incorporates Apple CarPlay/Android Auto for smartphone integration. Spec includes smart entry, sat nav, auto air-con and parking sensors. BEST SIGNAL-BLOCKING FARADAY BAGS FOR CAR KEYS IN 2020

If you buy a new car that comes with a smart car key, you’ll be able to enter and possibly even start your car without taking the key out of your pocket. Although this makes life easier, the technology has also created a new way for criminals to steal cars, so you may want to consider buying a Faraday bag to protect against this.A smart key uses a unique frequency to communicate with the car, and tech-savvy thieves can use a relay attack device to replicate that frequency. Once copied, the thieves simply place the relay device near your car to emulate the presence of the key, open the door and drive off, with no smashed glass, car alarms or complex ignition systems to worry about. How to avoid keyless entry car theft A Faraday bag eliminates this concern. Lined with a layer of metal, it essentially isolates your key and its frequency so that it isn’t transmitted or copied. A Faraday bag also works with smartphones and credit cards. There are a number of Faraday bags on the market and we’ve tested eight of them to find out which is the best one to buy. How the Faraday bags were tested In the first test we tried to open the car door with the car’s key in the Faraday bag next to the drivers door handle. Next we pressed buttons on the key fob within the bag. Finally, with the key still bagged up in the cabin, we pressed the engine start button. We also assessed the build quality, cost and usability of the bags. An app was used to check the phone, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi signal-blocking capabilities. Verdict The results were very close because all the products worked as the manufacturers stated. With this in mind, we turned to the quality, practicality and value for money offered by each of the products.. The best signal blocker was the Defender, a Faraday bag that’s big enough to accommodate other items too. Both the Disklabs KS1 and the Ecence weren’t far behind. 1. Defender Signal Blocker 2. Disklabs Key Shield Faraday Bag KS1 3. Ecence RFID Radiation Protection Bag Friday 27th November 2020

ADVERTISER SPORT!

32 PREMIUM ADVERTISING

SPORT AND HISTORY NOW AND THEN: As we move closer to Christmas 2020, and we will have a Christmas to remember even if it will be different that normal but that’s for a different article, the saying that “It’s the Most Wonderful Night of the Year” will be heard more and more. Well last weekend can be described as the Most Wonderful Sporting Weekend of the Year!! Firstly we must congratulate the GAA on the commemoration ceremony in Croke Park on Sunday night and the documentaries on the run up to the weekend. They certainly honoured the memory of those killed in Croke Park 100 years ago on Bloody Sunday. That day in 1920 was one of the saddest in the history of our country that has seen more than its share of sad days. It can’t be forgotten that the day started with a number of men, allegedly spies, were shot in their beds. Without going into the politics of the time and certainly not wanting to upset anyone this part of the day cannot be disregarded. And while that was wrong so was going into a football ground where a game was taking place and opening fire. It was a blatant disregard for lives and the ages of those killed shows this. Days like this are part of our history and commemorations like we say last Sunday are very important. Our young people need to be educated in order that they can understand all sides of the past. BACK ON THE FIELD: The right place to start is with the Kerry hurlers and the huge boost they have given to the county with their qualification for the Joe McDonagh Cup Final. They certainly earned their trip to Croke Park which was secured with a 2-22 to 1-23 win over Carlow. Fintan O’Connor’s side have been playing some very good hurling and were in the position that all teams want to be as they try to qualify – knowing a win would put them into the decider. Now they can focus on playing at the GAA headquarters which they were supposed to do in the League final before COVID scuppered that plan. They will meet Antrim, whom they have built up a rivalry with over recent seasons, on December 13th and what a fitting end it will be to the strangest of years if the Kerry hurlers can win an All Ireland in Croke Park in December long after the Kerry footballers have been knocked out. They certainly have the players and management to do this and the whole county are behind them. From a local media point of view I know all editors had their fingers crossed coming into the closing minutes of the game as the run into an All Ireland final will fill many of the pages over the next three weeks. A FULL SQUAD MUST BE ALLOWED TO TRAVEL: One issue that has been raised is that counties can only bring 26 players to games. While this was obviously done keep numbers attending grounds down it really must be looked at for the Friday 27th November 2020

remaining games. I would presume that the Kerry hurlers have a panel of 30 or maybe 32 and there is no way 4 to 6 of these players should be stopped going to the final. It certainly is not right to ask any manager to tell any player who has trained all year to stay at home. Croke Park can hold 80,000 plus so allowing the four teams on All Ireland hurling final day to bring another 5 persons is not going to make any difference. HISTORY REPEATS ITSELF: If anyone ever wondered if it was worth it to give your money to Mystic Mick or Maggie or any other fortune teller then the four semi-finalists in this year’s GAA Championship will prove that no one can tell the future! I have no idea what odds you would have gotten by predicting Tipperary, Mayo, Cavan and Dublin reaching the last four. But then if you believe that lightening can strike twice and being the year that it is – not just being the Covid year but the 100th anniversary of Bloody Sunday – then this was the year for it to happen. And in 1920 Tipperary won the All Ireland. Should that happen again 30 other counties will be celebrating with them!! From a Kerry and Cork point of view it will be a long winter of reflection on opportunities missed. But as least for Kerry GAA fans, and indeed for Kerry people, everywhere we can all support the hurlers but sadly for Cork GAA fans they don’t even have that to keep their spirits up for the next three weeks!! CLUB NOTES: Before going into the notes of individual clubs all of them have congratulated the Kerry hurlers on their achievement and all wish them every success in the final next month. AUSTIN STACKS NEWS: Starting with the Juvenile section of the club and the mentors of all the underage teams from the under 6’s to the u16’s are asking all their players to keep up their fitness and skill levels by doing different sessions at home. Club Lotto: There was no winner of the Lotto from the numbers drawn 5,6,7 and 32 and the next jackpot was e13,400. The clubs tickets are still on sale at the usual outlets on Rock Street, Oakpark and Monavalley and all support will be greatly appreciated. The Annual Mass was help o-line this year to comply with the Covid restrictions and the clubs thanks Fr Padraig Walsh for celebrating this very important Mass. In the Senior section of the club and a special ceremony was held at the clubhouse to mark the 100th anniversary of Bloody Sunday in Croke Park. The attendance was limited due to Covid. The club shop is now open on-line with all the official merchandise on sale ahead of Christmas. The club congratulates Rory Kirby who has won a prestigious Radio Drama Award for his play ‘The Gypsy Girl’. This

of course is not the first time that Rory has won such an award, as he has also won Club related awards in the past with his GAA McNamee Award in 2014 – Rockumentary – which followed our SF Co. Championship win that year and also his win in 2018 with the Stacks100. ie. Well done again Rory.

PARNELLS NEWS: With activity off the field on hold the club is looking back at how far things have moved on since it was formed eight years ago. At that time a group of enthusiasts got together to re-form the club after a break of almost ninety years. The club has gone from strength to strength becoming a senior club in both hurling and camogie in 2019 and last year the seniors reached the Intermediate championship final. Membership continues to grow but new members are always welcome. BALLYMAC NEWS: Like all the clubs Ballymacelligott are delighted for the Kerry hurlers and from their point of view they are especially delighted for senior player Tomas O’Connor who is with the hurlers. The club paid its tribute to those who lost their lives in Croke Park 100 years ago and joined many other clubs in flying their flags at half-mast and lit up the grounds from 19.20 to 20.20pm last Sunday. The Ballymac Club will hold its AGM on Sunday January 3rd at 2pm with the venue to be confirmed. However if it is not possibly to hold it on that day it will be held online the following Sunday, January 10th at 2pm. There are a number of changes brought in by Croke Park on the running of AGM’s and these will be communicated to clubs in the coming weeks. There was no winner of the e1000 jackpot in the Play Ball Lotto with the numbers drawn 19, 16, 18, 11 and the next jackpot was e1020. ST PAT’S NEWS: There was no winner from the Lotto from the numbers drawn on Sunday night 8,10, 26 and 29. The next jackpot will be e3300 with the draw taking place in the clubhouse this Sunday night at 9pm and tickets are available from all the usual outlets. The club is very grateful to all those who support the Lotto as it is even more vital than even now with most sources of income not available at the moment. The AGM will take place on Thursday night December 10th and will be a virtual AGM. Information on how this will be conducted will be sent to all members before the AGM. The club is always looking for new people to get involved and if you want to join the committee please contact any of the present members. KERINS O’RAHILLYS NEWS: Like all clubs at various times they are saddened by the passing of a member who had given their life to the club. This week on its social media and in its notes the club pays a well- deserved tribute to the late Marie Nix who was a stalwart

Call Chris or Colette Tel: 066-7126399 or e-mail : traleeadvertiser@gmail.com

of the girls and ladies section of the club for many decades. There was no winner of the Lotto from the numbers drawn 10,13,18 and 22 and the next jackpot will be e5800. ACTION BACK: All club players will be delighted to hear that at this week’s Kerry GAA County Board meeting it was said that all county championships will be completed over the last two weekends of January and the first weekend of February. The Divisional championships will be played off in early January. INDOOR SPORTS DISAPPOINTED WITH SPORT IRELAND CHIEF’S COMMENTS: While there is good news for footballers and other outdoor sports those involved in indoors sports were angered this week when John Treacy said that he did not expect these to return “until a vaccine was in circulation”. While he did row back saying these were personal comments and not those of Sport Ireland it angered those involved in these sports. Like all sports those involved in basketball, volleyball, squash, snooker etc did everything that was asked of them in earlier lockdowns and are ready to do so again be it at local or national level like basketballs Super and Division 1 Leagues. Off the cuff and ‘one solution suits all’ comments like that made by John Treacy are very unhelpful and can have unintended consequences to the mental health of those who have these as their sports of choice. Hopefully the return of all sports, both indoor and outdoor, will be clarified on Friday when the Taoiseach addresses the nation. OTHER SPORTS IN BRIEF: With lots of connections to Tralee and many relatives still living in the town motor racer Lorcan Hanafin has enjoyed a very successful debut season in the Porsche Carrera Cup GB taking third in the rookie category. Members of the Tralee Rowing club are now a common sight on the canal every morning with training starting at 7.30am. The sessions are fully Covid compliant. Well done to Ger McDonnell who recently completed at 17km open water swim in 5 hours and 54 minutes and he raised money for the Tralee Men’s Shed and the local RNLI. FINALLY THE TOWN LIGHTS UP: While it’s not sporting related this column wants to join with all the others who are involved in the wonderful Christmas Lights that have certainly brightened up the town and the spirits of all those who are enjoying them.
