LEGAL MATTERS CORNER MIRIAM MC GILLICUDDY ANSWERS YOUR LEGAL QUERIES Consumer issues Molly aged 80 years cannot walk around town and wants to buy her Christmas presents online. She is wondering what are her rights with online purchases. Buying online or by phone are non face to face transactions so there is a greater onus on businesses to give you clear information before you buy e.g. the main characteristics of what you are buying, the time line for the contract duration, the total cost and any additional charges that you have to pay. All the contact information for the business should be on the website. You also have a right to cancel with these non face to face transactions. In effect there is a cooling off period. You have 14 days to change your mind. In the case of buying goods, the 14 days begins on the day you receive them. In the case of a service, it begins on the day you conclude the contract. If the business doesn’t tell you about your right to cancel the cooling-off period can be extended to a maximum of 12 months. It is important that you notify of cancellation within the 14 days and then you have a further 14 days to return the goods in good condition. There are a number of exclusions from this cooling off period as follows: Perishable goods Personalise or custom-made Goods, Newspapers or magazines, Gaming or lottery services, Items that have been unsealed or which cannot be returned for hygiene reasons, Tickets for events with a specific date or time, Reservations for hotels or holiday homes for a specific date or period of time, Car rental. There should also be timeframes for delivery and if none are agreed then it is within 30 days. If the delivery is later than this time frame you can agree a different date that suits or you can cancel the contract and get a refund. There should be timeframes for refunds from a business when you exercise your right to cancel. Your rights apply where you buy from a business based in Ireland or the EU. If a business is misleading false or deceptive in its advertising you can complain to the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission www.ccpc.ie or the Advertising Standards Authority of Ireland www.asai.ie As a consumer buying goods you have consumer rights that the goods are fit for purpose, of merchantable quality, as described and that the bulk corresponds to the sample. Retired Kerry Grandad Scoops €41,000 on Winning Streak A retired grandfather from Co. Kerry won prizes totalling an impressive €41,000 on the National Lottery TV game show Winning Streak last Saturday (30th November) on RTÉ One. John Reidy from Dromulton, close to Killarney, Co. Kerry was delighted with his winnings as he scooped €38,000 in cash and won a holiday to Madeira, Portugal worth €3,000.
A true Kerryman, born and bred, John was supported in the studio audience last Saturday by his wife, Síle (the couple have been married for 45 years) and their four adult children. He said he was watching Winning Streak with Síle the Saturday evening
before when he was shocked at seeing his own scratch card pulled out of the drum by Marty and Sinead. He has been retired for almost a decade now from where he was a farmer for his working life. Now with a bit more time on his hands he enjoys spending time with Síle and his family.
John has a big love for GAA and loves watching Gaelic Football, whether it’s the local side Scartaglin (with whom he was involved in the running of for many years) or whether he is cheering on the boys in the gold and green of Kerry. With his winnings from the show John will get the house decorated and will be sure to treat his family over Christmas
Kerry’s Newest Pickleball Coaches at John Mitchels
Kerry Recreation and Sports Partnership, in recognition of the success of Age and Opportunity’s ‘Go For Life Games’ programme, hosted a specific ‘Coach the Coaches’ pickleball coaching day on 2 December at John Mitchel’s GAA Club in Tralee. Pickleball is an exercise that ticks all the boxes and makes for a great social outlet for older people. Combining elements of badminton, tennis and table tennis along with using modified tennis rules, pickleball offers the older person an opportunity to participate in sport played on a court like a badminton court with a paddle as opposed to a racket. According to Jimmy Deenihan, Chairperson of
Kerry Recreation and Sport Partnership “Exercise is good at any age but is especially important as we get older and pickleball offers another opportunity for older people to stay active as well as having fun while learning a new skill”. The aim of the coaching day was to train up as many people as possible in order to be able to introduce pickleball to Kerry. According to KRSP Programme Facilitator Debbie Quirke “The day was very successful with 25 participants attending and representative of 11 groups. As 2020 approaches, we at Kerry Recreation and Sports Partnership plans to provide an opportunity for the older people of Kerry to experience pickleball in a variety of
Pic of group at John Mitchels Clubhouse on Monday. locations, via our public leisure centres and supporting our counties active retirement groups.”

Mags wins Outstanding Achievement in 2019 Climate Ambassador Awards with An Taisce Centre Manager of the Aqua Dome Mags O’Sullivan was delighted to be presented with an Outstanding Achievement Award 2019 and a Certificate of Recognition at An Taisce Climate Ambassador Awards 2019 in Dublin this week. Mags participated in the An Taisce Climate Ambassador programme throughout 2019 and together with management and staff in the Aqua Dome worked tirelessly to make positive environmental changes to help reduce the Aqua Domes carbon footprint and mitigate the adverse effects of climate change. Mags said that ‘businesses have an important role to play in climate change and it’s a role that the team at Tralee’s Aqua Dome takes very seriously’. Following on from the National Dialogue on Climate Action in The Rose Hotel last year Mags signed up to be a Climate
Ambassador. “The Climate Ambassador Programme” is sponsored by the department of ‘Communications, Climate Action and Environment’ and is a vital programme to help raise awareness about climate change and how individuals, communities and business can help. Minister Richard Bruton attended the awards and commended the enthusiasm, dedication and commitment of all the Climate Ambassadors who worked tirelessly throughout the year to engage their local communities to take action on climate. Over the course of the year, Climate Ambassadors engaged over 200,000 people; carrying out 500 climate-based actions, and 800 climate communications! In January this year, Mags along with her Aqua Dome team set about analysing all areas of operations that had potential to be
greener and together they set about making positive environmental changes. These positive changes have been showcased in their environmental videos and blogs posts and shared across all their social media channels. As one of Kerrys Top Visitor Attractions, the Aqua Dome hopes to encourage and inspire other individuals & businesses to take an active role in becoming greener and do whatever it takes to reduce the national carbon footprint, minimise plastic pollution and reduce water wastage. The Aqua Dome is committed to sharing their environmental progress with the general public and are leading by example by sharing all their positive changes on their environmental blog and social media platforms - https:// aquadome.ie/category/news/ environmental/ . This proactive attitude towards the environment is just one of the ways in which the Aqua Dome is making a difference locally.
Staff at the Aqua Dome also work closely with Tralee Chamber Alliance, Kerry County Council, North Kerry Family Fun, Top Kerry Attractions, other tourism providers, accommodation providers and a variety of other businesses supporting green initiatives, sustainability and positive environmental change wherever possible. Other local groups who work tirelessly to protect the environment and wildlife in Tralee are GLAN Tralee, Team Bramble, Evan Alex and Dylan's Tralee Canal Clean-Up, Tralee Tidy Towns, Transition Kerry, Tralee Bee Highway Kerry CAN, Tralee PPN & Kerry Sustainable Energy Co Op. As a town Tralee is striving to be greener and more sustainable! Every little step made for the environment is one giant leap for the planet! By working together we are making a difference!

Clanmaurice Claim AllIreland Junior Club Title KNOW YOUR RIGHTS: GIFT VOUCHERS Question I usually get a gift voucher at Christmas. What are the new gift voucher rules that came in recently? Answer Gift vouchers are any voucher, coupon or other document (including an electronic document) that can be used instead of money to pay (or pay in part) for goods and services. Since 2 December 2019, the Consumer Protection (Gift Vouchers) Act 2019 sets out the following new rules for gift vouchers: • Gift vouchers must have no expiry date or be valid for at least 5 years. • Traders cannot specify that a gift voucher is spent in one transaction. • Traders cannot charge a fee to change the name on a gift voucher, (if you have to register a name on the voucher). • If the balance remaining on a gift voucher is more than €1 after you buy something with it, a trader must reimburse the balance to you. They can give you cash, make an electronic transfer or give you another gift voucher. These new rules do not apply to: • Vouchers that you can only use to buy specified goods and services at a discounted price, from a specified trader on a specified date, or for a specified period of 3 months or less. For example, vouchers from deal websites such as Groupon or Pigsback. • •Vouchers issued as part of a customer loyalty or promotion scheme. • Vouchers issued as a refund for goods you returned to a trader. • Vouchers and gift cards sold before 2 December 2019. The expiry period and the terms and conditions that applied at the time of purchase apply to these vouchers. The new rules do not apply to electronic money gift cards (for example, One4all gift cards) which are already covered under the European Communities (Electronic Money) Regulations 2011.

ycling legend Seán Kelly took part in this year’s tour which travelled through the six counties of Munster, beginning at Cork City Hall on Thursday, August 8th and finished on Cork’s infamous St Patrick’s Hill on Sunday, August 11th. Participants endured an impressive 600km cycle as they journeyed an average of 150 km per day through the beautiful towns and villages of Cork, Waterford, Tipperary, Limerick, Clare and Kerry. Speaking at the cheque presentation, Paul Sheridan, founder of the Tour de Munster said, “We have enjoyed an incredible 19 years, raising vital funds and awareness for some fantastic charities along the way. This year’s tour was extra special as we celebrated our ten year partnership with Down Syndrome Ireland Munster branches as the main
beneficiary. I never imagined in 2001 that we would be here today, having raised over €3 million. The hard work and dedication from so many people and their communities has been truly amazing and none of this would be possible without their support. We are very grateful to the many
companies and the public who have supported the Tour over the past 19 years, in particular this year’s main sponsors, ublox and UPS.” For more information on Tour de Munster and DSI log onto to www.tourdemunster.com and www.downsyndrome.ie.

Construction Commences On Two New Kerry Greenway Projects the potential to attract tens of thousands of visitors in the coming years and will also provide the people of Kerry with a top-class and highstandard amenity. ‘I would like to acknowledge the support and cooperation of residents and landowners along both routes and I can assure those living along the routes that there will be continued engagement as the projects progress. I also want to acknowledge the work of the staff of Kerry County Council who have worked tirelessly to bring these projects to this stage,’ said Cllr Kelleher. The Tralee-Fenit project will see a continuation of an amenity trail on the outskirts of Tralee which was developed by Kerry County Council in 2016 and which links Casement Railway Station and Mounthawk. The project will see the completion of the remaining rural section of this route from Ballynahoulort to Fenit by constructing a threemetre wide greenway suitable for walking and cycling. The route will predominantly follow the railway corridor and works will be completed in one phase.
The sod has been turned this week on two new greenway amenities in Kerry marking the commencement of construction on the multimillion-euro projects. Minister of State at the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport, Brendan Griffin TD, turned the sod on the new 10km Tralee to Fenit Greenway and the 10.5km greenway between Listowel and the Limerick county bounds. Construction is expected to take between 18 months and two years. Minister Griffin declared it a hugely important day for Kerry and said that the new greenways will greatly enhance the visitor experience and leisure offering in the county. The Cathaoirleach of Kerry County Council, Cllr Niall Kelleher, welcomed the funding provided by the department which he said is supplemented by €1.2m in funding which was agreed by councillors as part of the recent increase in the base rate of the Local Property Tax. ‘Councillors in the respective Municipal Districts approved planning permission for these greenways in September 2018 and we were delighted to have received €6.5m in funding from the Department to allow these strategic projects to proceed. The greenways have

boundary with County Limerick and will take in ten townlands. The greenway will link with the award-winning Childers Park and Woodlands in Listowel town and this linkage has been facilitated by grants recently awarded by Transport Infrastructure Ireland and the Department of Rural and Community Development. The works will be carried out in one phase and will consist of the clearance of the old railway line, the laying of a three-metre wide tarmacadam surface, provision of traffic calming measures, and the reinstatement of drainage and agricultural underpasses where necessary. The key objectives of the new
greenways are: • Develop the local tourist economy by building a safe cycling and walking amenity which allows locals and tourists to cycle and walk safely in a carfree environment • Developing new amenities to link with the surrounding townlands and thereby improve the social fabric of local communities • Provide an amenity that allows for universal access attracting families, the elderly and people with disabilities • Complement a range of existing and future tourism trails throughout Kerry

"Christmas Angels" A Christmas Short Story by Fidelma Fitzgerald
Once upon a time there lived a lady named Angel, her name had a deeper meaning then its title Angel is exactly this an angel living here on earth. Angel lived in a cottage on the edge of the Kerry mountains. Angel dwelled here with her family. Her family were very very special to her and on this Christmas eve morning she held a special ceremony for the life they lived at the edge of Kerry’s beauty. Its crisp loveliness was at times too amazingly magical to take in. Angels life and family deserved nothing less. Her cottage and nearby grounds were overshadowed with the outstretched branches of oak and willow trees, the trees were decorated this morning with white white snow that was as light as angels’ heart. Angel swung open her cottage door this morning singing in a highpitched voice with excitement and cheer as she inhaled the fresh frosty air and exhaled it vocally singing HO HO HO merry Christmas my lovely ones, this Christmas eve morning she walked out to the front garden of the amazing magical cottage and spread bread all over the grass, some of it was especially toasted with a swirl of some marmalade for the red Brest Robbins, they loved a bit of sweetness. Her liveliness drew on the wildlife and 28

she sang aloud happy Christmas everyone, she continued to feed whatever animals she could that morning and to their delight they gathered and ate with an almost nod of the head appreciation. She went back inside and put a match to her open fire that blazed a light of great warmth and brightness all round her living room. She switched on the lights that wrapped around her huge Christmas tree singing as she went along. The smell from the oven took on a Christmas odour
and appetite all of it owns. It contained the baking of pine oat cones, red berry bark, crunchy crisp deep green moss, all topped with a large sprinkle of holly haws. Angel and her family would gather to feast of her great delights and washed down with warm fruit juice with added cinnamon from the freshest of juices. Just before she laid out this wonderful feast of goodness, she one by one wrapped the gifts for her family she loved so dearly. Her 1st gift was a glowing gold bell with a royal red ribbon she wrapped this

in a circle of fresh green grass. Her 2nd gift was a large parsnip wrapped in cabbage leaves. Her 3rd gift with excitement growing was cheese grained bread wrapped on a floating of square foam. Her 4th gift as she sang and sang was a roley poley ball of hay, just warped as huge circle. Her 5th gift was one that she danced with before wrapping, a multi coloured blanket knitted with hours of love. Her 6th and last gift was a large bunch of sweetcorn wrapped in golden leaves. She laid the gifts side by side under her glowing Christmas tree. She ventured towards her front door that hatched in half under a thatched roof porch and called on her family as she prepared there Christmas eve meal, once again as she sang she shouted, Daisy my happy cow, Percy my gorgeous piglet, Dorothy my cutest duckling, spencer my fluffy loving sheep, Fredrick my dearest donkey, and jingle jingle my chulip chicken come sing with me this our wonderful, thankful grateful Christmas eve. Christmas is a time for friends, family, loved ones, and those who need a hello, in the here and the here-after. All kinds of everything and all kinds of everyone remind us of love.

The Old Kerry Journal Vol.6 The Old Kerry Journal Vol 6, edited by Maurice and Jane O’Keeffe of Irish Life and Lore, displays articles and images on Kerry’s long and storied history. Tralee historian, Russell McMorran, writes on the memorials in St. John the Evangelist Church in the town and Killarney’s Donald Cameron provides extracts from Kerry Days written by Olive Trench, daughter of the Land Agent to the Ardfert Estate. 2019 marks the centenary of the first meeting of Dáil Ėireann and historian Dr. Hélene O’Keeffe contextualises this pivotal event and the Kerry connection. Dromore Castle in Templenoe was built by the Mahony family in the 1830s and Jane O’Keeffe, author of Voices from the Great Houses: Cork and Kerry recounts the
testimony of Jane Waller and her happy childhood days at Dromore. Ballydonoghue is the ancestral place of Kildare resident Eamon Mulvihill who recalls landlord, John Benn Walsh, Lord Ormathwaite (17981881). Journalist Gordon Revington and his brother Joe, of the merchant family of The Mall, Tralee provide details of their family history and 108 eventful years in business. Micheal de Mordha of West Kerry marks the 50th anniversary of the production of Ryan’s Daughter. He recalls the response locally, the cast and crew, and the financial benefit to the region. The Belfast Harp Festival of 1792, organised to collect and preserve the airs of the ancient instrument, is described by Killarney’s Tim Buckley. A Christmas night of harping at Killarney House in the 1750s is recalled.
Milltown’s Pat McKenna writes about the Spout on Spout Lane, a focal point in the village. Volume 6 of The Old Kerry
Journal will be available in Kerry bookshops and newsagents from December 10th. Price: Eu 12.

Who is your Kerry Hero ? It’s been a year of challenges for Kerry, on the football pitch,
weather wise, tragedies in our communities and the constant threat of Brexit to our economy. But through it all some individuals and groups have shown outstanding courage, vision and leadership. They made us proud to be from Kerry and as 2019 comes to a close Radio Kerry wants to honour them. We are delighted to welcome Fexco on board as proud sponsors of the Kerry Heroes of 2019 Awards. Over the coming weeks we will be inviting Radio Kerry listeners to let us know who they consider to be the Kerry Heroes of 2019. Once all the entries have been received a panel comprising of Radio Kerry and Fexco representatives will decide on the 2019 awards recipients. On Monday December 23rd Jerry O Sullivan will name and honour them on a special Kerry Today programme. We welcome nominations for Kerry Heroes of all ages. Please let us know, in no more than 500 words, who you wish to nominate, along with a photograph if possible by email kerrytoday@ radiokerry.ie or by post to Kerry Heroes, Kerry Today, Radio Kerry, Maine Street, Tralee, Co Kerry. FITNESS!
(Daily from 1pm, onstreet & Public Car Parks)
HELLO STRONG PEOPLE I hope you’re all having a fantastic week.
This week I’m going to share some of the books that I recommend. (Books are always great Christmas gifts!)
The Chimp Paradox by Dr Steve Peters
CRUSHING IT! By Gary Vaynerchuk
Relentless by Tim S Grover
If you’re looking to pick up a new non fiction book, I highly recommend either of these three. Life Changing Books. This week I have started a mini ‘Christmas Cut’, 1) because Christmas is coming very soon and 2) because I’m already thinking about all of the amazing Irish food I’ll be having ! WHAT IS A CUT? To be “cutting” you need to be purposely and thoughtfully eating less calories than your maintenance (the amount of calories your body needs to stay the same). If you just eat a calorie deficit without resistance training and only cardio training you may lose more muscle than intended. For most people, holding onto hard earned muscle when cutting is paramount. Muscle is more metabolic than other tissue (fat included). It is also slow and takes time and effort to build, so don’t give it up easily. When cutting, do it properly! The last time I did a proper consistent cut was a while ago so I feel ready to start another cut again to lean out some bit. By cut I do not mean eating very low calories or cutting out carbs!! I mean I will be SLOWLY cutting my calories over the few weeks. My main goal for this cut is to be consistent. As I have said before, consistency is absolutely key! I don’t have a set ‘weight loss goal’ or anything like that in mind, I just want to see consistent progress over time, that’s it!

CHRISTMAS RECIPES Winter Cooking means tasty cooking!!! Winter cooking can be just as exciting as springtime when you put some thought into it . And its not that hard! Here is a tasty one with butternut squash, a favourite to get the taste buds going!
BUTTERNUT SQUASH, SUN-DRIED TOMATO, AND GOAT CHEESE QUESADILLAS INGREDIENTS • • • • • • • • •
1 cup butternut squash, diced about 1/2-inch thick 4 large sundried tomatoes in oil, sliced into strips + 1/2 teaspoon oil Sea salt 1 teaspoon canola oil Four 8-inch flour tortillas 2/3 cup freshly grated mozzarella I use once upon a cheese 1/4 cup goat cheese I use dingle farmhouse goat cheese 2 green onions, thinly sliced Coriander leaves for garnish
METHOD Preheat the oven to 160°. In a small bowl, toss the squash with a 1/4 teaspoon of sundried tomato oil and season with salt and pepper. Spread the squash in a single layer on a parchment lined baking sheet. Roast for 15 minutes, until lightly browned in spots and softened. In a non-stick pan ,heat 1/2 teaspoon of the canola oil. Place one tortilla in the pan and sprinkle 1/3 cup of the grated mozzarella evenly over the top. Scatter half of the tomatoes over and then sprinkle with 2 tablespoons of goat cheese and some sliced green onions. Top the quesadilla with the second tortilla and cook until crisp on the bottom, about 3 minutes. Carefully flip it over and cook on the second side until the cheese is melted, for about another 2-3 minutes. Repeat with the reserved oil to make the second quesadilla. Cut into wedges, garnish with chopped green onions and coriander, and serve right away.

(Daily from 1pm, onstreet & Public Car Parks)
IN MOSCOW, BETWEEN THE '80S AND THE '90S
Two friends are waiting in the breadline, when one of them says: "Ugh, I can't take it anymore, we're waiting from 4 hours and still nothing." "Yeah, and so? What are you gonna do?" "Know what? Let's end all this! I'm gonna kill Gorbachëv!" And he walks away. After some time, he returns to his friend. "So? Did you kill him?" "No! The line there is even longer!"
AN OLD MAN FEELS A SLIGHT PRECIPITATION FALLING FROM THE SKY.
"It's snowing!" the old man says excitedly to his wife. "That isn't snow", the wife replies. "Are you sure? Because this feels a lot like snow to me", the old man says. "You see that man over there in the crimson hat and jacket? He is Rudolph, go and ask him if it's snowing", the wife says. So the old man walks up and asks Rudolph "Is it snowing right now?" He gets his question answered and goes back to his wife. "It's not snowing, it's raining!" he exclaims. "See?" the wife says. "Rudolph the Red knows rain, dear."

WORKING AT AN UNEMPLOYMENT OFFICE MUST BE SO TENSE.

WHAT DO YOU CALL A ONELEGGED HIPPO? A hoppo
SO I WAS AT THE BARBERSHOP THE OTHER DAY.
While i was being cut an old man came in. "Listen", he said. "I need someone to trim my sideburns. I can't do it myself anymore because i got so many wrinkles and shaky hands." "No problem", said the barber. "You're not the first one with this problem old friend, just keep this small wooden ball in your mouth and press it against your cheek while i trim your sideburns there." So the man takes the wooden ball in his mouth and follows the barber's directions. "Well i'll be damned! This is the cleanest shave i've had in years", cries the old man. "i've got to ask though", said the old man. "What would've happened if i accidentally swallowed the ball?". "Oh not a problem", said the barber. "It happens quiete often. People just return the ball the next day".

EV CAR SPIKE PREDICTED FOR 2020
DISTRIBUTORS here have mixed expectations about meeting the major increase in demand for electric cars next year. Some have more orders for cars than they can supply, while others are confident they will have plenty of stock. All expect sizeable increases in demand for EVs particularly from private buyers. However, Nissan's James McCarthy says: "Unfortunately, the loss of the grant for business buyers will have an impact on those sales, which accounted for about 25pc of all EVs in 2019. We have seen in other markets when the support is dropped sales tend to fall off the cliff. "What will hopefully compensate for that loss will be strong growth in public sector purchases, so hopefully it will be a strong year overall." It will be fascinating to see what happens and if brands with more supply will benefit from disappointed customers from other makes who are struggling to meet demand. A limited and brief snapshot of those with, or soon to have, EVs on the market yielded a mixed bag of supply-and-demand results. Hyundai sees supply being "very tight again" in 2020. It expects to easily exceed this year's Q1 registrations in Q1 2020 - with supply being the only caveat. KIA says it has "more orders than we can supply". Mercedes here believes supply could be restricted, though it has no official confirmation as of yet. But it feels at this stage that demand will be greater than the ability to supply. The story is different for Mini which, despite Mini Electric demand exceeding initial estimates, is confident of being able to supply models. Peugeot's first full electric, the e208, is arriving in January and has sparked "huge interest" according to a spokesman. It reckons it has "a great supply" on the way, but January will tell if it has the numbers right. Renault, too, insists it has plenty of supply to meet the anticipated demand, with increased EV capacity at its Flins plant near Paris. It is now ramping up production on the new 395km Zoe Z.E. 50 (right-hand-drive deliveries from March). "Supply is expected to be unconstrained," a spokeswoman said. Meanwhile, Tesla told Independent Motors: "We don't provide commentary on our sales or the industry." Volkswagen has hundreds of orders for the midsummer arrival of its ID.3 first edition. It will have supply to meet that level of demand, and for late next year/early 2021 when less-expensive models come on stream. Latest SIMI figures show 3,420 new electric vehicles have been registered so far this year (up from 1,224 last year). That will surge next year and account for 21pc of all new cars bought in 2021, according to some distributors. Would you switch brands to get a new electric car? Email: ecunningham@independent.ie Indo Motoring
WANT TO BE A GREENER DRIVER ?
1 Go electric - If changing your car, why not consider a hybrid or an electric car? Hybrids are good if you do a mix of urban and motorway, or consider a plug-in hybrid and dip into the electric car experience of plugging your car in overnight. Ideally, buy the greenest option you can afford and don't underestimate how good electric cars are. 2 Reduce your speed - You can reduce emissions by reducing speed. So stay within the speed limit and when stuck in traffic, switch off the engine. 3 Get a service - Cost-cutting on maintenance is a false economy. Taking good care of your car is an easy way to prolong its driving life and cut costs. Regular checks on the oil, fluid levels and tyres will pay huge dividends. 4 Share with friends - Sharing your car is a great way to save money. Car-pooling with neighbours, friends or colleagues will not only reduce the fuel you use but also the wear and tear on your car. 5 Lighten your load - You can save money and be more eco-friendly by simply ensuring your tyres are correctly pumped up and avoid carrying unnecessary clutter in the boot. 6 Plan trips in advance - Consolidate your shopping trips and use the car prudently. The more you drive, the more fuel you use, especially on short trips. 7 Smooth driving - Driving style has the greatest impact on exhaust emissions, so control your acceleration and braking. To drive more efficiently, don't rev the engine and change up into a higher gear as soon as it is possible; correct use of gears can save you up to 15pc of your fuel bill. Plan ahead, anticipate stop signs and lights, the less you have to stop, the better your fuel economy. Remember driving just 8km/h over the speed limit can affect fuel consumption by 23pc, the most fuel-efficient speed is 75-80km/h. 8 Leave the car at home - Commuters can make significant savings on Dublin Bus, Bus Eireann, and Irish Rail services by purchasing tickets through the Taxsaver.ie scheme. Designed to encourage people to use public transport to travel to and from work, it's worth considering if fuel and parking costs are making your daily commute unaffordable. Consider also a combination of bike and public transport for those longer commutes. (Sunday Independent)
HOT TOYOTA YARIS GR-4 IMMINENT REVEAL
Toyota is poised to unveil a Gazoo Racing performance version of the new Yaris, with a preview video stating the car is "coming soon". The model, set to be a rally-inspired hot Yaris featuring four-wheel drive and badged 'GR-4', was due to be unveiled at Rally Australia earlier this month. However, the unveil was shelved with the event's cancellation due to devastating wildfires. It's now expected in the first few weeks of 2020, The machine will effectively succeed the previous generation’s limited-run Yaris GRMN as the range-topping version of the small hatch. The 4 in GR-4 is believed to stand for four-wheel drive, which would bring it in line with the Yaris WRC that the firm has fielded in the top level of world rallying since 2017. It is possible that the new car will serve as a ‘homologation special’, forming the basis for the next-generation Yaris WRC.At the launch of the revamped Yaris recently, Toyota’s executive vice-president, Matt Harrison, told Autocar that a performance version of the model would likely be launched to strengthen the link between Toyota’s road cars and its Gazoo Racing motorsport arm. Toyota secured the 2018 World Rally Championship manufacturers’ title with the Yaris WRC, with Ott Tanak claiming this year’s driver’s title.

Lovely 'Good news in Tralee' Story posted by Christine Klein on Tralee Do you Know this week ! "I popped into town today to collect my daughter's keys at Kerry radioand when I parked close to the studio I looked in my purse and had no change, legit NOT ONE COIN. So I stood there cursing at the machine opposite Kellihers while a young man ahead of me just let out a ticket for himself. Suddenly he turned around to me and simply offered me his ticket. "Don't worry, I have enough change!" I could not believe it and when I thanked him for surely the 12th time he just laughed and smiled at me and said:" You are fine"! I think these little gestures are so huge and can really make someone's day. I often do that on the till if someone has only a few things, I just let them in front of me and also have given the remains of my parking ticket to people just parking, kindness is free and so big! Just to point out once again that there are such nice people in our lovely Tralee community..And IF this lovely young man happens to read this I want to thank him for the 13th time — feeling blessed.

two from the line to see the Warriors eliminate last year’s Cup champions and set up a mouthwatering semi-final date with DBS Éanna in Cork in early January.
with “The Voice” Pat Harnett
FAI NATIONAl P.R.O. OF THE YEAR TRALEE TO MALLOW ROAD WILL BE BUSY ON SUNDAY: Munster final appearances do not come around that often for Tralee sides but this Sunday is one of those big days. Na Gaeil will be flying the Kerry flag as they take on Mullinahone in the Munster Junior Championship final hoping to emulate Templenoe who won the Intermediate version last Sunday. This is the first time for this proud club to reach this level and hopefully by Sunday evening they will have an even bigger game to look forward to. Like all teams from Kerry that go outside the county they will have the support of everyone and we wish the team, management and the whole club all the best. At this time of the year it is all about what you will get on the morning of the 25th but for those playing on Sunday if they can have a nice shiny Munster Championship medal in their hands they mightn’t worry too much about what they get for the rest of the month. With the game as part of a double header in Mallow with the Munster Premier Junior Hurling final the curtain raiser taking the supporters bus might be the best way to travel. Those intending to do this must book in advance with places costing e10 with u18’s free. Na Gaiel warm up with a win: Na Gaeil warmed up for the big day by winning the St Brendan’s Board Final defeating St Pat’s. The town side was always in control with Diarmuid Herlihy hitting the net to leave them 1-07 to 0-02 up at half time. The hit two more goals – from Diarmuid O’Connor and Jamie Lowham and won easily on a 3-20 to 0-06 score line. Na Gaeil captain Eoin Doody was presented with the trophy by the Chair of the St Brendan’s Board Liam Sayers. BIG WEEKEND AT MOUNTHAWK PARK: On Sunday Kerry face a must win game in the 3rd Group game of this year’s Oscar Traynor competition. Kerry drew 0-0 with Limerick Desmond in their first game and were very unlucky not to get something from their next game away in Clare where they went down 1-0. The face the Limerick District League who defeated Clare but were then beaten 5-0 by Limerick Desmond knowing nothing less than 3 points will give them a chance of progressing.

The game will be a double header with Limerick District also the visitors in the Youths Inter League with both games kicking off at 2pm. Also at the KDL a Delegate Meeting will take place on Monday December 8th with the draws for the first rounds of the Greyhound Bar KO Cup, Dominos Pizza Cup and the Jimmy Falvey Memorial Cup taking place plus the quarter finals of the Celsius Menswear Cup also being done on the night. SEMI-FINAL DEFEAT AVENGED AS WARRIORS DETHRONE CUP CHAMPIONS: Garvey’s Tralee Warriors are through to the semi-final of the Hula Hoops Pat Duffy National Cup for the second season in a row by dethroning the reigning champions Pyrobel Killester after a hard fought 76-64 win at the Tralee Sport Complex last Saturday night. As if by way of exorcising the memory of last season’s defeat to the same opposition in the Cup semi-final, the Warriors opened with a statement of clear intent with Eoin Quigley, Daniel Jokubaitis and Kieran Donaghy all firing in three point efforts to seize the early initiative. Killester were dangerous in patches and closed the gap but a huge Jon Lawton 3 and a Rap Buivydas basket saw the Warriors lead 19-11 at the end of the first. The Warriors pushed on and were 14 up early in the second but again the Dublin side fought back. However when it looked like they would really trouble the home side scores from Lawton, Quigley and Fergal O’Sullivan keeping the Cup champions at arms -length and when Kieran Donaghy was unerring with two from two from the line the Warriors led 38-25 as the sides headed for the long break. With Buivydas, Paul Dick, Quigley and Ivan Bogdanovic scoring the Warriors maintained their double figure advantage and took a 57-46 lead down the home stretch. Killester were never going to give up the Cup easily and even when the gap was a small as three points it always looked like the Warriors would win and the hit the Cup holders for seven straight points including a vital steal and game winning three to put 11 between the sides in the shadows of the winning post. Rap Buivydas capped another impressive display with a lay-up before Jon Lawton made doubly sure with two from Friday 6th December 2019
Scorers: Warriors: Jonathan Lawton 18, Daniel Jokubaitis 15, Eoin Quigley 13 with Killester seeing Mintautas Bulanovas hit 18, Tomas Fernandez on 14 and Kason Harrell with 13. Next Up: Warriors PRO Alan Cantwell who did a great job calling the game last Saturday night said this week sees another big win for the Warriors. “Coughlan C&S Neptune are coming to the Sports Complex on Saturday night in a huge game in terms of the SuperLeague. Another big crowd is needed to cheer the boys to another win. Tip- off is at 7.30pm. The Warriors organisation deserve great credit for the game night experience with Liam O’Connor getting the crowd going last Saturday night while the also donated the proceeds of the half time raffle to two young girls who are battling cancer. Locally: Looking at some of the Kerry Airport Kerry Area Basketball Board games and from a point of view and in the u12 Boys Division 1 Imperials went down 41-44 away to Gneeveguilla. Tralee Tigers lost out away to Glenbeigh Falcons in the u16 Boys Division 2 Pool 1. In the u16 Girls Imperials were 24-20 point winners at St Colmans while St Brendan’s were 1 point winners in the u14 Girls Division 2 Pool 3. BRUDDY BURROWS TOURNAMENT BRINGS TOP BASKETBALL SIDES TO TOWN: St. Brendan's Basketball Club is both proud and delighted to be hosting the Bruddy Burrows Memorial U12 Tournament this Saturday 7th December at Moyderwell and Presentation Gym in Tralee. Action gets underway at both venues at 9.00am and the club would like to extend a big welcome to the teams taking part including Tralee Imperials BC, St Marys Basketball Club Castleisland, Ballymacelligott Bobcats Basketball Club, Dublin Lions Basketball Club, Moycullen Basketball, Gneeveguilla Bc, St. Joseph's Basketball Club, EJ Sligo All-Stars, and St. Paul's BC, Killarney. The round robin games will continue until each group is sorted into first, second and third. The respective Plate, shield and Cup semi- finals will then take place at both gyms before the finalists in each competition make their way to Moyderwell for the decider. ALL READY FOR SANTA’S FUN RUN As we are now in the festive season the Santa 5k Fun Run is back for the 7th year. Sunday December 15th is the big day when those taking part will turn out in red and white and in seasonal costumes for the 5km starting at the Wetlands. In the 7 years the Fun Run has raised over e50,000 for good
causes and this year the beneficiary will be the Jack and Jill Foundation. All those taking part will get a specially created medal this year with a festive scene of Santa at the Windmill. Those wishing to take part can click on eventbrite.ie to sign up. TRALEE RUGBY CLUB NEWS: The Tralee Ladies played Thurles in Division 1 in O’Dowd Park. The home side started well keeping Thurles in their own half putting pressure on their defensive line. Thurles gave away a penalty with Laoise O’Driscoll splitting the posts to give Tralee a 3-0 lead. Their pressure then paid off again when a great break by scrum half Muirne Wall set up Anna Murphy for the games first try and O’Donnell converted to leave Tralee 10-0 at the break. With both teams knowing the next score would be vital both defences put in big efforts and it was Tralee who got the vital score when Ashlea Sheehy went over in the corner to increase the home sides lead to 15. Thurles threw everything at Tralee to try and get back into the game but the home side were determined not to give up and scored and will be delighted to have kept a clean sheet. The pressure broke the Thurles girls again when Aine Enright got on the end of a flowing move and went over for Tralee’s third try and again O’Driscoll was unerring with the conversion to leave the final score Tralee 22-0 Thurles. The Tralee team was Kasey Hislop, Melanie McKnight, Jamie Mullins, Caolainn Healy, Ellie Daly, Diana O Keeffe, Siobhan Fleming, Aine Enright, Muirne Wall, Anna Murphy (c), Vivienne Keary, Laoise O Driscoll, Ashlea Sheehy, Vanessa Dineen, Riona Kennedy. Subs: Michaela Murphy, Katie Hartnett, Emily O Sullivan, Carmel Kelliher and Ellen Clifford Listowel /Tralee U18s and Killorglin shared 5 tries apiece in an entertaining friendly in Tralee on Saturday. Killorglin kicked all 5 conversions to edge a high scoring match by 35-29. Defensive organisation was in short supply in a much changed line-up from last week’s cliff hanger. Killorglin scored the opening try from a clever grubber behind our defensive line. They extended the lead from an interception in midfield. Jerry Finnegan pulled one back after a series of close in rucks before Killorglin scored another from a cross field kick. Jerome O’Rourke crashed over from close range after Cale Sweeney was tackled just short of the line. Sean Stack-Pullen converted to narrow the gap to 2112 at half time. Killorglin extended the lead from a quickly taken penalty early on the second half. Kian Dowling then powered over for a fine try after an extended period of forward pressure. Sean again converted. We moved the ball well through the backs before Shane Donnellan capped a fine personal
