FESTIVAL NEEDS YOUR CRITICISM ,,,THATS WHAT KEEPS IT THE TOP FESTIVAL IN THE COUNTRY!

If I was to get a euro for every-time I heard the comment “ Festival wasn’t much good to my business this week “... then I’d probably be writing this from the Bahamas! Tralee (and a lot of people all over the world ) have just born witness to the biggest Rose of Tralee festival that has been run to date ...it may not have been the best ,,,well not yet anyway ! but Boy are we on the right track . And to not take the “ helicopter view” of this great event is to do it a great disservice. Back in the day, when I was an active retailer in Tralee (and Killarney), I was heavily involved in Tralee Chamber Of Commerce (Now Tralee Chamber Alliance ) and we commissioned a study of the Festival , where it was calculated that it was worth economically the equivalent of a 450 job facility in Tralee, As the late Bill Kirby of the Brogue would say “the Festival is worth 6 months business to the town! “ And that was 20 years ago ! We have just

seen 65 Roses and their supporters visit Tralee, a 7 day festival , The semi finals now relocated to the Dome away from Portlaoise, and an additional 90 mins TV coverage in “The Road to the Dome “, not to mention so much more press coverage , local , nationally and on the international stage . And yet from some quarters , it still receives criticism! ...But thats no harm ...we all need (constructive ) criticism! Take , for example , the issue of the entertainment in the Square and its effects on the public and the handful of business that operated each evening . Now I am sure that Anthony O Gara , Oliver Hurley and colleagues planned the relocation of entertainment in there , along with the fantastic Dome Cover as a positive step in the middle of town . The fact that it didnt all go to plan won’t be lost on them and guess what , changes will be made , tweaks here and there and next year will be better.... after all this is just the first year of doing this in the square , Why ? because thats the way the Festival does things .... after all its on the go for 57 years and each year is planned to be better than the last! Just ask the 1600 people at the Rose Ball last Friday Night ! Or all the fans who saw Hudson Taylor in the Square for only €15 (as opposed to Dublin for €40!) Being originally from Galway and now active in the media world , I am in contact with a lot of people all over the country who are in awe of what the Rose of Tralee is and what people in Tralee have achieved with this . Often its the case that it takes people from outside to really appreciate

WHAT WE’VE GOT. Show me another town or city in the country that gets the attention of the nation and the world, the column inches in the press, the airtime on TV and Radio and the presence on Social Media. And when you pair that with the booked out Hotels and B&B’s , the spend on local tradesmen in readiness, the hundreds of extra staff in the Bars , Dome , Hotels, Restaurants, Bands and Musicians, Taxis ...then we really have a festival worth embracing even more ! Don’t be a ‘hurler on the ditch‘ get involved , volunteer ..they need even more of the calibre of volunteers that steered Tralee through its biggest festival to date .... The Best ? ... No thats still to come! Editor Chris Shortt comments on this years Festival ...

ELYSHA BRENNAN HAS LAUNCHED “UNMASK FOR PIETA” Rose of Tralee, Elysha Brennan has launched “Unmask For Pieta”, an initiative pioneered by Shane Kenny, 2015 Rose Escort of the Year, at The Rose Hotel Tralee. The exhibition features honest and frank contributions from his fellow Rose Escorts and Roses to the conversation about mental health which is topical, relevant and worthy of open discussion in 2016. It’s striking that so many people are all bound by a certain age category because of the Festival – Roses are 18 to 27, Escorts 21 to 30. That demographic is a prime age group to experience all the pressures associated with challenging mental health. Many of them have created individual artistic masks to simply illustrate their own personal understanding of challenging mental health experiences in physical form for others to interpret. None has a professional artistic background - they are ordinary, yet exceptional young people willing to “Unmask” for the benefit of their peers. It’s open to the public and it is all in support of Pieta House.” Photo By Domnick Walsh

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... WINDY CITY CELEBRATES AS CHICAGO ROSE IS CROWNED 2016 ROSE OF TRALEE

MAGGIE McEldowney, representing Chicago, is the 2016 Rose of Tralee. RTÉ’s Dáithí Ó Sé announced the result in front of nearly one million television viewers and an audience of 2000 people in the Festival Dome on Tuesday Night Maggie (27) was presented with her sash and tiara by 2015 Rose of Tralee Elysha Brennan and Robbie Scanlan, Managing Director of Tipperary Crystal, lead sponsors of the Festival. Speaking after becoming the 58th lady to be crowned Rose of Tralee, Maggie said: “The crown’s coming to Chicago. I’m so excited about it! One of my favourite parts about being the Chicago Rose is that every day I get to wear the Chicago sash. I’m just beaming with pride because I know the people back home and the people I’m representing at my Centre are very special. There’s such a strong Irish community in Chicago, I can’t wait to share the news with them.” Maggie McEldowney, a native of the south-side of the city, is the third Chicago Rose of Tralee following Teresa Kenny in 1960 and Larna Canoy in 1987. She works as the Director of Development at Marist High School and is passionate about raising money for families who could not otherwise afford Catholic education. After earning the Chick Evans Scholarship to the University of Illinois, she graduated with a degree in Media Studies in 2011. In her free time, Maggie serves on the Board of the Young Irish Fellowship Club of Chicago, a committee responsible for coordinating fundraisers that celebrate Irish culture. “I understand the tremendous impact a Rose can have on the lives of others, and will continue that tradition wholeheartedly as the 2016 Rose of Tralee,” said Maggie who’s grandmother, Brigid O’Neill, was born and raised in Maghera, Co. Derry. The McEldowneys hail from Draperstown, Co. Derry and Fr Seamus O’Neill, her dad’s cousin, is a devout member of the St. Patrick’s Society for the Foreign Missions, located in Co. Wicklow. Singing sensation, Nathan Carter serenaded Maggie McEldowney in the Dome and again on Denny Street in the heart of Tralee where thousands of people turned out for the Midnight Madness Parade sponsored by Bon Secours Hospital Tralee. The 2016 Rose of Tralee International Festival was the biggest in its long history with 65 Roses taking part in the seven-day event. Next year’s Rose of Tralee International Festival will take place from 16-22 August and online Rose applications are now being accepted at www.roseoftralee.ie. Pictures: Domnick Walsh Photography

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... CRAFT MAKERS CENTRE IN TRALEE ANNOUNCE THEIR SEPTEMBER PROGRAMME

Craft Makers at 37 Ashe Street is fast becoming a cultural hub for artists and craft professionals ...following a busy summer season, Deirdre Enright who manages the centre spoke to us this week about the month ahead. Big news is the request by customers and artists that the Gallery turn over monthly exhibitions of new work...’we launch our gallery programme with Kerry based artist, Girts Balodis who won the Screaming Pope prize at K Fest in 2014. Girts creates surfaces using a great mix of materials and within his work is the human shape, almost ghost like or ethereal...it’s a fabulous skill and a real trick of the eye when you identify the human shape in each artwork’. Deirdre is having a public opening on Thursday 1st September at 7.00pm and everyone is welcome. On Saturday 3rd September Girts is hosting a Gallery talk at 3.00pm and will bring attendees through his art making process and inspiration. This event is free of charge and will be popular among art enthusiasts and art students. Deirdre is encouraging visual artists to make contact and to visit the centre. ‘We are keen to platform practising artists and craft makers and that remains the priority’, Deirdre said. The centre’s weekly workshops continue with an all day Basket Weaving workshop on Friday 9th September. Hanna Van Aelst will be bringing people through functional and decorative baskets and everyone will get to complete a basket to bring home. The following week Thursday 22nd September, artist Roisín McGuigan whose studio is based at Craft Makers, kicks off a four week painting course designed to introduce newcomers to painting and composition. An important event for Craft Makers also is their Culture Night programme on Friday September 16th. ‘We look forward to staying open for the first time until 11pm for Culture Night this year...we are throwing the doors open for a free night of craft workshops, demonstrations and walking tours’, Deirdre said. Sculptor John Murphy will lead a large scale group wood carving session at 5pm while Felicia Thomas will work with guests using paper craft while upstairs we will have Edel Wilson screen printing, and Damien Slattery providing portrait demonstrations. Popular jewellery designer Alison Walsh will also demonstrate her design and making process. The centre will also put out three walking tours for CULTURE NIGHT, one at 5.00pm, 7.00pm and a night tour at 9.00pm. Hot toddy’s, teas & Coffees will be available throughout the evening and visitors can enjoy street artists and musicians throughout the evening. Also in September a two day Watercolour Workshop with Roisín McGuigan takes place from Thurs 1st through to Fri. 2nd Sept. Life Drawing Workshop with Roisin McGuigan commences on the 4th of September for three weeks. The month wraps up with the Tralee Food Festival and Craft Makers is taking part in the Taste Trail on September 24th as well as hosting a coffee morning in aid of The Soup Kitchen on Ashe Street. It’s a thriving cultural space at Craft Makers this autumn and it’s a great time to join their mailing list or drop in for a monthly programme. Tel: 066 7120632. THE SEARCHING CYCLIST’ CHECKS OUT BALLYGARRY HOUSE FOR POPULAR AUSTRALIAN TRAVEL SHOW Australian TV and radio presenter Nick Vindin is filming along the Wild Atlantic Way this week – for two upcoming episodes of a popular cycling travel show called The Searching Cyclist. He is here as a guest of Tourism Ireland and Fáilte Ireland. The show – which airs on SBS (public television network) in Australia – follows Nick as he explores the scenery, culture and history of holiday destinations around the world by bicycle. This week, Nick is cycling various sections of the Wild Atlantic Way, from Donegal to Kerry. The two resulting 30-minute episodes will air to some 90,000 Australians – or potential holidaymakers for the island of Ireland – this November. In Kerry, presenter Nick was filmed cycling over the Conor Pass, at Gallarus Oratory and on the Slea Head Drive, as well as at the Dingle Whiskey Distillery. Footage was also captured at this year’s Rose of Tralee Festival. Nick stayed at Ballygarry House in Tralee and at Benner’s Hotel in Dingle. Sofia Hansson, Tourism Ireland’s Manager Australia and New Zealand, said: “We were delighted to invite Nick Vindin to film along the Wild Atlantic Way for his popular ‘The Searching Cyclist’ show. It provides an excellent opportunity to showcase cycling holidays and the spectacular scenery of the Wild Atlantic Way to a large audience back in Australia – inspiring viewers to come and explore the landscapes and locations featured for themselves.” 12

Answer If your original builder is unwilling to compensate you, you may be able to pursue a claim against the builder through the Small Claims procedure. The aim of this procedure is to provide an inexpensive, fast and easy way for consumers to resolve disputes without needing to employ a solicitor. The maximum amount you can claim is €2,000. The Small Claims service is provided through local District Court offices. Anyone who has purchased goods or services for private use from someone selling them in the course of business may submit a claim using the Small Claims procedure. You can make claims for faulty goods or bad workmanship, minor damage to property and for the non-return of rent deposits for certain kinds of rented properties. Businesses involved in disputes with other businesses can also use the Small Claims procedure. To make a claim, you complete an application form, which you can get from the Small Claims Registrar at your local District Court office. You can also get help in completing the form from the Registrar. Make sure you use the correct name and address of the person or company against whom you want to make the claim. The completed form with a fee of €25 should be lodged with the Small Claims Registrar. You can also apply online at the Courts Service Online website, csol.ie. The Registrar sends a copy of your application to the person against whom you are making the claim. If the other party does not reply within 15 days of receiving your application, your claim will be automatically treated as undisputed and you can apply for a court order in your favour. But, if your claim is disputed, the Registrar will contact you and let you have a copy of the reasons why the other party is disputing your claim. The Registrar will try to negotiate a settlement to the dispute. If no settlement can be reached, the matter is then set down for a court hearing in the District Court.

THE LATE JOHN “JETT” MYERS

Last week Tralee lost her own “John Wayne,” John “Jett” Myers of Old Ballymullen Tralee. As the Duke slipped away quietly and was laid to rest at Rath Cemetary on Saturday last. The stories told in the last few days about “The Duke” are nothing short of legendary, and 99% of them are no doubt true, some perhaps with a bit added to put a gloss on them. His quick wit and sharp brain are extolled in the following story shared by Jett’s long time friend Matt Leen; My story begins with a horse named “Ballymountain Girl” a participant at Ballybeggan Park during the festival of Kerry one year. The late Joe Grace had gotten a hot tip and so the Duke and I made our way to the racecourse to have a flutter. Approaching the gate, “The Duke” produced his New York Times press pass and in we went through the gates, free of charge of course. We had our bet and Ballymountain Girl duly obliged and romped home at good odds, in fact she re appeared two days later in another race and won again. Anyway, we made our way down town, and the Duke said: “The steaks are on me” as we entered Benners Hotel. As the evening progressed, two large T-bone steaks were served up with the trimmings, and expectedly polished off. Then came the bill... Surveying the docket Jett noticed the words V.A.T. at the end of the bill, at which he called the waiter to the table. The waiter was asked to explain what was all this V.A.T. about? The Duke said “I never ordered it, I never got it, and I didn’t eat it, so I certainly aint’ going to pay for it.” After a few words with the manageress, he paid the bill (minus the V.A.T.) and we resumed our celebrations at the Sleive Mish bar with the owners of Ballymountain Girl. May you rest in peace Jett, and thank you for the memories. Matt Leen 16

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... BUSINESS DOCTORS MASTER FRANCHISE LICENCE WON BY KERRY BUSINESS MAN.

John Nelligan, 41, from County Kerry, has bought the Business Doctors master franchise for Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. The serial entrepreneur plans to launch three franchises a year, up to a total of 20+ across the North and South. Dublin, Belfast, Kerry, Cork, Limerick and Galway are amongst the prime territories earmarked for the first wave of openings. John, a former industrial engineer, is no stranger to the world of franchising. In 2011, he bought a territory from high street garment alterations franchise The Zip Yard. Just one year later he also snapped up Galway, becoming the company’s first franchisee with multiple businesses. In Pictured: John Nelligan, Matthew Levington & Rod Davis 2015, he added Douglas in Cork to his portfolio. One of the company’s Business Doctors Founders top performers, with top notch people skills, John chairs the company’s franchisee advisory committee. He said: “My experience within The Zip Yard has given me a great working knowledge of how franchising works, both from the franchisor and franchisee points of view. “I love the franchising model and when I read about Business Doctors, their holistic approach to small business support really struck a chord. “This is a business I really believe in and one that Ireland’s 200,000 SMEs are crying out for.” Rod Davies, Business Doctors’ co-founder said: “When we met John, we knew we had found a safe pair of hands to take our brand forward throughout Ireland. “He is a very competent and approachable businessman, with tremendous drive. “John wanted to get Business Doctors up and running within weeks of our first meeting and he is well on track to achieve this. We wish him every success and are right behind him”. From the get-go, Business Doctors has been a company with an international outlook. Since humble beginnings above a Cheshire takeaway in 2004, franchisors Rod Davies and Matt Levington were set on building a global brand: the go to company for SME consultancy services. With 40 Business Doctors territories now operating around the UK, the ambitious pair took their first steps beyond British soil when they launched in South Africa in May 2014. Today, Business Doctors’ territories are up and running in eight regions of the country, including Johannesburg, its largest and wealthiest city. Business Doctors also launched in India in January 2016. www.businessdoctors.ie Contact : John Nelligan 087 9729103 Business Doctors will be amongst exhibitors (Stand 500) at the first Irish Franchise Show at the RDS in Dublin on 9 &10 September 2016.

Time for Soup!

With Autumn coming , how about a few nice light soups ? This week I’ll look at coconut as the base for the soups. It makes for a lovely light soup but full of flavour. Last weekend I had the pleasure of being at the Taste Kerry Food Expo at the Dome, with both a stand for the restaurant and also a cooking demo. A big thank you to all those who came along .... it was a great day... I will have a blog piece on it, www.traleeculinarygangsters.wordpress.com for those who missed it.

Add 1/2 tsp. salt and purée until smooth. Let cool to room temperature. Transfer to a large bowl and chill, covered, at least 2 hours. Meanwhile, preheat oven to 160. Spread coconut flakes on a small rimmed baking sheet and toast, tossing occasionally, until golden, about 5 minutes; transfer to a plate. WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... COUNTY KERRY WILL HOST STAGES ONE AND TWO OF THE UNIPHAR CROSS ATLANTIC CYCLE The Uniphar CROSS Atlantic Cycle, led by former Ireland International and Lions rugby player Paul Wallace, takes place from Sunday 4th – Thursday 8th September 2016, and starts with a special stage around the Dingle Peninsula. The event will see hundreds of supporters, international rugby legends such as Tomas Castaignède (former France player) and Mike Tindall (former England player), and a team from Uniphar, led by Group CEO Ger Rabbette, saddle up and cycle along the Wild Atlantic Way from Dingle to Westport in aid of the cancer charity, Friends of CROSS, which supports the cancer research programme at Trinity College Dublin. Corporate teams signed up already include Friends First, KBC, PRL Group, LinkedIn, Society of the Irish Motor Industry (SIMI), Volkswagen (VW), Mitsubishi, Lionbridge and Merrion Fleet, to name but a few. The first stage this year, around the Dingle Peninsula, and just 60kms, has a very special and poignant significance. Called ‘Janey’s Jaunt’ in memory and honour of Jane O’Hare, who sadly died from cancer last December, the tour will depart Dingle

at 2pm on Sunday 4th September from the Dingle Skellig Hotel. The cyclists will take in Ventry, Slea Head, Ballyferriter, Mullreagh and the north of the peninsula before heading back to Dingle. As Jane was an expert on the natural world, with a passion in particular for seabirds, this stunning Stage One route will fittingly take in a conservation area rich in seabirds. Her husband Brendan, and sons Benjamin and Michael will participate in the cycle this year. On Monday 5th September, the cyclists will depart Dingle between 8.30am and 9.30am and cycle the 165kms of Stage Two to Lahinch through Conor Pass, down into Drom and then along the coast road via Camp, Blennerville and on to Tralee where they’ll have a well deserved water stop at Allcare Pharmacy in the town. After Tralee they’ll cycle through North Kerry to Ballyduff, Ballylongerford and Tarbert where they’ll take the short ferry crossing to Killimer and stop for lunch in Crotty’s Bar in Kilrush. The Rugby Legends will viist Kilrush Community School before continuing on the coast road through Quilty and Spanish Point, ending the stage at 5pm at Lahinch Golf and Leisure Hotel. The funds raised from the CROSS Atlantic Cycle will be invested in the purchase of state of the art laboratory equipment to support research projects targeting scientific advances in the prevention and treatment of cancer. The research will predominantly take place at the Trinity Translational Medicine Institute (TTMI) located on the St James’s Hospital site. John Reynolds, Professor of Surgery in Trinity and St James’s Hospital, and a principal cancer

investigator in Trinity, provides the link from Friends of Cross to the clinical and basic scientists based at the TTMI. Entry fee for the CROSS Atlantic Cycle is €340 per stage, or €1,600 for the full tour, which includes accommodation, meals, return transfers, an amazing cycling kit, a Uniphar goodie bag, a discount voucher from Cycle Super Star and fantastic fun! Cyclists can join the CROSS Atlantic Cycle for any of the one-day stages or cycle the full tour. See www.crossatlanticcycle.com for more information about the event, or to register for the whole tour or a stage. Anyone wishing to make a donation, or sponsor an individual cyclist, can do so at the Charitable Friends of CROSS page at mycharity.ie or at JustGiving.com. What are you waiting for? Get on your bike for the CROSS Atlantic Cycle and help beat cancer! For more information please contact sorcha@crossrugbylegends.com and follow the event on Twitter @_RugbyLegends or find on Facebook/Rugby Legends Cycle.

This week sees a €317,000 donation from Rory McIlroy to Jack & Jill which is literally a ‘gift of time’ to fund 19,813 hours of home nursing care for 281 sick children nationwide under Jack & Jill’s wing, including 8 children in Kerry who will receive 564 hours between them through this wonderful donation

This €317,000 ‘gift of time’ from Rory McIlroy’s Rory Foundation to the 281 families, including 8 families in Kerry, currently under the wing of Jack & Jill will fund a total of 19,813 hours of home nursing care nationwide at €16 per hour. Specifically, this breaks down into 564 hours of home nursing care and respite for the 8 families currently under the wing of Jack & Jill locally. According to Jonathan Irwin, CEO of Jack & Jill, “This gift of time from Rory McIlroy can be broken down county by county and will make a huge difference to families locally and nationally. Typically Jack & Jill funds up to 64 hours of home nursing care per month at a cost of up to €1,024 per family, so this money will make a big difference. To put it into context, that’s over 70 hours for each family under our wing today and the Rory Foundation donation will support the child and family with home nursing care and respite, county by county. What this golf and charity champion has gifted to families is time to do the ‘normal’ things that others take for granted - I should know as I’ve walked this pathway - like a full night’s sleep or a day out with the healthy siblings, safe in the knowledge that their sick child is being well cared for at home by one of our nurses. Furthermore, in choosing Jack & Jill, Rory has extended a hand of friendship to our families which gives them a real boost knowing that a golf and charity champion like this is on their side. The money and awareness he has raised for Jack & Jill is breathtaking and I want to thank everyone behind the Rory Foundation, especially Barry Funston.” In total, a whopping €951,000 donation from Rory McIlroy was Picture shows (back row) Sinead Moran split three ways for (Senior Liaison Nurse, Jack & Jill) , children’s charities Jonathan Irwin (CEO Jack & Jill), Barry Barretstown, LauraLynn Funston (CEO Rory Foundation); Children’s Hospice Front Row - Jack O’Leary and Tom and the Jack & Jill O’Leary (sons of former Dubs and GAA Children’s Foundation. legend John O’Leary) and their mum Catherine Swords O’Leary.

Bexblah Beauty This page is sponsored by Munster Robes & Kitchens Hello my beautiful friends, I hope you’re all having a fantastic week and that you have recovered after The Rose Of Tralee.

This week, I wanted to talk about something a little different. I wanted to talk about choosing a Makeup Artist for your wedding/ a big event. There are lots of different Makeup Artists out there and choosing the right one for you and your style is very important, especially if it’s an important event or a wedding. Pictures last forever and you don’t want to end up spending time and money only to end up disappointed.

DO RESEARCH

First and foremost, look up a few Makeup Artists in your area. Look at their work, look at their qualifications and look and their experience. If you know someone who got their makeup done by that Makeup Artist, message them, ask how they got on. Everyone has different tastes in makeup so make sure that if you like dramatic makeup the artist can do that or if you’re more on the natural side make sure they can do that.

QUALITY OVER QUANTITY

The Makeup Artist you’re choosing is a professional. He/She has a craft and should charge according to their experience and training. If you’re looking for the cheapest person for the job, they mightn’t necessarily be the best, and the same goes for the most expensive. If it’s your wedding, I recommend not to skimp on your Makeup Artist, it’s one day, pay a bit extra for better quality. On another note, just because a Makeup Artist uses expensive high end brands, it doesn’t necessarily mean that they’re good. I have both high end and drugstore brands in my kit, I just use what works best, not what looks good in the kit.

HAVE A TRIAL

If it’s a wedding day or even a debs or graduation, if you’re anyway unsure, have a trial! That way you can see how the Makeup Artist works and how the makeup stays on.

KNOW WHAT YOU WANT

TELL THE MAKEUP ARTIST WHAT YOU WANT. There is absolutely no point telling her “do what you think is best”. There are SO many different looks and styles of makeup, how on earth is he/she supposed to know how you like to look? If you want a purple smokey eye. If you don’t like heavy coverage or strong contouring. If you only wear liquid eyeliner. Just tell him/her! Your Makeup Artist is not a mind reader, if she has no guide on what you want she won’t be able to do her job to the best of their ability.

LISTEN TO HIS/HER OPINION/SUGGESTIONS

They’re the professional after all, well I hope. If you go in with a picture of Kim Kardashian but are pale with blonde hair and blue eyes, you will not look like Kim Kardashian. If you want a really detailed cut crease eyeshadow look but have hooded eyes, your Makeup Artist should recommend a different style because detailed cut creases don’t show up on hooded eyes, but, if that’s what you want, they should do it. What I’m saying is, your Makeup Artist will be a master at their craft, they should have spent time studying face and eye shapes, they should know what works for your skin type and colouring, hair colour, eye colour and face shape. They should take into account your face and what would enhance your already beautiful features and should recommend what they think will work best. If you trust their opinion listen to them. If they turn you into a clone of every other client they have ever done, you know not to return.

If you want to contact me for an event, collaboration or just to say hi you can email me at Bexblahbeauty@gmail.com or through any social media, FACEBOOK: Bexblah Beauty, TWITTER: @Bexblah, INSTAGRAM: @Bexblah.

Stay Gorge,

Bexblah.

BEXBLAH

FITNESS!

HELLO MY STRONG FRIENDS! I HOPE YOU’RE ALL HAVING A GREAT WEEK AND YOU’RE ALL RECOVERED AFTER THE ROSE OF TRALEE. I CAME DOWN FOR MIDNIGHT MADNESS AND QUITE LITERALLY MADE UP FOR MISSING THE REST OF IT. Anyway, back to Fitness! This week it’s 3 weeks until my holiday to Ayia Napa! As I already talked about how to stay on track while on holidays I thought I would talk about how to get back on track after a holiday/wedding/festival/any other event.

ACCOUNTABILITY – Start making yourself aware of all your fitness and dietary habits by tracking them. Get back into tracking with MyFitness Pal which is sobering as well as addictive! Also research has proven again and again that people who track their eating are the biggest losers, literally. ASSES THE DAMAGE - That’s right…get. on. the. scale. It may be painful to see that you have gained a few pounds, but you need to know what you are dealing with. On the other hand, you might find that you didn’t do as much damage as you think. You probably will not see a dramatic weight gain after only one week. Either way, you need to be realistic about what your body needs to do now. So just weigh yourself and get it over with. I weigh myself everyday, no matter what I did the day before and it seems to be working a treat! LET IT GO - If you had a lazy holiday or a great celebration or a reunion with friends, you should not feel bad about it. You should feel really good about what you have done for yourself by putting your needs first for a change. Any guilt or regret you are feeling should be pushed out the window now. You are actually lucky because you are most likely coming back with a fresh attitude and a renewed sense of your goals. So literally let it go…I’m serious…bend down and scoop your arms up really big, walk over to a window, and throw all that guilt away. What’s done is done. ORGANIZE YOUR MORNING – Prepare everything the night before. Lay out your workout gear and pack your gym bag. Plan your meals and if possible, have them prepped and waiting for you. SET GOALS – Pick a big event in your near future, a reunion or a birthday and set a goal. Or pick a road race and start training for it. STAY PSYCHED – If you find yourself losing interest in staying on track, reward yourself with a massage or a new pair of running shoes. New lycra has magical powers that wear off after 3 washes. AIM FOR DAILY EXERCISE – Of course there will be days where you miss it but if you aim for it every day and put it on your calendar you will at least end up with a solid 4 or 5 days of movement.

IT’S ONLY A JOKE TWO NATIVE AMERICANS RUN INTO A TOWN

They go to the pharmacy and ask for help. They don’t speak much English though and say: “big chief, no shit. big chief, no shit.” The pharmacist gets it and gives them some mild laxatives and tells them to return if it doesn’t work. The next day they return. “big chief, no shit, big chief no shit!” Alright, the pharmacist says, and he gives them another laxative in a larger box , labelled WARNING ;EXTRA STRONG . Return if it doesn’t work! They next day they return again, crying. What happened? asks the pharmacist. Did it work? The Natives reply: “big shit, no chief, big shit no chief!”

I’ve seen how low her tops are cut.” “was it the jones girl? She always seems to be looking at boys.” “ I really can’t tell you father.” “ alright, say 100 hail marys and 200 our fathers and come by every week next week for community service.” The young man meets a friend outside, who asked” well, what’d you get?” The young man smiles....” 3 GOOD LEADS!”

Just get the biggest knife from the kitchen and hack them to pieces.” Hearing this, the maid leaves the phone on hold, goes to the kitchen and grabs the biggest knife she can find, then enters the bedroom and kills both of them. She returns to the phones and asks, “I killed them both. Now what?” Man: “Just hide their body in the basement. I’ll deal with it when i return.” Maid: “But we live in an apartment building. WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... KERRY ETB LAUNCH FETCHCOURSES.IE Over 4,000 Further Education and Training courses can now be found in one place - fetchcourses.ie. The new website, developed by SOLAS, the Further Education Authority, and Education and Training Boards Ireland will allow learners to access information about Further Education opportunities throughout the country such as Post-leaving Cert courses, the latest traineeships, back to education initiatives and many more. These programmes are delivered by a network of Further Education and Training Providers across 26 counties, and online through SOLAS eCollege. Further Education and Training offers a wide range of interesting accredited courses that help individuals to develop their skills for employment, career progression, progression into other FET courses or third-level as well as providing fundamental literacy and numeracy skills.

CEO Kerry ETB, Colm McEvoy said: “Through the ETB network, Further Education and Training in the form of PLCs, traineeships, adult or community education or Specific Skills Training courses, is embedded in our community and right across Ireland. To date, the huge opportunities offered through FET have remained one of Ireland’s best kept secrets. FETCHcourses.ie is a very significant step to communicating the rich diversity of options that the Kerry ETB offer to learners aged 18 and above” Minister for Education & Skills, Richard Bruton TD said: “As our economy comes out of a very difficult period, many new opportunities have opened up for young people, in the further education and training sector, including traineeships and apprenticeships. I believe that we must build a bridge between education and enterprise which is stronger than what we have ever seen before in Ireland. I am delighted that over 4,000 Further Education and Training courses can now be found in one place - fetchcourses.ie.”

CAO OFFERS RISE AT THE IT TRALEE

The Institute of Technology Tralee will register over 1,500 new learners this September, an increase of 6% on this time last year. New students will enter the Institute from the CAO, Springboard, FETAC linked/ advanced progression routes and international markets. This year saw a modest recovery in applications for the Bachelor of Engineering in Civil and Environmental Engineering at the ITT, reflecting the turnaround in activity in this sector nationally. Applications for the suite of computing related programmes on offer at the Institute have also increased, whilst applications for business related programmes have increased significantly in line with national trends. Dr Brendan O’Donnell, Vice-President, Academic Affairs and Registrar stated that the ITT has seen a significant increase in applications in the areas of Agricultural Engineering and Agricultural Science. “Nationally there has been a 26% decrease in applications for agriculture or horticulture-based programmes, however applications to IT Tralee for degrees in agricultural engineering and agricultural science have increased by 22%. In light of the significant increase in our applications we have increased our intakes on these programmes, and the CAO points for the Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) in Agricultural Engineering has increased by 10 points to 335.” IT Tralee has also seen a 12% increase in applications for the Bachelor of Science (Honours) Degree in General Nursing and the Bachelor of Science (Honours) Degree in Mental Health Nursing, and the points for these programmes have increased by 10 points to 425 and 405 respectively. Over 500 international students will enrol on programmes offered by the Institute in the academic year 2016/2017. September will see the ITT enrol its first cohort of students from Korea and Hong Kong who will join students from Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Germany, France, Canada, Malaysia and China. Dr. Oliver Murphy welcomed the increase in CAO applications and stated that all honours degrees at the ITT now incorporate a work-placement component, a factor which he believes increases the attractiveness of the ITT as a third level destination. “Work experience combined with the curriculum delivered by our committed and dedicated academic team ensures that the graduates of the IT Tralee are work-ready, with 86% of our graduates securing work or pursuing further education opportunities such as Masters of PhDs within 6 months of graduating”. Dr Oliver Murphy also emphasised the importance of the proposed creation of the Munster Technological University (MTU) which will see the merger of IT Tralee and CIT to create a new and innovative university in Munster. The MTU has been delayed due to the absence of legislation. “Two key areas that need to be addressed at a national level for the third level sector are the funding for third level and the reform of the third level sector, part of which will see the creation of technological universities. The third level sector is significantly underfunded and the current funding model is not sustainable into the future” concluded the President of the ITT. 38

FAI NATIONAl P.R.O. OF THE YEAR TCHAU RIO – KONNICHIAW TOKYO: As the Olympics in Rio are now in the annals of history what are the abiding memories from an Irish point of view and can we say they were a success? From a Brazilian point of view it is very questionable what the legacy will be. The football stadiums will go back to their original use and most of the other venues are temporary ones that will be dismantled while the only real sporting donation to the people of Rio and the surrounding areas is the golf course. And while this is being given over as a municipal course how many ordinary Brazilians play or will take up golf? Then let’s be honest have there been many cities and populations that have seen a very positive legacy from the Olympics. A lot of cities, including in the US, are still paying off huge deficits. Maybe the Olympic Stadium in London is one of the good outcomes as it is now home of West Ham United and I am sure will be used for International football. But staying with Brazil and thankfully from an Irish point of view all the athletes, support staff, media and supporters returned home safely. Unfortunately German canoe slalom coach Stefan Henze was killed in a car crash. The silver medallist at the Athens games was killed during the first week of competition but even greater than his sporting legacy is the fact that his donated organs have saved the lives of four others. However there is no doubt that the overriding memory of the 2016 Olympics from our point of view will be ticket scandal, the positive drugs test for O’Reilly and the controversy surrounding out boxers. There is nothing more to say on O’Reilly’s positive drugs test except that he let the country and image of the country down. It does prove that our drug testing procedures work which cannot be said about those in other countries. On that Michael Conlon bout he was certainly the one that suffered the greatest wrong. He won the fight hands down – if you can say that about a boxer! But was he the victim of circumstance? Ireland had brought the spotlight for the wrong reasons on the boxing and he was fighting a Russian so did the judges lean against him as a response to this? We will never know. Katie Taylor’s fight was much closer and you can argue one way or the other so I think her defeat was just one of those things that will happen with ‘human judging’. There is no doubt Katie is not the fighter she was a couple of years ago and again maybe the judges went with her opponent when they saw the fight she was putting up against the Olympic champion from 2012. The rest of the boxers were poor and it seems there needs to be a big review of their High Performance unit. When you see the success Billy Walsh had with the US team one can only wonder.

But there were lots of positives from an Irish point of view starting with the O’Donovans and Analise Murphy picking up medal. Thomas Barr’s run will long be remembered and we also had some very good finishes including those inside the top 10 such as both competitions in the Modern Pentathlon with Arthur Lannigan O’Keeffe 8th and Natalie Coyle 7th in an Irish record. We had the sailors McGovern and Seaton in 10th, Robert Heffernan walking to 6th and Dingley taking 8th in the diving. There were other decent performances as well so plenty to build on going forward towards Tokyo. Ireland were 62nd of the 78 countries that won medals with 54 countries winning at least one gold medal. Look across at our neighbours and it was a fantastic Olympics for Britian ending up with 67 medals and second behind the US on the medals table having taken 27gold, 23 silver and 17 bronze. The one thing every British athlete spoke about was the funding was in place – from their Lottery. What a shame we can’t say the same thing. Let’s home the Irish Olympic Council – or the members that survive plus any new additions will attempt to get this right for Toyko. Planning for that has already began for many athletes and while facilities have certainly improved with the National Sports Campus (if you are in Dublin and haven’t been out in Abbotstown – adjacent to the National Swimming Complex – it’s worth a visit). So well done to all our athletes who did us proud in Rio, of course many would have wanted things to go better but they all did their best. It will be interesting to see how many move up places over the coming months if athletes begin to feel the wrath of the doping agencies and get disqualified. Finally on the ticket scandal that fact the no sporting organisation or indeed any other member of IOC has spoken out in favour of Pat Hickey says volumes. Whether they find enough to charge him remains to be seen but whatever happens I am sure the investigation going on here will finish his time in the public spotlight and the end of his Olympic career as the majority of those inside and outside of sport believe it should. Suffice to say that the mother of Lasar sailor Finn Lynch had to secure tickets to the opening ceremony from a Swedish source after Pro Ten telling her all tickets were sold out. But they were not they were with Mr Mallon in Rio ready to be scalped to wealthy locals. Sadly greed has overcome one or more of those in the IOC. Let’s hope this investigation is over by December and from January 1st the attention of those at the top of our sports turn their attentions to doing everything to get our best team possible to Toyko. Quick Highlights – Usian Bolt, Mo Farrah, the entire British cycling team and the Brazil soccer team.

BEST OF LUCK TO THE MINORS AND SENIORS: Kerry minors and seniors grace the Croke Park sod this weekend and we are all behind them. The minors face Kildare for the right to play Galway in the All Ireland final and are in with a great chance. Kildare however will have aspirations of their own and like all big minor game it is all about which players step up on the day. For the senior sure they are only travelling to make up the numbers. Everyone says Dublin are unbeatable. That is everyone except 36 players, managers and coaches from Kerry who have other ideas. We owe this Dublin side a defeat – let’s hope it is this Sunday. And a county behind them!! STEVE TO BE REMEMBERED AT THE TRACK: This Friday at the Kingdom Greyhound Stadium it’s the first round heats of the Gain Feeds A1 Current 525 yards. Entries are being taken for the Stephen Kennedy Memorial A5 confined 525 yards which begins on Saturday, September 10th. Steven was hugely respected in the doggie community and indeed far beyond. SEAN AND SEAN IN THE GREEN OF IRELAND: Well done to Sean McGrath from The Park and Tralee Dynamos Sean Kennedy who are the latest in the extending line of Irish underage internationals. They were part of the Hibernia Cup in Dublin taking on the likes of the Northern Ireland squad and Glasgow Celtic. Killorglin’s Jack O’Connor was a guest player with Ipswich. Both Sean’s and the recently capped Dillon Robinson are amongst a wider group that are cross channel at the moment aiming to get onto the first step to the top of the game. KERRY DISTRICT LEAGUE RESUMES: The 2016 /2017 Denny Kerry District League begins this season. There will be 5 Divisions this season so things should be competitive all through. In the Premier it will be interesting to see how The Park and Tralee Dynamos get on. Both clubs probably need to strengthen their squads to challenge for the title but as always they won’t be far away. Mitchels Avenue B have the honour of being the first Tralee club in action as they kick off this Friday night against Ballyheigue Athletic B in Division 2 at Mounthawk Park. HARRIERS HAUL OF MEDALS: The GloHealth National Masters Track and Field championships took place on Sunday in Tullamore and Tralee Harriers brought home a haul of medals. Leading the way was Patsy O’Connor who has just moved into the O60 Category and ended with 3 National Titles and even more impressively he set new National Records in each of his three wins. Patsy has been involved in athletics in Kerry all his life and is very involved in the coaching of the next generation at Tralee Harriers won the Shot Putt in 13.21 beating Dublin’s Phil Conway who represented Ireland at the Munich Olympic, the Discus in 46.25 and the Javelin in 42.39. He alsmost made it four from four losing out in the weight for distance competition by just 3 cm, taking silver. His club mate Martin Flaherty also took gold in the High Jump O50’s clearing 1.45m. Other medals came to Kerry with the An Riocht relay teams taking gold in the 4x100 and 4 x 400, Ger Cremin winning double gold in the O35’s 100m and 110m hurdles. Anthony Greaney won gold in the O40 100M and John Glynn took silver in the O40’s 200m. Kevin Lynch ran PB’s in the O40’s 200m and 400m’s with Colm Lynch winning gold in the O35’s 200m and the 400m’s. CYCLING SUCCESS AT HOME AND AWAY: Kerry cycling enjoyed another good weekend

SPONSORED BY RON CONSTRUCTION, BUILDING & CARPENTRY SERVICES with some of our young stars on the podium at the National Championships in Banteer. Form a Tralee point of view Tom Moriarty had an exceptional weekend winning the Road Race and the Time Trial and was also on the winning Kerry team while he finished second in the Criterion. Sean Barrett and Kieran Coggins finished 3rd in their respective Time Trials while Coggins was also 3rd in the Crit. Tom O’Connor, Thomas Gould and Ronan Leahy all took team gold medals. Lacey the County Champion: The local cycling season came to an end with the County Championships and it was Sean Leacy, who rides for Aqua Blue, who took the title – his second Michael Blackwell Memorial Cup. The race took place in bad conditions in Cordal and Leacy controlled things from the off, and covered all the breaks. The decisive one saw him get away alongside Killarney CC’s Conor Kissane and Tralee Manor West iBike’s Cormac Daly. Lacey jumped clear of the two on the penultimate lap and stayed away to win. Daly was the best placed of the Tralee riders in the A2 category taking 2nd with teammate Ronan O’Shea in third.Tralee Manor West iBike had a clean sweep in the A3’s with Ross Culloty winning from Sean McCarron and Tom Gentleman. The Chain Gang were celebrating with the first two riders home in the A4’s. Michael O’Shea took the win as well as being the first in the Masters Over 40. Chris Murray was second in the A4’s as well as being the first Over 50 home. Shane Fleming was third in the A4 category. The Breen Family Shield for the Best Team in the County Championships went to Tralee Manor West iBike. Where are all the Tralee Ladies? One thing that has surprised me since I stared covering cycling is the lack of Tralee ladies in either the Road Race League or the Time Trial League – maybe something that can be looked at for next season?? Moynhian 5th in Wexford: Cathal Moynihan, from Tralee Manor West iBike had a good two days at the Wexford 2 Day ending in 4th overall in a race won by Killarney CC’s Eoin O’Connell. PADRAIG PITCHES AND PUTT’S TO TITLE: The Kerry Match-Play Pitch and Putt finals took place on Newmarket in tough condition. Tralee’s Padraig Hobbert defeated Alan Dugdale in the semi and Kevin O’Connor in the Junior final, taking his first County title. This was his first County title, having taken 5th in the All-Ireland Stroke Play finals. Tralee had three of the semi-finalists in the Intermediate semi-finals with Alan Hobbert defeating club mate Jason Cregan to book his place in the final. Eamon Sheehy defeated Castleisland’s Timmy Looney to join Hobbert in the decider. The final was cut back form 36 to 18 holes due to the weather and after a tight battle Sheehy came through to win his first County title at this level. In the Seniors Jamie Blake made an early exit while Tony Blake was unlucky to lose his semifinal on the 4th play-off hole to the eventual winner Deerpark’s St John Kelliher. QUALITY FIELD FOR SWIM: There is a quality entry signing up for the Jeanie Johnston Swim with 3 English Channel

swimmers signed up so far amongst some very other experienced swimmers. The swim starts under the shadow of the Blennerville Windmill on Saturday, September 3rd. The finish will be in Fenit, a distance of 8km. With the weather playing havoc with the schedule the Gerald Walsh Memorial Swim and BBQ took place in mid-week. This is an important swim in the context of the Swimmer of the Year and we will have the results next week. The Tralee Bay Swimming Club are still looking for a date for The Lighthouse Swim. PARNELL’S NEWS: The u10’s enjoyed their time at the Jack Moriarty Memorial Blitz in Clare. Jack was a Tralee man who helped the host club Clonlara GAA become the successful one they are today. Teams for Clare and Galway were also involved and the players were delighted to get their medals from Clare senior hurlers. Next up for these is the North Kerry Blitz. Under 12 Camogie: The u12’s played 2 great games in the County League in Killarney against Causeway and then they defeated the home side 2-1 to 1-1. The u14’s played in the North Kerry B final at Austin Stack Park and will probably look back on some of their missed scores with regret. In the end they went down to Crotta 4-04 to 2-08. The u15’s took on Lixnaw with the team featuring a number of u13 and u14 players and after a competitive outing running out 4-08 to 2-08 which was a huge result for this bunch of players. Well done to the clubs players who played with the u15 Kerry Hurling Development squad in their defeat of Glen Rovers in the Cork Premier League. Well done to the 50 plus participants who took part in the Cul Camp. Hopefully everyone enjoyed it . Thanks also to all of the coaches and players who were involved in passing on the skills. Keep an eye out for details of the Camogie Association ‘Hurl With Me’ programme coming shortly. Details for the Big Blitz will be released soon. This will kick off the All Ireland Hurling Final weekend with the Blitz on Saturday, September 3rd at the John Mitchels GAA Grounds. CONGRATS TO THE STACKS ON THE ROSE CUP WIN: 16 u13 teams from around the county and beyond set out to try and win the Rose Cup and in the end the Black and Amber of Tralee were successful. Credit goes to all the teams who played such good football in terrible conditions. The event was sponsored by Oaklands Daybreak and James O’Donoghue from the shop along with 2016 Rose Elysha Brennan presented the trophy to Stack captain Ben Quilter after they saw off Ballymac, St Paul’s from Mungret, Ardfert, Laune Rangers and Killarney Legion in the final. HALL OF FAME FOR JOHNNO: Legendary Kerry amnd Austin Stacks footballer John O’Keeffe was this week inducted into the GAA Hall of Fame, a long overdue honour for the holder of 6 All Ireland medals. ST PAT’S NEWS: There was no winner of the Lotto from the

numbers drawn 8,15,21 and 23 and the next draw takes place in Skelper Quane’s Bar this Sunday night. The Academy is back after their 4 week break but there will not be training this Sunday due to the big games in Dublin. Well done to the u16’s who advanced to the final of the County League after defeating Keel/ Listry 3-11 to 2-11. The Senior B’s defeated Ballydonoghue by the narrowest of margins to qualify for the McElligott Cup Final. It finished St Pats 4-05 to 2-10. NA GAEIL ANNUAL CYCLE: Na Gaeil Annual Fundraising Cycle takes place on Saturday August 27th. Starting time is 9.30am from the clubhouse in Killeen. There is an 80km route via Castleisland, Abbeyfeale and Listowel and a 40km route via Castleisland. Registration fee is €20 for adults and €10 for under 18’s. All are welcome to take part in what should be a great day’s fun and exercise. KERINS O’RAHILLYS: It’s all quiet on the field at the moment with the senior and minor action taking a break until after Sunday and hopefully for longer. Saturday morning is back for the u6’ to u10’s at 11am in Healy Park, Ballyrickard. The u8’s and u10’s also train on Thursdays from 6pm. Well done to all those who took part in the Summer Camp and to all the coaches who gave the kids such great coaching. The young players were delighted to see Kerry star Barry John Keane switching roles and becoming the Referee. TRALEE SUCCESS ON FINAL WEEKEND OF COMMUNITY GAMES: There was more success for Kerry athletes at the final weekend of the Community Games National Finals. In Athletics and the u8 60m Blennnerville / Ballyard’s David Walsh won bronze while in the u14 100m Conor Commane, Boherbee / Cloghers/ Manor was also 3rd. Blennerville/ Ballyards Cathal Fitzgibbon won Pewter in the u16 1500m. Ardfert/ Kilmoyley’s Darragh Courtney won Gold in the u16 Boys High Jump. Cathy Dwyer was 3rd in the Gymnastic u13’s while Ciarna Collins from Rock Street / Caherslee took silver in the u15 Boys section. In Judo Marko Antonio was the winner of the u15 section in Judo for Rock Street/ Caherslee and we say well done to all the competitors from Tralee who were in action either of the weekends. ON THE GREENS: Tralee Golf Club: The Tralee Golf Club, winner in 2012, are through to the semi-finals of the Dr Billy O’Sullivan Shield after beating off the Ring of Kerry. Tralee won 4-1 and are awaiting to see who their semi-final opponents are. In the Bons Secours Open Am Am the winners were Pat Prendeville, Des O’Donnell, Brian Hayes and Tom Henchy with 83 points. Second, on 83 points, were Brian O’Leary, Laura Rafferty, Mary O’Donnell and Richard Rafferty while the team of Conor Kilroy, Mike Stack, John Reen and Ger Teahon were third.

PRAYER TO HOLY SPIRIT Holy Spirit, you who makes me see everything and shows me the way to reach my ideal, you who gives me the divine gift to forgive and forget all the wrong that is done to me and you who are in all instances of my life with me. I, in this short dialogue, want to thank you for everything, and affirm once more that I never want to be separated from you no matter how great the material desires may be. I want to be with you and my loved ones in your perpetual glory. To that end and submitting to God’s holy will, I ask from you..(mention your favour). Amen T.G.
