LEGAL MATTERS CORNER MIRIAM MC GILLICUDDY ANSWERS YOUR LEGAL QUERIES
Tim is concerned about reports that his employer is going to use CCTV to monitor his workplace. He uses a company car and there are also reports of putting in cameras in the car. He is wondering what his rights are? We all have rights to privacy which do not disappear when we enter the workplace. Employers have a duty to provide a safe work environment. CCTV if introduced into the workplace should be used fairly and proportionately and a policy in relation to the CCTV worked out with employees or employees representatives. It should be clear what the CCTV will be used for. It could be used for security, health and safety, to monitor employees or by private investigators in the workplace. Any CCTV should be a proportionate response to risks in the workplace and should take account of the legitimate privacy and other interests of workers. Any personal data accrued through CCTV should be adequate, relevant and not excessive. CCTV should be used in the least intrusive way possible. Use of CCTV for monitoring employees is intrusive and needs to be justified and also notified clearly to staff as it should be if it is for health and safety reasons also. Covert surveillance would generally be used on case by case basis in a restricted way to capture an offence. It should be focused and of short duration. Another area which can cause concern are vehicle tracking devices but these should only be used for monitoring the location of vehicles not the person inside the vehicle. As you can imagine any image capturing that captures facial expressions and body language in the workplace without justification is incredibly intrusive. If employees are enrolled in a mobile device management system they must be fully informed about what it is for and the consequences for them. If an employee has a wearable device the health data should only be available for them and not the employer. Devices showing an employee’s location should only be used where necessary for a legitimate purpose and not for monitoring employees. France recently brought in a law allowing employees a “ right to disconnect “ after work from their work email and agreements to be negotiated between the employer and employee in this regard. This is for health and safety reasons and to avoid burnout. Law quip: If a picture is worth a thousand words, then why shouldn’t we judge a book by its cover? Medical Matters HOW DO YOU KNOW IF YOUR WEIGHT IS A PROBLEM? DR DAVID BUCKLEY
The key to living longer is having a waist measurement no bigger than half your height. The waste to height ratio is worked out by measuring around the narrowest part of your waist – technically between the lowest rib and hip bone – making sure you do not breathe in. As long as this is half your height or less, you should live to the average life expectancy – which is currently around 81 years old. But for every few inches over, you face losing months or even years of life. For example, an average 30-year-old man who is 5ft 10in tall – or 70 inches – should have a waist size no bigger than 35 inches. A 30-year-old 5ft 4in (64in) woman should have a waist size of 32 inches or under.
The waist to height ratio is a good predictor of ill health if someone is obese. A 30-year-old man of 5ft 10in (= 70in) with a 56-inch waist will have a waist to height ratio of 80% and can expect to lose 20.2 years from his life expectancy. Similarly, a 30 year old woman who is 5ft 4in (64in) tall with a 51-inch waist will have a waist to height ratio of 80% and could die 10.6 years earlier. Waist circumference is important because it shows the amount of central fat in the body and the amount of fat around the internal organs (liver, kidneys, heart, etc) which is linked to high cholesterol, diabetes and heart disease. The waist-to-height ratio is a far more reliable predictor of ill health and obesity than the Body Mass Index (BMI) – which is widely used.
You can work out the percentage by dividing your waist circumference by your height and multiplying by 100: e.g. waist = 35 inches, height = 70inches = 35÷70 x 100 = 50%. Ask your GP for help and advice about measuring your waist circumference. Next week I will discuss ways to lose weight.

Catching up with Castlegregory Golf and Fishing Club! I recently caught up with John Dillane , the 2019 Mens Club Captain of one of Kerrys best secrets , Castlegregory Golf & Fishing club . John says “Castlegregory Golf and Fishing Club is in Stradbally, Co. Kerry. This 9-hole links course overlooks Brandon Bay and is a 20 minutes’ drive from Tralee. Being the 2019 Captain of the Men’s Club at Castlegregory Golf and Fishing Club was not something that I had first envisaged when I came through the gates back in 2000. Since the day I became a member it has been a great journey for me. From that first day all the members and staff were welcoming and friendly. This is the same today as it was back then, and this is one of the main selling points for the club. How have the recent years been like ? “Like all golf clubs the
last few years have been challenging for us from the boom to bust and the falling numbers of people playing golf, but this now seems to have changed. We have seen this with the number of new members joining in the last few months. If you have not been a member for the past two years, the introductory membership fee for new members of €305 appears to be an incentive. This fee includes your membership to Golf Union of Ireland and Insurance fees. Members can also get a special rate for hire of golf buggies. Societies with 20 players or more can avail of a special rate of €20 per player.
Does the course close in the Winter months ? “As the course is a links course, it enables Castlegregory Golf and Fishing Club to be open for business all year round
and this has been reflected throughout the winter with no cancellations of any Sunday competitions. There has been over 30 members playing every Sunday with a shot gun start at 8.30 a.m. which will continue until mid-March. The shot gun start makes for a great atmosphere in and around the club house each Sunday as new members get to meet and play with the wellestablished members of the club. And your year ahead ? “Castlegregory Golf and Fishing Club has undertaken improvements over the winter season. This was overseen by Sam Leech and his team. The Club are looking forward to hosting the West Munster AIG Barton Shield which will be held on Saturday 13th and Sunday 14th July 2019. This 2 day event will see the best players in West Munster taking on each
other over that weekend. For anyone interested in returning to golf or taking up golf I would encourage you to put Castlegregory Golf and Fishing Club at the top of your list.” Thanks John (Chris Shortt was speaking to club captain John Dillane)

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... Chicago comes to Tralee
Light Opera Society of Tralee’s Chicago: A Musical Vaudeville with music by John Kander, lyrics by Fred Ebb, and book by Ebb and Bob Fosse is coming to Siamsa Tire, Tralee for four performances only from Wednesday to Saturday, March 6th to 9th. Set in roaring 20s Chicago, the musical is based on a 1926 play of the same name by Maurine Dallas Watkins about real-life criminals and actual crimes she reported on during her career as a newspaper court reporter. A story of greed, corruption, violence, exploitation, adultery and treachery – just about everything we hold dear in life - it is a satire on corruption in the administration of criminal justice. Light Opera Society of Tralee’s (LOST) production is again designed and directed by Grainne O’ Carroll who’s previous shows for LOST have included box-office smash hits Les Miserables, Phantom of the Opera, EVITA, West

Side Story and Little Shop of Horrors. Grainne has again teamed up with choreographer Katrina Galvin from Miltown, a 1st Honours graduate of UL who will shortly relocate to London where she will be represented by the famous Pineapple Studios. Lighting design is by John Hurley while Musical Direction is in the very capable hands of maestro Aidan O’ Carroll, who conducts the onstage orchestra and for the first time ever, actually gets to have a few lines of script. The super-talented cast is led by Clodagh Harrington as Velma Kelly. Clodagh from Tralee has previously created the roles of Evita. The enormously versatile Katrina Galvin not only choreographed the show but is also playing the leading role of Roxy Hart. Amos Hart is played by veteran James Brennan while Mary Sunshine is played by none other than the show’s director Grainne O’ Carroll. Billy Flynn the slick, ultra selfconfidant defender is played

by Marcus Nolan. Premiered in 1975 Chicago holds the record for being the longest-running American musical in Broadway history and is the second longestrunning show in Broadway history behind The Phantom of the Opera. It is the longestrunning American musical in West End history. The 2002 film version of the musical starring Richard Gere, Catherine Zeta Jones and Renee Zelweger won six Academy Awards including Best Picture as well as
numerous other awards. It continues to be one of the most popular musicals of all time. ‘All that Jazz’, ‘Funny Honey’, ‘Cell block Tango’, ‘If you’re good to mamma’, ‘All I care about is love’, ‘Razzle, dazzle’, ‘Me and my baby’ are just some of the memorable songs in the show. Kevin was diagnosed with Lewy Body Dementia when he was 53 years old, having been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease two years earlier, however he started to show signs of Parkinson’s three years before that. This story takes a look at his life ,the highs and lows and sometimes his struggle with life itself. The book then leads into day to day living with this horrible disease Lewy Body Dementia, not only from Kevin’s point of view as a patient but also how it affects his family and how his wife copes with being put in the role of carer. There are some wonderful practical and helpful tips on how to make life a little easier for everyone and some hints on how to have some difficult discussions with the patient before their mind begins to slip. Kevin and his wife Helena have been on Kerry Radio with Deidre Walsh on a couple of occasions and the interviews are available on podcast. Kevin’s book is for sale in all Horans Health Shops as well as on Amazon and Kindle

PERSONAL FITNESS CORNER Leighton answers your fitness questions
Question: I started running in January to lose weight and now I’ve set myself the goal of running a half marathon. Even though I initially lost some weight, I haven’t lost a lot of weight considering I’m running nearly every day. Also my back and knees are being to hurt, any tips? Aisling, Castleisland Hi Aisling... The hardest part of any fitness journey is taking the first step, so well done Aisling on beginning, making it a habit and becoming a healthier you. • Right now your motivated to go running by yourself, but consider joining a running group for support, company, safety and motivation on days your struggling. • Wear the right runners, you may need runners with extra cushioning, good arch support etc. • Add in strength training at least twice a week: • Injury Prevention - A stronger muscle will take pressure of your joints and connective tissues. • You need to strengthen imbalances that running can cause due to the limited range of motion and repetitive movement patterns which can lead to injuries. • Weight training burns more calories than running aiding greatly with weight/fat loss. • Add core training to strengthen the body as you run, so as to take pressure off your knees and back. • Follow a Half Marathon Training Plan – plans are available for free on websites such as www.runireland.com and www.runnersworld.com. Following a plan will ensure you don’t overtrain, as overtraining leads to injuries. • Prevention is better than cure: relieve tightness in the body through stretching, foam rolling, mobility work, yoga or sports massage. • Vary your running – try running on the beach or on grass, try speed training as well as long distance running, this will make you faster for your half marathon. • Running doesn’t guarantee weight loss. Follow a healthy, nutritious diet that adequately fuels your training and post-run recovery but also creates a small calorie deficit to enable you to lose weight...

Blank Canvas Eyeshadow Brushes Blank Canvas Cosmetics Website Personally, I can never have enough eyeshadow brushes. A good eyeshadow brush is key to good eyeshadow. I’m notorious for spending money on makeup and not enough on makeup tools, so I would really appreciate getting eyeshadow brushes as a gift. The Blank Canvas Cosmetics brushes are my favourite for many reasons. 1 - They’re so affordable, 2 - The quality is unreal & 3 - They have vegan brushes for all my animal lovers! I have selected a few of my must have eye brushes from Blank Canvas. You can also get the brushes in CH Chemist. The Original Beauty Blender €23 Beautybay.com When you use this it will change your makeup forever. I’m being serious, IT’S THAT GOOD! You use it damp to, apply foundation, blend concealer and blend cream contour. I have used the branded dupes of this and nothing compares to the original one. I never use makeup brushes for my foundation anymore, only this.

Co Enzyme Q10 may help to improve energy, stamina and may also play a role in speeding up recovery following exercise. If you are finding it difficult to maintain your energy levels throughout the day, experiencing the afternoon slump, relying on sugary foods Call Chris or Colette Tel: 066-7126399 or e-mail : traleeadvertiser@gmail.com

BEXBLAH
FITNESS!
HELLO MY STRONG FRIENDS! I hope you’re all having a great week! This week I’m going to talk about having a healthy relationship with food. A healthy relationship with food is actually something that few people have. Growing up I was never happy with my body really, I was always on some form of ‘diet’, I would fluctuate loads! I thought of certain foods as ‘good’ and ‘bad’. I had a bad relationship with food. Now, I’m pretty certain in saying I have a good relationship with food - no foods are ‘banned’ from my meals, I know what foods to eat in order to fuel my body properly and I don’t see any food as ‘good’ or ‘bad’. Because I love going to the gym and working out, I know what kinds of foods will fuel my body so that I can have the most energy possible and benefit from my workouts. If I really feel like a certain food - I have it. Simple as. But I didn’t just wake up one day and have this mindset and attitude, a few years ago I was eating whatever I felt like too - but my meals consisted mostly of dominos, chinese, chocolate, high calorie, low nutrition, high sugar, high salt foods. It’s a process. I first had to learn all about food and nutrition and what nutrients and macros your body needs. There was a period when I first started to get myself together that if I felt like a certain food I didn’t eat it, because I had to get my nutrition right first.
So I get it, you can’t just ‘eat what you want’ - because some days we all just want to comfort eat, and that’s not beneficial either. I guess that having a good relationship with food is eating what you know your body needs, but not depriving yourself either. • BREAD IS NOT BAD • CARBS ARE NOT BAD • FAT IS NOT BAD • CHOCOLATE IS NOT BAD All of the above foods won’t ‘make you fat’ unless you eat them in excess amounts, but that applies to every food. If you’re doing a certain diet at the moment for a ‘quick fix’ or ‘fast results’ - sorry, but you do not have a good relationship with food. These diets may provide quick weight loss, but what you might not realise is, that weight is mostly made up of muscle and water weight - not actually fat. Those diets also totally mess up your metabolism and therefore when you go back to ‘eating normal’ you will put on weight quicker than before. It’s a vicious cycle. If you feel like you’re a bit lost when it comes to nutrition and food, or that you have a bad relationship with food, don’t fret. Get yourself in contact with a reputable nutritionist, or a personal trainer who is qualified to give nutritional advice (some are not).

A BBQ in February... in Norway, yes!
Here we only use the BBQ. Grill when the sun is shining but places like Norway use it all year round so here is a great one for both the BBQ & #lambruary... very very tasty!
BARBECUED YOGHURT MARINATED SHOULDER OF LAMB
The yoghurt marinade is Greek in origin, a very simple combination of yoghurt, onion water (prepared from soaking chopped onion in boiling water), garlic and bay leaves. Start this dish a day in advance so that you allow for 24 hours marinating PORTIONS: 6 PORTIONS PREPARATION: 15 MINUTES PLUS 24 HOURS MARINATING COOKING: 2-3 HOURS INGREDIENTS
• • • • • • • • •
LAMB - 1.5kg shoulder of lamb 4-5 tbsp onion water 400g greek style yoghurt (goat yoghurt works well) 4 garlic cloves, finely chopped 4 bay leaves Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper ONION WATER 1 onion, roughly chopped 5 tbsp boiling water
METHOD
Onion Water: Place the onion in a bowl and pour over 5 tbsp of boiling water. When cool strain the water through a fine sieve into a bowl, pressing down on the onion to extract juice. Marinade: Mix together the onion water, yoghurt, garlic, bay leaves and a generous pinch of salt and pepper. Coat the lamb in the marinade, cover and refrigerate for 24 hours. To Barbecue: Heat a gas or coal barbecue to a low to medium heat (the coals should be white and without a flame. Place the marinated lamb on the barbecue and leave to cook slowly for 2-3 hours, turning and basting the lamb every 30-40 minutes to allow for even cooking (you will need to top up the coals to keep the heat on a charcoal barbecue). To Serve: Carve the meat and accompany with pilaf or saffron rice and a Greek Salad. If you would like a sauce for the meat try a simple tzatziki (yoghurt, mint and grated cucumber)

LAST NIGHT I RODE MY BIKE TO THE OFF LICENCE ... and bought a bottle of whisky. I put the bottle in the bike basket but before riding back I thought: what if I fall down for some reason? The bottle will break! So I drank the whole bottle of whisky before riding home. And thank God I did, because I must have fallen down about a dozen times before I got home.

There and Not There’ Photographic Exhibition opens at Siamsa Tíre THERE AND NOT THERE is an exhibition of photographic work by Victoria J Dean and Sharon Murphy which will be open to the public at Siamsa Tíre, Tralee from Saturday 16th February. Originally exhibited at Golden Thread Gallery, Belfast in 2018 and curated by Sarah McAvera, the exhibition shares a concern with landscape and with interventions in the landscape: built structures that emanate ambiguous force or presence; and semiallegorical child-figures who are sited or staged in different natural settings. The exhibition continues until Friday 22nd March, with an ‘In-Conversation’ event with the artists and an official launch on Saturday 23rd February from 5.00 7.00pm. Siamsa Tíre CEO, Catríona Fallon notes, “The work of these two artists lends itself wonderfully to the gallery spaces in Siamsa Tíre. Sharon Murphy’s background in theatre and fascination for theatrical spaces gives a particular resonance to her photographs in the building. The official launch on Saturday 23rd February will include an ‘In-Conversation’ event with the two artists and Siamsa Tíre CEO, Catríona Fallon from 5.15pm, followed by the official opening at 6pm. For further information visit https://www. siamsatire.com/gallery/there-and-not-there Siamsa Tíre would like to thank the Arts Council of Northern Ireland for their generous loan of one of the artworks. We would also like to thank the Golden Thread Gallery and Sarah McCavera for curating the exhibition. Siamsa Tíre is funded by the Department of Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, and Kerry County Council. Our Corporate Sponsor is Kerry Group. We would like to gratefully acknowledge the support of all three.

TORQUING CARS! REMEMBER THE CITROEN 2CV? FRENCH CAR MAKER UNVEILS ELECTRIC CONCEPT INSPIRED BY THE 1940S ICON
The 2CV is arguably Citroen’s most iconic model ever. Manufactured from 1948, it offered cash-strapped families in the car maker’s native France affordable motoring following the Second World War and became a roaring success with production spanning decades. Now Citroen says has brought its most recognisable vehicle into the 21st Century with the unveiling of the Ami One concept - a dinky and cheap electric car that’s slower than the original 2CV and could, in theory, be driven on the road by 16 year olds. When car manufacturers release concept vehicles these days they tend to be electric powered, have outrageous design and crazy top speeds.Citroen’s Ami One ticks just two of those boxes, as the top speed of the tiny city vehicle is just 28mph - that’s 12mph slower than the most sluggish of early-generation 2CVs from the late 1940s. However, it’s been designed that way for a reason. That’s because the concept isn’t a car - it’s classified as a ‘light quadricycle’, like theRenault Twizy, which is why 16 year olds can legally use it.This category is for vehicles that are ultra lightweight and have a limited top speed of just 28mph. Any young person with a provisional licence can use a certified light quadricycle on the road in the UK and across the EU. While only a concept for now, bosses at the French car maker said a version of the Ami One could be on the market in the next 48 months.
TEACHING THE OLD DOG NEW TRICKS !
The new hybrid Toyota Corollas (hatch, saloon, Touring Sports) are effectively on sale in Ireland as of now - amid great expectations of another big shift to the genre. So what brought me all the way to Mallorca to drive them? Well, earlier delivery meant the foreign and Irish events overlapped. But it was a great opportunity to drive the hybrid hatch and saloon with the bigger-selling 1.8-litre engines (I’ve previously driven hatch and Touring Sports 2-litrebased powertrains). The vast majority of the Corolla trio will be solely hybrid driven (there is a 1.2 petrol option in the hatch; a 1.6 petrol for the saloon). The hatch is projected to account for 40pc of buying, the saloon (55pc) and Touring Sports (5pc). The hatch is smart looking especially in two-tone but a bit smaller inside than the other two. It costs from €25,380 for the 1.2-litre turbo petrol and from €26,370 for the 1.8-litre hybrid. There is also a 2-litre hybrid. The saloon is a big car, less stylish, but with strong lines and a lovely interior, The inside of all three versions is vastly improved. There is a real feel of good quality materials and the sense of boring dash and surrounds is thankfully banished. It is a sizeable shift and one I think will surprise many people. The saloon has a 1.6-litre petrol, but far and away the main focus is the 1.8-litre hybrid. And the Touring Sport (similar passenger room to the saloon) is the best looking of the trio, but will only account for a small number of buyers. It has a 1.8-litre drivetrain. When I drove the 2-litre I felt obliged to put the foot down, get a bit of performance etc. With the 1.8-litre engine - especially in the saloon - there was a different sort of attitudinal backdrop. A colleague drove first and I began to realise that he had adapted to driving in what I’ll call hybrid mode: less pressure to push on. So when I got behind the wheel I was in less ‘aggressive’ driving mood. Instead of pushing hard, I cruised along. Instead of looking for and criticising the ‘whine factor’ that so regularly accompanied previous demands for acceleration, I tempered my style and moved much more quietly and smoothly. The result was not just a really quiet drive - the cars are so well insulated from road noise - but I got fuel consumption of up to 60mpg (in the saloon). As we slipped through sun-drenched, verdant countryside it struck me that I was, after all these years, finally coming to terms with how a mid-stream, hybrid family car can (should?) be driven, not just for the sake of MPG but because it is quite enjoyable to take things that bit easier. How much time is gained from rushing? There’s more to this hybrid gig than meets the eye, I think. I’m not saying it is the be-all and end-all but it has a fair bit going for it. And in my case I think it’s fair to say an old dog can learn new tricks.(Eddie Cunningham , Indo Motoring )
PIRELLI UNVEIL TYRES TO BE USED FOR F1 WINTER TESTING..
Nothing turns off the casual fan from Formula One more than the topic of tyre compounds, and F1’s latest attempt to simplify the variations in rubber seems to have been given the thumbs down. Pirelli have unveiled five different compounds to be used for this month’s winter testing as well as in-season tests, but just three colours to separate them. Ranging from hardest to softest, the colours are white (with no bracket), white, yellow, red, red (with no bracket) - also known as C1, C2, C3, C4 and C5. No bracket refers to the extremes of the compound ranges, not featuring the striped line just inside the circumference area inbetween the Pirelli branding. While this is confusing enough just in a graphic, trying to distinguish two tyres of the same colour by a lack of brackets on a moving car could prove even more of a struggle. The development has left fans up in arms, with many responding negativley to the announcement on Twitter. One user posted: ‘Why does F1 continue to ‘simplify’ itself by getting more complicated? I genuinely worry for the future of this sport’, while another simply stated ‘Let’s be honest, it’s only got more complicated.’ F1 fans criticised the sport last year for its vast range of tyres and colours with no clear hierarchy as compounds called ‘super soft’, ultra soft’ and hyper soft’ all featured throughout the campaign. Fans will be pleased to know that the situation should improve for the start of the season.

TALKING SPORT WITH THE TRALEE ADVERTISER EVERYTHING’S COMING UP ROSES!
with “The Voice” Pat Harnett
FAI NATIONAl P.R.O. OF THE YEAR HAPPY WEEK FOR MANY SIDES ON THE HARDWOOD: A STAR HONOURS FOR MOUNTHAWK BOYS: Kerry schools basketball has been on the crest of a wave this year with representatives in almost every final in the National Basketball Arena. While some have come up just short the opposite was the case for Mercy Mounthawk in the Subway u15A Boys final. The squad was again under the leadership of John Dowling, Jimmy Diggins and Lyndsey Moriarty and they defeated Malahide CS 42-32 in the semi-final and later in the day saw off powerhouse St Joseph’s College Galway 45-28 in the final. Mercy Mounthawk and Phobail Scoil Sliabh Luachra met in the all Kerry semi-final of the u4A Boys with the Rathmore school coming out on top 49-33. But they lost out in the final to St Joseph’s Galway 35-49. With wins for St Brendan’s and Mercy Mounthawk in the NBA and with Garvey’s Tralee Warriors flying high in the SuperLeague these are great times for the sport in the town. There were a number of other Kerry sides in this week’s 14’s and 15’s Subway finals. Presentation Castleisland took the u14 Girls title with wins over Loreto Dalkey 51-18 in the semi-final and were 56-27 winners over Scoil Chriost Ri Portlaoise in the final. Unfortunately Causeway Comprehensive lost to Colaiste Muire Ennis in the u15B final and Pres Castleisland just missed out on a double as they lost the u15A Girls decider 33-37 to Virginia College Cavan. KABB VITHIT FINALS: It was the second weekend of the KABB VITHIT Finals in the Pres Gym in Killarney and St Brendan’s had a good day winning the Men’s Division 1 and 2 finals. In the Division 1 Cup final they defeated KCYMS 90-80. Both sides were star-studded with players for Garvey’s Tralee Warriors and Keane’s Supervalu Killorglin and there was only two between the side at the half with Killorglin leading by 2 points 51-49. By the end of the third quarter the Tralee side had taken the lead by 5 and doubled this advantage in the final quarter for the win. In the Men’s Division 2 final St Brendan’s saw off St Paul’s Killarney 54-47. The Tralee side led 12-9 at the end of the first quarter and by the half had the gap out to 9 points 29-20. Both of these sides had players with National League

experience in this cracking game. The Tralee side stayed ahead in the final two quarters to take the title with 7 points to spare. SOME OTHER BRENDAN’S RESULTS: In the Lee Strand Leagues the u14 Division 2 game saw St Brendan’s defeat TK Killarney Cougars 42-41. In the u14 Division 2 Shield the girls defeated Caherciveen 37-16 and in the u12’s Division 1 St Mary’s were 40-26 winners over St Brendan’s. But in the all Tralee clash in u12 Girls Division 3 the St Brendan’s girls were too strong for Tralee Imperials. GARVEY’S GET REVENGE ON KILLESTER WITH DEFENSIVE MASTER-CLASS: Having gone out of the Cup and lost in the League to Pyrobel Killester the Tralee side were determined not to make it three losses to the same opposition. And in front of another huge crowd in the Complex the Warriors put on a defensive master class restricting the opposition to 55 points. Offensively they hit 71 led by Paul Dick who ended with 23 points. Killester led by 5 at the end of the first quarter 20-15 but from there on it was all Garveys and in a cracking second quarter they outscored the Dubliners 24-8 to lead 39-28 at the half. The Warriors has one hand on the three points at the end of the third quarter as they led by 16 points 58-42 and held on to take a vital win. For the home side Paul Dick ended with 23, Eoin Quigely on 16 and Keith Jumper hit 6. Garvey’s PRO Alan Cantwell said after this game that it was certainly all to play for in the SuperLeague. “This was a huge win as it keeps us in a three-way tie for second place but we have two game in hand over the League leaders Templeogue who are on 33 points and 6 ahead of the Warriors. Belfast Star and UCD Marian have 27 from 14. Warriors head to Belfast this weekend and also have to play Templeogue and also UCD Marian in back-to-back games.” NEXT UP: This week’s huge North South clash takes place in De La Salle College on Saturday night tipping off at 6.30pm. TRALEE AGAIN TO SEND TEAM TO INTERNATIONAL CHILDREN’S GAMES: For the past 14 years the Tralee International Children’s games, under the Chairmanship of Mike Friday 22nd February 2019
Culloty, have been sending athletes to the this huge underage sporting gathering. Teams have travelled all over the world to these games and this year they take place in Ufa in Russia. The Committee is in the final stages of selecting its athletes for this year’s team with 18 due to make the trip. The International Children’s Games are a multidiscipline competition and this year Kerry will have representatives in soccer, judo and track and field with fully qualified and vetted coaches travelling with the players. There will be a number of fundraising activities put in place and it would be great if the athletes could be supported as this is a trip of a lifetime for many of them. There were tentative discussions a few years ago to bring the ICG to Tralee and I feel this should be explored again especially with the addition of the IT Sports facility, Mounthawk Park and John Mitchels to name but a few to the sporting landscape. It would be a huge commercial and sporting occasion for the town if this could be organised.
SCOR NEWS: The All Ireland finals of Scor na Nog took place in Castlebar at the weekend with a huge crowd from Kerry making the trip. While the county did not have any winners on this occasion all those from Kerry taking part put in great performances and were great ambassadors for our clubs. From a Tralee point of view the Na Gaeil Leiriu (Sketch) group put on a great show called Side-line View which went down very well with the packed audience. They certainly gave the judges a headache but they eventually went with St Mary’s Antrim as the winners. The Na Gaeil performers were Aoife Ní Shúilleabháin, Áine Ní Shúilleabháin, Isabelle Ní Chonchra, Emily Ní Chonchra, Joshua de Róiste, Dearbhla Ní Chuirc, Ruairí Ó Rinn, Gráinne Ní Chuirc Senior Scor has reached the Munster semi-final stages which will take place this Saturday in the Community Centre in Ovens Co Cork. Kerry will be taking on the host county, Clare and Waterford for a place in the Munster Final in City Hall Cork on Saturday March 2nd. From a Tralee and North Kerry view-point Sonny Egan from the North Kerry Hurling and the Ballydonoghue Leiriu group representing North Kerry Football will be taking to the stage and we wish them the best of luck. Scor na bPaisti for those attending Primary School in Tralee will take place on Wednesday March 13th in the Gaelscoil. ATHLETICS NEWS:

On Sunday we have the 8 race SIS program starting at 6.35pm while the track is also taking entries for the KGOBAS Novice 750 yards which starts on March 2nd. COURSING NEWS: The Irish Cup meeting this weekend brings the curtain down on the coursing season and Kerry will be well represented in the various competitions. A select field of 64 take part in the blue ribbon Cup with the market being led by Watchman.
In the Munster Schools Cross Country finals that took place in Waterford saw Niamh O’Mahony from Pres Tralee winning the Inter Girls race in 10.42. Tralee Harriers / Mercy Mounthawk athlete Oisin Spillane took bronze in the senior boy’s race. A number of other Tralee athletes have qualified for the National finals in Clane on March 9th. Well done to the 46 schools that took part in the Allianz Cumann na mBunscol Kerry County Cross Country final which were held in Caherslee in front of a huge crowd of proud parents and family members and of course teachers who have put lots of hours into training these young athletes. TOP PART WEST COAST RALLY CHAMPIONSHIP GETS UNDERWAY: This Sunday the Top Part West Coast Rally Championship gets underway with the Abbeyleix Manor Hotel Rally hosted by the Birr Motor Club. They were part of the Irish D team that won the European Championships Premier C in the INEC at the weekend. Those involved in the sport in Kerry will hope that more people take up the sport. They wll be holding trials for the All Ireland’s that will take place in Killarney in May. Kerry plan to enter under 12’s, 15’s, 18’s, 23’s ladies and over 50’s teams. KERRY AWAY TO GALWAY THE GAA HIGHLIGHT: Kerry go into their next League test in great shape and on 6 points from their 3 games. This leaves them level with Mayo who only lead the Division on a +7 point scoring difference from Kerry. This Sunday at 2pm in Tuam Kerry are away to Galway who have 4 points. With Dublin playing Mayo the night before Kerry will know what they need to do to go top of the table by the time they throw in. And should Dublin beat Mayo and Kerry see off Galway they will have one hand on second place at the least with three games to go. It has been an impressive start for Kerry but with Peter Keane’s an experienced hand at the helm they will not be getting ahead of themselves. However with the Corkes players and David Clifford to come back Kerry are in a great place and another two points are certainly the aim this weekend. On the colleges front there are a number of Kerry players in the Sigerson Cup final with UCC facing St Mary’s Belfast. The Kerry hurlers were easy winners over Mayo to move into second place in their League Division 2 campaign and should get another win away to London this Saturday at 2pm.Westmeath lead the way on 6 points take on Meath on 3 in a game that, along with the Kerry game, will go a long way to shaping the top of the table. There are also a number of players lining out in the Fitzgibbon Cup final with UCC taking on Mary Immaculate Limerick.
