LEGAL MATTERS CORNER MIRIAM MC GILLICUDDY ANSWERS YOUR LEGAL QUERIES

Angela has to buy multiple toys this Christmas . They have a certain budget and are anxious to get good value but also not to buy cheap toys that could break easily. What does Angela have to look out for ? A toy is defined in the law as a product intended for children aged under 14 to play with. In Angela’s case above a child’s toy that contains detachable or small parts should be marked as unsuitable for children under 36 months. Any specific hazard that exists should be drawn to your attention. Consumers are advised to follow a number of guidelines around toys in the run up to Christmas. This involves ensuring that any toys purchased come with the CE mark – in fact by law all electrics in Ireland must carry that CE mark, It is obviously better to buy toys with the CE mark for family safety as that guarantees certain standards have been adhered to in the toy manufacturing process. Parents are also urged to ensure that toys are age appropriate for their children when purchasing- many toys are for over 3 years of age. Additional care is also encouraged for toys that use batteries ( should be accessible only with a screwdriver) or that come with loose parts. Go for strong toys made of materials that do not burn easily and are non-toxic and toys that carry the CE mark. The name and address of the manufacturer and importer. Toys with Food should be packaged separately and it is not legal to have toys that you only get the toy after you eat it. Safety and assembly instructions should be ready carefully. Toys should be of merchantable quality, fit for purpose and as described and if not a consumer would be entitled to their money back. Descriptions on toys should be accurate. If any defective product/toy has harmed you or your family, you should: Preserve the product in question, Keep any receipts / proof of purchase, Make a note of the particulars of the purchase e.g. when and where. There may be a potential products liability claim as producers can be strictly liable for injuries caused by their products. AROUND 20,000 TOYS were prevented last year from entering Ireland due to health and safety deficiencies. These toys were mostly targeted for sale in discount shops or at markets and were generally unbranded and most of these were found to have come from the Far East. EU regulations prevent the sale of unsafe toys in Ireland. WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... JANE IS IN A GOOD ‘FRAME’ OF MIND If Kerry is the kingdom then one of the gems in our crown has to be the Jane Hilliard gallery which is nestled in Tralee Shopping Centre , right at the back near the automatic doors . It’s one of life’s pleasures to wander around getting lost in the tranquil lakes, rugged seashores or mountains roads with hedgerows covered in wildflowers that are depicted in the original paintings and limited-edition prints that Jane has created during the last 18 years in her gallery in the Tralee shopping centre. Now there is yet another reason to visit the gallery as Jane, together with her daughter Karol and husband Mike have extended the business and are now offering a full framing service. Jane says, “It’s a family affair and great to work together, the space is now larger and brighter and we feel the framing very much compliments the gallery. We do all sorts of framing, art work, photos, tapestries, jerseys, medals and all kinds of memorabilia. We recently had a man come in to us with a piece of art created by

his young daughter. It was stones glued to a painting representing the mother and child, the child was giving her mum a flower. It was beautiful and would melt your heart. We chose a pastel Mount to complement the colouring and a pretty pink box frame, the end result was stunning. I’m sure it brought a tear to her mums eye on Mother’s Day. I really enjoy the process of helping people to choose the correct frame, it is amazing how an imaginative approach can transform an image and how happy it makes people to be part of the process. A frame can do more than just complement its contents, it can became a beautiful piece of furnishing to enhance a room”. Keep your eyes on the Tralee Advertiser in the coming weeks as the Jane Hilliard Gallery and framing service will be offering a Special 25% off voucher for Christmas for allframing services.

TOP QUALITY SUITES FROM POLAND HAVE ARRIVED IN TRALEE! Earlier in the year , a business based in Killarney opened in Tralee due to the amount of Tralee and North Kerry business and enquiries it was getting in its Killarney store . Says Tomas the store owner and manager “Sliding Wardrobes and Furniture is 11 years established and we are proud of the standard of product we have in our showrooms . Our Suites are manufactured in Poland and not only come with a full 2 year warranty , but the majority of them have a unique hidden bed mechanism and extra storage built in . Yes our prices would be more competitive than the High St because we have our own manufacturer in Poland “ All our Suites have many different fabrics , both Cloth and Leather that we can finish them in , often at little if no extra cost . They also are busy fitting the 16

HUGE REACTION FROM PUBLIC TO CABALLS TOY STORE ST VINCENT DE PAUL APPEAL After only being launched only a matter of weeks ago , Anne and all her staff at the very popular Caballs Toy Store in Bridge St , Tralee have been overwhelmed already by the generosity of Kerry people to their annual Toy Appeal known as Operation Santa .” Its very simple yet very effective “ says Anne in that the appeal involves anyone who wishes to take part to simply come into our store or call us on 066-7121847 and buy a designated Gift Voucher , for any amount . This voucher is given directly to St Vincent de Paul to help ensure EVERY Child gets a Toy for Christmas . People from all over Kerry have been dropping in ...young Children with a few Euros , Teenagers and Adults alike. We have especially noticed that a lot of the older and elderly generation want to support this . They are saying that its a small way they can give back a little ...believe me...it all helps “ says Anne . “Yes the appeal is up on previous years .it just shows that even with things improving in the economy , people are not forgetting the less fortunate ...but its never any harm to remind ourselves now and again !”

Wine of the Week with Carry Out, Tralee & Ardfert

Malbec originates in Cahors in South West France but the style there is much more rustic than we have come to expect from Argentina. This is actually from the Languedoc but is made in a New World style with lot of violet aromas and dense chewy cherry and plum fruit. This probably needs some steak or lamb to show at its best. - Leslie Williams

Fuel Allowance is not included when calculating the Christmas Bonus. The minimum Christmas Bonus payment is €20. WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... KERRY APPRENTICES RECEIVE ADVANCED CERTIFICATE CRAFT ON COMPLETION OF THEIR APPRENTICESHIPS Graduating apprentices from Kerry who recently completed their apprenticeship were last week presented with their Advanced Certificate Craft. Apprentices graduated in a range of crafts including Electrical, Motor Mechanics, Agricultural Mechanics and Carpentry and Joinery. The Advanced Certificate Craft is at Level 6 of the National Framework of Qualifications and is an internationally recognised qualification. The event was co-hosted by SOLAS, Kerry ETB, Cork ETB and Limerick and Clare ETB. Speaking at the presentation, Paul O’Toole, CEO, SOLAS, spoke of the Apprenticeship programme and drew particular attention to the calibre of the Irish Apprenticeship system which is recognised nationally and internationally. Colm McEvoy, CEO, Kerry Education and Training Board congratulated apprentices saying “The apprenticeship system in Ireland has long been recognised, both nationally and internationally, for its excellence. This is a real time of opportunity for all the apprentices receiving their Advanced Certificate Craft at this ceremony. I wish them every success in the

years ahead and hope they all embrace the opportunities that exist and excel in their chosen field of expertise.” Apprenticeship in Ireland has traditionally been the path to skilled occupations in a range of sectors such as construction, engineering, motor and electrical. Recently, under the guidance of the Apprenticeship Council, the apprenticeship system in Ireland is expanding resulting in a wider range of occupations available which aims to attract more people into apprenticeships. Since 2016 the range of apprenticeship options in Ireland has extended in areas such as Insurance Practice, Electrical Engineering, Polymer Processing, Manufacturing Engineering, International Financial Services, Commis Chef and Accounting with many more on the way. Concluding the ceremony, Paul O’Toole congratulated the apprentices who received their Advanced Certificates Craft on their achievement of being recognised as highly skilled craftspeople and wished them every success in their careers. RECOVERY HAVEN CRAFT FAIR TRALEE Shopping centre will be oozing Christmas spirit this Saturday, December 2, as the town centre premises hosts the annual Recovery Haven Kerry Craft Fair. Management at the shopping centre on The Mall have offered to open up several empty units to facilitate this year’s craft fair – a hugely important fundraiser for the busy cancer support service based at Haig’s Terrace. A superb selection of Kerry craftspeople have signed up to showcase their wares on the day, each offering some wonderful Christmas gift ideas as we head into the busy festive season. From arts and crafts and jewellery to candles, Christmas cards and woodwork, shoppers will have plenty to choose from on the day. 22

TRALEE ADVERTISER

Recovery Haven Kerry which offers free, therapeutic support to cancer patients across Kerry, will also have an information stand at the fair, as well as their own stall filled with some wonderful Christmas gift hampers. Paying tribute to the management at Tralee Shopping Centre, as well as all the craftspeople who are taking part, Recovery Haven Kerry’s PR & Marketing Officer Marisa Reidy is encouraging the public to come along between 12 noon and 5pm to offer their support. “Firstly we have to say a massive thank you to the management and the existing tenants at Tralee Shopping Centre who came on board immediately when we approached them with the idea. They could have Friday 1st December 2017

done more for us and we are extremely grateful to them for their support and enthusiasm and for offering us the use of great town centre location,” Marisa said. “We are also hugely grateful to all the craftspeople who have pledged their support to us, so now all we need is for the public to embrace the event and not only make it a success for us at Recovery Haven Kerry, but also for those who will be showcasing their crafts on the day. The support of

the public is vital for all of us, so hopefully people will pop in and do a bit of Christmas shopping with us and help make the event a great success.”

MAKEUP LOVER’S CHRISTMAS GIFT GUIDE Almost everyone has someone in their life who loves makeup, it’s a given. But sometimes it can be hard to know what to get a Self Confessed Makeup Lover... I decided to compile a list of makeup that is both available in Tralee and online! This Gift Guide is for all my fellow makeup junkies(and their boyfriends/girlfriends/husbands/wives you get the drill. Whether you love makeup yourself or you’re looking to buy a gift for someone who does, I’m sure this list will help! Blank Canvas Brushes Personally, I can never have enough makeup brushes. A good brush is key to good makeup. I’m notorious for spending money on makeup and not enough on makeup tools, so I would really appreciate getting brushes as a gift. The Blank Canvas Cosmetics brushes are my favourite for many reasons. 1 - They’re so affordable, 2 - The quality is unreal & 3 - They have vegan brushes for all my animal lovers! I have selected a few of my must have eye brushes from Blank Canvas. You can also get the brushes in CH Chemist.

Blank Canvas Cosmetics Master Series 1 Eyeshadow Palette €35 This is one of my most favourite palettes that I own. Blank Canvas are really upping their game when it comes to palettes! This is the PERFECT palette for anyone who loves a good brown smokey eye. So basically everyone! The pigment is amazing, you only need the tiniest bit of shadow, so on the flip side, be careful not to pack your brush because you will get fallout because of the high pigment. A great problem to have! If you’re buying a gift for someone who loves makeup, you simply cannot go wrong with this palette. The Jaclyn Hill Eyeshadow Palette by Morphe (ONLY AVAILABLE ONLINE AT MORPHE UK OR BEAUTYBAY) If you follow me on Instagram you already know I’m extremely obsessed with this Palette it is PERFECT! It is SO versatile and pigmented. It’s only available online. But I 1000% recommend getting this for any Makeup lover (or yourself who am I to judge)

Benefit Hoola Bronzer €35 I wanted this bronzer for so long and finally treated myself to it. It’s by far my favourite bronzer, it’s the perfect shade to give a nice glow without looking orange. It also lasts ages!

Wet N Wild Mega Glo Highlighter in Precious Petals (under €5) If you are looking for an extremely affordable yet high quality product - I got you! This highlighter is absolutely INSANE. I was out of my all time favorite (Champagne Pop) so I picked this up in Costello’s pharmacy in Tralee and I was so impressed. This is a great gift if you got someone for Secret Santa who loves makeup (who isn’t obsessed with highlighter)

That’s my short but sweet Makeup Gift Guide for Christmas to hopefully help you out! Next week I will be doing a skincare focoused one so watch out for that! Also, tickets for my Beautiful Favourites event on Saturday January 6th (Women’s Christmas) are now on sale in Benners Hotel Tralee! There will be full makeup and skincare demos, q&a’s, spotprizes, guest speakers and sooooo much more! I look forward to seeing some of you there! Also, if you buy your ticket on or before the 3rd of December, you’re entered into a competitive to win a full makeover by me!

I hope you all have an amazing week!

FITNESS!

HELLO MY STRONG FRIENDS! I HOPE YOU’RE ALL HAVING A FANTASTIC WEEK! This week I’m going to be talking all about why low carb diets don’t work. Trust me, I’ve tried them all and the only thing they do is destroy your metabolism. As a weight loss strategy, cutting carbs (while reducing the total number of calories) clearly works pretty well for some people. If it didn’t, then Atkins would have never been popular in the first place. When you cut carbs you initially drop water weight, not fat. So therefore if you cut carbs for 4 weeks for your holiday, you drop weight, mostly water weight. Then the second you start eating carbs again your body will retain more water than before and you will look bloated for your entire holiday, who wants that? No one! Here’s the thing, though: Carb reduction costs us. You see, most of us require some level of carbohydrates to function at our best over the long term. Keeping carbs too low for too long can have disastrous consequences. This is especially true for those of us

who work out. If you’re sedentary, your carb needs are lower. So you might be able to get away with more restriction. But if you like to exercise regularly and enthusiastically, restricting your carb intake can lead to: 1. Decreased thyroid output 2. Increased cortisol output 3. Decreased testosterone 4. Impaired mood and cognitive function 5. Muscle loss

experience, lots of women are afraid of carbs and think that they’re bad. What you really need to look at is how much salt and sugar are in your foods. I have said it before and I will say it again… INVEST IN A GOOD PERSONAL TRAINER. It will honestly change your life, and your perception of carbs.

In other words: Your metabolism might slow, your stress hormones go up and your muscle-building hormones go down. Women with too-low carb intakes — especially active women — can face: a stopped or irregular menstrual cycle; lowered fertility; more body fat (especially around the middle); chronic fatigue and disrupted sleep; Everything should be in balance. I’m not saying to eat just carbs and only carbs every day, but I am saying that from

HAZELNUT-ROSEMARY CARAMEL TART INGREDIENTS • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •

1 cup plus 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour 1/4 cup caster sugar 3/4 teaspoon baking powder 1/2 teaspoon fine sea salt 165g butter, cubed 2 large egg yolks Ice water 165g butter 1 tablespoon chopped rosemary 1 1/2 cups hazelnuts 3 large eggs 3 large egg yolks 1 cup packed light brown sugar 3/4 cup brown rice syrup 1/4 cup honey 1 teaspoon fine sea salt 2 tablespoons heavy cream 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract Flaky sea salt, for sprinkling Whipped crème fraîche, for serving

METHOD 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6.

Make the pastry In a food processor, pulse the flour with the caster sugar, baking powder and fine sea salt. Add the butter and pulse until the mixture resembles coarse meal. Add the egg yolks and 1 tablespoon of ice water and pulse until the pastry just comes together; add another tablespoon of ice water if it seems dry. Turn the pastry out onto a work surface and pat into a disk. Wrap in plastic and refrigerate until chilled, 1 hour. On a floured work surface, roll out the pastry to a 12-inch round. Ease the round into a 10-inch fluted tart pan with a removable bottom, pressing it into the corners and up the side, patching any tears. Trim off any overhang. Freeze the tart shell for 30 minutes. Preheat the oven to 165c. Line the tart shell with parchment paper and fill it with pie weights or dried beans. Bake in the center of the oven for 20 minutes. Remove the parchment and weights. Bake the shell for 10 to 15 minutes longer, until lightly browned. Let cool completely. Leave the oven on. Meanwhile, make the filling In a small saucepan, melt the butter over moderate heat. Remove from the heat, add the rosemary and let steep for 20 minutes. Strain the butter into a small bowl and let cool. Spread the hazelnuts on a rimmed baking sheet and toast in the oven until fragrant and golden and the skins are splitting, about 12 minutes. Let cool slightly, then transfer to a kitchen towel and rub together to remove the skins; let cool. Coarsely chop the hazelnuts and spread them in the cooled tart shell. Put the tart shell on a rimmed baking sheet. Reduce the oven temperature to 145c In a large bowl, beat the whole eggs and yolks with the brown sugar, brown rice syrup, honey and fine sea salt. Gradually whisk in the rosemary butter, then whisk in the cream, flour and vanilla. Pour the filling into the tart shell and sprinkle flaky sea salt on top. Bake the tart for 50 minutes, until the filling is set at the edge but slightly jiggly in the center. Let cool completely. Serve at room temperature or slightly chilled, topped with a dollop of whipped crème Recipes by fraîche alongside.

TORQUING CARS! MERC’S ‘HIT’ SYSTEM

One of the biggest sources of dents and scrapes on cars can occur in car parks, I believe. People bump trolleys indiscriminately - we’ve all seen them. Now Mercedes have developed a system that will tell you on your mobile phone if someone has hit your car - or worse still is trying to steal it. I know it won’t prevent the damage, but at least you’ll know there and then and may be able to do something about it. The system has been developed as part of the company’s connected services. We’re told its controlled via an app and will be available on all Mercs that have the necessary sensors. It can be automatically activated when the car is locked. Maybe if you’re quick enough you might get to the scene of the crime before the offender flees. (Indo Motoring )

IMPORTS DRIVE DOWN AVERAGE AGE OF CARS

The wave of used imports is slashing the average age of our cars. History and data expert CARTELL.IE claims the age of vehicles is falling as the number of imports has reached an all-time high. The impact on average age is dramatic. Since January it has fallen by 75 days. That’s because people are buying fresher imports. The average age of all cars now is 8.7 years - down nearly three months (80 days) since January this year. Imports average 9.02 years - the youngest since July 2011. The number of cars imported between 1999 and 2017 is at a record 480,606. Total car numbers stand at 2,289,922. Cartell’s John Byrne says: “Imports are reducing the age of the Irish fleet as buyers move up the years and bring in a car from the UK. Possibly buyers are importing newer vehicles without retiring older vehicles. This may explain why the age is declining while the size is still increasing.” He warned buyers, however, to be careful when importing as a car may carry a hidden history.

MOTORING SNIPPETS

Six Skoda employees will represent Ireland and compete against 35 countries at the International Finals in Barcelona next year. The employees are Paul Bruton and Marc Gorman, from Cork, Darragh Smith, from Cavan, Robbie Matthews, from Naas, Eoghan Watson, from Dublin, and David Mullane from Galway. The challenge assesses the qualities of the best employees in the global Skoda network. The best of luck to them. BMW is to invest €200m over the next four years in a battery cell competence centre in Munich. MSL GRANGE MOTORS MERCEDES-BENZ have invested €4m in a new showroom and aftersales facility at Pottery Road in south Dublin, just off the N11.The dealership - 50 years in Deansgrange MSL - has outgrown their showroom and moved to Pottery Road, where their service centre has been based since 1994.The latest addition means there is now a large, 20-car showroom, workshop and parts department all under one roof. THE NEW INFINITI QX50 will use what is claimed to be the world’s first “production variable compression ratio engine”. The big SUV’s turbocharged 2-litre 4cyl engine, called VC-Turbo, can adjust its compression ratio from 8:1 (if you want performance) to 14:1 (for economy). Toyota here has become an official partner to Paralympics Ireland and to the 2020 and 2024 Irish Paralympic teams. VOLKSWAGEN are planning for a range of “mild hybrid” powertrains, according to reports. They include a new 48v version of 1.5 TSI engine. KIA is scheduled t0 roll out a new cee’d-based crossover for the European market next year. That means that they will have three SUVs on the go: the smaller Stonic, the newest (cee’d) crossover and the popular, larger Sportage. By the way, the cee’d hatch 5dr, on which the new SUV will be based, will unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show in March and is due to go on sale here in July. AN OFF-BEAT SURVEY by Cassidy Travel shows what our dream rental car would be. For women it’s a Range Rover (19pc), Lamborghini (14pc), Aston Martin (13pc) or Ferrari (11pc). And for men it’s Lamborghini (24pc), Aston Martin (22pc), Range Rover (15pc), Porsche (9pc). SEAT’S new small-crossover Arona has just gone on sale here (€17,995).

LAUGHTER ....THE BEST MEDICINE ! A COUPLE IS WALKING IN ST. PETERSBURG SQUARE ON CHRISTMAS EVE. THEY FEEL A SLIGHT PRECIPITATION.

I think it’s raining” says the man. “I think it’s snowing” says the woman. “How about we ask this Communist officer here? He’s always right!” Exclaims the man. “Officer Rudolph, is it raining or snowing?” “Definitely raining,” officer Rudolph replies before walking off. The man turns to his wife with a smile. “See? Rudolph the Red knows rain, dear.”

ANDY WAS SENT TO PRISON

Several years ago, Andy was sentenced to prison. During his stay, he got along well with the guards and all his fellow inmates. The warden saw that deep down, Andy was a good person and made arrangements for Andy to learn a trade while doing his time. After three years, Andy was recognized as one of the best carpenters in the local area. Often he would be given a weekend pass to do odd jobs for the citizens of the community... and he always reported back to prison before Sunday night was over. The warden was thinking of remodeling his kitchen and in fact had done much of the work himself. But he lacked the skills to build a set of kitchen cupboards and a large counter top, which he had promised his wife. So he called Andy into his office and asked him to complete the job for him. But, alas, Andy refused. He told the warden, “Gosh, I’d really like to help you but counter fitting is what got me into prison in the first place.”

A TEXAN, A FRENCHMAN, AND A NEW YORKER GET KIDNAPPED BY CANNIBALS the cannabal chief says: “We’re going to eat you and use your skins to build a canoe. But we are not without compassion, we will let you choose how you die.” “I would like a knife” said the texan the texan got the knife and slit his throat. “remember the alamo” he said before dying. the frenchman then said “give me a sword” so the cannables gave him a sword stolen from previous explorers and the frenchman stuck it through his chest. his last words were “viva la france!” 36

LAST LETTER

A very ill man was in the hospital, in critical condition. the doctor brought in the priest. the priest administered the last rites and... the man woke up! He pointed to a piece of paper and a pen on the stand next to his bed, so the priest gave it to him. he wrote down a message and handed it to the priest, who stuffed the note in his pocket, wanting to keep the man’s last words a mystery until they could be read to the grieving family. and then the man died. about an hour later, when the family regained their composure after hearing te news, the priest remembers the note and reads it to the family. “I forgot! the man wrote something down!” he fumbles through his pockets, and finds the note. it reads: “hey, you! you’re standing on my oxygen tube!”

TODAY I WOKE UP EARLY

I quietly put on my clothes, made coffee. I took my golf clubs and went slowly into the garage. I put the clubs in the car and pulled the car out of the garage under torrential rain. The road was totally flooded and the icy wind blew at 50 km per hour. I went back to the garage, turned on the radio, and heard that the weather would have lasted all day. So I went back home, took off my clothes and quietly slipped back to bed. Slowly I approached my wife and, holding her, I whispered in her ear: “the weather outside is horrible!” Half asleep she replied: “Yes I know …Can you believe my dumb husband went out to play golf!”

TALKING SPORT WITH THE TRALEE ADVERTISER

with “The Voice” Pat Harnett

FAI NATIONAl P.R.O. OF THE YEAR IT’S DECEMBER 2017 BUT THERE IS STILL PLENTY OF SPORT: LATE GOALS SET UP ALL IRELAND REPLAY FOR CLANMAURICE: In the AIB All Ireland Club Final it looked for a minute like Clanmaurice might be bringing the title back to Kerry but late drama means that both sides will meet again this Sunday. The game played in tough conditions in Crettyyard GAA grounds saw the Kerry girls taking on Kilmessan of Meath. Clanmaurice got off to the better start and will be disappointed that they didn’t make more of this period with the wind behind them. The wind and cold made the game a hard slog on a pitch that was a credit to the host club. At half time Clanmaurice led by 3 points to 2 but they were 3 points up at one period. Kilmessan levelled and both sides saw their defence well on top and it was not till the 28th minute that the Kerry girls went 4 points to 3 ahead. Their opponents levelled to set up the nerve jingling finish. Aoife Behan looked like she had cemented her place in Kerry sporting history when she hit the Kilmessan net. The goal came after Jessica Fitzell had deflected Patrice Diggins free back across the square. But the 2014 champions must be given credit and Aileen Donnelly managed to beat the excellent Alanna Maunsell in the Kerry goal it was all level again. The referee blew the full time whistle which saw the final score at 1-04 each and the sides must do it all again. The replay is confirmed for this Sunday 3rd December in Silvermines Gaa, Dolla, Co Tipperary with a throw in time of 1.15 pm. Please do come along and support the girls as their quest for All Ireland glory goes to a deciding day. Camogie News: Cillard Camogie Club will host their AGM on the 29th November at 8pm in Kilmoyley Gaa , Clubrooms. Kerry Camogie Fundraiser: We are appealing to the public to please support our fundraiser with just a short time left. We have been going door to door and will continue

selling Kerry Camogie Christmas Draw tickets, 1 for a €5, 3 for €10 & 7 for €20 for some fantastic prizes. We still have a few more parishes to go around to and will be finishing this in two weeks. 1st prize €750, 2nd prize €350, 3rd prize hamper value €200, 4th prize hamper value €120 & 5th prize hamper value €80. We have been getting a fantastic response so far which we are delighted with the selling so far. 2017 was an excellent year for Kerry Camogie with success at U14, U15 & Minor with All Ireland Titles. Our senior team won the Munster Junior Championship and reached the semi-final of the Liberty Insurance League & Championship and will be aiming to go one better in 2018. There is a lot of expense associated with this number of teams representing Kerry proudly in Camogie and the funds raised in this draw will help offset some of the costs in 2018. The board appreciate your continued support of Kerry Camogie both on and off the field.

few weeks for both players and supporters. To help get more games resolved on the day of first round games there will be a further extra time played over two 5 minute periods. One of the most interesting defeats on the night was for the County Committee’s motion to have the age level for minor club games dropped to u17 next season. The Inter County set up will be at u17’s but now the county minor games will remain at u18’s. It will certainly be interesting to see how this works out but delegates did vote that if needed things could be aligned in 2019.

KERRY LADIES REWARDED WITH 2 ALL STARS: The gala night for the countries Ladies footballers took place this week with the naming of the TG4 Ladies All Star team. Kerry Ladies GAA are celebrating two awards with both Caroline Kelly and Lorraine Scanlon winning for the first time. Lorraine’s win sees her match her mother Mary Lane achievement as she won her All Star in 1987. The 2016 and 2017 All Star selections will play an exhibition game in Thailand in 2018.

PARNELLS NEWS: The club congratulates Tadgh Reen from the u14 team who was amongst the county players recognised at the North Kerry Hurling Board Awards. The recent Anti bullying workshop ran by the County Board in Na Gaeil was very informative for all those who attended. There are details of the policy and the GAA’s Code of Behaviour on the clubs social media platforms. AGM: The 2017 AGM has accepted a proposal from Chair Dermot Reen not to fill the post of President in 2018 as a mark of respect to the late Eileen Cotter and to the Cotter family. The club is also looking to appoint an Assistant PRO due to the increasing numbers of players and teams in the club. The Assistant will work with the PRO to ensure all areas of the media portfolio are covered.

INTERESTING CHANGES TO THE CLUB SET-UP: The delegates at the recent GAA’s Coiste Chiarrai meeting have voted some major changes to the club set-up in the county. Amongst the big changes are the playing of the three Club Championships – the Senior, Junior Premier and Junior – to their end in over the month of April and early May and these will be played in a League format. The County Senior Championship will be condensed into one block of September and October which will certainly lead to an exciting Friday 1st December 2017

ST PAT’S NEWS: There was no winner of the Lotto from the numbers drawn 12,17,23 and 29 with the next draw being e5,100 in Skelper Quane’s Bar. AGM: The Senior Club’s AGM takes place this Sunday in the Club Rooms at 3pm. All members are asked to attend. An hour earlier in the same venue the Juvenile AGM takes place.

BALLYMAC NEWS: There was no winner of the Lotto from the numbers drawn 2,3,11, 17 and the next jackpot will be e2,500 with the draw taking place in Glenduff Manor.

Congratulations to Fionán Fitzgerald: Congratulations and best wishes to Fionán Fitzgerald who has been nominated as Assistant Secretary of Kerry County Board. Fionán does not have any opposition and will be formally appointed at County Convention on Monday 11th December 2017. Fionán served as Secretary of Ballymacelligott GAA Club for three years and is our Current Assistant Secretary. Fionán is multi-talented and runs our local Community Alert, is the current Secretary of the Tralee District Board and is the anchor-man for Kerry GAA TV as well as the Fear an Tí at Coiste Scór Competitions. Ballymacelligott GAA Club is proud of Fionáns elevation and we wish him every success. We are indebted to him for the work he did for our Club and will support him in every way in his new position. Ballymac Strictly Love Dancing 2018: The dancers are in rehearsals for the club’s Strictly that will take place in the Ballygarry Hotel in the new year. Details are on the clubs Facebook page. AGM: The club AGM will be held in the Healy Rooms on Friday night next 1st Dec @ 20.00 with all members invited to attend. The AGM is the most important club meeting of the year, where the chairman will outline in his report the work done during the year and the secretary and treasurer will also provide detailed reports. It is also an opportunity for members to air their views on club and association policy and to revise or endorse same. KERINS O’RAHILLYS NEWS: Juveniles: On Sunday, December 17th the club is having a Christmas party for the juveniles with a puppet show, face painting and more importantly and a special visitor checking in on the girls and boys before his visit on Christmas Eve. Hope that everyone is behaving! Ladies Notes: The Juvenile and Ladies section would like to sincerely thank all our coaches, mentors, volunteers and parents for their tireless commitment to the girls and boys during the year. The ladies club had a full bodied year, overall performing very well. Well done to the girls on their efforts and look forward to next year. They finished off our year with well rewarded day trips for the U12s, U14s, U16s and Minors to Mahon Point and Bounce Zone in Cork. The girls are a credit to themselves, their parents and our club. Indoor training continues on Wednesday in CBS, The Green at 6p.m. Christmas Fair: The Christmas Fair was a great success last year and this year will be on in The Healy Room in the club on Sunday, December 17th. Women’s Night Out: The Ladies are meeting up on Saturday, December 16th for their annual night out. This

KERRY DEFEAT LIMERICK ON PENALTIES IN THE OSCAR TRAYNOR: The Kerry District League side are through to the knockout stages of the Oscar Traynor tournament follow a sudden death penalty defeat of Limerick at Mounthawk Park. The side managed by David Hennessy and John Heagarty were 1-0 up, thanks to a Danny Roche goal, at half time following an excellent first 45 minutes where the played some great football. Limerick DL were never going to just accept defeat and the upped their intensity in the second half and they levelled mid-way through the period. Both sides had chances to win the game in normal and extra time but neither could find the net and so it was onto penalties. Kerry keeper Brian O’Connor proved to be the hero saving three Limerick kicks, the last one to win the game after Killarney Celtic’s Matt Keane had again given the home side the lead in sudden death. The manager was delighted with the win saying that “It was great to get over this hurdle and hopefully we can now get another home draw in the Last 16.
