NEW “IT’S A KNOCKOUT” EVENT ONE OF ROSE FESTIVAL HIGHLIGHTS! CHARITIES, clubs, businesses and groups of friends are being offered a great chance to raise their profile in front of thousands of people in a fun new event on the busiest day of the Rose of Tralee International Festival. “It’s a Knockout” will take place in Tralee Town Park on Sunday 20th August when teams of six will tackle a course of inflatable and foam obstacles in the hope of winning a top prize of €1000. The Kerry Rose, Breda O’Mahony, was joined by a number of club, charity and business representatives to launch the event over the weekend. The coordinator of Rose of Tralee It’s a Knockout, Ken Murphy, said: “We have engaged with an events company, Fullswing Entertainment from Northern Ireland, to run “Rose of Tralee It’s a Knockout” which we hope will become an annual fixture at the festival. Teams will be drawn from a variety of backgrounds from sporting organisations, charities or simply groups of friends. There has already been considerable interest from prospective participants, while some local businesses who may not have the resources to 6

assemble a group of six have indicated their willingness to sponsor a team.” The teams will be encouraged to dress up for the occasion in either fancy dress costume or their club colours and they will be invited to participate in the Rose of Tralee afternoon parade through the streets of Tralee. The event, which will be the first of its kind in Tralee, promises to be a highly entertaining affair with lots of friendly rivalries between the teams. “This is an ideal opportunity to create awareness for your organisation at one of the main events at the festival with an estimated attendance of 10,000 at the afternoon parade each year,” said Ken Murphy. So, how do teams enter? It’s open to teams of six people, who must be over 16 years of age, and the entry fee is only €150 per team, payable before Friday 4th August. For more information and entry forms, contact Ken Murphy on events@roseoftralee.ie. This year’s Rose of Tralee International Festival will take place from Wednesday 16th to Tuesday 22nd August and festival-goers can look forward to a week of FREE entertainment in Friday 30th June 2017

TECHNOLOGY CORNER with Billy O Meara (HRI Services)

Billy simplifies and explains Todays Technology

I forgot the passcode for my iPhone! How can I remove it? Billy says: If you enter the wrong passcode in your iPhone more than six times it will be disabled. The only way to get it up and running is to erase the phone. So, I always recommend you back it to the iCloud and always have Find my iPhone enabled.

Method 1 From another device, go to icloud.com/find. If prompted, sign in with your Apple ID .Click All Devices at the top of your browser window. Select the device you want to erase. Click Erase [device] to erase your device and its passcode .Now you can either restore from a backup or set up as new Method 2 Connect your iOS device to your computer and open iTunes. While your device is connected, force restart it On an iPhone 6s and earlier, iPad, or iPod touch: Press and hold the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons at the same time. Don't release when you see the Apple logo. Keep holding both buttons until you see the recovery mode screen. On an iPhone 7 or iPhone 7 Plus: Press and hold the Sleep/Wake and Volume Down buttons at the same time. Don't release when you see the Apple logo. Keep holding both buttons until you see the recovery mode screen.

Whats the best 'Free to Air " (FTA) receiver to watch the TV Channels on

Billy says: There are two different types of free to air receivers on is a standard Free to Air which will give all the FTA Channels but it will not update automatically and there is no 7 Day guide. The other choice is called a freesat box which is more expensive but it has a 7day guide and updates automatically and if a new channel comes on out you will get it. You can also record with it using a usb stick or external hard drive. It has only a single tuner so you can only record one program at a time

Description Short-term overexposure to sunlight can cause sunburn. The skin can become red, hot and painful. After a few days the burnt skin may peel. Excessive exposure to the sunlight over time can increase the risk of developing skin cancer. Causes Sunburn is skin damage caused by ultraviolet (UV) rays. Everyone who is exposed to UV light is at risk of getting sunburn, and skin that burns rather than tans, pale skin or people that work outside have a higher risk of sunburn. Babies and young children are especially at risk of sunburn because of their delicate skin. Signs and Symptoms The skin can become red, warm, sore and tender. It may start to flake and peel after a few days, and will usually heal within a few days. Signs of severe sunburn can include the following: • Blistering or swelling of the skin • Chills • High temperature (fever) of 38°C or above • Dizziness • Headaches • Feeling sick (nauseous)

Treatment During warm, sunny weather adults and children of all ages should do the following: • Protect the skin with suitable clothing and stay in the shade where possible. • Avoid the sun between 11am and 3pm: this is when the sun’s UV rays are most harmful. • Wear a wide-brimmed hat that covers the face, neck and ears. • Wear sunglasses that protect against UV rays. • Apply a “high protection” sunscreen of at least SPF30 (SPF50 for children or people with pale skin) that protects against UV rays and reapply it regularly throughout the day. The higher the SPF factor the higher the protection against the sun. • Use water-resistant sunscreen if exercising or in contact with water. • Keep babies and young children out of direct sunlight. The following advice may help reduce the symptoms of sunburn until the skin heals. • Cool the skin by having a cold bath or shower, sponging it with cold water or holding a cold flannel to it. • Drink plenty of fluids to cool down and prevent dehydration. Avoid alcohol as it will cause further dehydration. • Try to avoid sunlight by covering up the affected areas of skin until the skin has fully healed. • Your Haven pharmacist can advise on appropriate aftersun products that can soothe and cool the skin whilst replacing the lost moisture. • If the sunburn is severe and the skin is blistered, speak to your Haven pharmacist as soon as possible and they can offer advice and solutions to help the skin heal. • There are a range of very effective over the counter remedies available from your Haven pharmacy to help prevent and treat sunburn. Please speak to one of our trained advisors or ask your Haven Pharmacist if you would like advice on which treatment is best suited to your needs. KNOW YOUR RIGHTS: RETIREMENT AGE Question A Function was held in Tralee for staff with 25 years service at IT Tralee’ Back row left to right are as follows:Pat Carney, Joseph Walsh, John Fox, Fergus McLysaght (25 years service), Brigid Crowley, Oliver Murphy, Donal Hunt, Mary Rose Stafford, Jim Stone and Seamus O’SheaFront row seated left to right as follows:Elizabeth Brunton (25 years service), Michael Hall (25 years service), Catherine Woods (25 years service), John Daly (25 years service) and Marty Boylan (25 years service), -Photo by Domnick Walsh

My employer says that I have to retire when I reach the age of 65. Can an employer make you retire at a certain age? Answer

There is no single fixed retirement age for employees. If you are employed, your retirement age should be set out in your contract of employment. The usual retirement age in contracts of employment is 65. Many contracts have provisions for early retirement from age 60 (or in some cases from age 55) and most have provision for early retirement on health grounds. Some occupations – for example, firefighters, An Garda Síochána and the Defence Forces – have provisions for earlier retirement. While employment equality legislation prohibits discrimination on the grounds of age, employers are still allowed to set retirement ages in employment contracts. Since 1 January 2016, under the Equality (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 2015 an employer may set a compulsory retirement age if the employer can objectively justify the retirement age of an employee. This could be for health and safety reasons, for example, the physical demands and requirements of the job.

John McNamara, Tralee (originally Ballyduhig, Listowel) with his grandson Marc Eoin Villepreux, Dublin checking the form at Listowel Races in June

If an employee has reached the employer’s mandatory age of retirement, this legislation provides that they may still be legitimately offered fixed-term contracts, provided that it is objectively justified. The provisions of the Protection of Employees (Fixed-Term Work) Act 2003 would still apply. The Workplace Relations Commission (WRC) provides information on your rights and entitlements under employment legislation. For further information about your contract of employment and retirement age you can contact the WRC’s Information and Customer Service at Lo-call 1890 80 80 90 or through the website, workplacerelations.ie

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... CHAMBER ALLIANCE LAUNCHES ‘NEED A TAXI ‘ TO PROMOTE NEW TAXI RANK!

TRALEE Chamber Alliance has launched an exciting new “Need a TAXI?” initiative as part of #loveTralee to give visitors and locals a better experience in Tralee, while supporting the local TAXI operators. If anyone needs a taxi they should simply call into a participating shop, café, pub or business that displays the “Need a TAXI?” sticker on the window or door and a member of staff will either pass on the local taxi details or they will call a taxi for the customer. The main taxi rank was relocated to the Tesco car park, near Boots in the town centre after the old rank in The Mall, which had been in use for over a decade, closed last month.

Taxi drivers in Tralee say their incomes have been hit as the public are not using the new rank. The President of Tralee Chamber Alliance, John Drummey, said: “Our local taxi drivers operate an excellent service and look after many visitors to our town and locals too, of course. They need our support. The town centre businesses want to help the taxis give all our customers an even better service. We recognise that taxi operators are no different to other business providers in Tralee upon whom we have already impressed the importance of unity and teamwork. We are all facing challenges during the current town centre transformation, but everyone, including taxi operators, need put on their ‘shop faces’ and maintain a positive outlook for the good of the town.”

Tralee Chamber Alliance has asked Kerry County Council to erect signage directing pedestrians to the new main taxi rank at Tesco and a map to highlight the location of all the taxi ranks in town. The Tralee Town Centre Retail representative on Tralee Chamber Alliance, Heather O’Sullivan, said: “Tralee Chamber Alliance has enjoyed an excellent level of communication with Kerry County Council during the Town Centre Active Travel Development works. We feel that our weekly meetings have

been very beneficial for all involved and in particular the town centre. Issues, such as those facing the taxi operators, are dealt with swiftly and discretely for the good of the town.” The “Need a Taxi?” scheme, which has been welcomed by and devised in consultation with Tralee Taxi Association, will be in operation from the first week in July and members of the public are being encouraged to look out for the stickers in shops.

A NEW ERA FOR SHANNON AIRPORT AND WILD ATLANTIC WAY AS NORWEGIAN LOW-COST TRANSATLANTIC SERVICES TO START ON SUNDAY The strength of the tourism across the regions will be emphasised on Sunday next when Shannon Airport operates its largest number of transatlantic destinations in 17 years with the commencement of two Norwegian Air International services. Two weekly flights to Stewart International Airport, Orange County – just 90 minutes from New York – and two weekly flights to Providence Green Airport, Rhode Island will be added to the already strong Shannon US schedule. The new services create an unprecedented line-up to the USA from Shannon Airport, with five airlines serving seven destinations. Looking ahead to the commencement of the new services on Sunday 2nd July, Shannon Group CEO Matthew Thomas said: “This is a remarkable day in many respects. It heralds another 20

TRALEE ADVERTISER

new carrier at Shannon and what’s most notable here is that Norwegian Air International, a new transatlantic operator, not only chose Shannon but is introducing the second largest number of flights at any airport here. That clearly demonstrates the strength of the market for Shannon transatlantic services. “Beyond that, the range of Shannon’s US flights is striking. We will now have seven destinations on our programme to the US. There is no other European airport of our size with anything comparable to our level of US connectivity. These services, combined with our passenger friendly US pre-clearance facilities, mean that our customers arrive stateside as domestic passenger.” Said Shannon Airport Managing Director Andrew Murphy, “This speaks volumes Friday 30th June 2017

again about the US market for the west and south of Ireland. With the success of the Wild Atlantic Way, in particular, it reaffirms Shannon’s position as the premier access for what is fast becoming a global tourism phenomenon. That’s a proud piece for us as we know the huge effort that has gone into making the tourism offering across the Wild Atlantic Way, from Cork right up to Donegal, a world-class product. “We’ve worked hard to support

that and Sunday next is another breakthrough in that regard for Shannon and the region. It’s up to us all, the airline, ourselves, the tourism agencies and the public now to make this and our other transatlantic services a success for the betterment of the region.” Norwegian is Europe’s third largest low-cost carrier, carrying 30 million yearly passengers to more than 140 global destinations.

HELLO MY BEAUTIFUL FRIENDS, HOPE YOU'RE ALL HAVING A FAB WEEK! This week I'm doing a 'Blogging Tips 101' for any of you thinking about starting your own blog or these points can be applied to starting your own YouTube channel too! 1. BLOG HONESTLY When you blog, always ensure that the subject/ topic of the blogpost is in your own opinion & voice. It's easy to spot when someone is not giving their honest thoughts and opinions on something. Your blog will be a lot more popular if you are honest in things that you blog about. Remember, your thoughts and opinions are your own and they cannot be mimicked, this will make your blog authentic and easier for people to connect with! 2. ONLY BLOG WHEN YOU'RE INSPIRED. If a blogpost is forced it just won't end well. It won't be your best quality or enjoyable. There are times that I sit down with the intentions of blogging but for some reason I simply

can't get inspired. When that happens I just don't blog. There is absolutely no point in writing a half-arsed blog post for the sake of putting something up! Wait until you get inspiration or an idea and let your thoughts flow. 3. POST REGULARLY I know I said above only to blog when you're inspired and I stick to that. But if you only post every now and again and leave huge spaces between your post you won't gain a strong readership. If people don't think you're consistent, they are less likely to revisit your blog often. When you're inspired to blog, write a few blog posts that you can post a day where you're not up to blogging. We all have those days!

4. USE WORDPRESS/ BLOGSPOT WHEN GETTING STARTED I was lucky that I did a computer course and knew how to go about starting my blog when I wanted to, it really made things easier. If you're a newbie I recommend either of those sites to get started. They are user friendly and I have used both. I currently use Blogspot and I design my own blog. It takes a bit o getting used to but that's all the fun of it. 5. MAKE YOUR BLOG YOUR OWN, BE YOURSELF! I cannot stress enough how important this is. You want your blog to be original and not a copy of any other blog. If you copy

22

TRALEE ADVERTISER

Friday 30th June 2017

posts from another blog it's not your own and it's not any bit original. There are thousands of blogs out there so you have to make your blog your own and original. That will make others want to follow and keep up with your blog. Otherwise you'll be just another blogger and won't stand out from the crowd. Remember, blog because you want to, blog because you're inspired, don't blog for fame or recognition, your posts won't come across genuine and you won't succeed in a strong readership!

FITNESS!

HELLO MY STRONG FRIENDS! I HOPE YOU’RE ALL HAVING AN AMAZING WEEK! As you may or may not know, I am heading to Thailand in 3 weeks and I could not be more excited. I will be sure to add in some pictures when I am home. This week I don’t want to talk about ‘Getting in shape for holidays’ or any certain event for that matter. You should never put pressure on yourself so that you “lose 10 pounds in a month” or anything like that. It doesn’t work. It only can stress you out and when you don’t see the quick results you give up. My journey has not been fast or linear. I used to always be like “ok

so I have 3 months to lose 3 stone” and I’d get so bogged down on the time passing and not seeing the results. I’d say to myself “if only I had started last week/month/year” and so on and so fourth. One extremely important thing I have learned is… TIME IS GOING TO PASS ANYWAY, THERE IS NO RUSH. I discovered this week that this time last year I was 2.5 stone (35 pounds) heavier – now I don’t focus on numbers but just so you can put things into perspective. That would mean I lost half a pound each week

My Journey so far ....

1

2

This one was me This was taken also around probably at my heaviest. that time, I have so many I was dress shopping for pictures like this standing infront my cousin’s 21st, October of the mirror in my gym gear. 2015. Let’s just say I didn’t Waiting for a change. go for that dress!

and 2 pounds a month. If old me saw those results she would just give up because the ‘progress’ wasn’t ‘quick enough’. But it’s not all about the scales, it’s about how I feel, how much stronger I am in the gym, how I implement balance. I’m not on a strict diet and if something comes up where I can’t exactly get to the gym, it’s ok. Since last June I have gone on multiple nights out, gone on a girls holiday where I ate and drank what I wanted, had dominos and Chinese, enjoyed my time home at Christmas and so much more. I have also known when

3

Christmas 2015 – Before I decided to really make a change.

4

April 2016 – My 22nd birthday. I was so happy! I had made so much progress. I wasn’t thinking about how far I had to go, just about how far I had come.

to pull in the reigns, get to the gym and ensure that I’m eating enough of the right foods! My point is, time is going to pass anyway, so just focus on what you do today that can make it easier to get to your goals. If you go off track a little, SO WHAT. All that matters is that you get back on track. So just so you know what I’m talking about when I mean slow but steady progress… here are some pictures…

5

Christmas 2016 – I felt absolutely amazing! Big change in a year. I’m on the far right.

7

June 2017 – Another picture in gym gear, just a slightly different gal!

I am very proud of how far I have come. It’s all about mindset and remembering that the best project you can work on, is YOU! I still have more goals and things I want to achieve, but they’re more like ‘squat 100kg’ and ‘feel healthy’ than ‘get to size 8’or ‘lose another 2 stone’.

6

May 2017 – Same dress I wore for my 22nd birthday, just a little loose!

If you live like the latter, you’ll never be happy and nothing will ever be enough. Am I freaking out about the fact I’m going to Thailand for 3 weeks and I won’t be able to eat on track or get to the gym? NO! I can’t wait to just enjoy my holidays, I’ll worry about the gym when I come back. Although I’m dying to do some Muay Thai while I’m there. It’s all about balance!

Any gym supplements that I use I get from MyProtein. I love their whey protein, favourite flavours are, Salted Caramel, Chocolate Brownie and Vanilla! I have a discount code that gets you 25% OFF your first order over €30 REBECCA-R5OS. 24

METHOD Bring beer to a boil in a large heavy pot. Add clams. Cover pot, reduce heat to medium, and steam clams until they open, 6–8 minutes. Using a slotted spoon, transfer clams to a large bowl or platter (discard any that do not open). Serve with lemon halves

CLAMS WITH NEW POTATOES AND SPRING ONIONS

New potatoes are freshly dug and have tender skins; wash them gently so that they don’t tear. If they’re hard to find, any small potato or fingerling variety will work.

INGREDIENTS • • • • • • • •

3 tablespoons olive oil 4 ounces smoked Spanish chorizo, cut into 1/4” pieces 1 1/2 pounds small new potatoes, sliced 1/4” thick 1 bunch spring onions or scallions, whites halved and sliced; greens sliced on a diagonal, divided 4 garlic cloves, thinly sliced 1 cup dry white wine (such as Sauvignon Blanc or Pinot Gris) 5 pounds clams, scrubbed Toasted bread (for serving)

METHOD Heat oil in a large heavy pot over medium heat. Add chorizo and cook, stirring often, until some fat has rendered and chorizo begins to crisp, about 4 minutes. Add potatoes, spring onion whites, and garlic. Cook, tossing often, until potatoes are crisp-tender, 10-12 minutes. Add wine and cook until reduced by half, about 5 minutes. Add 2 1/2 cups water and continue to cook until potatoes are just tender, 5-8 minutes longer.Add clams and half of onion greens, cover pot, and cook, stirring occasionally, until clams have opened, 8-10 minutes (discard any clams that do not open).Divide clam mixture among bowls. WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... 3RD LEVEL APPLICANTS HAVE UNTIL 5.15PM ON SATURDAY TO SUBMIT A CAO “CHANGE OF MIND” The state exams are done and dusted so the thoughts of exhausted candidates are no doubt turning to holidays, summer jobs and travel. But there is still a very important task to be undertaken. The 80,000 plus applicants to the Central Applications Office (CAO) must now turn their attention to the CAO “Change of Mind” facility which affords each applicant an opportunity, if s/he wishes, to register a change of course choices online by 5.15pm on Saturday, 1st July. Many applicants are happy with their original course choices submitted to CAO by 1st February but others might have done further course research or simply changed their minds about the courses they would like to study. Whatever your reason for submitting a change of mind form, now is the time to do so. After the 1st July you can make no further changes to your CAO application form.

If you decide to submit a change of mind form, work on your choices before going online. Don’t tinker with your original list while online as it’s very easy to make a mistake. Start from scratch and prepare a new list of courses. Check the minimum course requirements and the special requirements for each course you are including on the change of mind form. Don’t list any course which has been cancelled, but you may include any new courses which were announced after the 2017 CAO Handbook was published. All of this information is easily accessible on the CAO website, www.cao.ie. When you have finalised your choices, open up your CAO account via the “My Application” facility. Click on “Add Level 8 Course Choices” and/or “Add Level 7/6 Course Choices.” Then use the “New Courses” list to enter your new

course choices. Remember that every choice is important and it’s advisable to fill up all ten choices in each category. The two course categories – Level 8 (Honours Bachelor Degrees) and Level 7/6 (Ordinary Bachelor Degrees/Higher Certificates) are totally separate from each other for the purpose of submitting a change of mind form. You may change one category and leave the second category unchanged or you may change both. On the other hand, you may decide to stick with the choices you submitted by 1st February last. Check that your courses have been updated by using the “My Application” facility by 5.15pm

on 1st July. You may change your course choices free of charge as often as you wish up to the closing date. The final change of mind form that you submit is the one that will count for your CAO offers in August, so be very careful to check online before 1st July to make sure that all is in order.

TORQUING CARS! EUROPCAR ACCUSED OF OVERCHARGING CUSTOMERS FOR REPAIRS

One of Europe’s biggest hire car firms, Europcar, is accused of fraudulently overcharging customers for repairs as Trading Standards raided its UK head office yesterday. Evidence obtained by the Daily Telegraph suggests the firm’s UK arm may have profited to the tune of millions of pounds by inflating the cost to consumers of windscreens and other repairs by up to 300 per cent. Trading Standards is investigating the firm over billing concerns including overcharging for repairs, it can also be revealed. This week legal experts described Europcar’s actions as “serious” and warned its repairs policy could be in breach of the Fraud Act 2006, as well as the Consumer Rights Act 2015.

CAR ADVICE WITH HONEST JOHN – YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED If your car has developed a fault, turn to Honest John by emailing honestadvice@telegraph.co.uk

PM’S QUESTION TIME

I have a 2012/62 VW Golf Plus 1.6 TDI with 16,000 miles. I wish to keep it, but my wife finds difficulty in accessing the front passenger seat. I have asked the supplying dealer whether it is possible to relocate the seat a couple of inches farther back, but was told ‘no’. What do you think? PM H.J Says Anything like this can be done, if not by the dealer then perhaps by a specialist who usually adapts vehicles for the disabled. Try www.jeffgosling.co.uk.

DEFINING MOMENT

Is there a definition of SUV? For example, is the Peugeot 3008 only an SUV because they have put it in the name? It looks more like an MPV to me. PO H.J. says . A Sports Utility Vehicle is primarily designed to be four-wheel drive but might also be available without. A 3008 is a crossover between a car, an MPV and an SUV, but it is available with Grip Control that is as effective in snow and off road as the average 4WD system, so qualifies it as an SUV.

HAPPY TORQUE

Can you recommend a replacement for my well-loved manual Mazda5, which is now 11 years old. I would like the new car to be no bigger in width or height, and would need automatic transmission, with the higher seat position, five doors and a flat boot. EM HJ says The Mazda5 was a good car and the MkII is even better, though not available as an auto. The best MPV auto the same size is a Citroën C4 Picasso 1.2 Puretech 130 with EAT6 torque converter auto. You can also get the same excellent engine and transmission in the Peugeot 3008.

VENI, VIDI, SEDICI

I have a 2008 Fiat Sedici with 36,000 miles on the clock. It has been valued at £1,600. I have been advised that the clutch is slipping and will need replacing by the end of the year. The cost will be £600. Apart from that apparent problem, the car suits me perfectly. Should I part-exchange it for a Fiat 500X, or pay for the new clutch? MT H.J. says Get a new clutch. This is quite a decent car.

TORQUING CARS! MOTORING NEWS •

According to reports, Jaguar Land Rover is planning to take on an additional 5,000 electronic and software engineers as part of its build up towards developing and producing more autonomous vehicles. A second Hyundai N performance model is being forecast for next year, following in the footsteps of the i30N hot hatch. According to reports, there is likelihood in the future of hybrid and electric powertrains. Expect Peugeot’s new 508 next year to look radically different. Instead of the current 4dr profile, there will be a fastback, more sporty look. It will have the

JAGUAR XF SPORTBRAKE TARGETS 5-SERIES’ ARRIVAL

Jaguar’s new XF Sportbrake (estate), recently unveiled, will get here towards the end of the year. The BMW 5-Series Touring rival is based on the XF saloon but has been designed to look sportier. Much of the interest here will be on the 161bhp 2-litre diesel (118g/km). It drives the rear wheels and comes just as a manual. There’s also a 2-litre 178bhp version (rear/all-wheel drive), a 237bhp model (ditto) and a 3-litre V6 (all-wheel drive, 8spd auto standard). There’s a 247bhp 2-litre petrol too. Built on Jaguar’s aluminium architecture, the chassis set up is a bit different to the saloon. Air springs at the back feature to keep the car level when carrying loads. It has 565 litres of luggage space with the rear seats up; 1,700 litres when they’re flat. It is 6mm shorter than the current model but has a 51mm longer wheelbase. At 1,660kg, they claim its weight distribution is nearly 50/50. Among the techno menu are adaptive cruise control, blindspot monitoring and reverse traffic detection technology. Also there are the marque’s InControl infotainment system, 10in touchscreen and new air purification technology that prevents exterior gases from getting in. No idea of price yet. Indo Motoring

ASTON MARTIN REVEALS THE RAPIDE, ITS FIRST ELECTRIC CAR

Aston Martin has confirmed that the RapidE, an all-electric version of the fourdoor Rapide, will go into production in 2019. Based on the upcoming Rapide AMR concept, it will be a four-door performance car with an electric motor replacing the V12 engine. This will be Aston Martin’s first ever electric car, offering what CEO Dr Andy Palmer describes as “a sustainable future”.The internal combustion engine has been at the heart of Aston Martin for more than a century, and will continue to be for years to come,” said Andy. [The] RapidE will showcase Aston Martin’s vision, desire and capability to successfully embrace radical change, delivering a new breed of car that stays true to our ethos and delights our customers.”This isn’t the first time Aston Martin has tried to reduce the collective CO2 emissions of its stable. Back in 2015 when the concept was unveiled, the Cygnet was a relatively recent memory. “On my watch we are never going to put a diesel engine in an Aston, and I don’t think the Cygnet was the right thing to do,” said Andy in 2015. “I think a car that sits squarely above the Tesla [Model S electric car] would be much more interesting. Most people who buy Teslas are buying fully loaded ones, which implies there’s room for that.” Andy Palmer occupied senior roles at Nissan while the Japanese manufacturer developed and launched the Leaf, which is one of our favourite EVs and arguably one of the most successful Paul McNamara, Technical Director at Williams Advanced Engineering said today: “Williams Advanced Engineering has always endeavoured to work collaboratively with its customers to meet their sustainability challenges and find energy efficient solutions. “For today’s car manufacturers, this is particularly important as legislation demands more energy efficient vehicles. 40

IT’S ONLY A JOKE A MAN WAS CROSSING THE JUNGLE WHEN HE GOT AMBUSHED BY A GROUP OF NATIVES.

They had fearsome tattoos and bloodthirsty expressions in their faces and in front of them their terrible chieftain, a man the size of a mountain. “Well, now I’m goosed ,” says the man quietly, when suddenly gusts of wind start blowing in the leaves and a mysterious voice whispers in his ear: “You are not. Take the rock lying next to your foot and bash the chieftain’s skull in.” The man, thankful that the spirits of the jungle stand on his side, listens to the instructions, grabs the rock and throws it at the chieftain, killing him instantly. “Now you’re goosed ,” says the mysterious voice.

AS A GUITARIST, I PLAY MANY GIGS. BUT FOR THE FIRST TIME IN MY CAREER, I WAS ASKED BY A FUNERAL DIRECTOR TO PLAY AT A GRAVESIDE SERVICE FOR A HOMELESS MAN.

He had no family or friends, so the service was to be at a pauper’s cemetery in the back country. As I was not familiar with the backwoods, I got lost. I finally arrived an hour late and saw the funeral guy had evidently gone, the hearse nowhere in sight. There were only the diggers and crew left, and they were eating lunch. I felt badly and apologized to the men for being late. I went to the side of the grave and looked down and the vault lid was already in place. I didn’t know what else to do, so I started to play. The workers put down their lunches and began to gather around. I played out my heart and soul for this man with no family and friends. I played like I’ve never played before for this homeless man. And as I played ‘Amazing Grace,’ the workers began to weep. They wept, I wept; we all wept together. When I finished I packed up my guitar and started for my car. Though my head hung low, my heart was full. As I opened the door to my car, I heard one of the 42

workers say, “I never seen nothin’ like that before and I’ve been putting in septic tanks for twenty years.” Apparently, I’m still lost…

A WOMAN HAS TO GO TO A CONFERENCE IN ITALY, SO HER HUSBAND DRIVES HER.

Thanks honey” she says, “what would you like me to bring you back?” “Oh, um, an Italian girl!” The husband jokingly says. “I’ll see what I can do” the woman says as she walks into the airport waving goodbye. 3 days later the woman returns and her husband greets her at the airport. “How was your trip? Did you remember to bring my gift?” “What gift?” “The Italian girl!” “Oh, we’ll have to wait 9 months to see if it’s a boy or girl”

A COUPLE WAS CELEBRATING THEIR GOLDEN WEDDING ANNIVERSARY.

Their domestic tranquility had long been the talk of the town. A local newspaper reporter was inquiring as to the secret of their long and happy marriage. “Well, it dates back to our honeymoon,” explained the man. We visited the Grand Canyon and took a trip down to the bottom of the canyon on a pack mule. We hadn’t gone too far when my wife’s mule stumbled. My wife quietly said, “that’s once.” We proceeded a little further and the mule stumbled again. Once more my wife quietly said, “That’s twice.” We hadn’t gone a half-mile when the mule stumbled the third time. My wife quietly removed a revolver from her purse and shot the mule dead. I started an angry protest over her treatment of the mule, when she looked at me, and quietly said, “That’s once.”

TALKING SPORT WITH THE TRALEE ADVERTISER

with “The Voice” Pat Harnett

FAI NATIONAl P.R.O. OF THE YEAR LITHUANIA CALLING FOR INTERNATIONAL CHILDREN’S GAMES TEAM: Eighteen young Kerry athletes are all set for the trip of a lifetime to this year’s International Children’s Games and Cultural Festival in Kaunas, Lithuania from July 04-09. Since the athletes were selected in February much planning, preparation and fundraising efforts have been completed and Tralee will now be represented for the 13th successive year at the Games. The Tralee team will consist of girls’ 3 v 3 basketball, boys’ 6 a side soccer, judo and track and field. The Kaunas Games are eagerly anticipated by the young athletes as they prepare to pit their skill and wit against their peers from 90 cities, representing 40 countries, at the largest annual multi-sport youth event in the world. The children are very excited at the prospect of competing against international opposition for the first time in their lives and there is no doubt that impending challenge will bring out the very best in our young representatives. The girls’ basketball team will face opposition from Tripoli, Libya; Raanana of Israel and the home favourites Kaunas of Lithuania in what is seen as a very strong group. The judo squad will compete against judokas from the Ukraine, Israel and Holland-strongholds of the sport, while on the track Tralee could face athletes from Europe, Asia or North America in the 400m and 1500m events. The draw for the soccer team sees them do battle with Kecskemet of Hungary, Garliava of Lithuania and Pesnica of Slovenia in their group games. A change in procedure this year means that only the top team progresses from the group, straight to semi- finals, which will make group qualification all the more difficult. “The international aspect of the event is most exciting for everyone involved” says Mike Culloty, Tralee ICG Secretary. “It presents our young athletes with a fresh and exciting challenge in their sporting life and the experience can only benefit them in the long term. We are very proud that we are again able to participate and represent Tralee Municipal District and Kerry County Council at the event this year and we offer our sincere gratitude to all who have helped and supported our fundraising activities in recent months, without which this would not be possible. The levels of support received has been excellent

and we wish to acknowledge the contributions made by parents and families, local businesses, and the general public at large to our bag packing days, bake sales and the sale of raffle tickets” The young athletes who will represent Tralee in Kaunas are as follows: Soccer: Sean Mc Grath (Park FC), Philip Evans, Leo Gaxha, Junior Ankomah, Sean Kennedy, Soni Rramani, (Tralee Dynamos), Padraig Hilliard, (Castleisland FC), Kevin Goulding (Ratoo Rovers) Basketball: Rachel Kilgallen, Aoife Dillane, Mary O Connell, Rebecca Conway (Tralee Imperials) Judo: Chris Palmer, Sean Murphy, Marco Antonio Kauric (Kerry School of Judo) Athletics: Basit Oyejambi, (Tralee Harriers), Sean Pollmen-Daamen, Tim Pollmen-Daamen (An Riocht) The Head of Delegation for Tralee will be John Byrne, while Paul Dolan, Liam Culloty, Danny Roche and Paula Henry will be in charge of the various teams in Kaunas. The teams will be supported by 24 travelling parents and family members who have also decided to travel to the event and provide vocal and other support to the teams. It will provide for a fantastic atmosphere at all the Tralee sport events and with a combined total of 50 parents, athletes and coaches at the Games, Tralee will undoubtedly fly the Irish flag with pride, good humour and athletic prowess. The full Tralee contingent will all stay together at the same hotel for the first few days, before the teams and coaches transfer to the University of Kaunas for the duration of the Games from July 4th. The Tralee teams return on Sunday, July 9th. Here’s hoping for an enjoyable and successful time in Kaunas for everyone involved. There were a number of rule changes passed including the number of members of the MC, how many clubs are entitled to have on the Management Committee and the duration that officers are able to serve. The present playing season was also endorsed in the context of the discussions by the FAI regarding calendar year football. KERRY AND CORK CLASH IN TRALEE ON SUNDAY: No the Munster football final has not been moved again. It is still on in Killarney. But Kerry and Cork City do clash in Tralee – in the Eircom u17 League of Ireland at 2pm. One does have to question the timing of this fixture. It must be stated that this fixture is made by the FAI and not the KDL or anyone in the County. But why would Cork City even want to travel on the busiest day on the road across the border? From a Kerry point of view this is the first of two occasions the side meet in three days as Cork City come back down to Tralee for the second round of the Cup in mid-week. Kerry had been on a great run before the break but went down in their first game back losing 3-2 away to Bray Wanderers so they will be looking to get back to winning ways. WIN AND RUNNER UP SPOTS FOR BOXERS: Trojan boxing club’s Sean Walsh is this week celebrating becoming a double All Ireland Champion. Having won his first title at 68kg back in April he captured the National Cadet title this week after moving up to 72kg. Cashen Vale’s Aaron McElligott had to settle for silver in his National Cadet Championship final going down to Mark Duffy from Charlestown Boxing club in Mayo. SUCCESS WITH BAT AND BALL FOR KERRY CRICKETERS: It was good week for the game of cricket in Ireland as our national team has achieved Test status allowing them to play the top teams in the world. Locally too there was plenty of success with the Kerry qualifying for the Munster

semi-finals after defeating Cork Harlequins. There were a number of good Kerry performances in this win including John Roux and Junaid but Man of the Match when to Adam Hickey, one of the sports brightest prospects in the county. In the Munster Junior T20 Bash Kerry also advanced along with Limerick from a 3 team group after both defeated Galway. The Senior squad also progressed to their Finals Day next week in the Mardyke. There was further success when North Kerry secured their first League win of the season in Munster’s Division 2. They dismissed Waterford for 93 and got home with four wickets to spare after a shaky start. DOYLE JUST PIPPED IN LATEST ROAD RACE ROUND: Tralee Manor West iBike’s George Doyle and Killarney’s Conor Kissane are dominating the Cycling Clubs of Kerry Road Race League with the Killarney rider just getting the better of his Tralee opponent in recent rounds. After a great battle in Cordal, in the round organised by Currow CC, the two were part of a four man breakaway and it was Kissane who timed his sprint to perfection with 500 metres to go to take the win ahead of Doyle. His club mates Jake Deering and Ross Culloty came home 5th and 6th on the night. In the underage races Tralee Manor West iBike’s Eoin Moloney was second behind Castlegregory’s Tom Moriarty. Kingdom CC’s Ciaran Commane took 6th and the final points scoring place in the u14 race. TRALEE WELL REPRESENTED AT COMMUNITY GAMES FINALS: Over 2000 athletes from all over Kerry took to the An Riocht track to fight for places in the National Finals of the Community Games which will take place in the National Sports Campus in Abbotstown on August 19th and 20th. The County finals, sponsored by Denny for the 16th year, were a huge success. From a Tralee point of view Dara Harty from Spa/Fenit/ Barrow was second in the Boys u8’s 80 meters, Ciaran O’Connell from Ballymac was 3rd in the 100m u10’s and Lucy O’Connor of Rock Street/Caherslee was 4th in the u12 Girls 100m. The Boys u16 100 metres was a cracking race with Mervyn Shalemba (St Brendan’s / Oakpark) winning from Cillian Griffin (Boherbee/Cloghers/ Manor) with Fergal O’Brien of Blennerville/Ballyard third. In the Boys 1500 metres u16 there was another Tralee 1-2. Oisin Spillane from Blennerville/Ballyard took the win from Sean Pollman-Daaman of Boherbee/Cloghers/Manor) while in the Girls Sarah Barrett of Blenerville/ Ballyard was 2nd. Kai Seino (Rock Street/Caherslee) took second in the Boys u10 200 metres while Oran Murphy (Spa/ Fenit/ Barrow) was second in the u12’s race over the same distance with his club mate Jessica McGibney taking the same place in the Girls race. Aaron Malik of Ardfert/ Kilmoyley won the u16 200m with St Brendan’s Oakpark athletes Sean Quilter and Basit Abolore taking 2nd and 3rd. Spa/ Fenit Barrows Kate Hennessy and Blaithin McKenna tied for third in the girl’s race. Spa/Fenit/ Barrows Eddie

SWIMMERS BACK IN THE WATER: Having had to postpone Round 2 of the Tralee Bay Swimming Club’s World Series swimmers were anxious to get back into the water as soon as possible and were delighted when the race went ahead in midweek. Cillian Tierney set the fastest time of the night with a 12.52 Gerard Pierce was the 1st in from the A group with David Smith 2nd. Dominic Rollo-Walker was the quickest from the B group followed by Tom Brosnan. Noel Ryan won the Group 3 race with Bridget Moore second. Round 3 was set to take place on Thursday night. This was the Wheel Rock swim sponsored by Brendan Dillane Weathermaster. SWEEPS TIME: Racing as normal this weekend with Friday night and Saturday night - first race off at 7.40pm plus the usual Saturday morning 8 race SIS program. Semi-finals of a number of sweeps taking place this week in advance of the annual Friends of University Hospital Kerry Fundraising Night at the Dogs which takes place on Friday 7th July where KDL will also be holding their League Awards night. Also Heather Hartley from the stadium has made the final 3 for the “In House Events Person of the year” at the Events Industry Awards and it’s now down to a public online vote to decide the winner. I would really appreciate if you could take two minutes to vote and maybe spread the word as we are up against some big competition and voting closes at 5pm tomorrow. You can vote online at https://www.surveymonkey. com/r/288HDDRhttps://www. surveymonkey.com/r/288HDDR JUNIORS SET TONE FOR BIG WEEKEND: The Kerry Juniors showed great fighting spirit to come back from 9 points down to defeat Cork and retain their Munster Junior football crown at Pairc Ui Rinn. The win gives Kerry 4 wins in a row and keeps them on track for a third All Ireland on the trot. Cork were ahead 1-11 to 0-09 at the

break and another goal then saw them extend their lead. Kerry began the fight back that by the end of the game saw the scores tied at 2-17 each. After extra time it was the Green and Gold that were celebrating 4-24 to 3-20. This sets the scene perfectly for the Senior decider in Killarney on Sunday. Throw in is at 2pm with the Kerry management reporting a clean bill of health in mid-week. Fitzmaurice will have a number of selection headaches ahead of the big game that Kerry are expected to win. And that of course is what makes Cork dangerous! Fitzmaurice also made the point that having the game in Killarney might suit the rebels. He said that there would have been huge pressure on Cork if the Munster final was the first game in the new Pairc UI Chaoimh and with them coming to Killarney this pressure is gone. There is also the fact the Kerry are looking for a 5 Munster titles in a row and we all know what happens when a 5 in a row is on the line. Having said all that, Kerry should still be too strong for Cork and book their place in the next round. HURLING CHAMPIONSHIP TO THROW IN: While a lot of focus will be on the big ball this weekend it is also the weekend when those who love the smaller GAA ball look forward to all year. The Garvey’s County Senior Hurling champions gets underway with four games down for decision. The 2017 showpiece of hurling in the county starts with Abbeydorney taking on Ballyduff at 5.30pm and Ballyheigue meeting Lixnaw at 7.30pm. Crotta O’Neills versus Kilmoyley, the champions for the last two years, on Saturday at 5.30pm followed by the clash of Causeway face St Brendan’s at 7.15pm. PARNELL’S NEWS: Senior County Camogie Meet-andGreet: There was a great turn-out in Causeway when the Kerry camogie team met their fans. Parnells sent a bus load of young players who were delighted to meet their heroes. Parnell’s Summer Hurling and Camogie Camp: This will take place from July 11th to the 13th and anyone interested in booking in their children should contact any club officer. The camp is open to boys and girls from 7 to 13 years of age. Those from Parnells that took part in Feile 2017 will long remember the memories of the big weekend for the club. It was a great honour for the players from Tralee to represent Kerry in the Feile in Kilkenny where they certainly were not in any way overawed. Parnells made a great connection with their hosts the Setanta Hurling-Camogie club that will continue. Feile 2018 will take place in Connacht and the club has a number of young players that are hoping that next year will be their year. The work to get there continues on Friday nights at 7pm in Caherslee. STACKS JUVENILE NEWS: The young players have a weekend off as many will be heading to the Munster final in Killarney. Some of these will be taking part in their Go

Games in the coming week. The club’s Cul Camp takes place next week from July 3rd to 7th in Connolly Park but if you miss this don’t worry the club’s own camp takes place in August from the 8th to the 12th also in Connolly Park. The u12’s A and B teams will have taken on Kenmare on Thursday night while the C team will play their final game against St Pat’s this week. The u14’s put in a great effort to get to the semi- finals of their John West Feile Peile na nOg competition in Sligo where they only lost out in extra time. The players and mentors represented the club with great distinction. Back in local action the u14’s defeated Laune Rangers in the Central League winning 5-20 to 4-07 while the B’s were in Kenmare. The u16’s were unlucky to go down 1-11 to 3-10 to Rathmore in their County League game. Their next game is in mid-July against Dr Crokes. BALLYMAC NEWS: There was no winner of the Lotto from the numbers drawn 7,11,15 and 16 and the next jackpot will be e1,700 with the draw in O’Riodas Bar. The Ballymacelligott Summer Cul Camp takes place from July 31st to August 4th from 10am to 2.30pm daily and booking are still open. The u16’s played away to St Pat’s in their first County League game and were short players on the night with 15 togging out. There was only a few points between the sides at the break but St Pat’s pulled away to win easily in the second half. They train on Tuesday nights and are playin Ballyduff in mid-week. The u14’s travelled to Mallow for their Munster Feile Competition where they were in a group with Cork premier champions Eire Og and Clare Division 1 runners up Ennistymon. The boys had a great wins over both their opponents to set up a clash with favourites Ballincolling from Cork. They just had a little extra over the Ballymac boys winning 5-04 to 3-06 but it was still a great performance by all involved to end as runner up in the Munster Feile. Back home and they faced Castlegregory away in Round 1 of the Central Region League going down narrowly 0-16 to 1-11. The 14 B’s went down to Castleisland Desmonds in Division 3. In the under 12’s the Blue team ended their League Division 4 campaign on a high winning away at Beaufort. They also took part in the Diarmuid O’Brien Annual Blitz in Newmarket, Co Cork and while they didn’t win they certainly represented their club and county with pride. The u10’s took part in the GO Games in Scartaglin in mid-week and have the weekend off due to the Munster final. The u6’s and u8’s also are free due to the big game in Killarney. Many of the underage players will be out supporting the seniors who face Laune Rangers this Saturday at 7.30pm. ST PAT’S NEWS: There was no winner of the Lotto from the numbers drawn 2,5,7 and 26 with the next Jackpot

The Academy takes a break this Sunday. The u10’s trained last week while the u12’s mixed team had two games going down to Cordal and Austin Stacks. The u12 girls are due to face Kerins O’Rahillys this Friday night at 7pm. The u14’s were defeated by a strong Annascaul/Lispole team. The u16’s had a convincing win over Ballymac. The Seniors lost out to Legion in a Senior Football League Division 2 back game going down 2-13 to 3-15. They are due to face Glenflesk this Saturday night, July 1st at 7pm away. St Brendan’s Seniors are set for their next Senior Football Championship game Saturday week when the play East Kerry in Austin Stacks Park at 7.15pm ON THE GREEN’S: TRALEE – On the Tralee greens Kelan O’Connor was the winner of the weekends competition Second was Ned O’Shea Junior with Alan M O’Sullivan third. The 9 hole competition was won by John Sexton from Eamonn Fitzgerald. In the Ladies section the Bella Bia Ladies Waltz was won by Kathleen Finnegan from Mary Murphy and Fionnuala Mann. There is a revised result from the Killarney Exchange sponsored by Weardrobe. The winner is Kathleen Finnegan from Marion Cahillane and Joan Costello. KERINS O’RAHILLY’S CLUB NOTES The Seniors are back after a break and will play town rivals Mitchels this weekend. The game throws in on Saturday night July 1st in Ballyseedy at 7.30pm. The u21’s enjoyed a good win in their opening County Championship round. The saw off West Kerry in Castlegregory 3-17 to 4-11 with a big first half tally of 3-08 setting up the win. They are due to face Dr. Crokes in the quarter finals. The Minors were to play Shannon Rangers in Tarbert this week in the preliminary round with the winners to play Laune Rangers.
