Funding for communities to deliver water, biodiversity, and climate action initiatives. 2
Community Water Development Fund now open for 2021 The Community Water Development Fund aims to support the delivery of local projects and initiatives to address issues in water quality, biodiversity loss and climate change. The fund is administered by the Local Authority Waters Programme (LAWPRO) on behalf of the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage and is available to all community and voluntary groups. LAWPRO opened the 2021 fund on Saturday 28 November at the annual seminar of Irish Rivers Trusts and Catchment Groups. The seminar saw 246 people gather from across the whole of Ireland to share knowledge and experiences of ‘Communities Caring for Water’. Speaking at the event Sheevaun Thompson, Funding lead with LAWPRO said “demand for the Community Water Development Fund has increased year on year since it was first launched in 2018 and it is exciting to announce that the fund has been increased to €360,000 in 2021, up from €225,000 in 2020. This will allow LAWPRO to support even more locally led community projects next year.”

has been a challenging year. Our team at the Meadowlands Hotel wants to ensure sparkling festive memories by creating new traditions. This year the O Mathuna family wanted to share their family tradition of relaxing & sharing stories with tasty nibbles & bites over the festive season. The family’s seafood company, Iasc Uí Mhathúna has teamed up with Meadowlands Hotel to produce fabulous festive grazing boxes with Seafood being the speciality but with plenty more to suit all tastes. We may not be allowed to celebrate as we have in previous years, however smaller gatherings of close friends and family together with a grazing or sharing box will make for magical memories!

Minister Foley announces €1.6 million ICT grant funding for Kerry schools Minister for Education and Kerry TD Norma Foley has this week announced over €1.6 million in Information and Communications Technology (ICT) Grants for Kerry primary and post-primary schools to be paid in early December, 2020. Minister Foley said: “We are all aware of the importance of digital learning and skills in our modern world, and I am delighted to announce this funding to equip our schools for this purpose. This funding will allow Kerry schools to purchase the digital devices and technologies that their students need. Approximately 162 schools in Kerry will benefit from this funding. “This funding can be used to purchase equipment such
as projectors and tablets or to support the use of online learning platforms. These grants will be automatically issued to all primary, special and post-primary schools in early December. Grants are paid on the basis of school type and enrollment. “For example, a 60 pupil primary school will receive €4,365 and a 300 pupil school will receive up to €12,475. “In the case of a post-primary school this will consist of a €2,000 basic grant plus €43.26 per mainstream student and €47.58 per student in DEIS schools (as of 30 September 2019). “A 500 student school will receive up to €36,880 and a 1,000 student school would

“Support Gina’s virtual raffle in Comfort for Chemo “
Hi my name is Gina Herlihy .I live in Firies and over the passed 2 years while hosting 2 little Women’s Christmas fundraising events I have raised €10,100 for cancer charities. This year due to Covid I had to find another way to fundraise so decided on a virtual raffle. I reached out to local businesses and both they and local people were very generous and very giving with the fantastic prizes that they sponsored. I started my fundraising as I lost both my parents to cancer. My mother was just 46 and I was 15 and I remember her travelling to and from Cork for her treatment. I am hoping that this raffle will raise much needed funds for Comfort for Chemo Kerry who are on a mission to build a new state of the art separate unit on the grounds of KUH for the people of Kerry who are in need of chemotherapy services. I’m very proud to be a fundraiser for this amazing charity and I thank the community of Firies and beyond for their continued support. Please donate to this go fund me page and for every €10 you donate, your name will be entered into the raffle on Dec 8th. Check out the page for prizes on offer. Just visit http://gofund.me/4decab9f
Kerry Airport & Bon Secours Hospital Tralee Provide Covid-19 Tests For Air Passengers KERRY Airport Ireland and Bon Secours Hospital Tralee will provide Covid-19 tests for pre and post air travellers in and out of Kerry Airport this Christmas and into the New Year. The 5-step online self-referral tests will ONLY be carried out at Bon Secours Hospital Tralee, not at Kerry Airport. For the lowest cost in the country for such a test (€80) and after the correct isolation period, to reduce risk of false negatives, they will provide this essential testing to help keep people safe and reunite those who need somebody this Christmas. Management at Kerry Airport express their gratitude to T.J. O’Connor, Luke O’Sullivan and all the team at Bon Secours Hospital Tralee who have offered their ‘good help’ by providing Gold Standard PCR COVID testing to our passengers. The Chief Executive of Kerry Airport Ireland, John Mulhern, said: “It’s beyond comprehension that it has become such a difficult decision, whether to travel

home or not. This is something that our Diaspora would not give a second thought about any other year. But this is not any year and, so far, the advice from those who know is ‘don’t travel’ because the risks associated with COVID transmission are too high. “Most will sacrifice the trip this time for the greater good, but for some there are people very special to them who live alone or have lost all their social outlets this year. Many are feeling depressed or at least a little sad and need company. These visits home are essential to their health and well-being and we must make them possible, but safe.” There are currently two daily return flights between Kerry Airport and Dublin with Aer Lingus Regional while Ryanair are due to resume their services to London (Luton and Stansted) in mid-December. Passengers who wish to undergo a Covid test can visit: https://www.bonsecours. ie/bst_selfreferralform Once referral form has been completed, the Laboratory Department at Bon Secours
Hospital Tralee will confirm the appointment date and time via email. The routine hours for the swabbing clinic are daily between 8.15am to 10am, Monday to Saturday and when presenting for the Covid-19 test, please bring proof of identification (Passport/ Drivers License) with you.The swabbing clinic is in the Staff Carpark of the Bon Secours Hospital Tralee. The entrance to the Clinic is via the Matt Talbot Road. This is a drive through clinic and you will be asked to remain in your car. A payment of €80 for the test

may be made online when making the referral or over the phone when the appointment is being confirmed. Passengers are advised that the tests will be carried out at Bon Secours Hospital Tralee and NOT at Kerry Airport. If you are experiencing a temperature over 37.8 degrees, a new continuous cough, lose your sense of smell and/or taste or you are self-isolating, please contact your GP.

Boots Ireland Becomes the First Pharmacy in Ireland to Offer COVID-19 Testing Service in Stores Boots Ireland today announces the launch of an in-store COVID-19 PCR testing service, specifically and only available for customers without COVID-19 symptoms. Boots Ireland is the first pharmacy group to offer COVID-19 testing in Ireland. Initially the testing service will be available in seven stores with plans to roll out to further stores across Ireland after demand is assessed. From tomorrow, December 4th, the following Boots stores will offer the testing service: • • • • • • •
Letterkenny Retail Park, Co. Donegal Gateway Shopping Park, Knocknacarra, Co. Galway Half Moon St, Co. Cork Naas Monread Shopping Centre, Co. Kildare Dawson St, Dublin 2 Church Street, Tullamore, Co. Offaly Ashbourne Town Centre, Co. Meath
This testing service is being launched in response to new Government guidelines that came into effect on November 29th 2020 allowing passengers arriving from an orange, red or grey region, as determined by the EU traffic light approach to travel, to end their period of restricted movement on receipt of a negative/not detected PCR test taken a minimum of five days after arrival in Ireland. As the travel guidelines change on a regular basis, customers will need to keep up to date on requirements as set out by the Department of Foreign Affairs and www.gov.ie. The in-store testing service will launch at €139 per test and customers can expect to receive their results the day following their test. The price of the test reflects costs related to lab testing, product materials, in-store infection control measures, courier
service, staffing and VAT. The COVID-19 PCR test is currently the gold standard for COVID-19 testing in Ireland. To obtain a COVID-19 test, customers will be able to book in on https://www. boots.ie/covid-19-testingservice the day before the test is scheduled. Online pre-screening will take place before people come to store to ensure that they are not currently experiencing
COVID-19 symptoms. The test will take place between 9am – 1pm and once in store, a testing-trained Boots Pharmacist will facilitate the swab test, package the swab and send it to the laboratory to be tested. The results will be made available to customers the following day. More information on this service is available on boots.ie.

Grab Your Mask! It’s Time To Shop.
Lockdown is over and Tralee is open for business! But the good news doesn’t end there. From now until January 4th, PARKING IN TOWN IS FREE! Plus, many of our lovely, considerate retailers are extending their opening hours so you don’t miss out on your Christmas shopping. Tuesday, December 1 was a special day that saw crowds, weary from six weeks of restrictions, don their masks, maintain a safe distance and head into town, delighted to be out and about again. For many, it was their first opportunity to see the beautiful Christmas lights zig zagging overhead, adding a warm, festive vibe to proceedings. Finally, the impressively massive tree in the Square had an audience to appreciate it. Shopkeepers and retailers, the beating heart of Tralee, couldn’t have been happier to have their tills chinking away, ringing up sales as punters chose to support their community by shopping local. With plenty of hand sanitiser at the ready and punters adhering to the rules, it looks like Santa Clause will be coming to town this year after all.
Foley welcomes €50 million once-off Covid payment scheme for College Students Kerry TD and Minister for Education Norma Foley has welcomed funding of €50 million for college students. SUSI and institutions will be communicating directly with students over the coming weeks on this matter. FITNESS!
Hello everyone! Hope you’re having a great week. I know the mornings are a little dark now but it’s still great to get up early and make the most of the day! This week I’m talking all about how to stay motivated & the benefits of morning exercise! (Or just exercising before you start your day) I myself am not the best morning person, at all. But I’ve been researching the benefits of morning exercise and I must say, it makes me think twice about pressing that snooze button! •
When you exercise early in the morning, it “jump starts” your metabolism and keeps it elevated for hours. That means you’re burning more calories all day long just because you exercised in the morning! Exercising first thing in the morning is the only way to assure something else won’t get in the way of your workout. If you are hit with a really busy day your exercise could be put on the back burner! Exercising in the morning energizes you for the day, not to mention that gratifying feeling of virtue you have knowing you’ve done something disciplined and good for you. More than 90% of those who exercise consistently have a morning fitness routine. If you want to exercise on a regular basis, the odds are in your favour if you squeeze your workout into the a.m. Studies have shown that women and men who wake up early for regular exercise sleep better than those who routinely exercise in the evening. Since exercise stimulates your body, when you exercise at night, it becomes more difficult to fully relax and drift into peaceful sleep. By knocking out your exercise first thing, you will approach your food differently throughout the day. You will be proud of yourself for getting up and burning some calories, so why sabotage it with an unhealthy lunch? Instead, you will want to continue your positive choices by eating foods that make you feel fresh and energized.

HOW TO STAY MOTIVATED!
Think Positive: I am a huge believer in the power of positive thinking! Instead of saying ‘I hope I don’t gain weight’ say ‘I will lose weight’. Positive thoughts can turn into positive things. Make Goals: To help stay on track I find it’s best to make goals, both longterm(monthly) and shortterm(daily/weekly). If you don’t make goals it is very easy to fall off the wagon! Visualise: Visualise yourself when you are at your goal weight/ fitness level. Buy a dress the size you strive to be and hang it in your room, print out motivational quotes and images and stick them up! Do whatever works best for you. Reward Yourself: For every goal you reach it’s good to have a corresponding reward. For example, a new pair of shoes, a spa trip, new workout gear, a night out with the girls. Change up your workout: If you stick to the same workout routine everyday you could get bored and your workouts could become less effective. It’s good to change up your workout routine every week or so to keep both your body and mind motivated.

HEALTHY RECIPES for 2020
My Best Turkey Recipe (Even though I prefer a Goose!)
While I love a Goose for Christmas dinner, most houses go for the traditional Turkey whether it is the Turkey crown or a complete Turkey ... Here is a little tip, Turkey benefits from a good brine before roasting .This really brings out the flavour! So here is my Christmas roast turkey recipe just for you Right , the benefit of brining... any white meat stays moist and tender if brined. It adds flavour to start with a simple brine and you can develop the flavour profile over time. Brine the turkey in a 5% brine solution remove from brine and allow to dry for a few hours in the fridge then pat dry with paper towel turn the oven up to 325 degrees to pre heat it , turn it down to 185 c Place the turkey, breast side up, on a rack in the roasting pan. Loosely fill the body cavity with stuffing. Rub the skin with the softened butter, and season with salt and pepper. Position a tin foil tent over the turkey. place the turkey in the oven and pour 2 cups stock into the bottom of the roasting pan. Baste all over every 30 minutes with the juices on the bottom of the pan. Whenever the drippings evaporate, add stock to moisten them, about 1 to 2 cups at a time. Remove tin foil after 2 1/2 hours. Roast until a meat thermometer inserted in the meaty part of the thigh reads 75 degrees), about 4 hours. transfer the turkey to a large serving platter, and let it stand for at least 20 to 30 minutes before carving Brining rules 1. A brine solution is usually the same ratio of salt to water. Use about 50g coarse salt to 1 litre water. 2. You shouldn’t brine for longer than necessary or you will just end up with salty, mushy meat, calculate 1 hour per 500g of meat. 3. The easiest way to make and cool a brine quickly is to heat half the amount of water you need with the salt and any aromatics you are adding, then after the salt is dissolved, add the rest of the water, making sure it is as cold as possible. Make sure the brine is completely cold before you use it. 4. Keep the turkey in the fridge while you brine it 5. Brine 6. Makes 2 litres 200g coarse salt 100g golden caster sugar 2 bay leaves 5 peppercorns 1 orange, zested 1. 2.
Put all the ingredients in a pan and add 1 litre of water, bring to a simmer and stir to dissolve the sugar and salt. Add 1 litre cold water and leave the brine to cool completely.
Let me know if you enjoyed them and we will continue our healthy eating next week and remember to send your quetions to: askchefnoel@hotmail.com

HQ Kerry co-working spaces now part of the new Happen brand Happen, a network of co-working spaces in the Midwest region was launched last week . The network, facilitated by Innovate Limerick and the Local Enterprise Offices (LEOs) in Clare, Limerick, and Tipperary, comprises both public and private co-working spaces across these three counties. North Kerry’s HQ Tralee & Listowel is also affiliated to the new branded network.Happen will connect new and existing hubs in the Midwest to facilitate working in a changed environment and create a community for remote workers in the Midwest. The creation of the network was prompted by the impact that COVID-19 has had on how and where people work and the demand for a more collaborative form of remote working. It will create a community for isolated workers in the region. Happen also aims to reduce commuting time in the Midwest by facilitating remote working for those whose main office is based in other urban areas, for example Dublin.
HQ Kerry’s co-owners, Tom O’Leary and Ken Tobin welcoming the inclusion of HQ spaces in Listowel and Tralee in the Happen network said: “Collaboration is the key to everything. We see this everyday in our hubs in Listowel & Tralee. Joining the Happen network of co-working spaces opens our members and our hubs up to wider opportunities to expand and grow. Through this partnership we will be able to collaborate with other hubs to bring more expertise and support to our members in HQKerry.“Critical for us here in Kerry is to work closely with our colleagues throughout the Midwest region in order to attract new jobs through our hubs. We will be using the strength of this network to develop relationships and leads with large employers to set up a base in the hubs in the Happen network. Leah Morgan, Happen operations manager with Innovate Limerick explains the rationale for the new brand: “ Our members realise that there is more to life than a long commute and living somewhere they don’t enjoy. Happen strives to help people create a better work-life balance, by providing high-quality co-working facilities in the Midwest. We are challenging traditional urban-rural divides and offering flexible work locations in cities, towns and villages. Each hub within the Happen network will provide modern co-work spaces for freelancers, startups and remote workers alike and enable tenants and users of each individual space to connect and collaborate with each other through their membership of the network, be that through the use of a hot desk, a fixed desk or a private office within the specific hub. Co-working spaces within the Happen network include HQ Tralee and Listowel, Engine Limerick, the Yard Workspace, Newcastle West, with new hubs being added in counties Clare and Tipperary in the coming months. To find out more about Happen or to book a co-working space, simply log onto www.happenspace.ie Happen can also be found on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter @happenmidwest

The Late Late Toy Show 2020 raises €6.5 million and wins the hearts of viewers at home and across the world The eagerly anticipated Late Late Toy Show 2020 captured the hearts of viewers at home and across the world at the weekend, raising a staggering €6.5 million for The Late Late Toy Show Appeal, with viewers watching from 138 countries. With presenter Ryan Tubridy at the helm, the core message of this year’s show was one of celebration of the wonderful children of Ireland - those here and those who can’t make it home this Christmas - during what has been a difficult year for all. Viewers were bowled over by the show’s little stars including Galway girl Saoirse Ruane, whose story inspired the establishment of The Late Late Toy Show Appeal, and Adam King from Cork, who won the hearts of the nation with his aspirations to work in ground control at NASA. The show also featured a surprise duet from Dermot Kennedy with Ballina’s Michael Moloney, and little rock star Noah Rafferty being gifted a guitar from U2’s Edge. A heart-warming performance of Rule the World was sung by Eva Norton who
was joined by children from across the globe, sending messages to their loved ones back home. Eva was joined on lead vocals by Take That’s Gary Barlow. Saoirse Moynihan from Tralee told Ryan how she wants to become a vet and won plaudits from Minister Simon Harris on performing a Covid test on Toby , her pet dog . 1.5 million viewers watched the entire show themed The Wonderful World of Roald Dahl on RTÉ One on Friday night, representing a 79% audience share. TV viewing to Friday night’s show is now at 1.7 million, taking catch-up viewing on Saturday & Sunday into account. This makes it one of the highest rating TV programmes, on a single channel, on record. Online, The Late Late Toy Show exceeded 500,000 streams live and on-demand across the weekend, in what was a record-breaking weekend on RTÉ Player. Across RTÉ Social, The Late Late Toy Show videos
‘Supervet ‘ Saoirse Moynihan from Tralee on RTÉ’s Instagram and Facebook accounts had 5.85m views and generated total interactions of 830,000, while #LateLateToyShow was the number one worldwide trend on Twitter. Speaking today, Ryan Tubridy said: “The true essence and magic of The Late Late Toy Show was really captured this year with the wonderful children involved. To hear that it was beaming into 138 countries across the globe is just phenomenal.
The fact that children and their families who might not be able to get back home this Christmas got to join with us in unison was very important to us. The Irish people continue to astound with their ability to dig deep and support The Late Late Toy Show appeal, raising much-needed funds and truly exceeding all expectations with their generosity. I think it’s safe to say we are truly humbled by the reaction to the show.”
Kerry Macra Na Feirme – Mind Matters On Friday the 4th of December,(tonight !) Kerry Macra Na Feirme are hosting a virtual talk live on Facebook at 8PM which will focus on the importance of Mental Health. The night is aptly named ‘Mind Matters’ and will feature Kerry Radio’s Aisling O Brien as host, interviewing three well known speakers. With the growing suicide rate among rural youths and the in-general feeling of uncertainty this year, Kerry Macra Na Feirme felt a need to address the ever growing issue of Mental Health. It was County member Trevor Coffey who instigated the idea. Trevor has always been a passionate advocate for Mental Health and has openly spoken of his struggles in the past. We would strongly encourage people to tune in and encourage friends, family and loved ones who they feel may benefit from listening. First up on the night we have Finbarr Walsh from the Live Life foundation. Finbarr is the father of the late Donal

Walsh who tragically lost his battle with cancer in 2013. Donal fundraised relentlessly until the bitter end, promoting his anti-suicide #livelife message. The foundation was set up primarily to promote this message and will also assist in his other causes of providing age appropriate teenage facilities in hospital and hospice care centres. Our second speaker is Peter Hynes, a well-known Dairy farmer from Aherla in Cork. Peter and his wife Paula have been in the media spotlight recently for establishing the #agmentalhealth campaign. This consisted of a week in October dedicated to highlighting the importance of Mental health for those who work in Agriculture. A recent study found that farmers are three times more likely to die by suicide than any other occupation. Peter stated that the harsh reality is “we lose more farmers to suicide than we do to farm accidents.” Our last speakers, who will
be wrapping up the night are infamous in the world of Macra Na Feirme. ‘Make the Moove’ duo of John Keane and Johnathan Dwyer are paving the way in Agricultural Mental Health with a farmer led workshops and services that aim to break the stigma attached to mental health. John and Johnathan stated that “Farming can be a lonely occupation with little human interaction during the working day. Therefore, it is important to establish a network of support and provide an opportunity where farming

men can help one another.” Kerry Macra Na Feirme’s – Mind Matters talk aims to open up the conversation of Mental Health for farmers and those in Rural Ireland. We hope to shine a light on these issues and drive home the point that ‘Your Health is Your Wealth’. Mental Health is a silent killer which we hope to give a voice to. We hope to see you all virtually on the 4th of December at 8pm. Save the date, tell a mate and don’t forget that a problem shared is a problem halved. TRALEE ADVERTISER

IT’S ONLY A JOKE (All day - Public Car parks only!)
IN MOSCOW, BETWEEN THE '80S AND THE '90S
Two friends are waiting in the breadline, when one of them says: "Ugh, I can't take it anymore, we're waiting from 4 hours and still nothing." "Yeah, and so? What are you gonna do?" "Know what? Let's end all this! I'm gonna kill Gorbachëv!" And he walks away. After some time, he returns to his friend. "So? Did you kill him?" "No! The line there is even longer!"
AN OLD MAN FEELS A SLIGHT PRECIPITATION FALLING FROM THE SKY.
"It's snowing!" the old man says excitedly to his wife. "That isn't snow", the wife replies. "Are you sure? Because this feels a lot like snow to me", the old man says. "You see that man over there in the crimson hat and jacket? He is Rudolph, go and ask him if it's snowing", the wife says. So the old man walks up and asks Rudolph "Is it snowing right now?" He gets his question answered and goes back to his wife. "It's not snowing, it's raining!" he exclaims. "See?" the wife says. "Rudolph the Red knows rain, dear."

SO I WAS AT THE BARBERSHOP THE OTHER DAY.
While i was being cut an old man came in. "Listen", he said. "I need someone to trim my sideburns. I can't do it myself anymore because i got so many wrinkles and shaky hands." "No problem", said the barber. "You're not the first one with this problem old friend, just keep this small wooden ball in your mouth and press it against your cheek while i trim your sideburns there." So the man takes the wooden ball in his mouth and follows the barber's directions. "Well i'll be damned! This is the cleanest shave i've had in years", cries the old man. "i've got to ask though", said the old man. "What would've happened if i accidentally swallowed the ball?". "Oh not a problem", said the barber. "It happens quiete often. People just return the ball the next day".

TORQUING CARS!
(All day - Public Car parks only!)
MANUFACTURERS GEARING UP FOR 2021 WITH NEW MODELS TO PULL IN DRIVERS
CARMAKERS are stepping up the pace in the race for 2021 buyers with a plethora of new arrivals – and one future concept. Renault has just brought in several models: the Captur PHEV, Clio hybrid, Mégane Sport Tourer PHEV and Mégane hatch Phase 2. The Captur PHEV gets a new 1.6-litre petrol-electric powertrain and a 9.8kWh battery drives two electric motors with a 50km range of zero emission driving claimed. There is a new Pure mode especially for this model which allows for all-electric driving when the battery is fully charged. An E-Save function limits battery use and saves it for urban driving, for example. Total power output is 160hp and they claim fuel consumption is as low as 1.5l/100km with 33g/km of CO2. The new Clio hybrid has the same powertrain set-up as the Captur (1.6-litre petrol engine, two electric motors) and has a clutchless automatic transmission. They claim petrol consumption of 4.4l/100km and CO2 emissions of 98g/km. Renault say it can travel for some time on zero emissions at up to 60kmh in all-electric mode. It develops 140hp. Meanwhile the Mégane range gets a light facelift and the addition of a new plug-in hybrid which joins the Mégane Sport Tourer range. It has, of course, current TCe 140 and dCi 115 engines. The PHEV version also has a 1.6-litre petrol engine with two electric motors and clutch-less gearbox. The combined powertrain develops 160hp. Low (30g/km) CO2 and claimed 1.3 l/100km economy will attract attention from those thinking of switching to an “electrified” car. January prices, based on new VRT rates, include the Clio hybrid from €24,995, Captur PHEV from €34,695 with the Megane Sport Tourer PHEV from €34,990. Renault say prices are before SEAI grants which, if applied at €5,000 for both plug-in hybrids, should reduce prices to under €30,000 for private customers. :: ŠKODA have just announced prices for the new ENYAQ electric SUV. Before grants (and including a three-year service, tyre plan) the ENYAQ 60 will cost €46,570 OTR; the 80 will cost from €54,360. The brand reckons official incentives of up to €7,800 could be claimed for the 60 model (390km range, 58kWh battery) meaning a price from €38,762. Standard on the 60 are 19ins alloys, front parking sensors, LED headlights, climate control and 13ins infotainment system. The 80 has a 77kWh battery (up to 510km range) and adds drive-mode select, adaptive cruise control and 3-zone climate control. The CUPRA Formentor goes on sale next month, costing from €35,945. Among its five powertrains are two high-performance plug-in hybrids. The €35,945 start is for the 1.5 TSI 150hp version with €37,845 the price of the 1.5TSI 150hp DSG model. The highperformance VZ 2.0TSI 310hp DSG 4rive starts from €57,910. MG Motor is returning with a range of plug-in models. The Frank Keane group is taking care of operations. There is the MG ZS EV compact SUV with a seven-year warranty. It arrives soon and will be followed by the new MG5 EV larger family wagon and MG HS plug-in hybrid SUV. The new Golf R is the most powerful (320PS, 0-100kmh in 4.7 seconds) model in Volkswagen’s product line. Due here in February it will cost from €61,500. It is made by VW’s premium performance brand ‘R’ (which transfers elements of motorsport technologies into production models). It is set aside from the other Golf performers, the GTi and Clubsport, by large apertures in the front bumper and the cooling airtakes. It is 20mm lower, there are 18in disc brakes, blue callipers, 18ins wheels (225mm wide tyres) and twin tailpipe (a titanium exhaust system is optional). There are sports seats, and stainless steel pedals. The R button on the left of the new steering wheel lets you change the driving profile – you can go straight into race mode – so it is “instantly” a race car. The optional Performance package adds 19ins wheels (235mm tyres), top speed goes from 250lmh to 270kmh and there are two driver modes, Nurburgring and Drift, in addition to Sport (always starts in that), Comfort and Race. As well as pumping 320PS, the 2-litre 4cyl petrol engine develops 420Nm of torque and there is a 7spd dual-clutch gearbox. A key development is the new rear-drive unit of the AWD system with torque vectoring (lets the differential vary the pulling power to each wheel). As well as power shifts to the rear wheels, there is seamless transfer from left to right – and anything in between. It’s claimed to make a big difference on corners. :: The Land Rover Discovery, with its three rows and seven seats, has been substantially upgraded inside and out. As has been the case with lots of JLR cars this autumn, the Discovery gets the latest PIVI Pro infotainment system too – the 11ins touchscreen is 40pc larger than before and there is 3D 360-deg surround view. Each seat row is heated and each row can slide by 160m. There’s lots of storage space around the cabin and lots of room generally, especially when you drop the third row. Everyone can charge a device in all seats and there is Bluetooth for two smartphones. Among the more notable exterior changes are new alloys and headlamps with Matrix LED technology. The new sporty R-Dynamic trim is expected to be the most popular. No Irish pricing as yet. Power-sources now include diesels and petrols with 48v mild-hybrid technology as well as latest 6cyl petrol and diesel engines. Audi continues its electrification in the high performance segment with the reveal of its RS e-tron GT concept as its sporty flagship. It is the basis for their first fully electric highperformance model. The company says the prototype is “a revolution at Audi in the highperformance segment”. The suspension combines controlled damping, air suspension and all-wheel steering. Videos of the car’s performance show impressive speed and handling.

FULL SQUAD CAN TRAVEL!! Often we criticise the Government and indeed I have been known to have a cut of the present Minister for Sport Catherine Martin and her Deputy Jack Chambers for not speaking up on the benefits of sports during these tough times. But they have certainly made the right decision to allow full squads to attend the remaining GAA Championship games from this weekend on. It is a pity that the players on the squads who lost out in the All Ireland Hurling semi-finals and who were not on the match day 26 missed out. But it will have come as a great relief to the managers of the four teams in the football (and I won’t be cynical to say the rule was changed because Dublin are still involved!!) and of course to the four teams who will be in Croke Park on All Ireland hurling final day – Waterford, Tipperary, Antrim and most importantly Kerry. How was any manager put in the position of having to tell 5 or 6 players who were probably at every training session, gave their all during the year and then on match day and especially when the team got to Croke Park that sorry you can’t attend. I think some back room staff also had to be told the same. On an aside I would expect that this rule will also apply to the FAI Men’s and Women’s Cup finals but their squads would normally be a few less than those of an inter county football squad. But as I said the right decision was made and well done to the managers who spoke out so strongly to make this happen. KERRY IN CROKE PARK IN DECEMBER: 2020 will be remembered for many sad events and deaths of many good people due to Covid. But one of the positive things that has come from the year is a renewed acknowledgement of the importance of sport. And in Kerry the credit for lifting our spirits goes to the hurlers after the disappointing loss for the footballers. Not that it is a flash in the pan for the hurlers who have been making great strides in recent year and have been contesting the latter stages of Leagues and championships and winning some trophies. And this squad certainly deserve their day in Croke Park which is the dream for all GAA players. They were due to play their League final there, against the same opposition that they will face on December 13th, but COVID scuppered that. So for them to get back into the Joe McDonagh final is a credit to their skills and dedication. In case anyone thinks I am saying that they will be happy just to get there I certainly am not. They will be up against a good side in Antrim who have beaten Kerry in recent encounters. But in a final all past history is forgotten and it is all on the day. And it is a rare day that a team in the Green and Gold of Kerry does not put on a show on that hallowed turf. Now I am not going to preview that game in depth as I will say that the

closest I have come to hurling was listening to my late father telling me about the great players that came from Lixnaw and in recent years before he passed away who the recent crop of players were related to! But one thing for sure is that I and everyone in Kerry will be right behind the boys and the management on Sunday week. And while fans of hurling won’t be there in person the team will know they will be there in spirit.
Greyhound Stadium. On Friday night it’s the favourite of the Listowel Garden Machinery A3 Stakes and also on are the six first round heats of the Track Bookmakers Kingdom Derby with the first of 10 races off at 7pm. There is a ten race card on Saturday night starting with the 7pm race with the highlight being the final of the O’Keeffe Family of Barnagrane sponsored A4 Stakes while on Sunday its and 8 race program beginning at 6.38pm.
THINGS NOT AS POSITIVE FOR OTHER SPORTS: Those involved in sport tuned into An Taoiseach Michael Martin hoping for some good news that they could get back playing. Clubs and Leagues are always happy to implement the protocols that would allow them to return to playing games. From a soccer point of view there was good news for the teams in the National League as their games will continue to a conclusion of the season before Christmas. This weekend the 17’s are at home on Sunday at 1pm while the other three age groups are away. However it was very disappointing when it emerged that the local KSBGL and KDL Leagues could not resume even though the players are training in their groups. There are meetings on this going on between the FAI and the powers that be so we might have more news next week.
TRALEE BAY SWIMMING UPDATE: The Sunday Swims continue between 10am and 12 noon and now that the 5km restrictions have been lifted it is expected that more people will return to the water. However the clubs asked people to be aware that the water will be cold and of course never to swim alone and stay along by the shore within your depth. Due to Level 3 still being in place the Turkey Series cannot continue at the moment. The proceeds of the kitty have been donated to the Kerry Christmas Appeal. The club expects that when Level 2 comes in they will return with the Teas and Coffees and kitty and draws for the Easter Series. There will be some more Introduction to Winter Swimming courses over the next few weeks with details in the clubs social media pages. Autism in Sport On-Line Workshop: Cara – the organisation for inclusion in sport – is hosting an on-line Autism in Sport workshop on Tuesday December 8th starting at 7.30pm and costing e15. To register log onto: www.eventbrite.ie/ autism-in-sportonline.
It is hoped that soccer and local GAA action will resume in early January. One sector that has really been hit is the indoor one. And from a basketball point of view there was deep disappointment and frustration when Basketball Ireland cancelled the Men’s Leagues. These teams of which Kerry had four ready to go – Garvey’s Tralee Warriors, Keanes Supervalu Killorglin, Scotts Lakers St Paul’s Killarney and newcomers Killarney Cougars – and had done a lot of their preseason work before thing were postponed. They have also sent home their imported player. But there was the hope until this week that the season could commence in January but that will not happen in the Leagues. John Dowling who is the new Head Coach of the Warriors told me that “it is very disappointing as we are one of the only countries in Europe that are not playing basketball at this level. The Association and the Government must take ownership of setting the sport back years and who knows the damage it will have caused but only time will tell. “ Basketball Ireland have not cancelled their Cups yet which are their major competitions from the public’s point of view with television coverage for the finals. However it is hard to see how a club could come back for just a knockout competition so we will have to wait and see what happens in the New Year. THREE NIGHTS RACING AT THE TRACK: There will be action on the three nights of this weekend at the Kingdom
AUSTIN STACKS NOTES: In the Senior side of the club the Executive have backed the reappointment of Wayne Quillinan and his backroom team of Jonathan Conway, Eoin Colgan, Damien Ryall, John O’Sullivan and Tommy Naughton for the 2021 season. They will be joined by former Senior player and 2014 County Championship winner Mikey Collins. The B team management will be confirmed in the due course. Tickets are available from the usual sources. In the most recent draw there was no winner from the numbers drawn 6,8,14 and 25 and the next draw for e3400 will take place this Sunday night in the Clubhouse. The clubs AGM will take place next Thursday night December 10th at 8pm on-line. All members will have been sent full details. There will be room for 6 people maximum in the clubhouse who need on-line assistance. BALLYMAC NEWS: The AGM will take place in January 3 with the format depending on the Government on that weekend. The plan is for it to take place as normal starting at 2pm on January 3rd but if this is not possible it will move on-line the following Sunday also at 2pm. Club members will be advised of the details prior to the meeting. In the Play Ball Lotto the numbers drawn were 25,26,28 and 2 and there was no winner of the Jackpot of e1020. The following week’s jackpot was e1040. SCOR UPDATE: Regrettably it has been decided to postpone the recommencement of Scór Sinsear until the start of February 2021 at the earliest. This is due to COVID19 and the restrictions that are in place or may be in place in the future months. No decision on the running of any future competitions at Scór na nÓg or Scór Sinsir will be made before February 2021. KERINS O’RAHILLYS NEWS: Well done to John Aherne from the u8 boys who was the winner of the Late Late Toy Show goodie boxes from Sugar Shack. The Juvenile Academy is going to kickstart the countdown to Christmas with a small Christmas treat. There will be names drawn daily from December 1st to December 24th to see who wins something from our Advent calendar. Every girl and boy in our academy will be entered in a daily draw in the lead up to Christmas. The club thanks Kathy who will be stepping down as Juvenile Secretary and moving to take up the role of Coiste Na nOg Secretary in the New Year. Claire Walsh is the incoming Secretary and everyone wishes her well. Lotto – there was no winner of the Lotto from the numbers drawn 6,13,17 and 29 with the next jackpot being e5,800.

IN MEMORIAM... TOM ROSS R.I.P Lovely words written on social media about the late Tom Ross who passed away last weekend . (Credited to ‘Historical Tralee and surrounding areas’ Facebook page )
“One of the nicest men I have known . Died yesterday doing what he loved . They say you live by the sword you die by the sword . Well Tom being Tom did it in his own way . A workaholic to the very end . I remember Tom working up to the last possible moment .even on days of family weddings . When most people were having pre service pints .he would be still at work trying to get that last bit of work in . And would rush to the church after a shower change of clothes and a beard brush . Arriving with dirty nails and wet but brushed beard and hair .I had the pleasure of knowing Tom most of my life . As I grew up with his sons and daughters . Tough but fair .always donned with his cut down Levi’s jacket, t shirt and tracksuit pants . Ahead of the trend by years only man I knew who would take a Stanley knife to a brand new denim jacket and cut the sleeves off ...A true gentle giant .many an old building was saved by Tom and his crew ...... Little did I know when I saluted him friday night . It would be the last time I would see him As I write this piece , Tom is probably already chatting with St Peter pricing up a refurb job on the Pearly Gates . ... Rest in peace Tom you will be missed ..but remembered from the legacy of buildings you were responsible for .

Say this prayer three times for three days and your favour will be granted. Never known to fail. Must promise publication of prayer. T.S.
