The Ashe Street Clinic, Tralee

Medical Matters HAVE A HEALTHY CHRISTMAS DR KATE VERNON Christmas is a time of indulgence and excess for many of us, particularly when it comes to food and alcohol. Now before you yell “Bah Humbug!” I’m not insisting a sober holiday for everyone. Rather, we encourage you to drink responsibly. But what does this mean?

Leave your car keys at home; there’s no safe level of drink driving. You should allow at least one hour per standard drink for the alcohol to clear from your system. That means after finishing 3 pints you should wait 6 hours before getting behind the wheel. Remember, all the coffee in the world won’t sober you up any faster.

It’s currently recommended that men drink no more than 17 standard drinks and women no more than 11 standard drinks spread out over a week, with at least 2 alcohol free days per week. One standard drink is equal to half a pint of beer OR a single measure of spirits (35.5 ml) OR a small glass of wine (100ml).

If you happen to drink a few too many, keep off alcohol for the next 4-5 days to allow your body recover. Just be mindful of your limit the next time you drink.

Nobody wants to spend the holidays nursing a hangover. Alternate each alcoholic drink with a glass of water. Don’t “top up” your glass – finish your drink before pouring another. For every pint you drink, you’d need to go for an hour-long walk to burn off the calories!

Christmas can be a difficult time for those struggling with alcohol addiction, and it’s important to bear that in mind when planning events this season. Have some non-alcoholic beverages available. The HSE has a useful website www.askaboutalcohol.ie, that includes information about support available during the Christmas period. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from all of us at The Ashe Street Clinic.

Kerry Schools and IT Tralee Secure VR Funding A number of primary schools in Kerry in collaboration with IT Tralee have secured funding under the Department of Education and Skills’ School Excellence Fund, to implement an innovative virtual reality teaching programme. The funding, designed to support innovative projects in teaching and learning using digital technologies, will see the purchase 60 virtual reality headsets for use in the development and implementation of a teaching tool for the Primary Language Curriculum – English and Irish – through an enhanced learning environment utilising virtual reality and augmented reality (VR/AR) tools. Other subject areas such as History, Geography, Science and the Arts, will also be investigated over the course of the study. The four participating schools are Ardfert National School, Abbeydorney National School, Tralee Educate Together National School and Scoil Mhuire de Lourdes, Lixnaw. The project uses VR enabled low-cost digital devices for the creation of a virtual, highly engaging collective learning environment for each student in a class that can be controlled by the teacher. Bridge Place Dental Practice - Nominated for The Most Caring Dentist in Ireland Three dentists from Bridge Place Dental Practice were nominated for “The Colgate Caring Dentist Awards”. The awards were held at The Clayton Hotel in Dublin on Saturday December 1st. Dr Colm O’ Loghlen, Dr Susan Van Der Merwe and Dr Helena Casey were delighted to have received nominations for the prestigious award. Bridge Place Dental Practice was also nominated for the “Most Caring Dental Team”. These nominations were very special because it was the patients who made the nominations. Dr Colm O’ Loghlen said “We really are overwhelmed by the amount of nominations we received. It is very humbling to hear all the kind words and we are extremely grateful to all our patients who took the time to nominate us”. Located in the heart of Tralee, Bridge Place Dental Practice has been revolutionising the way in which dental treatment is provided since 2006. Principal dentist Dr Colm

O’Loghlen has treated over 600 Invisalign patients. His experience has awarded him Diamond Elite Status as an Invisalign Provider. This translates to Colm being recognised as one of the top Invisalign Practitioners in Europe. Invisalign is the clear alternative to metal braces. It is the most invisible way to straighten teeth. Colm is also an experienced implantologist. A dental implant is an artificial tooth root that is placed into your jaw to hold a replacement tooth or bridge. Dental implants may be an option for people who have lost a tooth or are missing all their teeth. Dentistry is in Colm’s DNA. Colm’s father Colm O’Loghlen Snr practiced dentistry for 40 years in Tralee before retiring nearly three years ago. After studying his undergraduate in UCC Colm then completed his postgraduate training in the UK. This is where he met his wife Jane who is Practice Manager at Bridge Place Dental Practice. Bridge Place

Dental is a team of 16 which includes five dentists, one trainee dentist and two dental hygienists. The Practice is spread over 3 floors, there are 4 state of the art spacious dental surgeries, a hygiene surgery, an Invisalign suite and a treatment co-ordinator suite. Colm invests heavily in the most advanced technologies. Bridge Place Dental Practice is one of only three dental practices in Ireland who provide treatment using

a dental laser. Colm has a Master’s Degree in Restorative Dentistry, his passion is implantology and he is qualified to administer IV sedation for those who have a fear of the dentist or to make complex procedures more comfortable for patients. Colm does a regular slot on Radio Kerry “Ask the Dentist” with Deirdre Walsh. His most recent slot was last Monday( Dec 17th) at 2pm

Back to the 80’s at The Rose Hotel Dig out those shoulder pads and leg warmers and get set to hit the dancefloor 80’s style at The Rose Hotel on Friday 25th January 2019 with the Back to the 80’s disco in aid of Kerry

Cork Health Link Bus. The Lee Suite at The Rose Hotel will be transformed for one night only into an 80’s disco with DJ Niall “Botty” O’Callaghan spinning the classics from 10pm until late with a curry supper served to guests to keep the nostalgia going. 80’s dress is encouraged but not required but there will be a prize for best dressed! All proceeds from the night will go to the very worthy Kerry Cork Health Link Bus and the Kerry Cancer Support Group. Kerry Cancer Support Group is a community-based, volunteer-driven, communitysupported organisation. Their signature service the “Kerry Cork Health Link Bus” came to fruition in 2010 and started with a 14 seater minibus and as demand quickly grew so did the bus. They now have a 30 seater bus which travels to Cork University Hospital, The Mercy, The Bons Cork and The Cork Clinic 5 days

They also have a “Bridging Transport Service” which provides transport to treatment for service users on a one-off basis where no other service meets their needs. Tickets are €20pp or make a night of it and enjoy an overnight stay for €70pps including breakfast and tickets to the disco. This Year (and next!), Shop Local, Spend Local, it really makes such a difference! Lets go back 6 years, say its 2012... I want to tell you what wasn’t around and when I say wasn’t around, I mean there were gaps, as in nothing there, or very little. We were firmly in the grips of a bitter recession . There was no Rose Hotel, Benners Hotel, no Quinlans fish, No Costa, No Brogue, no Roasthouse, No Ashe Hotel, No Chamber Alliance, No Sports Direct No JRI America, no Celsius, no Dish, no revamped Pennys, no Dominos, No Bathrooms4u, No Munster Robes, No Homestore , only 1 Aldi, 1 Lidl, No Lana, No Jack Macs ...the list could go on if I had more time . Who would have thought, back then, where we would be now . Tralee has bounced back, grown, matured, again in the last few years .Best ever and biggest Rose Of Tralee last year and heading into its 60th Anniversary Year, Overall Winner of Enterprise Town in the whole of Ireland, Purple flag awards, An ITT on the cusp of University status, our youth finally beginning to be attracted back home. The reason I say “again “ is because Tralee , like the rest of Ireland has seen adversity, albeit in different guises before.

As the famous quote from Ghandi reads “Adversity is the mother of progress”. Tralee as a town and society has bounced back, through its business growth , through its achievements , through its endeavours, every day week and month, by its people . Don’t get us wrong, there is still plenty more to do, still daily and weekly challenges ,but take a moment to look back and see where we have come from! And take a little satisfaction in knowing that you have been part of these changes. Todays voiced concerns seem a million miles away from way back , but yet only, 6 years ago. Yes we have challenges now, what to do with the island of Geese? Is the Mall working out? Why are certain parts of retail still fragile? The constant looming of the Online threat , The overexpansion of certain industry sectors , remember you cant buy a cup of coffee or get your hair done online! Can we attract business away from the more densely populated areas of Ireland ? Even Brexit! But I call this ‘Positive Stress ‘... Id take it any day of the week, when compared to the alternative. And we have grown too!

The Tralee Advertiser is an important element in the fabric of everyday life in Tralee. We report, we support , we promote, we encourage... and why ?Its all for the betterment of Tralee as a place to live and work. We now publish with pride, a bigger and we hope, better , weekly magazine, and report “Whats happening in Tralee “ as our tag line says ! This little publication(now 25 years old ) would in no way exist without you, its readers who demand to read it each week nor without our Advertisers who ensure that we can bring this magazine to you FREE every week. At this time of year , as throughout the year , we urge you sincerely to support them, our local business, , to buy local , because thats where a lot of our livelihoods come from .... the local economy .If it does well, we all do well ! A big thank you to our contributors, who help keep us fresh , current and topical ,the guys from Ashe st Clinic , Rebecca in BexBlah beauty & Fitness, Miriams Legal Corner, Billy from HRI in Tech Corner, Frances in Citizens information ,Ken Aidan and David, in Tralee Chamber Alliance, Our wonderChef Noel,

Our backroom team , The Keanes & Co at Kingdom Printers and Rafal, our excellent creative hardworking graphic designer from Expose Design, who both ensure we deliver an excellent publication EVERY week! And to everybody else who send us in photos , articles , poems , stories and so much more , a big thank you . Keep doing it...we really do appreciate it. We are looking forward to a little break now ....50 issues back to back and still here ! We start all over again on January 11th with our first issue of 2019 . We are delighted to see our Digital Edition of the Tralee Advertiser grow so well in the last two years . This addition to the Advertiser gives everybody the ability to read, on their smartphone or Tablet/iPad , any where in the world , the most recent edition of The Tralee Advertiser and see “Whats really happening in Tralee !”

Tralee & Blennerville properties in Kerry top 5 sales of 2018 developments include Parklands on Pierse Road in Tralee, which sold for €1.9 million in February.

The sale of Bayhouse in Feoramore, Kenmare is the largest one-off property transaction recorded in Kerry so far this year. Data from the Property Price Register, analysed by property website MyHome.ie, shows that the majestic waterfront property with views over Kenmare Bay and the Ring of Kerry sold for €725,000 in August. There are only five transactions with a higher value so far this year, including four for seven figure sums, but all are

Other large one-off sales included Beau Fort in Curragraigue, Blennerville, which sold for €638,500 in June, Ashbury Lodge on the Sneem Road in Kenmare for €595,000 in September, St Joseph’s in Woodville in Dingle, which sold for €575,000 in May and The Reeks, Gortacollopa in Fossa, which sold for €550,000 in August. As of the Property Price

Register update of November 28th, just over €223.3 million had been spent on property so far this year in Kerry. There were 1,344 sales recorded as of that date, which still has some way to go to surpass the total number of 1,638 transactions recorded in the county in 2017. The Managing Director of MyHome.ie, Angela Keegan said uncertainty over the outcome of Brexit negotiations was impacting the market, especially at the upper end. “That uncertainty is hitting the upper end more I think while the impact of the tightening of the Central Bank lending rules and an increase in stock means house price inflation

generally, is slowing around the country. In Q1 asking prices nationally were up 9.5%. By the end of Q3 the rate of inflation had slowed to 5.9% year on year.” “Double or high single digit inflation is not sustainable so the current trend is positive for the property market as a whole.” “I think 2018 will be remembered as the year when the stock of both new builds and second-hand homes turned the corner. Secondhand stock nationally is up 6% while the number of new home schemes continues to rise” she said.

The proposed abortion legislation is a farce!

The government plans to introduce a new GP led abortion service next January. However, there is no provision for the introduction of a free universal contraceptive service in Ireland. This is a classic case of putting the cart before the horse. Surely, at least as much effort and money should be put into preventing unwanted pregnancies by a free comprehensive family planning education campaign and free contraception to all women especially the newer safer more effective long acting reversible contraceptives (the IUDs and the implants) GPs are to be paid €450 for 3 visits to terminate a pregnancy. However, GPs receive €250 to provide comprehensive antenatal and postnatal care for a pregnant woman and her newborn which can involve approximately 8 visits to the GP’s surgery. This highlights the chronic under funding of antenatal care in Ireland. It can’t be right that a doctor gets paid almost twice as much to terminate a pregnancy than to support it. Our health minister, Simon Harris, needs to seriously review these issues before rushing through this new legislation. Dr David Buckley, Dr Karen Soffe, Dr Kevin Ryle. Dr Kate Vernon. Cabinet approves publication of General Scheme of Bill to Provide for Graduated Speeding Penalties The Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport, Mr Shane Ross TD, has welcomed the decision of the Government earlier today to approve his proposal for formal drafting of the General Scheme of a Road Traffic (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill 2018 and simultaneously for the consideration of certain proposals by a cabinet subcommittee. Bringing us in line with a majority of other EU countries the Bill will introduce graduated speeding penalties into Ireland for the first time and has already generated much debate and interest. Current legislation treats speeding as a single offence, no matter how much over the speed limit a person is driving. The new Bill will mean that penalties for speeding will be divided according to bands, with increased penalties the higher the band. This parallels the way in which drink driving is treated, with increased penalties determined by bands over the limit and more serious offenders receiving more serious penalties. 28

TRALEE ADVERTISER

Simultaneously, Minister Ross has written to Local Authorities urging them to complete the review of speed limits in their respective areas. Speaking after the meeting of Government today, Minister Ross said: ‘Speed is a killer. It is recognised as the single greatest risk factor on our roads. It is highly dangerous and irresponsible. Speed limits are there for a reason, which is the safety of all road users. We would all like to think that drivers who are speeding would realise the danger they pose to themselves and others, and act more responsibly. Unfortunately, too many do not. I think it is time we focused particularly on the penalties for speeding, and made sure that those penalties increase according to how much people exceed the speed limit. The more people exceed the speed limit, the greater the danger. This proposal has caused debate both with the wider community and amongst my government colleagues. I

Thursday 20th December 2018

welcome their support on our mission to make our roads safer. I also am aware that the concerns of the driving community must be listened to. For that reason, I happily suggested that the penalties in each band will be considered at a cabinet sub-committee in the coming weeks to ensure they are proportionate and will have the intended resultcause people to reduce their speed and make our roads safer for all. I am also eager to ensure that the new ‘Clancy

provisions’ which are due to be commenced this week, will be fully enforceable. For that reason, the cabinet sub-committee will consider ways to ensure that An Garda Síochána can easily confirm the licensing status of all drivers, either by removing their discretion for the driver to produce the license later, or by any other appropriate means. As we approach the holiday season, with the many dangers it presents on our roads, I would urge all road users to observe the speed limits wherever they are, and to put safety first.”

Bexblah Beauty HELLO BEAUTIFUL PEOPLE! HOW ON EARTH IS THIS MY LAST PAGE OF 2018? WHAT. 2018 has absolutely flew.

Last week I did my ‘Best of Beauty 2018’ which in hindsight wasn’t my best idea, as I should have left that for this week. But alas, here we are. So this week I’m going to talk about… well… ah I know! Last minute budget makeup buys, as I assume if you’re reading this it’s (hopefully) still before Christmas, and maybe you’re stuck for a last minute present/stocking filler. Blank Canvas Brush Cleaner - The perfect gift for anyone really, because we should ALL be washing our makeup brushes regularly. You have no idea how much bacteria they harbour. Anyway, I would appreciate this soooo much as a present, because sometimes a blush cleaner is the kind of thing that someone wouldn’t buy themselves.

The Body Shop Body Butters - These are a great gift/stocking filler because I mean who doesn’t want soft fab smelling skin at Christmas? (Coconut & Vanilla scents are my fave)

Voucher - I would 100000% recommend getting a beauty voucher. I know some people say vouchers are a ‘lazy present’ BUT, I don’t think that. If you know the person loves makeup, but you don’t exactly know what he/she would want. You can Eyelashes/Glue - ’Tis the season to be glam go onto almost every beauty website, eg. falalalalalalalalalaaaa. I mean, if you know Beautybay, Cult Beauty, Morphe, Anastasia the person you’re buying for wears fake Beverly Hills, Brown Thomas, Debenhams, lashes, then a pair (or 4) is a great gift! I would CH Tralee, Boots, Sam Macauley… you get recommend the Ardell Wispies, or the SoSu X what I mean, and get a voucher. That way Keilidh lashes. You could also buy them a fresh the person you’re buying for knows you Duo glue because I mean, can a gal ever have know what they like but not exactly yano? enough? And they can get something they really want/need.

Benefit Gift Sets - I’ve seen a few of these and not only is the packaging/presentation amaaaaazing, they’re absolutely insane value! They have all different sets, (the brow one looks amazing) and I think they’re perfect for any makeup lover.

Tan - Again, if you know the person you’re buying for wears tan (especially if you know the brand) then this is a great last minute present (add a fresh mitt for brownie points!). It can be kind of tough buying tan for someone if you don’t know what tan they wear so maybe hold off if you’re not sure, as different tans work well for different people.

(Daily from 1pm, onstreet & Public Car Parks)

HELLO STRONG PEOPLE, I HOPE YOU’RE ALL HAVING A GREAT WEEK! How is 2018 over? What’s going on? Who knows. As this is my final page of 2018, I thought I’d just give everyone some real talk. THIS WEEK WILL NOT MAKE YOU FAT/SKINNY/RIPPED/ SHREDDED/TONED/ANYTHING. Christmas week is ONE, I repeat… one week out of the year. Not even 2% of the year. You know what that means? Stressing over what you eat/don’t eat, your workout, your lack of working out, alcohol is not worth it. So many people put themselves under huge pressure at this time of year. For what? You’re not going to look back in 10 years and remember your body or how you felt, you’ll remember the memories, laughs and time spent with loved ones. I know some people struggle a lot with themselves, they feel guilty after having ‘bad’ food. This is something I cannot fix, but all I can say is… If you have ever felt proper guilty for eating somethig, and it has affected you for more than 5 minutes, that’s not a healthy relationship with food. No matter how ‘healthy’ or ‘clean’ you eat, if you don’t have a good relationship with food, that’s UNHEALTHY. And also, if anyone offers an opinion on the way you choose to fuel your body - try to take it with a pinch of salt. (Unless they’re worried about something that could be potentially damaging your health obviously). Today, a lot of people like to boast about their newest fad diet, be it low carb, keto, intermittent fasting, slimming world, weight watchers or whatever else. It can all get a bit overwhelming for some people and you can feel lost. I have some advice: 1. If you’re following a meal plan/diet/calorie counting or whatever it may be and it’s working for you, amazing. Well done. But try not to push what you’re doing onto other people. Not everything works for everyone. 2. Try not to use body related compliments like ‘oh my god you look amazing have you lost weight’, while you may have good intentions, you don’t know what led to that person losing weight, it might not be positive. Try something like ‘I love your outfit/hair/ whatever else’ What I’m really trying to say is, Christmas is a time that should be about family, friends and enjoying being together. Focus on that and you’ll be good!

CHRISTMAS RECIPES Having a crowd over? Party maybe? This is a pure comfort dish , simple to make and great for a crowd !....with some tasty roast beetroot, pork shoulder is packed full of flavour and will go down a treat with your guests over the festive season !

Slow-roasted shoulder of pork Serves 6 INGREDIENTS • • •

• • • •

4-5 garlic cloves, peeled 2 red chillies shoulder of pork, also called the blade, about 2¾ -3kg/6lb-6lb 8oz, on the bone with the skin on and scored (ask the butcher to do this for you) juice 5 lemons 3 tbsp olive oil 300ml chicken stock large bunch oregano, leaves picked

METHOD Heat oven to 230C Using a mortar and pestle, smash the garlic with the chilli and some salt and pepper. Stab holes all over the flesh side of the meat, then rub the chilli mixture into the flesh, pushing it into the holes and any gaps between the muscles. Place the shoulder on a rack in a roasting tin, then roast for 30 mins or until the skin begins to crackle up, blister and brown. Pour over half the lemon juice and 2 tbsp of the oil. Reduce the heat to 180C, then leave the meat to roast for about 2 hrs. The shoulder is ready when it is completely soft under the crisp skin. You can tell by prodding it with a roasting fork – the meat should be tender and give way. Set the meat aside to rest. While the meat rests, make the gravy. Tip all the fat out of the roasting tin, then place the tin over a low flame. Tip in the rest of the lemon juice, then sizzle, scraping any sticky bits off the bottom with a wooden spoon. Pour in the stock, then bring everything to the boil. Strain the gravy through a sieve into a small saucepan, add the oregano leaves, then simmer for a moment. Serve each person some of the crisp skin and meat cut from different parts of the shoulder. Serve with the side dishes, see recipes below, and some buttered new potatoes.

Let me know if you enjoyed them and we will continue our healthy eating next week and remember to send your quetions to: askchefnoel@hotmail.com

Answer In general, when goods are imported into Ireland from a country outside of the EU, they are liable for import charges. These include VAT, customs duty and excise or other duties where relevant. You are importing goods if you buy items online from abroad or from a mail order catalogue. You are also importing goods if you get a gift sent from abroad. In some cases, you can get relief from import charges. If someone sends you a gift from outside the EU, and it is valued less than €45, you do not have to pay customs duty or VAT. To qualify for this relief, the gift must be of an occasional nature and sent from one private individual to another. You don’t have to pay VAT on certain goods from outside the EU if they are valued less than €22. The value is calculated as the full value of the item, plus postage and duties. This is also the value that is used to calculate VAT, if it is payable. If you buy goods from outside the EU valued at more than €150, you will have to pay customs duty as well. Customs duty is normally calculated as a percentage of the full value of the goods including the cost of postage, packaging and insurance. VAT, customs duty and excise duty are always charged on excisable products (such as alcohol, tobacco and perfume) from outside the EU, whatever their value. All packages received from outside of the EU require a customs declaration, which is usually completed by the sender. The declaration should include a description of the goods, the value of the goods and whether they are gifts or commercial items. Some websites offer to undervalue your goods to avoid import charges. This is illegal. You, as the importer of the goods, are responsible for ensuring that the information provided is accurate and that all duties and taxes are paid. Some websites may also promise delivery from within the EU, which would eliminate any import charges, but they are in fact shipping their products from outside the EU. If this is the case, you are liable for duties and VAT

LAUGHTER ....THE BEST MEDICINE ! A MAN WALKS INTO A BAR WITH A LABRADOR

He makes his way to the bar and orders a drink. “I’m sorry, but we don’t allow dogs in here,” says the bartender. “That’s my seeing-eye dog,” the man replies. The bartender’s face instantly drops, knowing he made himself out to be a complete eejit . “Oh God. I’m sorry. Here — your first two are on me.” He hands the man two bottles of beer. “Thank you, I appreciate that.” The man and his dog make their way to a table near the front door and he grabs a seat. A little while later, another man enters the bar with a chihuahua. The first man stops him: “The bartender is going to give you crap about your dog. Tell him it’s your seeing-eye dog and he’ll feel so bad that he’ll buy your first few rounds!” “Thanks!” replies the second man. He wanders up to the bar and orders a beer. “I’m sorry, sir. We don’t allow dogs in here.” “It’s my seeing-eye dog.” The barender’s face wrinkles into confusion. He says, “Ehhh, I don’t think so. They don’t make seeing-eye dogs out of chihuahuas.” “Ah Heck ! They gave me a chihuahua????

TEACHER : WHY DIDN’T YOU COME TO THE SCHOOL YESTERDAY? Student : My dad is in the hospital 1 week later.. Teacher : Is your dad still in the hospital? Student : Yes, he is a doctor.

I TOLD MY WIFE SHE WAS DRAWING HER EYEBROWS TOO HIGH. She looked surprised.

I WAS AT THE DELI COUNTER BEHIND ANOTHER DAD AND HIS SON THE OTHER DAY.

I was at the deli counter behind another dad and his son the other day. He has his hands full - the kid was screaming for candy, cookies... all sorts of things. The dad kept saying in a controlled voice: “Easy, William, this won’t take long. Just chill out.” He had another outburst in the cereal aisle and his dad just said “Settle down, William. Just a couple more minutes and we’ll be out of here. Hang in there, buddy.” At the checkout, I see him in the next lane over and the kid is throwing items out of the cart. His Dad says again, super-calmly, “William… William, relax! Don’t get upset. We’ll be home in ten minutes. Just stay cool, William.” It was impressive. So, as we’re both walking out of the store I turned to him and said “I’m sure it’s none of my business, but you were amazing back there. I don’t know how you kept your composure. I might have snapped if my son was in that kind of mood. William is very lucky to have you as his dad!” And he said “Thanks! But actually, I’m William. This little brats name is Collin.”

DONALD TRUMP, BARACK OBAMA, AND BILL CLINTON DIE AND GO TO MEET SATAN

They are lined up in front of three doors. The first is opened to reveal a swarm of wasps and mosquitoes. Satan’s voice booms “Mr Obama you have sinned, and now you must spend all of eternity with these vile creations!” And with that, Obama is thrown into the room and the door slams shut. Clinton and Trump are now terrified. The second door opens, and it reveals a room filled with angry rabid dogs and badgers. Satan’s voice booms again “Mr Clinton you have sinned, and now you must spend all of eternity with these ghastly beasts!” And with that, Clinton is thrown into the room and the door slams shut. Trump is now wetting himself. The final door opens, but instead of there being anything horrific, Trump sees the most drop-dead gorgeous young woman he has ever laid eyes on, with perfect skin, a stunning face, and thick flowing hair. Satan’s voice booms one final time “Mrs Smith you have sinned…”

TORQUING CARS! HOW AND WHY E-TRON FROM AUDI IS BIG GAME-CHANGER

The irony of testing Audi’s first electric car in oil-rich Abu Dhabi wasn’t lost on us, with the launch venue seeming like a statement of intent. The e-tron is a fully fledged SUV that just happens to take power from a battery and, although it looks like a slightly smaller Q7, it’s purpose-built from the ground up. Based on Audi’s MEB platform, the e-tron’s battery forms the floor of the car, keeping its centre of gravity as low as possible. The 95kWh battery makes up 700kg of the car’s not inconsiderable 2,500kg weight, but that’s enough capacity to give a range of 400km-plus. All those amps feed two motors, mounted front and rear, which produce 300kW and 664Nm of torque. That’s enough to take the car to 100kmh in 5.7 seconds and to a limited top speed of 200kmh. Fast charging, up to 150kW DC, is supported - an 80pc charge is possible in around half an hour. These chargers aren’t in Ireland yet, but Audi plans to introduce them, along with a single account allowing a multitude of charging solutions. By mid-2019, the plan is that no smart cards will be necessary - the car will self-authorise. It even has a towing capacity of 1,800kg. Having two motors means quattro four-wheel drive, although for efficiency reasons in normal conditions most power is sent to the rear motor. Careful aerodynamics also help increase range, but to get the best 0.27 figure, you have to specify cameras instead of door mirrors. These transmit an image onto screens at the top of the doors, but I couldn’t get on with them. They’re smaller than a conventional mirror, less bright, in the wrong position and only contribute 2km to the total range. As for the rest, the interior is well up to Audi’s standard, with the virtual cockpit fitted from the get go. I’d like to see more details provided on energy usage and recuperation, but that’s about it. Luggage space is 600 litres and there’s a further 60 under the bonnet taken up with charging leads and puncture kit. The SUV won’t be cheap. Prices start at €101,750 (excluding govt grants). The new 992-generation Porsche 911 Cabriolet has been spotted testing once again ahead of its official reveal in 2019 Hot on the heels of the public debut of the new Porsche 911 at the Los Angeles Motor Show in November, we’ve had our clearest look yet at the new 911 Cabriolet undergoing testing before its official release. The testing mule is almost completely undisguised and, unsurprisingly, it shows that the overall design very closely resembles that of the hard top variant. That means the new model will feature a cleaner front end with LED matrix headlamps and wider air dams, while around the back there’s a lower mounting point for the number plate and a full width LED strip to emphasise the cars broader body. It looks as though little has changed with regards to the electric fabric roof, which, like on the previous generation 991 models, should continue to fold flush in under 20 seconds. The wider body has allowed Porsche to increase the track by 45mm, which should make even the standard 911 Cabriolet feel more stable and grippy than before. Power will come from a 3.0-litre twin turbocharged flat six which, in standard spec will produce around 420bhp. The Carrera S is more potent still, with 444bhp and 550nm of torque. As this new 911 Cabriolet was snapped on the move, we’ve not been granted a look inside. However, we expect it to almost completely mimic the revised Coupe. That means a 10.9-inch central touchscreen with a simplified centre console and fewer buttons, as well as digital dials flanking a large analogue rev counter. Prices of the Carrera S Coupe will start from £93,100, with the entry-level model still to be confirmed. Based on the £8,850 price hike for Cabriolet models in the previous 991 guise, expect the latest Carrera S Cabriolet to be priced at around £102,000. (Auto Express UK) 48

TORQUING CARS! UK’S RAREST CARS: 1979 HONDA ACCORD SALOON MK1, ONE OF ONLY SIX REMAINING

In the 1970s, the average Japanese medium-sized saloon combined “traditional” rearwheel-drive engineering with agreeably ornate styling and a list of fittings beyond the dreams of the average Avenger driver. Then in 1977 Honda unveiled the Accord saloon, which made the contemporary Cortina Mk4 look middle-aged, the Morris Marina appear antediluvian and the Chrysler Hunter seem as up-to-the-minute as a Manfred Mann LP (ie not very). Car magazine mused that the Accord saloon “just eats the established business/family cars and many an ambitious sales rep began to plot their route towards a front-wheel-drive company car with a rev-happy SOHC engine and five-speed gearbox. One drawback was that the Honda might have been a fourrather than a five-seater, but the boot was large enough for any number of samples cases. The first-generation Accord ceased production in 1981 and while the brand is now on its 10th incarnation Karl Sheridan’s example, resplendent in San Remo Green Metallic paint, is one of a mere handful of Mk1s believed to be still running. Sheridan says: “I guess there are around six or so saloons in the UK, but not all are on the road, and 10 or so of the coupé version. The saying is that the engines go on and on, but the bodywork tends to disintegrate.”He has owned his saloon for “three to four years, and there are only 32,000 miles on the clock. When you are sat behind the wheel, the Honda feels a like a substantial car, until you park alongside a modern Kia, that is”. The brochures claimed that the Accord “fulfils the classic European tradition of positive response and performance” and Sheridan finds it “brilliant to drive, although the lack of power steering means that your arms do ache at times”.One typical reaction from members of the public to the Honda is “confusing it with an Acclaim”, which is understandable given that the Triumph was essentially a re-badged Ballade, the Accord’s smaller stablemate. Today, Sheridan’s car is not merely exclusive; it is also a reminder of a time when private and fleet buyers were starting to consider vehicles on merit, rather than convention.

BLOODHOUND SSC’S 1,000MPH LAND-SPEED RECORD ATTEMPT SAVED

A private investor has bought the Bloodhound SSC programme, following its recent financial collapse Yorkshire-based entrepreneur Ian Warhurst, managing director of the Barnsley engineering firm Melett, has bought the Bloodhound SSC programme, saving the 1,000mph land-speed record attempt from failure. Earlier this month, Project Bloodhound collapsed. It entered into voluntary administration in October 2018 after it failed to attract new investors and, after two months of struggle, was set to enter dissolution in early December 2018. Despite sponsorships from Rolls-Royce and Rolex, an additional £25 million was required to complete the project, which would have been used to push the jetpowered vehicle through its final stages of development.Project Bloodhound was beginning the sale of its assets and the return of its third-party equipment when Ian Warhurst stepped in. With backing from the Ministry of Defence and Rolls-Royce, he purchased the company for an “undisclosed amount” and is set to outline his plans for the programme in the New Year. Before its collapse, Project Bloodhound was aiming to break the current land-speed record of 763mph, set 20 years ago by Andy Green in the supersonic Thrust SSC. Early tests at Cornwall Airport saw the Bloodhound vehicle easily reach 200mph. We’re now hoping that Ian Warhurst adheres to the Bloodhound Project’s previously set goals, performing trials at 500mph and 800mph over the coming months, before finally attempting its top speed of 1,000mph in either 2020 or 2021. Future tests and top speed attempts for Project Bloodhound will take place on Hakskeen Pan in the Northern Cape of South Africa, where an 11-mile stretch of surface has been prepared.

It has been another very good year for Kerry sports across many disciplines on the field, track, road and court. Yes there was sadness as we lost too many sporting greats but we remember them and thank them for their contributions in their own spheres. And yes there were disappointments for some of our individuals and teams. But these disappointments make the success all the sweeter and there were lots of them. So looking forward to 2019 we wish every sports person, their family and friends every good wish on the sporting and life fronts. And we will see ye all back here with our first 2019 edition on January 11th.

Take it dear Heart of Jesus and place it within your Heart where your Father sees it, then in his merciful eyes it will become your favour not mine. Amen. Say this prayer three times for three days and your favour will be granted. Never known to fail. Must promise publication of prayer.

Beautiful Christmas Poems sent in by one of our readers Christmas Colours In village and town And church serene, The Christmas colours Are red and green. Red so warm and Cheerful and bright, Holly berries A lovely sight. The Christmas Tree Aroma of spice, Sheds her needles In a trice. Christmas come and Goes so fast Celebrations Do not last. Many people Not so blessed, Have nowhere To feast or rest. Make a difference Show you care, Then offer up A grateful prayer.

NOVENA TO ST. MARTHA O St. Martha, I resort to thee and to thy petition and faith, I offer up to thee this light which I should burn every Tuesday for nine Tuesdays. Comfort me in all my difficulties thro’the great favour thou didst enjoy when our Savour lodged in thy house.l beseech thee to have definite pity in regard to the favour I ask (mention favour). Intercede for my family that we may always be provided for in all our necessities. I ask thee St. Martha to over come the dragon which thou didst cast at thy feet. One Our Father and three Hail Mary’s and a lighted candle every Tuesday and the above prayer made known with the intentions of spreading devotions to St. Martha. This miraculous Saint grants everything before the Tuesdays are ended. No matter how difficult. B.S.

A SEASON OF KINDNESS Put a prawn on the baby Or a log on the fire, The December festival Is sure to inspire. Not just above religion Or faith of any kind. It goes much deeper And touches soul and mind. Christmas Eve holds magic The Shepherds were aware, As were the wise old men As at the stars they stare. A season of kindness Swapping cards and gifts. Touching friends and family Healing hurts and rifts Hang on to Christmas magic Don’t let it get away, The world really needs it Every live-long day Call Chris or Colette Tel: 066-7126399 or e-mail : traleeadvertiser@gmail.com
