LEGAL MATTERS CORNER MIRIAM MC GILLICUDDY ANSWERS YOUR LEGAL QUERIES
Simon was the subject of a derogatory post on a social media site where the author wrote that Simon was a person no one should have dealings with and that he had conned the author out of money. Simon runs a very successful car dealership and has very good customer relations policy. The particular individual Tom who put up the post worked for the company but had left the company rather abruptly after he was warned about abusive behaviour in the workplace. What can Simon do about this. He only discovered the post because a friend told him about it. Abusive comment of this nature can be very damaging on a personal level but if it relates to a business there can be significant real or potential financial loss resulting therefrom. Firstly Simon needs to get a copy of the post so that he knows what he is dealing with. If he can get a screenshot he should report it to the social media site and ensure that the offending post is taken down. He could sue for defamation of his character. A Defamatory statement could be oral or in writing. It can be visual images, sounds, gestures and any other method of signifying meaning, broadcast on radio/TV, internet or a form of electronic communication. To be defamatory the statement must be one that tends to injure a person’s reputation in the eyes of reasonable members of society. There are a number of defences to a defamation action including truth, absolute privilege e.g. statements in Court or the Dail, Qualified privilege ( where it is to someone one has a duty to report to), fair and reasonable publication as a matter of public interest, honest opinion amongst others. It is unlikely that any defence would apply here unless there was some specific incident that Tom could point to which Simon says there categorically was no such incident. The problem here is that Simon could take an expensive defamation case and if Tom has no money he may not be able to pay the damages. This is why it is so important Simon can approach the publisher which is the social media site. If the social media site does not take the defamatory statement down then they could be liable to be sued in defamation along with Tom and at least they would be a target for damages. Having said all that it is important that laws are brought into effect to ensure that damaging material online is removed by the hosting site as soon as possible. It is proposed to bring in a law to this effect with criminal implications also which will be a relief to people who may be the subject matter of abusive comment online. Law Quip: “Character is like a tree and reputation like a shadow. The shadow is what we think of it; the tree is the real thing.” - Abraham Lincoln If you have a legal query or need further information on any item addressed in this column please send in your query to miriam.mcgillycuddy@gmail.com Miriam McGillycuddy, Solicitor, Derryana, Ballyard, Tralee, County Kerry. Medical Matters WHY NOT TRY TO GIVE UP ALCOHOL FOR LENT? DR DAVID BUCKLEY Why does almost every social occasion in Ireland revolve around alcohol? It seems you cannot be born, die or win or lose a match without alcohol being involved. At least this is what the drinks industry wants us to believe. However it does not always have to be that way. It is possible to enjoy yourself without alcohol. Try it sometime – you might be surprised. Set yourself a challenge of giving up alcohol for Lent. At first you might find it difficult, but after a few weeks you should find you can often have as much fun (perhaps more) without alcohol at a party, a wedding or after a match. No more hangovers, you can drive home and you might even save some money. There are lots of health benefits to abstaining from alcohol for a few weeks over lent. It should help with your weight, cholesterol, blood pressure, blood sugar and your mental health. Alcohol is a depressant.
It can also disrupt your sleep leading to even more mental health issues such as irritability, anxiety and depression. Abstaining from alcohol for lent should increase your energy, your concentration and your mood. It can reduce your chance of developing liver disease and you skin will look less red, puffy and dull. If you are a parent it might help your children to see you having some fun and enjoying life without alcohol. Lead by example, not by words. There is the misconception that a person who doesn’t drink must be boring. However, you may find yourself more alert and less likely to make a fool out of yourself. Giving up alcohol doesn’t mean giving up your social life. Try a non alcoholic beer or a soft drink in a long glass and your friends may not even notice you are not drinking until you offer them a lift home.
Initially this may seem liberating as you can become less shy and perhaps “merry”. However too much alcohol can depress your mood and make you feel low and guilty the following day.

BIG RED BEAST - THE WINE LEGEND
'It is BIG. It is certainly RED. And it is definitely a BEAST. A big and bold red blend that is ridiculously good value for money at €10. Big spicy nose with some mineral qualities are present too. There is also a bit of mint (or menthol) on the nose. So hot and cold. Sweet and sour. The palate is bursting with blackberries, black cherries and heavily spiced plums. Thick and rich as chocolate cake, but with a clean and refined finish that gives you some good toasty but also spicy oak. Brilliant!' * You will find it in Carry Out Tralee & Ardfert

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... Two Grand Marshals to lead Tralee St Patrick’s Day Parade - Anthony O’Gara and Ryan Kelliher THE organisers of the 2019 St Patrick’s Day Parade in Tralee have announced that not one, but two people will act as Grand Marshals for this year’s national holiday celebration in Kerry’s Capital town. 60 years of the Rose of Tralee International Festival in 2019 will be recognised through the participation of the event’s Executive Chair, Anthony O’Gara, who will be joined by 8-year-old Ryan Kelliher, a young muscular dystrophy patient from Tralee. The Chairperson of the Tralee St Patrick’s Day Parade Organising Team, Johnnie Wall, said: “The Rose of Tralee International Festival is the most important tourism event in the county. It’s on our doorstep and should be acknowledged and appreciated for the economic benefits it brings to Tralee every August.” Anthony will be joined in the parade by young Tralee boy Ryan Kelliher, who has Muscular Dystrophy. Ryan attends Scoil Eoin in Balloonagh, he loves science and soldiers and he’s due to make his First Holy Communion in May.
Janene Kelleher said her son is very excited about being in the St Patrick’s Day Parade: “Ryan has been beaming from ear-to-ear since being invited to take part in the St Patrick’s Day Parade in Tralee. He has been a wheelchair user since he was five and he now finds it difficult to participate in certain activities with his friends. Ryan spends lots of time in hospital over the course of the year and it means so much to him to be included in activities such as this. It can be disappointing when he can’t do some of the things his friends can do, but he never complains, and he tries twice as hard to achieve his goals.” This year’s parade will start at John Joe Sheehy Road and will continue through Boherbee, Castle Street onto The Mall and finishing in The Square. A number of road closures will be in place from 10.30am on the morning of the parade and motorists and pedestrians are requested to follow the guidance of the volunteer stewards. Entry forms are now available from Kerry County Council Offices in Rathass and Princes
Quay and from the Tralee St Patrick’s Day Parade Facebook Page. All groups/individuals wishing to participate in the St Patrick’s Day Community Parade, must complete and return the entry form as soon as possible to St Patrick’s Day Parade, c/o Kerry County Council, Tralee Municipal District, Princes Quay, Tralee or email to johnniewall@ eircom.net. Once all the applications have been received, each participant will be given a slot number and the numbers will be displayed along the
assembly area at the starting line. Kerry County Council, through the Community Support Fund, is the main sponsor of the Tralee St Patrick’s Day Parade. For more information, contact Johnnie Wall on 087 2335846. WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... CH To Invest €1.5 Million In Tralee Store CH one of Tralee’s bestrecognised retailers for over 50 years is about to undertake a major renovation of its store located at 31 The Mall, Tralee. The award-winning independent retailer whose store includes a pharmacy, opticians, beauty salon, photo services, cosmetics, fragrance and gift hall will this week begin work on a 1.5 million euro revamp of the iconic local business. One of the world’s leading retail design agencies Dalziel and Pow of London have been commissioned to redesign CH and to create the most memorable shopping experience for their valued loyal customers. Local construction contractor Ned O’ Shea & Sons and a number of local service providers have already begun on the redevelopment with works due for completion this summer. Although major works will take place customers can be assured that CH will continue to trade in town over the coming months. Some services including the opticians and pharmacy will remain open on site and other services such as beauty and cosmetics will temporarily relocate to three separate
units on Abbey court just off the Square, Tralee. In terms of what we can expect from the new store, Peter Harty comments: “It’s been over 50 years since our foundation and we want to take this opportunity to honour the legacy of our parents and to reposition the business for the future. We have asked the design team to integrate world leading design into a truly memorable shopping experience to show every customer that they matter hugely to us. We’d like to thank you for being part of our continuing journey and your loyalty to CH encourages us to be forward thinking, innovative and to offer the best possible customer experience. “ “Our amazing team here at CH are working hard to ensure that we continue to offer all our services during the transition and I thank them for their unwavering support. We will shortly relocate our cosmetics, beauty and hair
departments temporarily to units 3, 4 and 11 in Abbey court, Tralee from mid-March with our opticians, pharmacy and photo services remaining open in the Mall with access from Milk Market Lane. We are very excited about our plans and look forward to the new CH experience here in the heart of Tralee town.” This will be the fourth time that the Harty family have significantly reinvested in CH which was originally founded by Fionan Harty and Patricia Chute back in 1968. Fionan and Patricia married in 1964 and took over Chutes Chemist four years later from Patricia’s parents. Fionan and Patricia decided to call their
new pharmacy CH, after both surnames. The last 20 years has seen the business enter the third family generation by a son and daughter alliance, Peter and Claire Harty, Peter a qualified Pharmacist and Claire an Opthalamic Optician. CH has now a dedicated and hardworking staff of over seventy people. Photo . JRI America’s Foodie Friday a big hit with staff and local business! 60 lunches sold in half an hour – sushi, tapas, paella, pizza – this is not in a busy city restaurant but it’s actually how quickly the grub has been selling on Foodie Fridays at JRI America in Tralee. The initiative at the Kerry Technology Park-based company has been a great success since it began last December, creating awareness among staff of the magnificent local food producers and providers in the county. The events are designed to highlight one food producer each week, which enables both commercial success and excellent promotion opportunities. Foodie Friday was the brainchild of JRI America’s in-house food-lover Anluan Dunne: “I have a personal interest in maintaining high quality food in Tralee, while 14

I believe the introduction of Foodie Friday adds another layer of attractiveness to working at JRI America in Tralee. Kerry Technology Park is a great place to work but can be a little lacking for food options. Everyone has embraced the idea, it generates plenty of chat and suggestions as to what will be next on the menu.” John Dough’s Donut, Coffee, Pizza and Ice Cream Shop Tralee was the first local vendor to satisfy the taste buds of the JRI America staff last December. The proprietor of John Dough’s, John McCarthy, said: “This is an ingenious idea for people who work in technology parks like this that are slightly cut-off from the town centre, or without canteen facilities. JRI America are the pioneers in Tralee but there is no reason Friday 8th March 2019
why others can’t introduce the same as it’s a nice treat for people to have access to a high standard of food at work.”
The concept has proved to be so popular with local producers that upcoming Friday slots are filling fast. Local producers are encouraged to contact JRI America to get involved. At present, Foodie Friday is exclusively for JRI America, but with around 600 people employed in the Kerry Technology Park, other companies may consider introducing the service to their
own premises in due course. Any local food producers or providers who would like to be considered for inclusion in the Foodie Friday at JRI America can contact info@jri-america. com.

What have other said about the events
Chris Grayson athlete and Pacer Having been a pacer now for a number of years it continues to be my favourite pastime....I absolutely love having the Craic with fellow athletes and helping them achieve their goals getting PB’s ...Looking forward to Paddy’s weekend where myself, Fozzy Forristal (#teamgrozzy) and my team of pacers will be raring to go in this fantastic sporting occasion....It’s a great honour and a privilege to be pacing in this wonderful race and roll on the 16th March...It can’t come quick enough!!! Gonna be EPIC ...#loveoursport #pacedarace John Collins, Athlete and Parent This hopefully will be my 4th time running at the Tralee marathon weekend - full once and this year will be my 3rd time running the half. A home race for anybody is always that little bit special, not to mention the convenience of sleeping in your own bed the night before, no travel,
Friday 8th March 2019
familiarity with course, etc! One of my best memories of any race I have taken part in was running the last mile of the full 2 years ago with my son Jack and crossing the finish line with all of my kids in tow! The present route is a favourite of mine - there are a few hills but nothing too severe. I also have good memories of last year’s half as it was my first time under 1hour30 for a half marathon. The Tralee half in my experience is always a well organised, well marshalled event, complete with quality pacers who will always do their level best to assist you in reaching your goals.
An important aspect of the Tralee marathon series is that all profits go back into the local athletics club, Tralee Harriers. As a parent of a competing athlete I can see firsthand the benefits of investments the club are making as a result of successful events - the past 3 years alone that my son has been involved has seen the installation of flood lights at the club grounds, the first phase of the new tartan track and constant investments in coaching and equipment. There is a lot more work to be done and events such as the marathon weekend are the lifeblood of the club. Seamus Falvey, Athlete and Parent My three girls Rebecca (15), Laura (11) and Ashlyn (9) are currently members of Tralee Harriers Athletic Club. The voluntary led club has made a massive difference to their lives both from a fitness point of view and their overall personal development. As we know it can be very hard to keep young girls involved in physical fitness and activities but
Tralee Harriers have a proven track record in this area. Right from the age of 7 to senior years Boys and Girls receive top class coaching and encouragement to both participate and excel at County, Munster, National and even International level with athletes treated equally regardless of ability. The confidence and self-belief that is instilled in each member of the club is very evident and will only get better should the plans and ambitions of the club`s hardworking committee be realised. The club is based opposite the Rose hotel in a field which was once the home of my childhood club St. Johns AC, already Harriers have managed to install a modern 4 lane 100m track, long jump pit, shot putt and javelin areas. The club hope to have a complete track in the next few years which is why fundraising events such as the Half marathon and 10km run on St. Patricks weekend is vitally important and should be supported by every Man, Woman and Child in Kerry. Our girls have been involved in many great athletic events which has seen them travel the length and breadth of the country from Castleisland to Athlone and beyond, the ambition and drive of the members of Tralee Harriers supporting our children leads me to firmly believe we will have a top class Athletics facility in Tralee in the not too distant future and who knows I might even be tempted to put back on my own spikes again too!!!
Best of luck to Tralee Harriers, we can’t thank you enough for all you’ve done for us and Roll on March 16th.

Bexblah Beauty HELLO BEAUTIFUL PEOPLE! I HOPE YOU’RE ALL HAVING AN AMAZING WEEK!
IT’S INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY! This week I want you to celebrate International Women’s Day. Talk about it to your friends, peers & family. Talk about what being a woman means to you & encourage others to do the same. If nothing else, treat yourself this week. Celebrate being a strong woman. Instead of trying to do things for everyone else, this week do something for yourself. Here’s a little list to help you!
SKINCARE
When my skin feels good I feel better about myself. This week I treated myself to a facial and oh my god it was the best things I’ve done for myself in months. Google some DIY Facemasks if you don’t have extra cash for a facial. (But I highly recommend a facial)
you want to use a salon hair mask I 100% recommend Redken or Kerastase, or again, you can go DIY and use some good old fashioned Coconut Oil.
DO SOME EXERCISE
It has been proven that exercise makes you feel amazing as it releases happy hormones. What better way to make yourself feel strong than working on number one, YOU!
DO SOMETHING JUST FOR YOU
Whether it’s learning a new skill, reading a book, or working on a project you’ve wanted to start for AGES, doing something just for you is a sure way to make you feel relaxed and give yourself some me time.
GET A NEW PAIR OF PJS
This is one of my absolute favourite things to do if I feel crappy. Head into Pennys, grab yourself a new pajama set complete with fluffy socks, go home and just CHILL! My favorite.
PAINT YOUR NAILS/ GET THEM DONE
I don’t know about you, but when my nails look fab I feel fab! Because I wasn’t blessed with the gift of being able to make my nails look in any way decent, I get mine done. But if you can paint your nails without them looking like a three year old did them, by all means do that!
DO A HAIR MASK
When I have a good hair day I feel a million times better! I love putting a hair mask in my hair for that extra softness and shine. If

BEXBLAH
FITNESS!
HELLO STRONG PEOPLE!
I hope you’re all having a great week. This week I’m going to talk about having a healthy relationship with food. A healthy relationship with food is actually something that few people have. Growing up I was never happy with my body really, I was always on some form of ‘diet’, I would fluctuate loads! I thought of certain foods as ‘good’ and ‘bad’. I had a bad relationship with food. Now, I’m pretty certain in saying I have a good relationship with food - no foods are ‘banned’ from my meals, I know what foods to eat in order to fuel my body properly and I don’t see any food as ‘good’ or ‘bad’. Because I love going to the gym and working out, I know what kinds of foods will fuel my body so that I can have the most energy possible and benefit from my workouts. If I really feel like a certain food - I have it. Simple as. But I didn’t just wake up one day and have this mindset and attitude, a few years ago I was eating whatever I felt like too - but my meals consisted mostly of dominos, chinese, chocolate, high calorie, low nutrition, high sugar, high salt foods. It’s a process. I first had to learn all about food and nutrition and what nutrients and macros your body needs. There was a period when I first started to get myself together that if I felt like a certain food I didn’t eat it, because I had to get my nutrition right first.
So I get it, you can’t just ‘eat what you want’ - because some days we all just want to comfort eat, and that’s not beneficial either. I guess that having a good relationship with food is eating what you know your body needs, but not depriving yourself either. • BREAD IS NOT BAD • CARBS ARE NOT BAD • FAT IS NOT BAD • CHOCOLATE IS NOT BAD
TRALEE ADVERTISER
Hope you have a great week and I’ll be back next week with some more fitness related goodness!
All of the above foods won’t ‘make you fat’ unless you eat them in excess amounts, but that applies to every food. If you’re doing a certain diet at the moment for a ‘quick fix’ or ‘fast results’ - sorry, but you do not have a good relationship with food. These diets may provide quick weight loss, but what you might not realise is, that weight is mostly made up of muscle and water weight - not actually fat. Those diets also totally mess up your metabolism and therefore when you go back to ‘eating normal’ you will put on weight quicker than before. It’s a vicious cycle. If you feel like you’re a bit lost when it comes to nutrition and food, or that you have a bad relationship with food, don’t fret. Get yourself in contact with a reputable nutritionist, or a personal trainer who is qualified to give nutritional advice (some are not). I personally recommend Recalibrated Bodies for nutritional plans, they are amazing. Both Amanda & Daniel have so
You can find me on Facebook ‘Bexblah Makeup’ or Instagram ‘Bexblah’. 24
much knowledge on all things food and nutrition. If buying a nutritional plan isn’t in your budget right now, even follow them on Snapchat - @recalibratedb Facebook - Recalibrated Bodies or Instagram @ recalibratedbodies - they’re always giving out amazing free information!

HEALTHY RECIPES for 2019
Its always time for Chocolate!
It’s Sunday afternoon and it’s snowing and I need something sweet for a party, but easy to eat, bite size so enter Brigadeiros. If you don’t know what a Brigadeiro is yet, you might be dying to find out. Well... Brigadeiros are bite-size chocolate sweets. Some people say they are bon-bons, other people say they are truffles... I think they come closer to fudge balls.
TRADITIONAL BRIGADEIROS
(BRAZILIAN FUDGE BALLS)
INGREDIENTS • • • • • •
Makes 2 dozen 1 (14oz) can sweet condensed milk 4 Tbsp cocoa powder, sifted 2 Tbsp butter, plus more for rolling balls A pinch of salt Good quality chocolate sprinkles (or any other type of sprinkles you like)
METHOD In a small sauce pan mix the sweet condensed milk, the cocoa powder, the salt and the butter. Bring the sauce pan to the stove and heat it over medium-low heat. Cook it, mixing constantly (this is important, otherwise it will burn!) until it thickens. A way to know is to run your wooden spoon (or spatula) in the middle of the mixture. If it takes a while for the mixture to move, then your brigadeiro is ready! Reserve, letting it cool to room temperature. In a plate or bowl, spread your sprinkles. Once the brigadeiro is cool, grease your hands with butter and roll the brigadeiros into little balls. (In Brazil we usually use half a tablespoon as measurement, but you can make your balls as big or small as you’d like!) Roll the brigadeiro balls into the sprinkles and place them in paper/foil candy cups.
Let me know if you enjoyed them and we will continue our healthy eating next week and remember to send your quetions to: askchefnoel@hotmail.com

A secret service agent, new on the job, shouts “Mickey Mouse!” This startles the would be assassin and he is captured. Later, the secret service agent’s supervisor takes him aside and asks, “What in the hell made you shout ‘Mickey Mouse’?” Blushing, the agent replies, “I got nervous. I meant to shout...... “Donald duck.”
SO THE CONDUCTOR GOES CRAZY WHEN ONE OF THE MUSICIANS HITS A WRONG NOTE and jumped down and stabs him with his baton killing him. He’s given the death penalty. For his last meal he wants a dozen bananas. They hit the switch on the electric chair and nothing happens. They explain that they have to let him go free. He gets his job back at the orchestra and the next performance kills another band member for screwing up. Back to prison and the electric chair. He again requests a dozen bananas for his last meal. When they hit the switch, like before, nothing happens. Before letting him go they ask if it has something to do with the bananas. No, he replies, I’m just a bad conductor.

ANGRY PREACHER A Irish man is stumbling through the woods, a little worse for wear , when he comes upon a preacher baptizing people in the river. He proceeds into the water, subsequently bumping into the preacher. The preacher turns around and is almost overcome by the smell of alcohol, whereupon, he asks the man , “Are you ready to find Jesus?” The man shouts, “Yes, I am.” So the preacher grabs him and dunks him in the water. He pulls him back and asks, “Brother, have you found Jesus?” The man replies, “No, I haven’t found Jesus!” The preacher, shocked at the answer, dunks him again but for a little longer. He again pulls him out of the water and asks, “Have you found Jesus, brother?” The man answers, “No, I haven’t found Jesus!” By this time, the preacher is at his wits end and dunks the man again – but this time holds him down for about 30 seconds, and when he begins kicking his arms and legs about, he pulls him up. The preacher again asks the man , “For the love of God, have you found Jesus?” The man staggers upright, wipes his eyes, coughs up a bit of water, catches his breath, and says to the preacher, “Are you sure this is where he fell in?”

TORQUING CARS! SURGE IN ELECTRIC CAR SALES IN 2019
SALES of electric cars in the first two months of the year has almost reached the total number sold for all of 2018, new figures reveal. The Society of the Irish Motor Industry (SIMI) has reported that 1,129 electric cars have been registered in January and February. That compares to total sales of 1,233 for all of last year and is a 542pc increase in the numbers bought in the first two months of 2018.The sale of electric vehicles is bucking the trend elsewhere in the market where new car registrations are down 12.2pc over the same period last year.Environment minister Richard Bruton said the record growth in electric vehicles being sold demonstrates “the willingness of Irish consumers to embrace the change to a low carbon future.”Mr Bruton said the government has introduced a range of incentives supporting the purchase of electric vehicles and invested of €10m in a significant expansion of the public charging network. He added: “The environmental benefits, longer range and low running costs of modern electric vehicles make them a viable option for all consumers.” He encouraged people buying a new car to “to play their part in making Ireland a climate leader and choose to drive electric.”
A MILLION GREEN CARDS NEEDED FOR MOTORISTS FOR TRAVEL TO NORTH
Motorists have been urged to contact their insurers as more than one million green cards are expected to be issued so drivers can cross the Border after Brexit. Transport Minister Shane Ross said he expects insurance companies to issue the cards from next week. He said the cards should be issued unprompted, but motorists who regularly drive in the Border region have been urged to contact their insurer immediately to get one. The Motor Insurers’ Bureau of Ireland (MIBI) has said green cards will have to be carried by motorists in Irish-registered vehicles travelling to the UK, including to Northern Ireland, as proof of insurance. Mr Ross said this was not a move the Government wanted to see. “As part of its contingency planning, the Government has raised this matter directly with the European Commission seeking agreement from it to set a date from which green cards would not be required as is possible under the EU’s Motor Insurance Directive.
I BOUGHT MY FIRST CORTINA FOR £611’ - FORD FAN WILLIAM (89) PICKS UP HIS 27TH NEW MODEL SINCE 1964
Customer loyalty knows no bounds with William Magahran. The 89-year-old Dubliner has just picked up his latest Ford. That makes it 27 - yes, 27 - wearing the blue oval badge that he has bought since his first purchase back in 1964.It is an unbelievable sequence of buying, ownership and loyalty. But as a way of, maybe partially, explaining such devotion to the marque, consider the fact that his late father drove a total of 25 Ford cars and vans in his time. And it doesn’t end there. The generation Ford-buying game continues apace with William’s daughter Helen. She is already on her eleventh Ford model. It is, by any measure, an extraordinary level of buying by one family.William lives in Templeogue, Dublin and is a familiar sight at Rathfarnham Ford’s new showroom on Whitechurch Road. This time around he was in to collect his 191-reg Fiesta. The 89-year-old has been buying his cars from Rathfarnham Ford’s Aidan Kane for several decades now.William says: “I like cars and I change them every other year.”A former sales rep for the Leinster and Munster area, he adds: “I always got good service from Ford and there’s always a dealer around the corner.”He had a particular “affection” for the Mondeo. So much so he was among the first to drive one here when the car launched in the 1990s.Interestingly, he has a trusty little notebook in which he has carefully documented details of all the cars he has bought - with their prices. That list begins with the Cortina he purchased in 1964.Its registration number was FZH 125. And he paid the princely sum of £611 for the privilege of owning it. That is a long way from the current new Fiesta he’s just bought -For the record . . . William’s cars to date have included the Cortina, Sierra, Mondeo, Focus and Fiesta.(INDO MOTORING )
CAR ADVICE WITH HONEST JOHN – YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED CHEMICAL BOTHERS
We have owned our Citroën C4 Picasso from new in 2007. It has been regularly serviced and has done nearly 80,000 miles. Recently, the engine warning light came on intermittently. The RAC and our local independent service garage ran a computer test but can find nothing wrong. Is it dangerous to drive in this condition? My husband reports a sense of reduced power when it happens. BH HJ Says ,, I’m guessing it’s a diesel and I think the reason for the light is a clogged particulate filter. www.ceramex.com might be able to clean it out chemically.

TALKING SPORT WITH THE TRALEE ADVERTISER EVERYTHING’S COMING UP ROSES!
with “The Voice” Pat Harnett
FAI NATIONAl P.R.O. OF THE YEAR ANOTHER HUGE WEEKEND OF SPORT: ALL TICKET FOR BASKETBALL’S BIGGEST CLASH OF THE YEAR: Garvey’s Tralee Warriors Super League showdown with Templeogue at the Tralee Sports Complex on Saturday night is an all ticket affair. The highly anticipated clash between two of the League’s heavyweights could potentially decide the outcome of the title and is shaping up as the biggest game of the season for both teams. Warriors Club Chairman Terry O’Brien says the massive interest in the game and the significance of the outcome prompted the move to make the fixture ticket only; “This is the biggest game in the Super League this season and we want to ensure that as many people as possible can come along and support the Warriors in their bid for glory. Our season ticket holders will be admitted by presenting their season ticket in the usual way. By selling the rest of the tickets in advance we can ensure our fans get to enjoy the game of the season.” Tickets have been on sale in Garvey’s during the week so hopefully if you want to go there are still some available. Season ticket holders will gain admission by presenting their season ticket at the Complex on Saturday night as usual. Templeogue lead the competition on 39 points with four losses to date. The Warriors are currently in second place on 33 points and have also lost just four games. They are level on points with UCD Marian but ahead of them by virtue of points difference. The Tralee side have two games in hand on the League leaders and a game in hand on UCD Marian so still have their destiny in their own hands. A win for the Warriors on Saturday night would see them cut the gap on Templeogue to three points and in turn move three points clear of UCD Marian. After that if they were to win their four remaining games they would win the League. As if the situation needed any more intrigue, the Warriors final two League fixtures are a double header against UCD Marian, away in Belfield at 5.00pm on Saturday 23rd, and at home in the Complex 24 hours later. However defeat to Templeogue on Saturday night would see the Dublin side move into prime position to seal the League title by winning their remaining games away to UCC Demons and Moycullen.

Doors open at the Tralee Sports Complex at 6.15pm for the game on Saturday night. Tip- off is at 7.30pm. And the Warriors set up this clash with a very impressive 88-70 point win over Maree. The home side were dominant under both boards and controlled the game. Again defensively they were very impressive restricting their opposition to just 26 points from 20 minutes play. Top scorers for the Warriors were Paul Dick 26, Eoin Quigley 23 and Kendall Williams 16. DOUBLE DELIGHT FOR WARRIORS When the Basketball Ireland Players and Coaches of the Month for February were announced there was double delight for Garvey’s Tralee Warriors. Point Guard Paul Dick was the SuperLeague Player of the Month with Coach Pat Price as the Coach of the Month. HURLERS HOPING FOR MORE OF THE SAME BUT NOT THE WEATHER! The Kerry hurlers and indeed the Meath player deserve all the credit they got for putting on any kind of performance in the snow in Fitzgerald Stadium last Sunday. Kerry proved to be the stronger team winning 3-15 to 0-08. They head for their Division 2A final in Ennis this Sunday where they will face Westmeath who were unbeaten in the League campaign with Kerry’s only defeat to the same opposition. Indeed Westmeath seen to have a bit of an Indian sign over Kerry in the last few years. But what better motivation is there for the Kerry players than righting this and qualifying for the new look Division 1 in 2020. With no relegation this season the plan is for two groups of 6 next season but how this will be split is not known. However with all the top teams involved and some teams on the up like Kerry it is the place where every hurler wants to be. Kerry have improved year on year and deserve a crack in the top flight and hopefully they can secure this on Sunday in Ennis. COUNTY LEAGUES GET UNDERWAY: The counties club footballers are ready to put their winter training to the test with the start of the Friday 8th March 2019
County Senior Football League on Sunday. In Division 1 from a Tralee point of view the big game is the derby with Kerin’s O’Rahillys taking on Na Gaeil at 3om in Healy Park while Austin Stacks are at home to Kilcummin in Connolly Park at 2pm, In Division 2 Ballymac are at home to Glenflesk from 2pm while John Mitchels are also at home when they welcome Glenbeigh/Glencar from 3pm. St Pat’s are away to Keel in Blennerville at 2pm in Division 3, in Division 5A Rahilly’s B welcome Kenmare Shamrocks B to Strand Road from 1.30pm and in 5B Mitchels B and Stacks B throw in in Ballyseedy also at 1.30pm. LACEY CUP BACK BUT ON A DIFFERENT ROUTE: The organisers of the Lacey Cup cycling race, the Tralee Manor West BC, had no choice but to cancel the race just after the start last Sunday. The snow started to fall as the peloton rolled out from the start on the Dingle road. Having gone ahead of the race I was on Gleann na nGealt and within 15 minutes visibility was down to a few meters and there was inches of snow on the road. So the race was lucky that it didn’t start until 12.30 as if it went off an hour earlier they would have been caught in the blizzard. But all well that ends well and everyone got back to the Manor West Hotel safely and the Cup will now be fought for this Saturday – on a different route. The Race HQ will again be the sponsors hotel and all those who signed on last weekend will not have to pay any signing on fee this Saturday but the field is not closed and additional riders can sign on for e20. Sign-on is from 12 to 1.30 with the A4’s off from 2pm and the A1/A2/A3’s racing from 2.15. The race will start at the Iron Bridge and race towards Castleisland, turning onto the Bypass and then after the top roundabout it will swing left and climb to the finish at Muingnaminane (ex-Landfill site). This is roughly the route of the 2019 Kerry County Championships. RALLY LAUNCH THIS SATURDAY: With the action set for April the 7th the 43rd Kerry Motor Club Rose Hotel Circuit of Kerry will be launched at the host hotel at 2.30pm this Saturday. The rally route over the North Kerry roads and a town centre rally experience the day before in The Square will certainly thrill rally fans from all over the county and beyond. The rally, under the leadership of Clerk of the Course Eoin Duffin is a counting round of both the Top Part West Coast Rally Championship and the Moriarty’s Centra Kingdom Rally Championship. Entries for the Circuit of Kerry are now open.
GRIFFIN TO LEAD OUT THE GIRLS IN GREEN It will be another proud night for Kerry rugby when Ballymac’s Ciara Griffin captains the Irish Women’s team in their 6 Nations clash with France at Donnybrook on Saturday evening. France are the current Grand Slam champions and beat England 41-26 in their last game while Ireland surprisingly went down 27-29 to Italy. BIG NIGHT AT THE TRACK This Friday night at the Kingdom Greyhound Stadium there is the final of the GMHD.ie Juvenile Classic plus the top class supporting card. The night is also a benefit night for MEK soccer club in Killarney with bouncy castles and novelty races plus music after racing. On Saturday night there is a fundraiser for Kanturk Cycling Club plus the final of the Kingdom Stadium 525 yards plus the first rounds of the Kingdom Stadium 325 yards. On Sunday there is the weekly SIS meeting starting at 6.35pm. The track is currently taking entries for the John and Mary Killeacle Dowling Memorial 570 yards current A1 starting on Friday March 22nd plus the Coursing bred Novice open 325 yards starting on March 30th with entries to the Racing Office on 061 448057. LEAGUE OF IRELAND WATCH: The 2019 League of Ireland season has kicked off and it will be a busy few months from now till October with 4 Kerry teams in action. The 17’s were the first in action with an away trip to Cobh Ramblers. Kerry took the lead through Daniel Okwute but two set piece goals saw the Ramblers take the win. Tralee manager Billy Dennehy said that while he was disappointed with the loss there were a number of positives to be taken from the game. This weekend the 17’s are at home to Bray Wanderers in Mounthawk Park at 2pm on Sunday. Bray opened their campaign with a 2-2 draw with Cork City so they will be difficult opponents. At the same time the Kerry 19’s open their campaign away to Bray Wanderers in the Carlisle Grounds from 2pm. The team under Darren Aherne have been preparing hard for this game, the first that Kerry will play at this level. The squad features a number of ex Tralee Dynamos and Park players. SPAR 5-A-SIDE DATES: The Spar FAI Primary 5-a-side competitions kicked off last week. The tournament for boys and girls in 4th, 5th and 6th class in primary schools puts the emphasis on fun and inclusivity. Over 37,000

FAI RDO Darren Aherne expertly runs the competition in Kerry and the dates for this year’s qualifiers are from March 12th to April 11th using both Christy Leahy Park and Celtic Park Killarney with the County finals set for Mounthawk Park on May 1st. If your child’s school has not signed up then have a chat with the principal. WHEELBLASTERS TAKE ON THE BEST IN THE GAME AS THEY CONTINUE TO DEVELOP: Some of the best Wheelchair Basketball teams in the country were in Tralee at the weekend for the Kingdom Wheelchair Blasters hosted IWB League. Tadgh Buckley of the Wheelblasters said that the team is progressing well as this is a long term project. “We were missing two of our starters yesterday but all the players on duty did well. This is the first year that we are competing at this level and it will take two or three years to get to the level of the sides who have been in the League for many years. We also have a number of very good juniors coming through and these will strengthen out squad for next season.” In the League round, played in John Mitchels, there were wins for the Rebel Wheelblasters, Shannonside Stealers, Ballybrack Bulls and South East Swifts.Saoirse Murphy from the Wheelblasters was the top scorer for her side in both games. TRALEE HOSTS BOXING COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIPS: The Tralee Boxing Club was the ideal host for the Kerry County Boxing Championships. There was 6 contested finals with a number of exhibition bouts also taking place on the day with fighters from Tralee, Sliabh Luachra, Trojan, Ballyduff and Rathkeale taking part. In the Championships there were wins for Liam Hennighan and Dan O’Brien from the newly formed Shadows Boxing Club in Killarney. Liam beat Trojan’s Nathan Evans in the Boy 1 33kg in a split decision and Dan saw off Tralee’s Tyrique McCarthy in the B3 52kg contest. Also winning were Sean O’Brien from Sliabh Luachra BC who beat Michael Burke Tralee BC in the Boy 4 50kg. O’Brien’s club mate Liam Walsh was also successful when he beat St Margaret’s Daniel Henrikson in the final of the 63kg JI. Ballyduff’s Will O’Sullivan is also a County Champion as he saw off David Joskic from St Margaret’s in the 59kg Boy 1 category. The club are expected to have a large number of boys and girls in the Munster’s. One of the fights of the day was
Sean Walsh of Trojan taking on Ballyduff’s Aaron McElligott. It was a bout of technical brilliance with Walsh taking the win on a unanimous decision. NATIONAL SENIOR CADETS: The National Senior Cadets take place over the next 3 weekends with places in the Europeans up for grabs. Amongst the boxers already weighted in are Sliabh Luachra’s Liam Walsh, Aaron McElligott, Katelyn Horan and Ava Fitzmaurice. Also weighing in in Mitchelstown ahead of the Senior Cadets was Ballyduff’s Jordan Goggin and Trojan’s Sean Walsh. MUNSTER GIRLS CHAMPIONSHIPS: The Munster Girls Boxing Championships will take place in the Sliabh Luachra Boxing club, in Castleisland, on April 6th and 7th. At the moment there are 11 Kerry girls set to take part. PARNELL’S DESERVE PRIDE OF PLACE It was a great week for the Tralee Parnells club to continue what has been a special few months where they secured their senior status. In midweek the news came through that Tadgh Brick was named on the Kerry senior hurling squad for the game against Meath. And then on Sunday it was an even prouder moment when he came on the field in the second half. This is a huge achievement for Tadgh who has yet to play a club senior hurling game. As a young teenager he was on the Abbeydorney Parnells panel that lost the Minor County Final. Easter Camp: Booking is open online for the Parnells Easter Camp which will take place from Monday 15th to Thursday 18th of April from 10am to 1pm and costing e35 per child. SafeTALK Workshop: The club extends an open invitation to members and other club members attend a SafeTALK workshop- being organised by the club - which will be run/facilitated by the HSE. Participants must be over 18 years of age and must be booked. Members are reminded that registration for 2019 is now due and can be played on-line. STACKS JUVENILE NEWS: Training for all ages is at the usual time and venues. Club kits are also available at Terry’s Butcher Shop in Oakpark. The u12’s had a busy start with the Timberlands Kitchen and Floors Town League. The A’s defeated John Mitchels and the B’s saw off Ardfert. Both teams are due to be in action again this weekend. The u14’s played Ballymac in terrible conditions but adapted better an d despite a run by the opposition in the second half the boys won well. There next game looks to be against Churchill on Monday the 18th. The B’s game against Rahillys was called off due to the weather. The 16’s moved their training to Saturday but still had to work out during some heavy rain. They

are working hard ahead of their opening game against Na Gaeil on March 18th. SCOR NA BPAISTI: The Greater Tralee Area Scor na bPaisti will be held next Wednesday March 13th in the Gaelscoil. The winners will go into the county semi-finals for the North Kerry area that will take place on Saturday March 23rd at 4pm in St Joseph’s Secondary School in Castleisland. The County Final of the Quiz is provisionally fixed for Saturday April 6th in the Glenbeigh Community Centre. KERRY CAMOGIE COME UP JUST SHORT AGAIN: The Kerry camogie side will be hoping for a turnaround in fortunes in their next game. They played well against Westmeath in their opening game without getting anything from it. And it was another case of this against Wexford in Tom Healy Park last weekend. The visitors were the stronger in the first half playing with the wind and let 0-07 to 0-01 at the break. Playing with that advantage Kerry came back into the game in the second half only to lose out 0-9 to 0-6 in the end after having a penalty pushed over the bar by the Wexford keeper. Next up for the girls is the long trip to Armagh. ST PAT’S NEWS: There was no winner of the Lotto from the numbers drawn 3,5,11 and 12 and the next jackpot will be e4,900 with the draw in Skelpers Quanes. Plans are well underway for the Dingle Way Challenge which will take place on June 2nd. Members are asked to pay their registration fees as soon as possible and this can also be done on-line. The Juvenile Academies were busy despite the weather with training continuing bothy indoors and outdoors. Parents are asked to note that there will be no training on St Patrick’s Day and hopefully many of the players will march in the Parade. The u6’s Player of the Week was Mary Kate O’Shea with Bruce McMillan named at u8’s while the u10’s went back indoors due to the weather. The 12’s trained of their opening League game while the u14’s face Austin Stacks B in Round 4 of the Tralee Town League while the u14 Girls had their 1st training session of the season. The Minors went down 2-08 to 0-05 in Round 2 of the Minor Football League. This Saturday they will face Ballymac at 4pm. The seniors are set for their first Senior Football League game of the season against Keel this Sunday at 2pm.
are at home to Kenmare Shamrocks B at 1.30. Well done to all those in the Juvenile Academy who went ahead last Sunday despite the bad weather. They will be out door again this Sunday. The u12’s played their deferred game against Stacks B and took the win to end their 2018 season on a high. They are away to Ardfert this Sunday at 3pm. The u14’s game fell fowl of the weather and are down to play John Mitchels this Sunday at 11am in the Town League. The 12’s and 14’s girls were also left disappointed when the weather put paid to their games. Along with the u16’s they train again this week as do the minor and junior Ladies. Members are asked to play their registration if they have not down so already. LGFA NATIONAL CONGRESS Killarney was the venue for this year’s LGFA National Congress. Congrats to the Kerry Ladies Co. Board for making it a success from start to finish and for all of the hard work they put in to make it successful. BALLYMAC NEWS: There was hard luck on the senior team who went down 1-18 to 0-10 in the final of the Tralee Senior Town League final. The town side hit 5 points near the end of the first half to open a gap that they never relinquished. They are back in County League action this Sunday. The Minors picked up their first points in the League defeating Ballymac 5-10 to 2-04. They were leading 2-05 to 1-01 at half time. They are away to St Pat’s in more County League action this weekend. Lotto: There was no winner from the numbers drawn 6,9, 19 and 28. Membership of the club is also due. In the underage section the u12 Gold Team saw off Ardfert 5-02 to 2-02. The u14’s are away to Churchill this Sunday at 11am. The committee reminds the members to keep an eye on the upcoming coaching courses as some people might be interested in getting a place on these. ON THE GREEN – CASTLEISLAND GC: The Mixed Scramble was won by Helena Kilbridge, Caroline Pierce and William O’Sullivan. They just saw off the trio of Bertha O’Sullivan, Elaine Richardson and Mary O’Sullivan. TRALEE GC: There were no competitions at the Tralee Golf Club this weekend due to the bad weather.
