Billy simplifies and explains Todays Technology Question: I have a Mac Book Pro. Do I need antivirus? There are many forms of ‘Malware’ that can affect a computer system, of which ‘a virus’ is but one type, ‘Trojans’ another. Using the strict definition of a computer virus, no viruses that can attack OS X have so far been detected 'in the wild', i.e. in anything other than laboratory conditions. The same is not true of other forms of malware, such as Trojans. Recently Sky News reported a crypto lock virus had infected some Macs. It was asking up to €300 to unlock your files. In my opinion it is wise to have a good Antivirus to prevent Infection. Question: I get popups when I go online. What can I do? This is what is called browser hijacking so no matter what website you go on you have these popups that are very annoying and you cannot do anything. First thing to do is to stop any financial transactions. Scan your computer with antimalware program, for example Super Anti-Spyware. You can download this for free then reset your browser back to default. Remember always backup your computer before making changes.

KNOW YOUR RIGHTS: HOME RENOVATION INCENTIVE Question We plan to extend our home and hope to claim the Home Renovation Incentive. How does this scheme work? Answer The Home Renovation Incentive (HRI) scheme enables homeowners to claim tax relief on repairs, renovations or improvement work carried out on their homes. Landlords can also avail of the scheme. It is paid in the form of a tax credit at 13.5% of qualifying expenditure, which can be set against your income tax over 2 years. You must be paying income tax to avail of the HRI. You must also be up to date with your Local Property Tax (LPT) obligations. Your contractor must be registered for Value Added Tax (VAT) in Ireland and be tax compliant. They also have to register the work on the HRI online administration system. If you use several contractors, such as a builder, a plumber and an electrician, you can combine the cost of the works to make up the minimum qualifying expenditure of €5,000 excluding VAT at 13.5%. Repair, renovation or improvement work subject to VAT at 13.5% all qualify for the HRI, including extensions and attic conversions; supply and fitting of kitchens, bathrooms and built-in wardrobes; fitting of windows; plumbing, tiling, rewiring and plastering. Work subject to VAT at 23% is not covered. Neither are items such as furniture, white goods or carpets. The work must be carried out and paid for by 31 December 2016. In general, the tax credit is paid over the 2 years following the year in which the work is carried out and paid for. If you are a PAYE taxpayer, the credit will be included in your annual Tax Credit Certificates. If you are a self-assessment taxpayer, it will be incorporated into your tax assessment. After work starts you should log in to HRI online to check that your contractor(s) have entered details of the work. You will not be able to claim the HRI tax credit if the details have not been entered onto HRI online. Once the work has been completed you can claim the HRI credit. You access the HRI online system through Revenue’s myAccount service or through the Revenue Online Service (ROS) if you are registered for ROS. There is detailed information for homeowners and landlords on revenue.ie.

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... TRALEE STUDENTS STAR AT COIRM GAEL LINN 2016!

Students from Gaelscoil Mhic Easmainn, Tralee, starred at the annual Coirm Gael Linn festival held in Tralee on Tuesday, 8 March last! They were among almost 250 exhuberant young performers from primary schools in Counties Kerry, Limerick and Cork who treaded the boards of the Siamsa Tíre theatre during the day. Pupils from first to sixth classes staged variety shows that incorporated music, singing, dancing, story-telling and acting – all ‘as Gaeilge’ – with a theme of their own choice. The auditorium was filled to capacity and the appreciative audience, comprising schoolchildren, parents and teachers, were treated to a great display of musical and dramatic talent. They were also entertained before and after each show by the popular entertainer, Giggles the clown! While Coirm Gael Linn is not a competition, each show is reviewed by a guest adjudicator and a written critique is given to each teacher. At the adjudicator’s discretion, special merit awards or ‘gradaim’, are also presented for outstanding performances by individuals or ensembles during the shows. On this occasion, Gerry Motherway complimented the teachers for the imaginative, lively, exhuberant and atmospheric productions by all the participating schools. He presented two awards to the stellar cast from Gaelscoil Mhic Easmainn, Tralee, for their wonderful presentation of ‘Cláiríneach na Scéalta’ ( The Crippled Storyteller ). Teacher Colm Ó hAiniféin was delighted with his pupils’ success ! Coirm Gael Linn has proved a popular event on the school calendar over the years, and a total of nine festivals will be held at various venues nationwide over the coming weeks. Seán Ó Ceallaigh, National Schemes Manager, Gael Linn comments: ‘Our hope is that, by having a positive and fun experience at the Coirm festivals, thousands of primary school pupils will be encouraged to use whatever knowledge they have of the language both inside and outside the classroom with confidence’.

ARE YOU GOING TO THE KUBE? Are you interested in learning to cycle with a group, training for the Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle or the Ring of Beara Cycle? Bexblah Fitness! ALL ABOUT WEIGHT TRAINING! Hello my strong friends, this week I’m talking all about weight training and how it can help you achieve your goals! In general, people will practice cardiovascular activities and forget about weight bearing exercises when it comes to burning fat. And there are still many trainers who will say that aerobic exercises burn off fat and weightlifting is only used to build muscle bulk. This statement is not entirely correct because the more muscle mass one acquires through weight-bearing exercises, the more he will burn fat calories — even at rest.

COMBINE CARDIO AND WEIGHT TRAINING

This change is for the best because cardiovascular activity combined with weight training will result in much more effective fat loss. Cardiovascular exercises will raise muscle metabolism during the activity and for a short time after the exercise session. Weight training, on the other hand, will raise your muscle metabolism during the exercise session — and for a long time after the exercise session. Some high intensity trainers have even seen their metabolism rise for several days following their training session. Performing adequate weight training exercises should limit your repetitions anywhere from 1 to 20 (more or less). Such resistance on muscles will make their tissue leaner and stronger. The muscle development will take place during the rest period following the resistance training. Therefore, sufficient rest periods are essential. Whether your goal is to tone or build muscles, it is important to know what happens during the muscle training process. When lifting weights, muscle tissues are torn apart (at the microscopic level) from the stress, and it’s in the recuperation period that your muscles become stronger and, therefore, able to support the extra stress. Usually the recuperation period required is 24 to 48 hours after the weight lifting activity.

BURNING ENERGY AFTER A WORKOUT

During the recuperation period, the muscle metabolism is still burning energy, and that’s when it’s time to perform cardiovascular activities. Carrying out high repetitions of the same movement will tire the body on a different basis. Combining low-repetition exercises (weight lifting) with high-repetition cardiovascular exercise will stress muscles in a complementary way to increase the total fat-burning effect. Anybody who debates the fact that weight-bearing exercises don’t help people lose weight and fat should lift weights for one hour and see their heart rate go through the roof. Simply look at athletes who specialise in short, intense bursts of energy and you still see that they are very low in body fat. The point is to combine a weight lifting routine with a good cardiovascular workout to increase muscle metabolism and total fat burning ratio. An important factor to consider when trying to lose weight is that lots of muscle mass can be lost as a result. As muscle mass will keep your metabolism high, try to avoid quick weight loss through miracle diets or starvation. This weight loss will be regained just as quickly. Instead, opt for a gradual fat loss routine by combining weight training and cardiovascular activities, and allow muscle mass to build up and increase your metabolism. Results may take a little longer, but they will last for a longer period of time.

HEALTHY RECIPES for 2016

Is it really “In Season “ ?

So while sitting here this evening thinking about that dishes I would do this week and for the restaurant.... going through what is ‘in season ‘and ‘coming into season’ in the next few weeks...... those words stuck with me ....”in season” It is thrown about but is it really understood?

FACTS: NUMBER 1

In season food that’s been freshly harvested has more nutrients and flavour than food that’s travelled hundreds of miles and/or has been stored before it reaches you. Did you know apples can be up to a year old in supermarkets when you buy them??? Shocking right ?We are used to the perfect fruit shiny round, but that is not how nature works ...apples have a season... well everything does... Strawberries don’t grow at Christmas... but the shelves will be full of them and is there anything better than a strawberry in season so juicy and packed full of flavour.

NUMBER 2 Buying seasonal food usually means we’re supporting local producers, farmers, farmers markets, which is great for local economies, support your farmer markets and small local butchers and veg shops they buy local and support local its good business

NUMBER 3 Buying seasonal food means it’s usually cheaper. Buying a punnet of strawberries in June should be much cheaper than buying a punnet at Christmas. If it’s not, we should ask ourselves (or the shopkeeper) why not

NUMBER 4 Somehow strawberries and raspberries seem much more appealing when the sun is warm on our skins, when they are at their best its the taste of summer reminds me of my childhood . Likewise we enjoy eating warming stews and soups loaded with root vegetables in winter. I remember the lovely smell of a stew cooking on a cold winters day it filled the soul with warmth

NUMBER 5

Eating in season is good for the environment, makes sense right no air miles plants are good for the air we breath.... good for the local economy...... good for our health

ps...... rhubarb is what is in season now!!

The others ask jealousy: “Where have you been?” Smiling he answers: “You guys see that group of lights down there? It was a wedding with over 20 guests. BRICKS N’ MORTAR... AIRBNB VERSUS HOTELS: BUSINESS TRAVELLERS JOIN THE FRAY

On New Year’s Eve in New York, 47,000 visitors did not stay in hotels, opting instead for properties rented through Airbnb. There are about 113,000 hotel rooms in New York, and not all were full that night. Hoteliers may have finally priced themselves out of the market, as travellers to the city tell tales of vastly overpriced rooms. And it is not only New York that is reaping the benefit of the disruptive “sharing” economy. Paris has 45,000 listings – 57 per cent are entire homes – while Berlin has more than 15,000, some 68 per cent of which are entire homes. Dublin has 3,773 listings, with 44 per cent being entire homes. War has raged in various cities over the growth of Airbnb. Santa Barbara on the west coast of the US has banned the company completely. In Berlin, owners are required to register with the city council and with the deadline come and gone, only 6,300 properties have been registered so far.CBRE estimates that Airbnb users spent $2.4 billion (€2.2 billion) on accommodation in the US last year. At the Irish Hotels Federation conference last week, the number of additional hotel rooms needed in Dublin was estimated to be 3,000. There are already 3,415 in the planning pipeline, but will the growth of the sharing economy affect the viability of new properties? Last year Dublin had its highest occupancy levels in 10 years. In a case study conducted by Airbnb last year, when Dublin had 2,960 qualifying properties which hosted 143,000 guests. The income earned was €17.3 million and the direct guest spending in Dublin was estimated to be €96.4 million. In Galway, 470 hosts welcomed 32,000 guests and earned €2.2 million. Direct spending in Galway was €9.6 million. The top international destinations are London, Milan and Tokyo. In the first six months 50,000 employees of 5,000 businesses completed bookings. Not surprisingly San Francisco topped the list of the most travelled to destination. Big hotel groups plan to win back business from Airbnb by launching new chains aimed squarely at the core market: millennials who are looking for an experience suited to their tastes and budget. Hotels in the US are lobbying for laws that would slow down or stop the growth by restricting homes that can be listed. The IHF’s Tim Fenn believes that “disruption is okay as long as it is good for society and fair. The IHF would like to see all tourism accommodation regulated and have quality assurance, and guest safety and taxation should be the same for everyone. “We have worked hard to make Ireland a tourism destination with a quality product which people enjoy,” he said.

TORQUING CARS! THE 2017 TOYOTA C-HR, A SOFT ROADER DEBUTS AT THE GENEVA AUTO SHOW.

We’re still light on details, especially when it comes to the eventual U.S.-market specs, but the C-HR is what Toyota is referring to as a “five-door coupe” and promises an “engaged driving experience combined with a contemporary high-riding driving position,” whatever that means. What we expect is a baby RAV4, as Toyota currently doesn’t offer anything below its current compact CUV. The soft-roader is built on the modular Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA) platform. Technical details are still few and far between, but we know for sure that we’re going to see a hybrid model fitted with tech borrowed from the fourth-generation Prius that was introduced a couple of months ago along with a 1.2L turbo variant (the same powertrain found in the Toyota Auris). Front- and all-wheel drive will be available, depending on the market. Toyota calls the exterior styling a “diamond architecture theme,” with faceted details playing into an overall angular look. Front and rear LED lighting will be available, and we think those will best suit the small crossover’s styling. For a small crossover, the chassis does sound promising. The rear suspension will be a multi-link setup (at least in Europe), where most vehicles in this class rely on torsion-beam configurations. This should give the little Toyota a leg up in driving dynamics. Toyota’s next crossover was presented online i recently , and itt made its global debut at the Geneva Auto Show . The U.S.-spec model was poised to become Scion’s first-ever crossover, but Toyota has recently announced plans to axe its struggling youth-oriented sub-division before the end of the year. Consequently, the C-HR will be sold through Toyota dealerships.

VOLVO TO INTRODUCE THE KEYLESS CAR IN 2017

VOLVO has announced plans to become the first car manufacturer to offer cars without keys next year. Buyers of the company’s models will be able to instead use a smartphone app, which will to replace the physical key with a digital key. Volvo believes that the Bluetooth-enabled digital key technology will offer its customers more flexibility and enable them to benefit from new ways to use and share cars. The digital key on the new app will do everything that a physical key currently does, including locking or unlocking the doors or the boot, and allowing the engine to be started. The technology also means that customers can save more than one digital key to their app, allowing them to use other Volvos. This means that owners could rent a Volvo anywhere in the world, with the rental company sending a digital key to their phone. On arriving at an airport, for example, they could use GPS to find the car, unlock it and drive away – without ever having to go to a rental desk or office. Digital keys can also be sent to family members or co-workers, enabling them to borrow the owner’s car.The technology will be piloted this spring at its car-sharing firm, Sunfleet, based at Gothenburg airport in Sweden. A limited number of commercially available cars will then be equipped with the new digital key technology in 2017. However, physical keys will still continue to be offered for people who want them.

FAI NATIONAl P.R.O. OF THE YEAR WAS IT A SKIRMISH OR A BATTLE IN TRALEE? Before we look at the Kerry versus Donegal Allianz League game we must mention the new Austin Stacks Park. I only watched the game on television but it looked very well and I have heard the management and players complimenting the pitch. This is a great credit to the grounds staff as I presume they didn’t factor in all the bad weather and seven storms into the work schedule! So to have the pitch in such a fine state for the opening double header was a testament to their skills. Following the game there was some negative comment from supporters over the toilets, a muddy entrance and no tea and coffee facilities available. With the double header, the u21’s and another League game due this week I am sure the emphasis was on getting the stadium open and as much as possible finished. I am sure the rest of the building work will be finished shortly and there is no doubt that one of the many Tralee entrepreneurs will soon be selling tea and coffee and more at the Stadium!! Back to the game and it certainly was a fractious affair. 10 cards (two red, two black and six yellow) were flashed by the overworked referee Eddie Kinsella. Was there much more he could have done? Maybe he could have sent players off in the 4th minute when Donaghy and Murphy clashed and were joined by others but it is tough for a referee to do so that early in the game. Sadly the players took this as an opening to behave very poorly and we all saw the result. The referee awarded 59 frees in the game, 3227 to Kerry in 70 minutes so there was not a lot more he could do. On the sending off of Alan Fitzgerald the question is what else could the Kerry player have done? With Neil McGee trying to bend back his fingers he had to try and free himself. Maybe he could have hit the Donegal man into the ribs rather than the face but that’s a split second decision. It’s also hard to blame the umpires who would not have been looking for something like this. One has also to say that McLoone’s red card was soft in terms of what was going on all over the pitch. The question continues on why Kerry are more susceptible to black cards than other teams? Here Shane Enright and Denis Daly ended up with early showers. The black card was brought in to stop cynical play. So are Kerry more cynical than other counties – I don’t think so. So are Kerry more honest in being cynical – maybe. Other counties players are maybe better at hiding their cynicism!! Maybe something for them to work on behind closed doors in training!! From a positive point of view the Kerry forwards were scoring, the goal was an excellent one and Brian Sheehan’s free was a thing of beauty. Winning a tough game like this will have done wonders for the squad. You can be sure that once the door of the dressing room was closed the management and squad will be off one voice and that is that no one will bully us this year. But this mask’s a bigger question for the game. Kerry kicked one point from play from the 13 they scored. The rest were either

frees or punched over the bar. It really is not ‘football’ any more. And I wonder why they have increased the height of the posts when so few balls are kicked that high!! Indeed the posts are now so high – and maybe it’s for the hurlers – that they are moving about in the wind which could lead to fun if it causes a ball to go wide. Football is in a state of flux and it seems that the powers that be can’t agree on which way to go. The mark is coming in after congress but players have not embraced the idea. Nothing is being done to limit the number of hand passes and who knows the right interpretation of the tackle and the black card? So football fans can expect more games like this with very close marking spilling over in what we saw with neither side willing to back down. However at the end of the day for the majority of fans it’s the results that count and if Kerry bring home Sam the battle in Tralee will only be remembered as being a day that the team stood up and were counted. On the Line: One thing that must be addressed by the GAA is the number of people allowed on the line. The behaviour of the Donegal manager last Sunday was nothing but antagonistic and should have been dealt with the by the officials. But why does there need to be such an entourage with the manager on the line - Subs, other management, County Board officials? Soccer does not do everything right but the side line is one where their experience should be followed. One manager allowed to stand and the rest in the dug-out. Maybe with football being faster two officials could be allowed in a technical area. Much too often we have seen managers out onto the field. The GAA authority needs to tackle this but they it seems no one wants to grasp that nettle. PARNELLS NEWS: Players involved with the 12’s/ 14’s and 16’s can check the clubs Facebook page for all the latest fixtures. Well Attended Coursing Course: There was a great turnout for the club’s foundation/ refreshers hurling coaching course which was run by David O’Dea. The mix of regular coaches doing the refresher section and several moms and dads taking the foundation course it all bodes well for the club in the coming seasons with 2016 looking to be the busiest to date. March for Parnells: The committee is looking for as many as possible to take part in next week’s St Patrick’s Day Parade. This will be the third year for the club to take part. Each year the club brings along portable goals and our keepers try to stop shots from children along the route. This was featured on the RTE News Parades round up last year. The club hopes for another big turn out this Thursday. The Kerry Camogie Quiz was a great success as well as the launch of the ‘Golden Ticket’ on the night. There are photos on the enjoyable evening in Kerins O’Rahilly’ clubhouse on the club Facebook page. Date for the Diary: The club has blocked out Saturday September 3rd – the eve of the AllIreland Hurling Final – for the Parnells 2016 Club Day / Monster Blitz.

Friday 11th March 2016

CAMOGIE NEWS: The County Senior began their League campaign with a home 1-02 to 0.05 draw against Roscommon in Caraslee. (One has to question the wisdom of the GAA to have the Kerry footballer, hurlers, Ladies and Camogie team all at home at the same time!). The girls are at home again this weekend when the face Dublin with the time and venue to be decided after we go to print. Minor C Championship: This team is at home to Cavan this Saturday with the venue to be decided. Kerry camogie have launched a ‘Golden Ticket’ fundraiser, the biggest initiative to raise funds for the sport. They also have two games left in the St Brendan’s League. Registration: Any members who have not paid their registration or that of their familes should do so as soon as possible. Scor an bPaisti: The club wishes all those taking part in Scorn a bPaisti this Friday the best of luck. SOCIAL SUCCESS FOR RAHILLY’S: Kerins O’Rahilly’s members enjoyed a very successful social at Fels Point with over 200 sitting down to a great night with the u21 County Championship team being the main focus as they were presented with their medals by County Board Chairman Pat O’Sullivan accompanied by club Chairman Frank O’Connor and team manager Ray Walsh. Other presentations on the night went to Con Barrett as Senior Footballer of the Year, Most Improved Player Diarmuid O’Sullivan and Young Player of the Year and Kerry u21 captain Jack Savage. Peter Ronan and Mrs Margaret O’Connor who has attended almost every social, bar a few in the 50’s, were honoured for their unswerving support for the club. Best dressed lady on

The attendance danced the night away to a top DJ – Chris Shortt! Seniors Win: The Seniors defeated Na Gaeil 3-10 to 1-13 in the Tralee District Board with a last minute goal from David McLoughlin being the difference. Rahilly’s were ahead with two early goals but Na Gaeil fought back and even saved a penalty that would have extended Rahilly’s lead. It looked like being a draw until McLoughlin scored following a great move. Minors: In Round 2 of County Minor League Rahilly’s went down 1-05 to 2-11 to a string Dr Crokes side. They are due to play Listowel Emmets this Saturday in Strand Road at 4pm. Juvenile News: Training continues as usual this week. Railway B defeated Huddle B by the same score in Group B with Broderick’s Bar also winning in this group with a 5-2 victory over Complex Abbeydorney. Parkers B, Dew Drop Inn Lixnaw and Boland’s Bar were the winners in Group C. Parkers B beat Keanes Bar Causeway 4-3, Dew Drop were 4-3 winners over Huddle C and Bolands won 4-3 over Railway Bar B. The action continues this Friday night in all 3 groups. GARVEY’S SEASON OVER: Team Garvey’s season is over following their 57-41 defeat to Team Den Joes American Style Castleisalnd in the Women’s Division 1 quarter final. Garvey’s were well in the game up to half time and indeed will be wondering how they were not ahead at the break. However a third quarter blitz by the home side opened a gap that Garvey’s girls were not able to close. Credit to the Tralee team they battled to the end but as coach Liam Culloty said they were not able to keep up their high energy levels for the whole game. “We just didn’t have the strength to stay with Den Joes when they opened up in the 3rd quarter. However I must thank the girls for their efforts especially after Mark Bernsen had to return to the States for family reasons. It is great for the club and a business as big as Garvey’s to come together to make sure National League basketball is played in Tralee. We will be back again next year”. BRENDAN’S BOYS BASKETBALL CHAMPIONS: St Brendan’s Boys are u12 Division 1 champions after two big wins this week. Firstly they saw off the previously unbeaten St Bridget’s in a cracking game in Moyderwell. St Brendan’s got off to the better start at both ends. This set the trend of the game with

tough defence holding the visitors to 23 points. On offence the boys played patiently and ended up on 31 to take the win with Andrew Wallace the top scorer on 10 followed by Edward Sheehy on 9 and Jack Doyle with 5. They wrapped up the League will a 2 point away win over TK Cougars 20-18. This sees the team complete the double as they had won the Cup last month. St Brendan’s got ff to a slow start and were 6-1 down after the first quarter. Baskets were hard to come by with both sides playing top defence but St Brendan’s had levelled the game by the break. There was nothing between the sides in the second half with TK leading by 2 with one quarter to play. St Brendan’s were 1 point ahead when Edward Sheehy hit one of two from the free throw line to seal victory and wrap up a great year for the team and coach Tony Griffin. St Brendan’s u16 Division were certainly up for the game against St Paul’s as they were at the doors of the Aura before they were open!! They controlled the game and were 36-23 up at the end of a high scoring first half. They continued to lead into the fourth quarter where they really took over and in the end won 71-40. David McCarthy certainly had his eye in hitting 22 with Jason Moloney ending with 18 and Adam Manley and Lawrence Guardiano both on 10. In other game the u14 Division 1 side defeated Gneeveguilla 52-47 to stay top of the League while the u12 Division 3 team did the double over Kenmare Kestrels 21-13 and 30-10 while the 16 Division 3 side when down to Gneeveguilla 35-37. ON THE GREENS: Castlegregory Golf Club: In the Men’s18 Hole Stableford sponsored by CC Cleaners Joe Mulcahy took the win on 37 points. Richie Greer was second on 36 points with Michael O’Connor 3rd on 32 points. The Front 9 prize was won by Stephen Hennessy with 20 points and the Back Nine to Mike Burrows with 18 points. The Ladies Club Weekly competition, an 18 hole re-entry was won by Alana Rowan while the Seniors 10 Hole Stableford went to Sean Lyons with 19 points.

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... TRALEE COMPANY FREEFLOW AND FEXCO, KILLORGLIN WIN BEST MANAGED COMPANIES AWARDS

Deloitte’s network of Best Managed Companies now employs over 47,000 people around the country and has a combined turnover of almost €10bn. These figures were released by Deloitte to mark the 2016 Best Managed Companies awards last night in Dublin. Recognising the importance of overseas markets for Irish companies, the Best Managed Companies also recorded an average growth in export sales of 161% over the last three years. Two Kerry companies were recognised this week at the 2016 Best Managed Companies awards in Dublin. They were Killorglin’s FEXCO which was named Best Managed for the first time, and Freeflow, Tralee ,which was awarded platinum standard , now having retained the award for seven consecutive years

The awards event in Dublin’s Convention Centre marked the eighth year of the Deloitte Best Managed Companies awards programme, in association with Barclays Bank Ireland. The awards were attended by over 800 people from the Irish business community. Frank Ryan, chair of the independent judging panel, was keynote speaker on the night. First time recipients of the award shared the stage with platinum award winners - companies that have retained their Best Managed status for seven consecutive years. Sixteen companies from around Ireland were awarded Best Managed status for the first time this year, following a lengthy qualification and judging process in which the complete performance of a business is assessed, moving beyond finances to such areas as operational excellence, strategy, and human resource processes. Almost 40% of the first time winners came from the technology and media industries, with 20% coming from the construction sector. The Deloitte Best Managed Companies Awards, in association with Barclays Bank Ireland, is open to companies from all 32 counties on the island of Ireland. It is the only awards programme that considers a business’ performance from every perspective. Details of entry for the 2016/2017 programme will be issued in the coming weeks on www.deloittebestmanaged.ie. The Best Managed designation is an important marketing tool for the winning companies – but, perhaps most importantly, the awards provide a reason to celebrate the efforts of the entire company.

I am happy to say that it does in fact exist and there are many more benefits than the lack of sand in your shoes, much more indeed. I suffer from repetitive sinus infections and I would always turn to over the counter medications to help relieve my symptoms but it would only be a matter of time before the infection would come back again so I wanted to find a lasting solution to address the root cause. A friend suggested I try the salt rooms. I was curious as to how salt would help so I did a little research before hand and it all seemed to make sense. When you hear about salt people shoot arrows about high salt intake but salt is actually very good for you. It carries nutrients to your cells and improves brain function but it is the type of salt that matters in all of this. In learning that the salt rooms in Tralee uses the highest quality of salt sourced from natural salt caves I knew I had to check this place out and so I did. Let’s just say I was impressed. The owner Stas or the “friendly giant” as I like to call him now was so helpful and kind; as first impressions go he aced it. As a newbie I didn’t know what to expect but I was excited. I was escorted by the “friendly giant” into a dark room with chairs that had leg rests and there was a big screen that played a 5 minute guided meditation followed by the most amazing videos of natural beauty all around the world and not forgetting the main reason why I was there, to breathe in the salt.

I was so mesmerized by my relaxed surroundings the salt just appeared as if it was the most natural thing in the world. I had to return for a few sessions because I wanted to clear my sinus fully but it was only a pleasure to do so. It was also interesting to meet people and to hear their reasons for using the salt rooms; it was there I learned even more benefits to this wonderful therapy. People with asthma, long time smokers, people with skin problems to people with just a common cold. The reason I am writing this now is because I have become aware of how unaware people are that this hidden gem in the heart of Tralee exists. I regard this as a huge shame because I have seen what it has done first hand for me and others.

A room in Tralee where you can sit back, relax and breathe in salt air without getting sand everywhere... Who would have thought it?

Ireland is a damp country as we all know and people suffer with their respiratory systems because of this but it needn’t be this way especially with therapies like this.

I cleared my sinus fully so I return to Stas now if I feel a cold or flu coming on and it stops it in its tracks so I don’t have to take to bed for a few days . Imagine being able to treat a male in your life before he starts to complain about full on “man flu” …imagine no more. Head down to Stass at HaloTherapy, 6 Market Lane, Tralee, Co. Kerry and try it out for yourself.
