TECHNOLOGY CORNER with Billy O Meara (HRI Services)

Billy simplifies and explains Todays Technology My Internet is not working! What can I do?

Billy says: If you’re with Eir or Vodafone, make sure the DSL light is steady. If its flashing ,the turn off the modem for five minutes. Try to log into the modem by opening your web browser and on top where you see the web address put in "192.168.1.254" for eir or "192.168.1.1" for Vodafone. What this will tell you is that you are communicating with the modem. Also, make sure the internet light on your modem is green not red and if you have checked those steps and you still have no internet call your broadband provider.

I have a Sky Q Box. Can I put Free to Air on the same dish?

Billy says: No.... When Sky install the Sky Q box they will be changing the LNB on your dish for it to work with your new sky Q Box. In the UK you can ask for a Sky Q Hybrid 6 way LNB which will enable you to keep your Free to Air but they are not available from Sky Ireland at the moment. But I have seen them available on eBay.

You can ask Billy for Tech Advice, simply email him on info@hriservices.ie

LEGAL CORNER

LEGAL MATTERS CORNER MIRIAM MC GILLICUDDY ANSWERS YOUR LEGAL QUERIES

LITTERING AND THE LAW Littering is a topic that always pops up and one that most people feel passionately about, but unfortunately there is always the small few with no regard for our beautiful County. Here we will divulge what legally constitutes litter to hopefully clear up any grey areas that may arise. The LITTER POLLUTION ACT, 1997 sets out the following: ‘No person shall deposit any substance or object so as to create litter in a public place or in any place that is visible to any extent from a public place’. Under the legislation litter is any substance or object deposited in a public place or visible from a public place which is likely to become unsightly, deleterious , nauseous or unsanitary regardless of how big or small it is . This is a very broad rule and indeed it needs to be, when we go out and about on our daily lives we really shouldn’t leave any mark on the landscape or in our town. This ranges from fly tipping household waste on beauty spots and beaches to throwing a fast food burger wrapper out of the car window on the way home, or even an orange peel or something else biodegradable, to cigarette butts outside a pub or out a car window or chewing gum on the streets. It is also an offence to dispose of municipal waste (household waste) into or near a public litter receptacle. In fact you can even be fined or prosecuted by the local authority if you are the owner or occupier of property that is littered and is visible from a public place. There is an on the spot fine of €150 for littering which can go all the way up to €3000 if convicted in the District Court. We all have a legal duty to keep our County litter free from the Local Authority (KCC) to pubs, shops, sports clubs and factories to the mobile fast food outlets that we welcome during the summer months so if you know of any illegal littering the best thing to do is contact Kerry County Council or phone the 24-hour National Environmental Complaints Line on locall 1850 365 121. Legal Quip: What we are doing to the forests of the world is but a mirror reflection of what we are doing to ourselves and to one another. – Mahatma Gandhi If you have a legal query or need further information on any item addressed in this column please send in your query to mirs@gofree.indigo.ie Miriam McGillycuddy, Solicitor, Derryana, Ballyard, Tralee, County Kerry. WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... THE BROGUE ANNOUNCED AS FINALIST FOR GREAT CARVERY OF THE YEAR Tralee’s landmark venue , Kirbys Brogue Inn , in Rock street has been shortlisted as one of the 3 finalists in The Great Carvery of the Year competition. This event has reached one of its most exciting and anticipated points with the reveal of this year’s shortlist of Ireland’s top carvery venues. One hotel and one pub from Kerry are in the running to be named as Munster’s winners as well as the overall titles of Great Carvery Pub of the Year and Great Carvery Hotel of the Year.

PURPLE FLAG JUDGES “VERY IMPRESSED” BY TRALEE THE judges who were in Tralee last weekend were very impressed with the town and what it has to offer which augers well for the prospect of being awarded Purple Flag status later this year. The aim of the Purple Flag is to increase footfall into town centres, lower crime and improve the night time experience. The Purple Flag Committee in Tralee presented a strong case for the town throughout the assessment process by showing a commitment to ensuring that Tralee has a safe, vibrant and well-managed Night Time Economy. The Chief Executive of Tralee Chamber Alliance, Kieran Ruttledge, said: “We are very happy with how Tralee was presented during the judges’

visit who were particularly impressed by the facilities that the town has to offer families. They said that we had a great range of drinking and dining options. Whilst we are hopeful that our submission is good enough to achieve Purple Flag statues, we now have a couple of anxious months to wait until we hear the final result. It was great to see the business community, Kerry County Council and An Garda Siochána work together to show that Tralee is a great place to live, work and visit.” Throughout last weekend’s assessment, the judges toured the area within a circuit from The Rose Hotel to Tralee Bay Wetlands to North Circular Road and back to Fels Point, covering pubs, hotels and restaurants, Aqua Dome, Siamsa Tíre Theatre, KDYS

and Tralee Town Park. Kieran Ruttledge paid tribute to David Scott the Purple Flag coordinator and his team who worked tirelessly over the past

number of months to prepare the application and the Judges’ tour of Tralee.

Welcome to Gregorys Garden - Our story You would think opening a high end restaurant in the heart of Dublin suburbia late last year , a restaurant that has received rave reviews from the royalty of Irish Food critics would be enough of a distraction to stop Kerryman and chef Greg O Mahony from re-opening his hidden gem 'Gregorys Garden " again in Castlegregory . But Greg is having none of it .. "We opened our doors again in Castlegregory on the June weekend " "My experience in Castlegregory over the past 10 seasons is what allowed me to take the plunge in Dublin . Without my great summers in the Milesian Restaurant and more recently Gregorys Garden , both in Castle , I wouldn't have had the confidence to go with Ember . " But I cant forget my roots and so much of what I've learned in Kerry is embedded in Embers fare " But its not just Kerry we're talking about here , Greg has been around the block , so to speak . As renowned Critic Tom Doorley recently put it in his excellent review of Ember ..."Theres Chapter One , L'Ecrivan and Pichet wrapped up in this restaurant and it shows !" and Lucinda O Sullivan says "O’Mahoney fine tuned his culinary skills in some of the best kitchens in Ireland including Chapter One, L’Ecrivain and Pichet...This Ember sure sizzles " "Yes I have brought some of Gregorys Garden fare into Ember and its worked really well ...to me fresh different ingredients are key , and Castlegregory has an abundance of them . Im really excited about introducing some of my Ember menu to my regular customers in Castlegregory . My organic gardens in Castlegregory are full and abundant with fresh produce. I’m really looking forward to seeing some old friends and great customers as well as meeting new faces " Gregorys Garden ..."Definitely one Of Kerrys Best secrets ...but for how long?

HELLO MY BEAUTIFUL FRIENDS, I HOPE YOU’RE ALL HAVING A GREAT WEEK! THIS WEEK I’M GOING TO BE TALKING ALL ABOUT HIGHLIGHTERS AND MY FAVOURITE PRODUCTS TO GET THAT GLOW. Highlighters are having a serious moment in the makeup world. With top makeup artists like Jaclyn Hill and Jeffree Star releasing their own highlighters, you’d be mad not to have at least one in your Makeup Collection. Buuuut, if you’re just discovering the absolute magic and fabulousness that are highlighters and unsure of which to invest your precious euros in then I got you covered!

SLEEK SOLSTICE PALETTE This highly pigmented highlight palette is gorgeous and recommended by Highlight Queen Jaclyn Hill. It retails at around €14. BARGAIN.

BECCA COSMETICS X JACLYN HILL CHAMPAGNE POP The highlighter of all highlighters, Champagne Pop. If you are looking to up your highlight game, look no further. This highlighter has an amazing buttery formula and goes on the skin flawlessly. It is a tad bit more pricey though, at 40 euro on CultBeauty.co.uk. You can get it in Space NK in Dublin too. It is 100% worth the money, I’m obsessed. It gives a lovely bronzed highlight.

THE BALM COSMETICS MARY LOUMANIZE

Another fab highlighter which is perfect for those with pale skin. Definitely one of my favourites, especially for daytime makeup. It’s €21.50 and you can get it on Debenhams.ie, Cloud10Beauty, BeautyBay.com and lots of places online I’m sure.

MAC GLOBAL GLOW MINERALIZED SKIN FINISH

For all my MAC lovers, the global glow skin finish is definitely one of my favourites. I love a bronzy golden highlight which is exactly what this is. You can get it in any MAC store or on Brownthomas. com for €31.50.

JEFFREE STAR COSMETICS SKIN FROST

The Jeffree Star Cosmetics Skin Frosts have gotten rave reviews since being launched. I need to get my hands on King Tut and Peach Goddess. These highlighters are also HUGE in size, almost double the size of a regular sized compact. These retail at 29 dollars each which is around €26. You can also get it on Beautybay. I am delighted to announce that I’ll be based in House of Glamour taking makeup appointments from Saturday the 12th of August onwards. I hope you enjoyed this week’s page and are ready to glow like the goddess that you are! Now stop reading and get yourself a highlighter.

FITNESS!

WEIGHT TRAINING 101

HELLO MY STRONG FRIENDS, THIS WEEK I’M TALKING ALL ABOUT WEIGHT TRAINING AND HOW IT CAN HELP YOU ACHIEVE YOUR GOALS! In general, people will practice cardio(running, cycling etc) and forget about weight training when it comes to burning fat. And there are still many trainers who will say that aerobic exercises burn off fat and weightlifting is only used to build muscle bulk. This statement is not correct because the more muscle mass one acquires through weight-bearing exercises, the more they will burn fat calories — even at rest.

Cardio combined with weight training will result in effective fat loss. Cardio exercises will raise muscle metabolism during the activity and for a short time after the exercise session. Weight training, on the other hand, will raise your muscle metabolism during the exercise session — and for a long time after the exercise session. Some high intensity trainers have even seen their metabolism rise for several days following their training session. Whether your goal is to tone or build muscles, it is important to know what happens during the muscle training process. When lifting weights, muscle tissues are torn apart (at the

microscopic level) from the stress, and it’s in the recovery period that your muscles become stronger and, therefore, able to support the extra stress. Usually the recovery period required is 24 to 48 hours after a weight training session so it’s good to train different muscle groups on different days. My current training split looks a bit like this… DAY 1 – LEGS DAY 2 – UPPER BODY DAY 3 – LEGS DAY 4 – UPPER BODY DAY 5 – LEGS And then I have two rest days a week also. It is so so SO important to fuel your body efficiently when weight training. You need to give yourself the correct food especially carbs and protein, so that your muscles recover and you have energy to fuel your sessions.

If you are in any way confused about nutrition and what you should be eating, get in touch with a good well informed personal trainer. I highly recommend Recalibrated Bodies,

they strive to inform all their clients on why they’re eating what they’re eating and don’t cut out ‘bad’ foods. If you go to a personal trainer who tells you to basically eat plain chicken, broccoli and rice or something to that effect… RUN!!! A good PT won’t cut out food groups or drastically cut carbs, trust me. Anybody who debates the fact that weight-bearing exercises don’t help people lose weight and fat should lift weights for one hour and see their heart rate go through the roof. I definitely sweat a lot more when I do a good weights session.

An important factor to consider when trying to lose weight is that lots of muscle mass can be lost as a result. As muscle mass will keep your metabolism high, try to avoid quick weight loss through miracle diets or starvation. This weight loss will be regained just as quickly.

Instead go for a gradual fat loss routine by combining weight training and cardio, and allow muscle mass to build up and increase your metabolism. Results may take a little longer, but they will last for a longer period of time. If you do a quick fix weightloss ‘diet’ then you won’t get the results you actually want. Just don’t focus on how long it will take to get to your goals, just focus on yourself day by day and the changes will come, I promise.

HEALTHY RECIPES

TRALEE ADVERTISER

HEALTHY RECIPES for 2017 Peaches are in season now, beautiful and juicy and often thought of as a dessert only fruit, but it makes a very tasty salad. We served it this week with “st tola goats cheese “ yum yum!!! So here are two lovely ways to serve it as a light salad,as a starter, lunch or main course with salad

GRILLED PEACH AND APRICOT SALAD INGREDIENTS

• • • •

1 bunch kale, destemmed 4 apricots, halved 4 peaches, halved 1/4 pound prosciutto, thinly sliced.

1.

Preheat the grill. While it warms up, tear or chop the kale leaves into bite-size pieces and place those in a large salad bowl. Add a pinch of salt and a tablespoon of olive oil and massage the kale, kneading it for a minute or so until it softens. Whisk together the remaining olive oil and the lemon juice, adjusting to your taste. Set the dressing aside. Tear or cut the prosciutto into smaller pieces and set those aside too. When the grill is reasonably but not overwhelming hot, brush the apricots and peaches very lightly with a neutral oil and grill, cut side down, until deeply caramelized. When the fruit is grilled, toss the kale with the prepared dressing and then crumble the feta on top. Add the prosciutto and then the still-hot peaches and apricots, letting their juices seep down into the kale. (If there are any extra juices on the plate you put them on after grilling, add those too.) Eat with crusty bread

2. 3.

GRILLED SALAD

• • •

1/4 cup feta cheese 1/4 cup olive oil 1 to 2 tablespoons lemon juice

WITH ROMAINE, PEACHES, GARLIC SCAPES, AND STEAK

For the balsamic reduction: • 1/2 cup balsamic vinegar (use an economical variety and save the good stuff for other uses For the grilled salad: • 2 small heads romaine lettuce • 6 garlic scapes, tips trimmed • 4 to 6 peaches, halved • 1 1/2 pounds skirt steak • sea salt, to taste • freshly ground black pepper, to taste

METHOD 1.

2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8.

9.

To make the balsamic reduction, pour balsamic vinegar in a heavy-bottomed medium-sized saucepan and set over medium-high heat. Stirring all the while, maintain a constant but gentle bubbling, edging the heat down a bit as needed. Cook for about 10 minutes, or until mixture has reduced by half. Reduction should be thick, but it should still easily drip off the back of a spoon. Set it aside while you grill the vegetables. Prepare a hot grill. Prep the romaine. Leave the core intact, but slice the reddish tip off the very end of the bunch. Next, working from end to top, halve the romaine. Immerse in water, and shake to dislodge any sand, paying close attention to the very base. Shake out and pat dry. Set aside. Grill the garlic scapes over the hottest part of the grill, cooking each side for 1 to 2 minutes. Slice into 4-inch sections and set aside. Grill the peaches on each side for 2 to 3 minutes. Use a sharp paring knife to slice out the pits and then cut each half in half (to make quarters). Grill the romaine for 1 to 2 minutes on each side. Cut out the core and chop the leaves into bite-size pieces. Arrange grilled vegetables on plates. Next up, season both sides of the skirt steak with a generous pinch of sea salt. (Adding salt just before cooking leaches less moisture from the meat and makes for an excellent sear.) Cook for 3 to 4 minutes a side, let rest for 5 minutes, and then slice into 1/4-inch slices. Recipes by Lay several slices of steak on each plate and finish with a drizzle of balsamic reduction and several twists ground black pepper

THE MIRACLE PRAYER Dear Heart of Jesus in the past I have asked for many favours, this time I ask you this special one (mention favour). Take it dear Heart of Jesus and place it within your Heart where your Father sees it, then in his merciful eyes it will become your favour not mine. Amen. Say this prayer three times for three days and your favour will be granted. Never known to fail. Must promise publication of prayer.

KNOW YOUR RIGHTS: HELP WITH PAYING THE RENT Question We are on the local authority’s housing list, but for now we need to find private rented accommodation and get help with the rent. Should we apply for Rent Supplement or the new Housing Assistance Payment? Answer People on the local authority’s housing list should no longer apply for Rent Supplement. You can apply for the Housing Assistance Payment (HAP) instead. HAP is a form of social housing support for people with a long-term housing need. Since 1 March 2017, it has been available nationwide. The HAP scheme aims to allow all social housing supports to be accessed through one body – the local authority – and to enable people to take up full-time employment and keep their housing support. Under HAP, you find your own private rented accommodation. The rental agreement will be between yourself and the landlord. This means that you will have certain rights and obligations, as will your landlord. The rent must be within the HAP rent limits, which are based on your household size and the rental market in your area. Flexibility is provided for people who cannot find suitable accommodation within these rent limits. The Homeless HAP Pilot in Dublin offers further flexibility for homeless people. You won’t pay the rent to the landlord yourself. You will pay a rent contribution to the local authority through the HAP Shared Services Centre, which manages HAP payments on behalf of all local authorities and will pay the rent directly to your landlord. The rent contribution you pay will be based on your income and your ability to pay – like with a local authority differential rent.

THE MIRACLE PRAYER

If you are getting a social welfare payment at a post office, you must pay your rent contribution through the Household Budget Scheme.

Take it dear Heart of Jesus and place it within your Heart where your Father sees it, then in his merciful eyes it will become your favour not mine. Amen. Say this prayer three times for three days and your favour will be granted. Never known to fail. Must promise publication of prayer.

If you take up a job or increase your working hours, you will still be eligible for HAP, provided that you meet the other conditions of the scheme.

IT’S ONLY A JOKE PARDON

A FIFTEEN YEAR OLD AMISH BOY AND HIS FATHER WERE IN A SHOPPING MALL......

Two men get into an elevator in a doctors office. One man, beaming says to the other, “I just got a brand new hearing aid. It works great; if you were to drop a pin, I could hear it; if a mouse were to sneeze cross the street, I would hear it.” The second man They were amazed by almost everything they saw, replies “thats impressive, what kind is it?” but especially by two shiny, silver walls that could move apart and then slide back together again. The first man looks down at his watch and says “11 o’clock.”

The boy asked, ‘What is this, Father?’ The father (never having seen an elevator) responded, ‘Son, I have never seen anything like this in my life, I don’t know what it is.’ While the boy and his father were watching with amazement, a fat old lady in a wheel chair moved up to the moving walls and pressed a button. The walls opened, and the lady rolled between them into a small room. The walls closed and the boy and his father watched the small numbers above the walls light up sequentially. They continued to watch until it reached the last number. and then the numbers began to light in the reverse order.

PIZZATIME !

While working at a pizza parlour I observed a man ordering a small pizza to go. The cook asked him if he would like it cut into 4 pieces or 6. The man then said ‘Just cut it into 4 pieces; I don’t think I’m hungry enough to eat 6

GRANDAD WE LOVE YOU !!

A little girl says .....”Grandad ,,,,Would you make a frog noise for me?” The grandad, confused asks, “why?” The little girl replies, “dad says when you croak we are all going to disneyland”.

A YOUNG GARDA

A young Garda notices an old man driving through the town at 2 in the morning .... and it had been a pretty slow night and so he decided to pull in over to see if he needed any assistance.

Finally the walls opened up again and a gorgeous 24-year-old blond stepped out. The father, not taking his eyes off the young woman, said quietly to his son..... ‘Go get your Mother.’

A SMALL JOKE

A dwarf goes to a very good but very busy doctor and asks “I know you are busy but do you treat dwarves?” The doctor replies “Yes, but you will have to be a little patient”.

“Where are you going sir?,” asked the young officer. “I am on my way to attend a lecture concerning the negative effects of alcohol on interpersonal relationships,” said the man. “Who would hold such a lecture at this time of night?” asked the officer. “That would be my wife,” said the man.

TORQUING CARS! CAR ADVICE WITH HONEST JOHN – YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED If your car has developed a fault, turn to Honest John by emailing honestadvice@telegraph.co.uk

AUTOMATIC LOVER

I need to replace my reliable 2001 Ford Focus and am looking for a small automatic with a good seat height and low sill. I do not need a new model as my annual mileage is only 5,000. What would you suggest? BB Try to find a Suzuki Splash 1.2 automatic or the equivalent Vauxhall Agila. Failing that, a Hyundai i10 or Kia Picanto 1.25. If you want something slightly bigger, look at the Hyundai ix20 or Kia Venga.

NEGATIVE TERMINAL

We have a Hyundai i40 diesel estate. It is very comfortable and full of gizmos, but diesel is getting such a bad press that we are looking to change. We do about 12,000 miles a year and would like a petrol automatic. TB The Peugeot 308 1.2 PureTech 130, Peugeot 2008 1.2 PureTech 110, Peugeot 3008 1.2 PureTech 130 and Citroën C4 Picasso 1.2 PureTech 130 are all available with the EAT6 automatic gearbox.

LONG-DISTANCE RUNNER

I am thinking of buying a Mercedes C350e hybrid saloon with my retirement income, hoping it will last a long time. Do hybrids last well without incurring expensive costs? PC A C350e petrol plug-in hybrid makes a lot of sense. Toyota Prius hybrids have been clocking up half a million miles with very little trouble, so petrol hybrids are the way to go.

WET FLAW

I read in a recent column about MS’s problem with condensation in his old Mazda MX-5. I bought a Cabrioshield for my partner’s Mini Cooper convertible and it’s the best £100 or so I’ve spent. It stops water ingress, birdlime damage, sun damage, frost and snow. Highly recommended: www.cabrioshield.com. MP That sounds like a good idea, for which many thanks. MX-5 enthusiasts tell me that wet carpets are usually the result of the drain holes in the sills becoming blocked with water, dirt running off the hood and then filling up the sills and finding its way into the car.

UP, UP AND AWAY

I will be changing my Nissan Qashqai in summer. Which petrol turbo SUV has the highest ride height for €20,000€25,000? MB I’d say the Suzuki Vitara S 1.4T BoosterJet. It’s a long way down from the seat to the ground.

TALKING SPORT WITH THE TRALEE ADVERTISER – Ruth O’Reilly, Ciara Griffin and Ciara O’Connor.

with “The Voice” Pat Harnett

FAI NATIONAl P.R.O. OF THE YEAR PATRICK PUNCHES TO THE TOP: While the eyes of many boxing fans were on Katie Taylor or the fight that didn’t happen in Belfast Tralee boxing fans had one interest in one place and that was the National Stadium in Dublin. And it proved to be a memorable night for all involved in the Tralee Boxing Club as Patrick McCarthy defeated St John’s Derry fighter Eoghan Quinn. The Northern fighter was the fancied one as he was a 3 times Irish champion and a European bronze medallist. McCarthy however is the reigning Irish champion and had other ideas and following a perfectly composed game plan took the win on a 5-0 score-line. It was his speed and footwork right from the opening bell that frustrated Quinn and who in the end had no answer to McCarthy’s skills. Patrick is now called up to train with the Irish High Performance Team, and hopefully he will make the team who will be heading to Albena Bulgaria on the 17th - 26th Sept this year. Unfortunately his cousin Jonathan just missed out on an incredible family double. He was well in the contest against Joe Harkin but the Letterkenny boxer caught him with a big right hand just on the bell of the second round and try as he might he never really recovered. Both boys put in a huge effort for nearly a year to get to this level and were thankful on the night to their coaches, sparring partners and all involved in the Tralee boxing club.

Cooper but hopefully he will have a good Galway festival and maybe even the freedom of not being retained will see him rider some better horses for other trainers.

BRYAN’S A BIT SADDLE SORE! July is a dangerous month to be employed by Michael O’Leary in his racing operation! Over the last two years he moved his horses around from various stables and this July he has announced that he no longer retaining a number on jockey but will be booking the best available for his various mounts. This of course was the job of Tralee’s Bryan Cooper but the 25 year old has had a miserable run of injuries since getting the job. He replaced Davy Russell in 2014 and enjoyed one of his biggest ever days in 2016 when he won the Gold Cup on Don Cossack. However Eddie O’Leary who is the racing manager for his brother said that the stable would still be using Cooper where possible. This has come at a bad time for

CATHAL WINS THE DONAL CROWLEY MEMORIAL: There was more success on the bike for Kerry riders at the Donal Crowley Memorial in Blarney. In the main A1-A2-A3 race Tralee Manor West iBike’s Cathal Moynihan took the win ahead of Killarney’s Eoin O’Connell after a sprint to the line with both riders having opened a gap on the others. Tralee’s Sean Lacey (Aqua Blue Academy) was 5th and Killarney CC’s Richard Maes in 7th while Tom Daly, also of Killarney CC was the first unplaced rider in the M60 category. Richard rides cleverly to take Time Trial win: Sliabh Luachra’s Richard Cleverly made light of the blustery conditions to clock the fastest time in Round 5 of the Kerry Time Trial League. He covered the 20km in

TRI FENIT ON THE BANK HOLIDAY WEEKEND: Hundreds of competitors are expected to flock to Fenit on Saturday August 5th for the ‘Tri Kingdom Come’ hosted by the Tralee Triathlon Club. Last year over 400 took part and organisers are hoping to equal that number this year. The triathlon takes in some of the counties most iconic scenery with the sprint version covering a 750km swim, a 20km cycle and a 5k run. There is also a shorter version – 250m swim, 8k cycle and 2.5km run for those looking to Tri the event!! There is also a section for relays and all participants in both Triathlons will receive specially crafted gold medal and a BBQ will be there at the end to help out the crews. SPEEDRITE AT THE TRACK: At the Kingdom Greyhound Stadium this Friday night it’s the second rounds of the Speedrite Dog Foods plus the Boylesports Derby Trial stake. Racing begins early on Saturday morning with the first off at 9.12am while the evening meeting gets underway at 7.45. Tuesday’s card at the track will see the first race go to traps just before 7pm.

27.05.6, the fastest time of the year, to take maximum points on the night and move back to the top of the League table with one round to go. He was pushed all the way on the night by Tralee Manor West iBike’s George Doyle who was just 2 seconds behind in 27.07. Tom Gentleman took 3rd in 27.41 ahead of Sean Dineen (27.50) who had led the League table coming into the race while Killorglin’s Mike O’Shea rounded out the top 5. Eoin Moloney was again the fastest u16, who also race over the 20km, clocked an impressive 30.23 while the fastest in the underage were Shane Galvin in the u12’s and Patrick Galvin topping the u14 charts. Night of Records: There were a number of 20km course records set on the night. In the Ladies section Angie O’Sullivan lowered the record from 31.55 to 31.38.4. In the Masters Over 50 Peter White also smashed the previous record. It was 28.37 but now stands at 28.21.7 while in the M60 Tom Daly became the first rider in that category to go under 30.47 clocking 30.46.9. League Table: Going into the final round of the Time Trial League (now on Tuesday August 8th) Richard Cleverly leads the Men’s League with Suzanne O’Sullivan topping the Ladies table and Eoin Moloney in pole postion to take the u16 title. The Galvin brothers, Shane and Patrick, are looking for a big family double as they lead the u12’s and 14’s going into the last round. RUGBY WORLD CUP CALL UP FOR LOUISE: Women’s rugby will be centre stage over the next few weeks as the country hosts their World Cup. The games takes place in Dublin and Belfast and will hopefully be a guide to the powers that be that Ireland can host the men’s version. The multi-talented Louise Galvin has been called into the Irish squad this week by head-coach Tom Tierney to replace the captain Niamh Briggs who will miss the whole tournament after suffering an Achilles injury in training, a cruel blow for such a great player. Ireland open their World Cup campaign next Wednesday against Australia next Wednesday and Louise has linked up with her fellow Kerry player on the squad

KERRY PLAYERS ON WOLFHOUNDS AND BANSHEE’S: The Australian Football League International Cup is a trice yearly competition contested in Melbourne by the best Australian Football National Teams outside of Australia. Ireland has a good record in the Men’s and Women’s sections and are second seeds in both, having lost both Grand Finals in the last competition in 2014. This is the 6th edition of the International Cup and Kerry has 4 players involved in the Men’s game – Brendan Browne who is with the UTS Bats in Sydney, Michael Finn of Heidelberg Melbourne who also doubles as one of the coaches of the squad, Padraig Lucey who plays for Newtown, Geelong and UCC Bombers Shane O’Sullivan. There is just one Kerry lady on the Banshees side and that’s Laura Flannery who plays Australian Rules, a growing sport here, with the Dublin Angels. The Men’s team, winners in 2002 and 2011 play reigning champions Papua New Guinea, France, Great Britain who are the current European Champions and New Zealand. The women’s team takes on Papua New Guniea, USA and a continental European team as they look to book a place in the knock out stages. Both sides begin their campaigns on August 6th and are currently in Australia in their pre- tournament camps. GERARD SWIMS TO THE TOP OF THE LISTS: In the latest round of the Tralee Bay Swimmers World Series Gerard Pierce took the top spot in Group A followed by James Slade and Cillian Tierney. Group B went to Adam O’Leary ahead of Rory Kirby with Dominic Rollo-Walker taking the third spot while the top 3 in Group 3 were Jacki Ruttledge, Sharon Cahill and Catriona Chester. Swimmer of the Year: With his win in Round 5 of 8 rounds Gerard Pierse is now top of the provisional World Series/ Swimmer of the Year list. It is very tight with any one of 20 swimmers still in with a chance of taking the prestigious title. Pierse is on 14 points ahead of David Smith, Tom Brosnan and Dominic Rollo-Walker who are all on 13 with the next 9 swimmers separated by only 3 points. Bonus points have still to be added to the totals but it looks like this will again go right down to the finish line of the last round. Swimmers take to the open water: Well done to the 17 intrepid swimmers who took to the water for the Derrymore to Fenit 4.5km Cross Bay swim. While the conditions were not ideal all the swimmers had their preparations done and made light of the choppy waters to achieve their goal of crossing the bay. PITCH AND PUTT TEAMS SELECTED: After the hotly contested trials

POINT AFTER FIGHT BACK FOR THE U17’S: The Kerry u17’s enjoyed the lows and highs of the game on Sunday against UCD. They went 2-0 down inside 7 minutes and lost Sean Carmody to injury on his return. Thankfully is does not seem to be too serious. Kevin Williams pulled one back in the 27th minute and Kerry got the point they deserved when Michael O’Gara levelled with minutes to play. The 17’s have added to their squad with the signing of Leo Gaxha from Tralee Dynamos. PARK LIFE: St Brendan’s Park Academy has restarted for the season and takes place on Saturday mornings. THIRD TIME LUCKY FOR MITCHELS AVENUE: Mitchels Avenue are in the midst of a season to remember but will it be for the right reason. Despite good displays they have come up just short in their League final, but at least they have secured promotion, and in the Greyhound Bar Cup final which to their credit was a great achievement in reaching. They have two more chances of silverware and the first of these is this Saturday night, August 5th, when they face Castlemaine United in the Tommy Healy Memorial Cup final. SPA ROAD RETURN: Spa Road FC are back in the KDL after a break. The club has started training at the Tralee Sports Complex and are recruiting players for the coming season. AVENUE TAKES THE GARDA’S TITLE: The KDL’s All Weather pitch at Mounthawk was the perfect venue for the hotly contested Garda / KDYS Blitz. Organised by Tralee Community Policing and the KDYS teams from Tralee and Castleisland took to the pitch to battle it out for honours. In the end the Avenue teams defeated Tshikota side 3-2 in the final. The organiser thanked John Regan, Denis Guerin and Kevin Cunningham for making the facilities available to such a worthy soccer tournament. KERRY GET THE JOB DONE: There has been lots of analysis of Kerry’s win over the last few days so no need for me to add to it. Suffice to say it was a case of the good and the not so good for the Kingdom as they got the job done and overcame Galway to reach the All Ireland semi-final. Their opponents are not yet known as Mayo and Roscommon have to meet again but the question was asked as to whether Eamonn Fitzmaurice will be losing sleep over who they will be playing. And the answer was interesting – he will not be losing sleep but will probably be tossing and turning especially if it is Mayo. They have come through two extra time games and now possibly a replay so is their name on Sam this year? HURLING CHAMPIONS ADVANCE: Reigning Garvey’s Senior Hurling champions Kilmoyley were pushed all the way by St Brendan’s but in the end had 5 points to spare – 0-19 to 0-15 – as they move into the semi-finals of the Championship where they join Lixnaw. 4 teams are now vying for the final two semi-final sports with St Brendan’s meeting Abbeydorney and Ballyduff versus Causeway. PARNELLS NEWS: Parnells u14 boys just saw off a stern challenge from Kilmoyley holding on for a 2 point win in the end. 5 of the players travelled with the Kerry u14 team who took on

Dublin and Clare Well done to all the girls who were on the Kerry u15 All Ireland Division 2 winning team. See a report on the game below. The Parnells Cul Camp takes place at Caherslee Road pitch from August 14th to 18th. The club thanks all those who helped out and donated to their recent bag packing fundraiser in Dunnes Stores at the Horan Centre. CAMOGIE ALL IRELAND TITLE FOR KERRY: Kerry’s u15 camogie team are the All Ireland Division 2 Shield champions after their win in Dublin at the weekend. Kerry defeated Donegal fairly easily and then overcame a more stern challenge from Wicklow. In the final the girls got the better of Tyrone 6-03 to 2-03 in a physical encounter after which captain Kate Lynch lifted the trophy presented by John Mullins of the Camogie Association. Well done to all the girls involved especially those from Tralee Parnells – Yasmine Sultan, Katie Dwyer, Lia O’Connell, Saoirse Maloney and Caoimhe Donnelly. Captains Knowledge: Kerry Camogie County Board’s fundraiser held in conjunction with the British Open golf was won by Jack Dempsey from Tralee who is the captain of the Ballyheigue Golf Club. He picked up his prize from Tom Meehan, Chairman, John Leen, Treasurer and Joanne Diggin from the Camogie County Board. LOCAL DERBY A CRACKER IN INTERMEDIATE CHAMPIONSHIP FINAL: Those in attendance at Kerins O’Rahillys GAA Club on Saturday 29th July were treated to a feast of ladies’ football when the Austin Stack Club girls took on Na Gaeil in the Kerry Ladies Football/ Randles Bros Ltd Intermediate Championship Final. Referee was Seán Joy and a fancied Na Gaeil side led by one point at half time, 1-8 to 1-7, with The Rock goal coming from a penalty taken by Megan O’Brien (her tally for the day coming to 1-6.) Determined Austin Stack Club girls fought tooth and nail for everything in the second half and were deserving victors by a solitary point at the final whistle, 1-14 to 1-13. Marina Barry-Walsh and Laura Rogers led by example up front and the Black’n’Amber Brigade’s defence dug deep in the second half, fighting off many attacks from Na Gaeil. Deborah Mangan had a great game between the posts, blocking several of Na Gaeil’s scoring chances. The Rock Club has now won the Intermediate Championship Cup for the first time. Marina BarryWalsh now has championship medals at Senior, Intermediate and Junior level! What a record! And what a great role model for the ladies game. The Randles Bros. Ltd. Perpetual Cup was presented to winning captain, Norma O’Connor, by Pádraig McCarthy of Randles Bros Ltd, Dan Kearney PRO and Friday 4th August 2017

Christena Curtin Vice-Chair of KLGF. STACKS STORIES: The Austin Stacks Football Camp will take place in Connolly Park starting on August 8th and booking is still open. Over 100 are expected to travel for what looks like being a great weekend. The u12’s have Central League fixtures coming up while the u13’s are looking forward to the Rose of Tralee Competition. The u14B’s went down to Castleisland Desmonds in their Central League semi-final. The u16’s were beaten by Legion A in Round 4 of the County League Division 1 while the B’s were unlucky to lose to John Mitchels B in Division 7. ST PAT’S NEWS: The Lotto was held on Monday night this week due to many of the club members being at the Kerry game in Croke Park. There was no winner from the numbers drawn 2,8,19 and 29 and the next jackpot will be e3,300. The u10’s enjoyed their Go Games in Ballyheigue taking on the host club plus Ardfert and Churchill. The Academy is still on its summer break. The u12 girls are training this week while the Mixed team are looking forward to their Division 4 County League campaign. Their first match is set for August 14th v Laune Rangers C. The u16’s game away agaisnt Ballyduff was the proverbial game of two halves. The boys led by 10 points at the break playing with the strong wind. The second half was the opposite and the home side just took the win 4-12 to 5-08. The Clubs Cul Camp is on from August 7th to 11th and bookings are still open. KERINS O’RAHILLY’S NEWS: The seniors have a two week break before they meet St Mary’s in a vital League game. The u14’s came away from Gallarus going down in their Division 2 semi-final to An Ghaeltacht after a high scoring encounter that ended 4-18 to 5-11. Many of the Girls and Ladies teams have a busy few weeks ahead while the u13’s really enjoyed taking part in the Sandra Keane Tournament going out in the semi-finals to Abbeydorney.
