WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... KERRY AIRPORT REPORTS 6% INCREASE IN PASSENGER NUMBERS IN 2016 OVER 325,000 passengers travelled through Kerry Airport last year, marking a 6% increase on the figures for 2015. The positive details of the passenger numbers follow the recent pre-Christmas funding allocation of €2.77 million for Ireland’s four regional airports, including Kerry Airport. The Chairman of Kerry Airport, Denis Cregan, said: “We very much welcome the Minister’s announcement and the continued support of the Department of Transport, Tourism & Sport. Kerry Airport is a key asset for the county and the region and welcomed over 325,000 passengers in 2016, up approximately 6 % on 2015. The Airport needs continued investment and the approximate 600k received recently will assist Kerry Airport in growing passenger numbers into the future. The Airport is looking optimistically forward as tourism numbers to the Island of Ireland grew by almost 11% and while the 6% growth year on year is to

be welcomed, Kerry Airport is falling short of the national figures of 11 % growth for the period, which is a concern but also an opportunity. This key investment in infrastructure in the Airport will ensure we can help deliver the key economic objectives for the region, increased tourism numbers, sustainability and job creation.” The grants announced recently provide assistance towards the operational costs incurred by the four regional airports – Kerry, Donegal, Ireland West Airport Knock and Waterford and were in addition to capital grant funding of €2.7 million that was paid in 2016 towards safety and security investments at the airports. Minister Ross said: “These grant allocations are being made under the Regional Airports Programme 20152019, which supports these airports with both capital and operational grants for projects and activities in the areas of safety and security. The grants bring the total direct

funding by my Department to the regional airports this year to €5.5 million. That amount increases to €13.1 million when the funding provided indirectly for the provision of Public Service Obligation (PSO) air services on the Donegal/Dublin and Kerry/ Dublin routes is included.” Kerry Airport is ideally located for anyone wishing to travel

on business or pleasure with direct flights to seven destinations including: London Luton, London Stansted, Frankfurt-Hahn, Alicante & Faro (summer 2017) with Ryanair and to Dublin with Aer Lingus Regional. For more details, visit http:// kerryairport.ie/website/ or contact +353 66 9764644.

LEGAL CORNER

The More you tell the more you sell!!!

LEGAL MATTERS CORNER MIRIAM MC GILLICUDDY ANSWERS YOUR LEGAL QUERIES

Suzanne wants to do up a will to make sure her affairs are sorted out if anything happens to her. She has a partner and three children aged 10, 12 and 14 years but the family home is in her name. It is very important that Suzanne do up a will as legally the house will go to the three children who are all under 18 years of age and her partner will be left out in the cold as they are not married. If she does a will she can ensure both her partner and children are protected. She would appoint executors who would be managers of her will and they would make sure her wishes are carried into effect. It is important also that she appoints trustees who will mind anything she leaves for the children until they are at least 18 years and possibly older. She also needs to appoint Guardians for the infant children. If she decides to leave anything to her partner she has to be aware of the crippling tax threshold for partners which is only €16,250 and anything she leaves above that is taxed at 33%. However there is an exemption in relation to a home where a partner is living in the home with the person who has left the house to them in the will and they have no other house. There is an exemption in relation to tax for that property but it is being further restricted in the new finance legislation coming through. It must be a principal private residence and the beneficiary must have resided there for three years which would be satisfied in this case. There are other conditions that apply as well. However if Suzanne holds other property and assets she needed to ensure that her partner can adequately look after the children and may have to look at different ways of ensuring this. In addition to doing up a will Suzanne could look at doing up the think ahead form at www.thinkahead.ie and also doing up with her partner an Enduring Power of Attorney which would provide Attorneys to look after their affairs should they ever become of unsound mind. Thinking ahead and making sure that provision is made for loved ones is very important as it saves a lot of heartache for our nearest and dearest. They should do likewise for us and it makes life easier all round. Grieving is hard enough without having to deal with estate problems after a person’s death. LawQuip: Where there is a will there are relations and where there is no will there are even more relations.

ANOTHER AWARD FOR KENNELLYS HAVEN PHARMACY! Haven Pharmacy Kennellys, Tralee, has been awarded the Crystal Clear Mark, Ireland’s first health literacy quality mark. The programme, recognises the critical role pharmacies play in helping patients understand their health issues and the steps they can take to improve their health. It has been developed by MSD and the National Adult Literacy Agency (NALA). To be awarded the Crystal Clear Mark, Haven Pharmacy Kennellys had to complete an online audit and submit evidence to show how their pharmacy was health literacy friendly. The audit was then assessed by NALA who concluded that Haven Pharmacy Kennellys qualified

for the quality mark. Commenting on their accreditation, Pharmacist Owen Daly from Haven Pharmacy Kennellys said, “Pharmacists and wider pharmacy teams all have a responsibility to ensure that they provide a health literacy friendly service to the public. What we have learned through this process is that simple changes can make a big difference to the health of our patients. We are therefore delighted to receive the Crystal Clear Mark. This will enable us to provide an even better level of service to our customers in the local area.” Congratulating Haven Pharmacy Kennellys on their

achievement, Inez Bailey, Director, NALA said, “This programme is an investment in better health outcomes for all people in Ireland and so I would like to extend heartfelt congratulations to Owen Daly and his team for their significant achievement.”

awarded the mark, the pharmacy or general practice can display it on their door and in the pharmacy or waiting room. Customers of Haven Pharmacy Kennellys can now be confident that the pharmacy has been set up in a health literacy friendly way.

Siobhán Maloney from MSD added, “MSD has worked with NALA for a number of years to increase awareness of the importance of healthcare professionals communicating clearly to patients and also for patients to be encouraged to ask questions when they don’t understand information. The Crystal Clear quality mark for pharmacies and general practices is a natural extension of this work. Once

Movie Review

Adam Kavanagh AKA Mr Movie reviews

LA LA LAND REVIEW Director: Damien Chazelle Starring: Emma Stone, Ryan Gosling, J.K Simmons and John Legend La La Land is a musical revolving around themes of love, passion, music and following your dreams. The film follows two young dreamers living in Hollywood, a jazz pianist named Seb (Ryan Gosling) and a barista hoping to become an actress, Mia (Emma Stone). The film looks at the couple as they fall in love after a few chance meetings. This may sound like your typical romance film however Damien Chazelle’s film is a joy to watch; as the characters break into amazingly choreographed song and dance at the drop of a hat. The stellar cast does a marvellous job of making their characters feel raw, real and relatable while singing and dancing around the screen. Chazelle makes another great movie (his last film Whiplash, which I would highly recommend – it is one of my favourite films - was a critical darling and was nominated and won countless accolades at award shows including the Oscars) and now La La Land is a front-runner for ”Best Picture” at the Oscars this year. It is all shot beautifully and at times feels like you’re watching a classic musical. He uses colours to make the screen explode with personality. You can tell he was very passionate about this film as every scene radiates emotion. Even with a heart-breaking ending (which I won’t spoil here), I still walked out of the screening smiling, as did everyone else, I noticed. It is hard to criticise this film. It was such a breath of fresh air to see an original musical with such heart and feeling, this has already shot to the top of my list as the best film of the year so far, and even though it’s early January, I expect it to remain there for a while. Mr Movie’s Fact: Emma Watson was originally cast as Mia but dropped out to star in Beauty and the Beast and Emma Stone replaced her. Whilst Ryan Gosling dropped out of Beauty and the Beast to be in La La Land.

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... ARE 2/3S OF KERRY FAMILIES MISSING OUT ON HOME CARERS TAX CREDIT? Almost two thirds of people in Ireland are unaware of the existence of the home carer’s tax credit according findings from Taxback.com’s latest nationwide survey. The tax refund experts sought to ascertain the views of taxpayers from throughout the country on this issue, as they believe that close to 2/3rds of qualifying families fail to claim this credit. The credit of €1,000 can be claimed by any married couple, where one spouse is the home carer and cares for one/more dependent persons - which includes children under 18. Taxback believe that is those who stay home to look after their children who are most likely to be unaware of their eligibility for the credit. The 2011 Census identified that 339,918 classed their economic status as ‘looking after home/family’ and of those, it is estimated that at least 230,000 have children. Barry Flanagan, Senior Tax Manager with www.taxback.

com, said “Our most recent figures, which are for tax returns in 2014, indicate a total of 80,900 people claimed the credit at a cost to the exchequer of €60.9 million or an average of €752 each. Given that Revenue treats taxpayers as units this means a total of 80,900 families claimed the credit. If we contrast this with the estimated no. of 230,000 households where one parent looks after the child or children in the home, it appears that only about one third are claiming their entitlement. We are not altogether surprised at the low uptake given that our survey revealed that most people are simply unaware of the existence of the tax credit. This leaves a huge 65% of these families in Kerry and throughout Ireland who could potentially benefit from this credit – we are calling on families in the county where one parent stays at home to mind the children to check whether or not they can claim this relief as they could be missing out”.

OBITUARY

J.P. Leen. The death has taken place in Arabella Ballymacelligott of J.P. Leen after a short illness. In his youth he was a marvellous sportsman, excelling in both Gaelic Football and Handball. He has a unique record winning All Ireland medals in both codes. In 1963 he won an All Ireland junior football medal with Kerry and in 1975 he won an All Ireland club medal in Handball with Ballymac. Perhaps J.P.’s greatest game on the football field was during 196.

The Option of the Stay-atHome Parent Barry continued, “Given the current burden of childcare costs for many families, the availability of this tax credit could be a help to couples who are considering a one income household, as it allows the stay at home partner to work up to a limit of €7,200 a year. In addition, if the stay-at-home partner’s income is in excess of the aforementioned limit,

the credit may still be of use, as long as it doesn’t exceed €9,200”. Revenue Efforts Taxback.com say that Revenue have made a concerted effort to inform taxpayers of this entitlement by proactively alerting those eligible to the availability of the credit. However Taxback say feedback from their clients reveals that this credit is at best misunderstood and frequently unknown.

KERINS O RAHILLYS LAUNCH THEIR ANNUAL 10K EVENT

Well renowned GAA club Kerins O Rahillys last week launched their annual 10k event which takes place on Sunday Jan 29th . While last years participants received a 1916 centenary medal , this years entrants will receive a medal in honour of the late club chairman Pat Healy , survived by his wife and daughter Lillie and Lillian (pictured here in the foreground ). The 10k is open to runners and walkers and there is a team event as well as a Ladies and Gents event . Registration /Number collection takes part in the clubhouse on Saturday Jan 28th (2-8pm) as well as Sunday morning before the event starts at 11am (8-10.30am). You can also register online on Facebook , the fee is €20 and refreshments will be provided by the club afterwards (Photo by D Crean/TraleeToday).

He and his midfield partner the late Patsy Nolan R.I.P., had the best of matters against no less an opponent than the legendary Mick O’Connell and his partner J Murphy in a game which saw Ballymac sensationally defeat South Kerry in the Kerry County Championship. He won 4 Castleisland district league medals, 1962, 63, 64 and 69. J.P. Leen was the last Ballymac man to wear the Kerry Senior Jersey in Championship Football. May he rest in peace. Matt Leen.

A massive 2,800 people signed up around the country to host Halloween parties and €385,000 has been raised so far, with more donations coming in every day. FOUR MEN... FOUR WEDDINGS???

Pat Sheehy (seated second from left) and friends having a great night at the Na Gael GAA Club One Wedding & Funeral at their fundraiser on Saturday night in the Club.

KNOW YOUR RIGHTS: CONSUMER RIGHTS DURING SALES Question: What are my consumer rights when I buy something in the sales? Can I return sales items? Answer: Your consumer rights during a sale are exactly the same as at any other time of the year. Your rights do not change just because you bought the item in a sale. Goods should be of merchantable quality, fit for their intended purpose and as described. If they are not, you are entitled to a repair, a replacement or a refund.

Enjoying the Na Gael GAA Club Tralee Fundraising night last Saturday “One Wedding & a Funeral” were, Mary,Ciara and Eimear Murphy.

If there is a fault with goods that you bought at full price and are now on sale at a reduced price, you are entitled to a refund of the full price (if the shop is willing to offer a refund). Shop notices such as “No Refunds” or “No Exchanges” do not limit your rights, if you have a complaint about faulty items. However, you are not entitled to a refund because you change your mind about something you have bought in a shop, whether this is during the sales or at any other time of the year. Many shops do allow you to exchange goods that you have had second thoughts about, but this is at their discretion. It is a good idea to check the shop’s refund policy before buying anything. You should always keep your receipts as proof of purchase and the price paid. This does not necessarily have to be the shop receipt. You could show your credit or debit card statement if you used one or any other documentation that proves it was purchased. WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... EDDI READER’S NATIONWIDE TOUR TAKES IN SIAMSA THIS FEBRUARY Scottish songstress, Eddi Reader celebrates her 30year career with the release of her first career spanning compilation Eddi Reader The Best Of. She returns to Irish shores from the 12th - 26th of February 2017 for her ninth consecutive nationwide tour. Hitting Siamsa Tire in Tralee on Sun 19th Feb , she also takes in Sligo, Galway, Dublin, Ballymaloe, Limerick, , Armagh, Omagh, Letterkenny and Belfast, she will be joined by her regular band members, John Douglas (guitar & vocals), Boo Hewerdine (guitar & vocals), Alan Kelly (piano accordion) and Kevin McGuire (double bass & vocals). With her captivating and powerful performance, Eddi Reader has effortlessly developed into one of popular music’s most thrilling and affecting performers. What sets Eddi apart is the depth

and quality of the emotional performance and ability not only to move the listener, but also to connect her experience to that of her audience. Having first hit the limelight in the 1980’s with the group Fairground Attraction (who enjoyed huge chart success with their debut No.1 single Perfect and album First of a Million Kisses), Eddi went on to collaborate on many celebrated projects throughout the years, famously harmonizing with Annie Lennox while touring with the Eurythmics and paying her punk dues with a successful stint in the group Gang of Four. However it has been Eddi’s subsequent solo albums that have cemented her image as a powerful figure in British music. With 9 critically acclaimed solo albums, 3 BRIT awards, a #1 single and MBE in tow,

2016 welcomed the release of her first career spanning compilation entitled, The Best Of, featuring material from across Eddi’s prestigious 30 year recording career. Including thirty of her most consistently beautiful, often deeply personal and intimate songs, Eddi Reader The Best Of gives us a generous insight into her wide ranging artistry and songwriting, time and again showcasing her knack for picking a great song and making it her own. Declared, “a definitive musical portrait of one of the finest voices this country has produced, whether that be in folk, pop or any other genre” by Folk Radio UK. The Herald Maverick “One of Scotland’s Greatest National Treasures” The Scotsman “Eddi Reader is one of my

favourite singers of all time” Jools Holland “One of the great voices in British music” Acoustic magazine “The energy she uses in a single performance could probably power a wee village on the outskirts of her native Glasgow” The Scotsman Sun Feb 19th – TRALEE Siamsa Tíre http://www.siamsatire.com 066 7123055

DESTINATION KERRY TARGETING GERMANS AT HOLIDAY FAIR IN STUTTGART Tourism Ireland in Germany kicks off its busy programme of promotions for 2017 this week – with a strong presence at CMT (Caravan, Motor & Tourism Fair) in Stuttgart. Tourism Ireland is joined at CMT by 14 Irish tourism businesses, including Destination Kerry. The nine-day travel fair attracted 220,000 visitors in 2016 – among them leading travel writers, tour operators and travel agents, as well as many thousands of German holidaymakers looking for ideas and suggestions for their next holiday. CMT provides a valuable opportunity for the participating Irish companies

to showcase and sell their product and to communicate what is unique about Kerry and Ireland as a great holiday destination for German travellers. Promoting the Wild Atlantic Way and the Star Wars connection with Kerry will continue to be a major focus of Tourism Ireland’s activity in Germany, and elsewhere around the world, in 2017. The organisation will also continue to highlight ease of access from Germany to the island of Ireland, including the Ryanair flight from FrankfurtHahn to Kerry Airport and the new Lufthansa flight from Frankfurt to Shannon, announced for summer 2017.

Zoë Redmond, Tourism Ireland’s manager for Central Europe, said: “CMT in Stuttgart is our first major promotion of 2017 in Germany, providing an excellent opportunity to spread the word about the many great things to see and do on the island of Ireland and to entice visitors to put Ireland on their holiday ‘wish-list’ for 2017.

PIC SHOWS: John Hickey, Destination Kerry (second left); Julie O’Connell (left) and Sonja Fischer (fourth left), both Tourism Ireland; and the Irish tourism companies attending CMT Stuttgart.

BEST OF BEAUTY 2016

Hello beautiful people! I hope you’re all having a fabulous week. This week I’m doing a round up of my top beauty products of 2016. These products are ones that I used religiously throughout the year and would 100% recommend to anyone to try.

BLANK CANVAS COSMETICS MASTER SERIES PALETTE ONE –

This palette is everything you need in your life. I promise. It’s my everyday go to eyeshadow palette. I don’t do my makeup without using it. It’s only €34 euro and amazing value for money. I’ve had it for over a year and I have hit pan on basically all of them so I will be repurchasing too. My most used shades are ‘Brazen’, ‘Hibiscus’ and ‘Downtown’.

KYLIE COSMETICS LIPKITS –

I couldn’t not mention 2016 makeup favourites and not mention Kylie Lip Kits. These basically replaced all other lipsticks that I use, my favourite shades were Mary Jo K, Candy K & Brown Sugar. The kits all come with lip liners too which are fab. Also gloss kinda took over my life in the second half of 2016, in particular the Candy K Gloss.

CLARINS SUMMER BRONZING COMPACT –

I think this was a limited edition product which honestly devastates me. This bronzer is the perfect shade and the blush shade in the middle is not too pink, it’s more of a peachy shade.

BEAUTY BLENDER –

If you have not tried The Original Beauty Blender you have not lived. It blends foundation and concealer seamlessly, it can be used damp with setting powder to set you foundation and under eyes, it’s just basically what you’ve been missing. For less than €20 you can’t go wrong.

LAURA MERCIER TRANSLUCENT POWDER –

HANDS DOWN THE BEST SETTING POWDER I HAVE TRIED. You don’t look cakey, you don’t look dry, your makeup doesn’t crack, you basically look all around flawless. If you tend to be on the dry side of life, apply the powder using a damp beauty blender to add hydration to the skin. I always press my powder into the skin rather than swiping it as to not move any of the products underneath around.

BECCA COSMETICS X JACLYN HILL CHAMPAGNE POP –

2016 was the year of the highlight, my favourite? Becca Cosmetics Champagne Pop! It is the most beautiful, pigmented, glowing highlight I have ever came across. It suits multiple skin tones, it’s not too frosty and not too gold. I have been out of it for a month now and I think it’s about time I treat myself to another. Definitely my highlight of 2016!

That’s it for this week! I hope you found this little list of tips helpful! If anyone wants to get in contact with me email me at ‘BexblahBeauty@gmail.com’ or message my Facebook page ‘Bexblah Beauty.

BEXBLAH

FITNESS!

HELLO EVERYONE!

I’m finally back into the full swing of reality after Christmas and then a weeks holidays. During my week off I really got stuck back into the gym which was great. I think this time of year is when a lot of people go on the whole ‘New Year New Me’ craze, but set extreme unrealistic goals (I was one of those people), so I thought I’d give my top tips on changing/improving your lifestyle. 1. Eat a Variety of Foods - You need more than 40 different nutrients for good health and no single food can supply them all. Today’s food supply makes it easy to eat a wide variety of foods whether or not you are buying fresh foods to cook, taking advantage of ready-prepared dishes and meals or buying “take-away” foods. Balance your choice over time! 2. Base your diet on plenty of foods rich in carbohydrates - Most people do not eat enough of foods such as bread, pasta, rice, other cereals and potatoes. A lot of the calories in your diet should come from these foods. Try wholegrain bread, pasta and other wholegrain cereals, too, to increase your fibre intake. Too many people try and ‘cut carbs’ for no valid reason, don’t be one of those people. 3. Enjoy plenty of fruits and vegetables Most of us do not eat enough of these foods either although they provide important protective nutrients. Find what you like and stick to that, no point forcing yourself to eat what you don’t like. 4. Maintain a healthy body weight and feel good - The weight that is right for you depends on many factors including your sex, height, age and heredity. Being overweight increases your risk of a wide range of diseases including heart disease and cancer. Excess body fat results when you eat more calories than you need. These extra calories can come from any caloric nutrient - protein, fat, carbohydrate or alcohol- but fat is the most concentrated source of calories. Physical activity is a good way of increasing the energy you expend each day and it can make you feel good. The message is simple: if you are gaining weight you need to be more active.

20

5. Eat moderate portions - reduce, don’t eliminate foods - If you keep portion sizes reasonable, it’s easier to eat all the foods you enjoy without having to eliminate any. Get yourself a food scales to measure out portion sizes, you’ll be surprised! It’s all about balance! 6. Eat regularly - Skipping meals, especially breakfast, can lead to outof-control hunger, often resulting in helpless overeating. Snacking between meals can help curb hunger, but don’t eat so much as to substitute for proper meals. Don’t forget to count your snacks as part of your total calorie intake. 7. Drink plenty of water - Adults need to drink at least 2 litres of fluid a day, even more if it’s very hot or they are physically active. Start small and aim for 2 litres and then build it from there. 8. Get on the move - As we have seen, too many calories and not enough activity can result in weight gain. Moderately physical activity helps burn off those extra calories. It is also good for the heart and circulatory system and for general health and well-being. So, make physical activity part of your daily routine. Use the stairs instead of the lift. Go for a walk in your lunch break. You don’t have to be an athlete to get on the move! 9. Start now and make changes gradually - Gradual changes in your lifestyle are much easier to make than major changes all at once. For three days, write down the foods and drinks you consume at meals and as snacks. Do you have too few fruits and or portions

Friday 20th January 2016

of vegetables? To start with, try to eat just one extra piece of fruit and vegetables a day. Are your favourite foods making you gain weight? Don’t eliminate those foods and feel miserable, but try to choose healthier options or eat smaller portions. And start using the stairs at work! 10. Remember, it is all about balance - There are no ‘good’ or ‘bad’ foods, only good or bad nutrition. Don’t feel guilty about the foods you love, rather eat them in moderation and choose other foods to provide the balance and variety that are vital to good health.

Say goodbye to dentures and adhesives forever!

Are you tired of sore gums, ill fitting dentures and messy denture adhesive? Would you love to smile and eat with confidence?

Teeth in a Day (All on 4) is a proven, revolutionary dental treatment for a patient that is missing all their natural

teeth and who is tired of wearing an ill fitting and often sore denture. While there are many options available to people who struggle with an ill-fitting denture, our ‘Teeth in a Day’ (Implant Supported Bridges) offer you the chance to throw your denture away for good and feel the benefits of never having to worry about a denture again. They are a permanent solution that with proper care will never need to be replaced. Implant Supported Bridges are attached to dental implants for a permanent new set of teeth that look and feel natural and are non removable. No more putting your dentures in a glass overnight. Instead you brush your teeth as you would with natural teeth, in fact some of our patients have commented ‘it feels like my own teeth grew back!’

Restore your smile, your chewing ability and your confidence in just one day. Missing teeth causes bone loss. Significant bone loss can shrink the contours of the jaw bone, causing wrinkled lips and a sunken mouth and chin. Teeth in a Day Fixed Implant Supported Bridges are a durable solution with natural looking replacement teeth. There’s no plate. It’s simply secured on four or more dental implants. This solution stimulates bone maintenance, restores chewing function, and gets rid of the uncomfortable and painful feeling of wearing dentures.

Advantages of ‘Teeth in a Day’ Fixed Implant Supported Bridges (All on 4)

• No more painful and ill fitting dentures • Natural looking smile restored • Fully fixed and non-removable • Chewing ability is restored, can chew all types of food • No more removing dentures or denture adhesive • Prevents further bone loss • Go from no teeth, to fixed teeth in one day • Minimal pain/discomfort during procedure • Recovery time is minimal

Call us today on 066 7123315 for your FREE Teeth in a Day (All on 4) Consultation.

New Year, Start Living Again Teeth in a Day

How it works

At your free consultation, we’ll take the time to listen to you, address your concerns and questions and fully explain the procedure and the options available to you. If you decide to proceed, a full clinical examination will be carried out by Dr. Colm O’Loghlen including X rays and 3D CT scanning. We are one of only a few clinics in Ireland with a CT scanner on site. This minimises patient inconvenience and allows for the most advanced analysis of your teeth and needs. The full implant procedure is carried out in one day. The implants are placed in the morning and you leave that afternoon with fully fixed teeth having thrown your denture in the bin!

Nervous?

"No one should ever go to bed with their teeth in a glass" Per-Ingvar Brånemark, Inventor of the Dental Implant.

Testimonials “I am so happy. Colm really has changed my life” “I had sedation – the time did fly! I had 4 implants in my upper jaw. I didn’t feel them going in, and it didn’t hurt at all”

If you’re nervous, no problem, the procedure is pain free, and some of our patients elect to have a IV sedation or a mild oral sedative to complete the treatment.

“My enjoyment of food – the flavour and the texture is just so much better”

LOCAL – Have all your treatment completed in Tralee with Dr Colm O’Loghlen.

“I am so thrilled to show off my teeth – and all my friends and family can see why I went for this option. No way I’d go back. No regrets.”

SAFER – With our own CT Scanning equipment, digitally planning your procedure results in safer implant placement.

• Transparent pricing policy • A full range of treatment options to stabilise loose dentures • Tax relief applicable treatment • Sedation available • Payment plan available • Affordable • FREE consultation

KINDER – Dr Colm O’Loghlen’s experience, training and technology investment, leads to quicker surgery, reduced swelling and improved recovery time.

Cholesterol CHOLESTEROL is a waxy fat-like substance that your body needs (in small amounts) and is found in the fats in your blood. Having high cholesterol may increase your risk of heart disease. Along with lifestyle choices such as diet there are also other risk factors to consider, such as family history and age so regular visits to your GP is essential to have your cholesterol checked. LAUGHTER ....THE BEST MEDICINE ! AN ATHEIST IS DEEP SEA FISHING

An atheist is out on the Atlantic ocean deep sea fishing when his boat is attacked by the Kraken. Huge tentacles wrap around the boat and begin to rip it in two. He looks over the boat straight into the jaws of the beast and screams “Oh God! Help!” Time freezes. A ray of light shines down on him and he hears a deep voice say “I thought you didn’t believe I was real.” “Come on, God, cut me a break!” the man responds. “A few seconds ago, I didn’t believe the Kraken was real either!”

MY WIFE REALLY WANTED A DOG, SO I BOUGHT HER A PUG.

Despite the squashed nose, bulging eyes and rolls of fat, the dog really seems to like her.

ONE SUNDAY MORNING, THE PASTOR...

Noticed little Alex standing in the foyer of the church staring up at a large plaque. It was covered with names and small American flags mounted on either side of it. The six-year old had been staring at the plaque for some time, so the pastor walked up: stood beside the little boy: and said quietly, “Good morning, Alex.” “Good morning. Pastor,” he replied, still focused on the plaque. “Pastor, what is this?” The pastor replied, “Well, son, it’s a memorial to all the young men and women who died in the service.” Soberly, they just stood together, staring at the large plaque. Finally, little Alex’s voice, barely audible and trembling with fear asked,”Which service, the 8:00 or the 10:30?”

A PRIEST AND A RABBI GO GOLFING...

A Priest and a Rabbi go golfing. On the first hole, the Rabbi swings and misses, yelling, “Goddammit, I missed!” The Priest chastises him in response, telling him “Don’t say that, or else God will strike you down.” They go to the next hole, and the same thing happens. The Rabbi yells “Goddammit, I missed!” And the Priest tells him again, “You shouldn’t say that or else God will

strike you down.” They make it all the way to the 18th hole without incident... until the Rabbi swings and misses, his club flies from his fingers. He yells at the top of his lungs “Goddammit, I missed!” and the Priest is struck by lightning. God yells “Goddammit, I missed!”

GRANDMA GOES TO THE DOCTOR...

A doctor that had been seeing an 80-year-old woman for most of her life finally retired. At her next checkup, the new doctor told her to bring a list of all the medicines that had been prescribed for her. As the doctor was looking through these his eyes grew wide as he realized Grandma had a prescription for birth control pills. “Mrs. Smith, do you realize these are birth control pills?” “Yes, they help me sleep at night.” “Mrs. Smith, I assure you there is absolutely nothing in these that could possibly help you sleep!” She reached out and patted the young doctor’s knee and said, “Yes, dear, I know that. But every morning, I grind one up and mix it in the glass of orange juice that my 16-year-old Granddaughter drinks. And believe me it definitely helps me sleep at night.”

AN ENGLISHMAN WALKS INTO A PUBcoffee IN LONDON morning As he approaches the bar he hears two women speaking with heavy accents. “Are you ladies from Scotland?” He asks. “It’s Wales, actually!” One of the woman replies. “Sorry.” says the man “Are you whales from Scotland?”

TORQUING CARS! FORD TOP VAN MARQUE OF 2016

It was a good year for light commercial vehicles, with sales of almost 24,000 showing an 18.25pc improvement over 2015 registrations. Ford was the top brand, with almost 27pc of the total LCV market, followed by Volkswagen (16.49pc), Renault (12.68pc), Toyota (7pc) and Peugeot (6.37pc) filling out the top five. The Ford Transit medium and large vans range were the most popular models, with 3,329 units registered, followed by the same brand’s compact van Transit Connect (2,269), the Volkswagen Caddy (2,225), Renault’s Trafic (1,484) and Peugeot’s Partner (1,444). GET READY TO START TALKING TO YOUR CAR, YOUR TV AND YOUR FRIDGE - AMAZON ALEXA STEALS THE SHOW AT CES 2017 Voice-activated technology is nothing new. It’s been around for a number of years, made mainstream with the arrival of Apple’s Siri assistant for iOS gadgets in 2011, followed by Google Now on Android devices the following year.

Although it what was perceived as a gimmick at first – largely because the novelty of using services such as Siri soon wore off after launch – voice technology has been gaining some momentum in recent years. As the technology has advanced, it has become more clever, and is now much better at understanding different voices and accents thrown at it. However, it has only been within the last year that it has truly taken off with the success of Amazon’s Echo speaker, which features the ingenious Alexa smart assistant.Alexa has taken the world by storm due to the technology’s ability to accurately comprehend human voices and thus translate the needs of the user without needing physical activation. This has spurred a new range of voice-activated devices at the world’s biggest tech show, CES 2017, taking place in Las Vegas this month. On Tuesday at CES, Korean electronics company LG announced a new fridge that’s powered by Amazon Alexa, as well as a robot butler that uses Alexa’s voice recognition technology to complete household tasks such as turning on the air conditioner or changing a dryer cycle.Ford has also teamed up with Amazon to enable drivers to listen to audiobooks inside the vehicle, search and transfer local destinations to navigation, request news, play music and add items to their shopping list using vocal commands. And the voice-activated virtual assistant CES announcements didn’t end there. Google’s Alexa rival, Assistant, will be making its way onto a slew of Android TVs from the likes of Sharp and Sony later this year.

THE RENAULT TALISMAN – THE CAR THAT THE FRENCH WON’T GIVE US The Renault Talisman is a handsome French car. It’s available as a saloon and as an estate, and its handsome design makes it arguably one of the more attractive European cars in this segment. A range of engines are available, from an efficient 1.5-litre diesel to a 200bhp turbocharged petrol, and Euro NCAP has awarded the model its maximum five-star rating. So why haven’t we reviewed one?

But the Talisman isn’t for sale here – Renault decided not to bring it to the UK or Ireland , or any other right-hand-drive market. This choice was made in 2015, if not before, based on the fact that Brits (and Irish ) don’t buy big French cars anymore. Renault has also stopped selling the Espace here, and travellers to foreign climes may have noticed an unfamiliar Citroen by the same Elysée – another French car that hasn’t made it across the Channel. The Talisman looks a lot like the Megane (which remains on sale in Blighty) and was designed by Alexis Martot, who also penned the latest Koleos. These cars share the C-shaped DRLs and the slightly exaggerated front and rear light clusters. It has a masculine look and talks Renault’s design language more fluently than anything else in the company’s stable. The interior is pretty coherent too, with great space for all passengers, a huge boot in the estate version and an all-round demi-premium feel. They don’t sell it here, and they don’t plan to. The UK has historically been a crucial market for car manufacturers so it’s rare for it to be deprived of models sold in the rest of Europe, despite the contrarian righthand-drive persuasion. But post-Brexit, we can expect growing reluctance from car makers to cater for their idiosyncratic ways – future omissions are possible, especially from the French.

TESLA OPENS FIRST CHARGING POINT IN IRELAND It is at the Powerscourt Hotel in Enniskerry.

Another 10 charging sites are scheduled to be installed in coming weeks, the company says. Destination is one of three ways to charge Teslas - home (for everyday travel) and super (for long journeys) are the other two. The electric-car maker says that with the three options you don’t waste time and can go as far as 613km on a single charge. The company also says it is “continuing to build momentum for our Irish store opening and first Irish deliveries next year”. Meantime, the Powerscourt charger will not just be for Irish drivers but will allow UK/European owners to avail of it when visiting here. A spokeswoman said owners of the Model S (seven registered in Ireland this year) and Model X travel all over Europe thanks to the expanding charging network. She said: “UK customers don’t think twice about driving to Italy, France, Spain, Switzerland and Germany.”

TALKING SPORT WITH THE TRALEE ADVERTISER expected in February.

with “The Voice” Pat Harnett

FAI NATIONAl P.R.O. OF THE YEAR LET’S USE OUR HEAD’S – A SPORTS FORUM ON CONCUSSION: We have seen concussion and how it’s dealt with on the side lines making the headlines again this week. Both Munster and Leinster are being examined as to how their HIA (Head Injury Assessment) work after Johnny Sexton and Conor Murray received big hits. There is no indication that either Province did not follow the correct procedures on both the side line and in the dressing room. And in fairness to rugby at all levels they have been very proactive in dealing with how players with even a hint of concussion are treated. And anyone who heard the parents of Ulster teenager Ben Robinson, who died on the field, speak will never forget their tragic story. I was at a talk on concussion by the FAI’s Chief Medical Officer recently and he said that the Aviva or Thomond Park are amongst the safest places to get concussion. His point was that sport at the highest level has full medical care and facilities for treatment at hand. The question is that if a player gets a bang in the head on the soccer field, or during a local football or hurling match or at a rugby game are all our coaches equipped to deal with it. Coaches are always under pressure from all angles to get results and have to be brave to take off a player with any hint of a head injury. Forum on Concussion: I feel the three major sports – soccer, GAA and rugby – along with any other sport that wishes to attend should come together and invite the top sports medical people in the country, some sports persons who have suffered concussion and maybe even the Robinsons or other parents for a wide ranging discussion on concussion, on the best practice at the local side line where there are no facilities for HIA and how we train all our coaches on how to identify and deal with their players. I am sure Tralee IT would host the Forum and it could also be valuable to its students doing sports medicine. Hopefully the governing bodies in Kerry will take up this call. STORIES FROM THE HARDWOOD: Warrior winning run continues: At the top level of any sport there are no easy wins, even if on paper it looks like there could be. And it proved that way for Garvey’s Tralee Warriors as they defeated KUBS by 10 points in a low scoring, tense encounter. The Dublin side has proved to be stern opposition to all the top sides and this was the case in front of another huge crowd in

40

TRALEE ADVERTISER

the Complex. Warriors are on a great run but were not able to rise to their usual heights on this occasion. But from a positive point of view the Tralee side are finding ways to win tough games which will please coach Mark Bernsen. On this occasion the endeavour of Kieran Donaghy Darren O’Sullivan and Trae Pemberton, especially when the game was in the melting pot inside the last five minutes that was the most impressive thing. KUBS were not helped by their American Brian Edwards fouling out midway through the third quarter. Pantovic and Pemberton got Warriors off to a good start but KUBS stayed involved to be just 19-17 behind at the end of the first quarter. Warriors opened the gap to 6 at the half time buzzer 30-24 with the visitors having the gap at the conclusion of the third quarter 47-44. It was those last few minutes when the game was on the line that all the players stepped up and Warriors took the win 67-57. It keeps them in the perfect position to qualify for the play-offs and if they can have a full squad they will be a match for anyone. Scorers, Warriors T Pemberton (26) K Donaghy (20) G Pantovic (10), D Bogdanovic (4), D O Sullivan (3), D O Hanlon (2), R Leonard (2) Kubs, K Foley (22), B Edwards (11), S Ingle (6), C James (5) C Ross (4), S Mc Cann (4), A Flood (3), J Riles (2). This weekend all the teams in the SuperLeague are in action in the National Basketball Arena in a feast of top class basketball. Warriors take on SSE Moycullen at 4pm on Sunday. The next big Superleague Saturday night game in Tralee is scheduled for Saturday 11th February when they host rivals Pyrobel Killester. WHO ARE THE WHEELBLASTERS? One of the most enjoyable things about attending basketball games is the show surrounding the main game. And at the weekend the Kingdom Wheelblasters provided that entertainment at half time showing off their impressive wheelchair basketball skill. I must admit I did not know anything about the Kingdom Wheelblasters. They are an Irish Wheelchair Association affiliated sports club for children and teenagers with a physical disability. They have been in existence for over two years and have grown from 4 to 9 children and their siblings. The club meets fortnightly in John Mitchels sports hall. The club will be hosting a wheelchair basketball blitz on the 8th of February with 7 clubs from all over the country taking part. Over 60 took place in a similar blitz in Dundalk last weekend so a similar number is

ST BRENDAN’S BC NEWS: In the Boys u16 Division 3 St Brendan’s defeated Ballybunion 46-30 to get their New Year off to a winning start. The Tralee boys were the fastest out of the traps and were 12-9 ahead at the end of the first quarter. They opened the gap to 9 by the end of the half and continued to dominate their North Kerry counterparts. Niall Fitzmaurice, Cian Devine, Michael Dowling and Thomas Scally were amongst the St Brendan’s boys who played well. In other results in Boys u14 Division 2 St Paul’s defeated St Brendan’s 38-21, in the 14’s Division 3 it was St Brendan’s 16-18 St Anne’s while in the Boys u12 Division 2 St Pauls won 24-19. UPDATE FROM THE TRAPS: RACING AS NORMAL AT THE TRACK: There is racing at the Kingdom Greyhound Stadium this Friday and Saturday night with the first race out of the traps at 7.42pm. Entries are now been taken for the GMHD. ie Juvenile Classic that starts on Friday, February 10th open to January 2015 Whelps or later. Official and unofficial trials for entrants to the Juvenile Classic will take place on the three Friday evenings preceding the event. Any owners or Trainers who wish to trial their dogs in Tralee from here to close of entries on Tuesday February 7th should call the Racing Office on 061 448057. NEWS FROM BEHIND THE WHEEL: MOTORSPORT IRELAND, CLUBS AND CREWS SORT INSURANCE CRISIS: Following a lot of discussions between Motor Sport Ireland and the clubs but thankfully an agreement has been reached and all the rallies on the calendar will now go ahead. The levies agreed will see competitors being charged e187.50 for mini-stages, e270 for multi-stages, International / Multi Day e375, Rally Sprint e37.50, Forestry e75 and Juniors/ Historics e187.50. These are on top of entry fees to the events while the event permits for clubs will also cost more. Tralee man Richard Talbot is Rallies Committee Chairman and he is happy that this issue has been sorted for now. “While there is an unavoidable increase in levies it is great that club and crews can now plan ahead for the season. All clubs will run the stage events listed in the 2017 calendar and clubs will pay a non-refundable deposit in February for their events. “There is also the possibility of a supporter’s club/fund being set up to help with future increases in insurance”. WRC: Rallying on the world stage gets underway this week with the traditional seasonal opener the Monte Carlo Rally. Kerry eye will be on Paul Nagle, who along with Kris Meeke, will be in new Citroen C3 WRC as part of the Citroen Total Abu Dhabi World Rally Team. The Killarney co-driver was involved in the design of the car so this is an important season for the duo. ON SIDE: INTERNATIONAL TEAM SELECTED: The final members of the Tralee / Irish team that will be heading to the International Children’s Games in Lithuania have been selected. The soccer squad will take on teams from other nations in June and those on the squad are Sean McGrath, Sean Kennedy, Soni Rramani, Padraig Hillard, Kevin Goulding, Philip Evans, Leo Gaxha and Cian Brosnan.

TALKING SPORT WITH THE TRALEE ADVERTISER TRIALS UNDERWAY: Following on from the decision of the Kerry District League to enter the Airtircity U17 League the large number of players who have attended the trials proves that the appetite is certainly there for top level soccer in the county. The coaches will now select the squad for the coming season. WHAT’S UP AT THE PARK: There was disbelief in soccer circles when St Brendan’s Park gave a second walkover of the season in the Denny Premier League. They are now at the bottom of the table on 1 point from 7 games and in a huge relegation battle. This is hugely concerning for all in the game, especially when the club is so successful at underage level. Reports say that while the manager had a full squad on Saturday night by Sunday morning there was a multitude of cry-offs. There seems to be a number of issues and in truth there are in-club issues that can only be sorted behind the walls of Christy Leahy Park. Everyone involved in soccer in Kerry is hoping that The Park can get things right at senior level as the Kerry District League needs them. Tralee Dynamos are in a rebuilding phase but are doing ok with 1 win and 2 draws from their 5 games with those around them having played more fixtures. The landscape of the Denny Premier League has certainly changed over the last few seasons with Castleisland and Dingle Bay Rovers coming to the fore while Killarney Celtic are again one of the major forces and have also reached the Last 16 of the FAI Junior Cup. Fenit and Killarney Athletic lead the Premier this season so it is certainly an interesting campaign this season. Interestingly from a soccer point of view in Tralee Mitchels Avenue are top of the Denny Division 1 A followed by Tralee Celtic while Strand Road top Division 1 B. PARK TEAM OF THE WEEK: While as we covered above The Park are struggling at senior level their underage is going well and here is their Team of the Week for this week: Sean Broderick 14A, Owen Healy 15B, Sean O’Connell 13A, Jordan Mason 15B, Jordan Mason 15B, Shane Jordan 17s, Cian O’Neill 13B, Odhran Ferris 13C, Padraig McCannon 16’s who also make the Kerry Schoolboys Team of the Week, Ryan McMahon 11’s, Adam Wharton 13A, Aaron Ward 17’s. IN THE SQUARE: AUSTIN’S A 100: When a person reaches 100 they get s cheque and a letter from the President. I am not sure if the same happens for clubs but if it those then Austin Stacks should be keeping an eye for the postman as they have hit that major milestone. The Austin Stacks Centenary Corporate Lunch will be held in Ballygarry House Hotel on Friday 24th February. Two years ago this was an unrivalled success with over 500 people enjoying a great day/evening/morning with excellent food/wine/entertainment – Joe Brolly and Star stole the show !! Plans are in place by the club for a top class event on Feb 24th and tables /places are now available – if 2015 is anything to go by, demand will be very brisk indeed. The cost is €1,000 for a table of 10 (businesses, families etc.) or pro-rata for smaller numbers. The organising committee would be delighted to put tables of Rockie supporters/ members together if required. STACKS STORIES: The u6’s/8’s and u10’s enjoyed a great day out last Sunday in the Mercy Mouthawk Gym. This was the first event of the 100th year of the Rock club

started with an enjoyable session for our youngest players. They will be out again next Sunday with the u6’s on the floor from 10am followed by the u8’s at 11am and the u10’s at noon. The club was delighted with the performance of its members who played with their colleges recently and wishes the best of luck to those playing this week. The club has elected a full committee to steer the underage section through this very important year. Under Chairman Tim McMahon the Committee and the very strong and experienced group of mentors the club is well set up to honours the heroes of 1917 that formed the famous Black and Amber club. Austin Stack – A Snippet: Looking back at 1917 and Austin Stack was arrested and sent to Mountjoy. He led a strike demanding prisoner of war status along with Lispole’s Thomas Ashe who died on the protest aged 32. Austin Stack was released in November 1917 after two more hunger-strikes and was elected to the executive of the Irish Volunteers. In April 1918 he was active in the campaign against conscription of Irish into the British army. In May he was arrested again and incarcerated in Crumlin Road jail. While in jail Austin was returned unopposed as a Member of Parliament for Kerry West in the December 1918 general election. We will bring you more of the history of Austin Stack and the club during the year. Scor: The Tralee Senior Scor competitions must be finished by Sunday, February 5th. The Scor na bPaisti section competitions will take place in early March. ST PAT’S STORIES: There was no winner of the Lotto from the numbers drawn 3,13,25 and 27. The next jackpot this Sunday night is e3,400 with the draw taking place in Skelper Quane’s Bar. The club is asking its supporters to keep an eye out in the coming weeks for new and exciting developments regarding the Lotto. James O’Riordan won the trophy for the Player of the Week at the u6’s while Aoife Kennedy was the winner from the u8’s. In both age groups there were a number of others who put in big performances. The u8’s are encouraged to practice catching the ball and they will be in the Presentation Gym this Sunday from 10am. Aidan Hayes was named Player of the Week at u10’s and these will be back in the Presentation from 11am on Sunday. Seniors County League: The Seniors now know that they will be playing Currow away in the opening game in the Division 2 Round 1 on Sunday, March 19th. The club wishes Tim Moynihan, his selectors and panel all the best for the coming season. KERINS O’RAHILLY’S NEWS: Firstly the Tralee Advertiser congratulates Pat Flavin on his election as PRO for O’Rahillys and we look forward to working with him. 10k Run: This will take place on Sunday January 25th and will be run in memory of the clubs late Chairman Pat Healy. The run will leave the club house at 11am and as well as the individual race, including over 40’s 50’s and 60’s, there will also incorporate a team event with 3 to count from teams of 4. Registration can be done on-line at Primoevents or on January 28th from 2pm to 8pm at the clubhouse. The cost is e20 and numbers are limited. Senior Team: The club wishes Morgan Nix and

Michael Quirke and their squad all the best for the season. Their season will begin on February 5th in the Coiste Tra Li Town League with an away trip to Na Gaeil followed by a home game with Stacks a week later. In the County League the club are away to Dingle on March 19th. Kerins O’Rahillys were delighted to see Jack Savage make his Kerry senior Inter County debut last Sunday against Cork. It is hoped that this will be the first of many games for the Kingdom. Minors: The club wishes Declan Quill and his management team and squad all the best for the season which will commence on January 28th in the Town League with the County League beginning on February 18th. Bord na nOg: All mentors have now been appointed for the coming year. The big change for this is that the under 6’s and u10’s will now be training on a Sunday morning instead of Saturday’s. Sunday February 12th is the official launch day from 2 to 5pm with registration on the 25th of February from 10am to 1pm. Lotto: The present Jackpot is e5800 with the draws on Monday nights and tickets can be purchased from club members or on-line at www.korgaa.com PARNELL’S NEWS: 2017 Training: Under 8’s and u10’s training starts in the Tralee Sports Complex on Tuesday February 7th from 6 to 7pm. Under 14 and u16 Training: Plans are being put in place for these age groups at the moment. Looking back at the AGM and the Treasurer was happy with the returns from the major fundraiser the Race Night and the smaller events such as the successful bag packing which were ran to keep on top of the expenditure. The Easter and Summer camps were also very successful. The club is now working to its Development Plan objectives and the Finance Committee will be working hard to see the Capital Fund grow as well as covering the weekly expenses of the club. KERRY CAMOGIE CLUB: The Kerry Camogie County Board are holding a Table Quiz on Friday January 27th at the An Tochar Ban Pub in Kilmoyley commencing at 9pm sharp. Table of 4 cost e20 and all support is appreciated on the night. THE OVAL BALL: TRALEE’S MUCH NEEDED WIN: Tralee Rugby club will be delighted with their start to the second half of the season as they got their much needed first win on the season in the Munster J2 Division. They were away to Ennis and their 22-10 win takes some of the relegation pressures off the squad. They will be looking to continue their progression with a home win over Charleville this Sunday at 2.30pm. ON THE GREENS: TRALEE GC: In the Sunday singles Terry Egan was the winner from Maurice Laide and Sean Carmody. The Ladies Section New Year Hamper Round 3 was won by Mary Savage with Emma Savage in second place. Members are asked to note that the Captain’s Drive-In is on Saturday, January 29th.
