Catherine & Kiera... a Dip a Day for a month, supporting MS! Unfortunately , like many other worthy organisations , due to Covid , the Tralee/West Kerry local branch of MS have not had any major fundraising events in 2 years. “Now that life has gone back to someway normal , We are having a Dip a Day for the month of March. “ says Chairperson June Carey .” We are delighted that Committee member Catherine Dolan and her daughter Kiera will swim daily for the month.”

“There is a Go fund me page in place https://gofund.me/ a4265b62 where all donations are welcome. So please look this page up ! “ All funding for this branch is raised locally and despite the restraints of Covid we have still been able to provide vital support for our members including Physiotherapy, yoga and supplying personal assistance when needed.”

A Perfect match as Cara Credit Union sponsor Presentation Secondary School Tralee

Cara Credit Union are delighted to announce their Current Account with globally accepted Mastercard® Debit Card as the title sponsors of Tralee’s Presentation Secondary School’s football team .

This sponsorship compliments the Credit Union’s Current Account sponsorship of the LGFA’s All-Ireland Ladies Club Football Championships. This partnership will also sponsor the LGFA’s annual All-Ireland Club 7’s blitz day and National Volunteer awards. Mr. Daniel O’Ceallaigh, teacher and sports trainer at Presentation Secondary School, Tralee said: “We are delighted to welcome Cara Credit Union as title sponsor of our football team. The students were involved in designing the jerseys and kit as part of a whole school

competition. The school would like to thank Cara Credit Union for supporting sport and teams in the school in such a generous manner. Our teams will wear their new kit with pride.” Pa Laide CEO of Cara Credit Union, continues- “With the introduction of the Current Account and Mastercard Debit Card, members can now do all their day-to-day banking through their Credit Union while supporting in a practical way the growth of this much trusted communitybased service that is the Credit Union. Through this exciting sponsorship, we will also be supporting the continued development of sport in Presentation Secondary School, Tralee. The sponsorship reflects our commitment to supporting and strengthening local communities solely for the

benefit of the people living in these communities. Our members support, by way of loans and current accounts, allows us continue supporting our local communities of Tralee, Castleisland, Killorglin, Ballyduff and Causeway.” With the recent news of the

closures of branches of other financial institutions we are once again reminded of the importance of the Credit Union sector. Credit Unions, as established financially inclusive co-operatives, exist solely to meet the needs of their members.

OUR PROPERTY PAGE IN ASSOCIATION WITH TOMMY CARMODY’S PROPERTY HOUSE

Tommy’s current market outlook...

nd Killarney Unintended consequences of the Employment Wage Subsidy Scheme (EWSS)

The idea behind the EWSS was to ensure that employees whose employers were affected negatively due to Covid restrictions would be given the best chance of retaining their employment during Covid and ultimately continue in their posts once restrictions eased. The difficulty for the employees looking to buy a home however is that due to their employers being on the EWSS they are typically unable to draw down a mortgage until such time as their employers are removed from the EWSS.

end of December but the sale of these homes fell through when the scheme was extended as both parties mortgage approvals will have expired before the end of April and they will have to reapply again once their employers come off the EWSS. The consequence of this for both families is that prices have risen since they were sale agreed in November. One family have been told that they may not be approved again immediately as a mom will be on maternity leave come the end of April.

5:30pm-7:30pm 0am-2pm The end date for the EWSS has changed on several occasions and will now run until the end of April for most beneficiaries and until the end of May in certain cases.

In both cases I have been told by the applicants, who work in hospitality that they are now working longer hours and their income has drastically increased since restrictions have lifted. Therefore it is safe to assume that financially they are less of a risk to a bank now than when they were originally approved and that their employment is relatively sound. These hard working families should be allowed to draw down a mortgage and benefit from paying

a mortgage that is considerably less than what they are paying currently on rent. Another unintended consequence of blocking mortgage draw downs until the expiry of the EWSS is that there will be a very large number of mortgage approved, first time buyers being released to the market in a short timeframe and given the fact that many are in positions that pay similar salaries, they will be fighting for homes in a certain price bracket which will ultimately lead to bidding

wars and those concerned paying higher prices. It would be great to see action on this and measured introduced to allow mortgage draw downs prior to the cessation of the EWSS. We have reached out to councilors and ministers in the past on this and will continue to do so. Speak soon, hopefully.

A lot of people think that lasers take off the top layers of skin. This is not the case.Lasers generally penetrate the surface skin, stimulating the collagen from within and below and trigger collagen production. Our resurfacing lasers are fractional. Fractional Lasers break up the laser energy into thousands of tiny beams to treat only a fraction of the skin in the area, which reduces downtime. The skin will look pink and feel quite dry and the dryness can last up to 4-5 days . The amount of sessions will be addressed in your initial consultation. It will depend on your skin and results you want to achieve . It feels like an elastic band tipping on your skin. You will notice a difference in colour, tone, texture and fine lines and wrinkles . A lot of people see results after one session.

Dazzling New Venue at The Ashe Hotel

By Georgie Downes

Tralee is killing it these days with venues opening up left, right and centre, which is wonderful for tourists eager to experience all kinds of hot spots and great for locals too, who we know are always up for a good night out. The latest addition is Lottie’s, the freshly refurbished,

sumptuous eating space at the four-star Ashe Hotel. This place is simply gorgeous; somewhere Gatsby himself might choose to eat if he ever came to Tralee. The décor is decadent, sophisticated and chic, the perfect setting for watching the world go by as you lounge in one of

their velvet, scalloped chairs, sipping a cocktail created by mixologists Nicole Sugrue and Diana O’Keeffe who, incidentally, have designed a selection of their own original cocktails and mocktails especially for Lottie’s. Hotel Stylist Jane Boyle was the woman in charge of design and she’s pretty much nailed it. “We have created a special space for people to dine, celebrate and entertain, a room for a sense of occasion, to toast those beautiful moments in our lives.” Here, here. Lottie’s cater for such beautiful moments as weddings, christenings, anniversaries, baby showers, retirements and birthdays. Or a boy’s night out. Or indeed a girl’s night out. Everyone’s welcome. Naomi McDonnell, Operations Manager of Food and Beverage says, “We love

hosting celebrations, and being part of a family’s special occasion is such a privilege.” Keeping with the Twenties theme, give ‘The Birdcage’ a whirl (it looks like a periodpiece birdcage). This is the hands-on, dining experience ideal for sharing while you chat and catch up with friends. Each ‘Birdcage’ contains three layers of savoury nibbles, with ingredients specially sourced by Head Chef Alex DeGlorie who knows a thing or two about tempting platters. The ‘Birdcages’ launch on Friday 18th March, St. Patrick’s Bank Holiday weekend. Bookings are open and advisable.

Help is at hand with Here’s a date that vital exam revision! for your diary! It is that time of the year again when students have to get serious about their studies. Students who are preparing for Leaving and Junior Certificate have lots of revision to do over the next few months. At Brookfield Tuition help is at hand in the form of intensive One Day Intensive Revision Courses in the run up to and during the Easter break. According to Elisha Dowling “this is our 32nd year providing Easter Revision Courses and the experience we have built up is invaluable. Students are always amazed at the amount of quality revision we get done.” Early booking is advisable as places are limited. Phone 085-2648361 or Email: brookfieldtuition@gmail.com

Minister Foley confirms €10 million secured for UHK Oncology Project Minister for Education and Kerry TD Norma Foley welcomes the issuing of a letter of approval to University Hospital to confirm the €10 million extension and upgrade of the oncology ward. Minister for Health Stephen Donnelly confirmed to Minister Foley that a letter of approval has issued to UHK which greenlights the upgrade of oncology services at UHK. The €10 million investment will provide for a state of the art extension to the existing oncology day ward including funding to cover design, construction and equipment costs. The project brief includes the provision of 10 fully kitted out treatment pods, two treatment rooms, a chemotherapy day

unit and associated staff accommodation. Over the coming months it is expected that the project will progress through to detailed design stage to ensure that it will meet the needs of the population and be in line with the overall National Cancer Strategy. Minister Foley said: “Minister Donnelly has confirmed the allocation of approximately €10 million for this significant and much needed extension to oncology services at UHK. This vital funding will further enhance the provision of excellence in cancer treatment services in Kerry and the south west. This €10 million investment is an endorsement of the

combined efforts of staff and management of UHK and the tireless work of community volunteers most notably

Comfort for Chemo who have worked so hard to advance this project.”

Tralee Goes The Green Way For St. Patrick’s Day Parade The St Patrick’s Day Parade in Tralee this year has adopted the theme of ‘Let’s go the Green Way’ which will promote the upcoming completion of the Greenway from Tralee to Fenit while bringing awareness to sustainability and green initiatives. The parade will see close on fifty organisations, clubs, groups and businesses from the Tralee area take part. A digital online programme of events will be launched in the coming days which highlight key events and activities that will be taking place from the 17th to the 20th of March in the town. It was a bittersweet moment for Mayor of Tralee, Cllr. Johnnie Wall at the press launch for Tralee’s St. Patrick’ Day Festival Parade on Monday: “It’s been two years since we stood here for the 2020 Press launch, joking and laughing and looking forward to what was going to be my role as Grand Marshal for the Parade following many years as coordinator. A few hours later the parade was cancelled and the rest, as they say, is history”.

14

Friday 4th March 2022

Cllr. Wall went on the say: “I know I speak on behalf of all my fellow councillors and people of Tralee when I can officially offer an invite to Kerry members of the Little Blue Heroes organisation to be our Grand Marshals for the 2022 Parade. These are our honorary Gardaí who are coordinated locally by the fantastic team at the Garda station in Tralee.” Initiatives for the 2022 Parade will see Street Spectacle facilitator, Caoimhe Dunn present a Free Festival Hat Making Workshop at the Wetlands Centre on Saturday, 5th March, supported by Creative Ireland through Kerry County Council, and all Schools, Clubs and organisations are encouraged to register -https://forms.gle/ mGwGN6GZHL2zFwPc6 Another first for Tralee will be an initiative to support Tralee’s quest to become an Autism Friendly Town. With some great work already being achieved in this regard, the Parade will create a ‘Sensory

Street’ - a 100 meter section from Moyderwell School to Upper Castle Street where the Parade participants will shine bright with their lights but dim down with their sound. This area will be zoned for those individuals with sensory processing challenges along with their families to enjoy the parade in a supportive environment. https://www.facebook.com/ TraleeAutismFriendly/ The organising committee are also putting out a call to all local Business Owners and Managers to help the capital town roll out the Green Carpet by volunteering their time during the Parade to show both the public and the hundreds of people participating that their local

businesses also support this Civic Parade. The annual parade will depart from John Joe Sheehy Road and travel through Boherbee, Castle Street and down the Mall finishing at Bridge Street. Street Closures and Traffic restrictions will be in place from early morning. The town will host events pre and post parade such as street entertainment, amusements, Daredevil Circus and more. Tralee’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade is funded by the Community Support Fund and is an initiative of Kerry County Council Tralee Municipal District and Tralee Chamber Alliance with support from the business community of the town. HERE’S SOME GOOD ONE- LINERS!

I was having dinner with a world chess champion and there was a check tablecloth. It took them two hours to pass the salt. I cleaned the attic with the wife the other day. Now I can’t get the cobwebs out of her hair.

I sent my girlfriend a huge pile of snow. I rang her up and said: “Did you get my drift?” A jumplead walks into a bar. The barman says: “I’ll serve you, but don’t start anything.” Went to the doctors and said: “Have you got anything for wind?” He gave me a kite. “‘What’s a couple?’ I asked my mum. She said, ‘Two or three’. Which probably explains why her marriage collapsed.” – Josie Long

HEALTHY RECIPES for 2022

A GATHERING OF GOOD FRIENDS... ONCE AGAIN! Now that things are slowly resuming to like they were , way back in 2019... its great to see people socialising, calling in to see one another and dare I say it... a little bit of home entertaining! Nothing could be better than a small gathering of friends, good food and a nice glass of wine (or two!) Heres a tasty little Italian dish thats just perfect for such an occasion! A tasty Italian flatbread thats so versatile on that small buffet table.

Piadina (Italian Flatbread) Makes 12 INGREDIENTS • • • • • • •

14 ounces white whole-wheat flour 4.5 oumces cup semola rimacinata flour plus more for work surface ¼ cup extra-virgin olive oil, plus more for greasing, brushing, and, if desired, serving 2oz sourdough starter discard 1 tablespoon plus 1 tsp. flaky sea salt 1 ½ cups warm water Ghee or thinly sliced guanciale, for serving (optional)

METHOD Stir together white whole-wheat flour and semola flour in a large bowl. Drizzle with oil; using your fingers, rub oil into flour mixture until evenly combined and any beads of oil are dispersed, 3 to 5 minutes. Add sourdough starter and salt. Pour 1 1/2 cups warm water over mixture. Form your hand into the shape of a hook, and mix dough until dough is smooth and all dry ingredients are incorporated, about 2 minutes. Cover bowl with a clean towel, and let dough rest 20 minutes. Uncover bowl. Using wet hands to prevent dough from sticking, stretch and fold dough over itself in bowl until it feels tight and elastic (a sign that the gluten is well developed), 4 to 6 minutes. If dough starts to tear, stop stretching, and let rest 2 minutes before resuming. Cover bowl with a clean towel, and let dough rest until relaxed and risen slightly, 2 to 3 hours. Turn dough out onto a clean work surface. Divide evenly into 12 pieces (about 2 7/8 ounces each). To shape each dough piece, form a claw with your hand, and rotate it in a circle, gently pressing down on top of the dough piece. The dough will pull across the unfloured surface and form a tight ball. Arrange dough balls, evenly spaced, in a lightly greased (with oil) 13- x 9-inch baking pan. Cover pan tightly with plastic wrap. Chill at least 24 hours or up to 48 hours. (Chilling for an extra day gives the flatbread a more complex flavor.) Remove dough from fridge. Let stand in baking pan at room temperature until dough is relaxed and no longer cool to the touch, 1 to 2 hours. Working with 1 dough ball at a time and keeping remaining dough balls covered in pan, transfer dough ball to a lightly floured (with semola flour) surface. Dust top of ball with semola flour. Using the palm of your hand, flatten ball slightly; using your fingertips, stretch it into a 5-inch disk. Using a rolling pin, start from center of disk and roll outward, rotating disk often, to form a 7 1/2-inch round, dusting with flour as needed to prevent sticking. Heat a large cast-iron pan over medium. Lightly brush with oil. Toss dough round gently between your hands to stretch it into an 8-inch round, and carefully place dough round in preheated pan. Cook until dough puffs up (in 1 large bubble or several small bubbles) and bottom is covered in a leopard pattern of golden spots, 2 to 3 minutes. Flip and cook until dough is cooked through and speckled on both sides, about 2 minutes. Remove from pan, and brush both sides lightly with oil. Keep warm in a folded towel. Repeat process with remaining dough balls, wiping pan clean and brushing with oil between flatbreads. Serve warm

A run of five points without reply at the start of second half put Kerry in control of the game. Kerry will face Meath this Sunday in Tralee with a 2pm throw-in. The Kerry Ladies got off to the perfect start with a goal from Louise Ni Mhuircheartaigh in their rearranged game away to Clare. In the end Kerry won 1-13 to 0-09.

The club is delighted to be able to provide the team with a lot more game time. A win by Tottenham Hotspur meant Mike Roger O’Sullivan won the Last Man Standing from the four who were still involved before last weekend’s games. The club was delighted to see its players in the Kerry jersey for the win against Carlow and will be supporting them when the hurlers take on Meath this Sunday.

CLANMAURICE READY FOR ALL IRELAND FINAL: The Clanmaurice girls are in their third AIB All Ireland Junior Camogie Club Championship in a row but they were pushed all the way by the holders Raharney in the semi-final. The Kerry side won 0-10 to 1-05 in tough conditions. The teams had met six weeks ago in the delayed 2020 final where the Westmeath side just took a narrow win. In the final this Saturday they take on Eoghan Rua from Derry with the game fixed for O’Raghallaighs GAA club in Drogheda. The club has organised a supporter’s bus for those wishing to travel. Everyone is behind this side that continue to fly the flag the Kerry flag high.

AUSTIN STACKS JUVENILE NEWS: The club is looking for participants in all categories of Scor competitions ahead of the Kerry finals of Scor na nOg on Saturday March 19th. with “The Voice” Pat Harnett

FAI NATIONAl P.R.O. OF THE YEAR OPENING COLUMN FOR MARCH JOY AND HEARTBREAK FOR GAELCHOLAISTE CHIARRAI There was joy for the Tralee school as they were crowned the All Ireland u19B Schools League champions. They were comprehensive winners over their Mayo opposition St Loius CS Kiltimagh winning 63-40. Gaelcholaiste started the better but their opponents had a big second quarter to cut the gap to just three at the break 2825. A strong third quarter saw the Tralee girls up by 13 and they pushed on in the final quarter. US college bound Paris McCarthy had a huge game ending with a huge 36 points and a well-deserved MVP award. Rachel Ni Chriodain hit three big threes for an 11 point haul. And they came with a point of a double win as they lost out the u16B Schools League final going down to IS Killorglin in an all Kerry final. The game was very tight throughout with the Gaelcholaiste leading 22-19 at the half. With just the final quarter to play the sides were level at 32 points each. But in the end IS Killorglin took the win 41-40. Rachel Ni Chriodain had a busy day and top scored for her side in this game with 14 points followed by Sorcha Ni Cathasaigh on 13 and Sarah Ni Scannlain on 7. SPORTS CLUB INVITED TO TAKE PART IN THE ST PATRICK’S DAY PARADE: Following the Covid related cancellation of the last two St Patrick’s Day Parades there is no doubt this year’s event will be greatly celebrated. The Tralee parade has the theme of ‘Let Go the Green Way’ bringing awareness to sustainability and green initiatives as well as promoting the eagerly awaited Tralee Fenit Greenway. Many of the town’s sports clubs will be part of the 50 plus participants that will begin on the John Joe Sheehy Road and finish on Bridge Street. One very worthy initiative is the continuation of Tralee’s quest to become an Autism Friendly Town with a Sensory Street – a 100m section from Moyderwell School to Upper Castle Street where participants will turn down their sound while shining their lights brightly. TRIPLE DELIGHT FOR KERRY: It was a good weekend on the GAA front with the footballers putting in a very good display away to Monaghan and also managing to put doubt into the new tactic that’s coming into football – the roving goalkeeper who now plays in goal, sweeper and even further out the field. And when Rory Beggan was turned over in possession it ended up with David Clifford getting his second goal. Kerry will next face Mayo in a top of the table clash that will bring another sold-out crowd to Tralee. Well done to Tadgh Morley, Diarmuid O’Connor and David Clifford who were named

In the Spring League Round 2 Bernie O’Loughlin took the win from Angela Enright. PITCH & PUTT NOTES: Last Saturday saw Pitch & Putt Ireland host its first in-person Convention in two years at Templemore in County Tipperary. Deepark’s Damien Fleming received his Irish Mens No 1 ranking awards for the years of 2020 and 2021 at the event as in a nice gesture in his acceptance speech he dedicated his 2021 award to the memory of the late Tim Scannell from Tralee. The Tralee Pitch & Putt Club chairman passed away back in early January having previous served as Competition Secretary and PRO at County Board level. His loss is still felt by many within the game in the county. Saturday also saw Deerpark’s Ger O’Connor step down as Technical Officer with the National Executive after six years in the role. His club-mate Jason O’Connor will remain on as Pitch & Putt Ireland’s Communications & Press Officer for a ninth year in 2022. Saturday’s Convention also saw Mark Keohane from the Rocklodge club in Cork succeed Mervyn Cooney of St Patricks in Enniscorthy as President after he won a ballot with Westmeath’s Davy Reddin for the position by 56 votes to 31. It will be April before competitive action begins in earnest in the county as the focus will be on course preparation in the county over the coming month of March.
