BROGUE LINES UP ANOTHER”ABSOLUTE 80’S NIGHT “ WITH CHRIS SHORTT THIS WEEKEND

After a great response to the previous “ABSOLUTE 8O’S NIGHTS in the Brogue , Saturday the 21st May , its going to happen again !! Yes, the Brogue Inn is playing host to ANOTHER late night “ Absolute Eighties” session with well -known local DJ Chris Shortt .”We wanted to try something a little bit different , as we are now having entertainment up to 7 nights a week in the Brogue “ says Fiona Kirby .So Chris came up with the idea of an “Absolute 80’s Night “ which we thought was brilliant . According to Chris , “these nights really rock .....People who I haven’t seen in years come out purely to hear the great songs of the 80’s ....It really brings the great memories flooding back “ says Chris .... I grew up with the music of the 80’s , a lot of the crowd who come out on Sat night to the Brogue are very familiar with this music and even a lot of the younger generation in their 20s and 30’s are really into that decade of Music ....we are talking Bob Marley , The Police , Deacon Blue , Simple Minds , Dire Straits , Abba , the list goes on ...Remember MT USA with Fab Vinny ...we are talking Michael Jackson , Van Halen, The Pointer Sisters , Starship , The Eagles , Fleetwood mac . Chris really knows his music , he has been the Rose Ball DJ for many many years now “ says Kevin Cotter .from the Brogue ..”.it only makes sense to have someone who knows the 80’s music back to front entertaining our customers rather than having someone working from a Playlist!” Hopefully AGAIN on the night , we will find other people who know their music as the Brogue have some lovely tasty prizes from Cobblers Restaurant , and their Piano Bar upstairs as well as from the Carvery downstairs “ So remember this Saturday night the 21st May is “ABSOLUTE 80’S NIGHT with Chris Shortt in the Brogue

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... LIADH NÍ RIADA MEP VISITS TRALEE AND WEST KERRY

On Friday last , 13th May 2016 Liadh Ni Riada MEP visited Kerry. It was a busy schedule for the MEP visiting the Mercy MountHawk School in Tralee followed by a meeting with representatives from the Brandon/Clochan Cooperative, local Cllr for South and West Kerry Damian Quigg accompanied Liadh to the meeting, Michéal O Dowd, a local business man gave a comprehensive overview around the massive depopulation of the area and trying to keep a community alive and businesses open, not an easy task when footfall isn’t there. Caherdaniel and Clochan were recorded in the last census as being the two most depopulated areas in Kerry. The Cooperative believe, that through investments from the EU, restocking the local river there would be huge potential for the tourism industry to help regenerate the Clochan area. Clochan is on the Wild Atlantic Way which is a huge plus and through angling tourism there would be a huge opportunity for job creation. Liadh Ni Riada acknowledged this and gave a detailed summary as to where within the EU this possibility could be funded and become a reality, she also spoke about the type of criteria required for a community to be considered for such funding, Cllr Damian Quigg assured the community that he would provide whatever support that he could through his roll as an elected member of the local authority and would be consulting Deputy Martin Ferris in relation to their meeting so that he could also engage with the Dept of Agriculture and the Marine to explore the possibilities of Government funding for this project. Overall this was a very positive meeting and the MEPs visit to the County was a visit that gave a glare of hope to the people of Clochan.

TRALEE LOCAL AUTHORITY HOMES TO BENEFIT FROM FREE ENERGY UPGRADE

A free energy upgrade of almost 650 local authority homes is under way throughout County Kerry as part of the Smart Technology Energy Saving Scheme from Irish home technology company climote. The work has commenced recently in Kerry and will be completed over the coming months in almost 650 homes spread throughout the entire Kerry County Council area. The Smart Technology Energy Saving Scheme will see approximately 650 homes throughout Kerry fitted with a climote remote control heating system to enable families take full control of the energy used in their homes. Nationally the scheme will see 10,000 homes across Ireland fitted with a climote. Delivered by home technology company climote, and funded by Electric Ireland, the Smart Technology Energy Saving Scheme is a ground-breaking initiative which sees the collaboration of the public and private sectors in delivering an innovative energy efficient scheme based on the use of smart technology. Launched at the start of the year by the Minister for the Environment Alan Kelly T.D. and at no cost to the exchequer or individual local authorities, 10,000 local authority and housing association homes will be fitted with a climote which will allow homeowners to control their heating timings and temperature via a smartphone, text message or online. This type of technology has been proven to reduce energy consumption through better energy management. Eamon Conway, Managing Director of climote said, “climote is delighted to be working with Kerry County Council on this ground-breaking energy saving scheme in partnership with Electric Ireland. Nationally we are working in partnership with Electric Ireland and the various housing agencies and local authorities to allow climote’s smart technology enable homeowners control their heating timings and temperature via their smartphone, text message or online. The real benefit for families in Kerry is that they can benefit from climote’s energy saving technology, while for the Council and the Government, the entire scheme is funded by industry.” The nationwide scheme was brought to the attention of Kerry County Council by Cllr. Niall Kelleher (Fianna Fáil) who was anxious that Kerry would not miss out on the free Smart Technology Energy Saving Scheme.

THE GOLF DOC WANTS YOUR OLD CADDY CAR !

Just in case you think that the only way you can avail of ‘Scrappage ‘ is to book a brand new 162 Toyota ,Ford ,or Hyundai , then James ‘The Golf Doc’ wants you to think again . He has just launched an innovative ‘Scrappage’ scheme for your ailing electric Golf Trolley . “ We are offering all our customers the chance to trade in their current electric Golf Caddy , (regardless of condition or age ) and we will allow them €100 off a brand new one in May and June . We carry all the top makes such as Powakaddy , MotoCaddy etc “ “It makes great sense” says James , “when you think the cost of replacing the battery alone is €100, it makes sense to renew rather than repair . Especially when the scrappage allowance can be up to 25% of the cost of a new trolley “ We have had customers come in with Caddy Cars that are 25 and 30 years old , and walk out with a brand new one , delighted that their faithful servant Caddy Car was still able to give them value after all these years ! And we also had golfers with pretty new trolleys who simply want to upgrade to the latest model which we stock . So head on down to Matt Talbot Road where the Golf Doc is (Beside Gleasures Funeral Home) and why not treat yourself . James currently also has a great offer of a dozen golf balls FREE when you have your clubs regripped from as low as €80 .

TECHNOLOGY CORNER Billy O Meara (HRI Services)

Billy simplifies and explains Todays Technology Question:

What is IPTV?

IPTV is Internet protocol television which is a system where you receive your television service through your broadband and not from satellite or aerial. There are two main service providers which are Eir and Vodafone TV. There are also unofficial provides online which can provide this service but they can suffer from service interruptions and buffering issues. You can install these services on your laptop or android device prices range for €7 to €25 per month. There are also free IPTV services, but the quality of picture tends to be poor quality. Most of the online services are not licenced so buyer beware. Question:

What do Virus, Spyware & Trojans do?

Everyone knows viruses and Trojans are bad, but a lot of people don’t know how exactly they work. Viruses, for example, are programs that copy themselves and infect a computer, spreading from one to another—just like, well, a real life virus there are designed to disable your device. Trojans on the other hand, are applications that look normal, but secretly have code that’s doing something else, like letting someone else control your computer. Spyware is designed to steal your information. To prevent your device from getting infected use a good Internet Security like ESET Security which have local Irish call center.

Syringing could and in many cases, did cause issues such as otitis media (middle ear infection), Otitis Externa (outer ear infection), perforation of the ear drum and trauma to the external auditory meatus (the ear canal). Not just that, it actually wasn’t very effective at removing the earwax in many cases. That is why the procedure was generally abandoned several years ago. Most earwax removal undertaken in Ireland is now done with an irrigation system. Irrigation is Safer than Syringing Of course, modern irrigation is safer than syringing, however there are still the possibility of some of the same complications arising. It can cause Otitis Media and Otitis Externa, but there is little chance of perforation of the eardrum. Many Patients complain though that it is an uncomfortable process. Because water is used it can also sometimes be messy. This is why we were determined to introduce microsuction earwax removal to our Practice. Microsuction Earwax Removal Service Introducing microsuction to our Practice allowed us to introduce completely safe, effective and comfortable earwax removal in the comfort of our Practice. Microsuction involves no introduction of liquid or any other material to the ear canal which completely ensures that no infection is introduced. It also means that there is no chance of over pressure bursting the eardrum. Because we can clearly see what we are doing through the microscope the chance of injury to the ear canal or eardrum is reduced. We are committed to ensuring that we offer cutting edge audiological services to our Patients. For us, the decision to introduce microsuction earwax removal to our Practices was an easy one. Audiology Medical Services at the Bon Secours Hospital and Scotia House Tralee is Kerry’s only independently audited hearing centre of excellence. AMS is the exclusive supplier of the Lyric Hearing Aid which can be worn 24/7, even in the shower and without having to change batteries. For free trial of the Lyric Hearing Aid or to book an appointment for Microsuction, call 1800 501 501.

BON SECOURS HOSPITAL TRALEE UNVEILED AS NEW MAJOR PARTNER TO 33RD ANNUAL RING OF KERRY CYCLE THE sun put its hat on to welcome the ‘wheelie’ good news that Bon Secours Hospital Tralee have been unveiled as a major partner for this year’s Ring of Kerry Cycle.

On Saturday July the 2nd over 10,000 cyclists will take on the challenge of completing the 112 miles of the spectacular Ring of Kerry, one of the largest one-day charity fundraising events in the Country. The CEO of Bon Secours Hospital Tralee, Niall Donnelly, said: “The Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle is a fantastic fundraising event in the county. It is a community event that is run on a voluntary basis and generates millions of euro for worthwhile Kerry Charities. We are delighted to be involved in the 2016 cycle and wish all cyclists taking part the best of luck with their training and fundraising.” The fundraising event attracts thousands of leisure cyclists from Ireland and overseas who will experience a fun and rewarding day’s cycling, while at the same time fundraising for worthy Kerry based Charities. To date the Ring of Kerry Cycle has raised over €10.2 million for Kerry Charities. Last year, in excess of €1.85 million was raised for different charities in Kerry. The designated charities for the 2016 edition are: Derrynane Inshore Rescue, Irish Kidney Association, Pieta House-Suicide and Self Harm Crisis Centre, Recovery Haven Kerry, South West Counselling Services Killarney, St Francis Special School, St Joseph’s Nursing Home in Killorglin, St Ita’s and St Joseph’s Post Primary Special School in Tralee and Talbot Grove. Cathal Walshe, PRO of the Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle, said: “This year we are delighted to have the Bon Secours Tralee on board as a partner and we really appreciate the support they are providing. We’ve been working hard preparing for the 2016 edition of the Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle and this year’s event is shaping up to be the best yet. Not alone does this event benefit worthwhile charities at a local level, but bringing 10,000 cyclists and their supporters to the area provides a huge local economic boost.” Hundreds of volunteers give their time and huge effort to the organising and running of the event which is now in its 33rd year. GREAT REACTION IN TRALEE TO BOI’S SATURDAY OPEN MORTGAGE DAY. According to Branch Manager , Gerry Enright “There was a very significant increase in the meeting numbers and everybody was delighted with the opportunity to discuss probably their most important financial decision with our qualified Mortgage Advisers. A snapshot of some of the people who availed of BOI’s Open Mortgage Saturday were:•

Employee of a local large employer who can’t get in during the week. • Employee of a local large employer who works away from base during the week. • Self employed entrepreneur & Spouse,... they couldn’t get in together during week and they both wanted to attend. Both ourselves in BOI Tralee and our customers were delighted with the day and we look forward to holding another Open Saturday soon.”

A PROPER AMBULANCE SERVICE ... A BASIC NEED IN RURAL AREAS SAYS FERRIS

Sinn Féin TD for Kerry Martin Ferris, reacting to the National Ambulance Service capacity review, said that the ambulance service has to be properly resourced including with co-ordinates technology in vehicles. Deputy Ferris said: “A proper ambulance service is a basic need in rural Ireland, but we have not got that. It is clear that the people working in the service and their trade unions have a positive and constructive role to play in improving it and suggesting better ways to make it work. “Every ambulance in the country should, by now, be using co-ordinates technology and there has to be investment to support this in vehicles and control rooms. “The national ambulance service is under pressure and working with fewer resources. The state has a responsibility to provide basic services and the ambulance service is one of them. This is the case whether you live in the centre of Dublin or in a rural area. “The Lightfoot report has found that HIQA targets cannot be met and this means that more resources must be allocated to the service, especially in rural areas where communities are being forced to rely on already reduced hospital services. “I am calling on Simon Harris to implement the recommendations of the report without delay. Delay costs lives in this case.” 20

Colette & Chris and all in The Tralee Advertiser

TRALEE BUSINESS TELL KERRY CO. CO. TO GO BACK TO THE DRAWING BOARD ! After multiple meetings with Tralee business people this week , Kerry County Council have been encouraged to seriously look again at their proposed plans for redevelopment of the Town Centre and traffic plan issues

Two well attended Meetings were held this week in The Grand Hotel, hosted by Save Tralee and Tralee Chamber Alliance , On Wednesday , Tralee Chamber Alliance , invited its Members to hear a Presentation made by KCC Engineer, Eamonn Scanlon, on the proposed Town Centre traffic and parking changes. • There was no doubting the mood in the room. KCC have so obviously gotten their plans hugely wrong. There is zero appetite for it , as speaker after speaker pointed to the inadequacies of the Councils proposal. • Mr. Scanlon was advised by all present, that KCC must revisit and revise the entire plan and revert , ASAP, with the revisions proposed. Otherwise the entire proposal , should be dropped. • Presumably, TCA, will act in early course, to ensure that their Members wishes are adhered to! • Another meeting is planned for next Monday evening in the Grand Hotel with local representatives and Politicians to see what they can bring to the table

HEALTHY RECIPES for 2016

Summertime is Sorbet time! With the beautiful weather we have had and hopefully much more to come , here is something cool for you to make! I have had a few emails about sorbets, as sorbet machines are great value to buy now and easy to use. So here are my top tips for making a lovely sorbet ...... and remember to drop by the blog for recipes and much more from some of the best people in the restaurants and hotels around Kerry www.traleeculinarygangsters.wordpress.com

THE GOLDEN RULE OF GREAT SORBET: Start with good fruit and don’t screw it up.... Sugar doesn’t just sweeten sorbet—it’s also responsible for sorbet’s structure When you dissolve sugar in water you get a syrup with a lower freezing point than water alone Remember the golden rule of sorbet! Use good fruit. No, scratch that—use the best fruit you can find Fruit high in pectin (berries, stone fruit, and grapes) or fiber (mangoes, pears, and bananas) are high in viscosity and full of body That’s because pectin and fiber act as thickeners Also pay attention to how much sugar your chosen fruit brings to a sorbet. Sweet strawberry purée needs less added sugar than tart lemon juice Four cups fruit purée to one cup sugar. That’s really all you need to know You’ll also have to add acid (lemon or lime juice are best) and salt to taste This ratio is simply a starting point; use your own taste as your ultimate guide cooking fruit concentrates flavor, drives off water for a creamier final texture But when I make sorbet I want it to taste like nothing but fresh fruit at its absolute best!!

INGREDIENTS

METHOD

• • • •

1.

2 1/2 pounds strawberries, washed 1 cup sugar 2 teaspoons lemon juice, to taste 1/2 teaspoon sea salt, to taste

2.

Remove tops from strawberries and purée in a blender or food processor until smooth. . Add sugar and blend for 30 seconds. Add lemon and salt, blend to incorporate, and adjust to taste. Strain purée and transfer to refrigerator; chill for 2 to 3 hours until very cold. Churn sorbet in ice cream maker according to manufacturer’s instructions. Transfer sorbet to freezer to firm up for 2 to 3 hours before serving Recipes by

Bexblah Beauty This page is sponsored by Munster Robes & Kitchens

Hello my beautiful friends! I hope you’re all having a great week. This week I’m going to be talking all my current skincare favourites, face and body!

1. 2. 3.

Claris Super Restorative Hand Cream: You know what they say, your hands give away your age, so it’s important to keep them moisturised. When you use this hand cream often, it helps reduce the appearance of age spots and even helps keep your nails strong. Nuxe Nuxellence Detox Night Cream: this nightly detox is suitable for all ages and skin types. It uses 10 patents to recharge your skin and detoxify your cells overnight. It actually promotes cell renewal so I find I wake up with my face glowing. It’s also packed with all natural ingredients which is a huge plus.

The Body Shop Body Butter: I have recently started making more of an effort to moisturise my body at least once a day. These body butters are super affordable and available in so many different flavours which I love.

4.

5.

Soap and Glory Smoothie Star Breakfast Scrub: This body exfoliator is definitely one of my favourites. It smells absolutely amazing, it’s a great price and it’s usually on 3 for 2 in Boots.

Kiehls Calendula Deep Cleansing Foaming Face Wash: I have been using this everyday, twice a day since December and I love it! It gets rid of dirt, impurities and oil without stripping the skin so it’s great for those with sensitive skin. It leaves my skin so smooth and soft. I have only gone through a bottle and a half since December, and it’s only around €25, 100% worth it.

Stay Gorge,

Bexblah. Attention BexBlah Readers!

Refilling regular plastic bottles isn’t the best so I got myself one of these and I love it. It holds a litre of water so I know exactly how much I’m drinking. I’ve had it over a year and all you have to do is change the filter every few months.

MY FITNESS PAL APP

I use this app to track all my food, even the bad stuff so that I am always accountable.

HEADPHONES

I use this for my protein shakes after the gym, it’s quick and easy and my one is pink so it looks pretty, always a bonus.

NIKE FREE’S

Again any style gym shoe will work for you depending on your training, but I am absolutely OBSESSED with the Nike Free’s. They are SO comfortable.

Recently I’ve made the switch from cow’s milk to almond milk. When I was in California I drank this brand one and I can get it here in Dublin and it tastes fab. I’m not a fan of the Alpro Soya one though.

Obviously you can use any headphones you like for the gym but I love these Marley in ear ones. They’re grey and pretty and I love the Marley brand in general.

LAUGHTER ....THE BEST MEDICINE ! IN THE WOODS

MAHATMA GANDHI,

A blonde, a brunette, and a redhead were walking through the woods one night when they happened upon some tracks. “I think they’re moose tracks!”, said the blonde. “No, they’re deer tracks!”, said the brunette. “Nuh uh, these are elk tracks!”, chirped the redhead.

as you know, walked barefoot most of the time, which produced an impressive set of calluses on his feet. He also ate very little, which made him rather frail and with his odd diet, he suffered from bad breath. This made him. (Oh, man, this is so bad, it’s good. . .) A super calloused fragile mystic hexed by halitosis.

Obama declares: Our submarines can stay submerged for ten days before needing air. Putin promptly says: That’s nothing. Russian submarines can stay submerged for up to a month. Merkel is embarrassed and stays silent. Suddenly a submarine emerges. The hatch opens and the man yells: Heil Hitler! Is the war over?

A MAN ASKS A FARMER NEAR A FIELD,

A man asks a farmer near a field, “Sorry sir, would you mind if I crossed your field instead of going around it? You see, I have to catch the 4:23 train.” The farmer says, “Sure, go right ahead. And if my bull sees you, you’ll even catch the 4:11 one.”

SO THREE OLD MEN MET ON A SUNDAY MORNING...

“Sixty is the worst age to be,” said the 60-year-old man. “You always feel like you have to pee and most of the time you stand there and nothing comes out.” “Ah, that’s nothin,” said the 70-year-old. “When you’re seventy, you don’t have a bowel movement any more. You take laxatives, eat bran, sit on the toilet all day and nothin’ comes out!” “Actually,” said the 80-year -old, “Eighty is the worst age of all.” “Do you have trouble peeing, too?” asked the 60-year old. “No, I pee every morning at 6:00. I pee like a racehorse on a flat rock: no problem at all.” “So, do you have a problem with your bowel movement?” “No, I have one every morning at 6:30.” Exasperated, the 60-year-old said, “You pee every morning at 6:00 and crap every morning at 6:30. So what’s so bad about being 80?” “I don’t wake up until 7:00.”

TORQUING CARS! JAMIE VARDY’S OLD MERCEDES FOR SALE

Premier League goalscoring sensation, Leicester City striker Jamie Vardy, used to own this C63 AMG that’s now being sold for £38,500 A Mercedes formerly owned by Leicester City footballer Jamie Vardy, who has gone from virtual non-entity to the country’s leading goalscorer, has been put on sale. The 2013 Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG in white with a black leather interior has just over 14,000 miles on the clock as is for sale for £38,500 on the Autotrader website. The seller stands to make only a small premium from the car’s celebrity status - most similar cars on the website are pitched at £35,000 to £36,000. The ex-Vardy C63 AMG comes with a limited edition packet of crisps produced by Leicesterbased Walkers, which produced a special batch of ready salted crisps to celebrate Vardy’s record-breaking feat this season of scoring in 11 consecutive Premier League games as he helped steer Leicester City FC to an unlikely championship title.

THE GRAND TOUR, JEREMY CLARKSON’S AMAZON SHOW: WHEN WILL IT START, WHICH CARS WILL THEY BE DRIVING AND HOW SIMILAR WILL IT BE TO TOP GEAR? All the latest news and rumours from Jeremy Clarkson’s new Amazon Prime car show The new series of Top Gear has been attracting a lot of attention of late, what with the announcement of the presenting line-up and a drone catching members of the new team filming muscle cars in Scotland. However, it’s not the only new motoring show coming this year; there will also be a series presented by a certain Jeremy Clarkson, James May and Richard Hammond, called The Grand Tour.Last July, the trio signed with online streaming service Amazon Prime, after the BBC decided not to renew Clarkson’s contract following his”fracas” with a producer. However, it’s only more recently that details of the new show have started to emerge. Here’s what we know so far. What’s the new Clarkson, Hammond and May show called? It has been confirmed that the new show will be called The Grand Tour, referencing the fact that the presenters will travel the world, with each episode taking place in a different country. When can I watch Clarkson, Hammond and May on Amazon? Clarkson, Hammond and May have signed up to present three 12-episode series, with each episode set to be roughly 60 minutes in length. The show will debut in the autumn, and will be available to anyone who has signed up to Amazon’s £79-per-year Prime streaming service, which also includes free delivery of items bought on Amazon. Amazon has also said that the new travelling format means that its customers around the world will have the chance to be in the audience when tickets are released through prize draws this summer. Fans can follow The Grand Tour on Facebook and Twitter. How similar will Jeremy Clarkson’s new show be to Top Gear? Regular elements of Top Gear, such as The Stig and the Star in a Reasonably Priced Car, are the property of the BBC, so won’t be carried over. However, the format will still be familiar to Top Gear viewers, with a mix of studio-based chat and international adventures. Former Top Gear executive producer Andy Wilman, who has also moved to Amazon to work on the show, told Broadcast the three presenters would have “more time to yak” and their friendship would be the show’s central element. What cars will feature on Jeremy Clarkson’s new show? In the opening episode, the trio will compare three of the latest hybrid hypercars: the Ferrari LaFerrari, McLaren P1 and Porsche 918 Spyder.

JAGUAR C-TYPE FETCHES £5.7M AT AUCTION

A totally original Jaguar C-type raced at Le Mans in 1954 has been sold for £5,715,580 in Monaco An unrestored Jaguar C-type that raced at Le Mans has sold for £5,715,580 at auction in Monaco, during the Grand Prix Historique race meeting in the principality. It had been thought that the C-type, registered POV 114, was the works team car which substituted at the last moment as a Belgian Ecurie Francorchamps entry in the 1954 Le Mans 24 Hours, with the body of a C-type entered the previous year. However, specialist research by auctioneer Bonhams confirmed otherwise. In August 2015, an ex-Ecurie Ecosse Lightweight C-type, chassis XKC-052 and the second of only three works lightweights, driven by Peter Whitehead and Ian Stewart to fourth at the 1953 Le Mans 24 Hours, fetched £8.4 million at auction in California. James Knight, International Group Director, Bonhams Motoring, said: “The Jaguar was not at all a combination of the chassis from one car, the body from another. “On further inspection, we established that the it really is the 1953 Belgian-entered Le Mans car in toto, chassis number ‘XKC 047’ - still bearing its original, complete ‘K 1047’ body – but with its chassis number merely re-stamped ‘XKC 011’ by the factory before sale in January 1955.” 40

FAI NATIONAl P.R.O. OF THE YEAR RAS ON THE WAY: One of the biggest sporting events of the summer in the county takes place next week when the internationally acclaimed An Post Ras hits the county. Stage 3 of the Ras on Tuesday brings the riders from Charleville to Dingle with the riders coming into the county at Scartaglin around noon. Tralee big cycling community will be out in force as the race enters the town around 12.30 coming in by Castlemorris and Ballymullen Roundabouts and heading onto Blennerville and Dingle by way of the Connor Pass. The riders are expected to finish in Dingle around 1.45pm. Stage 2 on Wednesday sees the riders head from Dingle to Sneem, taking in Milltown, Killorglin, over Ballaghisheen and Coomakista before finishing in Sneem around 2.30pm. The Ras leaves Kerry on Thursday when the peloton heads from Sneem to Clonakilty. We wish the 7 Kerry riders taking part all the best. They are Eugene Moriarty who is in his 19th Ras, an amazing achievement at this level of the sport, Sean Lacey will be racing in his 14th Ras and then the 5 members of the Kerry team. Cathal Moynihan will lead the team in his 4th Ras while the rest of the Kerry team are all making their debuts – John Brosnan, Eoin O’Connell, Richard Maes and Barry Horgan. The team will be managed by Moda Kingdom Endurance supremo Pat Dunworth. AT THE TRACK: On Friday night at the Kingdom Greyhound Stadium it’s the semi-finals of the Boylesports Race of Champions plus a top class supporting card, including the semi-finals of the Brehon Hotel Club Championship and the Dublin Coach AO 525 yards. Also taking place is the Track Supporters Club N1/N2. On Saturday night there are the semi-finals of various stakes in the build-up to the Final of the Boylesports Race of Champions on Friday May 27th. Leave At Dawn has certainly put his name out there as he battered the track record by a single spot in a 550 yard trial last Saturday night. The Brendan Mathews owned dog hadn’t been seen in action since his troublesome run in the Scottish Derby final but he showed he was at his best when clocking 29.42 in his trial. This race has once again attracted a very high quality entry with the likes of Gain 600 winner Ballyhooly Henry who did a very good trial of 29.64. Delores Ruth’s Boylesports Duke, owned by sponsor John Boyle covered the 550 yards in 29.76. Shelbourne 575 record holder Milldean Puma, St Leger winner Skywalker Rory, Farloe Joey and Paradise Maverick are also expected to be in the hat for the draw this week. FENIT SWIMMERS SWIM INTO THE LIGHT: The Tralee Bay Swimming Club organised the Darkness into Light fundraising swim in aid of Pieta House saw 51 swimmers taking to the water. Swimmers were briefed beforehand and with the aid of light from the glow sticks the participants made their way to the water at 4.15am. There was a full back-up safety crew covering the event and all the pre-planning worked as the event went off without a hitch. All those who took part deserve great credit for hitting the water in the middle of the night and raising money for such a great cause.

Club Membership: Membership of the club is now due and monies can be dropped into Graham at Surf and Sail. Flag Day: The club is holding important flag days on May 28th and 29th and it is very important that everyone helps out. Everyone taking part also gets 1 point in the Swimmer of the Competition. Club Duty: All swimmers are required to give a hand out on one night with Club Duty. PARNELL’S NEWS: The Parnell’s u12 girls had a very enjoyable trip to the Caman to Thurles Camogie Blitz. The girls played 3 games against two Tipperary selections and one against a Cork side. It was great to see the number of parents that travelled and everyone was impressed with how much improvement the girls have shown since last year. The squad was without a number of players who have moved up to the u14’s grade and it was great to see the younger members stepping up. All the players who travelled were given information on the Camogie All Ireland in September. The club hopes a good number reply and all will be able to travel to Dublin as a group. Abbeydorney Trip: All those involved with the u6’s and 8’s trip to Abbeydorney can check out the clubs Facebook page for all the photos. The u10’s enjoyed a very busy week and having played in the South Kerry Blitz they welcomed St Vincent’s from Dublin to Tralee. The Dublin side brought 50 boys and they lined up against three Parnells teams and also teams from Kilmoyley and Abbeydorney. Jigsaw Kerry Team Talk: Tralee Parnells teenage players enjoyed an inspirational talk on Friday as part of their training sessions. Parnells are the first team in Kerry to offer the talk to the players. The clubs camogie jerseys are also now bearing the Jigsaw logo. The children enjoyed exploring issues around what helps our mental health and what hurts our mental state. Kerry Camogie: The club is very proud of Clogadh Begley who played for Kerry’s U16’s camogie team at the weekend. CAMOGIE NEWS: The Rose Hotel was the venue for the Kerry Camogie Clubs Golden Ticket Draw, with the monies going to the county teams training fund. County Board Chairperson Joanne Diggin was MC for the evening and there was plenty of silverware on show. Many of the sports sponsors were on hand and there was great excitement when the winners were announced. The winners were: U14 Training Tops: Adams of Tralee. U16 Half Zip Tops – The Abbey Grill. Senior Gear Bags: Lixnaw Fabrications. Senior Track Suits – Lee Strand and on the back of the jersey’s its Ahern’s Castleisland. The club also thanks Lee Strand who will provide their new protein milk to the teams over the next number of weeks. First time for Feile B: For the first time a Feile B competition was held in Kerry with Tralee Parnells facing Killarney. Round 1 was won by Killarney and Parnells won Round 2 so it’s all to play for on May 28th with the venue to be confirmed. Well done to Patrice Diggin and her UL Ashbourne team on their last minute win

Friday 20th May 2016

over UCC. Patricia also took the Player of the Tournament. She has also been selected for the Munster Panel for the upcoming Senior Inter-pros which start on Sunday May 22nd. Congratulations also to the County u16 manager Mike Enright who is a selector with the Munster panel. More History: The u16’s played Waterford in the Munster Championship C Final in Mallow with four clubs represented – Causeway, Cillard, Killarney and Tralee Parnells. Enright was joined on the management side by Sarah Leahy and Eimear Mahony and while Kerry went down it is great to have a team competing at this level. They will now have a summer run in the All Ireland series with the first game at home to Cavan on July 3rd. Causeway took on Granagh/Ballingarry in the u16 Limerick League Final and despite being hit with two goals the Causeway girls fought hard and at half time had scored 1-06 to 2-02. The Limerick sides ability to hit goals gave them the end but the Kerry girls fought to the end and while they went down 2-11 to 6-05 they can be very happy with their season. The Causeway u12 Girls enjoyed their Blitz at Semple Stadium . ST PAT’S STORIES: There was no winner of the Lotto from the numbers drawn 8, 12, 24 and 27 with the next jackpot at e6,100. The draw takes place this Sunday night in Keane’s Bar. Dingle Way Challenge: Sunday June 5th is the day of the Dingle Way Challenge with something for everyone from the single 11km stage to the 57km Ultra route. As usual means, including the BBQ will be in Blennerville upon completion. Early registration is encouraged as one section of the walk is guided, so numbers are restricted. Juvenile Academy: The U6’s made the short trip to Camp where they played Annascaul. All the young players had a great day. U8’s: The u8’s were also in Annascaul and put in another great performance. They train on Sunday and their next Blitz is on Wednesday, May 25th in Churchill from 7pm. The St Pat’s u10’s played a Fun Go Game last Sunday against the same opposition. They will have played in the Go Games in mid-week when they were in Churchill. The u12’s played Gneeveguilla in phase 2 of the County League and following an exciting game went down 5-7 to 5-9. They are away to Castleisland Desmonds this Sunday at 6pm. The u14’s travelled to Mountcoal and were unlucky to go down to a very strong Moyvane team. The boys have been working hard all year and put in some great performances and can now look forward to the Feile. Girls: There was a good turn out from the Girls with trainer Denis Healy happy with their progress. Seniors: With the County Championship on last weekend most of the player had some time off. Next Sunday week, May 29th, St Senans are the visitors to Blennerville. The B’s begin the County Junior Football League this weekend when they travel to Ballymacelligott . The other teams in the group are Ballydonoghue, Castleisland Desmonds, Churchill and Clounmacon. Mixed Games Fundraiser: This Friday there will be a mixed fun game involving coaches and parents v Mothers and Others at 7pm. This is a

SPONSORED BY RON CONSTRUCTION, BUILDING & CARPENTRY SERVICES fundraiser for Feile with the club working hard on preparations. Cul Camp 2016: The St Pat’s Cul Camp will take place between the 8th and 12th of August from 10am to 2.30pm each day. It will be for boys and girls between 6 and 13 and bookings are now open. AUSTIN STACKS JUVNILES: Well done to the u14’s who were big winners over Dr Crokes in the County League final. The Tralee boys won 6-8 to 1-6. Crokes started the better and got an early goal and their tactics of playing 3 sweepers were causing Stacks problems. However a quick change to running with the ball, rather than catch and kick, and things changed. Stacks now played with 7 forwards and Mervyn Shalemba and goals from Cian Purcell saw the Tralee side leading 2-4 to 1-2 at the break. An 8 minute period when Stacks hit 4 goals from Cian Purcell, Shane Bastible and James Fernane put the games beyond the Crokes. This was a great win and a big confidence boost with Feile only 6 weeks away. Feile: The Feile Parade in Tralee will take place on June 25th – the middle day of the 3 day Feile. Kerry Night at the Dogs: Stacks are selling tickets for the big night at the dogs and hope that all members support the Race of Champions with all monies going to the County Teams training funds. Sweet Music: Best wishes to all the members of the club that are taking part in the Fleadh Cheoil in Tralee this weekend. Summer Camps: The club will host the Cul Camp in Connolly Park from Monday July 4th to 8th and the clubs own Summer Camp from August 2nd to 6th. KERINS O’RAHILLYS NEWS:

Senior County Championship: The seniors were involved in a cracking Garvey’s Supervalu Co Championship Round 1 game with the Tralee side going down to South Kerry by the narrowest margin. The game ended 1-15 to 3-10 with the defending County Champions under severe pressure right up to the final whistle. Tommy Walsh hit Rahilly’s goal that saw them lead 1-11 to 1-06 at the break. South Kerry were level by the 40th minute and the lead changed on a number of occasions with South Kerry hitting their vital 3rd goal with 5 minutes remaining. Jack Savage halved the two point deficit late on but the equaliser wouldn’t come. Rahillys now take on Feale Rangers in ‘the last

chance saloon’ on Saturday next May 21st at 5.45pm in the Austin Stack period. The Junior Leagues start off next weekend with Strand Road home to Gneeveguilla on Friday 20th while Charlie Kerins have a Bye in the first round. Minor Football: The minors will face Austin Stacks in the Galtee Fuels Division 1 Coiste Tri Lifinal, This has been postponed until later in June. Girls: Management are now in place so contact the club to know your manager for training and game time. Lotto: There was no winner from the numbers drawn 2,25,26 and 27 with the jackpot now at e2,300. BOXING TO GLORY: Cillard captain Caoimhe Spillane from Abbeydorney is also a talented sports woman off the field. This week she won her All Ireland boxing quarter final. Caoimhe will now travel to Dublin this Friday to box in her semi-final at the National Boxing Stadium.

DOYLE BY A WHEEL: The opening round of the IBike Time Trial League took place in wonderful early summer conditions which saw a field of over 70 riders go against the clock. In the Men’s Over 40 section, section there was a clean sweep for Tralee Manor West iBike with George Doyle posting the fastest time of the night, a 38 minute flat time for the 20km course. He was just 2 seconds ahead of Tom Gentleman with Jerry McCarthy clocking 29.02. Conjor Kissane of Killarney CC had the best time of the Senior Men taking 4th overall in 29.33. The top 6 was completed by two more Manor West iBike riders with Tom Barrett, Men’s over 50’s in 5th and Robert Whyte in the over 40’s in 29.46. A sign of the talent on show was that the top 7 riders were all inside the 29.50 with Killarney CC’s Brendan Slattery taking that time. Defending champion Denis Dunworth is recovering from injury and Cathal Monihan is gearing up for the Ras with both expected to return later in the League. Suzanne O’Sullivan’s time of 33.29 saw her home as the fastest lady with numbers up in this section as well. Robbie Scott from the same Tralee club was the fastest u16 completing his 20k in 31.02. The u14’s had an epic battle with Patrick Galvin coming out on top in a category were less than 14 seconds separating the top 3. The 12’s was similar in closeness with Adam Lenihan clocking the fastest time. There was less than 25 seconds between the top 3.

The next round of the iBike Time Trial League is on Thursday May 26th. COUNTY LEAGUE ROUND 2: Round 2 of the Cycling Clubs County Road Race Leagues takes place this Thursday with Killarney the host venue. The usual Churchtown circuit near Beaufort will be in use with the Youth races starting from 6.30pm. His fellow Killarney CC teammate Leigh Hewerdine was 5th with Eoin O’Connell safely in the bunch. TOM TOPS IN FRANCE: Tom Moriarty from Castlegregory is racing in France at the moment with the Irish Academy had a great weekend taking a win and a 4th. Tom Barrett was 8th and 10th in his races. MIRACLE PRAYERS PRAY TO ST. EXPEDITE

KNOW YOUR RIGHTS: CHALLENGING A SCHOOL’S POLICIES Question My son shaved his head on Saturday and was sent home from secondary school on the following Monday. The school is using school policy to justify suspending him for one week until his hair starts to grow. What can I do? Answer All schools should have policies in place to deal with issues as they arise in the normal day-to-day running of a school (codes of behavior, school rules and other policies). These should be provided or made available to parents of children attending the school. If you are unhappy about a school’s policy or the implementation of a school’s policy you can make a complaint to the school. The school should have a formal complaints procedure that you can follow. The complaints procedure usually involves contacting the principal with your complaint. (The school’s procedures may ask you to speak to another member of staff before speaking with the principal.) If having spoken with the school principal, you are still not happy that your complaint has been resolved you may contact the chairperson of the school’s management authority. If the chairperson cannot resolve your complaint they should discuss the matter at a meeting of the management authority. The school’s Board of Management is usually the management authority. However, in the case of Education and Training Board schools you should contact the Education and Training Board responsible for the school. Shortly after reaching its decision, the management authority will let you know its decision on your complaint. This decision ends the school complaints process. The Department of Education and Skills provides information about making a complaint to a school on their website. If you have followed the school’s complaints procedures and you are not satisfied with the outcome you can escalate your complaint about the school to the Ombudsman for Children’s Office. The key criterion for any intervention by the Ombudsman for Children is that the action complained of has or may have adversely affected the child. The Ombudsman can examine any administrative actions of the school, staff or Board of Management including whether the school’s policies have been followed correctly or if those policies are fair.
