Medical Matters TOP TEN TIPS ON WEIGHT LOSS DR DAVID BUCKLEY 1. Limiting the amount of calories you consume is the most helpful way to loose weight. Burning up excess fat by regular strenuous physical exercise will also help. 2. Join fun, active clubs such as hill walking, jogging, cycling, dancing, aerobics, Zumba, etc. 3. Weight Watchers and Unislim are in every town in Ireland and have been helping people to lose weight for over forty years. 4. Choose ’’low fat and low sugar’’ in every food, such as milk, spreads, cheese, yoghurts, cereals, mayonnaise, etc. Never add sugar to tea, coffee, cereals, etc. Choose small portions of lean fresh meat, chicken, and fish and grill everything. 5. Avoid junk foods such as burgers, chips, crisps, pizzas, TV dinners, scones, chocolates, sweets, etc. Eat plenty of fruit and vegetables as snacks. 6. Do not drink fizzy drinks. Drink plenty of water instead. If you are stuck (eg. in the pub, in a friends house), have a diet drink such Diet Coke or Diet 7up or an isotonic drink such as Lucozade Sport or Club Sport.

7. Use a small plate when putting out your dinner. Eat regular meals. (Breakfast, dinner and evening meal). 8. Aim to get at least thirty minutes of strenuous physical exercise everyday or three and a half hours a week. Examples include brisk walking, jogging, cycling, swimming, rowing, tennis, football, dancing, etc. If you miss an exercise session on one day do twice as much the next. 9. Beware of wine, beer, stout and cider as they are loaded with calories. Also, alcohol can lower your resolve and lead you into temptation such as going to the chipper on your way home from the pub! 10. If you feel you deserve a reward, try to avoid food treats. If you are stressed try not to comfort eat but exercise instead. Try and change your eating habits and your commitment to exercise for life, rather than for a few weeks or months.

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... Hurry for the Curry at Grill & Thrill! When Grill and Thrill family restaurant opened its doors on Castle street last Autumn , its owner Irfan had a very simple goal, to serve the very best of what he served up . And with plenty of experience in the food and hospitality industry (A Tralee family man , he already operates the Tasty Bite restaurant & Takeaway in Pembroke street and another restaurant in Cork ), Irfan has done just that .A huge hit with all types of customers for lunch , dinner and takeaways, its the specialities on his menu that are proving very popular . Such as the Peri Peri Chicken Platters , Kebab meals (all types ) Shish Kebabs , Chicken Zinger Burgers, steak burgers ,Lamb Chops , Wraps , Pizzas and a great Kids menu. But Irfan had another challenge in mind ,with his food background “ I always wanted to serve up the best Curries in Kerry , not just Tralee “ and recently he has

just started to do that with the launch of his full Exquisite Indian Menu , sit down is available from 5pm to 10pm as well as a delivery and takeaway service .

“ My staff is key to my business , after all they represent me , “ says Irfan . And recently I have been able to take on a top Indian Chef with a lot of great experience . This has allowed me expand into the area of serving Top class curries ( as well as other indian delights ) to the people of Tralee “ And what a variety, at the last count we were talking over 20 styles of curry from the mild such as Tikka Massala or Korma to the very very hot like Vindaloo and Phall . “Mostly people know curries as a green curry

Owner Irfan along with his kitchen team (mild ) or a red curry (hot) “ says Irfan , but there is a lot more to curries than just that and we want our customers to enjoy such an experience . We are talking Rogan Josh , Jalfrezi,Jaipuri, Balti , Madras, Bhuna ,Biryani, Dopiaza , Vindaloo , to name a few and all served up with the Indian Classics such as Naan bread and Pilau rice .All the beef , lamb and chicken from Grill

& Thrill is fresh and sourced 100% in Munster And the prices ? fantastic value , especially when you consider the quality of the food served up to you. Really you’ll just have to call into Irfan and his team and have that real Curry Experience to appreciate it!

Planning Permission? Yes. Funding Available? Yes. Tralee to Fenit Greenway in 2019? A Must. IT was said that the old Tralee to Fenit railway line would never be transformed into a Greenway that would benefit to local tourism, because many believed that planning permission would never be granted. Well, the planning process has been completed, the money is available in the form of the €53 million for Greenway projects throughout the country but no decision as to if, or when, Kerry will receive its share for to develop the Tralee to Fenit Greenway has been made. Kerry-based Minister for Tourism Brendan Griffin has said that activity tourism is a huge focus for the country and providing high quality walking and cycling infrastructure will assist in attracting the large number of foreign tourists interested in coming here. The President of Tralee Chamber Alliance, Aidan Kelly, said: “The importance of getting the Tralee to Fenit Greenway across the line is a major issue for Tralee and the business community in the town and surrounding areas. It will transform the tourism 10

TRALEE ADVERTISER

sector in Kerry’s capital to no end. A decision on the funding is due before the summer. Minister Brendan Griffin has already played a key role in pursuing the delivery of the Tralee to Fenit Greenway. Now that the finishing line is in sight, we need him to keep the momentum up to ensure that such a lucrative development on our doorstep receives the required level of funding to see the dream come true.” Ministers Shane Ross and Brendan Griffin are due to announce the breakdown of allocations for Greenway projects in the second quarter of 2019, possibly as early as March or as late as June. Joe Cotter, a member of the Walk The Line Committee, said: “This is very important for tourism in Tralee. We’ve been told over the years that the money wouldn’t come unless there was planning permission. The planning permission has been granted, so now is the time. It’s been 25 years since the proposal to develop the old Tralee to Fenit railway line into a greenway was first discussed and a Friday 1st March 2019

quarter of a century later, the dream has not been realised.” Tens of thousands of people use the Greenways in Mayo and Waterford and the local economies in both counties have reaped the benefits of the resulting increase in tourism. The development of the Aqua Dome in Tralee in 1994 resulted in a major increase in tourism for the region and 25 years on, it is the most popular and important indoor feepaying attraction in Kerry. The Chief Executive of the Aqua Dome, Kieran Ruttledge, said: “The Tralee to Fenit Greenway has been on the agenda of the local authority for some time now and it’s about time we saw some action on it. We’ve seen the benefits that greenways have brought to places like Westport and Waterford, so

there’s no reason why it can’t lead to a similar injection of positivity to tourism in Tralee and bring lots more people to the town. The Aqua Dome has been in business for 25 years and we believe that for the next 25 years, the Tralee to Fenit Greenway can produce a similar reaction to what the Aqua Dome did. It will bring more business and people into the town and provide that all important WOW-factor.” Businesses across a range of sectors will benefit from the development of the Tralee to Fenit Greenway and where there’s a political will, there will be a Greenway.

HELLO STRONG PEOPLE!

I hope you’re all having a great week. I’ve been listening to and consuming a lot of content from James Smith (@ jamessmithpt) recently. I really like his no bs approach to losing fat and the whole fitness industry in general. Some people think he’s rude or find some of what he says offensive but the truth is… he’s trying to get his point across in a world where people idolize skinny teas, quick fix diets and fads. He is so full on with his approach because he has to make noise to be heard. His approach is simple, be more active, track calories (aka calorie deficit for fat loss, calorie surplus for gain and maintenance calories to maintain). Bexblah Beauty HELLO BEAUTIFUL PEOPLE! I HOPE YOU’RE ALL HAVING AN AMAZING WEEK! Over in Sydney I have a new job at an insane hair salon - Valonz, google it if you wish! In the salon I’ve had to opportunity to start doing makeup for photo shoots which you can only imagine I’m over the moon about! So this week I’m going to share photos from recent shoots - if you follow me on Instagram you’ve already seen these, sorry!

All the makeup looks I did for these shoots is meant to enhance the model’s look and compliment the hairstyle used. There are a few go to products that I use when I am doing makeup for camera. In no particular order… • • • • • • • • • •

LAUGHTER ....THE BEST MEDICINE ! AHHHH, OLD ROMANCE . . .

Janet was lying in bed one night. Art was falling asleep, but Janet was in a romantic mood and wanted to talk. She said: “You used to hold my hand when we were courting.” Wearily he reached across, held her hand for a second and tried to get back to sleep. A few moments later she said: “Then you used to kiss me.

MY MARRIAGE IS OVER. I loved my wife Lorraine in the beginning, but for the longest time I’ve had a crush on my friend ClaireLee Robins, who I know feels the same way about me. Eventually Lorraine found out about my secretive feelings, and just like that, she packed her bags and left. I do feel bad about it all.

Mildly irritated, he reached across, gave her a peck on the cheek and settled down to sleep. Thirty seconds later she said: “Then you used to bite my neck.”

But then I realised; I can see Claire-Lee now Lorraine has gone.

Angrily, Art threw back the bed clothes and got out of bed. “Where are you going?” Janet asked. “To get my teeth!”

I hope you are happy now..

A GERMAN LIFESAVER CARRIES A DOG THAT NEARLY DROWNED FROM THE BEACH... He plopped it down on the sand and did CPR, as the dog’s owner watched nervously from aside. The dog spat out water and stood up— the lifesaver saved it. “Oh my goodness, thank you so much for saving my dog!” the owner said, “Are you a vet?” “Vet? VET???” the German excalimed, “I’M LITERALLY SOAKING!”

But please, untie the rope and let her go.” The thief replied, “You must really love your wife, having no regard for your own safety.” The man said, “No, she’s my neighbour’s wife. Mine will be back shortly!”

TORQUING CARS! DRIVERS OF FULLY AUTOMATED VEHICLES SHOULD NOT BE HELD LIABLE FOR ACCIDENTS INVOLVING THEIR CARS’ - ABI

ONE of the major debates coming down the track on fully automated vehicles is liability in the event of an accident.Well the British association of insurers has come out unequivocally and said the following:”Drivers of fully automated vehicles should not be held liable for accidents involving their cars while the technology is in charge.”The association (ABI) says so in its submission to the Law Commission. The latter is helping to tease out how to incorporate the rules currently being decided internationally on standards for autonomous vehicles. The ABI says it would be “unfair” to expect a driver to intervene if the on-board systems got something wrong or were unable to prevent an accident. Now it is important to emphasise that we are talking ‘fully automated’ vehicles here, not the token gestures of automation that many cars now have. So it’s vehicles that can manage “all road conditions and scenarios” which give those on board “permission to stop thinking about the driving task and do other things”. Yes, it is a long way off but it just gives an idea of how complex and far-reaching the whole area of autonomous driving has, and will, become. An implication would be that manufacturers would not be allowed to register their vehicles as autonomous if there is still an onus on the driver to intervene in an emergency.”Until a vehicle can handle emergency scenarios without driver intervention they can only be considered to offer advanced driver assistance,” the association says. There’s a lot of work still to be done before you can sit in and let the car do the driving - without having to worry about who is responsible in the event of an accident.

HAVE THEY GOT IT WRONG ON ‘DIRTY DIESEL’ CARS? TESTS SHOW SOME BMW, MERCEDES AND VAUXHALL MODELS PRODUCE ALMOST ZERO HARMFUL NOX EMISSIONS

Some of the latest diesel cars on sale today produce no - or next-to-no - harmful nitrogen oxides (NOx) associated with causing tens of thousands of premature deaths in Britain each year, new independent research has revealed.A Mercedes-Benz family saloon with a diesel engine tested on the road by German motoring group ADAC was found to produce no harmful NOx pollution during controlled measurements. Meanwhile a BMW estate and Vauxhall Astra were recorded as emitting just one miligram of NOx per kilometer - significantly below the current legal threshold of 168 mg/km.The results bring into question the continued ‘demonisation’ of diesel by ministers at home and around the world that have resulted in a monumental downturn for the automotive industry, British job losses and manufacturers pulling operations from the UK. ADAC, which is similar to the AA in the UK but tests hundreds of vehicle every year at its laboratory in Landsberg on the outskirts of Munich, tested a range of diesel and petrol cars to compare the amount of harmful emissions produced during normal driving on the road.It found that a Mercedes C-Class 220d powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged diesel engine emitted no traceable NOx.Other diesel cars tested also produced incredibly low outputs.A BMW 5 Series 520d Touring estate - also with a 2.0-litre turbocharged diesel motor - emitted just 1mg per kilometre, as did an Opel (Vauxhall) Astra with a 1.6-litre diesel motor. In many cases, the diesel vehicle tested emitted less NOx than an equivalent petrol model, despite the former being more closely associated with producing dangerously high levels of toxic fumes. Hyundai’s i20 with a 1.0-litre turbocharged petrol also produced minimal amounts of NOx during the same on-road test, as did the 1.2-litre Suzuki Ignis - a car recently named as the most fuel efficient on sale. The findings question the prolonged assault on diesel cars carried out by the UK Government since the VW Group’s dieselemissions cheating scandal in September 2015.SMMT chief executive Mike Hawes has described the ongoing focus on oil burners as a ‘demonstration of diesel cars’ since the VW scandal, which has resulted in a huge shift change in opinion towards to fuel type. It has lead to a proposed ban on sales of petrol and diesel cars in 2040, higher Vehicle and Excise Duty tax rates for diesel models, additional parking and driving charges for diesel owners in big cities and potential restrictions from congested parts of the country. ‘We need to avoid penalising one vehicle technology over another and instead encourage the uptake of the latest low-emission vehicles by consumers. ‘The allegations against diesel cars made in recent months threaten to misguide policy making and undermine public confidence.’ The impact of the prolonged diesel crackdown has had a monumental knock-on effect for the motor industry.Demand for diesels has shrunk enormously in the last few years, especially in Britain, leading to slowed car showroom activity. 30

OF THE YEAR TRALEE TEAMS SELECTED FOR UFA GAMES, RUSSIA: After an absence of one year from the International Children’s Games and Cultural Festival, Tralee will again be represented at the Games in 2019 in Ufa, the capital city of the Republic of Bashkortostan, Russia. Ufa becomes the first city in the International Children’s Games to host both the Summer and Winter ICG Games and Tralee will participate at the Games for the 14th year since 2005 at Coventry. Chairman of Tralee ICG, Mike Culloty explained that the decision not to go to the Jerusalem Games was due essentially to health and safety reasons. “At the time it was likely that there would be security issues surrounding the Games due to some impending political decisions, most notably the moving of the American Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. We took a decision then not to take the children on the basis of those safety concerns.” The decision to reignite Tralee’s representation at the Games was taken by the ICG committee in December. “Inevitably the predominant feeling was that we should continue to provide the opportunity for young people in Tralee and Kerry to experience competition and sport at this level among their peers from all over the world, and that it would be a mistake not to make the effort to make it happen” said Mike. The team selected for Russia, representing Tralee in Judo, Athletics and Soccer, is now finalised and it’s all systems go from here to July as they set out to make the necessary arrangements for travel, accommodation, fund raising and team preparation. “The children are all very excited at the prospect of travelling to the Games in Russia and meeting and competing against athletes from places they have never even heard of!” Mike is quick to point to the level of support in the local community as a key element in making these dreams come true for the children in their chosen sports: “Our participation would not be possible in terms of raising the necessary finance to travel without the support of the local community and local business. We are most grateful for this support and it is appreciated greatly by Tralee ICG and the athletes”. Tralee ICG received a significant boost during the week with the approval of €1,000 from the Tralee Municipal District Community Support Fund. “Technically we represent Tralee Municipal District at the Games, which are organised on a Council to Council basis and agreement. Ninety City and Town

Councils are represented at the Games, who between them send up to 1500 children to the event. We are proud to be the only Irish representatives at the Games and appreciate Tralee MD’s support for our community based project”, Mike explained. The team, together with parents and coaches, held their first meeting on Friday night at the Education Centre, Tralee, where details of travel arrangements, registration requirements and plans for the next four months were made known to all present. It all promises to be an incredible experience for these young athletes. THE TRALEE TEAMS ARE AS FOLLOWS: JUDO TEAM (Coach: Danny Roche) Jack Costello, Firies: Stephen Palmer, Firies: Kristin Lyne, Ardfert: Donna Rodgers, Tralee TRACK AND FIELD TEAM COACH: Dearbhail Foley -Girls: 100m: Melissa Ahern, Aghadoe: Shot Put: Aine o Shea, Firies / Boys: 1500m Coren Hughes, Tralee: Long Jump: Bobby Byrne, Tralee

Young boxers from all over Kerry have been working hard in training and sparing over the winter months ahead of the championship season. The Kerry County Championships will be hosted by the Tralee Boxing Club this Saturday with a number of clubs taking part. While a number of fighters will go straight through to the Munster’s as they don’t have opponents in their weight division. However there will still be a full day of action on Saturday at the Tralee Boxing Club. Hopefully this will be the first step for a number of these fighters on the road to National glory later in the year. KINGDOM WHEELBLASTERS TO WELCOME THE BEST IN THE COUNTRY TO TRALEE:

SOCCER TEAM COACH (ROBIN O DAY; Asst Coach John Byrne) Richard Healy, Park FC: Ray Mc Grath, Park FC: Odhran Ferris, Park FC, Yago Cornide, Inter Kenmare: Alex Hennigan, Killarney Athletic: Alex Hoare, Tralee Dynamos, Cormac Dillon, Listowel FC: Kalvin O Sullivan, Killarney Celtic. LACEY CUP TO HIT THE ROADS AROUND TRALEE ON SUNDAY: The top cyclists in the country will be hoping that the mild weather lasts until Sunday as the Munster racing season gets underway with the 2019 Lacey Cup. Last year the surrounds of the roads were covered in snow with the climbs outside Camp looking like the Alps. Up to 200 riders are due to take part with the A1/A2/A3 riders away first followed by the A4’s who have a separate race. The organisers are always very thankful to the residents and motorists on the route who do have to put up with some traffic disruption during the race but this is kept to as little as possible. The race is always wonderfully organised by the Tralee Manor West Cycling Club with full cooperation from the Gardai, ambulance and a large number of volunteer marshals. If you are on the route please come out and cheer the riders on at the following times: Departure from the hotel in a neutralised start will be at 12:15 sharp. Friday 1st March 2019

The Kingdom Wheelblasters are blazing a trail as the first Kerry side to take part in the Irish Wheelchair Basketball League. This Saturday at John Mitchels they are the host club with 10 teams travelling to take part. The club is also hosting a Junior Blitz in the same venue on Saturday. (Here is another great example of Sports Tourism that continues to be ignored when the powers that be speak of tourism in the town and the county). The action in the excellent John Mitchels complex gets underway with the home side taking on the Rebel Wheelers at 9.30am. The action continue all day with Shannonside Stealers taking on Killester WBC at 11.15, NI Knights versus Galway Titans at 1pm, Ballybrack Bulls and North East Thunder tip off at 2.45 and South East Swifts and Clonaslee WBC end the day’s action at 4.30. A great show of wheelchair basketball is in store for all those that pop in at some stage on Saturday.

AT THE TRACK

This Friday at the Kingdom Greyhound Stadium there are the semi-finals of the GMHD.ie Juvenile Classic plus the semifinals of the various 12 dog stakes sponsored by GMHD.ie that will be part of the finals night on Friday March 8th. Also on a busy Friday night is the Con and Annie Kirby Trial stake plus the KGOBA novice 750 yards. On Saturday night there are the semi-finals of the Kingdom Novice 525 yards while racing also takes place on Sunday evening with the first of the 8 races off at 6.35pm. The track is currently taking entries for the John and Mary Killeacle Dowling Memorial A1 current 570 yards starting on Friday March 22nd and the Coursing Bred Novice 325 yards starting on Saturday March 30th with entries to the racing office on 061 448057. There was plenty of Kerry success at the Irish Coursing Cup as the season came to an end. Silent Wonder’s win was the highlight of meeting at Greenmount Racecourse. WARRIORS RIGHT IN THE MIX: Garvey’s Tralee Warriors made the long trip to the North a winning one with an 80-68 point win over Belfast Star. The Warriors dominated at both ends of the court and opened with 14 unanswered points and led 28-17 at the end of the first quarter. They had opened up a lead of 20 points at the half 44-24 and were 62-44 up with just 10 minutes to play. And despite a short fight back the Warriors held on for a vital 12 point win that sees them in joint second place and right in the SuperLeague hunt. PRO Alan Cnatwell says that if they can overcome Maree in the Complex on Saturday night, at 7.30pm they will be looking at the other teams involved as they will be down to the last 5 games. “With Templeogue and UCD Marian also winning things are still very tight at the top of the table. The League leaders will take on Killester while UCD will be looking for bragging rights in the all colleges clash when the go to Cork to take on UCC Demons. The Warriors run-in will see them play at home to Templeogue and Neptune and away to Moycullen while they will also face home and away clashes with UCD.
