Medical Matters HOW TO FIX A BROKEN HEART! ADVICE ON HOW TO PREVENT HEART ATTACKS AND STROKES BY DR DAVID BUCKLEY Because of the weekend that is in it, I thought we should discuss heart disease in Ireland. Heart disease (cardiovascular disease) remains the most common cause of death in Ireland. It is currently the cause of one-third of all deaths. Approximately 10,000 people die each year from cardiovascular disease – including coronary heart disease, stroke and heart failure.
Most heart attacks start with a crushing chest pain which can be mistaken as “heart burn” from too much stomach acid. The pain of a heart attack can be severe and may travel down the left arm or up to the jaw. The person is often distressed and sweaty. If you are worried that you or someone else is suffering from a heart attack call 999 or go straight to the accident and emergency department.
Coronary heart disease Coronary heart disease is the term that describes what happens when your heart's blood supply is blocked or interrupted by a build-up of fatty substances in the small arteries (coronary arteries) that feed the heart muscle. Over time, the walls of your arteries can become blocked with fatty deposits causing the blood supply to your heart to be restricted.
By making some simple lifestyle changes, you can reduce your risk of getting heart disease and strokes:
This can cause a temporary cramp in the heart muscle known as angina (chest pain that comes on with exercise and is relieved by rest). If a coronary artery becomes completely blocked, it can cause permanent damage to the heart muscle resulting in a heart attack. This is a medical emergency and can lead to death if not dealt with immediately.
• Maintain a healthy weight • Eat healthily with a diet low in animal fats and sugars. • Take more physical exercise (an hours strenuous exercise x 3 times/week) • Reduce salt in your diet • Do not smoke • Consume alcohol responsibly • Know your numbers ( weight/height analysis, blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol) For more advice contact your GP or practice nurse.

Tralee did itself proud last weekend as did the Kerry team! Here are just some of the Social media posts that our sports reporter Padraig Harnett came across after the great match in Austin Stack Park last weekend . Read Padraigs full sports roundup in this issues back pages ! ‘Not long back from Tralee and what a fantastic weekend it was despite the result. Two amazing teams playing attacking fluid football and playing the game the way it should be played and a great advertisement for Gaelic
football.’ ‘Tralee was rocking and there was entertaining good-natured banter with the good people of Kerry. With the way the Super 8’s is set up, we may not meet again until the All Ireland Final (should we both qualify) which is rather disappointing.’ ‘Kerry it was an absolute pleasure and thank-you once again for the warm welcome and reception in Tralee.’ And there was another post that it worth sharing. A gentleman
had a fall at the game and broke his hip. I am sure he is gone home by now but if not maybe he is reading this. His family posted to thank the nurses and staff of the University Hospital in Tralee for their kindness where they welcomed them with tea and toast. They also thanked Scotts Hotel in Killarney who gave them a room free of charge.
The post ended by saying that the family are so grateful for the kindness they received and cannot thank everyone enough. Enough Said!! Padraig Harnett

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... Is It Time For Tralee To ‘Twin’ With Another European Town? Funding Available For Short Term Town Twinning Projects In Kerry Towns all across Ireland should consider applying for funding for short-term Town Twinning projects. This is according to Ireland South MEP Deirdre Clune. Tralee is currently in the process of twinning with Beit Sahour near Bethlehem in Palestine . Town Twinning is hugely popular around Europe but towns around Ireland can also avail of funding for community and cultural organisations to engage in short-term town twinning projects. Under Europe for Citizens Town Twinning funding, a community or cultural group can apply for a small grant to help fund 25 or more European visitors to take part in a series of events in their locality, celebrating European culture, citizenship, solidarity and debate. Ireland South MEP Deirdre Clune said: “This is a great way for people all around
Ireland to forge connections at a European level and promote fantastic work that is going on all around the country. I would encourage towns and community groups to look at what opportunities there might be for them to take park in various projects associated with this funding and go for it. Europe is so diverse with so many various cultures and languages and this could be a great opportunity to show what we have to offer here in Ireland.”
and applicants that can apply are Local Authorities, Town Twinning committees or non-profit organisations representing local authorities.
The funding is available for local groups that carry out events fostering the appreciation of culture and history, active citizenship, debate, volunteering, and inclusion, including town twinning committees, local festivals, historical and cultural groups and volunteering initiatives.
The funding will contribute towards the travel costs of 25 plus people to participate in a series of events over at least three days. Events can include workshops, debates, public meetings, and cultural festivals, celebrations and exchanges, etc. The minimum grant you can apply for is €5000. The maximum is €25,000. The grant is based on how many European visitors travel to the host country. Applicants can chose to spend the money in any way they want, as long as it contributes towards their activities, but usually it ends up going towards the travel and/or accommodation costs of the visitors.
The types of organisations

Blowing the whistle on a family trauma, in Siamsa this weekend
Cormac Breatnach, the artist behind The Whistleblower, which made the cut of Hot Press’ Top 30 Folk Albums 2018, has launched the tour of his new concept album funded by the Arts Council. Released last year, The Whistleblower by Cormac Breatnach was made in response to a miscarriage of justice carried out against a member of his family, and how it shaped his adult life. “My brother Osgur was wrongfully arrested and tortured while in garda custody and forced to incriminate himself for a crime he did not commit”, Cormac explains. “The event in question was known as ‘The Sallins Mail Train Robbery’ or ‘the Sallins Frame-Up Case’, which later gained further notoriety as ‘The Nicky Kelly Case.’” Awarded a number of funding grants from the Arts Council, 12

Bexblah Beauty HELLO BEAUTIFUL PEOPLE! I HOPE YOU’RE ALL HAVING AN AMAZING WEEK! Recently Makeup by Mario help his famous Masterclass in LA, & he also recently did a video with James Charles! So I thought I’d write a little bit about my own experience with Mario last April with Keilidh Cashell & Cloud10 beauty! This week I’m going to talk about some top tips I learned from Mario including some of his must have products. •
He doesn’t use particular products on different skin types, he “manipulates the skin” to do what he wants - I know, I was shocked too. What I mean by that is, he uses the SAME moisturiser on EVERY CLIENT to prep the skin. Wanna know what moisturiser that is? The Kiehls Ultra Facial Cream. (I’m not gonna lie I was delighted it was a product I already use and love). Like Kiehls is not an insanely priced product, a jar of that moisturiser will set you back about €25.
•
He is obsessed with The Beauty Blender - A man after my own heart. If you follow me at all you know The Beauty Blender is one of my essential ride or die tools. I always use “The Original Beauty Blender”, no dupes. And you ALWAYS have to use it damp. Mario uses three different beauty blenders in his application, one for Foundation, one for Concealer & one for Powder.
•
He always finishes with a Setting Spray - Mario is a big fan of using powders such as the Laura Mercier Translucent & the Charlotte Tilbury Airbrush Flawless Finish Powder. He bakes and sets with both of them (using a damp Beauty Blender of course). He always uses a Setting Spray over the powders to get rid of that powdery finish on the skin.
Here’s a few products Mario used throughout the Masterclass… • Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Wiz • Laura Mercier Translucent Powder • Laura Mercier Flawless Fusion Concealer • The Original Beauty Blender • Charlotte Tilbury Airbrush Flawless Finish Powder • Makeup By Mario X KKW Eyeshadow Palette • Dermablend Concealers • Tom Ford Foundation • Elizabeth Arden 8 Hour Cream • Kiehls Ultra Facial Cream • Ardell Wispies

BEXBLAH
FITNESS!
HELLO MY STRONG FRIENDS! I hope you’re all having a great week! This week I’m going to talk about having a healthy relationship with food. A healthy relationship with food is actually something that few people have. Growing up I was never happy with my body really, I was always on some form of ‘diet’, I would fluctuate loads! I thought of certain foods as ‘good’ and ‘bad’. I had a bad relationship with food. Now, I’m pretty certain in saying I have a good relationship with food - no foods are ‘banned’ from my meals, I know what foods to eat in order to fuel my body properly and I don’t see any food as ‘good’ or ‘bad’. Because I love going to the gym and working out, I know what kinds of foods will fuel my body so that I can have the most energy possible and benefit from my workouts. If I really feel like a certain food - I have it. Simple as. But I didn’t just wake up one day and have this mindset and attitude, a few years ago I was eating whatever I felt like
too - but my meals consisted mostly of dominos, chinese, chocolate, high calorie, low nutrition, high sugar, high salt foods. It’s a process. I first had to learn all about food and nutrition and what nutrients and macros your body needs. There was a period when I first started to get myself together that if I felt like a certain food I didn’t eat it, because I had to get my nutrition right first. So I get it, you can’t just ‘eat what you want’ - because some days we all just want to comfort eat, and that’s not beneficial either. I guess that having a good relationship with food is eating what you know your body needs, but not depriving yourself either. • BREAD IS NOT BAD • CARBS ARE NOT BAD • FAT IS NOT BAD • CHOCOLATE IS NOT BAD All of the above foods won’t ‘make you fat’ unless you eat them in excess amounts, but that applies to every food. If you’re doing a certain diet at the moment for a ‘quick fix’ or ‘fast results’ - sorry, but you do not have a good relationship with food. These diets may provide quick weight loss, but what you might not realise is, that weight is mostly made up of muscle and water weight - not actually fat. Those diets also totally mess up your metabolism and therefore when you go back to ‘eating normal’ you will put on weight quicker than before. It’s a vicious cycle.
reputable nutritionist, or a personal trainer who is qualified to give nutritional advice (some are not). I personally recommend Recalibrated Bodies for nutritional plans, they are amazing. Both Amanda & Daniel have so much knowledge on all things food and nutrition. If buying a nutritional plan isn’t in your budget right now, even follow them on Snapchat - @recalibratedb Facebook - Recalibrated Bodies or Instagram @ recalibratedbodies - they’re always giving out amazing free information! Hope you have a great week and I’ll be back next week with some more fitness related goodness!
If you feel like you’re a bit lost when it comes to nutrition and food, or that you have a bad relationship with food, don’t fret. Get yourself in contact with a You can find me on Facebook ‘Bexblah Makeup’ or Instagram ‘Bexblah’.

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... Macroom Bypass By 2023? Taoiseach Leo Varadkar has assured both the Dáil and the people
of Kerry and Cork that the bypass for Macroom and Ballyvourney will commence as scheduled. This assurance was made following questioning from Kerry TD Michael Healy-Rae during a debate in the Dáil on Tuesday, Feburary 12th. Michael Healy-Rae’s questions arose from concerns that funds would be taken from the Department of Transport, Tourism, and Sport to help rectify the overrun in the budget for the children’s hospital. Deputy Michael Healy-Rae welcomed this assurance stating, “The bypasses are vital for the further economic growth of Co. Kerry, and to allow ease of movement in and out of the county from the Cork side.” Preparatory work for the bypass began in 2017, with construction scheduled to begin in 2020. The bypass will cut current travel times to under fifteen minutes – currently it can take anywhere from 30 to 90 minutes to travel the same distance. Currently, the bypass is planned to open in 2023.

HEALTHY RECIPES for 2019
Spring Lamb... with a difference!
As many of us went vegetarian or even vegan for January, then for February we must celebrate lamb or “#lambruary”. Great Irish lamb is truly wonderful and has so many tasty uses beyond the traditional roast leg . and most of all, its in season now. So here is one for you to start with...
LAMB RAGU PAPPARDELLE INGREDIENTS
PASTA • pasta flour 500g, plus extra for dusting • fine sea salt a pinch • eggs 4 large • egg yolks 2 LAMB RAGU • rosemary 2 handfuls, leaves picked • garlic 2 cloves, peeled
• • • • • • • •
anchovy fillets in olive oil 4 condimento morbido or white balsamic vinegar 150ml lamb neck on the bone 1kg plain flour 2 tbsp vegetable oil 3 tbsp white wine a splash chicken stock 500ml extra-virgin olive oil 3 tbsp
METHOD
Put the flour in a mound on a clean worksurface, make a well in the centre and sprinkle in the salt. Add the eggs and yolks, then use your fingers in a swirling motion to incorporate the eggs into the flour – it should form a crumb-like mixture. Bring this together using the palms of your hands to make a firm dough, then knead for 10 minutes until smooth. Wrap in clingfilm, then chill for at least 1 hour. Remove from the fridge 1 hour before use. Put the rosemary, garlic, anchovy fillets and vinegar into a food processor and blitz to a green sauce. Season the lamb neck well and dust with the flour. Heat the vegetable oil in a large casserole, brown the lamb neck all over until golden, then remove to a plate. Add the white wine to deglaze the pan and reduce until the liquid evaporates. Put the lamb neck back in along with the green sauce and top up with chicken stock to just cover. Bring to the boil, then turn down to the lowest heat and gently simmer for 3 hours. Put the pasta through a pasta machine – starting from the widest setting, to the penultimate setting – it should be the thickness of a 5p piece. Lightly dust a clean worksurface with flour and lay the pasta sheet out. Using a sharp knife, cut the pasta widthways into 3cm-wide ribbons. Dust lightly with flour and set aside. The lamb should now be falling off the bone. Remove from the pan and reduce the sauce until thickened. Use two forks to shred the meat, being wary of small bones, then tip the meat back into the sauce. Keep warm. Cook the papardelle in a large pan of boiling salted water for 2-3 minutes or until al dente. Use tongs to tip the pasta into the sauce, add the olive oil and enough pasta cooking water to coat, then serve.

LAUGHTER ....THE BEST MEDICINE ! A FORMER SERGEANT IN THE MARINE CORPS TOOK A NEW JOB AS A HIGH SCHOOL TEACHER.
Just before the school year started, he injured his back. He was required to wear a plaster cast around the upper part of his body. Fortunately, the cast fit under his shirt and wasn’t noticeable. On the first day of class, he found himself assigned to the toughest students in the school. The smart punks, having already heard the new teacher was a former Marine, were leery of him and he knew they would be testing his discipline in the classroom. Walking confidently into the rowdy classroom, the new teacher opened the window wide and sat down at his desk. When a strong breeze made his tie flap, he picked up a stapler and stapled the tie to his chest. There was dead silence… the rest of the year went quite smoothly.
KICK LIKE A MULE
A newlywed farmer and his wife were visited by her mother, who immediately demanded an inspection of the place. While they were walking through the barn, the farmer’s mule suddenly reared up and kicked the mother-in-law, unfortunately killing her instantly. At the funeral service, the farmer stood near the casket and greeted folks as they walked by. The pastor noticed that whenever a woman would whisper something to the farmer, he would nod his head “yes” and say something. Whenever a man walked by and whispered to the farmer, he would shake his head “no” and mumble a reply. Curious, the pastor later asked the farmer what that was all about. The farmer replied, “The women would say, ‘What a terrible tragedy,’ and I would nod my head and say, ‘Yes, it was.’ The men would ask, ‘You wanna sell that mule?’ and I would shake my head and say, ‘Can’t. It’s all booked up for a year.’”

A CRUSTY OLD MAN WALKS INTO THE LOCAL LUTHERAN CHURCH AND SAYS TO THE SECRETARY, “I WOULD LIKE TO JOIN THIS DAMN CHURCH.”
The astonished woman replies, “I beg your pardon, sir. I must have misunderstood you. What did you say?” “Listen up, damn it. I said I want to join this damn church!” “I’m very sorry sir, but that kind of language is not tolerated in this church.” And with that said, the secretary leaves her desk and walks into the pastor’s study to inform him of her situation. The pastor agrees that the secretary does not have to listen to that foul language. They both return to her office and the pastor asks the old geezer, “Sir, what seems to be the problem here?” “There is no damn problem,” the man says. “I just won $200 million bucks in the damn lottery and I want to join this damn church to get rid of some of this damn money.” “I see,” said the pastor. “And is this old nag giving you a hard time?”

TORQUING CARS! FORDS SPECIAL EDITION MUSTANG CELEBRATES BULLITT
Ford’s Mustang BULLITT was introduced here recently - partly by having people drive it around Mondello. The 460PS 5-litre V8 special edition model marks the eponymous famous film’s 50th anniversary. Yes, that’s the one in which Steve McQueen starred and will be forever remembered for his famous 10-minute car chase. Bits and pieces of the movie are echoed in the styling of the special edition - a full 50 years later. They include chrome accents, black grille and minimal badging. But there is a lot of modernity too - there would want to be for the price. There is a 12ins digital cluster with a Bullitt welcome screen as well as Recaro seats. It is claimed that rev-matching technology on board means smoother gear-changes. And yet there is a V8 ‘blip’ during downshifts. As well as all that there is a Premium 1000-watt B&O sound system. The standard B&O system has a dual-voice coil subwoofer for (Ford say) “deep, crisp bass and high-performance three-way front door speakers for even sound distribution throughout the cabin”. And all this because of an epic car chase half a century ago. It’s fair to say that 10-minute long sequence in “Bullitt” with Steve McQueen at the wheel of a 1968 Mustang GT fastback as he chases two hit-men through the streets of San Francisco will never be forgotten. But how much will it cost to own a car with the movie’s name on it? Well, the 50th anniversary model has just gone on sale here and prices start from €73,092. It’s a lot of cash for certain but for the enthusiasts out there, I don’t think that money is really an object. They will bite the Bullit and chase down the dream. (indo motoring)
HAYNES CAR MANUAL FOUNDER WHO SOLD MORE THAN 200 MILLION COPIES WORLDWIDE DIES AGED 80 AFTER SHORT ILLNESS The creator of the Haynes Manual repair guide series has died at the age of 80.
John Haynes went from having a lonely and isolated childhood in Sri Lanka to becoming the recognisable face of a global publishing brand. His step-by-step photographic illustrations were an instant hit and the first print run of 3,000 sold out in less than three months. Since then more than 200 million Haynes Manuals have been sold around the world. The books have spawned the Haynes Publishing Group PLC and the Haynes International Motor Museum in Sparkford, Somerset. Mr Haynes passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Friday evening on February 8 after a short illness.
1.7 MILLION VEHICLES RECALLED FOR DEADLY TAKATA AIRBAGS - INCLUDING MODELS FROM SUBARU, TESLA AND BMW
Faulty Takata airbags have forced car manufacturers including Subaru and Tesla to recall 1.7 million vehicles after the deadly inflators killed at least 23 people. The moves, announced on Friday by the government, are part of the largest series of automotive recalls in U.S. history. About 10 million inflators are being recalled in the U.S. this year, with as many as 70 million to be recalled by the time the whole mess ends late next year. The defective airbags - called a ‘ticking time bomb’ by one expert in Australia - were found to hurl shrapnel into drivers and passengers. At least 23 people have died from the problem worldwide and hundreds more were injured. Subaru, Tesla, BMW, Volkswagen, Daimler Vans, Mercedes and Ferrari are now recalling about 1.7 million vehicles to replace the potentially deadly air bag inflators made by Takata Corp. of Japan. Takata used the chemical ammonium nitrate to create a small explosion to inflate the air bags. But the chemical can deteriorate over time due to high humidity and cycles from hot temperatures to cold. The most dangerous inflators are in areas of the South along the Gulf of Mexico that have high humidity. In the latest round, Subaru is recalling 826,144 vehicles, including various Forester, Legacy and Outback models from 2010 to 2014. Mercedes is recalling 288,779 vehicles from model years 2010 to 2017. Volkswagen is recalling 119,394 vehicles, including Audi and Passat models from 2015 to 2017. BMW is recalling 266,044 vehicles from 2000 to 2004 model years and the 2007 to 2015 model years. The recalls also include 159,689 vehicles from Daimler Vans spanning model years 2015 to 2017. Tesla is recalling 68,763 Model S vehicles from 2014 to 2016 and Ferrari is recalling 11,176 vehicles of various models ranging from 2014 to 2018 model years. As of December, automakers have recalled 50.36 million inflators and replaced 27.2 million of them. That leaves more than 23 million yet to be replaced, according to the NHTSA website.

‘OLDER DRIVERS’ ...ARE THEY REALLY A DANGER ON THE ROAD ?
KNOW YOUR RIGHTS: JOBSEEKER’S BENEFIT AND SUBSIDIARY EMPLOYMENT Question I was working full-time and was also doing a few hours with another company in the evenings. I recently lost my full-time job. Can I claim Jobseeker’s Benefit and continue working a couple of hours each evening? Answer Jobseeker’s Benefit is a weekly payment from the Department of Employment Affairs and Social Protection (DEASP) to people who are out of work and are covered by social insurance (PRSI). As a general rule, you cannot get Jobseeker’s Benefit for any day you are employed or self-employed. However, it is possible to do some subsidiary work and still get Jobseeker’s Benefit for the day in question. Subsidiary employment is work that could have been done while you were in full-time employment and outside your normal working hours. For example, you may work a full-time job during the day and have a part-time job in the evening. The part-time job is known as subsidiary or secondary employment if you were able to do the part-time work without it affecting your full-time job for a period of at least 6 months. If you have subsidiary employment, you should always check with the Department of Employment Affairs and Social Protection to see whether or not your Jobseeker’s Benefit will be affected. If you have less than 117 paid PRSI contributions in the 3 years before becoming unemployed there is a limit on the amount you can earn from subsidiary employment while getting Jobseeker’s Benefit. From 1 January 2019, the amount you can earn has increased to €144 per week (or €7,500 over 12 months). There is no earnings limit if you have more than 117 paid PRSI contributions. If you are a farmer with other full-time employment, your farming will be your subsidiary employment.

Just like young drivers, senior motorists often suffer from the perception that they are a risk on the road. But it can be argued many of them are far better than those who criticise because they have acquired so many skills and experiences over decades behind the wheel.Of course, there is always room to improve. If we are being truthful, we have all acquired driving habits over the years that may not be the best. But it is never too late to change. However, that means clinically assessing our own standards of driving - and that goes for all ages. The experts say you can stay safer for longer if you re-examine your driving and are honest about areas you find increasingly difficult. These include reversing and/or engaging a roundabout which seem to challenge lots of people. The issue of ‘senior’ driving is being raised by road safety and breakdown organisation GEM Motoring Assist from the UK. They stress reaching a certain age does not automatically mean a total loss of your ability to drive, judge distances or read road signs, for example. Critically they emphasise how ageing can affect people in different ways and at different stages in their lives. I think that senior drivers can impart a lot of advice and example to younger drivers so there can be loads of beneficial interchange.GEM points out: “Popular opinion too often suggests that older drivers are a menace and should undergo mandatory re-tests - or be purged from the highway.”But, they insist, we should be keen to encourage them to be mobile for as long as they are ‘safe’.A key point is that we’re all more vulnerable on the road than perhaps we think we are. Here are core tips for staying safe behind the wheel regardless of age: • Get and stay fit. • Get a regular eye test. • Make sure your car suits you. • Plan your journeys to avoid busy times. • Build in plenty of breaks on longer journeys. TALKING SPORT WITH THE TRALEE ADVERTISER EVERYTHING’S COMING UP ROSES! SEAN’S IN GREEN: West Kerry native and ex Tralee Dynamos player Sean Kennedy is one the early rungs of the professional ladder as he settles into life at Sunderland. This week he was named on the Irish u17’s team by manager Colin O’Brien for games against Poland and Belgium in Marbella.
with “The Voice” Pat Harnett
FAI NATIONAl P.R.O. OF THE YEAR KERRY AND TRALEE THE BIG WINNERS AT THE WEEKEND: Firstly it was a wonderful night in the Austin Stacks Park last weekend with Kerry defeating Dublin. And as important as the victory was the performance was even better and this young Kerry side certainly stood up to the visitors. Kerry and Dublin still have a number of players to come back in but we will see as the year progresses how important this win will turn out to be. It is the ideal start for Peter Keane and amazing to see that he still has not lost a game in the Kerry set-up since he came in as minor manager. And while he certainly won’t be quoting that stat going by his first three games it could be a while before that winning streak is broken. Now by today you will have read all the reviews and opinions on the game that you need for those more qualified to comment on football than me. What I want to acknowledge here is that Tralee was certainly a big winner as well on the night. The stadium looked great with its new shed end, the pitch was in great shape thanks to the ground staff and the County Board deserve great credit for getting so much right in the build-up to the game including the pre-game show from Liam O’Connor and band. With Mayo to come to Tralee there will be at least one more big night in the League. If this is a patch on the night in 2019when Dublin came to town then the calls for all the League games to be played under lights in Tralee will grow stronger. But rather than me talking about it here is what the Dublin GAA Fans Facebook said: ‘Not long back from Tralee and what a fantastic weekend it was despite the result. Two amazing teams playing attacking fluid football and playing the game the way it should be played and a great advertisement for Gaelic football. ‘Tralee was rocking and there was entertaining good-natured banter with the good people of Kerry. With the way the Super 8’s is set up, we may not meet again until the All Ireland Final (should we both qualify) which is rather disappointing. ‘Kerry it was an absolute pleasure

and thank-you once again for the warm welcome and reception in Tralee.’ And there was another post that it worth sharing. A gentleman had a fall at the game and broke his hip. TRALEE CLUBS WELL REPRESENTED IN THE 13’S AND 15’S LEAGUE OF IRELAND TEAMS: Next month Kerry will be represented in the four underage League of Ireland age groups – u13’s, u15’s, u17’s and u19’s. The older two age groups have signed their squads with a number of the 17’s from last year who did Kerry proud under the management of FAI RDO Kerry Darren Aherne. The commitment of the management, squad and the KDL has seen them set to make their debut in the u19’s League of Ireland on the weekend of March 10th with the 17’s getting their campaign underway a week earlier. Both squads are awaiting the final publication of their fixtures which are due this week. At u13’s and 15’s the expectation is that Kerry will be in leagues with Cork City Cobh Ramblers, Limerick FC, Galway FC and Athlone. The 15’s competed well last year and have Danny Diggins and Jimmy Clancy as their management this season which is due to kick-off on the weekend of March 17th. Kerry will be one of the 24 teams in the inaugural u13 League of Ireland which gets underway on the weekend of March 10th. This League has generated lots of discussion because of the age of the players. However the League has stressed to all the players who just missed the cut this time that they will continue to be monitored and will have opportunities to play Friday 15th February 2019
for Kerry into the future. From a Tralee point of view the work done by Dynamos and St Brendan’s Park from academy level up, as well as the coaching from the Kerry Schoolboys Girls League and the FAI’s Regional Academy, has seen a number of players from both clubs reach the level needed to compete at League of Ireland level. On the 13’s squad are James Fisher, Jack Slattery, Momhammed Abdalla, JJ Olitijan, Andrew Kerins and Finn O’Neill, Nathan Aherne and Bruno Browzy from St Brendan’s Park and Paddy McMahon and Jake Hoare from Tralee Dynamos. With the 15’s will be ex Park players Liam Carmody, Cianan Cooney, Sean O’Connell, Colin Doody, Conor Kerins, Sean Hill, Cillian Murphy and Samuel Aladesanusi with Andy Rogers signing from Tralee Dynamos. Kerry has a long tradition in supporting the League of Ireland with the KDL playing in the u21 Championship and Tralee Dynamos having a number of year in the now defunct A Championship. Now it’s the turn of a new generation to challenge themselves against the best. WOMEN’S LEAGUE OF IRELAND FRIENDLY FOR TRALEE: Mounthawk Park’s excellent facilities have already played host to Cork City Men’s team. This Sunday at 2pm it will be the Cork City Women’s team that will be in town for their Women’s League of Ireland pre-season friendly. They will take on fellow LoI side Limerick FC Women. Both clubs had Kerry players on their squads last season with Player of Year Savannah McCarthy and Hannah O’Donoghue playing with Cork and Rebecca Horgan on the Limerick FC team. It will be interesting to see if this trio or any new players from the county will feature in the game. Following the game there will be a coaching session for Kerry’s Girls ETP players which is open to all to come along and watch. Come along and see some of the countries top women’s soccer player in action in Mounthawk Park from 2pm on Sunday February 17th.
PLENTY OF ACTION AT THE TRACK: At the Kingdom Greyhound Stadium this Friday night it’s the first round of the GMHD.ie Juvenile Classic with a winner’s prize of e15,000. The night also features a fundraiser for the World Special Olympic games volunteers. On Saturday night there is a combined fundraiser for the Lispole National School and GAA club with lots of spot prizes and music after racing. The Sunday SIS meeting takes place on Sunday with an 8 race programme starting at 6.35pm. The track is currently taking entries for the Con and Annie Kirby Trial Stake which gets underway on Friday March 1st and the KGOBA Novice 750 yards on March 2nd. GARVEY’S CAN LEARN FROM KEANE’S AND CUP GAME: Last weekend Keanes Supervalu Killorglin put in another big performance against one of the top sides in the SuperLeague but again came away without any points. They lost 79-73 away to Pyrobel Killester. Again Ciaran Roe excelled hitting 19 points as did Royce Williams with Luis Filiberto Garcia Hoyes on 18. This weekend Garvey’s Tralee Warriors welcome the same opposition to the Sports Complex with a 7.30pm tip-off. The home side had a break this week with the withdrawal of Swords Thunder and have been working hard in training to get their revenge on the side that ended their Cup dreams in the semi-final. Killester then went on to win the Cup. On the SuperLeague table the Warriors are in joint second place on 24 points alongside Saturday night’s opponents as well as Belfast Star and UCD Marian. However the other three sides have played a game more than the Warriors so if they can win on Saturday night it will give their hopes of a top two finish a big boost. Templeogue lead the division on 30 points from 14 games. HISTOEY IN VITHIT KABB FINALS FOR ST BRENDAN’S The second weekend of action in the Kerry Area Basketball VITHIT finals took place in front of a packed Presentation Gym in Killarney. History was made by the St Brendan’s Girls in the u12 Girls Plate Division 3 final. Coached by Charles O’Sullivan the girls were the first from the new section of the club to reach and win a final. Other Tralee winners were Tralee Tigers in the u14 Boys Division 2 Plate and St Brendan’s in the u18 Boys Division 1 Cup,

TALKING SPORT WITH THE TRALEE ADVERTISER KERRY NAVIGATORS CALL IT RIGHT: There was great success for Kerry at the Galway International Rally with Paul Nagle calling the notes for Craig Breen who took the win in their Ford Fiesta R5. His fellow Killarney navigator Noel O’Sullivan navigated Jon Armstrong to 4th in another Fiesta R5. Killarney and District Motor Club member Bantry’s Daniel Cronin was 8th in his Fiesta with JJ Cremin on the notes. Kerry fans will be hoping to see these crews in Kerry for the Rally of the Lakes in May or maybe even in the Circuit of Kerry a month earlier. BUSY WEEK ON THE HANDBALL FRONT: In the week where he received two honours at the Kerry Sports Star Awards Dominick Lynch won his Masters A singles semi-final beating Limerick’s John O’Connor 21-1, 21-3. There was also success for Ballymac’s Daire Keane in the Junior B singles semifinal where he saw off Clare’s Glen Murray 21-14, 21-16. There will be action this week with Pat Lacey from Asdee in action in the Emerald Masters B singles semi-final, Darragh Lynch and Sean Quirke in the 40x20 Boys u16 doubles semi-final and Dominick Lynch plays in the 40x20 Masters A singles Irish Nationals in County Mayo this Saturday. WHEELBLASTERS HEAD WEST: The Kingdom Wheelblasters head west for Round 7 of the Irish Wheelchair Basketball League. They are the first Kerry side to play at the top level of the game and while it is a steep learning curve, they have one win in the League, it is great to see them mixing it with the best. CHARLIE BOXES TO SUCCESS: Ballyduff’s Charlie Fitzgerald, who is the Irish Boy 2 72kg champion took on another Irish champion Mike Sweeney from the Ennis Boxing club in the final of the Limerick Junior Cadets. And it was the North Kerry fighter who took the win. Ballyduff will enter 14 fighters in the Kerries Tournament in two weeks with all the Irish and European champions taking to the ring. BUSY TIME FOR KILLORGLIN HOCKEY PLAYERS AFTER MID-TERM: The First Years and Minor hockey sides, 2nd Years, in the Intermediate School Killorglin will have a busy time after they come back from their mid-term break. They will have games against Fermoy, Christ the King from Cork and Regina Mundi also from Cork between February 15th and March 16th. Lacey Cup date announced: There is widespread concern in the
cycling community that the Ras will not take place this year. Ireland’s premier international stage race has always attracted a stellar field but when An Post pulled the plug in 2017 the Ras has been unable to find a title sponsor. Closer to home and Sean Lacey has been in touch to say that the opening race of the 2019 season, the Lacey Cup will take place on Sunday March 3rd. SWIMS CONTINUE: The Tralee Bay Swimming club Winter Swimming continues on a weekly basis with those brave enough taking to the water from 11am on Sunday mornings. KERRY COMMUNITY GAMES NEWS: The action at the weekend was on the cultural side of the Community Games. In the singing competition from our area Ciara Murphy from Ballymac won the u12 Solo singing while the singing group from the same club finished second. The Solo u16 was won by Gearoid Meehan from Boherbee/ Coghers/ Manor with Meadhbh from Spa Fenit/ Barrow 4th in the same competition. In the Solo music U16’s Peter Doyle from St Brendan’s Oakpark took second place while Maggie Scanlon from Ballymac was second in the u16 Recitation. SCOR NA BPAISTE: Clubs in the Tralee area are reminded that the youngest Scor competition for those who attend primary school will take place in the Gaelscoil on March 13th. All the usual competitions will take place with the winners qualifying for the County semi-final – North Kerry – on March 23rd at 4pm in St Joseph’s Secondary School in Castleisland. The County Finals of Scor na bPaiste including the quiz will be held in the Glenbeigh Community Centre on Saturday April 6th. SENIOR SCOR QUIZ: The Kerry Scór quiz final is expected to take place on Friday March 8th in the Centre of Excellence Currow. All Clubs in Kerry are entitled to send a team of four to this table quiz and the winning team will go directly to the All-Ireland final which will take place in ‘The Travellers’ Friend’ Theatre/Hotel, Castlebar, County Mayo, on Saturday February 16th. AUSTIN STACKS NEWS: The under 6’s are back at the Mounthawk Gym this Sunday at 11am while the u8’s are at the same venue from 12. The u10’s continue to train on the Green The Green Astro from 11am and any members of all the age groups who have yet to return will be more than welcome. The u12’s train as usual in Connolly Park as they build up to their opening Tralee Area Board Football League Division 1 game versus John Mitchels on February 23rd. Players an mentors are asked to

make then familiar with the new format. The 14’s and 16’s train as normal this weekend with the 16’s at the new time of 12 to 1.15pm. There will be a training course for Chairpersons, secretaries and PRO’s on Wednesday February 27th at the Centre of Excellence in Currans. ST PAT’S NEWS: There was no winner of the Lotto from the numbers drawn 8,9,26 and 28 with the next jackpot being e4,600 and the draw on Sunday night in Skelper Quanes Bar, In the Academies at Cumann Iosef there were great numbers and sessions by the u6’s and u8’s, where the Player of the Week accolade was shared by Jace and Rylan Flynn, and the u10’s. The u12’s are training on Friday from 5.45 to 6.45 on the Blennerville Astro and on Sunday they go indoors to Cumann Iosef from 11am. The u14’s are ready for their first game this Sunday when they play John Mitchels in Division 2 of the Tralee Town Board League at 12 noon at the Mitchels complex. The minors went down to Ardfert 3-10 to 1-07 in the Tralee Town Board Minor League Division 2 Round 2 clash. They are away to Kigarvan / Tousist in Division 5 of the Minor Football League this Saturday at 3pm. The Seniors edged out Na Gaeil 1-08 to 2-06 in the St Brendan’s League in a game played in tough conditions on Friday night in John Mitchels. They are back in Mitchels where they play the hosts on Sunday at 2pm. There are still some tickets available for Saturday as the club Celebrates Its Past and starts to Build its Future. The night, including finger food and a disco, promises to be a great night for new and old members of the club with the tickets costing only e15. KERINS O’RAHILLYS NEWS: The seniors went down 2-08 to 4-08 in the Tralee Town Board League in Connolly Park. Following a tight first half there was only 3 points between the sides with the Stacks leading 2-05 to 2-02. The two goals from the Black and Amber were the difference between the sides in the end. In the Tralee Town Minor League Division 1 the Stacks were also the opposition and they led by two at the break 2-6 to 1-7. The Stacks held on for a narrow win but this game will stand to the Rahilly’s players for the up-coming County League. The Minors are away to Renard / St Mary’s at 3pm this Saturday. Training for the u12’s, u14’s and u16 girls continues at both the Complex and Ballyrickard at the usual times and new members are always welcome. The Minors and Juniors train outdoors on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6.30pm. Friday 15th February 2019
The club were honoured to host Round 2 of the National Senior Ladies League in Strand Road on Saturday last. The game ended in a draw. Best of luck to the Kerry Ladies for this year! The Academy kicked off at 11am in Tralee Sports Complex on Sunday morning last and attracted a large attendance. The children were all enthusiastic & full of energy to start off the football season. The coaches as always started off with enthusiasm to teach the football skills in a friendly atmosphere. Training continues at the usual times each weekend as do the u12’s, u14’s and u16’s. BALLYMAC NEWS: In the St Brendan’s League the seniors took on John Mitchells on a cold wet night at home. However the game was a cracker with nothing between the sides until a late goal saw the visitors win 2-10 to 2-07. In the Tralee Minor League a high scoring encounter ended Ballymac 5-11 to Na Gaeil’s 4-12. They start their Keane’s Killorglin County League away to Finuge at 3pm this Saturday. The players and mentors are asked to make themselves familiar with the new rules and regulations of the Minor League. Lotto: There was no winner of the Lotto from the numbers drawn 2,16,18 and 22 and the next jackpot was e8,400. The club thanks all those who attended the Open Forum and gave their views. Also a big thanks to the Kerry County Committee and to TJ Ryan who was an excellent guest speaker. Membership is now due and all are asked to pay by the various methods allowed. Please note that all pitch bookings go through David Slattery and Maureen O’Shea. ON THE GREEN: CASTLEISLAND GC: The winner of the Senior Competition was Patsy Sweeney from Mike O’Connor with Des Byrne in third. The Mixed Scramble was won by Willie Galvin, Annette Galvin and Mary Scanlon. In second place were Mary O’Sullivan and Patsy Sweeney. TRALEE GC The Men’s competition was won by Edward J Morrison from Donagh Shanahan and Ger Power. The Ladies competition sponsored by Garvey’s Supervalu went to Anne Moran from Philomena Stack and Kathleen Houlihan in third.
